An informal discussion on the application of physical chemistry to steelmaking was held during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1929. Alexander L. Feild presided. In opening the session, Mr. Feild said: We are all familiar with the cooperative mining and metallurgical studies that were begun in 1920 by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Mining and Metallurgical Advisory Boards, and in particular with the work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking which was launched under the technical direction of Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr., in May, 1926. It was this work at Pittsburgh more than anything else that was the immediate cause of the formation within the Institute of a committee on the physical chemistry of steelmaking. During the latter part of 1927 a small group of Institute members interested in. the general subject of the physical chemistry of steelmaking undertook the organization of a subcommittee within the Iron and Steel Committee, to foster an active interest in this comparatively new field among the Institute membership and to obtain papers for publication in the Transactions, covering the various phases of the general subject. This plan was conceived by C. E. Meissner, to whose active efforts at the outset as well as during the past year is largely due whatever measure of success the plan has thus far attained. The subcommittee, now a committee of the Iron and Steel Division, was recognized and formally made a part of the Institute's organization at the February, 1928, meeting. As originally organized and as const,it,uted during the past year the committee has been made up as follows: C. H. Herty, Jr., C. D. King, A. B. Kinzel, John Johnston, C. E. Meissner, L. F. Reinartz, R. B. Sosman, and A. L. Feild, Chairman. Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr. has just been elected chairman for the coming year and C. E. Meissner has been reelected as secretary. From the outset it has been the settled policy of the committee to make membership an annual rather than a permanent matter and to reconstitute in part the membership of the committee each year by dropping a certain number of members and adding new members. The Leveling off of the engineering stress-strain curve in crystals of (100) 07-ientotion at a stress tl, is associated with extensive cross slib. The temperature and strain -rate dependence of tl are similar to those of indicating that a rate process is the cause 01 this phenomenon. The plastic deformation of silrer crystals of (110) orientation is multiple to that of crystals of single-slip orientation. THE work hardening of fcc crystals has been the subject of intensive investigations in the past 15 years. The effect of orientation, deformation temperature, solutes, second phase or precipitates, strain rate, etc., has been studied in a number of fcc metals.'-5 In spite of the considerable amount of work reported on the dependence of work hardening on the orientation, temperature, and solute concentration, certain aspects of the plastic deformation of fcc crystals have not been clarified. For instance, with the exception of a few investigations,6-8 where crystals of multiple-slip orientations have been studied, almost all the studies have been on crystals of single-slip orientations. Hence, a major portion of this study has been devoted to the dependence of plastic deformation on the multiplicity of slip systems and the enhanced possibility of dislocation interactions resulting from such multiplicity. Further, the abnormally low rate of work hardening observed at large strains at certain temperatures in crystals of the (100) orienta-tion 6-8has not been explained satisfactorily. It is the aim of this study to clarify this aspect of the orientation and temperature dependence of the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals. The work-hardening characteristics of single crystals of aluminum of ( 110) orientation have been studied at room temperatur "'12 and above." They have not been studied at temperatures where the virgin flow stress is dependent on temperature or where, in Seeger's terminology is important. The work hardening of single crystals of (110) orientation is of interest for another reason. As shown in Table I, the dislocation reactions that are possible in the (110) orientation are similar in certain respects to those that are possible in the (100) orientation. Hence, the deformation of single crystals of silver of (110) orientation was studied in the temperature range 100° to 900°K at intervals of 200°K. The effect of solute concentration on the plastic deformation of fcc single crystals of single-slip orientation has been studied by several investiaators.> In all of these investigations—with the exception of Ref. 20—single crystals of identical orientation have not been used, with the result that the orientation dependence of plastic deformation is superimposed on the effect of the solute. THE taconites in general are hard, tough ores, difficult to grind. Liberation of iron mineral constituents usually is accomplished by grinding the ore through at least 100 mesh, and often it has been found necessary to grind substantially through 325 mesh to achieve satisfactory recovery and grade in the concentration process. Because of the fineness of grind required and the enormous tonnages of material contemplated for treatment in the future, costs resulting from grinding media wear and power consumption, together with capital investment required for comminution, approach astronomical figures. Economy in any one of these elements per ton of material ground could very well reflect a considerable saving to the ferrous industry in yearly costs. With this in mind, the Research Laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. have launched a program to discover means of effecting this economy. The initial phase of the work as described here deals with a heat treatment of crushed raw ore, followed by thermal shock in cooling, for the preparation of rod mill feed. Several investigators 1-5 have noted an improvement in the grindabilities of ores treated in this manner. One investigator2 subjected low grade iron ores to heat treatment in an electric furnace. Basing his conclusions on screen analyses of crushed products, he observed that treated ore was more easily crushed than the untreated. He reported that observation of the treated and untreated ore through a microscope revealed cracks following the grain boundaries in treated ore, whereas no cracks were present in untreated ore. However, few if any have quantified the improvement in terms of total hp hours saved, reduction of wear of grinding media, or reduction of capital costs of grinding equipment involved. By means of Bond rod mill and ball mill grindabilities6 and by comparative wear tests, the conditions maintained during this investigation have been definitely evaluated. Heat treatment experiments have been made on a batch scale in a muffle furnace, followed by continuous scale experiments in a rotary kiln under various conditions of temperature, atmosphere, retention time, and quenching to determine the combination that would give the greatest improvement in the grindability of a taconite without affecting adversely the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetite. From these data, relative costs have been calculated for grinding both untreated and heat treated ore on a basis of plant capacity of 120 tons per hour. Heat requirements for a rotary kiln, as well as the kiln capacity required for the treatment, have been estimated. For these tests 50 tons of ore were obtained from the Aurora mine of the Erie Mining Co., Hibbing, Minn. The ore was reported' to have been selected from the magnetic portion of the lower chert horizons. An average chemical analysis of this portion is shown in Table I and an approximate mineralogical analysis is shown in Table II. No attempt was made to differentiate between the various silicates because the compositions vary widely on the different horizons and depend on the degree of oxidation. Minnesotite, however, is the predominant silicate. The siderite grains were dispersed throughout the ore but were essentially associated with the rock-forming minerals. EDWIN LUDLOW, the 41st President of the A. I. M. E., died in Muskogee, Okla., on Feb. 10, 1924, after a brief illness of influenza followed by pneumonia. He was born in Oakdale, Long Island, N. Y., March 12, 1858, a son of William Handy and Louise (Nicoll) Ludlow, attended Flushing (L. I.) Institute 1868-75: and Columbia School of Mines (N. Y.) where he graduated with the degree of Engineer of Mines with the Class of 1879. After graduation his first employment was as assistant engineer in river and harbor work on the Delaware River near Philadelphia. In 1881 he went to Mexico as one of the engineers on the Mexican Central Railroad, then building from Laredo, Texas, to Mexico City. The road being in financial difficulties he returned to the United, [states, and shortly thereafter was made superintendent of the Union Coal Co.'s collieries located in the western middle anthracite field, between Shamokin and Mt. Carmel. Ludlow and Arthur H. Storrs, then superintendent of the Neilson Shaft Colliery, in Shamokin, were known throughout that section as the baby superintendents, both under 25 years of age. among uranium alloy systems are the U-Zr, U-Ti,and U-Mo binary systems, in that an intermediate phase, of limited solubility range, exists in each system. These intermediate phase alloys offer a promising field of investigation, both as binary alloys and as ternary alloy combinations. While a limited amount of work has been done on the binary alloys, none has been done on ternary combinations of these alloys. As a possible prelude to more intensive investigation of these systems, a study of the phase relationships between the 6 phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems was undertaken. The solid-state portions of the binary constitutional diagrams for the U-Ti,1 Zr-Ti,2 and U-Zr3 systems are shown in Fig. 1. The solid to liquid transformations are not shown, as these transformations were not studied in the ternary system. The phase designations employed are based upon those shown in the uranium constitutional diagrams. The crystal structures of the various phases are given in Table I. Experimental Materials and Methods The ternary section presented is based upon the results of thermal, metallographic, and X-ray analyses of a series of alloys ranging in composition between the phases of the U-Zr and U-Ti systems (U-74 atomic pct Zr to U-35 atomic pct Ti). After preparation of the alloys, thermal data were obtained. On the basis of these data, specimens were heat treated and examined metallographically. Specimens were then selected from those heat treated for X-ray determination of the phases present in what were considered critical phase regions. Alloy and Specimen Preparation—Alloys for this investigation were prepared from selected as-reduced uranium and crystal-bar zirconium and titanium. For nominal compositions, see Table 11. Charges were arc melted from five to seven times under a helium atmosphere, finally being cast into wire-bar form for fabrication. A zirconium getter button was used to clean the furnace atmosphere prior to melting. The alloys were homogenized 20 hr at 900 °C and furnace cooled. A portion of each bar was then removed for thermal analysis; the remainder was saved for fabrication. Alloys 8 through 14 were placed in steel tubes along with zirconium getter chips and, after flushing with argon, the tubes were welded shut and rolled at 1500 °F to a 50 pct reduction in diam. The remaining alloys were annealed 24 hr at ll00°F to insure transformation of the ? phase to the 8-U2Ti phase and were then hot rolled from a salt bath. Attempts to roll alloys 6 and 7 at 1100 °F were unsuccessful. Following this, attempts were made to roll pieces of alloys 1 through 5, which had cracked rather severely during casting, at 1200 °F, but these efforts were also unsuccessful. These alloys were, therefore, further treated in their cast and homogenized condition. All alloys were pickled to remove oxide formed during rolling. Thermal data were obtained on these alloys by conventional differential thermal analysis at a heating rate of 30C per min, and by a high-speed heating method at rates of approximately 10°C per sec. To prove this, I need quote only two of his assertions, the italics being mine: "lt is a stern fundamental principle that a11 natural resources are the inalienable property of the crown.'' "The right to a claim should only exist as long as it is worked or taxed to insure work. Once depart from that sound maxim, there results improper control of the natural resources of the country, which primarily belong to the people." These assertions formed the basis of my criticism1 of Dr. Raymond's paper in 1913, and they should be inscribed in letters of gold above the entrance to the office of every county recorder in the United States. I venture to assert that the existing United States mineral land laws are essentially unfair to the nation and a hindrance to the legitimate miner, because they fail to embody the above quoted principlca; and this applies both to state laws east of the Mississippi and to federal laws in the West. That these laws favor the forestaller and the monopolist, defraud the government of its fair share of the profits of mineral production, and tend to industrial feudalism must be evident to any competent unbiassed observer. The fact that no serious political movement arose to change them, until the conservation agitation of the last decade, may be largely explained by two salient conditions. First, as stated by President Winchell, "for a long time there was such a vast surplus, or excessive amount of unwanted, undesirable land in the West that the land offices did not scrutinize the claim sought to be located;" second, that the millions of individual farm owners throughout the country could easily be aroused, by the special pleaders hired by the great land speculators and monopolists, to use their vast political power for the suppression of any statesmen striving to incorporate in our semi-feudal land laws any such principles as those quoted from Mr. Godson. While agreeing with Mr. Godson that a freehold or fee-simple title, if coupled with obligatory continuous work, may have the same practical effect as a lease, it seems to be the experience of the most active and

The brass-rolling industry has not had a great deal of experience with antimony in its product. There have been some recent excursions with antimony as a corrosion inhibitor in tubes, but in sheet brass it has been regarded with apprehension and generally avoided. This is not to say that contaminations have never occurred, and probably a great many brass mill men have had their own ideas on the effect of such contamination. Our own views were based upon certain experiences some years ago with strip castings that split lengthwise in the early stages of rolling. The nature of this splitting is shown in Fig. I, from a photograph taken in 1922 as a record of 20 bars of 65-35 common brass made with an antimonial brand of copper. These bars were cast 6¾ in. wide by I in. thick by 45 in. long. In the first pass through the rolls, 19 of the 20 split lengthwise throughout their length, while each half curved outward in a wide arc as it emerged from the rolls. In those days, if splitting was not a frequent occurrence, it was not unfamiliar. One can recall periods of short duration when large amounts of common brass would behave in this way. There was nothing imaginary about these spells. The affected metal would split lengthwise in the breakdown rolls, and no maneuvering of mill practice made any difference. The condition would descend like a plague, demoralize the mill for several days, and disappear. It is doubtful if anyone knew the cause—however many explanations may have been current. The petroleum industry of western Pennsylvania and southwestern New York lias been one of phenomenal development. Greater and more sudden flucuations hare occurred in the price* of crude oil, and in all the collateral interests dependent upon its production, than in the case of any other mineral product which has been extensively exploited in the United States. This was more particularly so from the commencement of drilling for oil in 1859 down to the end of 1877. The experience gained during these early years has enabled the oil men to operate more intelligently since; the business is not now attended with the hazardous risks with which it is generally credited. The most important questions connected with the oil industry are those of (a) the oil-supply, and (6) the possible ultimate exhaustion of the field. Since 1876 my attention has been directed to the study of the statistics of the product of the oil regions. In January, 1880, in order to slow some interesting points connected with these questions, I prepared a graphic chart which was used to illustrate a lecture on petroleum delivered before the Franklin Institute. This chart was afterwards reconstructed in two distinct forms for publication in the census report. on Petroleum and its Products. These latter I have redrawn in a condensed form, and have extended them to include the statistics up to 1885, for publication in the Transac tions of the Institute, in conjuction with a map of the oil-re&'~IOIIS prepared by Mr. John F. CarII and myself. It is hoped that these illustrations will be found interesting to the members of the Institute, and of practical utility to oil-men, without any extended discussion, since it is my desire to make only such brief references to them and give such additional detailed facts as may serve to make the prominent features understood.

The thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutions of copper, silver, and gold in liquid tin is not explained by current solution theories.1-3 The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpies, or heats of solution, of silver, gold, and platinum in liquid lead at 623°K have been measured in the investigation reported here. Their interpretation requires a modification of the regular-solution theory although lead-rich solutions may be expected to be simpler than tin-rich solutions. The liquid metal solution calorimeter used has been described.4 At the start of a run the bath consisted of 621 g of reagent-grade lead. Several calibrating additions of lead were made during a run; a value of 3.48 kcal per g-atom5 was taken for H623°K - H273°K Two runs were made with each of the solutes silver, gold, and platinum. Annealed wire samples of 99.999+ pct purity were used. Four to six samples each weighing 0.5 to 1,0 g were added from 273°K to the bath at 623°K and the associated heat effects were measured. The samples dissolved in approximately 3 min. No serious experimental difficulties were encountered. The heat effects of the additions in a run plotted against the average atom fraction of solute before and after each addition314 were linear functions of the concentration in lead of silver, gold, and platinum, respectively. By subtracting the difference between the heat contents of a solute element at 623° and. 273°K5 from the measuredheat effects, the partial gram-atomic enthalpy relative to the solid solute was obtained. The relativ: partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution and the concentration dependence of the partial gram-atomic enthalpies obtained from the plots of vs atomic fraction x are listed in Table I. The relative partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of silver in lead of 5.46 kcal per g-atom at 623°K compares with values at 723°K of 5.74' and 5.765 kcal per g-atom. These data yield a temperature coefficient of 3.0 cal per g-atom-OK. The partial gram-atomic enthalpy at infinite dilution of gold in lead at 623°K is 0.89 kcal per g-atom compared with 0.85 kcal per g-atoms (obtained by extrapolation) and 0.95 kcal per g-atom.5 By combining these values for 623°K with those for several other temperatures5" the temperature coefficient of was found to be 3.2 cal per g-atom-OK. Metallurgical processes cannot be conducted successfully With out the aid of analytical chemistry. The great perfection of Iead smelting in the West, for instance, has only been accomplished by the analysis of ores, fluxes, slags and all products of the furnace. Ores are mixed and fluxed to obtain a slag of desired composition. Account is even taken of the composition of the ashes obtained from the coke. The " muscular " smelter has left the field forever! This state of affairs has been induced by sharp competition, i.e., by a com plete separation of the industries of mining and reducing ores, not by the liberality and wisdom of directors and stockholders to pro vide laboratories and engage chemists, or by their love for scientific investigation. It would be considered absurd, at present, to run a lead-smelter, a blast-furnace for pig-iron, or a Bessemer plant without the assist ance of a well-equipped laboratory and a chemist; but it is con sidered quite sufficient to provide amalgamation- or lixiviation works merely with a crude assay-office, and an assayer who is paid less than a laborer in the mill. In my opinion, this will change in the near future. By the ex clusion of Mexican lead-ores, and their growiring scarcity in the West, smelters have been forced to raise their charges on so-called dry silver-ores, and cannot handle the latter now in such unlimited quantities as formerly. The inevitable result must be that the sur plus of these dry silver-ores, especially those of low grade, will be reduced by processes cheaper than smelbing; and here the introduc tion of lixiviation has an excellent field, provided the muscular lixiviator has an able chemist for an assistant. It is to be regretted that so little analytical work has been done in lixiviation. (con~munication to the Secretary*):—It is not in a spirit of criticism that I offer a supplemental suggestion or two on the subjects covered by this valuable and highly instructive memoir. There are two points which, in my opinion, should have received greater emphasis in Mr. Emmons's excellent paper. One is the fundamental r6le played by the chlorides under certain conditions in ore-formation. The other is the possible establishment of geographic relationships among the four pheilomena of (1) excessive chlo-ridic content of mine-waters; (2) the abundance of chloridic compounds of the precious metals; (3) the presence of man-gancse oxides; and (4) the diminishing importance, in ore-genesis, of the metallic sulphates. Although Mr. Emmons's notes refer to gold alone, it may be pertinently asked whether the same principles do not hold good for silver and copper also, since these metals form, together with gold, a distinct and well-known chemical group. That the reactions involved apply equally well to the other two metals mentioned, is sbown by a number of recent observations and discussions. Chloridic ores of silver are, as I have lately endeavored to show, mainly worked in arid or desert regions only; and the great deposits of disseminated copper-ores are similarly characteristic of such regions, in which both classes doubtless owe their formation to the abundance of saline materials derived from desert dusts, and to the plentiful and almost universal presence of manganese oxide. Under these climatic conditions, silver is somewhat more abundantly deposited than copper and gold, because its chloride is so much less soluble. Beryl is a mineral that may be difficult to distinguish from quartz by casual field inspection. The easily recognized green color and hexagonal crystal form of coarse-grained beryl are by no means universal, even in beryl from pegmatitic deposits. If it occurred as a fine-grained accessory mineral in an igneous rock, it would almost certainly escape detection unless samples were submitted for petrographic or chemical analysis. There may be substantial deposits of some beryllium mineral, other than beryl, that has been overlooked because that mineral also closely resembles the common rock-forming minerals. A reliable and simple method of identifying beryllium minerals and determining the beryllium content of a rock would be helpful in exploration. This article describes preliminary experiments in applying nuclear reaction to the qualitative identification of beryl and to the semiquantitative determination of the beryllium content of rock samples. Gaudin,1,2 the first to apply a nuclear reaction in detecting beryllium minerals, developed a method that irradiates the sample with gamma rays, which react with beryllium nuclei to produce neutrons. The neutrons are then measured with standard equipment. The cross section for this reaction is about 1 millibarn. The cross section is a measure of the probability that a reaction will take place, for example, between a beryllium nucleus and an incident gamma ray or alpha particles.3-5 At 1-millibarn cross section for the reaction, satisfactory performance required a source strength of the order of 1 curie (3.7 x 10"' disintegrations per sec, where each disintegration releases one or more gamma rays). The reactions will not take place if the gamma radiation is below a minimum energy, in this case 1.63 mev. The size of the source and the energy of the radiation made heavy shielding necessary for these experiments, both to reduce the background count of the neutron counter and to safeguard personnel. The original discovery of the neutron by Chad-wick in 1932 resulted from experiments with another nuclear reaction, induced by bombarding beryllium with alpha particles in which the products are carbon-12 and neutrons. The equation for this reaction is as follows:' " ,Be" + ,He'? 6C12 + 8,n' [1] re-particle neutron In the above nuclear equation (Eq. 1), the sub- script number indicates the number of protons in the nucleus (the atomic number) and the superscript the total number of neutrons and protons (approximately the atomic mass). For the alpha-neutron reaction the cross section is about 250 milli-barns, or 250 times that of the gamma-neutron reaction used by Gaudin. The positively charged alpha particle is repelled by the positive charge of the beryllium nucleus; it must, therefore, have a certain minimum energy in order to approach close enough to the beryllium nucleus to react. For reaction with the beryllium nucleus, the lower limit of the alpha-particle energy is 3.7 mev. The alpha-neutron reaction, with polonium-210 as an alpha source, was selected for the present experiments. Alpha particles are emitted by polonium-210 at 5.30 mev, which is adequate for the reaction with beryllium. Furthermore, this isotope of polonium emits alpha particles with negligible associated gamma radiation, thus eliminating the necessity of shielding. The half-life of polonium-210 is 138 days. Inasmuch as alpha particles carry a possible charge and are large compared with most nuclear particles, their energy is rapidly dissipated in passing through matter. Their range in standard air is 3.66 cm,3 and they penetrate only a few tens of microns into a mineral sample. The short range in air can be minimized by preparation of a flat sample surface that can be brought very close to the alpha source during analysis. On the other hand, short range of alpha particles in air lessens the radiological health hazard and makes it possible to use this method without shielding. It must be emphasized, however, that the alpha emitters are potentially very dangerous if they enter the human body. Polonium must be handled with extreme caution. The literature has reported experiments on the yield of neutrons from reaction of alpha particles with beryllium nuclei. Feld" reports that in intimate mixtures of polonium and beryllium, 3 x 106 eutrons per sec are produced per curie of polonium. Elsewhere in the same reference it is stated that a sandwich-type source yields about one third as many neutrons as an intimate mixture. A table of neutron yields for full energy polonium alpha-particles on thick targets as reported by Anderson7 is the basis of Table I. From Table I it can be deduced that the elements most likely to interfere, i.e., those that also produce neutrons when bombarded by alpha particles, are boron and fluorine. These data also show that it will probably not be possible to determine very small quantities of beryllium in rocks because of the masking effects of the major elements, sodium, magnesium, and aluminum. It is a pleasure for me to keynote this first Western Regional Minerals and Coal Conference here in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is pleasing for two main reasons. First, Homestake Mining Company has been associated with the Black Hills since 1875 when gold was discovered following Custer's trek through the Hills during 1874. Second, the future mineral development of the Black Hills will depend, to a great extent, on minerals and metals covered in this conference. The metals and minerals that are featured in this conference have unique similarities--and important differences--and therefore, will be of great interest to all who are involved in our industry in this area of the country. Precious metals have always been, and likely will always be, subject to political influence; they are only partially affected by the demands of our industrial economy. Energy minerals, while more directly affected by industrial stimulus, are also politically sensitive. In this regard, the need for a minerals policy affecting the energy sphere has been made very clear to us in the last five years. More importantly, the lack of a national policy and purpose relating to our total future energy needs has severely affected the overall economy and security of this country. Very briefly today, I would like to outline for you my thoughts on the future of these most important minerals. I will start by a discussion of precious metals, primarily my favorite precious metal, gold. A brief history of gold will be helpful in setting a perspective for forecasting its future although it is difficult to give a brief description of a metal that has been prized by man for over 6,000 years. THE oil-bearing districts of Poland are found on the slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The oil belt extends from Gorlice southeast to Stanislawow. It is approximately 250 miles long and 30 miles wide, and comprises four geological districts: the western, or Gorlice district; next, to the east, the Krosno district; the Boryslaw district; and, in the extreme southeast, the Stanislawow district. The amount of petroleum produced in Poland from the beginning of the oil industry scarcely totals 26,000,000 metric tons, or 15 per cent. of the estimated supply. Of this amount, 18,000,000 tons have been taken from the fields of Boryslaw within 25 years; and only about 8,000,000 tons from all other fields within a period twice as long, although some of these other fields represent just as good possibilities as did Boryslaw at the beginning of its development. The Polish oil industry was severely stricken by the war. The retreating Russian armies, in 1915, destroyed a large number, of the existing oil wells, nor was the post-war period favorable for the development of this industry;; the money and credit stringency interfered with the expansion of drilling. But since 1921 there has. been a slow steady increase in production and there is now every reason to believe that conditions in the industry will improve. In fact, an increase in new drillings has been reported for the current year. The production of crude oil in Poland, in 1913, amounted to 1,113,668 metric tons. In 1914, the production declined- to 655,600 metric tons. In 1921, the production was 705,596 tons; in 1922, 712,428 tons, and in 1923, 737,182 tons; or more than 5,000,000 bbl. But the fields have a much greater potential output, which could be realized were the capital available for prospecting and new drilling. The principal producing, and at present most exploited, fields are around Boryslaw and Schodnica. These fields were developed rapidly for in the first year of their modern exploitation the wells were gushers of moderate depth. However, as a result of heavy drilling, the shallow folds have been exhausted and oil can be reached now only by deep drilling. Wells of almost 5600 ft. have been drilled in Boryslaw. Because of these drilling conditions, a large number of engineers and workmen specially skilled in deep drilling are to be found in this field.

lntermediate phases in the binary metal alloy systems Ti-Zn, Ti-Hg, Zr-Zn, Zr-Cd, and Zr-Hg have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction methods. Gamma-TiBHg and Zr3Hg have a beta tungsten structure; TiHg and ZrHg are analogous to ordered AuCu (L l0 type); delta-TixHg and ZrHg, are isomorphous with ordered AuCu,, (L l2 type); ZrZnz is face-centered cubic (C 15 type); TiZna crystallizes in a C 14 type structure; and Zrll-, occurs in cubic and tetragonal modifications in which a random distribution of atoms exists. Additional information for the intermediate phase TiZn, is presented. THE physical metallurgy of titanium and zir-conium when alloyed with elements in subgroup 11-B of the periodic table has received comparatively little attention in the literature. Laves and Wallbaum' reported the existence of several intermediate phases in the system Ti-Zn. They identified TiZn as a CsCl (B 2) structure and described TiZn, as an ordered Cu,Au (L 1, type) crystal structure. Gebhardt' investigated very limited zinc-rich regions in the systems Ti-Zn and Zr-Zn. Phase relationships in these partial constitution diagrams were deduced from the results of thermal analysis and metallography, X-ray results being inconclusive. The first zinc-rich intermediate phase in either system was not identified. More recently, Anderson, Boyle, and Ramsey" have had occasion to refer to a partial Ti-Zn phase diagram (unpublished data) covering the region 0 to 10 atomic pct Ti, wherein two intermediate phases corresponding approximately to TiZn,, and TiZn,, were indicated. The metals used in this investigation and typical analyses as determined by the suppliers are given in Table I. The iodide-process zirconium which was used was not hafnium free. Experimental Methods Alloy Preparation: The relative ease with which titanium and zirconium combine with other elements places extensive restrictions on the methods by which alloying can be achieved. The direct current electric arc melting procedure was found to be unsatisfactory for preparing these binary alloys and for this reason solid state diffusion methods were utilized. The iodide process titanium and zirconium rods were filed by hand. Fines were subjected to a magnetic separation and classified as to size as either finer than 200 mesh or coarser than 200 but finer than 80 mesh. Powder mixtures of various binary combinations of titanium and zirconium with zinc and cadmium were compacted in a 12 mm diameter die and then placed in Vycor or quartz vials which were evacuated and sealed. The mercury alloys were prepared in a similar manner; the proper weight of liquid mercury being placed in a vial with minus 200 mesh titanium or zirconium. These ampoules were then heat treated at various temperatures and times depending on the characteristics of the particular alloy system. Upon completion of the heat treatment the ampoules were cooled rapidly and the specimens weighed. The loss in weight varied from 1 to 3 pct (except as noted in the text) and for this reason the calculated compositions were accepted as a fair measure of the actual alloy compositions. X-Ray Dif raction Techniques: Powder diffraction experiments were conducted at room temperature with a 143.2 mm Debye-Scherrer X-ray camera in which the film was placed in the Straumanis arrangement. When copper radiation was used, a nickel filter was employed, and for the cobalt target a filter of iron oxide was used. In both cases, the /i? filter was placed between the X-ray target and the powder specimen which was mounted on a glass fiber. AT a joint meeting of the Tulsa Geological Society and the Mid-Continent Section of the A; I. M. E., held at Tulsa on March 21, the history of unit development in the Kettle- man Hills field was discussed. Robert C. Patterson? Super- visor for the U. S. Geological Survey at Taft, Calif., was the speaker. An abstract of some of his remarks follows: On July 1, 1923, curtailment agreement for two years was made between the operators of North Dome Kettleman and the U. S. Department of the Interior. In this it was agreed to consider a plan of unit development, or other cooperate method of developing the structure. As a result, Kettleman North Dome Association was incorporated in December, 1930, as a non-profit cooperative corporation under the laws of California. Approved in January, 1931, by California Oil and Gas Supervisor and by Secretary of Interior. On Feb. 10, 1931, it became an active organization through election of executive officers and eleven- directors. General manager chosen. Association started to function April 1, 1931. Assumed control of 10,800 acres of proved and semi-proved land, as shown in Table 1.

This paper deals with the calculation of the composition of the infinitesimal trace of alloy that transfers from the liquid to the solid state at each temperature during the equilibrium solidification of a binary solid solution, and which thereby enables the compositions of the coexisting liquid and solid phases to follow along the liquidus and solidus lines respectively during the cooling. A general expressioll for the composition (6) of the liquid-to-solid transfer at each temperature has been derived: , = Zlxl{xl - P) + ZsXsiP - xs) [I] Zl(xl -P)+ Zs{P - xs) where ZL and Zs are the slopes of the liquidus and solidus lines at the given temperature, xl and xs are the compositions of the stable liquid and solid phases at the same temperature, and P is the composition of the alloy under consideration. The d equation is valid for the process of equilibrium heating as well as cooling, and may be applied to vapor-to-liquid, vapor-to-solid, liquid-to-liquid, and solid-to-solid transfers if the corresponding equilibrium diagrams are known. The d-versus-temperature curves for two alloys P1 and P2 are shown in Fig. I. In each case, the liquid-to-solid transfer has the same composition as the stable solid phase only at the temperature of the beginning of solidification, and has the same composition as the stable liquid phase only at the temperature of the completion of solidification. At each intermediate temperature, the composition of the liquid-to-solid transfer differs by a finite amount from those of the two coexisting phases. Therefore, during equilibrium cooling. the transfers must merge into the solid phase from the liquid without forming a transition phase; otherwise the condition of equilibrium would be violated. The abundance and value of the tellurium minerals of Colorado is well known, but, as yet, few analyses have been made of them, and I offer these as a small contribution to the chemistry of these valuable ores. 1. Native Tellurium.—The specimens from which the analyses of this mineral were made are from the " John Jay" Mine, Boulder County, Colorado, where it occurs in quite large masses, though mixed with more or less silica and iron pyrites. It is usually a finegrained, tin-white mineral, but sometimes occurs in distorted, hexagonal prisms in cavities in the quartz. Before the blowpipe it gives the reactions for tellurium, sulphur and iron; by cupellation, it yields a small amount of gold. An analysis of a coarsely crystallized specilnen gave the following results : Specific gravity, 5.10.5.
