The thermodynamzc properties oJ liquid Cd-Sb alloys were investigated using the cell arrangement measurments were obtained every 2°C at a heating and cooling rate of 12°C per hr and at equilibrium every 2O0C frorn 500°C down through the stable liquidus. The S-shaped asCd US composition curve was used in the cotnposition regzon near Cd,Sb, to calculate a tempeerture-dependent inleraction coefficient from quasichemical theory. Rapid changes in a scd were observed at a transition temperature varying from 400" to 465°C depending on con/kosition. It could not be determined if the changes in aScd were discontinuous, but tlze composition dependeke of the magnitude of the change is indicative of a second-order phase transformation in the liquid. The values of the experimental changes in ASCd are in agreement with calculations from the slope of the transition temperature, using the concept that a second-ovdev phase transition occurs in liquid Cd-Sb alloys. II is suggested that the transformalion is associated with the formation of Cd4Sb3 molecules in the liquid. ThE structure of liquid alloys is the subject of many investigations. X-ray, resistivity, and thermody-namic data have been interpreted as indicating varying degrees of short-range order in the liquid in alloy systems forming inter metallic compounds. In general, the melting process is not a transition from an ordered to a completely disordered state, but some degree of order is retained in the liquid. Maximum ordering in the liquid state occurs close to the melting temperature of the compound and the arrangement of atoms becomes more random at higher temperatures. Of special interest in this respect is the Cd-Sb system. It is one of the few metallic systems which form both stable and metastable compounds when liquid alloys are cooled at normal rates. The stable system exhibits an intermetallic compound, CdSb, melting at 459"c.l A second compound, CdrSbs, has also been reported,' melting close to this temperature. The metastable system has one compound, CdsSbz, melting at 420"c.I Resistivity measurements on liquid Cd-Sb alloys close to the liquidus temperatures have been interpreted in terms of a complex ordering behavior which changes rapidly with increasing temperature.3 The resistivity-composition curve is characterized by two maxima corresponding in composition to CdSb and CdsSbz. The resistivity-temperature plots show sharp breaks for alloys in the composition range of 45 to 70 at. pct Cd on cooling through a transition temperature close to the stable liquidus. Fisher and phillips4 investigated the influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of liquid CdSb alloys. The viscosity of some alloys increases sharply on supercooling below the stable liquidus. A maximum in the viscosity-composition curve occurs at the composition CdSb. The thermodynamic properties of liquid Cd-Sb alloys have been investigated by Seltz and ~e~itt' and Elliott and chipmane by the electromotive-force method and their results are in good agreement. However, these investigations were carried out at temperatures well above the liquidus temperatures of the alloys, and the temperature coefficients of the electromotive force, dE/dT, were obtained from experimental points for each alloy at a few temperatures considerably above the liquidus temperature. Scheil and ~aach' investigated the thermodynamic properties of this system by the dew point method in the temperature range from about 100°C above the stable liquidus down into the supercooled liquid region. They reported several anomalies, i.e., the activity of a melt on heating differed from that on cooling, and the activity increased sharply in the limited temperature interval immediately above the liquidus temperature of the stable alloy, followed by a sudden decrease below the liquidus. Values obtained on heating and cooling were not in agreement. A reinvesti-gation of a few alloys by Scheil and Kalkuhl' by the electromotive-force method failed to confirm these observations. The authors concluded that the anomalies were due to inhomogeneities in the starting alloys and they discarded their previous results. The present investigation was undertaken in order to obtain thermodynamic data close to the liquidus temperature and in the supercooled region where the anomalies were originally reported, employing the electro motive-force method. This method is quite precise and will most easily permit observations of small changes in activity and partial molar entropy with temperature. Measurements were taken every few degrees so that the dE/dT values could be calculated over the entire temperature range and small changes in the thermodynamic properties close to the liquidus temperature could be observed. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were prepared from 99.999+ pct Cd and Sb (Cominco). Surface oxide was removed by scraping and then melting the metals under vacuum and filtering through Pyrex wool. Since the adoption by the U. S. Bureau of Standards several years ago of specifications for standard 100- and 200-mesh sieves, frequent requests have been received that this Bureau test and certify sieves of other sizes than these. With a view to the adoption of a series of standard testing sieves which might be of use to all industries making fineness tests, this Bureau for two years has been studying the question of such a standard screen scale. Various scales that have been proposed were considered, and information was sought of representative firms in the various industries interested as to their requirements. Manufacturers of sieves have also been consulted as to the desirability of different screen scales and the practicability of their manufacture. As a result of this study of the question, a conference was called at the Bureau of Standards, Apr. 20, 1916, of representatives of various committees of the American Society for Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Foundrymen's Association, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Water Works Association, American Institute of Metals and the American Spice Trade Association; also representatives of the Committee of Revision of the U. S. Pharmacopæia, the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Office of Public Roads and Rural Engineering, the U. S. Office of Grain Standardization and the U. S. Bureau of Standards; also representatives of a number of private firms engaged in industries in which sieves are used, such as the glass, the drug milling, the abrasive, the asphalt, the mining, the spice, the chemical, and the graphite industries; also representatives of the firms in this country manufacturing wire cloth and sieves. The effects of percent solids, mill loading, and grinding time on product size distribution and ball wear were studied in a laboratory ball mill for a taconite ore. Mild steel balls and HCLA steel balls were used to examine the role that ball hardness play in grinding. Net production of - 44-µm (- 325-mesh) material reached maximum at 70% solids, whereas the ball wear decreased as pulp density increased. HCLA steel balls ground the taconite ore finer than mild steel balls under otherwise identical conditions. Examination of ball surfaces with a scanning electron microscope suggested that corrosive wear was mini- mal under nitrogen flushing conditions, and that grinding with mild steel balls involved nipping rather than attrition, whereas grinding with harder HCLA balls involved both nipping and attrition. Pulp viscosity controlled the thickness of pulp layer on balls, thereby affecting grinding efficiency and ball wear.

A CERTAIN amount of interest has been indicated recently in the resistance to oxidation at high temperatures of iron-aluminum alloys (rich in iron). Hautman1 published a paper in which some interesting results are given. According to his paper, only alloys containing at least 8 per cent aluminum indicate a marked improvement in their resistance to oxidation. At about this aluminum content, however, alloys become brittle, which considerably reduces their commercial value. About two years ago the author performed a series of experiments, the results of which are presented here. A series of iron-aluminum-carbon alloys was prepared by melting electrolytic iron, aluminum and high-carbon iron alloy in an induction vacuum furnace.2 The list of these alloys is given in Table 1. The authors presented an article2† last year on colloidal properties of clay suspensions in which they attempted to sustain the position that the behavior of clay suspensions is due primarily to the mechanical interference of the platy particles, the nature and extent of the interference being profoundly influenced by the character of the surfaces of the particles, which in turn is determined primarily by the nature and amount of adsorbed foreign materials held on the surface of the particles by forces which are predominantly chemical in type. The following discussion is a continuation of that article to extend these same interpretative points of view to the behavior of clay gels. Insight into the mechanism of gelation is certainly of outstanding importance in the handling of drilling muds. In the former article it was suggested that the thin, flat plates that constitute the ultimate clay particles may build up aggregates by the overlapping of the ultimate plates face to face much longer and perhaps also much wider than the ultimate plates themselves, but not appreciably thicker. Exhaustive microscopic examinations of characteristic clays show no tendency for the larger particles, clearly visible under the microscope, to orient themselves in this way. It is true that the gelation of the clays is due primarily to the smallest particles, unresolvable other than by the ultramicroscope, so that the possibility of the deve1opment by them of an overlapping structure is not excluded. Furthermore, as one approaches the limit of resolving power of the microscope, the difficulty of observing accurately the shapes and relative positions of particles incresses excessively. However, in the absence of any observable tendency toward overlapping orientation of the large, visible particles, one hesitates to ascribe such a tendency to the smaller particles beyond the range of visibility. Should it develop that one must exclude the assumption of overlapping orientation, the explanations offered in the previous article are changed in only one respect; namely, one would now have to assume that the ultimate particles themselves have length, and probably also width, very large in comparison with their thickness.

The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps that are upgraded by selective desliming can result in indiscriminate flocculation of both iron oxide and siliceous gangue slimes. In order to overcome this adverse effect, deflocculation by three complexing agents, namely ethylenediaminetetzaacetate (EDTA), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), was investigated. The precipitates and complexes of these agents with calcium ion were characterized by potentiometric and conductometric titrations, and the surface properties of quartz and goethite were studied in the presence of calcium ion and of the complexing agents by means of streaming potential measurements and flotation tests. The results were then correlated with selective flocculation tests on an artificial mixture of quartz and goethite. EDTA markedly improved the selectivity of flocculation when added in near stoichiometric amounts, whereas STPP was less effective and SHMP was totally ineffective due to strong, indiscriminate dispersion. Remanent calcium polyphosphates on the goethite surface interfered with the adsorption of starch flocculant.

COMPOUNDS of rare-earth and iron-group elements are of technical interest because of their unusual magnetic properties. To date, however, all magnetic measurements1-4 have been made with polycrystalline, often polyphase, samples. For the measurement of anisotropic properties, single-crystal samples are necessary to avoid the averaging effect of randomly oriented grains. The purpose of this note is to describe a technique with which we have grown relatively large single crystals of YCo5, NdCo5, DyCo5, and "YFe9". Crystal growth of these materials is complicated because: 1) the binary equilibrium diagrams are, in general, not well-established; 2) in those cases where phase-equilibrium data are available, the compounds of interest are generally formed by peritectic reaction; 3) the molten component metals are chemically very reactive, making contaminaticn of the melts by the crucible material a serious problem. Techniques such as arc or levitation melting followed by strain annealing have been tried5)' in the past with these materials, but with little success because of the peritectic reactions and the inherently poor process control. For this reason we chose to use the zone-melting technique of Mason and cook7 for our work, since past workers8 have had some success in preparing single crystals of peritectic compounds by this method.

The Parachute Creek member of the Green River formation in the Piceance Basin, Colorado, contains vast reserves of oil shale, nahcolite, dawsonite, and other accessory minerals. The dry alkali process of sulfur dioxide removal using nahcolite (naturally occurring sodium bicarbonate) has great potential A room and pillar mining scheme has been designed to extract a nahcolite zone occurring at a depth of 472 m, from the lease application area of the Yankee Gulch joint venture. Geotechnical parameters affecting mine design will be discussed. A preliminary development plan for mining at the rate of 1000 t/d will be described in detail.

In a limestone mine, a large amount of slime is washed off in order to remove impurities such as clay minerals. A fine sized calcite is, consequently, wasted and freight for carring the slime to reclaim land is expensive. The separation of calcite from the slime has been investigated by the flotation process, using sodium oleate as a collector. A satisfactory flotation of calcite from the slime requires great amounts of sodium oleate, because sodium oleate is consumed by clay minerals. But, the amounts of sodium oleate required are reduced to half by adding suitable amounts of sodium silicate. After rougher and cleaner flotation, the concentrate containing more than 97% calcite is obtained with 70% recovery; thereby the amount of slime to be reclaimed is reduced to 40%.

The term "secondary aluminum" frequently is used loosely and often is considered synonomous with "inferior quality." Under war conditions, when every pound of material must contribute its share to the job at hand, this type of thinking is most unfortunate. Actually, given a supply of segregated scrap, an experienced smelter can produce remelted ingot of good quality, comparing closely to the analysis of the original material, and of considerable value of the war effort. The alloys he can produce are, of course, somewhat controlled by the analysis of the available scrap and, by the very nature of things, some of his production is not suitable for indiscriminate use. However, remelted scrap ingot provided about 273,2 per cent of this country's domestically-produced 1942 aluminum supply and probably will comprise about 39 per cent of the 1943 supply. (Canadian production is excluded from these figures.) That this part of the supply remains important is indicated by a recent report that "requirements" for the second quarter of this year were about 14 per cent greater than the supply, even though that supply will be almost twice the prewar annual production. (And those requirements, incidentally, were prepared after many conservation measures had been taken into account.) Since W. Bonsack recently has published a paper2 on the effects of the various alloying elements and impurities on the properties of aluminum, and such con¬siderations really are the important ones in a discussion of the metallurgy of secondary aluminum, it is planned to restrict this discussion more to a consideration of the sources, general characteristics and possible uses of these materials. For the purpose of this discussion, mill (or run-around) scrap may be disregarded and only plant scrap and obsolete scrap considered. Plant scrap, of course, is that scrap which is generated during the production of some part or assembly from a fabricated form of aluminum, such as sheet, tubing, forgings, castings or the like, and it may consist of solids (including rejected parts or subassemblies) or of machinings. To the extent that the several alloys are effectively segregated and the material is properly identified, the composition after remelting can be rather closely controlled or predicted. Obsolete scrap, on the other hand, is the "junk" which accumulates because of the wearing out or breakage of some piece of equipment. Although it is almost always in the form of solids, the accumulation includes many different alloys (often in the same assembly) and may include a considerable amount of nonaluminum material. The "metallics" recovered from drosses also contribute a portion of this class of material. The composition after remelting, therefore, may vary over rather wide limits and can not be very accurately predicted in any specific instance. Improved procedure in the manufacture of rail steel has come as the rail user demanded better wearing qualities combined with greater unit weight. With each weight increase per lineal yard has come greater difficulty in making a product that would successfully withstand all tests that modern rails must meet. With these facts in mind, and with a sincere desire to produce a rail whose service in track would be satisfactory in all respects, the steelmaker was quick to realize that all of the factors entering into his process would have to be more closely controlled. Control of rail-steel slags was recognized as one of the most important of many interdepending factors. The object of slag control is to hold the slag compositions within a range that gives the best results with respect to economy of production, uniformity of analysis, and quality of the finished rails. The most important component of the slag from the standpoint of these production and quality factors is the ferrous oxide content. This component is a good indicator of the basicity and oxidizing power of the slag, and these largely govern the effect of the slag on the steel. Consequently, the

THE GREAT INTEREST in decomposition and trans- formation, so evident in the study of alloys during the last two years, was reflected in the many papers on this subject, presented at the first session of the Institute of Metals, Tuesday morning. Dr. F. A. Thomson, of Montana State School of Mines, presented the first paper by C. Wilson, H. F. Silliman, and E. C. Little, "Rate of Precipitation of Nickel Silicide and Cobalt Silicide in the Hardenable Copper-nickel-silicon and Copper- cobalt-silicon Alloys." Dr. R. F. Mehl, in discussing this paper, stated that the title was somewhat deceptive, as it indicated that the rate of precipitation is determined; the method used is a measurement of electrical conductivity and hardness, neither of which is suitable for a quantitative measurement of rates of reaction or precipitation in the solid state. Hardness is also uncertain because it depends so much upon particle size. Of the various methods proposed for the study of rate of reaction and precipitation the evaluation of volume of reaction produced from the area of photomicrograph is the best.

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground " caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time.

The authors present a general outline of the theory and development of heavy-liquid application to mineral processing. Patent literature and processes are reviewed with special emphasis on liquid recovery systems which have been employed or proposed. Advantages and disadvantages of the process are discussed together with the recent developments which have revived interest in this old concentration method. The most important single factor in this resurgence of interest is concluded to be the narrowing gulf between chemical engineering and mineral dressing which has opened the field for new concepts of mineral plant design. A partial summary of patents on heavy liquid separations is included. In spite of the fact that heavy-liquid separation with organic liquids has been used in the laboratory for over 50 years, this process has never graduated to large scale commercial use for any extended period. However, a variation of this process, the sink-float or heavy-media separation process has found wide acceptance and is used to separate minerals from diamonds to gravel. Materials used to increase the specific gravity of the pulps used as heavy media include sand, clay, barite, magnetite, galena, hematite, atomized lead and ferrosilicon. Because of the greater ease of recovery, the magnetic materials, magnetite and ferrosilicon, are the preferred media today. In the U. S. alone, heavy-media iron ore plants with a capacity of over 10 million tons of concentrate per year are in existence. Heavy-media separation involving use of solid, inorganic particles suspended in water rapidly found a wide range of commercial use with the introduction of magnetic media. The minerals engineer is experienced in working with suspensions and quickly learned to develop and control such media at a cost compatible to the type of separation desired. The natural superiority of a heavy liquid with uniform chemical and physical properties has never been questioned since its first use in laboratory mineral separatory procedures. It offers the only method for gravity separation of fine particles of relatively close specific gravity. The most important early attempt to make heavy liquid separations commercial were made by the DuPont Co. which began experimental work on Virginia limonite in 1904. The appended "Partial Summary of Patents" compiled by W.L. O'Connell of The Dow Chemical Co. demonstrates the quantity and sequence of this work. Both inorganic and organic parting liquids were investigated and numerous patents were issued on the use and recovery of these liquids. The work culminated in the heavy liquid plant of the Weston Coal Co. at Shenandoah, Pa. Chemical engineering design of this plant was the responsibility of Francis I. and Hubert I. DuPont. Heavy-liquid separation of coal almost achieved commercial status at this plant which actually processed over 20,000 tons of coal. The liquids used were tetrabromethane, pentachloroethane and trichlo-roethylene, with liquid losses ranging from 8.9 to 12.4 oz per ton of cleaned coal. The reasons for failure of this plant are not clear but probably involved toxicity problems as well as other problems in chemical engineering. Excellent economics were reported. A more recent pilot plant was built in 1954-55 by Norris Goodwin for the Inerto Co. to treat hectorite clay. This plant employed carbon tetrachloride in jigs with liquid recovery by evaporation. Although good separation was achieved, incomplete removal of the CCl, from the clay prevented commercial operation. The only present operations known to the authors employing heavy liquids for gravity separations are limited to the use of calcium chloride in certain coal washers and bromochloromethane in a small batch operation (one ton solids per day) for the separation of beryllium metal particles from slag materials. This is not strictly a minerals beneficiation problem but it has demonstrated the feasibility of such separations.
