"The objective of this study was to gain a better insight into the kinetics of chalcocite leaching in an acidic ferric sulfate media. Chalcocite leaching in acidic media is known to occur in two sequential stages, with the first stage being much faster than the second. The leaching residue from the first stage is typically assumed to be a covellite type of material. This study hypothesized that the mineralogy after the first-stage leaching varies in response to different leaching conditions. We investigated the dependency of the mineralogy of the first-stage leaching residue on temperature and initial ferric concentration. The experimental results showed that chalcocite leaching behavior altered upon temperature and initial ferric concentration. A proposed combined reaction model was found to be able to describe the experimental data. The first stage was described very well by the shrinking core diffusion model while the second stage was described very well by the shrinking core chemical reaction model. This finding has important implications for mine operations to manipulate leaching conditions to create the desirable leaching kinetics.INTRODUCTION The kinetics of chalcocite leaching in sulfate media has been extensively studied (Cheng & Lawson, 1991; Fisher, 1994; Fisher, Flores, & Henderson, 1992; Niu, Ruan, Tan, Jia, & Sun, 2015). "In the last thirty years, the study of earthquake mechanisms has emphasized the major role of rock friction. Earthquakes appear to be the result of a frictional instability and occur by sudden slippage along a pre-existing fault or a plate interface. Multiphysics couplings play a major role in earthquake nucleation and seismic slip. The effect of shear heating and thermal pressurization may be of prime importance in the control of the stability of shear deformation inside the slipping zone. Other mechanisms in relation with thermal decomposition of minerals affect the pore pressure and the temperature evolution of the system, and can play a significant role in the extreme strain localization observed in field. The actual width of the localized zone is a key parameter for understanding fault weakening mechanisms. On the basis of field observations, laboratory experiments and recent advanced modeling, these phenomena are analyzed and discussed in order to bring some new insights in the understanding of earthquakes nucleation.INTRODUCTIONIn the last thirty years, the study of earthquake mechanisms has emphasized the major role of rock friction. The conceptual model of spring slider system is commonly used to represent the interaction between an elastic crustal block and a fault zone. Stick-slip instability is possible if the softening rate of the shear resistance of the fault zone is high enough as compared to the stiffness of the crustal block. Therefore, weakening mechanisms that can explain how the frictional resistance of a fault decreases with slip and/or slip rate is of prime importance to understand how an earthquake nucleates. In recent years, several drilling programs in active faults (e.g. the Nojima fault in Japan, Boullier, 2011; the Aigion Fault in Greece, Cornet et al. 2004, the Chelungpu fault in Taiwan, Ma et al. 2006, and the San Andreas fault in the U.S.A. Ellsworth et al. 2000) as well as high velocity friction experiments (e.g. Tanikawa et al 2012a; Tanikawa et al. 2012b) have highlighted the physico-chemical processes involved in the nucleation of seismic slip (see for the example the review paper of Niemeijer et al. 2012)."

Columnar jointed basalt is a fractured rock, with a lot of small spacing structural planes and poor integrity of the rock mass. On the basis of the comprehensive study of the columnar shape of Columnar joints, rugosity of the fracture surface and the chemical composition of basalt, columnar joints of Bai hetan dam area were formed as a result of the cooling and shrinkage effect of magma. Columnar joints basalt are mainly chlorite, kaolinite, epidote, tremolite chemical reactions and the content of columnar joints are mainly chlorite by slice identification and chemical analysis. Columnar joints basalt showed high uniaxial tension test, low coefficient of friction and high cohesion by indoor physical and mechanical test. Columnar joints rock mass showed high strength and large deformation by field shear test and deformation test. Columnar joints basalt can be used directly as a foundation of dam as long as we follow the rules and reduce disturbance strictly.

"Difficulties in the flotation of Inca's ultramafic ores at the Thompson Mill are related to the presence of serpentine slimes and some floatable rock minerals. Serpentine slime coatings depress pentlandite recovery while rock flotation decreases concentrate grade. Carboxy methyl cellulose (CMG) has been shown to promote sulphide flotation and to reject floatable rock.To improve ultramafic ore flotation, CMC addition in the rougher stage was studied in a laboratory scale column. Batch tests were conducted in the lab and followed up with continuous testwork at the Thompson mill. At 0.5-1.0 g CMG per kg ore, pentlandite recovery is increased by 5-10% in rougher flotation, pentlandite/rock selectivity is improved and pentlandite/pyrrhotite selectivity is unaffected.IntroductionAt Inca's Manitoba Division, two distinctly different sulphide ores are processed at the Thompson Mill, primarily by froth flotation. The sulfide ores are contained within the Thompson Nickel Belt and currently there are two operating mines, Thompson and Birchtree. Sulphide mineralization in both mines is simple, consisting of pyrrhotite (both monoclinic and hexagonal), pentlandite, and minor chalcopyrite. Both deposits are hosted by metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks with variable ultramafic rock associations. Ultramafic rocks are mostly serpentinites: magnesium rich rocks composed predominately of serpentine. There is little serpentinite at the Thompson mine, while mineralization at Birchtree is closely associated with significant ultramafic rocks.Excellent recoveries of pentlandite (Pn) and chalcopyrite (Cp) are achieved at the Thompson Mill when processing ore from the Thompson mine. In treating the ultramafic associated Birchtree ore, nickel recoveries are some 6 to 8% below that achieved with Thompson ore. Furthermore, a typical concentrate from Birchtree ore contains more rock and is higher in MgO content. The presence of rock in the concentrate is related to free floatable rock species as well as rock locked with sulfides. The reason for the difference in flotation responses of these two ores has been the subject of on-going re-search."

Cold gas dynamic spray is an innovative technology allowing the deposition of thin metallic layers on a bulk or sheet substrate. Titanium on aluminum deposition is very attractive to the aeronautic industry, due to the enhanced corrosion resistance and wear properties of titanium coating as well as its improved compatibility with CFRP, preserving the reduced cost of aluminum substrate. One main drawback, however, is related to the micro-porosity of the deposed layer, negatively affecting the corrosion barrier performance. In this paper, the effect of selective laser post-treatment on pure grade 2 titanium coatings on AA2020-T3 sheets was experimentally and numerically investigated. Morphological features, microstructure and chemical composition of the treated zone were assessed by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Microhardness measurements were also carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the treated coating. A numerical model of the laser treatment, based on a finite volume scheme, was implemented and solved to simulate the process and discuss the experimental outcomes. Obtained results highlighted the key role played by heat input and dimensional features on the effectiveness of the treatment.

"IntroductionTrout Lake Mine is located about 5 km north of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited complex at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The mine was brought into production in 1982at the onset of a severe recession in the base metal market. The mine is operated as a joint venture with HBM&S, MMR and SMS.During the first several months of operation it became evident that there were opportunities to reduce costs at the mine significantly, and a productivity improvement subcommittee was formed to make recommendations. The first committee met in January, 1983 and consisted of the mine manager from Hudson Bay Mining, a geological expert and a maintenance expert from Outokumpu Oy, Finland, and a mine manager from Granges, Sweden.Recommendations from this committee were implemented during 1983 and a new subcommittee was constituted in 1984 to continue the work begun the previous year. The committee remains as constituted in 1984 and meets quarterly.The committee consists of M.A . Kirby , manager - Flin Flon Mines, HBM&S; Gustav Hoberstorfer of Mindelco , a Swedish mining consultant retained by Granges; Eero Laatio, mine superintendent of Keretti Mine at Outokumpu Oy in Finland; and Bob Bray, a mining consultant retained by Manitoba Mineral Resources.Many productivity improvements made in the operation are attributed to the work of this committee and other experts retained at various times throughout the mine life."

In this paper, we attempt to answer an often asked question, how can metal mining be compatible with the principles of sustainable development. Starting with the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," we make the case that mining is or should be sustainable, using examples of sustainable practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S primary copper producer. These examples cover the entire mining cycle starting with exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, closure and post-closure and post-mining land use. It is hoped that the presentation will challenge the mining industry to even greater innovation as future mineral development projects are planned.

"Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. (HBM&S) started up a zinc plant and smelter in late 1930, employing technology of that period. The zinc plant has since converted from a roast/leach operation to a two stage pressure leach operation to eliminate sulphur dioxide emissioms. The smelter, however, is still continuing with much of the original roaster/reverberatory furnace technology. This paper reviews the process flow of the copper smelter, with some comments on past and recent changes.Smelter FlowsheetPrior to July 1993, the HBM&S smelter operation consisted of seven areas, namely feed preparation, roasters, reverberatory furnace, converters, anode casting, fuming plant, and dust collection. A simplified smelter flowsheet is shown in Figure 1. The data for tonnage of materials moving through the circuit are presented in Tables I to 4, and are representative of the time period from July 1992 to June 1993. A change in the zinc plant technology in 1993 resulted in the elimination of a zinc-bearing sulphide leach residue from the smelter feed blend, thereby greatly reducing the zinc content of slag produced in the smelter. Consequently the fuming plant and ancillary equipment, such as the drying plant, were shut down. These areas will, however, be described. With the closure of the zinc fuming furnaces all the slag from the reverberatory furnace is now discarded to stockpile.The over-all smelter metal recoveries are 96% for Cu and rn.5010 for Au and Ag. Figures 2 and 4 indicate historical production numbers of copper, silver and gold, respectively. A review of the minor element distribution in the smelter can be found elsewhere."

This paper provides an overview of recent applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to combustion related fugitive emissions problems. The aim is to illustrate the capabilities and discuss the present limitations in this field. Examples include design of retrofitted NOx reduction technology in a kiln and in a boiler, and the prediction of pollutants such as SO2 and metallurgical dust emanating from a copper flash smelting furnace. It is demonstrated that CFD is an effective tool for reducing technical risk in design, for identifying the root-cause problems and testing solutions, and for concurrently assessing emissions reduction and process impact. In addition, the value of CFD for demonstrating due diligence for regulatory compliance is discussed.

Alkaline sulfide leaching technology (i.e. ASL) has been studied, presented and published throughout the literature and utilized in some current engineering studies. Yet, the actual industrial applications are very few and the knowledge about these is very limited. Hence, a large gap between the laboratory, publications, engineering studies, and the actual industrial plant exists. Recent studies of ASL applied to copper enargite concentrates definitively bear out this dichotomy. Hence, this paper will seek to dispel the common misperceptions that continue to surround the selective industrial ASL hydrometallurgical technology. For edification of the reader, a listing of ten common misconceptions and myths is listed. As well, ASL history, fundamental aspects and a new flowsheet application for simultaneous gold and high purity antimony oxide production from low grade materials is included. The associated estimated economic considerations are also included to heighten enlightenment about the application of this industrially proven technology.

The precipitation of Al2Cu particles in a 319 T7 aluminum alloy has been modeled. A theoretical approach enables the concomitant computation of nucleation, growth and coarsening, based on an implicit scheme using the finite differences. The equation of continuity is discretized in time and space in order to obtain a matricial form. The inversion of a tridiagonal matrix allows us to determine the evolution of the size distribution of Al2Cu particles at t + dt. The fluxes of solute in-between the boundaries, as well as the ones at the boundaries, are computed in order to respect the conservation of the mass of the system. The main results of the model are compared to TEM measurements. Simulations provide quantitative features on the impact of the cooling rate on the size distribution of Al2Cu particles in good agreement with the TEM measurements. This metallurgical model is integrated into FEA software in order to perform mechanical computations. This kind of multiscale approach allows new perspectives to be investigated in the process of designing cylinder heads. It enables a more precise prediction of the microstructure, its evolution as a function of continuous cooling rates and its impact on the integrity of the structure.

ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GrG) test procedure at McGill university is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill university has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GrG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill university. as a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GrG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GrG tests were carried out at McGill universityon ores from all over the world. recently, a modi?ed version of the GrG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GrG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has theadvantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. to recognize and honour the contributions madeby the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GrG test be named after Laplante.

Evaluation of three dimensionally non-uniform strain distribution in rocks under various conditions such as in water or under freeze-thaw cycles is of significant importance to understand their complex deformations and fracturing mechanisms. For this purpose, we developed an image analysis method which can evaluate or “measure” the three dimensional (3-D) strain distribution in rocks. The proposed method utilizes the 3-D images of rock under initial and deformed configurations, which are obtained by some imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography (X-rayCT). In the proposed method, the obtained 3-D images are divided into multiple sub-regions of interest. For each sub-region, the strain is evaluated utilizing 3-D affine transform with unknown coefficients to be determined. In the first step, 3-D voxel level displacements at multiple representative points in each sub-region are computed by 3- D digital volume correlation technique between the comparison images and the initial-guess of the transform coefficients are obtained. In the second step, referring to the initial-guess of unknown transform coefficient, they were optimized in sub-voxel level by finding optimum digital volume correlation between the comparison images, which can evaluate the transform coefficients with higher precision. From the calculated transform coefficients, the strain was directly obtained through the spatial derivative of displacement based on affine transform. In this paper, along with the description of the proposed method, the evaluation of deformation in a lignite specimen due to immersion in water was presented as an application example. As the 3-D imaging technique, micro-focus X-rayCT was applied. The result showed that the induced dilatational strain field due to the initiation and extension of cracks in the specimen was clearly captured. Therefore, authors believe that the proposed method can be applicable to various problems in rock mechanics.

"This paper presents the results of structural analyses and full-scale destructive tests conducted on liner plate culverts. The purpose of this work was to establish a design method and evaluate the suitability of using these structures in potential roof-fall areas for a rehabilitation application in lower stress and relaxed mining environments. Field evaluation of the design is currently in progress.Theoretical ultimate resistance functions were established for two different culvert shapes and were found to be representative of their experimental behaviour. The ultimate resistance function was used to determine their plastic behaviour to a rapidly increasing deflection condition, to determine the energy absorption capacity of these structures, and to predict their response to impact loading.IntroductionThe Kidd Creek mine of Falconbridge Limited is located justnorth of Timmins, Ontario. The area under rehabilitation for which this program was developed is the 2600 level of the No. I mine. The problem of effectively securing selected drifts at the 2600 level in NO.1 mine, for access to a high-grade ore block, is key to the economics of the operation. Diamond drill test holes had indicated a loosened rock mass above the 2600 level of about 7.5 m thick in response to the extensive mining operation below this level. This level forms the arbitrary boundary between the No. I and No. 2 mines, and has extensive volumes of cemented rock fill below it and largely untouched ore above it to the 2000 level in the North orebody. The walls at that level were showing relaxed ground conditions typical of de-stress: sub-horizontal joints opening up, and peeling.Due to the ground conditions, the consequent safety risks, the high grade of the ore, the potential production delays, and the likelihood of several phases of rehabilitation, regularly used drift rehabilitation employing rock bolts, cable bolting, or shotcrete was not practical. Two options were deemed possible alternatives to suit these conditions, steel sets with blocking and lagging, and liner plate culverts with backfill. Culverts were chosen."

"IntroductionTHE SMALLER industrial and commercial steam generating plants in the United States are suffering from an ‘engineering deficiency' which, if allowed to continue, will probably result in the extinction of the species• that now burn •approximately 75 million tons of coal. We will classify as 'small' those plants which should require not more than one operating man per shift, including those in which as little .as thirty minutes per day should be adequate for .all service attention. These are the small steam plants that need the most, and get the least, expert attention for fuel :planning, equipment selection, design layout, .and proper operating technique. Dissatisfaction with bituminous coal is usually caused by one or more preventable weaknesses such as excessive or burdensome labour •for firing, .coal or ash handling and manual operation, smoke and fly ash emission above nuisance levels:, high maintenance and premium coal application for acceptable operation, and .finally, overall steam costs which are not .competitive. These 'deficiencies', so .common in the small coal-fired steam plants, can be readily eliminated by competent engineering and modern equipment with automatic controls."

The leaching of gold with thiosulfate solutions in the absence of ammonia and copper ions was investigated using electrochemical and kinetic methods. In sodium thiosulfate solutions, the electrochemical oxidation of gold was hindered and the leaching rate using pure oxygen as the oxidant was very slow. It was found that the addition of a small amount of thiourea or formamidine disulfide to the thiosulfate solution greatly enhanced the oxidation of gold. However, the enhancement to the overall dissolution of gold using dissolved oxygen as the oxidant was limited. This was attributed to the fact that the oxygen reduction process was unaffected by the additives and remained slow, which limited further improvement to the overall kinetics. An alternative oxidant, the ferric EDTA complex having a reduction potential of approximately 0.12 V, was found to be promising. The cathodic reduction of ferric EDTA was fast and reversible at neutral pH. While the ferric EDTA complex was effective in oxidizing gold, it did not appear to significantly oxidize thiosulfate. A thiosulfate solution containing thiourea and ferric EDTA has been shown to quickly dissolve gold in the form of a powder as well as from gold ores. In the leaching with the ores high gold recoveries of above 90% was achieved with the best performance obtained in neutral solutions (pH 6-7).

"Water-cooled ducts represent an integral part of high temperature off-gas systems in metallurgical processes. Typically, off-gas enters these ducts at significantly elevated temperatures; therefore, water cooling may be required to maintain the duct skin temperature within allowable design limits. These off-gases are typically of high mineral content that could lead to dust buildup, and there is a possibility of slag buildup / molten metal splashing. Therefore, dust cleaning provisions may be necessary in order to remove or minimize accretion on the duct wall, which could otherwise impact the water cooling and the system process efficiency. These ducts may have complex geometry and experience a wide range of loading, including gravity loads, water and gas pressures, cyclic thermal loading and dynamic impact forces. Consequently, the thermo-mechanical assessment of such water-cooled ducts is critical and requires consideration phenomena such as high temperature gradients, potential nucleate boiling, thermal ratcheting and fatigue failures. Such assessment is not comprehensively covered by design-by-rule design codes and guidelines due to its complexity. This paper presents a successful implementation example of design-by-analysis methodology to improve the design and extend the life of a water-cooled furnace transition duct using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).INTRODUCTION Water-cooling represents an important part of high temperature off-gas systems in metallurgical processes. Typical temperatures of the off-gas in the furnace uptake are in excess of 1400°C, and thus there is a need to maintain the water-cooled duct and jacket skin temperatures within their material allowable design limits. Water-cooled channels have been used effectively in arc furnace roof design (Sosonkin et al., 1972; Smolyarenko and Khainson, 1988) and other furnaces as well as in furnace fuming jackets (Scholey et al., 1994). The design of these systems was based on one-dimensional analysis to ensure sufficient cooling is available under extreme furnace conditions (Smolyarenko and Khainson, 1988; Scholey et al., 1994). With advancement in furnace and fuming system designs, water-cooled duct designs have become more complicated in geometry. Numerical techniques, such as three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer modeling, are therefore needed to more accurately calculate water velocity, temperature and convective heat transfer coefficients in the water-cooled channels (Haywood et al., 2002; Henning et al., 2010). This is of particular importance around geometric corners where stagnant water flow may lead to local nucleate boiling at the critical heat flux, causing hot spots (Bergman et al., 2011). High wall skin temperatures increase the risk of failures due to thermal stresses as well as increasing corrosion rates (Gelfi et al., 2012), leading to costly equipment downtime and potential safety risks."

At True Hill in southwestern New Brunswick, low-grade porphyry-style Bi-8n-Mo greisen mineralization is associated with the cupola of an epizonal granite porphyry (granite) that also exhibits three episodes of brecciation. The first episode of brecciation is an in situ, 8 m to 10 m wide transitional zone of net-veined to coarse-grained "blocky" endogranitic mesobreccia that is chloritized and greisenized and hosts weak disseminated minerali.zation. In a zone closer to the host rockgranite contact, angular fine- to coarse-grained endogranitic mesobreccia with greisenized matrix is superimposed on the earlier transitional breccia. The latest episode is fault-controlled and consists of quartz- and chalcedony-hosted sub-angular to rounded fine-grained "pebble" mesobreccias that crosscut and brecciate the other breccia types, as well as the adjacent altered metasedimentary country rocks. The first two episodes of brecciation are magmatic-hydrothermal in origin related to hydrofracturing of the granite carapace and are accompanied by greisenization and mineralization, whereas the post-mineralization, silica-hosted, "pebble" mesobreccias related to hydromagmatic, low-temperature fluid circulation and/or boiling along faults near the contact. These magrnatichydrothermal and hydromagrnatic mesobreccias are similar to those associated with W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen mineralization at the Mount Pleasant deposit.

The latter part of the 20th century saw great advances in the treatment of refractory gold ores coupled with increased reliance on the use of cyanide for gold processing. Now, in many parts of the world, there is social pressure to limit or eliminate the use of cyanide. As well, treatment of some refractory ores or concentrates which have excessive cyanide consumption, gold cyanide pregrobbing or significant sulfide content remain difficult. This paper will outline the history of the development of alkaline sulfide leaching as an ancillary process to nitrogen species catalyzed (NSC) pressure leaching. Electrochemical fundamentals and the applicable thermodynamics of the alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgical system will be outlined. As well, examples of refractory gold recovery with alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgy such as an arsenopyrite gold concentrate application, a chalcopyrite gold concentrate application, a pregrobbing gold ore application, and a cyanide consuming gold ore application will be delineated in this paper.

"The application of pneumatically-assisted fluidized bed flotation, specifically the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology, has found widespread use in non-sulphide processing (particularly phosphate, potash and coal) for the recovery of coarse particles. In gold processing, centrifugal gravity circuits and flash flotation cells are typically employed for the recovery of coarse and near-size liberated gold which tends to accumulate in recycled grinding streams due to bypass to the classifying cyclone underflow streams owing to the higher specific gravity of these gold particles. Early removal of this gold from the grinding circuits contributes toward the reduction of downstream processing losses as a result of overgrinding and particle shape deformation in the case of flotation processing, longer leach residence times in the case of extractive processing, and surface occlusions in the case of both flotation and extractive processing. Furthermore, recovery to bullion attracts higher payment terms by way of comparison to concentrate sales in the case of copper-gold concentrators. This paper assesses the application of pneumatically assisted fluidized bed flotation for the recovery of coarse liberated gold through the analysis of piloting data generated from the operation of a continuously operated 16 inch ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit treating a sized coarse grinding circuit stream. The paper presents the stage recovery by size performance of the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit together with quantitative gold deportment analysis to demonstrate the efficiency with which gold was recovered during this pilot campaign and then compared to more conventional processing units – centrifugal gravity and conventional flotation.INTRODUCTION Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) has identified that an opportunity exists for improving the recovery of coarse composite particles at its current operations, both as a means for improving overall recovery and as an opportunity for early gangue rejection. As such, Newcrest Mining Limited has taken an interest in the application of pneumatically-assisted, fluidized-bed flotation i.e. ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology. This interest dates back to 2011 with sighter testwork carried out on their Australian-held ore bodies (Kohmuench et al, 2013).
