"During the fall of 1993, a new Pill-based control strategy was installed in the B grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. The control strategy was first evaluated on a grinding circuit dynamic simulator (DYNAFRAG), which permitted the discrimination between more than a dozen possible control alternatives. Once the final choice was made the necessary instruments were purchased and installed. The control strategy was configured on the plant computer and is planned to be commissioned shortly.This paper summarizes the control strategy, the design procedure, the installation and the controller tuning. Some preliminary problems posed by the process prior to implementation are also presented.IntroductionIn 1990 the GRAIIM (french acronym for Research Group on Computer Applications to the Mineral Industry) of Laval University started a research project on Knowledge Based Automatic Control (KBAC). This project is sponsored by a consortium of eight mining companies under the umbrella ofMI1EC (Mining Technology Council of Canada), the Quebec Mining Association (AMQ), CANMET and the Centre de Recherches minerales (CRM). The project also benefits from important grants from the Ministere de l'Education Superieure et de la Science and the NSREC-CRD program.The main objective of this project is the screening of advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc.) and automatic control (model-based control) for their use in the mineral processing operations. The project also aims at transferring these tools to the industrial partners through annual workshops for plant engineers, annual symposia, and through specific in-plant projects where the participation of plant engineers is strongly encouraged.The main objective of this project is the screening of advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc.) and automatic control (model-based control) for their use in the mineral processing operations. "Sometime around 3000 B.C., primitive metallurgists working in the mountainous regions of Asia Minor bordering on the Black Sea (Pontus) produced a soft, easily fused metal today known as lead. It appears certain that the first metal was made by reductive smelting of galena, but whether this recovery arose by the accidental inclusion of galena in the stones of a fire hearth or whether it occurred as a consequence of simple pyrometallurgical experiments on a series of interesting ""stones"" will likely never be known with certainty. The properties of galena, high metallic lustre, great density and facile cleavage, must have excited the ancients, and such ""stones"" would have been the object of primitive testing111 - Shortly after the discovery of lead, the ancients found that the controlled oxidation of this metal at elevated temperatures yielded smaller amounts of a more interesting material, silver. Again, it is uncertain if the production of silver by primitive cupellation techniques was the result of a fireside accident or the consequence of a deliberate experiment, but the important fact is that silver was produced shortly after the discovery of lead. The techniques for making lead and silver spread gradually throughout the entire civilized world, likely as a result of both technology diffusion and independent rediscovery. The physical properties of lead could not have been overly attractive to the ancients, but silver was a different matter altogether. The gleaming white lustre and relative immunity to oxidation quickly assigned silver to the precious materials category, a status it still enjoys. In early times, argentiferous galena was inevitably processed only for its silver values; lead was generally an unwanted byproduct and was frequently discarded as litharge (PbO) during the cupellation process. The silver was eagerly sought, however, and resulted in considerable mining activity culminating in the famous Athenian silver mines at Laurium at the southern end of the Athenian peninsula."

"A standard triaxial apparatus was set up to perform sliding tests. Slide-hold-slide (SHS) tests, with hold times from 10 to 3000s and at invariant effective confining pressures of 1MPa, incremented to 3MPa and then 5MPa, were conducted on both dry and wet split limestone samples to study the evolution of fracture friction under holding and sliding processes. Limestone fracture shows time-dependent behaviors in SHS tests, friction drops (creep) gradually during hold periods, and recovers (healing) after re-slide. Frictional healing and creep increment are proportional with hold times, while are inversely proportional with effective confining pressures. Moreover, the wet sample displays heavier healing than the dry one, whereas creep increment of the wet sample is lighter than the dry one. We conclude that the evolution of limestone fracture friction is significantly controlled by mechanisms of fluid-rock interactions.INTRODUCTIONThe evolution of the mechanical properties of fractures and faults exerts a critical influence on the behavior of fault zones and on the earthquake cycle. In addition to natural processes, this behavior has broad implications in induced seismicity and influences oil and gas production, the sequestration of carbon dioxide and the disposal of nuclear wastes.Fault friction is typically measured by slide-hold-slide experiments, where fault gouge is deformed at low velocities (<0.1 mms-1) and over small shear offsets (<30 mm) (Dieterich, 1979, 1981; Mair et al., 1999; Marone, 1998, 2004) or alternatively with rotary-shear devices, that enable higher slip velocities over very large shear offsets (Hirose & Shimamoto, 2005; Mizoguchi et al., 2006). Typical experiments (Dieterich, 1972; Marone, 1998; Olsen et al., 1998; Bos & Spiers, 2002; Tenthorey et al., 2003) show significant creep during the holding period and frictional healing (strength gain) upon reloading. Fault creep and healing are often time-dependent with longer hold times typically resulting in greater magnitudes of creep and in strength gains (Tenthorey et al., 2003; Yasuhara et al., 2005; Carpenter et al., 2012). Frictional healing may arise from growth of grain contacts (potentially induced by pressure solution) (Rabinowicz, 1951; Dieterich & Kilgore, 1994; Yasuhara et al., 2005), strengthening of the contacts (correlates with cementation) (Hickman & Evans, 1992; Beeler et al., 1994; Karner et al., 1997; Olsen et al., 1998; Muhuri et al., 2003; Tenthorey et al., 2003; Li et al., 2011) or via other changes in state including changes in porosity and rearrangement of force chains. Experimental evidence (Dieterich, 1979, 1981; Johnson, 1981; Marone & Scholz, 1988; Marone, 1998; Saffer & Marone, 2003; Moore & Lockner, 2007; Ikari et al., 2007; Ikari et al., 2011; Carpenter et al., 2012) quantifies both the mode and magnitude of second-order changes in the velocity-dependent (including velocity- strengthening and weakening) evolution of frictional strength."

The effect of porosity on mechanical behavior of rock has been studied in the past using both experimental and numerical techniques. One important aspect of this study that has not received much attention is the role of void size and distribution on the mechanical behavior of rock. In this study, the CA2 computer program that is a hybrid discrete-finite element program for two-dimensional simulation of geomaterials is used. Numerical specimens with different macro-void sizes are loaded uniaxially. The Young?s modulus, Poisson?s ratio, uniaxial strength and crack initiation stress are studied. The numerical results are compared with the database of experimental tests on Plaster of Paris specimens containing Styrofoam spheres with different void sizes and porosities. It is shown that the macro void spatial distribution is partly responsible for the scatter of the experimental data. It is also shown that not-only the porosity but also the pore size can affect the deformability, crack initiation stress and rock strength.

THE cyanide plant of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company, Limited, at Wells, B.C:, in the Barkerville section of the Cariboo mining division, was erected during the latter part of 1932 and placed in operation in January, 1933. The initial capacity of the plant was about 50 tons daily. This was increased to 100 tons at the end of 1934 and stepped-up to 150 tons in September, 1935. It is expected that further plant extensions, for milling a total of 200 tons daily, will be required during the early part of 1936. Recent additions to the mill have been so planned as to permit ready expansion to 275 tons daily when underground development warrants the milling of this tonnage. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly the steps taken to bring the plant to its present capacity and to comment on possibilities for further plant expansion. The gold in Cariboo Gold Quartz ore occurs as free gold in the quartz and on pyrite surfaces. Some of it is very finely divided, specks l/10,000 inch having been observed microscopically, according to Dr. G. Hanson. In addition to pyrite, which comprises probably 15 to 20 per cent of the mill feed, galena and sphalerite are present, with small amounts of arseno-pyrite and chalcopyrite. Sulphobismuthites-chiviatite, galenobismutite, cosalite, etc.-occur more or less frequently in certain sections of the mine. Following tests on Cariboo ore by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, at Ottawa, treatment of the ore by straigh t cyanidation was recommended and a 50-ton plant employing continuous counter-current decantation was erected. This plant was built as a pilot mill, the intention being to erect a larger mill after metallurgical treatment had proved successful over an extended period. This original installation, however, has been enlarged and retained as an operating unit, additional equipment being added to it as capacity increases have been required.

"The inlet air velocity profile of any surface mine ventilation fan is an important factor when designing the connecting ductwork from the mine shaft collar to the fan. Deficient fan performance can be the result of ductwork that adds unnecessary pressure loss and/or adversely influences the fan inlet air conditions (velocity profile). The need for optimized inlet air conditions begins with discussing the process of performance testing during the development of the fan performance curve. Additional discussions include design of the shaft collar connection and the connecting ductwork. A preferred design of ductwork for parallel fan installations will be illustrated.INTRODUCTIONThe inlet air velocity profile of any surface installed mine ventilation fan is one of the most important factors to consider when designing the connecting ductwork from the mine shaft collar to the fan. Illustrations of cost savings and pressure losses will be included for audience consideration. The design of ductwork for parallel fan installations on the surface is another issue that requires consideration. A preferred method will be illustrated.The selection of accessory components, such as self-closing doors, can also add to the potential for reduced fan performance. Several components will be discussed.An elementary presentation of the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) Standard 201 “Fans and Systems” will be included to provide background for those audience members that want additional technical explanations of the need for a uniform inlet air velocity profile at the fan inlet."

Risks to aquatic receiving environments from uranium mining and milling fall into three categories: physical (habitat change), chemical (e.g., uranium, selenium, total dissolved solids [TDS], metals including vanadium), and radiological. Although all categories of risk need to be managed, chemical risks are the most significant and are typically chronic rather than acute. For instance, selenium toxicity is primarily manifested as reproductive impairment due to maternal transfer, resulting in embryotoxicity and teratogenicity in egg-laying vertebrates. Risk is best assessed using a weight of evidence approach focused on ecosystem services. Risk management should be based on both risk assessment and adaptive monitoring.

The rock mechanics literature has documented the challenges, failures and successes of tunneling through weak rocks. Cases usually deal with low RMR rock masses or high stresses in a fractured zone. With the combination of 5MPa water pressure, 14 RMR ground with clay infillings and ground freeze walls, the case of the 510-8225N development drift at McArthur River is certainly much more challenging, especially when high grade uranium production is at stake. The article explains the excavation and the ground control techniques that were used to overcome the challenges of development at the Unconformity in the Athabasca Basin.

"NOT TOO LONG AGO, the CIM Education Committee saw the need for an information campaign to promote interest in mineral industry careers among young people. Today, times have changed and the Committee has now placed emphasis on the definition and function of the mining engineer. This situation, we believe, is entirely normal and the change of emphasis is not due to a change in the needs of the industry but more to a diversification of these needs. In years past, the Canadian mineral industry, although a very important part of our economy, was looked upon as a specialized craft and, because of the richness of our resources, did not suffer too much from competition. Now, times have changed and we are increasingly at the mercy of the competition and damaging inroads of price fluctuations, etc. We will therefore answer the questions raised in this discussion in the light of the role played in the past and the role to be played in the future by the Canadian mining engineer. We will begin with the following premises : (a) If mining engineers are to be involved in the massive problems of society, their traditional background is not sufficient. (b) Councils for professional development are working on criteria for the accreditation of advanced degree programs in the United States as well as in Canada, and, simultaneously, three-year technology programs are being developed along with professional engineering degree programs. (c) The difference between European and American industries regarding philosophy of life is that in Europe they appreciate wisdom more than HPs while in America the HP seems to be more important. The Engineering Digest of February 1972 reported that in the United States, during June and July of 1971, the second highest rate of unemployment was for the 55 to 64 age group ( 4.1 per cent). "This paper discusses the primary collector adsorption onto a sulphide mineral in mixed collector systems to understand its adsorption mechanism. UV-vis measurements were performed to identify the primary collector concentration adsorbed on pyrite, and the adsorption kinetics under different conditions were compared to distinguish their difference between single and mixed collector systems. Small amount of secondary collector addition prior to the primary collector addition significantly improved the adsorption kinetics of primary one. The result was explained by the combination of two previously proposed mechanisms (i.e., different adsorption site mechanism and multi-layer product mechanism). This study showed UV-vis measurement as an effective tool to study mixed collector adsorption behaviour.INTRODUCTIONCollectors are surfactants composed of heteropolar molecules with a non-polar and a polar group (Lotter & Bradshaw, 2010). In a froth flotation process, the function of collector is to improve the hydrophobicity of target minerals and selectively float them with the aid of gas bubbles. Because of the chemical or physical attraction between the polar group and the mineral surfaces sites, collector molecules adsorb on the particle surface with the non-polar group assigned towards the bulk solution (i.e., water), thus the mineral particle surface becomes hydrophobic (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006).Thiol collectors are major collectors widely used in sulphide mineral flotation. Potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), dithiocarbamate (DTC), dithiophosphate (DTP), mecaptobenzothiazole (MBT) are some common thiol collectors. Previous studies reported that some mixed collectors systems enhanced the flotation performance (e.g., Bradshaw, 1997; Bradshaw et al., 1998; Rao & Forssberg, 1997). Thiol collector mixtures are often used in the flotation of sulphide ores, and discussed with the synergistic benefits (Bradshaw et al., 1998) which include lowering the total collector dosage requirements, improving the sulphide recovery and the rate of flotation as well as the improving the froth characteristics. The current paper mainly considered the mixture between two thiol collectors (PAX and DTC, considered as a weaker and selective collector, and stronger and less selective collector, respectively (Bradshaw, 1997)) to further understand their adsorption mechanism that should assist in improving the flotation performance of refractory gold ore."

"The process of arriving at the size and grade of· (a) a newly discovered body of mineralization, (b) a potential ore resource, (c) an orebody proposed for mining, or (d) the ore reserves in a mine, requires fundamental geological, and geometrical determinations as well as physical and chemical analyses. This paper outlines geological and geometrical features considered critical, in the authors&apos; experience, in realistic reserve determination. These are discussed under the headings ""The Four Cs"". They include the Character, type or nature of the mineralization; the Continuity of various types of mineralization in the deposit; various key concerns in the Calculation besides the mathematics; and the Classification section which refers to basic considerations in classifying a mineral estimate. It is suggested that the responsibility for the calculation of a Resource or Reserve should be that of a geologist experienced in the ore type under review. Further, it should be the responsibility of the board of directors of the company owning the deposit to ensure that a sufficiently experienced person is chosen to carry out the process. IntroductionThe key issue of ore reserves is that they are intended as, a clear-as- possible statement of metal in place in a mineable orebody. Precise, widely understood definitions help convey understanding of the figures, but accuracy requires careful geological input before the calculation is made and a definition is applied. Many recent new mining operations in Canada have experienced serious shortcomings between original ore reserve figures and what was mined. This suggests deficiencies in the actual tonnage and grade calculated in advance of production. The authors suspect that much of the problem is due to a less-than-adequate outline of the orebody before calculating reserves for production or alternatively, treatment of grade and thickness data without regard to an orebody outline. Careful consideration of mineralization and ore continuity is one of the most important aspects of ore geology. Ore reserve calculation should be more than a mathematical exercise."

"Camlaren Mines, Limited, owns a group of claims near Gordon lake, in the Northwest Territories about 45 miles northeast of Yellowknife. The Hump vein on the property was explored continuously from the summer of 1937 to December, 1938, when all work was stopped. The two-compartment vertical shaft sunk near the vein is 380 feet deep and drifts and cross-cuts on the 200- and 350-foot levels total 2,241 feet . This exploration indicated 13,177 tons of ore with a gold content of between ½ and 1 ounce a ton1GEOLOGY AND STRUCTUREThe property is underlain by remarkably fresh greywacke and slate of the Early Precambrian Yellowknife group. The thickness of the b ~ds averages 1 to 2 feet, although that of the coarser greywacke may be 10 feet or more. Most of the greywacke beds show a gradation in grain from sandy at the base to slaty at the top. They are composed of chlorite, sericite; carbonate, and detrital quartz and feldspar grains.The structure of the greywacke and slate underlying a part of the property of Camlaren Mines, Limited, is shown in Fig. 1. The beds are isoclinally folded so that they dip at steep to vertical angles and at many places are overturned. The axes of the folds are 50 to several hundred feet apart, and generally plunge at angles of 45° or steeper. The beds along the axes of the folds generally meet to form a sharp V, and at the point of the V, or axial part of the fold, the beds are commonly ruptured . Minor faulting movements along the broken crests of the folds in many cases result in well-defined shear zones. Discontinuous quartz veins and irregular lens-like masses of quartz lying more or less parallel with the bedding are plentiful throughout the sediments, but tend to be concentrated along the ruptured and sheared, anticlinal and synclinal fold axes ( Fig. 1)."

New Afton mine is an 11,000 tonne per day block caving operation, located 8 km west of the city of Kamloops, British Columbia. Due to the nature of block caving and the weak rock mass at New Afton, the mine has faced and overcome many blasting challenges during its ramp-up to commercial production. As New Afton Mine continues to grow the demand for drill and blast precision has continued to grow as well; any misstep incurs delays in achieving full production capacity. The block cave mining method used at New Afton employs single-shot draw-bells, fired with very little void and blind undercutting, allowing little margin for error. New Afton has made continuous improvements to its blasting strategy by reacting quickly to real-time problems and employing sustainable, repeatable solutions to overcome its unique blasting requirements. Examples of these solutions include: increasing blast hole diameter, casing production drill holes, developing pre-loading procedures and developing strategies for remotely blasting under-broken remnants in both draw-bells and undercutting. Increasing the blast hole diameter has alleviated initial problems with hole plugging in the highly jointed rock mass at New Afton. This has reduced drill-cleaning time significantly and enabled New Afton to meet blasting targets. PVC hole casing was trialed when blasting in extremely fractured ground, where drill holes continually plugged. The casing allowed the drill holes to remain open long enough to load and blast. Calculations were carried out in order to achieve the same explosive energy in the cased holes as a typical blast. Results were generally positive, but more testing is required. Production flexibility and scheduling reliability have been maintained at New Afton by developing a pre-loading procedure for the production undercutting. In doing so, New Afton has been able to keep productivity high by having a flexible production schedule that is not reliant on a specific piece of equipment or production drive to remain productive; this flexibility is because the mucking of undercut material can occur at any stage of the drill/blast/muck cycle. New Afton has developed a strategy for blasting remnant under-break in its draw-bells and undercutting by remotely drilling holes near to the under-broken section and then loading the toes of these holes with emulsion, the remainder of the hole is then filled with grout. The holes are grouted in order to prevent damage to permanent pillars between draw-bells (where the majority of the recovery holes need to be located). Several critical areas were recovered using this technique with little to no damage to the remaining permanent pillars. Innovative blasting solutions have allowed New Afton to overcome obstacles in order to become a producing operation. Moving forward, New Afton looks to continue its trend of innovative drilling and blasting techniques when faced with out of the ordinary situations.

"IntroductionPortland cement is produced by burning an accurately proportioned mixture (raw feed) of finely ground limestone, silica, alumina, and iron oxide. The kiln discharge (clinker) is a chemically complex mixture of calcium silicates, aluminates and ferrites which when ground and blended with from 2 to 5 percent of calcium sulphate is sold as Portland cement.ManufactureThe most common raw materials are limestone and clay or shale. The raw mix is finely ground and heated to about (2600°F) 1430°C to decompose the calcium carbonate and combine the calcium oxide with silica, alumina and iron to form a partly fused clinker. The clinker is then ground, usually with a small proportion of calcium sulphate (gypsum), which regulates set. Cements with special properties are produced by varying the oxide composition and also by adding small amounts of chemical agents at the clinker-grinding stage or later.Clinker is manufactured by either wet or dry process methods. In the wet process, raw materials are prepared, blended and fed to the kiln as a water slurry (about 30-35% water) . In the dry process, raw materials are prepared, blended and fed to the kiln as a dry powder (about 0.5% water). The processing procedure is as follows:"

Introduction A Self-Dumping cage which combines the features of a small skip and a cage has been used in a vertical winze between the 2,000 and 2,500 levels at the Coniaurum mine for the past three years, during which time its success has been demonstrated by uninterrupted service and low maintenance charges. lt was designed by John Reddington, mine manager, and was built under his supervision in the Coniaurum mine shops. Being new in many of its operating features, a small-scale model was made and tried before the final construction was undertaken. The mechanical performance of the model suggested a few minor changes that were incorporated in the final drawings. During its three years of use, the automatic dumping device has saved the expense of deck-handling of the cars. This actually represents a gross economy of something over four times the cost of construction and installation, which totalled $1,325. The cage, empty, weighs 2,200 pounds, of which 500 pounds represents the weight of the dumping accessory and necessarily heavier construction. Besides a considerable financial saving, the time saved in unloading increases the daily hoisting capacity of the winze. In raising ore from the 2,500 level, five minutes are required for a complete trip. Allowing one minute for the alternative of decking, we believe that the automatic dumping has increased the capacity of the winze hoist nearly 20 percent.

The system functions only by water and might offer advantages where other methods of mica separation are not available. INTRODUCTIONVarious methods for the separation of micas, wollastonite, and garnet, e.g., screening, flotation, magnetic separation, and heavy liquids, are well known (e.g., Spence, 1929; Bates,I960; Gillson et al., 1960; Benjamin, 1971; Connor and Kolhnar, 1991; Collings and Andrews, 1991). However, where these methods are not available, the separation of micas by a hydrocyclic system developed by Sarafi and Aftabi (1991) may prove to be economic. This note is a brief description of the hydrocyclic system. Minerals and MethodFor testing the recovery of mica and other minerals from different rocks (garnet-mica schist, skarn, and pegmatite), standard minerals were tested first, and then rock samples. Pure mineral standards were prepared from coarse-grained samples of pegmatite, mica schist and skarn; the grain size of the minerals separated was more than I cm. The Hydrocyclic System and Mineral SeparationThe hydrocyclic system is shown schematically in Figure 1. In the first step in mineral separation, mineral and rock samples were crushed, milled, and then sieved to minus 250 plus 125 microns. Approximately 10 gm to 25 gm of the sample were inserted in decanter Dt • The motor pwnps, M1 and M2, were then turned on and the water valve rl was opened. At this time, water was flowing turbulently (30 em3/sec. to 50 em3/sec.) and minerals were separated according to their crystallographic nature, density and!or habit. The fInal separation was done by exit valves r2, r3 and r4, while the motor pwnps were still operating. After each experiment, the rt , r2&apos; r3 and r4 valves were closed and the motor pumps were turned off. Following this, minerals in each decanter and the mter were collected, dried and weighed. The whole time of the experiment was optimized to be about 10 minutes, but varied from 3 to 15 minutes for micas and garnets. respectively."
