Abstract -Auriferous, bedding-parallel veins occur in zones of carbonaceous, argillaceous and sulfidic turbidites in the Lower to Middle Cambrian sandy flysch of the Goldenville Formation. The ?34S values for vein and wall-rock arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite, and for regional pyrite and pyrrhotite, are highly positive. The values are similar to those from Cambro-Ordovician sediment-hosted deposits of other types, and display trends that increase upward in the stratigraphic sequence. The similarity in composition of vein and wallrock sulfides indicates a seawater-sulfate source for sulfur, derived from the enclosing rocks at the time of vein formation. The upward increase in ?34S values is consistent with closed system sulfate reduction in the anoxic portion of a stratified water-column. Published ?18C and ?18O values for Meguma Group vein carbonates are unlike those of other gold-vein carbonates, but are similar to those of diagenetic-metamorphic carbonates from the Meguma Group and elsewhere. These data indicate that the source for the vein-related sulfides and carbonates may be the host strata; possibly the arsenic and gold were derived from the same source.

In this work, short and long-term tests were performed using different massive mineral sulfide specimens (chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite and chalcocite) of museum grade and quartz of analytical grade in an acid medium containing silver ions. After attack, the samples were observed by SEM and products characterized by EDS. Parallel, massive specimens of pyrite (FeS2) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) were embedded in an epoxy resin, either electrically isolated or in electrical contact, and treated with silver ions in the presence of bacteria. Finally, massive chalcopyrite and pyrite electrodes were subjected to electrochemical measurements in an acid medium under different experimental conditions (addition of silver ions and inoculation). The results showed that silver deposition takes place preferentially on specific mineral surfaces: chalcopyrite, galena, covellite and chalcocite. The chemical reaction of silver ions with pyrite and sphalerite was negligible at low silver concentration (8 ppm). But sphalerite reacted with silver ions at higher silver concentration (100 ppm). In a mixture of chalcopyrite and pyrite, silver was deposited on the former surface creating new cathodic sites which sped up the electrochemical reactions of chalcopyrite dissolution.

"Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. In the spring of 1977, Revenue Canada announced its intention to proceed in 1978 with a plan to impute a taxable benefit on interest-free and low-interest loans provided to employees. Such loan arrangements are often an important aspect of the compensation packages provided by many companies to their employees. Since the original announcement, there have been many submissions to Revenue Canada opposing this change, and the Finance Minister has now brought down a compromise solution with the introduction of a proposed amendment to the Income Tax Act. The amendment, which would not take effect until the 1979 taxation year, would require an employee, a shareholder or a related person to include a benefit in income measured as the difference between the interest on any such loan computed at bank prime rate and any interest actually paid. Only the amount of such a benefit in excess of $500 in a particular year would be required to be included in income. Of particular interest is the exclusion from these benefit rules of loans up to $50,000 in respect of the purchase of a house on the relocation of an employee and loans provided for the purchase of shares of an employer corporation.

A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the pilot scale for the extraction of gold. Mineralogical analysis of the concentrate identified gold to be mainly present in the form of a solid solution in pyrite. This gold distribution resulted in a poor extraction yield of 55% by direct cyanidation. A piloting campaign including an oxidative pre-treatment by roasting in a fluid bed was followed by treatment with halogens for gold extraction has led to a gold extraction yield of 96.5%. Sulphur removal during the oxidation was very efficient at >99.5% and gold extraction by the halogens was completed within a 1 hour contact time. The piloting was performed on a 300 kg sample and uses a diluted solution of hypohalites as the oxidizing agent for gold extraction. Sulphuric acid was injected in the reactor during the halogens treatment to lower pH to 2. The diluted solution of hypohalites (1-3%) was generated by electrolysis during the piloting campaign in a membrane-less electrolysis cell. The extracted gold was recovered over activated carbon in column and the gold depleted brine was treated for impurities removal and recycled for further gold extraction. With the recycling of water and brine, the regeneration of hypohalites and with a barren solid that is inert and stable, the Nichromet Extraction technology is a green process where the protection of the environment does not preclude profitability.

Since I983, contract research for industry and government has generated 31 man-years of high-tech employment, added $2.3 million to the local economy and contributed new technology for Canadian coal. Industry now has access to new procedures for coal minerals analysis, pyrolysis, and geochemistry applied to industrial problems of exploration, beneficiation, conversion and combustion.Research at the Institute is market-driven, based on cost recoveries from contracts. The financial performance to date exceeds that of similar industrial research institutes in major cities and demonstrates that small isolated laboratories are cost-effective. Economic renewal of Canada's resource industries will require increased R&D which in turn can be a source of local employment and pride. Small research teams are more efficient but require an enlightened policy of contracting-out by big business and big government."

"The Cordilleran region of western Canada includes most of British Columbia and the Yukon and pares of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The western part of this region was for about 50 years the principal mineral producing area of the Dominion. It lost this distinction in 1907 when production from the mines of the Canadian Shield took the lead, but it continues to provide about 15 percent of the total Canadian production. In 1945 the total mineral production of British Columbia and the Yukon was valued at $65,302,900, of which about 80 percent was derived from metals.This paper is intended to serve as an introduction co the more derailed Cordilleran papers. Part I includes a brief synopsis of the complex geology and diverse types of mineralization in the region and Parr II collates the main structural principles exemplified in the derailed papers, and draws some conclusions regarding the application of this information to prospecting."

Peak laboratory strength data obtained from low permeability clay shales/rocks often display a bilinear or non-linear failure envelope. In many of these tests pore pressures are not measured because of issues associated with back-saturation prior to confined compressive loading. In such tests the effective state of stress at failure remains unknown and provides room for speculation. The non-linear shape of the failure envelope may have several reasons including the influence of capillary forces or the tendency of a saturated clay shale to dilate as the confining stress is changed. The former stems from sample preservation, preparation or core unloading effects and represents a partly saturated state (i.e., not representative for the in-situ state); the latter represents the response of a saturated material. This contribution discusses these issues based on a data set obtained from Opalinus Clay specimens, and concludes that without a careful back-saturation processes knowledge of the underpinning reasons for the non-linear failure envelope cannot be obtained.

The influence of partially replacing cement with marble waste on the workability and compressive strength of concrete bricks was investigated. Three replacement percentages, 10%, 20% and 30% weight marble waste, were used with different curing times of 7, 14 and 28 days. Two specimens were prepared for each percentage and curing time. For this study, marble powder from the Mining House Company in Saudi Arabia was used. It was observed that the replacement of cement in Concrete brick with marble waste enhanced the loading strength and the workability of the prepared concrete bricks. It was also observed that 20% replacement of cement with marble waste was the best replacement percentage compared to the other replacement percentages tested. Marble waste from manufacturing companies, either in powder, sludge or slab form, has negative impacts on the environment. In contrast, reusing marble waste has both economic benefits (i.e., selling the marble waste) and lessening the need for raw resources.

Enterprise optimization is a relatively new optimization approach to mine planning used to jointly consider all aspects of a mining operation affecting the mine planning process and related valuation. In this paper, it is applied at SEMAFO's Mana operations in Burkina Faso, consisting of several open pits and a proposed underground mine. The surface-minable ore is relatively shallow, and the pits are long and linear. The underground operations, as currently envisioned, will consist of a stoping operation accessed by two ramps from the surface. Power is a concern at this property due to local power being produced largely by diesel generators, and it has become one of the key optimization constraints. Other important parameters are the mining and processing rates, underground configuration and cutover elevation. Enterprise optimization was found to improve net present value for the Mana Operations property by simultaneously optimizing multiple parameters and constraints to arrive at an optimal pit and mining phase design, optimal cut-off grades over time, and optimal ore feed based on ore hardness, power constraints, and head wades. Reserves were expanded several times over the course of the study to improve the valuation of the mining operation and put SEMAFO in its present enviable position of ongoing reserve increases.

Three types of gold species were observed for gold-zeolites, prepared by reduction of ionexchanged Au species in a series of zeolites: (i) Au3+cations, (ii) neutral Au0 n or charged Aus+ n clusters suggested to be inside the zeolite channels, (iii) Au nanoparticles with diameter varied from 2 through 20 nm located on the external surface of zeolite microcrystals. Contribution of the gold species formed in zeolite after the ion exchange was found to depend on zeolite type, acidity of zeolite, temperature of reduction and time of storage of the exchanged and reduced Au-containing zeolites. Au3+ ionic species and clusters Aun were formed after the ion-exchange procedure (in contrast with the familiar production of Agn in same zeolites). Gold nanoparticles were observed only as the result of reduction of the Au-exchanged forms at elevated temperatures due to reduction of Au3+ species and aggregation of clusters.

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. The main objective of this work is to optimize the grinding technologies for tantalum ores with high pressure grinding rolls. The selected ore for this study was an altered leucogranite from the Penouta Open Pit Mine (NW Spain). In the present work mono-size experiments have been carried out using grinding rolls with controlled pressure. The particle size distribution has been monitored in the input and output of the high pressure grinding rolls for each experiment. The cylinder pressure that is transmitted to the particles has been determined. New population balance models are presented for high pressure grinding rolls with parameter adjust for tantalum ore. The obtained model uses the physical description of particles under the comminution action of the grinding rolls. The obtained results are in agreement with other models and the errors in the adjustment are low. The selection function proposed for this model describes adequately the breakage probability of the particles inside the high pressure grinding rolls. The presented model can be a good alternative for simulating a high pressure grinding roll process. INTRODUCTIONTechnology for grinding have been improved for many years, introducing new variables and parameters involving energy consumption, mechanical stress analysis of the compression particles or pressure application for optimizing the comminution (Morrell et al, 1997). High pressure grinding rolls is a modern technology that is proven to reduce the operating costs in full scale plants when compared with other milling technologies. Its benefits on energy saving and simplicity in the process have been studied and applied, first in the cement clinker industry (Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009) and after in mining activities, especially in metallic ore deposits (Austin et al, 1991; Guevara & Menacho, 1992; Morrel et al, 1997; Torres & Casali 2009; Numbi & Xia, 2015). "The Eagle East project, accessed from the existing and operating Eagle Mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, is an underground base metal project currently in execution by Lundin. This paper will provide an update on several aspects of ventilation including use of a twin-decline access, innovative airflow crossover arrangement and construction ventilation methodology. Integration into existing mine ventilation systems including construction methodology will also be covered. Performance benchmarks and lessons learned are discussed across these topics.INTRODUCTIONLundin has owned and operated the Eagle Mine since 2013. This hard rock underground mine is located in the upper peninsula of Michigan, USA. High-grade nickel ore is mined using sublevel open stoping mining methods and trucked to surface via haul ramp. The mine, having been in production for four years, is nearing the completion of the initial orebody. A satellite orebody 2,000 meters East of the current workings and approximately 900 meters below surface, was identified that could extend operations until 2023. In 2016, Lundin approved the Eagle East project and construction began in 2017 (Lundin Mining Corporation, 2017).Due to proximity to the existing mine, Eagle East will be both accessed and serviced from the existing Eagle Mine. Ventilation at the Eagle Mine uses two fresh air intakes with direct fired combustion heaters; one at the mine portal feeding fresh air into the ramp and one at a fresh air raise located near the Eagle deposit. The primary ventilation circuit is powered on the exhaust air side, with two 700 hp exhaust fans located at a single return air raise. Underground, fresh air is distributed through the main access decline and fresh air raise (FAR) to the production levels and controlled with mechanical regulators on the exhaust side. The exhaust air is collected through return air raises with a collector/transfer drift on 250 Level and then to the surface through a return air raise (RAR)."

In response to requests from its stakeholders, the International Standards Organisation is engaged in development of an international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) which will become "ISO 50001". This new standard will build on the successes of both the EN16001 EnMS standard that has been used by dozens of European companies, as well as the ANSI/MSE 2000:2008 EnMS standard that is currently being used in several pilot projects in the USA and Ontario. This paper provides an overview of the key points of the EnMS standards, and describes how they can be used to drive sustainable energy reductions in the metallurgy industry.

"Lead was among the first metals known to man, and there are indications that lead was produced by the reductive smelting of galena in the mountains surrounding the Black Sea as early as 3000 B. C .(1). The early metallurgists soon discovered that silver could be recovered from lead bullion by cupellation techniques, and that the litharge product of the cupellation process could be reduced to give silver-free lead metal. By the Graeco-Roman era, lead-silver ores were being extensively exploited for both their silver and lead contents. Although silver was always of prime concern, a number of industrial uses existed for lead that included piping and sheeting. Subsequently, lead metallurgical practice developed steadily in different parts of the world, and was a relatively mature technology by the time of the European colonization of North America. In the United States, lead was produced on a small scale as early as 1720, and by 1800, the extensive Pb-Zn deposits of Missouri-Kansas and the upper Mississippi Valley were being developed(2). Many of the early American lead ores were low in silver, and seemed to have been worked primarily for their lead contents. Major uses of lead at the time included bullets, pipe and sheeting. During the period 1860-1890, the silver-rich galena ores of the western United States were exploited, and a number of lead smelters were operated. Although all the smelters produced lead metal, the recuperation of the associated silver and gold values was generally of prime concern. In Canada, lead deposits are abundant, and galenarich outcrops frequently attracted the attention of the early explorers and prospectors. In fact, the first record of a Canadian ore deposit seems to have been the observation of an argentiferous galena vein near Lake Temiscamingue in 17 41(3). The presence of silver-bearing lead deposits naturally attracted the attention of the mining community, and many outcrops were worked throughout the country. Because of the problems associated with transporting lead concentrates to existing American or overseas smelters, attention soon shifted to the establishment of local lead smelting facilities. The purpose of this article is to examine those early smelting efforts and to try to identify the first ""successful"" Canadian lead smelter."
