Microscopical and X-ray diffraction techniques were used to identify two intermediate phases in that part of the solid region of the magnesium-cerium system between and Mg3Ce. Previous literature had reported only one intermediate phase for this region, 1)12t chemical analysis determined the approximate composition of the two compounds to be Mg23Ce2 and Mg17Ce2. The range in composition of the two intermediate phases was found to be limited to less than 0.3 atomic percent cerium. The study did not determine the crystal structure of Mg17Ce2, but that of Mg23Ce2 is tetragonal with a = 10.33 A and c = 19.51 A.

The question of earth models has repeatedly arisen in our work. An accurate representation of the seismic properties is required for three reasons: 1.To be able to determine from a set of received arrival times, the location of a seismic source in the earth, and secondly the degree of accuracy required in the model used for calculating source location from the set of arrival time differences. 2. To be able to determine the expected arrival times at an array of geophones produced in response to a hypothetical source in the earth. 3. To be able to estimate received signal strengths more accurately. The work reported here on earth models is based on information from sever- al consultants and from others who expressed an interest in the problem and supplied information to us. II. COAL MINE GEOLOGY On one of our earlier assignments for the Bureau of Mines, Earth Science Research Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts prepared for us a short description of the lithology to be expected at coal mine sites. This description follows, together with the ranges of compressional seismic velocities (Figure I*) associated with typical materials comprising the layered structure of a coal mine area. Coal is primarily associated with fresh water sediments including sandstones, shales, and clays, and occasionally may be metamorphased to varying degrees. In the Appalachian Basin the coal beds occur within cyclical sequences of non-marine shales, sands tones, conglomerates, limes tones, and clays. The beds range in thickness from a few inches to 60 feet, averaging between 2 feet and 10 feet. They have generally broad areal extent, occasionally up to 5,000 square miles, and have an overall tabular or lens-like shape. Within a particular lens, local changes in thickness are normal.

Much interest has been shown recently in the possible utilization of dolomite as a source of magnesium metal, a large production of which is deemed essential for national defense. As a result, many inquiries have been received by the Bureau of Mines as to sources of dolomite. This report has been prepared primarily to augment the Bureau's present published information on the occurrence of high-grade dolomite deposits in the United States. To supplement such data, the report also defines dolomite and related rocks and describes their properties and uses. The uses are covered in some detail in Information Circular 6524 entitled "Utilization of Dolomite and High-Magnesium Limestone," published in 1931 but now out of print. All essential data on uses contained in that report have been incorporated herein, and. have: been supplemented by data developed during subsequent years. DEFINITION Dolomite is a mineral composed of calcium end magnesium carbonates combined in equal molecular proportions, expressed by the formula CaMg(C03)2. "A study is presently underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal breakage and cutting procedures. The present paper will focus on the test facilities, experimental techniques, and results associated with linear, single-bit cutting. An AE-transducer, attached directly to the bit, detected AE signals during the cutting process.Experiments have been carried out on seven specimens of coal obtained from the USBM experimental mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. Three separate cuts were made for each of two bit angles (10 and 45 degrees) and two bit velocities (0.085 and 0.169 cm/sec), for a total of 12 separate cuts. Data associated with resulting particle size distribution and AE characteristics (major dominant frequency components) will be discussed. Data analysis has also been underway using a computer-based pattern recognition system known as ICEPAK (Intelligent Classifier Engineering Package). This program is able to evaluate over 100 features of an AE event and to make objective comparisons between AE signals associated with different loading or cutting parameters. The results to date show that AE generated during some of the test conditions can be recognized by ICEPAK with a recognition rate of 90% and higher while other conditions cannot at present be separated with a suitable recognition rate. Further analysis of the experimental data is presently underway.The reduction of the severity, and eventual elimination, of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) depends on gaining fundamental understanding in a number of major areas. These include dust generation and entrainment, transportation, suppression, medical effects of dust, and possible treatment. At present a project is underway by the authors to investigate the character of the bit-coal interaction during coal cutting and its influence on the size and shape distributions of the generated dust. An important aspect of this on-going project is the development of acoustic emission (AE) criteria which would make it possible to carry out remote monitoring of coal cutting operations. Suitable on-line analysis of monitored AE data would allow engineers to evaluate factors such as shearer bit conditions and cutting efficiency, and to quantify the particle size and shape distribution of the generateddust. The on-going AE studies are fundamental in form and were undertaken to evaluate the general feasibility of AE monitoring techniques using simplified coal cutting procedures. To date experiments have been carried out on coal under uniaxial compression, linear single-bit cutting, and cutting using a laboratory-scale, single-bit shearer. A brief outline of the overall study has been presented in an earlier paper (Hardy, Shen and Kimble, 1995). This paper will consider the linear single-bit cutting studies in more detail.It is generally accepted today that most solids emit low-level seismic signals when they are stressed or deformed. In this paper this phenomenon will be referred to as acoustic emission (Hardy 1972, 1981, 1989). In essence, the measurement of AE activity in a field or laboratory structure is relatively simple. A suitable transducer is attached to the structure, the output of the transducer is connected to an associated monitoring system, and the AE signals occurring in the structure, due to internal or external stress, deformation, and failure are suitably acquired, pre¬processed and recorded."

A study on a small laboratory scale was made of the use of ammoniacalammonium carbonate for batch leaching Mn from low- grade manganiferous materials ( 6 to 16 pct Mn) obtained from deposits in the southern district of Aroostook County , Maine . These materials were partially reduced at 500 ° to 700 ° C with H₂ or CO and then leached with solutions of NH and CO₂ dissolved in water . Extraction of 80 to 90 pct of the Mn was obtained from some sample materials , but 10 to 34 pct of the iron was also extracted . Material from the Littleton Ridge deposit contained manganese intimately associated with Fe , a condition which contributed to difficulties in obtaining a commercially acceptable product . Extensive investigations of the leach and reduction processes with various mixtures of H₂ and water vapor , and CO and CO₂ , failed to disclose a set of conditions for selectively leaching the manganese . Finely divided metallic Fe was probably produced during the reduction steps so that Fe was leached with the Mn in the subsequent extractions .

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies on low-grade vanadiferous silicates from the Pumpkin Buttes and Nine Mile Lake deposits of Wyoming to examine techniques for extracting vanadium and uranium. Recovery from low-grade sources such as these could contribute to future vanadium production and reduce reliance on vanadium imports. The Pumpkin Buttes samples contained 0.03 to 0.04 pct V205 and 0.06 to 0.12 pct U308; the Nine Mile Lake samples contained 0.02 to 1.0 pct V205 and 0.06 to 0.19 pct U308" Leaching the Pumpkin Buttes samples for 18 h at 800 C with addition of 200 lb/ton H2S04 resulted in recoverey of 80 pct of the vanadium contained in the samples. The Nine Mile Lake samples were readily leached, yielding 78 to 94 pct of the vanadium after 3 h at 800 C with addition of 100 lb/ton H2S04, A solvent extraction procedure was used to selectively recover urani-um from Pumpkin Buttes and Nine Mile Lake leach solutions and to recover vanadium from the raffinates. In batch shakeout tests, Alamine 336 recovered over 95 pct of the uranium from leach solution adjusted to pH 1. Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid and Cyanex 272 recovered vanadium from the uranium raffinate after reduction and adjustment to pH 2; vanadium extractions of up to 96 pet and 92 pct, respectively, were achieved.

The U.S. economy boomed in 1965, completing its fifth consecutive year of expansion. Although the advance was somewhat irregular, previous records for production, sales, employment, and income were topped. During the first few months of 1965, as the economy recovered from the depressing effects of the automobile strikes of late 1964, increases were unusually large. The gains moderated in early spring, but were stimulated at midyear by sharply rising capital outlays, excise tax cuts, in? creased Social Security payments, and accelerated Viet-Nam defense expenditures. Gross national product (GNP) in cur-rent dollars rose $49.5 billion or 7.8 percent, to a total of S681.2 billion. In constant dollars (effects of price changes eliminated), GNP increased 5.9 percent, a rate considerably higher than the historical postwar annual average growth of 3.5 per-cent. Demand increased in most final markets and was especially strong for business fixed investment and consumption expenditures. With the exception of construction, most of the increases in GNP were real, since prices increased less than 2 percent.

"In smelting operations, finely divided material called ""flue dust"" is carried by the moving gases from the roasters and furnaces; it is partly settled and recovered in the flue system. The flue dust from copper smelters contains a high percentage of copper, usually some gold and silver, and occasionally other valuable metals. It is too valuable to throw away and in present practice is returned to the smelting furnaces for re-treatment. A part of this material again passes out with the gases and forms a circulating dust load in the system. The dust that passesout of the stacks into the atmosphere is an important source of loss in copper smelting. Loss of values also occurs by dust being blown away while in transit from the flues back to the furnace, and of course the greater the amount of rehandling the greater this loss.Dust carried in the gas currents causes corrosion of the roof arches in reverberatory furnaces. Returning flue dust to the furnace increases the quantity of suspended dust. Corrosion reduces the life of the arches and shortens the length of furnace campaigns; also the corrosion of arches limits the temperature at which a furnace may be operated. Every ton of material that must be re-treated in the furnaces reduces correspondingly the amount of new ore or concentrates that could be smelted.As the present tendency is toward finer grinding in flotation plants smaller particles will need to be treated at the smelters, increasing the difficulty of preventing losses in flue dusts. Many schemes and processes for a more economical method of treating flue dust have been proposed or tried, but in the main none of them has been successful."

The importance of recovering more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increasing emphasis on the application of secondary producing methods. One of the most successful of these has been the injection of water into depleted oil reservoirs. Water flooding is now recognized as a valuable conservation measure that not only prevents the premature abandonment of stripper leases but also is credited with reviving operations in many oil-producing areas previously abandoned. The injection of water into an oil-producing zone as a method of stimulating oil production was legalized in Kansas in 1935. Although water flooding had been attempted previously in other parts of the State, 1935 marked its introduction into the shallow stripper area of eastern Kansas. Two years later flooding was begun in the five-county area that is described in this report. Figure 1 is a map showing the water-flood areas in Allen, Bourbon, Crawford, Labette, and Neosho Counties, Kans. To July 1, 1955, the 77 projects in the oil fields of these 5 counties are credited with recovering an estimated 12.3 million barrels of oil that would not have been produced by methods used previously. These projects are expected ultimately to cover 10,700 acres, of which only 5,400 has been flooded to date.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed aluminum chloride technology to determine the problems associated with its preparation from minerals, and to ascertain the best areas for research to solve these problems. Commercial AlC13 production processes are described and the ?state of the art? for the preparation of AlC13 from aluminous materials is evaluated. Areas for further research are indicated.

In 1965 the Western phosphate industry ranked third after Florida and Tennessee in total mine and marketable production of phosphate rock and phosphate rock products. It has become an important regional industry and, since the close of World War II, it has become important in the national phosphate economy. This report includes an evaluation of the trends and outlook for the Western phosphate industry through 1975 as part of the Bureau's program to determine the rate at which the Nation's mineral resources are being utilized. The first part of this report is concerned with the relationship between the Western phosphate industry and that of the United States and the world. It describes the principal phosphate deposits and discusses production, export, and import of phosphate rock and marketable products. The second part of the report is concerned with the Western phosphate industry and discusses trends and outlook through 1975. Projections for the utilization of phosphate rock, phosphate fertilizers, and elemental phosphorus have been developed and extended through 1975 in an effort to provide data and information pertaining to the rate of depletion of the Nation's phosphate resources.

In this final stage of a three-part investigation of the smelting of titania-bearing iron materials, the Bureau of Mines conducted semicontinuous smelting tests in a laboratory electric arc furnace on four concentrates and one are. The objective was to substantiate the significance of liquidus temperature measurements in predicting satisfactory slag compositions in electric furnace smelting of titaniferous magnetites to produce pig iron. Previously obtained liquidus temperature data were used in determining flux requirements. Self-fluxing pellets of either ore or concentrate plus fluxes and reductants were made to produce pig iron and slags containing 0.2 to 0.6 percent titanium. Individual constituents of the slags generally agreed within 5 percent with the value of the corresponding constituent of target composition. Liquidus temperature of furnace slags generally agreed within 50° C of the value obtained from corresponding nominal synthetic slag. The results of the three phases of the investigation may serve as guide-lines for determining flux requirements in smelting a wide variety of titaniferous magnetites and other titania and iron-bearing materials.

A series of studies of emissions from large coal-fired steam generators have included measurements of the concentrations of oxides of sulfur and oxides of notrogen. The sampling equipment, method of sampling, and analytical techniques used for processing of these samples are detailed. A method based on the precipitation of benzidine sulfate was developed for determining both SO3 and total oxides of sulfur in the presence of interfering acidic components in the stack gases. In addition, difficulties encountered with sampling and analytical techniques are also described.

This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four Showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

One of the best present-day yardsticks of the material welfare of a nation is its consumption of minerals, The United States, with only 7 percent of the world population, consumes 45 percent of the world wealth, pays the highest real wages, has the shortest working hours, and numbers the largest percentages of home owners among its population, and at the same time its per-capita consumption of minerals is far greater than that of any other nation. In 1937, British India, with roughly twice the population of the United States, used less than 2 percent as much lead, 4 percent as muck zinc, and 13 percent as much copper; even in Europe, which has three times our population and where war preparations have greatly expanded the normal needs of peaceful industries, the aggregate consumption of metals and industrial minerals other than lignite is less than the total for the United States alone. The march of civilization passed from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age before the dawn of history. It may be questioned whether man or monkey first threw stones at an enemy, but only man could have fashioned rough stones into weapons. Eoliths rudely shaped by apelike men are believed by archaeologists to have antedated by hundreds of thousands of years the existence of our own human ancestors. The primitive people that followed the retreating Ice Cap northward in early quaternary period - at least a million years ago - were fairly adept in the shaping of flints and even used a little copper. The Bronze Age, so-called, superseded the Stone Age when, around 8,000 B. C., the news spread that chunk s of natural copper could be pounded into better weapons or cutting implements than ever could be made by chipping stones. The Bronze Age gave place to the Iron Age about 1,000 B, C., and though students of modern history may speak of the Coal Age, the Petroleum Age, and the Automobile Age, and so on, these ages have all been crowded into a brief century and a half. The truth is that we still are in the Iron Age, unless perhaps we choose to call it the Age of Many Metals.

This report presents computer instructions for calculating the performance of three-phase flow of gas, oil, and water. The calculated results for an illustrative example are presented. The example is the waterflood of a reservoir containing free gas in the reservoir as a result of the partial depletion of the oil by the expansion of the gas initially in solution. The flood pattern for the example is a 5-spot.

The Welcome Creek Wilderness has small, dispersed gold placers. Pockets in the 25.5 million yd3 (19.5 million m3) of alluvium along Welcome and Rock Creeks have as much as $5.61 gold/yd3 ($7.34/m3) at $500/troy oz ($16.08/g). All the alluvium averages 20.1 cents gold/yd3 (26.3 cents/m3). Because of the low average gold content large-scale placer mining would not be economically feasible. Small-scale selective pocket mining, however, may be profitable. The alluvium along the streams in the Wilderness has little apparent potential for production of sand, gravel, or stone because alternate sources are closer to markets. The four lode prospects known within the Wilderness appear to have low mineral potential. No oil, gas, uranium, or geothermal energy sources are known to be present.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Hayden concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. is the first of a Series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Hayden concentrator is located at Hayden, Gila County, Ariz., 20 miles from the mine at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz., and approximately 1-1/2 miles north of the junction of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers. During the fourth quarter of 1928 the concentrator treated daily by flotation an average of 10,336 tons of ore containing 1.25 per cent of copper. The average recovery during this period amounted to 87.84 per cent of the total copper. The concentrates contained 19.88 per cent of copper.

This report describes a new method of weighing based upon observing the apparent weight of an object ill two separate pure gases. The method is presented in terms of experimental data which prove its soundness, but does not attempt to show the maximum accuracy possible with this technique. The new method incorporates the underlying principle that the apparent weight of an object is a linear function of the density of the atmosphere in which the object is weighed. The coefficients of this linear function are the true mass and volume of the object. From this functional relationship the true mass and volume of the object may be determined.
