Laboratory experiments were conducted on several materials to determine their suitability for the production of mineral wool. By blending raw charges in the proper proportions and in some instances by adding lime, acceptable wools were made from samples originating in Alaska, Florida, Texas, and Virginia. It was shown that satisfactory wools can be produced from many kinds of raw materials if the ratios of acidic and basic constituents are properly maintained. INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has facilities at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., for examining and testing mineral-wool raw materials. Samples are evaluated through small-scale wool-blowing experiments, aided by petrographic, chemical, and physical analyses of the raw materials and finished wools. When enough experimental data have been accumulated they are made public through Government reports and periodicals. This report of investigations follows that published in 19513/ and presents test data on samples received and examined since 1951.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated various methods for identifying sources of mercury vapor in excess of the threshold limit value (TLV) of 0.05 mg of mercury per cubic meter of air set by the American Council of Government and Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) for mines and mineral processing plants. Chemical spot tests and portable devices for mercury determination were evaluated, based on information from published sources and performance in laboratory tests. Among the parameters examined were sensitivity, interferences, cost, ease of use, and other factors pertinent to field application, More than 50 methods were evaluated. The investigators found that many readily available methods are suitable for identifying sources of mercury vapor in mines and mineral processing plants. The best method appears to be one that uses a commercially available mercury test paper sensitive only to mercuric ions. For some of the more promising chemical spot tests, this report includes step-by-step instructions for field application.

Multislice mining methods were analyzed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine their application to western United States thick coal seams; ground control, geology, and costs were considered. Multislice mining is used in widely varying seam conditions worldwide, including flat seams too thick to mine in a single pass, pitching thick seams, and seams containing a rock parting. Longwall multislice methods predominate, but room-and-pillar variants also exist. The initial use of the method in western seams is planned at a deep Colorado mine where a rock parting will be used to separate two slices mined by longwall. Ground control and spontaneous combustion are major hazards associated with multislice mining. A well-consolidated upper slice gob can reduce ground control problems and provide a seal against spontaneous combustion. Geologic analysis indicates that the consolidation of the gob depends on the composition of the upper slice roof, the presence of water, and sufficient overburden pressure. A geologically competent intermediate rock parting can also reduce ground control problems and seal against spontaneous combustion. To compete in western coal markets, the cost of multislice mining must be within the range of normal longwall costs. Analysis indicates that multislice operating costs should be within this range, and that multislice mining costs decrease as panel width increases. The present trend of chemicometallurgical research toward widespread and inclusive use of thermodynamic methods requires the inclusion of available data of this sort in any comprehensive metallurgical report . Such data for manganese are far from adequate for the full utilization of these methods . Even if our knowledge of these properties is weak , the collection of available figures is nevertheless well worth while , especially if their utilization in an approximate way may show inherent possibilities of application . No less important is the necessity for discovering the vital gaps in the existing information , to serve as a basis for further pertinent study . The utility of the thermodynamic methods of Lewis and Randall ( 234 ) 3 has become increasingly evident to metallurgists . It is true that at present no better approach to the general , fundamental problems of chemical metallurgy is available than close adherence to these methods . The effort is here made to collect and correlate , as far as possible , significant quantitative thermodynamic data on manganese and its metallurgically important compounds . There are considered here only the intrinsic properties of pure materials . The order maintained as far as possible will be as follows :

The direct retorting of zinc sulfide concentrates in the presence of lime and carbon was examined on a laboratory scale with ten-gram charges of loose mix or fifteen-gram ones of pellets. A slow stream of nitrogen swept through the furnace tube over the boat of reactants, carrying with it the zinc vapor, which condensed on a rolled-up steel sheet near the exit, permitting weight of zinc produced to be obtained after completion of a run. Variables explored were percent of theoretical reagents, temperature, and time. During the runs gas samples were analysed periodically, and the content of CO2, CO and nitrogen were obtained. The quantities of the carbon gases could be calculated because the nitogen flow rate was measured. The gases were also examined for sulfur species, but neither COS nor SO2 could be detected at maximum sensitivity. Zinc recovery increased with excess carbon and lime and with temperature. It ranged from 77% at a ten percent deficiency to 90% at a ten percent excess at 1100°C. Going to 1200°C and theoretical reagents gave 93% recovery. Increasing time from 200 minutes to 300 minutes increased zinc yield by up to 10%. Results from sphalerite and a commercial concentrate from AMAX gave generally similar results. The reaction rate of zinc sulfide as sphalerite and of calcined sphalerite indicated that the latter reacted almost twice as fast, and recovery of zinc was five percent higher. Though the retorting step using sulfide, lime, and carbon proved to be non-polluting, it was feared that on storage the calcium sulfide in the residues would decompose, giving off noxious gases. Consequently the stabilization of the residues by oxidation was essayed. Because of the presence of unreacted zinc sulfide, the first product of oxidation was S02. Reaction of CaS to CaSO4 was incomplete, going from 20% at 800°C to 90% at 1200°C. Thus the non-polluting nature of the process as a whole is in doubt, and its economics are likely to be unfavorable compared to the traditional way of calcining the concentrates, followed by retorting of the oxide with carbon.

Problem: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's [NIOSH] National Occupational Research Agenda (DHHS Publication No. 96 115) reports that approximately 50% of miners will experience hearing loss by age 50, compared to only 9% of the general population. The present investigation examines three antecedents believed to be associated with miner's use of hearing protection. Method: A posttest delayed posttest control group field research design was employed to assess antecedents toward wearing hearing protection. Results: Following the initial posttest, miners' attitudes and subjective norms were antecedents to intentions to wear hearing protection devices. Also, intentions toward wearing hearing protection predicted hearing protection behaviors. Approximately six weeks later, miners' attitudes and perceived behavioral control were each significant predictors of intentions to wear hearing protection and again, intentions were positively associated with hearing protection behaviors. Impact on Industry: Our results indicate that appeals to normative influences may be the most effective antecedent to employ when persuading coal miners to wear hearing protection. However, messages designed to impact attitudes and perceived behavioral control were also effective.

This report describes hydrogenation of petroleum distillate fuels in bench scale equipment and the effects of hydrogenation on the storage stability and the composition of the fuels. Two distillate fuels were hydrogenated in laboratory equipment using a commercially available cobalt molybdate catalyst. Reactor temperatures were varied from 600° to 850° F and pressures from 100 to 600 psig. Product fuels were analyzed by ASTM, Bureau of Mines, mass, and infrared methods. Hydrogenation of a catalytically cracked fuel from Oklahoma crude oil significantly improved the storage stability, reducing insoluble gum formed during 9 months of storage at 110° F from 19.0 to 1.3 mg per 100 ml fuel, average. Conversion of the olefins to other hydrocarbon types varied with the temperature of hydrogenation--at 700° to 850° F the conversion was mainly to aromatics, at 650° F about 50:50 to saturates and aromatics, at 600° F principally to saturates. Processing a fuel composed of a mixture of virgin distillate and catalytically cracked stock, both from Illinois crude, at 700° F and 200 psig effected marked improvement in stability; the buildup of insoluble gum in storage was lowered from 18.3 to less than 1 mg per 100 ml fuel.

The presence of magnetite, either dissolved or suspended as solid crystals, in slags from the copper reverberatory furnace is a frequently mentioned cause of an abnormally high copper content in those slags. The presence of this oxide in the slag is to be expected, since it is present in appreciable amounts in both converter slag and roaster calcine which comprise a considerable proportion of the furnace feed. Magnetite is also a product of some of the furnace reactions. These abnormal losses result in several ways. Magnetite is supposed to favor the formation and retention of copper ferrite, in the slag. Crystals of solid magnetite suspended in the slag are objectionable-because they make the slag less fluid and often entrap globules of matte. Frequently these crystals settle into a layer at the slab-matte interface which may have such mechanical strength as to create a false bottom and interfere with furnace operation by preventing separation of matte from slag. Magnetite may, by crystallizing on the furnace bottom, build the bottom to such a level that the furnace can no longer be operated.

An investigation was made to devise and evaluate a flexible flotation method for beneficiating typical tactite types of calcareous scheelite - bearing ores ; these scheelite - bearing ores are available in large tonnages in deposits containing 0.2 to 0.3 pct tungsten trioxide . The objective was to achieve a high recovery of the tungsten in concentrates , containing a minimum of 10 pct WO3 , that would be suitable for chemical processing into high- quality synthetic scheelite . The principal problems encountered and resolved by bench- scale flotation tests on ore samples from five different deposits were to define the conditions and reagent combinations essential for ( 1 ) achieving selective flotation of a small amount of scheelite from a large amount of calcite and ( 2 ) controlling the effect of small amounts of calcium , magnesium , and iron salts in the ores and water used . The flotation process was evolved from batch tests and continuous runs in a pilot - scale mill with a capacity of 100 lb per hour . The flotation process comprised ( 1 ) removal of sulfide minerals , ( 2 ) conditioning the residual ore pulp with sodium carbonate , quebracho , and trisodium phosphate , and ( 3 ) rougher flotation and single - stage cleaning of a scheelite concentrate . In a pilot plant run , over 91 pct of the tungsten was recovered from ore containing 0.27 pct WO3 , in a concentrate containing 11.2 pct WO3 .

This report presents the results of laboratory beneficiation tests on a sample of scheelite ore and a sample of low-grade scheelite flotation concentrate from the Sangdong mine, Korea. Sangdong was the foremost producer of tungsten concentrates on two occasions - during part of World War II and in 1953. It was also a significant producer of bismuth concentrates. Resources are very extensive and could support a 5,000-ton annual output of tungsten concentrates for many years. Located in the eastern part of South Korea near the 37° latitude, Sangdong has been a vital source of dollar income for the Republic of Korea in recent years. Its shutdown in March 1954 came about as a result of the great decline of tungsten prices and the fact that a sales contract with the United States Government had been terminated, In addition to establishing new markets, the problem of reopening Sangdong will be related to cost reductions and improving mill recoveries. Large quantities of offgrade scheelite concentrates were produced in the past and shipped to the United States for further beneficiation. Other low-grade concentrates and middlings have been stockpiled or discarded at the mine plant.

This report describes the demonstration of longwall mining in a seam dipping 27 to 34'. Equipment was selected on the basis of capability, compatibility, and co t. Snowmass, Bureau of Mines, consultants and manufacturers were involved in the selection process. The equipment arrived in early 1981, prior to completion of development for the first panel; therefore, the equipment was operated on the surface for training. The surface training paid off with a fast, efficient installation and start-up of the face. The longwall equipment operated very well on the steep pitch with an average equipment downtime of 21.9[9]. Coal handling outby the face was a problem which caused an additional downtime of 19.5%. Development for the panels proved to be the major problem in the economics of longwall mining on a steeply dipping seam. During the first 9 months of operation the longwall averaged 71.9 TPMS and development averaged 0.6 TPMS for an overall average of 14.1 TPMS. Had mining continued, timing of development would have been another major problem. Monitoring of subsidence, pillar stability and shield loading was done in connection with mining, but little useful information was gained from the monitoring.

Large quantities of gasoline are lost each year by evaporation from bulk-storage station tanks. The rate of evaporation from bulk-station tanks is influenced by two principal factors: First, the vapor pressure of the gasoline in the tank; and second, the amount of "breathing" of the tank. The vapor pressures of the gasoline govern the amount of the gasoline vapor in the air-vapor mixture above the gasoline in a tank at a given temperature. This is one of the principal factors in determining the total pressure of the air-vapor mixture within the tank. The "breathing" of the tank is caused by the inflow of air from the atmosphere during certain periods of the day and the expulsion of the air-vapor mixtures at other times, caused by atmospheric variations. The pressure built up within a tank and the amount of gasoline in the air-vapor mixture are both a direct function of the temperature existing within the tank. Therefore, two of the most common methods for reducing evaporation losses from bulk-station tanks are: (1) The use of vapor-tight tanks equipped with relief valves and operated at 1 or 2 ounces of pressure and about 1/2-ounce vacuum; (2) reducing the temperature of tanks and their contents by painting them a light color, by insulation, and in some instances by using water sprays. Water sprays, although effective, usually are too expensive to operate economically. In order to determine and compare the effects of various colors, insulation, and pressure in reducing the evaporation losses of gasoline held in storage in bulk-storage tanks, the Bureau of Mines made observations from May 29 to October 15. 1930, on five horizontal tanks of 12,000-gallon capacity each, which were erected at the plant of Black. Sivalls and Bryson Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, Mo. This report gives in detail the results of these evaporation tests.

In 1930 the Shenandoah-Dives Mining Co. near Silverton, Colo., put into operation a newly erected, 300-ton selective flotation plant to mill complex ores from its nearby mine. The operation was a steady producer and was enlarged to treat 600 to 800 tons a day. In 1942 the company opened and started milling an area in the mine containing semioxidized ore. The valuable mineral. Content of this ore was considerably higher than in the straight sulfide ore previously handled alone. The mixture of clean sulfide and semi-oxidized ore was difficult to treat; consequently tailing losses, especially with respect to lead, were high. A. few years later, in order to study the possibilities, of obtaining higher recoveries by a modification of the mill flow sheet, a 1,200-pound sample of mill feed, taken over a period of several days by the company, was submitted to the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station for testing. Although this sample proved to contain more than twice as much lead as the average yearly mill feed, the same problem of recovering the oxidized values were present.

"INTRODUCTION The necessity for protection against the hazards of lightning manifests itself from time to time in the mining industry by reason of loss of life, damage to electrical equipment, fires in surface structures at mines, and accidents in the handling and use of explosives. This paper is intended to assemble, correlate, and present some of the salient points embodied in the available literature on the subject and at the same time give some factual data concerning instances of such loss of life and damage to property, with special application to the mining industry.The annual loss of life and destruction of property by lightning is considerable; the former may be prevented to a limited extent, though use of common sense as to exposure is required and not always followed; the latter can be prevented to a considerable degree. The manufacturers of electrical equipment, through improved types of lightning arresters, have done much toward the protection of electrical equipment, with consequent safeguarding of life and of property. Education based on unfortunate experiences has gone far to discourage the handling of explosives and blasting accessories during thunder storms, especially in open pits and quarries, and to a much smaller extent in underground workings. The lowly lightning rod plays an important role in the protection of certain types of buildings (especially isolated buildings), stacks, monuments, and other structures.LIGHTNING PHENOMENAIn 1751, Franklin proved that, lightning was simply a visible display of electricity - an extended spark; and until a generation ago little had been added to his exposition to define the various phases of the phenomenon. Shortly after the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 we passed by Congress, the Bureau of Mines was authorized to begin a program of investigation of domestic sources of strategic minerals. Since World War I, the Philipsburg district had been virtually the only one in the United States that was producing manganese on a commercial scale. Consequently, the district was among the first to he investigated. During the summer of 1939, the Geological Survey mapped the geology and ore deposits of the district. In late July 1939 the writer examined the district for the Bureau of Mines. On the basis of this examination and of the work performed by the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled at several properties in the district during the summer of 1940. This report reviews the mining history and geology of the district, and presents the factual data obtained by diamond drilling.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites. The objective of this study was to compare two mines, each affected by this pillar load transfer mechanism, and to show how this interaction affected underground workings by the installing and monitoring underground instrumentation. At mine site A where the overburden was 1,000 ft, the innerburden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft), overlays of the mine layout show pillars were not superpositioned, excessive roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only. At mine site B, the overburden was approximately 555 ft, the innerburden thickness was approximately 105 ft, overlays of the mine layout show pillars were superpositioned, minimal roof to floor convergence was measured, and pressure readings indicated a skin loading only.

"For a good many years the Bureau of Mines and various state mining experi¬ment stations have endeavored to develop some method of utilizing the immense deposits of lignite in the United States. Work in relent year has indicated that the best method of this is to drive off the moisture and most of the volatile water from the lignite in some form of carbonizing apparatus leaving a residue high in fixed carbon and low in moisture and volatile matter, which by briquetting can be made into a high-grade fuel. The earlier forms of carbonizing equipment tried were complicated, costly to build and keep in repair, and could not be operated intermittently without being seriously damaged. During the year 1922, however the Bureau of Mines devised a very simple carbonizing oven which produces a uniformly well carbonized product. This oven is essentially a vertical shaft with means for supplying raw lignite at the top and discharging the carbonized limited at the lower end. Air in regulated amount is admitted to the shaft at two horizons, and a zone of combustion maintained through which the column of lignite passes. The lignite is thus carbonized by construction of its contained matter and a small proportion of its fixed carbon, leaving most of the fixed carbon in the carbonized product or ""char"". The degree of carbonization can be closely controlled by varying the volume of air supplied to the oven and the rate of travel of the charre down the shaft.The ""lignite char"" produced is a soft material resembling charcoal more than coal or coke, but somewhat harder than charcoal.
