Data are presented on the characteristics of lignites with emphasis on the composition and fusion properties of the ash. Differences in the analyses of commercial-grade lignites are related primarily to variations in moisture and ash contents. Lignite ash is generally characterized by high concentra¬tions of alkaline earth oxides and a greater tendency for retention of sulfur in the ash than higher-rank coals. Composition of ash varies significantly within and between mines. The differences within mines are significant for short distances and may be eliminated under certain circumstances by normal mixing occurring during mining. The sulfur in lignite averages 0.6 percent and is found primarily in the organic or pyritic forms with only a trace of the sulfate. During the stan¬dard laboratory asking procedures, from 60 to 100 percent of the original sul¬fur is retained in the lignite ash. Trace elements, such as uranium and germanium, in the ash from commercial¬-grade lignites are present in low concentrations, but others, primarily copper and silver, are present in specific samples in concentrations approaching those found in some commercial ores.

The chemical and thermal criteria used for predicting the spontaneous combustion hazard are briefly reviewed and data are presented to characterize the gas desorptions and self-heating tendencies of 29 U.S. coals. Closed vessel desorption experiments showed that CO, CO2, and CH4 are the main gases evolved and that the CO, CO/?O2 index, and 02 absorption rate increase with decreasing rank and increasing oxygen content of the coal. In this Bureau of Mines report, the effects of temperature, moisture, and other variables are discussed together with the application of the data to the complex conditions encountered in a mining environment. An important finding is that the presence of CO alone in a mine is not necessarily an indication of a self-heating reaction of the coal. Based upon experiments conducted in an adiabatic-type calorimeter, the self-heating temperatures of lignite and subbituminous coals can be as low as 30° C, whereas the bituminous coals require a temperature of about 60° C or more. The self-heating hazard is greatest when the coals are dried and exposed to a high humidity condition, apparently as a result of the "heat-of-wetting." Generally, the hazard is greatest with the western coals of the United States.

"During the past few years, since flotation has become the paramount treatment method for most all kinds of ores, the Bureau has gathered the data on consumption of reagents used in the flotation treatment. The first report was issued in 1916. A brief review of such reports shows the progress made in the art of flotation, and each year brings forth development of new reagents or combinations of reagents that seem sure to survive, but research and progress spell their defeat, if not by entire elimination, at least subjects them to considerable modification. Fortunately, close cooperation between the Bureau and the operators has been the means of an exchange of ideas in research work, and the development, in plant practice, of such research work on a commercial basis, is one of the outstanding features in milling today.In past years flotation has been referred to generally as ""oil flotation""— today it might be more properly called ""chemical flotatioin"" Minerals can be floated today without oil. Chemicals alone will do the work, showing how little was truly known about the process heretofore. The term ""regents as used herein, includes both chemicals and oils. The total pounds of oils and reagents consumed during the year was greater than shown in the 1925 report. The 1926 total was 201,711,795 pounds as compared with 81,688,967 pounds for 1925. The equivalent in pounds of reagent use& per ton of ore for 1926 was 3.933 as compared with 1.7972 for 1925. This increase is due largely to the amount of lime which is added in the alkaline circuits particularly in the mills treating coppers ores, which accounts for the larger tonnages."

D.2 Principal Types of Coating A Sodium Silicate Sodium silicate is a good fire retarder when freshly applied, but it loses its effectiveness if the relative humidity is at all high, thus exposure to a relative humidity exceeding 65 percent causes a serious decrease in the effectiveness after only one month. In fire, sodium silicate swells to a frothy mass (intumescence) which hardens and insulates the wood against heat. This property is destroyed by exposure to moisture. Manufacturers of many of the proprietary paints containing silicates state that their products have overcome this difficulty The reagent may be applied alone, or, better, in a mixture with lime-water and common salt, or with inert fillers such as kaolin or asbestos. B Ammonium Phosphate Strong solutions (25 to 35 percent) of monammonium phosphate or diammonium phosphate give good protection. Two or three coats of hot solution should be applied either with a large flat brush or an ordinary paint spray gun The solution should be applied as hot as possible, as this improved penetration, and it should be the aim of the operator to apply 4 lbs of reagent, i e , one gallon of 33 percent solution to every 100 square feet of surface

Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the technical feasibility of separating anthracite particles from a water-anthracite slurry by atomizing the water and removing the resulting mist in an air current. Products containing 21 percent or less moisture were obtained from slurries made with minus 60-mesh anthracite. Typical recoveries ranged between 67 and 79 percent of the feed when the slurries were atomized in air currents with velocities below 70 ft/min.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Minerals Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and practices at various mines in the United States. In the soction on mining mothods, stoping and slushing are discussed, following which are descriptions of underground transportation, hoisting, ventilation, drainage and sampling, and surveying. The surface and crushing plants are described, and milling practices are presented in dotail with explanation of the filter plant and assay office. Safoty practices and the company organization are described in the concluding sections of the circular.

It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. As part of the Bureau of Mines program to develop substitute or improved performance refractory materials for metallurgical applications, the Tuscaloosa Research Center has evaluated the effect of additives on sintering and strength properties of aialon (silicon aluminum oxynitride) compositions fabricated by a conventional powder metallurgy technique. Additions of Y203, Gd203, CeO2, MgO, ZrO2, ZrSiO4, and MgA12O4 to a sialon composition containing 70 pct ß-Si3N4 + 30 pct a-A1203 increased sintered densities by as much as 50 pct over densities of undoped material. The studies also indicated that sintered densities reached a maximum between 20 and 30 mole-pct a-A1203 when a series of sialon compositions of a-Si3N4, having 6.7 to 57.9 pet a-Al203, were doped with Y203, Gd2O3, and MgO. In studies to establish the effect of the crystalline phase of the silicon nitride and alumina used, tests were made using a- and ß-Si3N4 and a- and ?-A12 03 as starting materials. The tests indicated that when using an addition of 5 wt-pct Y203, best results were obtained with a sialon composed of 74.4 mole-pct a-Si304 and 25.6 mole-pct ?-A1203. In other tests made with this sialon composition MOR values of 28,120 and 29,500 psi at 25° C, and 23,520 and 16,850 psi at 1,400° C, were obtained when doping with 5 wt-pct ZrSiO4 and ZrO2, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating a method to recover Ni, Cu, and Co from low-grade domestic laterites through reduction roasting, leaching, sol-vent extraction, and electrowinning unit operations. The objective of this research is to develop processing technology that can convert low-grade domestic deposits containing critical metals into national reserves. As a part of this research, a solvent extraction system was investigated for the extraction of nickel and copper, followed by the separation and production of suitable electrolytes. Nickel and copper were coextracted from ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquors (pH~9.5) with LIX 64N extractant in a laboratory-size mixer-settler continuous circuit. Three extraction stages resulted in >99-pct extraction of nickel, substantial copper extraction, and essentially no cobalt extraction from leach liquors. A crowd stage reduced the ammonia loading on the solvent by maximizing nickel loading. Residual ammonia was removed from the loaded solvent with a pH-controlled scrub. Nickel and copper loaded on the solvent were separated by selective stripping. Typical nickel strip circuit operation using electrolyte containing 90 grams per liter (g/l) Ni and 11.9 g/l H2S04 yielded >99.9 pct Ni stripped from the solvent in five stages. The copper loading on the recycled solvent was controlled in a copper strip stage using electrolyte containing 25 g/l Cu and 160 g/l H2S04,

Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are used in mine fire early-warning systems. Experiments were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with six diffusion-type CO sensors to determine their response to a reference CO concentration under both static and dynamic flow conditions. Static experiments were conducted with 0.5 L/min flow of 16 ppm CO in N2 through 8-and 12-L chambers. Dynamic flow experiments were conducted in two environmental chambers: One had directional flow capability of 1 m/s, and the second provided moderately nondirectional flow as high as 1.8 m/s. Reference CO concentrations of 13.5 to 19 ppm in air were used for the dynamic experiments. The results of the static experiments demonstrated that the sensors consistently underestimated the reference gas concentration. The dynamic experiment results showed the sensors provided reasonable agreement with the reference gas concentration when directional flow effects were not considered. Directional flow effects were evaluated for two sensors. One of the sensors showed a strong dependence upon the relative orientation of the diffusion tube with respect to flow direction. The second sensor did not show a dependence upon flow direction. The sensors' directional flow effect is significant for their proper in-mine utilization.

The titanium-rich end of the titanium-germanium system was investigated by x-ray and metallographic methods and verified by resistivity and dilatometer measurements. A constitution diagram is proposed. The titanium-rich portion of the phase diagram is characterized by eutectic and peritectic reactions. The eutectic composition is 19 percent germanium, and the eutectic temperature 1,360° C. The peritectic reaction occurs at 905° C. and 4 percent germanium. Germanium is soluble in alpha titanium to a maximum of 4 percent at 905° C. and in beta titanium to a maximum of 12.5 percent at 1,360° C. Both limits of solubility decrease with decreasing temperatures. Although substantial quantities of germanium are soluble in beta titanium, beta is not retained on quenching. The beta phase probably transforms to alpha by a martensitic reaction.

In 1987, 1988 and 1989, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the Sperry Creek Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-035; 5,600 acres) and the Gold Creek Wilderness Study Area (OR-003-033; 13,600 acres), plus an additional area (OR-003-033; 2,180 acres) adjacent to the Gold Creek Wilderness Study Area. The wilderness study areas and the addition are south of the Malheur River and are about 20 miles east of Juntura, Oregon. The wilderness study areas and the addition are underlain by volcanic rocks, predominantly basalt and rhyolite flows, breccias, and welded ash-flow tuffs. Lacustrine deposits containing diatomites occur mainly at the east side of the Gold Creek Wilderness Study Area and addition. Alluvium lies along the Malheur River, in terraces and fans south of the Malheur River, and along the floors of some creeks. Shear zones and faults have offset the rocks and provided channels for eruption of volcanic rocks and epithermal mineralization by hot springs.

Saturated hydrocarbons from 60 selected samples of a 2,300-foot Green River Formation oil-shale core (Piceance Creek Basin, Colo.) were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography techniques. Emphasis was placed upon the distribution of normal alkanes and 15 key-branched and cyclic alkanes. The latter compounds consisted of the C15, C16, C18, C19, and C20 chain isoprenoids, the 5-a and 5-ß C27, C28, and C29 steranes, three C30 pentacyclic triterpanes, and perhydro-ß-carotene. The results showed definite evidence of maturation of both the n-alkanes and the branched and cyclic alkanes; however, most if not all of the changes were limited to the indigenous soluble extract and were not the result of additional soluble extract generation from the insoluble kerogen. Source material and environmental variations were important factors in some of the observed differences in the branched plus cyclic alkane compositions.

The initial results from the magnetic sludge factorial experiment are summarized in Table 2. For ease in interpretation, the four separate variables are identified with the high and low level of each variable being represented by + and - signs, respectively. Several important relationships are evident from an inspection of the data in Table 2. For example, magnetic sludges were obtained only during the high temperature tests. Secondly, with the exception of the last three tests, there is an apparent correlation between settled sludge volume (or sludge settling rate) and pH. Data on residual dissolved Fee+ indicate that precipitation of iron is not complete at pH 8 and room temperature (Tests l, 3, 5, and 7). Although this should not have any confounding effect on the interpretation of the results, it is an important observation and an aspect of the overall conceptual process that should be considered carefully during any future developmental work. The data in Table 2 were employed more fully in the calculation of main effects and variable interactions for each of the three responses. For this purpose, a codified design and calculation matrix, shown in Table 3, was used. The derivation of this matrix is described by Davies.(9) The positive or negative signs for variable interactions are obtained simply by algebraic multiplication of the signs for each single variable involved in the interaction. Main effects and interactions are calculated by multiplying the response values (Table 2) by the corresponding effect elements (Table 3), summing the results, and dividing by 8. The resulting value for single variables is also sometimes designated as an average effect, since (for tyro levels of the variable only) it is simply the difference between the average response of all trials carried out at the first level of the variable (factor) and that of all trials at the second level. If the effect of one variable changes at different levels of another variable, the two variables are said to interact. The relative importance of the variable or variables in question is reflected by the absolute magnitude of the calculated main effect or interaction. First-order (two variable) interactions are usually easy to interpret in terms of the physical behavior of the system. Second- and higher-order interactions are often less readily understood, and are often of minor significance in any case. Comprehensive data on market prices for crude minerals and mineral products for the world as a whole do not exist, and even the data that are available are not necessarily compatible between countries, particularly between the market economy countries and the centrally planned economy countries. Further, it should be evident that the actual delivered price for a small quantity of any specific commodity at some point substantially removed from a production facility or a seacoast port will differ appreciably from that for a large volume of the same product at or near its production source or a major import center. Nevertheless, the regularly published prices of selected major mineral commodities in key market areas can be regarded as indicative of general world price trends.

The heats of formation of four sulfides --MnS ( alabandite ) , FeS ( hexagonal pyrrhotite ) , ZnS ( wurtzite ) , and CdS ( greenockite ) -- were determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry . The heats of formation from the metals and rhombic sulfur at 298.15 ° K are , respectively , -51.01 ± 0.19 , -23.81 ± 0.24 , -45.86 ± 0.20 , and -35.70 ± 0.30 kcal /mole . The corresponding free energies of formation were calculated from the heats of formation and the pertinent entropy values .

Mining has one of the highest annual average fatality rates among major US industries. Health and safety dangers have been inherent to mining since the early days of picks and shovels. Even though miners' health and safety has improved over the years, mining is still one of the most dangerous occupations. Mining was traditionally a low tech industry. It is now driven by competitive pressures to go high-tech by using programmable electronics (PE) for machine control, atmospheric monitoring and material processing. The industry's experience with the functional safety of PE is limited compared with other industries. Thus, PE is an emerging technology for mining that can potentially create or worsen hazards. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA is addressing the safety of this new technology. NIOSH has a proactive project to generate recommendations for addressing the functional safety of PE-based mining systems before the technology proliferates. The recommendations take the form of a safety framework encompassing the entire life cycle for a PE-based mining system.

How can employees be stopped from engaging in unsafe work practices? It is often easier to prevent employees from performing unsafe acts through manipulations of the work environment than through various training or motivational programs. Therefore, it is important that accident prevention programs seek to identify the reasons for the unsafe behavior and to redesign tasks and the work environment (e.g., tools, equipment, physical surroundings) in order to remove employees from sources of harm and to prevent situations from arising that would prompt them to perform unsafe acts. Unfortunately, in the mining industry the work environment is often innately hazardous, rapidly changing, and difficult to predict, making it very difficult, perhaps impossible, to fully protect the employee by environmental manipulations. Therefore, it is important that effective methods be identified for influencing mine employees to work safely. Various strategies have been used to convince employees to avoid unsafe acts and/or adopt self protective behaviors. The intent of this article is to provide guidance to mine operators concerning the use of four techniques for influencing mine employees to work safely: (1) employee surveys, (2) incentives, (3) fear communications, and (4) disciplinary actions.

A recently completed survey , made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the trend of fuel consumption at refineries in the United States , showed the following outstanding points : A decrease in the use of oil for fuel in 1927 of over 5,000,000 barrels as compared with 1926 ; a decrease in the use of coal of over : 1,000,000 short tons ; small increases in the use of both natural gas and refinery gas ; an increase in the use of petroleum coke . The decrease in fuel - oil consumption was approximately 2,000,000 barrels each in the Atlantic Coast , Texas , and Louisiana- Arkansas districts , with an increase of 1,000,000 barrels in the Indiana - Illinois district , or a net decrease of 5,000,000 barrels . The decrease in fuel- oil consumption by refineries in the Texas and Louisiana- Arkansas areas was offset largely by increased consumption of natural gas and refinery gas , whereas the increased consumption in the Indiana- Illinois region was more than offset by the decrease in coal consumption . The use of coal for fuel declined from 6,052,000 short tons in 1926 to 5,031,000 short tons in 1927. Practically all of this decrease was recorded in the Appalachian and Indiana- Illinois districts , which at the same time showed the largest percentage increase in the use of oil for fuel . It is probable , therefore , that although coal prices also fell off , a considerable quantity of oil replaced coal in this area in 1927. In addition , the group of refineries , which are by location more or less definitely committed to the use of coal for fuel , undoubtedly succeeded in saving a material amount of coal through the use of more efficient fueling methods . A total of 130,815,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas was consumed for fuel at refineries in 1927. This represents an increase of 8 per cent over the 1926 total . Nearly all of this increase resulted from the opening of a line from the Monroe field to Baton Rouge , La . Had this line not been opened , there would have been a decrease in the use of natural gas , as a number of districts , particularly the Rocky Mountain , reported decreases in its use . The use of refinery or still gases for fuel did not change materially during 1927 , there being a total of 52,807,000,000 cubic feet burned as compared with 52,077,000,000 cubic feet in 1926. Refinery gases are largely a product of cracking and , it was probably more than a coincidence that a few districts in which cracking slowed down in 1927 also reported less refinery gas used as fuel .
