The Bureau of Mines has collected field data and made laboratory investigations of trailing- cable performance in the hope of developing a better and safer cable for use with permissible mining machines . Because of their better insulation and performance , only rubber- sheathed cables were finally considered . The cables tested represented the product of six manufacturers . : After consideration of the results of the preliminary investigations , the conditions under which cables are used in mines , and the better performance of the later types of cables that were submitted as the investigation progressed , the bureau formulated a performance - test requirement and notified the cable manufacturers as follows : The hazards of the trailing cable are such that the bureau has been unable to extend beyond the machine its formal approval to cover the cable as at present developed . However , in the attempt to reduce the hazard as much as possible , cables passing certain tests will be recommended for this service and it is hoped that several cables will be developed to meet this requirement .

Develop a new method for coal mint pillar stability evaluation and design based on pillar load measurements. Approach A novel approach to chain pillar stability evaluation and design for longwall coal mining panels has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The evaluation approach uses an INTEGRITY FACTOR as the criterion for stability. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells developed by the Bureau are used to measure stresses in a pillar for stability evaluation. The results are used to improve the pillar design.

A package of bench design programs is being publicly released by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). These programs are designed to provide a probabilistic estimate of the likelihood that various widths of catch bench will be retained. Program modules address the mechanisms of plane, plane step path, and wedge failure. Results are drawn from statistical and geostatistical descriptions of fracture characteristics and other input parameters, and reported as the statistical chance that a given width of catch bench will survive, that is, that a catch bench will remain wide enough to catch rolling and sliding material and prevent such material from posing hazards to miners operating below. The capabilities and application of this software are demonstrated through a case example. Comparing bench width estimates obtained using geologic data with actual widths is a key step in verifying that a program is appropriate for particular site conditions and that proper statistical descriptions of fracture parameters for that site have been developed. Such verification efforts improve confidence, and hence usefulness, of this method for designing future slope benches. Development and release of these programs appears particularly timely given recent progress in photoanalysis methods, which promise to greatly reduce the cost of collecting fracture data.

A cooperative research effort was established between the Tilden Mining Company LC, the United Steelworkers of America, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to lower respirable dust levels in an iron ore grinding and concentrator plant. This cooperative effort involved three field studies to evaluate different techniques to lower respirable dust levels. The greatest impact on lowering respirable dust concentrations throughout this facility was achieved through ventilation changes. The most significant improvement was realized by changing the ventilation profile throughout the entire facility. The ventilation to this grinding and concentrator facility was provided by approximately 40 roof fans operating in either the intake or exhaust mode. The operation of these fans was significantly changed in an attempt to pro-vide more of a directional flow pattern throughout the facility, as well as to more closely balance the intake and exhaust air volume. This change accounted for a 31 pct reduction in respirable dust levels in the primary grinding area of the mill. Another successful modification was to improve the sealing of a reclaim tunnel to the outside and by barricading the access point from the reclaim tunnel to the concentrator plant. This minimized the dust liberated in the conveyor tunnels from traveling through the reclaim tunnel and into the plant. These two modifications illustrate the impact that improvements in ventilation can have on lowering respirable dust concentrations in iron ore processing facilities.

As the use of electricity becomes more and more general in mining opera- tions, interest in regulations governing its application becomes greater. During the past year the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines has made a study of State regulations now in force relating to the use of electricity in coal mines. Technical Paper 271, entitled "State Mining Laws on the Use of Electricity in and about Coal Mines", has been published as a result of this study. The present paper represents a compilation of all laws relating to accident prevention with respect to electrical circuits. This group of regulations is perhaps the most important of any that relate to safety in coal mines. Its importance is shown by reference to accident statistics in Bulletin 115, (Fay, A.H., Coal-Mine Fatalities in United States, 1870-1914, Bureau of Mines, 1916), which show that about 77 per cent of the fatalities due to electricity in and about coal mines were caused by direct or indirect contact with trolley or other power circuits. In actual number this means that of 710 men killed by electricity, 546 were killed by contact with electric wires. Undoubtedly, a large percentage of these accidents might have been prevented had the wires been properly guarded. The compilation follows:

Avoid errors in determining the amount of trace elements in overburden when core drilling samples, particularly as required by PL 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. Develop a user-friendly, personal computer-based numerical modeling program that performs structural analyses of underground tabular deposits, making these readily available to the mining industry. Background When ore is extracted from an underground mine, the overburden weight is redistributed to unmined areas, recompacted gob zones, and artificial structures such as packwalls and/or cribs. This redistribution of stresses continually changes throughout the mining cycle and can be especially complicated when multiple-seam mining is involved. Numerical mine structural analysis methods provide a way of calculating the redistribution of overburden stresses and the resulting loading for any given area of an underground mine, thus enabling engineers to design safer and more productive mines. In 1973 Crouch and Fairhurst developed a mine structural analysis computer program called MINSIM. This computer program was based on the three-dimensional displacement-discontinuity approach, a subvariation of the boundary-element method. In 1979 Sinha expanded MINSIM's capability to provide an analysis of parallel multiple seams. Sinha called his program MULSIM. During 1984 and 1985, the Bureau of Mines upgraded and completely restructured MULSIM into what is now called MULSIM/BM.

"An Arizona mining company recently demonstrated a new use for the geophone by successfully locating leaks in compressed-air lines which were buried under from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 feet of fine rock fill. The following information is abstracted from data sent to the Bureau of Mines by the superintendent of the mine.The company has two parallel main compressed-air lines, about one and one-half miles long, buried under an average of two feet of fine rock fill. One of the lines is a four-inch high-pressure (1000 pounds) main, and the other line a ten-inch low pressure (90 pounds) main. The two mains are separated by a 10 to 3C foot interval, and run from the compressor plant to the No. 2 shaft, where they are taken underground. A pump line is also buried in the immediate vicinity.Several leaks, not audible enough to be located, were developed in the Alms. Various =Abode were suggested that did not seem practicable to the management. Finally, the company obtained a Bureau of Mines' geophone and experimented with it. The first test& were conducted while the pumps were running, and while there was noise on the concrete pavement, all of Which caused so much vibration in the geophone that it was impossible to detect the leaks.The second attempt was made at the close of the day shift when the compressors were not operating and when the pumps could be shut down. The valves in the far end of the surface lines were closed, and the lines were pumped to full pressure (90 and 1,000 pounds respectively).Geophone readings were then taken at 7 or 8 foot intervals directly see the lines. Several leaks some very large in the high-pressure line were audible with the geophone at distances varying from 15 to 30 feet. A con-le leak in the low-pressure line was found at a distance of 10 feet. detecting the leaks, no difficulty was found in locating them exactly. Apply state-of-the-art monitoring and computer systems technology to remotely monitor geostructural data and evaluate ground conditions in near real-time. Background Recently, the coal mining industry has progressed dramatically from a labor-intensive industry to highly mechanized and automated systems achieving significantly higher production rates. In underground longwall coal mines, production and face advance rates have increased by almost tenfold in the last 15 to 20 years. With increasingly high advance rates, geologic anomalies which affect rock mass quality are encountered more frequently, far exceeding the current rate at which ground control information can be processed and analyzed. As a result, mine operators find themselves with insufficient time or resources to cope with the rapidly changing ground conditions. To keep up with the technological advancement in mining and the associated ground control problems, the Bureau of Mines is conducting a multi-phase research pro¬gram to implement a computer-assisted Ground Control Management System (GCMS). Research is ongoing at present, but when completed the system will be designed to 1) monitor and evaluate data on rock properties, geologic conditions, and rock mechanics data from underground sensors in near real-time; 2) interpret the analyses to evaluate the interaction between various critical ground control parameters; 3) assess the structural integrity of the mine; and 4) determine failure modes and provide recommendations for control measures, design modifica¬tions, and alternative support procedures. The system will be expanded into its full capability during various phases of this research program.

A training software package for new mine employees, called Miner Training Simulator (MTS), has been developed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. MTS is a computer-based tool that allows a trainee to enter a simulated mine and interact with his/her surroundings in order to learn basic mining concepts, safety procedures, mine layouts, and escape routes. The training simulator software and instructions for its use are described in this report. Also, each mine using the software will have different requirements with regard to safety training. To customize the simulator for these differences, an interpreted scripting language is used to define interactions between the trainee and the virtual mine and objects in it. The scripting language, called Tool Command Language, uses simple commands to control various actions in the simulation, such as sounds, safety messages, hazards, and movement of objects. The basics of the scripting language are described here, along with many examples and instructions for building a script for MTS.

The Bureau of Mines performed a pilot study examining the effects of posture on back strength and Maximum Acceptable Weight of Lift (MAWL) on six healthy male subjects (M = 32 years + 4 SD). Six hack strength measurements (3 static and 3 dynamic) were made while the subjects were kneeling and standing. In addition, these subjects (who were unaccustomed to lifting in these postures) volunteered to participate in a study of psychophysically determined NAWL in both postures. Results of the back strength tests showed a significantly lower peak torque per body weight output in kneeling versus standing hack strength measurements for five out of six test comparisons (p < .05). Subjective estimates of lifting capacity in the kneeling posture were significantly lower than those for the stooped posture (p < .05). The results of tests of hack strength and lifting capacity in these two postures provide useful information to consider in determining the physiological and psychophysical stresses imposed by these

The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines&apos; requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. Nevertheless, these measurements are important since the same perturbations would also affect a receiving loop oriented to receive the vertical magnetic field. Dr. Rankin pointed

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER WORK Based on the development effort and full-scale tests conducted during this program, a number of technical areas for future research and development have been identified. Further work in these areas would help to improve the reliability, speed of operation and efficiency of the remote sealing system. Recommendations for future work are summarized as follows 1. Development of an Inert Gas Generator For the sake of expediency in conducting the field test program, fresh air was used as the fluidizing medium for the fly ash. However, in an actual mine fire application the use of fresh air is likely to be prohibited. An inert gas, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or air containing less than 8 percent oxygen would be required. Using combustion as a means of reducing the oxygen content of air appears to be an attractive solution to the generation of the high flow rates of gas required (2500 to 5000 scfm). Such an inert gas generator would serve a dual purpose for the overall fire extinguishing operation. First, it would provide the inert gas for fluidizing the fly ash. Second, it could be used for inerting the fire area after the seals had been placed, thereby reducing the time required to extinguish the fire. It is recommended that the Bureau undertake a program to develop a field-operable, inert gas generator to satisfy these two requirements. 2. "The Bureau of Mines, in its investigations of as masks for use in mines and allied industries tests masks that are voluntarily submitted by manufacturers for examination, and issues approval certificates for masks that meet the bureau's specifications. This paper describes the tests that were conducted on an ammonia gas mask by the Bureau of Mines, which successfully met all requirements and tests for ammonia, masks. The mask tested, known as the GMD ammonia gas mask, is manufactured by the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. This ammonia gas mask, which forms a pocket over the face and allows breathing through the nose, consists of a face-piece with non-shatter eyeglasses; this is attached by means of a corrugated rubber tube to a canister supported on wearer's chest by a harness. The canister is green in color and is of tinplate construction. It was a disc valve at the bottom to prevent exhalation through the canister. The filling of the canister consists of a specially impregnated activated charcoal, about 750 c.c. in volume and weighing about 520 grunn. The material is supported above the check valve by a dome of wire screen covered with toweling. Above the granular material is a filter of absorbent cotton screens, and all materials are hold firmly in place by pressure from strong"

The quantity of methane emitted into the mine atmosphere and the movement of gas through solid coal and the adjoining country rock are dependent on the physical properties of the medium, boundary con¬ditions, the initial gas pressure distribution, and the combination of natural and mining factors. Functional relationships between these factors are not yet known. Consequently, the development of rigorous mathematical models to predict methane flow into the mine air is difficult and to date no model has been reported which is capable of such a function. Thus far, empirical formulas available for the calculation of gas quantity released from underground sources require too much his¬torical data, not currently available. Again, these estimations are at best only crudely approximate. The numerical methods available have not been made practical enough for industry wide application. Therefore, the development of a relationship amenable to numerical analysis and practical enough for use in the industry would provide the flexibility lacking in analytical approaches. The mathematical models given in equations (7) and (8) are further attempts in presenting practical models for predicting the quantity of methane emission into the mine environment. Equation (7) is the steady state model and equation (8) is the unsteady state model.

A survey of roof and pillar conditions in underground limestone mines in the United States has revealed that bench mining of the floor between pillars can cause instability in the pillars at the perimeter of the benched area. Increased loading of these pillars was observed at several mines. Large inclined geological structures that are exposed in pillar ribs were observed to contribute to pillar instability. The paper describes a study that was carried out using numerical models to assess the effects of bench mining on pillar load and stability. It was found that the benched pillars shed load onto the surrounding pillars owing to their reduced stiffness. The pillars at the perimeter of the benching area will start shedding load as soon as benching increases the height of one side of the pillar. A case study is described which shows the effects of bench mining on limestone mine pillars.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for blasthole drills. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system using both dry and gaseous chemicals was developed, and is more shock and vibration resistant than similar industrial fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted in the drill&apos;s machinery house, hydraulic room, operator cab, and transformer area detect the heat from a fire, and trigger a sequence of actions. The same fire fighting sequence can be initiated from manual alarm boxes in the cab, hydraulic room, or machinery house. Electrical power to the drill Is immediately cut off, and a horn sounds to warn the drilling crew. After a 40-second, built-in, delay to allow time for drill&apos;s ventilating fan to stop, gaseous and dry chemical fire extinguishing agents are piped to and released in various rooms of the drill. The gaseous extinguishing agent (Halon 1301) is released in the machinery house, hydraulic room, and operator cab where dry chemical clean-up from electrical panels and machinery would be difficult and costly. Dry chemical is piped to the transformer room at the rear of the machine. Location of the principal components of the system are shown in the drawing.
