A numerical approach for modeling coupled Hydro-Mechanical fracture behavior in 2D is presented in this paper. This approach accounts for the strong dependence of the flow characteristics on fracture apertures and offers an anisotropic description of the flow propagation in the fracture. An interface finite element and a constitutive model are developed . In order to validate the applicability of the model to general geomechanic problems, 2D simulations were performed. Results show the good application of the mathematical model and the fundamental hydraulic role played by the fractures. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Stoffgesetz vorgeschlagen um hydromechanisches Kluftverhalten numerisch zu Modellieren. Dieser Vorgang nimmt die starke Abhängigkeit der Fliesseigenschaften von der Kluftöffnung mit in Anbetracht. Ein Interfaceelement und ein Stoffgesetz wurden entwickelt. Zum validieren der Anwendbarkeit dieses Modells wurden 2D Simulationen durchgeführt. Ergebnisse haben gezeigt dass das mathematische Model anwendbar ist und dass Klüfte eine fundamentale hydraulische Rolle spielen. Une approche numérique pour la modélisation du comportement couplé hydro-mécanique des fractures en 2D est présentée dans ce papier. Cette approche prend en compte la forte dépendance des caractéristiques du flux de fluide sur les ouvertures des fractures et présente une description anisotrope de la propagation du flux dans la fracture. Un élément fini d'interface et un modèle constitutif sont développés. Dans le but de valider l'applicabilité du modèle à des problèmes généraux de géomécanique, des simulations 2D ont été réalisées. Les résultats montrent la bonne application du modèle mathématique et le rôle hydraulique fondamental joué par les fractures.

A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. Ein großer Keildefekt geschah in dem Untersuchungsgebiet, das im Bau befindlich ist. Deshalb, um die potentielle Unbeständigkeit für diesen Felsenabhang zu analysieren, führen die Urheber zahlenmäßige Analyse mit DEM. Und dann wird die Bewegung der Felsenmasse ana-lysiert, nachdem angemessene Verstärkungstruppen angewandt werden. Un grand échec de coin sèst passé dans le région étudié qui était en construction. Par conséquent afin d’analyser linstabilité potentielle de cette pente de roches, les auteurs ont mené une analyse numérique avec DEM. "One of the most useful approaches to a complex problem is to model the system which gives rise to the problem and to perform simulations through the model to find appropriate solutions. The Engel Model may be used as such a simulator to investigate the problem of the exploration for natural resources.The Engel Model is based on a two-stage search procedure in which a known area (A) which contains m prizes is subjected to search by n coverings. During the first-stage search the sensor system records signals which may be a response from prizes (that is, true signals) or may be false. Signals tend to cluster around a prize and a cluster size consists of s signals. If a circle of radius R is drawn around each signal some will overlap and the overlap from s signals contains a prize. The cost of a single covering in which each point of the area comes under observation once, is designated E1. Second-stage detailed search is expensive and is confined to areas of overlap of s circles; it leads to the location of prizes. Second-stage search of the whole area costs Ea units. The expected value, V, of a prize is known and its development cost is E3 units.The sensor system characteristics are defined by the circle of radius R around a signal, which should be small compared with the total area A and enters the model as a parameter a x R2/A. The probability of a false signal during a single covering of a circle of radius I is a known constant, A.This model was applied to the search for uranium ore bodies using two different types of occurrence. In the first, the Wyoming Basin type, the area is relatively large (A = 1 496 square miles) and a few (m = 4) large prizes occur (expected value V = $30 million). In the second area, which represents the Ambrosia Lake region of New Mexico, the area is smaller (A = 212 square miles) and contains many (m = 200) smaller prizes (expectedvalue of a prize V,$2 million). The three costs, E1, E2, E3, are adjusted to the different circumstances in the two areas.Simulations were performed using n = 1 to 40 coverings with cluster sizes s = 0 to 19; the radius R was varied from 0.52 to 3 miles (and, therefore, a = 0.002 to 0.133 0, respectively, dependent on the area of interest). The value of A was varied from 0.01 to 0.10.Profitable programs were found over a wide range of the parameters; the two areas required different strategies to achieve maximum profit. In the Ambrosia Lake region a few passes (n = 4 to 6) with small cluster sizes (s = 2 to 6) are more profitable, whereas in the Wyoming Basin region a large number of passes (n = 35 to 40) and cluster sizes of s = 5 to 10 are most profitable.As pointed out by Allais (1957) the larger prizes are the most important in deciding the successful outcomes of exploration programs, and the profit margin in the search for a few large prizes is sufficient to yield success over a wide range of programs. Such programs require very large investments if they are to be successful.To refine the Engel Simulator as a decision-maker in selecting the most profitable exploration programs it is necessary to obtain firm estimates of the sensor system characteristics, that is, of R, a and ? (lambda)."

This paper develops the themes explored by the authors at the Fourth International Platinum Conference,. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: > An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated > An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter, and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets > An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated > An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the owner's team.

Born in Bothaville (OFS) on the 26th August 1919, Daniel G. Krige grew up in Krugersdorp on the West Rand. Hematriculated from Monument High School in Krugersdorpin 1934 at the age of 15 and graduated with a B.Sc. (Eng.)degree in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand at the end of 1938 (age 19). In 1938 he joined Anglo Transvaal where he worked on a number of gold mines until 1943, gaining a wide range of valuable practical experience in surveying, sampling and ore valuation. He then joined the Government Mining Engineer’s Department where he worked for 8 years during which time he participated in the uranium negotiations with the British and American authorities and designed the uranium pricing formula for the contracts which led to the establishment of South Africa's profitable uranium industry in the early 1950s. During the same period he began his pioneering work in the application of mathematical statistics to the valuation of new gold mines using a limited number of boreholes and of ore reserves for existing mines. His early papers in the application of mathematical statistics, some republished in French, created world-wide interest that led to the development of the science and concepts that surround the spatial evaluation of mineral resources and reserves known as geostatistics. This technique has contributed to improved ore evaluation techniques as well as the reduction of the financial risks associated with investment in mining enterprises. Furthermore, it led to the recognition of his contributions to the evaluations of mineral deposits through the coining of the term ‘kriging’ that is used to describe a spatial mineral evaluation process known and practised in international mining circles. He continued his work in geostatistics throughout his career as Group Financial Engineer of the Anglovaal Group until his retirement in1981 and afterwards for ten years as Professor of Mineral Economics at the Witwatersrand University. He is still active as a consultant and is a registered Professional Engineer. He has published some 90 technical papers both locally and overseas, some in Russia, and has lectured and participated in international congresses in many countries. His contributions were recognized by the Witwatersrand University through the award of the D.Sc. (Eng.) degree in1963, by three honorary degrees (from the universities of Pretoria, UNISA and Moscow State Mining University), by many awards from the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the International Association for Mathematical Geology, Die Suid Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns, the SME of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the International APCOM Council in1999, the University of Antofagasta in Chile, and by the South African President (Order for Meritorious Service, Class 1, Gold). He has served on various Government committees, notably that for State Aid for gold mines (1967/8) and designed the State Aid formula which enabled many mines to survive a period of low gold prices; also various taxation committees, and the mining mission to Iran in 1974. He is a fellow and/or honorary life member of various technical societies locally and overseas, including the Royal Society of South Africa. During the period in the Government service he also handled several of the post-war lease applications in the Free State and Klerksdorp goldfields. The fact that decisions on new gold mines of critical importance to the State and the economy as a whole, were being taken on a limited number of drillholes without any scientific analysis of the risks of failure, stimulated him to start basic research into ore evaluation. His approach was based on the application of Mathematical Statistics to these problems, an approach of which very little was known world-wide at that stage but which had already been initiated in South Africa by Sichel via the lognormal frequency distribution model. In Krige's 1951 paper published in the Journal of the Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa he covered the statistical explanation of the conditional biases in ore block valuations and stimulated the use by several gold mines of regression corrections for routine ore reserve valuations, a technique which, in effect, was the first use on an elementary basis of what is now known as kriging. His 1952 paper introduced, inter alia the basic geostatistical concepts of ‘support’, ‘spatial structure’,’ selective mining units’ and ‘grade-tonnage curves’. His 1951 paper was based on his M.Sc. (Eng.) thesis submitted in the Department of Mining Engineering to the University of the Witwatersrand, and expounded his pioneering work in geostatistics in more detail. His early research papers that had stimulated interest in several mining circles overseas, were republished in French in1955, resulting in a major research effort by French mining engineers in this field. This, in turn, led to the establishment of the now world-renowned French school of ore evaluation in Fontainebleau, Le Centre de Geostatistique de l’École des Mines de Paris. The two components of pillar design formula being used in South Africa are pillar strength and pillar load. While considerable effort has been directed to the determination of pillar strength, the other half of the safety factor equation, the load, has not received the same amount of attention. The load acting on pillars has always been calculated using the Tributary Area Theory (TAT). This paper summarises the recent studies on coal pillar loading using various numerical models. It concludes that although there are meaningful differences under certain circumstances, there is still a compelling argument to use the TAT in coal pillar design. Les deux parties composantes de la formule de conception de pilier généralement utilisée en Afrique du Sud sont la résistance de pilier et la charge de pilier. Tandis que des efforts considérables on été dirigés vers la détermination de la résistance de pilier, l’autre moitié du facteur de sécurité n’a pas reçu la même attention. La charge agissant sur les piliers a toujours été calculée avec la Théorie d’Aire Tributaire (TAT). L’étude présente résume les études récentes sur la charge de pilier de charbon utilisant des modèles numériques variés. La conclusion est que bien qu’il y ait des différences significatives selon les circonstances, il y a toujours un argument puissant pour utiliser le TAT dans la conception de pilier de charbon. Die in Südafrika für die Auslegung von Pfeilern verwendeten zwei Formelkomponenten sind Pfeilerstärke und Pfeilerbelastung. Während beträchtlicher Aufwand zur Bestimmung der Pfeilerstärke gemacht wurde, wurde der anderen Hälfte der Sicherheitsfaktorsgleichung nicht die gleiche Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Die auf die Pfeiler wirkende Last wurde immer unter Verwendung der Tributary Area Theory (TAT) berechnet. Diese Arbeit fast neuere Studien betreffend der Belastung von Kohlepfeilern unter Verwendung verschiedener numerischer Modelle zusammen. Die Schlussfolderung ist, daß obwohl unter bestimmten Vorraussetzungen bedeutende Unterschiede existieren, nach wie vor ein bezwingendes Argument besteht TAT in der Kohlepfeilerauslegung zu verwenden.

The limiting criterion in the use of stainless steel for certain forming operations such as coining is its hardness, which determines parameters such as required striking pressure, wear on dies, and integrity of pattern detail. Attention is given here to the development of ultra-soft ferritic stainless steels for coinage. In the first instance, the influence of carbon content on the striking properties of a series of commercial and experimental 17%Cr alloys was evaluated. It was found that a lower carbon content permitted the striking of relatively highly profiled and intricate patterns, provided that the hardness did not exceed 125 HV. Hardnesses as low as 115 HV were achieved in the fully annealed condition, but these alloys required high striking pressures. In a further study, three grades of experimental 14%Cr ferritic stainless steels were produced with a view to optimizing the ductility. When the residual impurities were minimized, hardness values of about 100 HV and lower were achieved. Micro-alloying additions allowed the heat-treatment response and grain size to be controlled. Excellent tensile properties, with elongations of up to 42 per cent, were achieved in the fuly annealed condition, and highly profiled patterns were produced in coining trials.

Experimental studies on viscosity of titanium bearing slags have been reviewed and the assessed data were used in extending the capability of the structurally related viscosity model for silicate melts, developed by the present authors. Experimental data on ternary and higher order systems containing CaO, MgO, MnO, FeO, Al2O3, TiO2, Ti2O3, SiO2were assessed and used. The newly extended viscosity model represented the viscosity behaviour over broad temperature and composition ranges. The structural role played by TiO2and Ti2O3in silicate network structure is discussed with respect to their effect on viscosity of melts. This article outlines various projects implemented at Rand Refinery to reduce effluent generation and freshwater consumption. The refinery generates about 2800 m³ of effluent annually and has initiated projects such as granulation water recycle and silver leach optimisation to address these issues. The granulation water recycle project has successfully reduced effluent volumes, while the silver leach optimisation has further decreased effluent by implementing stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3. The vibratory shear enhanced processing (VSEP) trial showed promising results for gold recovery from wastewater, though further trials are recommended. The water savings of the effluent reduction projects are monitored by measuring the amount of effluent pumped to service yard effluent storage facilities with the use of flow meters connected on SCADA. Since the effluent reduction initiative of granulation effluent recycle in FY23, the effluent reduced to 2676 m³. In FY24, the stoichiometric addition of HCl and NaClO3 was implemented in the silver leach process, further reducing the effluent to 2083 m³.

The minerals sector continues to draw attention from policy makers who would want to see both old and new mineral projects add value to the minerals in the host country. The current technological development in the leaching of manganese oxide ores to produce a high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate, a compound that is used in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles or long-life storage cells for the renewable energy market, has led to junior mining companies spearheading this technology in new projects across the globe. In this paper, we researched the high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate project pipeline and used projected production volumes and C1 cash costs to construct the industry supply curve for six projects, including the K.Hill project owned by Giyani Metals Corporation near Kanye, in the southern part of Botswana. The aim was to determine the ideal conditions that would provide a comparative advantage for further local value addition to high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate and to the end user product. The results showed that while the estimated C1 cash costs would place the K.Hill project as the second highest cost producer from among five projects, it would nonetheless have healthy profit margins due to the high projected price of high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate. The study recommended policy options, which, if implemented, could further encourage the exploitation and value addition of battery metals in Botswana.

Accurate determination of platinum group metals (PGMs) and gold (Au) has always proven to be a difficult task, due to their low concentrations in platiniferous ores. The most common preconcentration technique used in analysis of these metals is fire assay with a flux containing nickel or lead. This technique can be improved by using co-collectors. Here we hypothesise that Fe, Co, and Cu can be used as co-collectors to enhance separation and preconcentration of PMGs and gold by fire assay. To test this hypothesis, geological exploration samples from Siyanda Union Mine (Northam, South Africa) were analysed by an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) for PGMs (Pt, Pd, and Rh) and Au. A control sample (certified reference material AMIS 0426) was also analysed by the same technique. The PGM and Au recoveries from the control sample ranged from 83% to 105% for all three co-collectors, with relative standard deviations less than 10% for the control sample and 7% for the geological samples. The PGM and Au recoveries by Fe and Co co-collectors were modestly higher than that of the Cu-collector. These results indicate that Fe and Co are better co-collectors than Cu, presumably due to the loss of analyte when using Cu. Taken together, Fe and Co co-collectors can be viable alternatives for analysis of PGMs and gold using the fire assay method.

The economic upheaval of COVID-19 forced companies to invest in emerging technologies to aid recovery. One such technology is extended reality, which is becoming a mature and innovative tool. Early adopters are seeing significant benefits in learning, training, immersive data visualization, and remote assistance. In South Africa, the mining industry is increasingly interested in using extended reality to optimize and innovate operations. The Minerals Council of South Africa's July 2021 report highlighted the potential of extended reality's to achieve zero-harm production and modernize the industry. However, the extent of extended reality adoption in mining remains unclear due to limited information on its usage. This study addressed this gap by distributing an online survey to assess awareness, knowledge, and current uses of extended reality in South Africa’s mining sector. The results indicated that virtual and augmented reality had the highest levels of awareness and usage, primarily for learning and training. Mixed reality, however, had the lowest awareness and knowledge levels. In terms of applications, visualization and remote assistance had the least use cases. These findings highlight that the South African mining industry is deficient in its understanding and use of extended reality technologies. Without better awareness and application, the South African industry risks missing out on the full benefits of extended reality. The study underlines the need for the South African mining industry to improve its outlook on extended reality technologies to fully leverage their potential applications and benefits.

"From 2010, the dolomite concentration in the ore fed to the Usoke Plant increased, resulting in a significant increase in the gangue acid consumption and Mg build-up in the circuit, and thus an increase in the Mg:Co ratio in the plant solutions. This affected the Co salt grade, reagent consumption, filtration and drying capacity. Efforts were put in place to minimise the acid consumption and consequently the Mg dissolution (such as use of pre-diluted acid), but the benefits were negligible. Various efforts were then initiated by CHEMAF to improve the cobalt plant productivity (quantity and quality) by process changes, dual precipitation and seed recycle. The positive results obtained in the laboratory were successfully implemented on plant scale. A change in the process from a single-stage precipitation with Na2CO3 to dual precipitation using a combination of Na2CO3 and NaOH improved the capacity of the Co salt filtration by 30%, the Co salt grade and drying capacity by 50%, and reduced the reagent consumption by 22%. Implementation of precipitate seed recycle increased Mg rejection by 40%, improving the Co salt grade from 20% to 25%, and yielding a further drop in reagent consumption. INTRODUCTION CHEMAF (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2003. The Usoke hydrometallurgical plant treats the Cu-Co ore from the Etoile pit to produce Cu cathodes via a leach–solvent-extraction (SX)–electrowinning (EW) circuit and Co salt via a selective precipitation process. The plant was designed to treat run-of-mine (ROM) ore grading 6% Cu and 1.5% Co; but, in 2008, due to a decline in grades, a heavy-media separation (HMS) plant was commissioned to enrich the low-grade ROM (3.5% Cu and 0.5% Co) up to 8% Cu and 1% Co before feeding it to the hydrometallurgical plant. Co is recovered by precipitation of Fe and Al with limestone, followed by Co precipitation as Co carbonate using sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as soda ash. 85% of the final effluent from cobalt precipitation is recycled back to the plant as process water; the balance, 15%, is bled out and compensated for by fresh water top up to control and retard the rate of sodium sulfate build up."

This paper examines innovation in relation to the availability of anew material: the metal titanium. The paper aims to highlight the need for the inclusion of entrepreneurial innovation as a necessary focus area in the development of a titanium metal value chain. Both the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) have identified the creation of titanium metals production capabilities as a key growth area for South Africa. Using historical literature as a source of data, the activities of selected innovators who used titanium metal as a central component in their success, were investigated. The origin of the process innovation behind the titanium metals industry, and two titanium product innovations: namely, medical implants and sporting goods, were detailed as case studies. It was found that individual innovators were responsible for the creation, and rapid growth, of the titanium industry and titanium product applications. There is a need to link the current research and development into titanium metals production with individuals and organizations capable of commercializing innovative processes and products.

There is currently limited knowledge concerning South African coal deposits as hosts for rare earth elements (REE). This project aims to determine the concentration of REE, including yttrium and scandium (REY+Sc) in various coal seams and adjacent sediments in borehole cores from the Ermelo, Witbank, and Waterberg coalfields in South Africa. Coal petrography (maceral count and vitrinite reflectance), XRD, XRF, sequential chemical extraction procedure (SCEP) before ICPMS, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) were conducted on the coal and associated sediment samples. The coals were inertinite-rich, medium-rank bituminous coal, with moderate to high ash content. The two dominant minerals in all the coalfields are kaolinite and quartz, except for sample ZBS2M, where dolomite was dominant. The dominant major oxides are Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, and CaO, which concur with the XRD results. The ICP-MS results following SCEP indicated that both coal and the associated sediments were light REY+Sc dominant. There was also an elevation of medium REY+Sc in the Witbank coal’s associated sediment samples. Notably, the samples with the highest REY+Sc results were the sediment samples. The Waterberg samples had the lowest REY+Sc from both the coal (less than 2 μg/g to 7 μg/g) and associated sediments (2 μg/g to 15 μg/g). While the highest REY+Sc was yielded from the Witbank-associated sediments (500 μg/g to 2,500 μg/g). The carbonate fraction step proved to be the most successful leaching step, as most REY+Sc was recovered in that step for all coalfields. In addition to the carbonate fraction, the silicates and sulfide fraction in the Witbank samples, and the ion-exchangeable fraction for the Waterbergassociated sediments samples proved successful in leaching out the REY+Sc. MLA determined that monazite and xenotime in all the coal samples were the REY+Sc-bearing minerals.

At the outset may I express my sincere appreciation to the organisers of this Congress for their kind invitation to me to participate in the plenary session. May I also thank the CMMI for inviting me to be their fifth distinguished lecturer. This is a signal honour and one which is sincerely appreciated by my Group and myself. The subject of gold is a very emotive one. It conjures up different images in the minds of a wide variety of people. For many of us it is very simply the ultimate metal. In ancient times gold was sought after and treasured; it was the chosen metal for adornment and many of the best preserved artefacts of that time were hand-fashioned from gold which had been won by primitive mining techniques. Gold's rarity and its value was recognised by those who fashioned the earliest gold coins thus underlining gold's special place as a store of value.

The fourth Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has just been installed in Australia, and trials have been run in many sites. There is a growing recognition of the potential advantages of using TBS technology to treat coal in the ?3+0.25 mm size range, at cut points below 1.60. From these activities, there has been a substantial growth in knowledge with respect to application engineering and operational functions. The paper briefly describes the installations, including flowsheets, and so provides a background to the potential deployment of TBS technology. There are a large number of potential applications for TBS technology, including treatment of fine ROM coal in new plants, or in upgrade situations for re-processing of spiral product, or scavenging coal from coarse tailings. As well, cost effective capacity upgrades are possible by using TBS units for treating the sands size fraction. Issues arising from Australian TBS installations and application engineering are also discussed.

"The Zambian copper mining industry as we know it today had its genesis in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production rising to a peak of 769 000 t in 1969, providingover 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 t. An average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000.Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and after more than US$12 billion investment, production levels increased year-on-year to a peak of 763 000 t in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000.This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support for other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings, and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies, and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing. Suggestions are proposed on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

Zinc or, a zinc refinery in South Africa, uses oxygen enrichment of up to 26% O2 in its fluidizing air to increase concentrate-throughput in its fluidized bed roasters. The aim of the study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining concentrate throughput rates and calcine quality. A laboratory scale fluidized roaster was used to determine the strength and oxidation kinetics of suitable micro-pellets. The strength of the pellets was determined by the extent of attrition during roasting. It was found that micro-pelletization decreases the fines in the feed to the roasters; the ?500 µm fraction decreased from 87% to 10%. The micro-pelletized particles do break down during roasting, which increases the -500 µm fraction to 31%. The general morphologies of the roasted particles are similar to those found by previous workers. Micro-pelletized concentrate particles require more time than non-pelletized concentrate particles to oxidize in the roasting step, although this is less than the mean residence time of the Zincor roasters. Roasting micro-pellets in O2-enriched fluidizing air increased the reaction rate.
