Traditional fire assay dates back over 3000 years and has changed very little over that time. The only improvement is to replace the gravimetric finish with dissolution of the Precious Metal bead followed by AA or ICP analysis of the solution. The newly developed FIP A (Fast In-line Fire Assay) method allows full automation of the fire assay process from sample preparation to spark analysis of the Pb button. This results in fully quantitative analyses for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, lr, Au and Ag in typically less than an hour after a sample is entered into the system. Detection limits are theoretically Pt 0.08 ppm, Pd 0.002 ppm, Rh 0.002 ppm, Au 0.08 ppm and Ag 0.002 ppm but in practice the lower measurable limits are about double these figures. Few opportunities have been available to present data obtained using the FIFA system as all FIFA laboratories have been in the domain of a Pt mining company which prefers to keep all Pt analytical matters confidential. However, IMP has recently participated in the round robin exercise to establish recommended values for a new series of Merensky Reef and UO-2 Layer reference materials produced by African Mineral Standards. The precision of the results was excellent being on average Pt 2.05%, Pd 1.25%, Rh 4.08% and Ru 4.94% being expressed as Relative Standard Deviation. The excellent precision is a reflection of the efficient collection of POEs in the Pb buttons and the homogeneity of the Pb buttons. However, the accuracy was not as good. The poorer accuracy is interpreted as the calibration of the spectrometer not being as good as desired due to the difficulty in acquiring a suitable range of standards with reliable recommended values for the PGEs. The most recent spectrometer was calibrated with the greatest care and produced slightly better results for Pt, Pd and Rh and slightly worse for Ru.

The mechanism of the flow of tailings slurry is examined, and a mathematical model is derived to describe the flow. Predictions based on the model are then compared with the flow that actually occurred near the shaft at Bafokeng after the No. I tailings dam had failed. The predictions are found to be of acceptable accuracy.

A computer-based, real-time mine management system has been installed in a number of underground operations. The system’s innovative software application is coupled with wireless data acquisition and database management to provide complete mine monitoring and control execution in closed-loop control fashion. The system is well suited to automatically assign equipment, acquire status, and reassign resources based on status; and to automate information handling. The system has provided mines with improved utilization of the equipment fleet and mining crews, and reduced workplace cycle time. This paper describes the deployment of systems at a number of underground mining operations and discusses future development of the system. A survey was conducted so that the degree of corrosive, erosive, and abrasive attack on material-handling systems in the mining and mineral-processing industry could be assessed, and so that the areas of research and development that would be relevant to the needs of the industry could be determined. Of the 59 different mines that were invited to participate in the survey, 41 returned completed questionnaires, giving a return rate of 70 per cent. The total number of completed questionnaires amounted to 45. An analysis of the results shows that attack by erosion or abrasion is considered to occur more often than attack by corrosion. However, al three types of attack must be regarded as significant problems within the mining industry, since 52 per cent of the participating mines reported pump failures due to the inability of the materials of construction to withstand the operating conditions, and almost 90 per cent reported piping failures due to corrosion (22 per cent) or to erosion and abrasion (78 per cent).

In the first section, a brief background to the practical and theoretical aspects of bacterial leaching is presented. Descriptions are given of present and potential methods for exploiting bacterial leaching in metal-winning. In the second section, the results of recent research are presented. The aim of this work was to obtain a greater understanding of the mechanism of bacterial leaching of sulphide minerals. Bacteria were observed to catalyse leaching reactions by oxidising ferrous ions to ferric ions, by removing protective films at the mineral surface and by depolarising cathodic areas.

The Los Bronces Development Project (LBDP) was approved in October 2007 by the Anglo American plc Board at a capital cost of some US$1.74B, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2010. The project represents a big step forward for the Los Bronces mine since it will increase the treatment rate by 140%, the mining rate by 64% and almost double copper production during the first four years of the project. This economy of scale will also position Los Bronces as a much bigger and efficient mining operation, better prepared to face adverse market scenarios and allowing Anglo to consolidate its position in base metals. The project addressed numerous scope alternatives such as plant capacity vs mine capacity, cut-off grade strategy to maximise value based on the existing flotation and leaching process, cutback strategy, etc. Main infrastructure aspects of the project are as follows: ?Dump area with 2400Mt capacity for waste and low grade material ?Mining equipment: 1 x electric shovel, 12 x 300t trucks, 1 x drill ?Primary crusher: 60? x 89? ?Three new power lines (144MW capacity) ?Grinding plant at 87kt/day nominal capacity (includes a 4.3km tunnel with a regenerative conveyor belt) ?Grinding plant: 1 SAG mill 40? x 25?, 2 ball mills ?Slurry pipeline (52 km from grinding to flotation plant) with five choke stations ?Flotation plant (rougher, cleaning, regrinding circuits and molybdenum flotation). The history of Los Bronces started in 1867 when it was discovered. In 1978 ENAMI (Government company) sold Los Bronces to Exxon for US$112M. The same year a snow avalanche destroyed San Francisco Flotation Plant. In 1979 the plant was rebuilt at 4.9kt/day and from 1979 to 2002 several plant expansions were made up to 54kt/day capacity. In 2002 Anglo acquired Los Bronces for US$1.3B. The 2002 resource and reserve statement showed reserves at 459Mt at 1.02%CuT and resources at 780Mt at 0.80%CuT. The 2007 statement shows reserves at 1,480Mt at 0.67%CuT and resources at 1,644Mt at 0.45%CuT. Defining the size of a plant expansion is the key challenge that any expansionary project faces. The scope of this paper is a general review of the project, describing all the mining techniques that were used to define the best options that maximise value. In this context, a range of plant capacities (from 58 to 230kt/day) combined with a range of mining capacities (from 83 to 166Mt/a) were evaluated in detail, defining for each option a mine plan, Capex and Opex, and cut-off grade strategy for flotation and leaching processes and the associated Net Present Value (NPV) that was used as the selection criteria. The Los Bronces mineral resources potential provides good growth opportunities for the mine beyond LBDP implementation, offering an exciting invitation to continue studying new initiatives that maximise the value of this deposit.

Although the experimental work has been confined to a single section of the milling circuit of one mine, it is felt that the findings are applicable to other milling circuits.

"The synthesis of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthyl hydroxamic acid (H2O5) as a collector for bastnaesite is described. The flotation performance of H2O5 with respect to bastnaesite was investigated by flotation tests, measurements of the surface adsorption capacity, and polarizing microscopy. The results indicated that H2O5 exhibits superior collecting performance compared with direct flotation recovery of bastnaesite, with recoveries above 90% at pH 8–9. The adsorption mechanism of H2O5 on bastnaesite was studied by solution chemistry analysis and ?-potential tests. The results showed that the adsorption of H2O5 is associated with the types and concentrations of hydrolysis products of rare earth cations on the bastnaesite surface. At pH 8–9, the hydrolysis-dominant components RE(OH)2+ and RE(OH)2 + of the rare earth cations were adsorbed onto the bastnaesite surfaces, which were considered to be the major positive active points and were beneficial to chemical adsorption of the reagents. The pH range of 7–10 was optimum for bastnaesite floatability, and the adsorption of H205 on bastnaesite was by means of chemical adsorption through formation of a five-membered ring chelate. IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) have long been known as ‘industrial gold’ and are widely used in the petroleum, chemical, ceramic, metallurgical, and permanent magnet material industries because of their special physicochemical properties (Chen, 2011; Krishnamurthy and Guptac, 2002; Esquivel, Bohe, and Pasquevich, 2002; Abrahami, Xiao, and Yang, 2015). Demand for REEs is growing in response to continuous advances in science and technology. Currently, most REEs are extracted from bastnaesite ((Ce,La)CO3F) (Chelgani et al., 2015; Yosry, 1990), which is recovered from rare earth ores by flotation. Typically, hydroxamic acids are used as bastnaesite collectors (Xu, 2015; Ren, 1997; Mousumi and Venugopal, 2016). Research into the mechanism of interaction between hydroxamic acids and bastnaesite is important for improving the recoveries of bastnaesite. However, there have been few studies that examine this mechanism."

Abstract: In this paper both continuous and discontinuous modelling are utilised in order to analyze the stability of the Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. The large span cavern (62 m) was built for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer, and is a unique case study because of the large amount of available input data, through a comprehensive pre-investigation, stress and deformation monitoring program before, during and after the excavation. Phase2, a two-dimensional non-linear finite element program, and the Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) are used as representative tools for continuous and discontinuous modelling, respectively. The analysis results are compared and discussed taking the reliability of the models, time-consumption and costs into consideration. Some guidelines for the total modelling process, from field measurements to final results, are also presented. Zusammenfassung: In diesem Artikel werden sowohl kontinuierlich als auch diskontinuierlich Modellierung verwendet, um die Stabilität, der in den Berg gebauten Olympiahalle in Gjøvik zu analysieren. Die Olympiahalle wurde 1994 zu den Olympische Spielen in Lillehammer errichtet. Ihr Dach erstreckt sich über eine Breite von zweiundsechzig Meter. Für den Bau wurden umfangreiche Daten durch Voruntersuchungen, und Überwachung von Gebirgsspannungen und Deformationen bevor, während und nach Exkavation eingesammelt. Auf Grund dieser großen Datenmenge stellt die Olympiahalle ein herausragendes Beispiel für den Bau ähnlicher Projekte dar. Für die kontinuierlichen Modellierungen wurde „Phase2“, ein zwei-dimensionales, nicht lineares „endlich Element“ Rechnerprogramm angewandt. Die diskontinuierlichen Modellierungen erstellte man mit Hilfe von der „Diskontinuierliche Deformations Analyse“ (DDA). Die Analysenergebnisse sind mit Rücksicht auf die Zuverlässigkeit der Modelle, Zeitverbrauch und Kosten verglichen und diskutiert worden. Im Artikel werden Richtlinien für den Modellierungsprozess von Dateneinsammlung bis Schlussfolgerung gegeben. Résumé: Dans cet article la modélisation continue et discontinue sont utilisés pour analyser la stabilité de Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. Cette caverne de grande portée (62 m) a été construite pour les Jeux Olympiques d’Hiver de 1994 à Lillehammer, et est une étude de cas unique grâce à la grande quantité de données disponibles, de par un programme de pré-investigation compréhensive, monitorage des contraintes et déformations avant, pendant et après l'excavation. Phase2, un code d’éléments finis non linéaire à deux dimensions, et l’Analyse en Déformations Discontinues (DDA) sont utilisés comme outils représentatifs de la modélisation continue et discontinue, respectivement. Duvha Colliery On arrival at the mine, the party was met by Mr. Colin Kolver, Assistant General Manager, and the guides for the morning. After refreshments had been served, Mr. MacDonald, General Manager, welcomed the tour, and a series of slides on the opencast mine and Lesedi Village were shown.

George Young Kisbet was born in Benoni in 1923 and was educated at Pretoria Boys High and the University of the Witwatersrand. Transition metals have been widely used in medicine throughout history. The medicinal use of metals extends back to the earliest recorded history when the Chinese used gold as treatment for a variety of ailments. The ancient Egyptians used copper to sterilize water and mercury was reportedly used by Hippocrates in 400BC. Thereafter, numerous other metals have been used as treatment throughout the centuries. For example, zinc sulphate was used as an emetic in the 17th century and zinc oxide was used to treat epilepsy in the 18th century. This use of metals, and numerous other instances, which have been well described in Sneader 2008,1 make for interesting reading but largely occurred prior to the advent of rigorous scientific method. Therefore, although there are exemptions, most therapeutic applications of metals prior to the modern age lack scientific grounding and have been found to be mostly ineffective. Of more relevance are metal-based medicines approved by regulatory bodies (i.e. Food and Drug Administration; FDA) that are in current use as therapeutic drugs. There are presently a large number of metal-based drugs that are approved for use by the FDA ranging from over the counter medicines, such as bismuth subsalicylate for gastrointestinal problems, to prescription drugs such as lithium carbonate for the treatment of manic depression. The list of metal-based medicines approved by the FDA not only incorporates base metals but also includes precious metals. Platinum complexes have been found to be potently active against several different types of cancers while gold complexes have shown application as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). With the well-established foundation that exists for metal-based medicines, it is imperative to continue exploration into new therapeutic areas. The precious metals; gold, ruthenium and platinum, continue to attract scientific interest in the field of biomedicine and have been widely researched. Scientific studies conducted on gold complexes have demonstrated the potential of this metal for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, cancer and malaria. These diseases are also specific health concerns for developing nations; countries where disease has devastating impact. Within South Africa alone, an estimated 5.7 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS,2 approximately 7 000 new cases of malaria are reported annually, and it is projected that 1 in 4 persons will develop cancer. Continuous development of therapeutic drugs to combat these diseases is therefore apriority, and the exploration of gold-based compounds for this purpose is warranted.

The UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? freeze lining concept combines wall cooling with carbon and graphite refractories of higher thermal conductivities to ?chill? the refractory lining by transferring heat from the refractory lining. Effective sidewall water cooling, together with the efficiency of the heat dissipating conductive refractories, lowers the temperature of the lining to below that of the molten process materials. This causes a layer of slag and process metal to solidify or ?freeze? and form a protective ?skull? which completely coats the refractory hot face. Once formed, the slag skull insulates the refractories, reducing heat loss and protect the lining from erosion, chemical attack, thermal shock, and other stresses. The result: extended life and greatly improved refractory performance. The Ilmenite smelting process depends on the presence of a solidified slag skull to protect sidewall refractory material from chemical attach by molten slag. No known refractory material is able to withstand this corrosive material. To date, UCAR has not applied their Chill Kote ? technology in the ilmenite smelting industry. This paper revolves around the results obtained from conducting an ilmenite smelting campaign on a 500kW DC open-arc furnace with a UCAR designed refractory system. The purpose of this test was to establish the effects such a lining has on refractory wear and the reduction-smelting process. Proper thermo-couple management enabled the authors to monitor lining wear for the duration of the campaign. Prior to the pilot-scale campaign, modeling work was completed to evaluate the feasibility of applying UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? technology to ilmenite smelting furnaces. The successful operation of a pilot-scale furnace equipped with the UCAR® CHILL-KOTE? lining as well as concise modeling suggest that it should be a viable option to consider for an industrial-scale furnace.

The theory of geostatistics covers a branch of .applied statistics aimed at a mathematical description and analysis of geological observations. Geostatistics can be used in pure geology (for example, for the analysis of trace elements in a metamorphic rock), in mineral exploration (for example, for the analysis of geochemical exploration data), as well as in mine valuation. This book is intended to provide a practical introduction to the theory of geostatistical methods of mineral evaluation. Over the years, various mathematical models have been developed to represent the distribution of values in mineral deposits. The simpler models are based on the assumption that the values are randomly distributed. Classical statistical methods, based on this assumption of the random distribution of values, are used to analyse mineral deposits to which these models apply or are assumed to apply. In all mineral deposits, however, one recognizes the presence of areas where the values are higher or lower than elsewhere. Also, the values of two samples in a mineral deposit are more likely to be similar if the samples are taken close together than if they are taken far apart. This indicates that there exists a degree of correlation between sample values, and that this correlation is a function of the distance between the samples. Models have been developed which take this correlation into consideration, with the degree of correlation between sample values being usually measured by the semivariogram function. In these models the fact that two samples taken next to each other will most probably not have the same value, must also be considered; even for very short distances the correlations are usually not perfect and a purely random component is present in the value distribution. The mathematical models will therefore assume the presence of two sources of variability in the values: a correlated component and a random component. Finally, one must consider the particular and very common case of mineral deposits in which the values present a systematic variation in space. This variation is usually referred to as a drift, or a trend. For example, the grade of an ore body may increase with depth of the ore, or it may decrease when one moves away from a central volcanic pipe. The earlier models did not give a satisfactory representation of drifts, and more complex models have been developed, in which three sources of variation are represented. These models are made up of: a deterministic component, a correlated component, and a random component. The deterministic component is used as a model of the drift. The correlated component explains regular changes in values which are not represented by the drift. The random component represents variations which cannot be explained by any of the above factors. The simpler models, based on the assumption of a single random component, will be described first (Chapter 2). The models based on the hypothesis of the superimposition of a correlated component on a random component, will then be analysed in detail. These models are most commonly used in the analysis of mineral deposits (Chapters 3-1 I). Finally, how to deal with the presence of a drift will be briefly described (Chapter 12). This book has been written essentially for students in mining engineering and for mining engineers who are interested in the background to the theory of geostatistics as well as its practical applications. The assumption is made that the reader has an elementary knowledge of statistics. Some knowledge of linear algebra is useful in part of Chapter 9, and is necessary to read Chapter 12. A proof is given of all the equations related to geostatistics, and which are not usually found in elementary textbooks on statistics. Understanding of these proofs is not necessary for practical application of the theory, and the reader may wish to skip them on a first reading, concentrating attention on the numerous simple practical examples given. Although the theoretical geostatistician will not find much new material in this publication, it is anticipated that he will develop some interest in the practical approach chosen to prove the various geostatistical equations. Many people and institutions contributed to the preparation and completion of this work. I am much indebted to Dr D. G. Krige and the Anglo Transvaal Consolidated In- vestment Company Limited, who gave me the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time working on geostatistical problems, both theoretical and practical, during the time that I was in their employment. High-temperature phase relations and thermodynamics of the condensed phase region of the Pb-S-O system at 1473 K were analysed by use of the available information. The sub-regular solution models on Pb-PbS and PbO-PbSO4 continuous melts were used in conjunction to generate a consistent set of thermodynamic and phase equilibrium conditions for the Pb-S-O system. The directions and distributions of conjugation lines between melts of this system were derived with relevant activity and composition data. The calculations permitted the thermodynamic analysis of direct lead smelting and the construction of isothermal reaction diagrams for the system in terms of oxygen and sulphur partial pressures at 1473 K.
