The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. Block model estimates are commonly calculated by the well-established technique of kriging. The mathematics are well established, but implementation details require site-specific considerations. Checking and measuring the performance of the estimates is important to ensure the block model is suitable for its intended purpose. There are different criteria for long-term planning and short-term planning. The implementation of kriging should be checked with cross-validation and assessed for conditional bias and departure from theoretical optimality with the calculation of kriging efficiency. A new expression of kriging efficiency, which compares the kriging variance with the theoretically optimal kriging variance, is developed to aid in this assessment. The assessment tools presented here can be applied in a number of situations; however, ordinary kriging with a reasonably large search performs well in most cases.

In recent years there has been an increased focus on corporate governance matters worldwide. The duties and responsibilities of directors of companies have come under close scrutiny, with shareholders increasing their demands for greater responsibility and accountability. Media attention and pressure groups have also had their effect. Governmental actions have supported these demands and directors have witnessed sweeping legislative changes imposing more onerous duties and liabilities than formerly imposed upon them at common law and in terms of the Companies Act. At the same time, the power of regulatory bodies has been increased to enforce this legislation and make someone pay to remedy an alleged infringement. Breach of such duties may incur personal or criminal liability, or both. Environmental protection legislation has become a particularly prevalent feature in this regard, and the number and complexity of statutes concerning the environment have increased over the past few years. Directors of South African companies will be familiar with relevant acts such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998; Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act 43 of 1983;Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973, as well as the National Water Act 36 of 1998. Now the directors of mining companies are faced with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.

Elandsrand started shotcreting back in 1991. This paper will share the experiences of the mine by looking into the past, the present situation and the way Elandsrand plans to approach the future. It looks at the application of drycrete and discusses the factors that led to the introduction of wet fibre reinforced shotcrete. The logistical constraints of getting shotcrete material underground will be solved by the development of an underground batch plant, using run of mine waste rock as an aggregate.

Metal casting is one of the most important operations in ferroalloys factories. After the tapping of the furnace and the depuration of the metal, the preparation for customers with cooling, crushing and sizing begins. In total production costs, this contains around 8 % of the total cost of the metal, depending on the value of the fines and other important parameters. From an investment point of view, this represents around 20% of the total capital for a new furnace. Casting onto a water-refrigerated copper plate is not new for molten metals. In steel, continuous casting machines are normal in every factory. Water granulation casting exists at some ferroalloys plants. However, the majority of plants and production technology still use the technology of lumping, crushing and sizing. This technology is time consuming, produces fines and requires a relatively large work force. In 2001, Ferroatlantica put into operation a new water-cooled copper casting-machine, which seems to be a very convenient solution to solve all these problems. It is in operation at a silicon factory; the same place where the new ELSA electrode was developed for silicon metal production. This paper describes our experiences using it.

This paper discusses the principles and application of risk assessment and management as the basis for environmental management within the mining industry. Unlike in other industries, mines are required to obtain closure certificates in terms of section12 of the Minerals Act, which should ultimately release them from further environmental responsibilities. It is emphasized that the concept of environmental risk assessment and management, when applied correctly will mean that the mine will be identifying and managing environmental issues beyond those set by current legal requirements and management strategies. The focus shifts from conventional minimum legal compliance management to management of real environmental risks. The advantage of this approach is that the perceived ?shifting of legal and management goal posts? due to changing environmental laws or management principles, will not influence or dictate the mine?s short or long-term management objectives or actions, mine closure funds can be more accurately determined and mine closure should become a relatively simple procedure. The risk assessment approach has been applied to the planning of mine closure at Iscor?s Durban Navigation Collieries (Durnacol) in Kwa-Zulu Natal and certain key risk issues such as the long-term risk of water pollution from coal discard dumps have already progressed to fully quantitative risk assessment. This paper will discuss the process, which has been followed to date, with particular emphasis on the most recent phase, namely quantitative risk assessment and management of pollution from coal discard dumps. It is believed that the approach that is being pioneered at Durnacol and which overcomes some of the more obvious deficiencies of both the EMPR and the traditional IEM process will ultimately serve as the model for all responsible mines in South Africa. It is also believed that this approach will enable the authorities to issue closure certificates with the confidence that there will be no unforeseen surprises in the years after closure.

A modified approach to the implementation of Gy?s sampling theory is discussed and used to design a procedure for sampling crushed gold ore feed to metallurgical process plants. The approach involves calibration of certain ore-specific parameters. These parameters were calibrated for two different crushed gold ores en route to grinding mills in process plants. The model predictions were compared with the predictions from Gy?s original model. Far smaller masses of samples are required by the modified model than by Gy?s model at the same relative variance. The representativeness of the sampling procedure if normally distributed errors are assumed was also calculated. These procedures and evaluations lead to significant savings on cost of handling and preparation of the samples and to a quantifiable degree of confidence in the analytical results for the process plant.

A magnetic anisotropy sensor is used for nondestructive measurement of stress on surfaces of a ferromagnetic material, such as steel. The sensor is built on the principle of the magneto-strictive effect in which changes in magnetic permeability due to deformation of the material is measured in a nondestructive manner, which then can be translated into the absolute values of stresses existing on the surface. This technique was applied to measure stresses of H-beams used in tunnels. The results show that this method could be one of the promising technologies for non-destructive stress measurement for safe construction of underground structures. Une sonde magnétique anisotropique est utilisée pour des mesures non-destructives de stress sur la surface d' unmétal ferromagnétique, comme l'acier. La sonde est construite sur le principe de l'effet magnéto-strictif dans lequel les changements dans la perméabilité magnétique due à la déformation du metal est mesurée avec une manière non-destructive, qui peut être alors traduite en valeurs absolues des stress existants à la surface. Cette technique a été appliquée pour la mesure de stress des poutres en H utilisées dans les tunnels. Les résultats montrent que cette méthode peut être l'une des technologies promet tantes concernant les mesures non-destructives de stress pour des constructions sûres de strcutures souterraines. Ein magnetischer Anisotropie-Sensor wird für die zerstörungsfreie Messung von Spannungen an Oberflächenvon ferromagnetischen Materialien wie z.B. Stahl verwendet. Der Sensor kann Änderungen in der magnetischen Durchlässigkeit auf Grund von Verformungen des Materials erkennen, die dann in Absolutwerte der Spannungen an der Oberfläche umgerechnet werden können. Die Methode wurde auf Messung von Spannungenvon H-Balken in Tunnels angewendet. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass dies eine vielversprechende Methode für diezerstörungefreie Messung im Tiefbau ist.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM The technique reported here involves measuring the air pressures generated within sealed boreholes located behind blasts. Results from twelve free face blasts in competent rock environments a represented. There were no instances of high pressure gas penetration, even at distances corresponding to less than one blast burden. Rapidly generated underpressures were measured in most holes, with the magnitudes of the peak pressures decreasing with distance behind the blasts. It has been proposed that the under pressures are the result of new volume created due to crack formation and overall rock mass dilation. The experimental evidence is consistent with this, including a correspondence of the onset times of the peak underpressures with the nominal firing times of the nearest blastholes. New post-blast cracks were observed when using borehole video cameras in the monitoring holes. A calculation of new volume produced within the monitoring holes is proposed as an indicator of damage. While the data exhibit considerable scatter, there is a power function dependence on scaled distance, which resembles that of typical vibration data. The data also lie within the normally quoted vibration regimes for rock damage and are consistent with measured extents of damage. It is concluded that this technique may provide an inexpensive and practical comparative measure of near-field rock damage due to blasting. It is further concluded that gas penetration is not a common phenomenon. Damage appears to be mainly attributable to the nearest blastholes and the control of charge mass in perimeter blastholes is emphasized for damage minimization.

The rock brittleness is one of the most important rock properties that affect the drill-ability of rocks. It is supposed that the increase in rock brittleness causes the increase in penetration rate. The drill-ability of rocks depends on many factors. These factors can be separated as two parts depending on a machine, bit type, rotational speed, thrust, blow frequency, flushing, and rock properties, brittleness, compressive strength, structure, hardness, etc. In this paper, the relationship between brittleness and drill-ability index, which is used in the prediction analysis of the penetration rate of rotary blast hole drills, were examined using regression analysis. It is also seen that significant correlations exist between brittleness and the drill-ability index.

The use of coal for power generation is being questioned in many developed countries, as a result of ever-tightening environmental restrictions and concerns about the potential impact of CO2emissions on climate. Coal will continue to be the fuel of choice for new power plants for many developing countries with large percentages of the world?s population, because of its relatively low cost and broad availability. Even in many of the developed countries that are under pressure, coal will continue to fuel large percentages of power due to the installed base. Using coal efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner will be a challenge for technology and politics in this new century, with the politics played out on the world stage. Coal use will vary in the next few decades, including short-term changes such as the use of more diverse coals and the increased use of efficient ultra-supercritical boilers to longer term ?refining? of coal to produce a range of energy and chemical outputs. This paper outlines EPRI?s Global Coal Initiative aimed at needed developments and demonstrations that support the long-term vision of environmentally sound and economical coal use for power generation, and discusses some of the forces that are driving this development effort.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.

The Minataur? Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is a novel route for the production of high-purity gold using solvent extraction. Following the successful demonstration of the process on a pilot-plant scale, a full-scale 24 t/a production plant has been commissioned at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, Free State. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold-refining technology, but may be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. Gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity can be produced from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the solid feed, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper outlines the process, presents selected results of two pilot-plant trials in which 5 kg/d of high-purity gold was produced from silver-refining anode slime and gold-electrowinning cathode sludge, and provides some details of the cost benefits.

Recent studies on the physico-chemical properties of molten slags and oxide solid solutions of interest are reviewed. The review covers redox and phase equilibria in slags, viscosity, diffusivity, electrical conductivity, kinetics of interfacial reactions between slags and CO-CO2, interfacial properties and phenomena. Some highlights from ongoing work on modelling phase diagrams, component activity, viscosity and electrical conductivity of multi component slags will be presented and results compared with published experimental data on slags with or without suspended solid phases.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African mining industry with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently, the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel (and possibly more pressing) need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. Chronic shortages in these essential areas continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the South African mining industry in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

The environmental impact of solid waste materials is closely linked to their potential to produce a hazardous leachate once deposited in a landfill. This potential is conventionally assessed with simple laboratory batch leach tests, which find more and more frequent application also in the minerals and metals industry. Such tests are intended to help distinguish between high and low risk wastes, but are completely unsuitable to allow quantitative prediction or modelling of the long-term leachate generation potential. In the present approach the leachate generation process is perceived as a combination of bulk convective transport, stagnant zone and inner particle diffusion, as well as reaction kinetic effects. Model equations are formulated accordingly. A modelling frame work, WASTESIM, has been developed at UCT, which allows flexible combination of the model components and simulation of leach scenarios. Quantitative model parameters are obtained from a systematic laboratory study on the waste material in question. The combined assessment and modelling approach is demonstrated with a study on Cr (VI) leaching from a ferro-chromium slag material. Although not straightforward, the approach is particularly useful in determining long-term liabilities in the context of waste disposal sites with considerably more reliability than has previously been possible. Mintek and BacTech have joined forces to provide the metallurgical industry with bacterial-oxidation processes for the treatment of sulphide ores. The processes are aimed at both refractory gold-bearing and base-metal concentrates. Previously, BacTech had commercially implemented the refractory gold process at the Youanmi Gold Mine in Western Australia. More recently, the process has been incorporated in the Sulphide Treatment Plant at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, Australia. In addition, Mintek and BacTech have recently signed an agreement with the Laizhou Gold Metallurgy Plant in China?s Shandong Province, which will see the third commercial realization of the technology for refractory gold. Development of the base-metal technology is the subject of several papers in the proceedings of this colloquium. The implementation of the refractory gold technology at Beaconsfield is discussed in detail. Some important aspects that are covered include: ?Test work, and the choice of bacterial culture ?Process design choices, and the advantages of the Mintek-BacTech process ?Inoculum build-up ?Plant commissioning ?Plant performance. Besides the Laizhou project, Mintek and BacTech are currently investigating several other commercial prospects for the technology. These include the use of the technology for a gold-copper deposit, where the production of both gold and copper is envisaged.

The paper deals with the results of dynamic tests carried out on a range of surface support liners consisting of combinations of mesh (various types), shotcrete, and wire rope lacing. The testing was carried out over the period 1993 to 1998. The dynamic testing method made use of drop weight impact loading of test samples which attempted to simulate realistic in situ conditions, and the range of loading imposed was equivalent to small to severe rockburst conditions. The results of the testing provide quantitative data, in the form of input energy, which is relevant for support design and for the choice of support types appropriate for situations in which significant mine-induced seismicity occurs or is expected to occur. In addition to the wire mesh and shotcrete liner systems tested, estimates of energy capacity are made for other, untested, systems.
