Traditional fine-grinding mills in mineral processing rely on the use of steel medium for particle size reduction. The IsaMill (a horizontal stirred mill with a 3, 000-L net chamber volume and a rated motor power of 1,120 kW) has successfully adopted a novel product-separator design, which has led to a major revision of medium use in fine grinding. The IsaMill separator has successfully operated with a wide variety of medium types, such as silica sands, river gravel, smelter slag, run-of-mine ore fractions and steel shots, with sizes ranging from 0.5 to 10 mm. Great flexibility in the IsaMill operations has been achieved for processing feed as coarse as 120 µm to a product as fine as 5 µm. This paper discusses the performance of two inert grinding media in the IsaMills that are used at Mount Isa Mines Ltd. for the processing of galena- and sphaleritebearing ores to below 10 µm. They are the copper reverberatory furnace slag (CRFS) and the heavy-medium plant rejects (HMPR). A methodology was also demonstrated for comparing the medium performance and for scaling up the IsaMills from a 1.5-L laboratory batch mill to a full-scale 3,000-L mill.

INTRODUCTION Contemporary underground transit systems often require cross sections which are not adaptable to shield tunnelling. Due to the frequently large dimensions of these cross sections, which are normally situated at shallow depths and in soft ground, full face advance is not feasible because of ground control and construction requirements. Ground deformation and face stability are controlled by "staged excavation", which consists of sequentially driving smaller, specially arranged, individual headings hence avoiding full-face excavation. Shotcrete is normally used for initial support and these tunnels are frequently described as applications of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Figure 1 illustrates the relative size of large cross section tunnels with respect to conventional shield tunnels. Within the scope of this paper, 'large' cross sections are defined as those whose continuous (i.e., without intermediate pillar support) cross sectional excavated area exceeds 60m2. This definition includes most double track highway, railway and subway tunnels, subway stations and some single track railway tunnels. Excavation schemes which have been more frequently used for continuous cross sections (i.e., with no intermediate pillars) are presented in Figure 2. This classification is an extension of that presented previously by Eisenstein et al. (1986). The symbols used for classifying the excavation schemes are formed by the letter T (for "type"), followed by a number, which represents the number of excavation stages fully embraced by a shotcrete ring, termed "cells" by Lessmann (1986). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is investigating approaches to control non-coal mining wastes. In May 1988, the EPA's Office of Solid Waste (OSW) released a document that outlined an approach to manage non-coal mining wastes and materials. This document was called Strawman I. It was a staff-level approach designed to aid the continued participation of interested parties and to enhance EPA's understanding of mining waste issues. EPA has been working with states, public interest groups and the mining industry to gather information and to solicit input on waste management approaches. The involvement of the states in the Strawman process has been coordinated by the Mine Waste Task Force of the Western Governors' Association and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission. Involvement of public interest groups has been coordinated through Colorado Trout Unlimited. And the participation of the mining industry has been managed principally by the American Mining Congress. In May 1990, EPA released Strawman II. It was based on comments submitted to the EPA on Strawman I and on information given to the EPA by interested parties since 1988. Strawman II is again a staff-level approach to protect human health and the environment from wastes and other materials associated with non-coal mining. In September 1990, meetings were held with public interest groups and the mining industry to discuss their comments on Strawman II. By early 1991, the EPA expects to make a decision on how to proceed with program development.

The introduction of biotechnological principles in hydrometallurgy has created new opportunities and challenges for the industry of mineral processing. During the 1950's and 608s, the mining wastes and unused complex mineral resources have been successfully treated in bacterial assisted heap and dump leaching processes, especially for the production of copper and uranium. The economic viability of bio- leaching technology lead to its world-wide acceptance by the mining industries. During the 1970's this technology grew into a more structured discipline which is called "biohydrometallurgy". Currently, bioleaching techniques are ready to be used, in addition to copper and uranium, for the extraction of cobalt, nickel, zinc, gold and silver from diverse mineral resources and for the desulfurization of certain coals. However, in a foreseeable future the biohydrometallurgical processes may be applied also for the treatment of high- grade ores and mineral concentrates using native and/or genetically engineered microorganisms.

Diesel powered equipment has been operated in underground coal for more than 50 years. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), there are approximately 3,000 diesel units operating in underground coal mines in the United States. This number is expected to reach 5,000 diesel units in 250 coal mines by the year 2000. Also, there are approximately 5,000 diesel units operating in metal/nonmetal mines such as trona, potash and salt mines: and more than 3,000 diesel units operating in Canada. This increased popularity of diesel powered equipment over trolley wire, electric trailing cable or battery powered equipment is because of improved safety, greater mobility, higher productivity and increased power of diesel equipment.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Positions of the pulp level (pulp froth interface) and feed entry are presented as a percentage of column height (as measured from the face of the air sparser). The Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) is the next major phase of the DC Clean Rivers Program. The design-build PRT project includes a 5.5-mile-long, 18-foot-internaldiameter tunnel, seven shafts, and two underground connections to existing structures. Major challenges include tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation though mixed-face conditions within a buried paleo-channel and an approximately 1,350-foot-long rock/ soil transition zone; construction beneath the elevated Whitehurst Freeway; tunneling beneath an existing luxury residential building and existing transit tunnels with limited clearance; and complex coordination with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders. This paper describes the overall project scope, geotechnical conditions along the alignment, and primary design/construction challenges and mitigations.

INTRODUCTION Standards limiting the annual exposure of United States uranium miners to radon daughters were established in 1967 at 12 Working-Level-Months (WLM). The standard was reduced by a factor of three, to 4 WLM, in 1971. Currently, the standard is again being examined to determine if it should be changed. Since 1967, Union Carbide has calculated individual monthly exposures in company and contract-operated mines located on the Colorado Plateau. Although it has been possible, by extensive ventilation control measures and accurate routine sampling, to meet the current exposure standard, there are many miners whose exposures closely approach the 4 WLM standard for any given year. However, it was noted that for miners who work for any extended period of years the [average] exposure was much less than the standard. The primary purpose of this paper is to show that, in effect, any annual exposure standard to radon daughters results in a long-term exposure considerably below that standard. Further, most miners, due to their job assignments and/or employment habits, only receive a small fraction of the standard. HISTORY OF EXPOSURE STANDARDS Prior to 1967, radiation protection in uranium mines was fundamentally based on a radon daughter concentration guide. In 1960, the American Standards Association published mine and mill radiation protection standards (ASA-1960). The Colorado Department of Mines, in 1961, adoped a standard which followed the ASA Standard and provided that if concentrations exceeded 10 Working Levels (WL), the area was to be shut down until corrective action was taken; if between 3 and 10 WL, corrective action was to be initiated; between 1 and 3, additional samples were to be taken and individual exposures evaluated; and if below 1 WL, conditions were considered to be controlled. In 1967, the U.S. Department of Labor issued the first exposure standard which called originally for limiting annual exposures to 3.6 WLM but which was later changed to 12 WLM. The complicated regulatory developments leading to this standard have been described elsewhere (Beverly-1969, Rock & Walker-1970). Effective July 1, 1971, this exposure standard was lowered to 4 WLM per year, which is the current standard. Over the past year, there has been speculation about the potential risk to uranium miners working at the present standard. A recent NIOSH Study Group Report (NIOSH-1980) concluded: "There is also strong evidence that a substantial risk extends to and below 120 WLM of exposure." The 120 WLM corresponds to a miner working in uranium mines for 30 years, a rare occurrence, at an exposure rate of 4 WLM per year, an even rarer occurrence. On the other hand, the General Accounting Office, in a recent Report to the Congress (GAO-1981), was very critical of reports by NIOSH on general low-level radiation risks. The GAO recognized that”...important questions remain unanswered about the cancer risks of low-level ionizing radiation exposure;" and recommended that Congress enact legislation giving statutory authority to an interagency committee to coordinate Federal research on health effects of ionizing radiation exposure. The International Commission on Radiation Protection at its March, 1980 meeting recommended limiting the inhalation of radon daughters to 0.02 J per year, equivalent to 0.4 WL, which on an annual basis would be 4.8 WLM and noted it is common to reduce this figure by 20% for allowance in the case of uranium miners for external and/or dust exposure(Sowby-1980). This is essentially equal to the present standard of 4 WLM. As earlier uranium miner exposure studies are reevaluated, and as new studies are conducted, it is important that the relationship between regulatory standards and the resulting actual exposures be recognized. UNION CARBIDE URANIUM MINING EXPERIENCE Union Carbide started mining Colorado Plateau uranium-vanadium ores in the late 1920s for the contained vanadium values. In the early 1950s, the Atomic Energy Commission contracted Union Carbide to produce uranium at mills located in Uravan and Rifle, Colorado. The company now has over fifty years of mining experience in the area. Some mines are operated as company mines and others are operated by private mining companies under a contractual arrangement. Ventilation, sampling, and exposure calculations are carried out the same in contract mines as in company-operated mines. Data presented in this report do not differentiate between company or contract employees and include all employees who worked underground any portion of a year in Union Carbide mines from 1967 through 1980. At the peak of uranium mining activities in 1970, there were 577 miners employed at year end (285 company employees and 292 contract) and 52 mines in operation (8 company-operated and 44 contract mines). Contract mines varied from two-man operations up to 15 employees. Company mines were generally the larger operations and employed from 20 to 100 miners.

The kinetics of gold dissolution in iodide solutions with oxygen in an autoclave was investigated. The leaching process was described by a gas-liquid-solid heterogeneous reaction. The effects of stirring speed, temperature, oxygen partial pressure and lixiviant, concentrations on the overall leaching rate was investigated. It was found that the dissolution of gold could be represented by a heterogeneous chemical reaction. Under the conditions studied, the apparent activation energy ranged from 34.7 to 54.3 kJ/mol. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the kinetic model proposed.

Three International Symposiums-the 14th International Minerals Processing Congress, the 17th APCOM, and the SME-AIME Fall Meeting special symposium on Design and Installation of Com¬minution Circuits-held in 1982 contained a number of papers relating to the fundamentals of processing coals and metallic minerals. In addition, many papers were published elsewhere in the literature. Some of the more significant papers are discussed below. Flavel reviewed key performance parameters, such as energy-size relationships for crushing processes and presented a fundamental basis for optimizing crusher productivity and possibly for development of improved crushers. Pascoe et al. reviewed the use of such control schemes. Magerowski and Karra presented a paper on a computer program developed to and in the design of crushing circuits. The problems associated with the scale-up to very large ball mills were discussed by Arbiter and Harris, and by Kavetsky and Whiten. Both groups concluded that limits on mill productivity arise due to problems associated with particle breakage and transport through mills. Austin et al., and Herbst and Rajamini reviewed the state of the art for the use of grinding circuit simulators for design and control. The effects of mill operating and design parameters on selection and breakage were discussed in detail. The philosophy of control and instrumentation for grinding circuits was extensively discussed by Kawatra and Seitz. Their paper presented for the first time an analytical basis for the inferential particle sizing technique and provided a fundamental basis for the implementation of this technique. The effect of reagent addition variation's on the performance of coal flotation circuits was reported by Kawatra and Waters, and on sulfide flotation circuits by Klimpel et al. Both groups analyzed circuit behavior from a kinetic point of view and reached similar conclusions on the effects of collectors and frothers. The computer simulation of an iron ore flotation circuit also was reported by Kawatra et al. In this work particular attention was paid to the phenomena of froth overloading. Klimpel et al., Kawatra and Waters, and Niemi et al. discussed the philosophy of control by flotation circuits from a fundamental kinetic point of view. An extension of the use of high intensity magnetic separators to the beneficiation of specular hematite was discussed by Thayer and Linkson.

The HW Process Technologies Engineered Membrane Separation (EMS"') technology is a patented system for the removal of multivalent base metal cyanide complexes from cyanide process streams, and EMSni permeate, concentrate and recovery terminology is explained. Specifically, use of the EMS™ system for the removal of Cu(CN)i- and Cu(CN)43- cop­per from cyanide process streams is discussed. The historical "Copper-Gold" processing paradigm of copper related cyanide consumption and complexation and methods to recover copper and copper complexed cyanide from Cu-Au process solutions are summarized. An advanced stage R&D sequential Cu-Au leaching circuit is proposed wherein two PLS streams are generated, i.e., a high copper tenor "first flush" Cu-PLS and low Cu tenor "second flush" Au-PLS. Copper and cyanide recovery from the EMS"' concentrate generated by Cu-PLS EMSTI,f processing by well known acidification processes and lesser developed, but techni­cally feasible, electrowinning processes are projected to be lower cost than similar dilute solution treatments. Gold is described as Merrill-Crowe plant recoverable from the EMS™ permeate stream coming from the Cu-PLS EMS"' process. Gold is also recovered from the EMSTI,f permeate generated by the processing of an Au-PLS bleedstream. The economics of the proposed Cu-Au-EMS"' circuits are estimated as $2/ gpd capital cost for large systems and $1- $3/ l 000 gallons treated operating cost plus royalty.

Wayne Anderson Regarding the technical paper by Thomas E. Finch and Edward L. Fidler, "Recovery of Stray (Thin) Seams in Western Coal Mining." I would like to comment on this subject. In western Canada, most strip mines encounter thin seam coal or rider seams. Although the paper addresses the problems and costs associated with the recovery of this coal, it does not take into account what the savings are. Without looking at the savings, the "Total Objective" is of course not clear. I feel that in a stripping operation the mine can spend per ton (of the thin seam) up to their dragline stripping costs per ton to recover a rider seam or thin seam. The reasoning behind this is simply that this is the price the mine will have to pay to expose an equivalent amount of coal without the recovery of these thin seams. If the mine can recover a rider seam or thin seam for less than the dragline operating costs per ton, a savings will be realized. By recovering a thin seam or rider seam, the life of an ore body is extended by that amount of coal not thrown away. In addition, the cost of land acquisition, associated permits, capital, and reclamation will be reduced as more coal is delivered for a given area. When the above points are considered, the recovery of these thin seams can be very profitable and indeed worth recovering.

Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost, and significantly influence dragline productive time. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result frequent rope changes are required at a substantial cost and time loss to the operation. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline performance, there are no industry-wide standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The life of drag and hoist ropes depends on: (1) rope construction, which should closely match requirements of the specific application, (2) correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria, so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of operation, and (3) rope operating conditions and its maintenance. The study presented in this paper was intended to address the above points, based on a survey and assessment of the present industry practice.

On December 8th of last year, the new St. Clair River tunnel was holed-through to Port Huron, Michigan. The tunnel, commissioned by the Canadian National Railway, was needed to replace an existing tunnel that had been built between 1889 and 1890, and had remained in continuous operation until the new tunnel was opened to traffic in April of this year. The original tunnel, after more than 100 years of service, was still structurally sound, but was too small to accommodate the double stacked container cars and other advances in the railroad's equipment that had developed over the years. Prior to the construction of the first tunnel, all freight was barged across the river. It was a slow, expensive process, which in winter was sometimes impossible. The nineteenth century tunnel was built in twenty months, utilizing two shields that mined to the middle from each end. The lining, which is still in excellent condition, consisted of bolted, cast iron segments, with an O.D. of 6.4 meters. It was the first sub-aqueous tunnel built in North American, and it's use of compressed air under the river and hydraulic power on the shields may also have been firsts. The digging was done by hand, and the muck hauled out by mule drawn wagons. Boulders and methane gas were reported to be a constant problem during the drive, and compressed air sickness was common, but when the two shields came together in August of 1890, it was reported that the alignment was within 6 mm. The new St. Clair River Tunnel was constructed for basically the same reason as the original. The larger equipment which the railroad is using today would not fit through the old tunnel, and once more they were forced to ferry the cars across the river.

7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). The total-stress criterion may be illustrated by the diagram in Fig. 7-lA, which relates the total stress, S, to the cohesion, c: the normal stress, u, and the angle of internal friction, 9, by the expression

"The Phu Kham Cu-Au mine in Laos is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. The deposit is a complex and low grade Cu-Au porphyry ore. The rougher feed has a particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm, and the rougher concentrate is reground for cleaning to 80% passing 25 µm. The Cu losses in the cleaning circuit are primarily in the <12 µm fraction. A randomised paired ON-OFF test of magnetic conditioning in one of the two parallel cleaner 1 circuits was undertaken. The results showed that with magnetic conditioning there was approximately a 10% reduction in the <12 µm Cu distribution in the cleaner 1 tail to a 98% level of confidence. The Cu distribution in the <12µm fraction is a less variable measure of changes in the <12µm Cu recovery, therefore, this was used to evaluate the impact of magnetic conditioning. Subsequently, magnetic conditioning was installed in both cleaner 1 circuits and the plant results monitored after this installation. Comparing the plant results immediately before and after this installation showed that there was a 20% reduction in <12µm Cu losses to the cleaner tail. INTRODUCTION The Cu-Au, Phu Kham Mine (PKM) is located within PanAust's Phu Bia Mining Contract Area in Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital city, Vientiane. PKM is PanAust's flagship operation and the significant cash flow generated by PKM has supported PanAust’s growth, while contributing to a strong balance sheet. PKM comprises an open-pit mine and a conventional milling and flotation operation that produces and exports a Cu and precious metals concentrate. The concentrate contains around 23% Cu, 6 ppm Au and up to 35 ppm silver. Process Overview The PKM deposit consists of complex heterogeneous mineralogy horizons of Cu-Au stockwork and skarn mineralisation. It contains areas of soft-leached zones, overlying transition zones and supergene chalcocite dominant secondary Cu mineralisation and clay-rich gangue. Areas of high As and Zn also pose a challenge in treating the highly variable ore. In addition, hardness of the ore increases with deposit depth. The ROM is hauled to a primary gyratory crusher to produce a coarse ore stockpile with size distribution suitable for the 13 MW semi-autogenous mill. The SAG product feeds two parallel ball mills each equipped with a cyclone cluster producing a product particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm. The conventional flotation circuit consists of two parallel rougher banks. The rougher concentrates feed the regrind cyclone where the underflow is split and reports to two parallel, 3MW, M10000 IsaMills. California&apos;s Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 51,800 km2 (20,000 sq miles) and contain 45 Gt (50 billion st) of high-quality aggregate resources that have been legally designated as "regionally significant," providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and state testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine permitting decisions.

Open-source technology to support Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviews the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study of the use of open-source hardware and software in the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for nonmetallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device, and open-source software, MIT App Inventor, to develop an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a nonmetallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors.

Management teams at mining companies begin to ask themselves whether to take a company public and, if so, how to do it as they approach the normal threshold for going public in terms of revenue and operating performance. Today, the expense of going public generally suggests the company has at least $20 million in annual revenue and at least $2 million in cash. The revenue number can be lower for mining companies with large reserves. In order to properly attract the investing public, the company must also be operationally strong with robust prospects. The company should have a strong management team and a consistent history of double-digit growth that will continue into the foreseeable future. Assuming the thresholds are met, a company?s management needs to weigh the pros and cons of going public.

This paper investigates the effect of varying stress levels on the determination of deformation moduli and examines the sensitivity of the borehole dilatometer in measuring rock mass scale features and its ability to represent rock mass characteristics. Cubical blocks of sandstone, limestone and granite were tested in the laboratory under triaxial stress conditions. Field programs were conducted in both granite and sandstone rock masses surrounding underground openings. The dilatometer&apos;s zone of influence was determined by conducting tests within an instrumented concrete cylinder and by performing a finite element analysis. Laboratory and field results suggest that the deformation modulus of a rock mass can be substantially affected by the stress field and that the borehole dilatometer is sensitive enough to profile deformation moduli as dictated by the in situ rock mass characteristics.
