Gold is easily mobilized at temperatures within range 600-11OO°C by gases such as Cl2, CO, H2S, in gas mixtures, at low pressures. Such gases are relevant to conditions of granulite facies metaomorphism in environments of magma underplating. These observations suggest an efficient mechanism for moving gold to the upper crust during major thermal events. The efficiency of precipitation of gold at lower temperatures is related to available mineral surfaces and pyrite appears to be an excellent substrate for gold precipitation.

Introduction The feeding to zero concept involves feeding 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size raw coal to heavy media (magnetite) cyclones along with the +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. Traditional circuits employ desliming or removing the 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) size fraction and feeding the cyclones +600 µm (+28 mesh) size coal. The feeding to zero concept recirculates 600 µm x 0 (28 mesh x 0) fines in the circuit. At the same time, a portion of the fine material is continuously withdrawn and recovered. This, in turn, prevents a fines buildup. This concept eliminates desliming screens and secondary fines circuitry for recovery of 600 x 150 µm (28 mesh x 100 mesh) coal. The result is a very simple circuit. Feeding to zero at Island Creek Island Creek Corp. was the first involved with the new concept in 1976. The company needed a temporary plant for the 9.5 mm x 0 (0.4 in. x 0) raw coal at its Pond Fork mine, near Madison, WV, while a full-scale plant was being designed and built. At that time, the Childress Corp., of Beckley, WV, became interested in the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek awarded a contract to Childress to build a single cyclone modular plant, incorporating this feeding to zero concept. The plant was erected in three months. The Pond Fork modular plant proved successful in attaining the desired feed rate of about 63.5 t/h (70 stph), while maintaining good separating efficiencies and low magnetite consumption rates. The 9.5 mm x 150 µm (0.4 in. x 100 mesh) clean coal was recovered and the 150 µm x 0 (100 mesh x 0) size was disposed of to waste. The full-scale plant was completed about two years later and the Pond Fork modular plant was moved to Holden, WV. There, it was incorporated into the Holden 29 preparation plant as a separate circuit for cleaning -25 mm (-1 in.) coal. In 1976, a similar plant was installed in Virginia by another company. These two plants are believed to be the first two operational plants in the United States incorporating the feeding to zero concept. Island Creek subsequently contracted with Childress for an identical plant at the Coal Mountain operation in West Virginia. The plant operated for three years before the mine was closed. The unit was then moved to the Spurlock mine near Martin, KY where it continues to operate. The successful operation of the Pond Fork and Coal Mountain plants before and after relocation proved both the performance and moveability of this type of circuit when constructed in a modular fashion. Since the first two plants were built, Island Creek has incorporated the feeding to zero circuit in nine additional plants. A grand total of 33 cyclones have been installed using this concept. One is the Providence mine, near Providence. Providence preparation plant Island Creek contracted with J.O. Lively Corp. of Glen White, WV in July 1978 for the construction of the Providence preparation plant. The plant began operation in February 1979. The construction period was about halved by building the plant with modular design concepts. Prefabricated sections, floors, and sides were brought in as units and then bolted in place. The Providence plant has a good track record of processing coal at a feed rate of 454 kt/h (500 stph). Feed coal to the plant has an average ash content of about 18% and sulfur content of about 4.5%. It contains about 22% refuse. The coal product has an average ash content of about 8% and sulfur content is about 3%. Raw West Kentucky No. 9 seam coal is conveyed from a box cut in the Providence mine to a rotary breaker. The breaker is fitted with 74 mm-diam (3 in.-diam) opening breaker plates. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modi tying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identity and quantity operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. INTRODUCTION Underground mining causes disturbances of the primary state of stresses. Resulting from those disturbances a loss of stability of rocks that surround excavation may occur interrupting the production and creating life danger for the personnel. One of the manifestations of such an instability is a rock burst phenomenon which mainly occurs at great depths. From the mechanical mint of view the rock burst is a loss of stability /Filcek et a1.,1984; Pietuchow and Linkow, 1976/ due to : - quasi-static stress changes in the surrounding rocks; we will call it s seam burst , - dynamic stress changes in the surrounding rocks caused by rock shocks ; we will call it roof burst. Possibility of the rock burst occurrence Is uniquely determined by the state of stresses existing in the rock mass. In the following sections of the paper we will consider different aspects of this question. Moreover distributions of displacements and failure criteria for a coal seam at longwall mining will be defined. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Determination of the vertical stresses and displacements resulting from longwail mining will be based on the Budryk’s idea of a stress wave /Salustowicz, 1955/. The idea originates from the analysis of a roof plate /beam/ resting on the deformable foundation /Sean/ and subjected to the cylindrical bending. Equation of the bending lice uniquely defines vertical stresses and displacements which are induced in the seam. The equation will account only the shear force effect. U. S. petroleum demand has increased at a rate greater than that of domestic production. A domestic energy source that is under serious consideration to augment present supply is oil shale. The Green River formation in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming represents a resource potential containing about 2 trillion bbls. of oil in shales averaging 15 gallons or more per ton or more than 400 billion bbls. in 30 gallon per ton shales. This paper will consider the technological and environmental aspects of developing this resource.

INTRODUCTION The gathering arm loader was patented by Joseph Joy in 1916. This unique machine motion became the standard of the industry and is used on underground loaders and continuous miners throughout the world. Figs. 1 and 2 show two types of gathering arm loaders. The gathering arm loader is a crawler-mounted ma¬chine primarily used for loading coal in a conventional mining system. Other uses also have been found for this machine in noncoal mines and other industries. MECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES The front or loading end of the machine, commonly called the head, consists of a tapered structural frame, hinged at the rear to the chassis and riding the ground at the front. Two bevel-gear cases are mounted in the head. They are connected by a timing shaft, which also acts as a conveyor drive shaft on most models. An eccentric disk attached to each gear case drives the gathering arms. The rear of the arms are attached to a swivel assembly. The motion derived from this arrange¬ment gathers loose material from the ground directly in front of the machine and loads it into the conveyor. Power for this drive is provided by two electric motors mounted under the gathering head. A speed reducer attached to each motor provides a gathering arm speed of approximately 5.2 rad/s (50 rpm). A torque limiting clutch is provided on each reducer to guard the system against sudden impact loading and continual overloading of the motors. The conveyor consists of an open box section through which a universal-type chain carries the ma¬terial to the rear of the machine, where it is discharged into the haulage vehicle. The chain is driven by a sprocket located on the timing shaft between the two gathering-head bevel-gear cases. On some large loader designs, primarily for noncoal applications, the chain is driven by a separate gear motor at the discharge end of the conveyor. However, the system driven by the timing shaft is used most widely. The conveyor frame is hinged just to the rear of the gathering head. It can be raised or lowered by hydraulic cylinders to the desired discharge height. The conveyor frame also is designed to pivot 0.79 rad (45°) either side of the center, just to the rear of the chassis. This feature increases the maneuverability of the ma¬chine and makes it possible to discharge material into the haulage system when in tight quarters such as when turning a crosscut. This function also is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. The chassis of the loader consists of two crawler frames and cross members, holding the frames in position. The frames are either welded or cast as¬semblies. Replaceable wear runners are provided on the frames to take the wear generated by the crawler chain. An adjustable take-up idler keeps the crawler chain in proper adjustment for maximum life. The drive system for the crawler chains varies with the manufacturer, but it generally is one of two basic designs. One system provides a traction motor for each side of the machine, coupled to a speed reducer. A spur and bevel-gear train transfers power to the sprocket, which drives the crawler chain. INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a research facility located in Southeastern New Mexico. The WIPP is being developed by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) to demonstrate the safe storage of defense-related radioactive wastes in bedded salt. Since the WIPP is a research facility. a number of large-scale in situ experiments have been planned and are currently under construction (Munson, 1983). These experiments were designed to study various aspects of nuclear waste storage in bedded salt such as mechanical responses and creep closures of drifts, thermal response due to heated canisters, and thermally-induced fluid migration. One purpose of the WIPP is to develop and demonstrate a general predictive structural analysis capability for a bedded salt repository. One set of experiments, called the Geomechanical Evaluation (Room G), is heavily instrumented to study the creep around several rooms with different configuration. A Layout of the Geomechanical Evaluation room is shown in Figure 1. One portion of it consists of wedge shaped pillar where two drifts intersect at an angle of 7.5 degrees. The pillar can be seen at the bottom of Figure 1. One purpose of the wedge pillar experiment is to study progressive pillar failure in the tip region. Another is to determine how nonuniform pillar thickness affects creep closure of the drifts. An important aspect of the experiments is the correlation between experimental data and corresponding pretest finite element analyses of the site. The finite element simulations serve two purposes. First, the computer simulations aid in understanding the experimental results by providing calculated stress. strain and displacement fields that cannot be measured directly. Second, comparison of calculated and measured drift closures serves as a method for validating or improving the finite element models and the constitutive models employed. The wedge pillar geometry required a 3-D finite element creep calculation. Results from these 3-D calculations will be presented in this paper. A 2-D plane strain double drift model which approximates the wedge pillar geometry at a slice perpendicular to the drift has also been performed and will be compared to the 3-D results in this paper. FINITE ELEMENT COMPUTER PROGRAMS Two finite element computer programs. JAC (Biffle, 1984) and JAC3D (Biffle. 1986), were used. JAC is a 2-D finite element program developed for quasi-static analysis of non-linear solids. It employs the conjugate gradient iterative technique to obtain a solution Spatial integration is performed using a single gauss point in each four node quadrilateral element. An hourglass viscosity technique is used to control the zero energy modes that occur with single point integration. The single point integration combined with the explicit nature of the program and exploitation of CRAY-1 computer architecture results in very efficient execution J4: results were compared to results obtained with eight other 2-D structural creep computer codes in the second WIPP benchmark exercise (Morgan, 1981) JAC3D was derived from JAC to treat 3-D finite element models and has many of the same characteristics including single point integration and hourglass viscosity. In the present experimental study the geochemical stability of inorganic polymers was studied by immersing them in various solutions (distilled water, seawater and 0.5N HCl) for a period of 7 months. Inorganic polymers were synthesised by mixing ferronickel slag with kaolinite, potassium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution. The cement like paste was heated at 80 °C for 48 hours and left for curing at room temperature. Their structural integrity was assessed by compressive strength testing after subjection to freeze-thaw cycles as well as high temperature heating. XRD studies were carried out in order to identify new formed phases and provide useful information regarding the progress of the mechanisms involved.

In the last three years there have been four uncontrolled heating events in mines that have been attributed to the use of polyurethane foam as a void fill product. These heating events are due to the exothermic reaction that occurs during application of these polymeric products. These events led the Mine Safety and Health Administration to issue a safety alert on polyurethane products used in void filling and ground consolidation in mining, with the goal of educating the mining community about this potential hazard. This paper provides an overview of various types of polymeric products and best practices, the factors that contributed to the heating events, and case studies involving polymeric products.

Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler's Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California's insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. Some were father and son operations producing only a few tons of ore a day. Other mines employed hundreds of miners to hoist more than 900 t/d (1000 stpd). Some ores were of marginal grade. As will be seen, the initial investigation of the properties of the guanidine functionality in the solvent form for gold recovery lead to some significant metallurgical developments of their own but, the foremost objective was, and remains, the development of a resin for gold recovery. As a part of this development project, Henkel has entered into association with Mintek, South Africa, and this ongoing association has the potential to develop RIP/RIS technology for the gold industry. More details on Henkel's gold recovery technology and Mintek's role in this programme are given in (1). an The application of ion exchange resins to gold recovery is not new and many reviews have been published on the advantages of this process, and on the current state of the art of gold recovery by ion exchange resins. (2)(3)(4) Widespread application of ion exchange resin based processes for gold recovery has, however, not occurred to date. Fleming and Cromberge (5), described some significant pilot plant RIP trials in South Africa and the partial success of these pilot plant trials held out the tantalising possibility of a breakthrough in gold recovery based on RIP technology. Despite this pioneering work, only two really significant applications of RIP technology for gold recovery exist today. These are the Golden Jubilee Plant in the Eastern Transvaal South Africa and the widespread, although in some respects technically backward, use of ion exchange for gold recovery in the former USSR. There are two main reasons for the current scarcity of RIP and RIS plants used for gold recovery. These are: 1. 2. The perceived problems of engineering RIP plants The lack of a resin having suitable chemistry for both gold loading and gold elution The problems of engineering RIP plants have been largely overcome in the last 25 years. Much of the development in RIP plant design took place in the uranium industry during the rapid expansion of that industry in the mid 1970's. In addition, the development of CIP engineering systems has lead to the development of in-pulp solid extractant based metallurgical plant designs which can, with limited modification, be adopted to RIP. The lack of a resin having suitable chemical properties has almost certainly been the main reason for RIP/RIS not being introduced into the gold industry over the past decade. A paper is presented in which an innovative biological process is described for the treatment of cyanide-, metals-, and nitrate-contaminated mine process water. The technology is capable of detoxifying cyanide and nitrate and immobilizing metals in wastewater from agitation cyanide leaching as well as heap leaching. A pilot-scale demonstration is described in which a pilot plant was constructed to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a mine process wastestream at a mine in Nevada. The demonstration was performed jointly under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is jointly administered by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Western Environmental Technology Office (WETO) and the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Demonstration Program under Interagency Agreement Number DW89938513-01-0. MSE Technology Applications, Inc. (MSE) located in Butte, Montana, was the contractor responsible for conducting the project, and Pintail Systems Inc. of Aurora, Colorado, was the technology provider. The pilot-scale unit was field tested at the Echo Bay McCoy/Cove Mine southwest of Battle Mountain, Nevada. The biotreatment process was con­sidered to be very successful in detoxifying cyanide from the mine process water. The process was also determined to be very effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutral­ized and nitrates were successfully removed in the mine process water. As a result of conducting these pilot-scale tests, the biotreatment process was concluded to offer an innovative, cost­effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

The Lucerne Valley Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division of Chas. Pfizer & Co., Inca, are located about 5 miles south of the town of Lucerne Valley, California. These operations consist of several limestone quarries, a whiting plant which produces finely pulverized limestone products, a-kiln which produces granular quicklime and lime products, and maintenance shops, warehousing, shipping, and office facilities. Construction of the Lucerne Valley plant began in 1961 as the result of a decision to utilize large undeveloped reserves of limestone in that area. Quarry development was started in the following year; and by 1965, Lucerne Valley had become the principle limestone and lime facility of the Western Operations of the Minerals, Pigments and Metals Division.

During the 14 years since the last update to National Instrument 43-101 (NI 43-101), there have been many discussions between Canadian regulators and mining companies about mining disclosure deficiencies that arise from regulatory reviews. These discussions are not made public, and as a result, there has been some drift in how NI 43-101 is interpreted by the regulators, which in turn creates uncertainty for the mining companies trying to comply with the instrument. To reduce uncertainty in mining disclosure requirements, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) has issued a notice to update the current NI 43-101 with a streamlined instrument and form. Changes and benefits are listed in the “CSA Notice and Request for Comment — Proposed Repeal and Replacement of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects,” which is available on the Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia Securities Commission websites. The public has been invited to comment, with the comment period ending on Oct. 10, 2025. The 43-101 Companion Policy (43-101 CP) provides an update to the views of the regulators on how the CSA staff interpret and apply certain provisions of the instrument. Collectively, some of the changes to NI 43-101, the form and 43-101 CP are likely to increase the financial and other burdens on the mining companies responsible for the disclosure, and the qualified persons (QPs) who create the disclosure. In other instances, there are missed opportunities to reduce the burden on mining companies and QPs without impacting the markets.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the geology and the modelling work carried out to date. The Lisheen Zinc-Lead deposit was discovered in April, 1990. The deposit comprises two stratiform sulphide orebodies, hosted within the Lower Carboniferous Waulsortian limestone formation. The fully diluted geological resource is 22.5 Mt @ 13.02% Zn and 2.19% Pb, based on a total of 548 diamond drill-boles and 10,998 sampled core intersections. Due to the absence of a geological marker it was necessary to apply economic criteria to define and model the resource envelope. In common with other drill-hole geological databases, the establishment of a workable geological model presents unique challenges.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. So far, we have developed and reported on algorithms that automatically produce accurate time-study reports of continuous miner data from kilowatt sensors at the Deserado Mine, and we are extending the system to accept other types of sensor data input. This paper focuses on AI techniques that improve accuracy of the numerical algorithms in the PRS module. Additional AI work for the KRS module is summarized in this paper.
