It is difficult to fail if one has a great deposit, but 'great' ore deposits are few and far between. More often one hears that a mine has been 'made' rather than found. This is particularly true for industrial minerals and for gold and silver projects. Even the best ore deposit can often be improved through innovative technology, e.g. the Escondida copper mine in Chile, where a novel ammonia leaching process is yielding a fabulous DCFROI. Consider the case of a small high grade gold mine. Previous owners had found inadequate reserves to justify the capital cost of developing the mine and installing a mill. Lower grade resources had been ignored because the owners were looking only for grades that would be high enough to support a small underground mine and mill. Randol, assisted by Kappes Cassiday & Associates, determined that the ore was amenable for heap leaching. Secondly, existing drillhole data indicated a significant lower grade resource that appears to be accessible to open pit mining methods. In this case, the appropriate selection of off-the­shelf technologies has literally 'made' the mine. At the Randol at Vancouver '94 conference on Latin American Mining Opportunities, papers on innovative technolo­gies for exploration, mining, metallurgy and environmental management were presented in non-technical terms for managers and resource developers. It was surprising how few of the exploration- and finance-oriented delegates participated in these sessions. Numerous technologies were presented that could be added to one's arsenal of tricks to 'make' a mine, i.e. to convert resources into ore reserves through knowledge.

INTRODUCTION Dynamic (seismic or microseismic) methods of determining the stability of structures in rock are based on detecting and analyzing the characteristics of seismic energy that has originated from or traveled through the rock mass. This seismic energy can be in the form of naturally occurring rock noise energy resulting from structural adjustments within the rock or can be introduced into the structure by physical means, such as by blasting or impact. In either case, the seismic energy radiating through the rock mass can be detected using standard equipment and can be analyzed by established techniques to reveal a wide variety of information concerning the condition and stability of the rock mass through which the energy has traveled. In the following sections, the basic instrumentation required for seismic and microseismic studies is described, and some of the presently used applications of these methods are discussed to exemplify the state of the art. INSTRUMENTATION Seismic disturbances in a rock structure generate two types of seismic wave radiation, body waves and sometimes surface waves, which radiate outward in all direc¬tions from the source of the disturbance. Underground mining applications are generally concerned only with discerning the characteristics of the resulting body waves, i.e., the compressional (p-wave) and the shear (s-wave) energy. As these two forms of energy travel through the rock structure, the particles of the rock mass are caused to vibrate, and the vibration character¬istics resulting from each of the two types of wave are distinct. Some important differences are: 1) Compressional and shear waves travel at different velocities through the rock structure. 2) The frequency at which each wave causes particles to vibrate is different, and may range from about 50 to 100 000 Hz. 3) The amplitude or energy level of each wave is different, with the shear energy usually being the greatest. These differences form the basis for equipment se¬lection for individual studies and for modern data analysis techniques. The following sections describe the basic equipment necessary to detect and record seismic wave energy data and show several examples of analysis procedures and how these procedures have been used. In principle, seismic equipment is very simple. It consists of a geophone (or geophones) to detect the seismic energy vibration and convert that vibration to an electric signal, an amplification system to increase the level of that signal, and a means of monitoring and/or recording the signals detected. Fig. 1 is a block diagram of a typical system. The following sections offer a very brief discussion of system components and their individual functions. A more complete discussion is given by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Geophones The function of the geophone is to detect the vibrations caused by the passing of the seismic wave energy and to convert that vibration into an electrical signal that displays both the amplitude and frequency characteristics of the vibration. Particle motion or vibration can be quantified and measured by measuring displacement, velocity, or acceleration of the particles. Thus, there are three types of geophones: displacement gages, velocity gages, and accelerometers. The choice of gage depends on the characteristic frequencies of the seismic energy to be monitored and the sensitivities of each type of geophone. In general, displacement gages are used for low-frequency monitoring (periods to 1.0 Hz), velocity gages for medium-frequency monitoring (1.0 to 250 Hz), and accelerometers for high-frequency monitoring (250 to 10 000+ Hz). Experience has shown that in underground studies, the choice of which gage to use lies between velocity gages and accelerometers. An easy, accurate method for selection of gage type is discussed by Blake, Leighton, and Duvall (1974). Once the type of geophone has been selected for use, it must be properly installed, and in the installation procedure the most important step is insuring that the gage is firmly attached to a competent portion of the rock structure. Poorly mounted geophones may entirely fail to recognize low-level seismic signals and will distort the information from signals they do see. Amplifiers Seismic events associated with mine structures occur over a very broad range of energy which results in a broad range of geophone output levels. In general, geophone output levels occur in the microvolt to low milli-volt range, and it is necessary to amplify these signals in order to drive recording or monitoring equipment. The following is a summary of the Robert E. Murray Innovation Lecture on “Sustainable Copper Mining Flowsheets and the MissionZero Mine” presented as part of the keynote session on Feb. 23, 2026 during the MINEXCHANGE 2026 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Salt Lake City, UT. As the world accelerates its transition to renewable energy, the appetite for critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, rare earths and graphite has never been greater. Forecasts suggest that global mineral demand will double by 2050, driven by the proliferation of electric vehicles, renewable power infrastructure and digital technologies. This surge presents not only an immense opportunity but also an unprecedented challenge. In a world where every ton of ore processed and every liter of water used is scrutinized, how can mining deliver more with less, while meeting tightening environmental and social expectations? Traditional mining methods, developed for an era of abundant, high-grade ore and looser regulations, are struggling to meet today’s demands. Declining ore grades, volatile markets and the imperative to shrink environmental footprints have rendered traditional mineral processing practices unsustainable. The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) will be Britain’s first major new railway for over a century—a high-speed line running for 109km (68 miles) between St. Pancras station in London and the Channel Tunnel. The new line has been under construction since October 1998 and the first phase will open in October 2003. The project includes22km of twin 7.15m ID TBM bored tunnels under London and the River Thames, and the 3km North Downs Tunnel, the first major NATM tunnel to be constructed in the United Kingdom since the collapse of the Heathrow Express Tunnels in 1994. This paper will discuss the design of these tunnels and describe the construction progress to date. The discussion will include details of segmental lining design, TBM specification, and sprayed concrete lining design.

The trend to larger grinding mills, requiring total drive power in the range of 10,000 KW(13,400 HP) or so provides the incentive for developing new power transmitting techniques, since conventional girth gears are limited to about 3700 to 4500 KW per mesh (5000-6000 HP). For the immediate future, the synchronous motor, with its beneficial power factor, and the squirrel cage induction motor, with its high reliability record and low maintenance, still promise to be the best choice for prime mover(s). Due to the abovementioned single mesh power limitation of the gear train, however, two or more motors must be combined to attain the required drive power. This paper describes a scheme for coupling these motors to the mill using a straightforward, essentially mechanical means that is based on proven components and controls.

Thionocarbamate flotation reagents have enjoyed a niche position in the recovery of copper sulfides and activated sphalerites since their introduction in the mid 1950's (Harris, 1954). Thionocarbamates containing an allyl group (-CH2- CH=CH2), introduced recently Lewellyn, 1985; Nagaraj, 1988; Avotins, 1991), are used commercially as collectors for copper sulfides and activated sphalerite. Laboratory flotation tests and plant usage have demonstrated that allyl-containing thionocarbamate collectors exhibit certain unique properties that distinguish them from the corresponding dialkyl thionocarbamates. Spectroscopic (FTIR, XPS) and wettability studies of N-allyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (AIBTC) and its saturated analog N-propyl iso-butyl thionocarbamate (NPIBTC) adsorbed on copper at pH 9 were performed in order to investigate whether there were any fundamental reasons for these differences. Flotation tests were carried out on chalcocite, copper ore and an activated sphalerite.

That?s automation in the truest sense of the word, but we call it automatic and think nothing of it. If we use the word automatic instead of automation your mine electrician and mechanic will take hold of the problems in stride.]

Cuprex Limited is currently developing a small gold mining operation in Central Australia in the Tennant Creek field. In February 1984, the company undertook a feasibility study on the project and operations commenced in August 1984. Ore reserves are located between 230 and 280 metres (755 ft and 919 ft) below surface and ore extraction required the establishment of a shaft network for access, ore hoisting and ventilation. Zeni Drilling Company from West Virginia, U.S.A. was contracted to blind drill two shafts for the project. Blind drilling was selected for various reasons, including timing which related to cost efficiency. The blind drill shaft technique has proved successful in this application and with enthusiastic and innovative support from the mining industry, will prove an efficient and cost effective means of accessing and operating underground mining projects of all sizes in the future.

Ore at the Magmont Mine in southeast Missouri is extracted by the room and pillar method on two and sometimes three horizons. In 1991, an innovative plan was formulated for recovery of high grade ore in pillars using cable bolts to accommodate spans of more than 27 m (90 ft). A test area was subsequently selected and a recovery plan developed. A cooperative rock mechanics study effort by COMINCO METALS, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was later established. When initially opened in 1968, the planned production rate was about 1,000,000 tons per year. Due to declining reserves, the production rate was decreased to 630,000 tons per year in November 1992. Pillar recovery now accounts for approximately 40%-50% of the mined tonnage and plays a vital role in allowing Magmont to continue to operate.

The stability of a liner system is influenced by many factors which can be compiled into four basic groups. They are: 1. the liner system components and physical characteristics; 2. the geometry and slope of the liner system; 3. the loading conditions on the liner system; and 4. the foundation conditions under the liner system. Failures in the liner system that are due to one or more factors from the first three groups usually result in movement relative to the plans of the liner system. Failures associated with factors in the fourth group result in deformation(s) across the liner system section beyond its design limits. For purposes of these discussions a failure in the liner system refers to displacements or movements resulting in physical damage to the liner system such that it can no longer function.

The Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with a narrow vein, hard rock underground mine to research the effects of the binder content on the elasticity and post-peak ductility of cemented hydraulic backfill (CHB). This is part of a larger study to enhance the long-term integrity of ground support in underground mines. As mining advances deeper and stresses increase, CHB mix designs will benefit if they can be modified to handle higher levels of strain which are induced by an increased stope closure, typically affected by a reduction in stope width and increased mining depth, or through dynamic loading resulting from a local seismic event. This portion of the research examined the impact of reductions in binder and their impact on Young’s modulus, peak strength, and post-peak ductility.

China abounds with phosphate resources, but most of them are of old geological age, have high dolomite and other impurities, and are fine grained. Prior to beneficiation, fine grinding is usually required for liberating impurity minerals from phosphate. These deposits are perhaps the most difficult to treat phosphate ores in the world. In its 30-year campaign for efficient utilization of indigenous phosphate resources in China, the Lianyungang Design and Research Institute (CLDRI) has developed fine-particle flotation technology for beneficiation of such low-quality phosphate ores. The processes of direct flotation using L or S series depressants and carbonate flotation have been successfully applied on industrial scale with very satisfactory results. This paper introduces three phosphate beneficiation practices in China: the Jinping plant of Jiangsu province, the Dayukou plant of Hubei, and the Wengfu plant of Guizhou.

The modem copper industry presents an excellent opportunity for the application of clean, environmentally friendly techniques using currently available hydrometallurgical technologies. This paper briefly reviews key events in the development of modern hydrometallurgy in Chile. Discussion is given to those prominent events whose impact continues to be felt on most projects currently underway. Mention is also made of the foundations of heap leaching technologies, preceded by agglomeration and acid curing, known as the T.L. Leaching Process, the cornerstone of more recent developments. A review is also presented of the leading copper hydrometallurgy projects of the 1990s. A list of those projects, their tonnages and the estimated date of implementation is provided. The conclusion provides an overview of developments in research and the trends in the implementation of copper hydrometallurgy projects in Chile for the coming years.

For the first time in an underground stone mine, the relationship between roof movement and microseismic emissions was examined in conjunction with two distinct roof fall areas. As roof monitoring increases in acceptance and monitoring technology advances, the goal of providing reliable roof fall detection systems to enhance the safety of underground mine workers moves closer to reality. Instrumental to reaching that goal is the ability to interpret accurately and completely roof movement and microseismic emissions, which can serve as precursors to roof falls. This paper examines the capabilities of convergence and microseismic monitoring systems to better understand roof rock failure mechanics and to anticipate roof falls. An understanding of how these techniques are used and how they interact with each other is critical in developing the most effective ground control strategy for our nation’s mines.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report is an analysis of underground coal mine fire incidents occurring in the United States during the 15 years from 1978 through 1992. The fire data used in this analysis were obtained from Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mine fire investigation reports. Fires were analyzed by year, state, coal bed thickness, mining method, evacuation measures taken, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment involved, detection method, time of day, number of injuries and fatalities, and method of extinguishment. In all, 164 fires are reported, or an average of 10.8fires per year. The most common ignition source was electricity, the most common burning substance was coal, the most frequent fire location was the belt entry, belt conveyors were the most common equipment involved in fires, and water was the most common extinguishing agent.

The present study has investigated the bioleachability of low-grade and high-grade pyritic gold ores and the extraction of gold from the leach residues of bioleaching with thiourea solutions. Final gold extractions as high as 96% were obtained from the high-grade ore and above 93% from the low-grade ore. The gold extraction was found to follow the extent of pyrite biooxidation. Using a cyclic voltammetric technique and carbon-paste-FeS2 electrode it was found that the semiconductor pyrite oxidation involves many intermediate electrochemical reactions. Furthermore, the oxidation is solid-state diffusion controlled as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements.Using Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion biooxidation of pyrite was determined to be AEa=22.4 kJ. A generalized model for the mechanisms of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

Discussion by E.S. Cheney Minter (1990) has provided an excellent summary of the sedimentology and theories of origin of the Witwatersrand paleoplacer Au/U deposits. However, recent stratigraphic, metamorphic and structural -tectonic research is radically changing the concepts about the Witwatersrand that now occur in most textbooks, review articles and North American minds. Presently, these concepts are biased by the past sedimentological research so well described by Minter. Specifically, the Witwatersrand Supergroup is Archean, does not occupy a depositional basin and is significantly metamorphosed and deformed. Thus, many of its sedimentary features, including the mineralogy of its ores, have been modified. The importance of the Witwatersrand ores cannot be overestimated. Relatively few longwall mines in the U.S. operate under multiple seam conditions where the two seams are less than 200 ft apart. This paper describes the experience of six that do. These operations are located in PA, WV and UT, and include examples of both undermining and overmining. Some operate above or beneath their own workings, others are in historic mining districts and must contend with abandoned mines that are decades old. The lessons that these mines have learned cover a broad range of topics, including: • Whether to stack gateroads or place them under old gob areas; • How to size pillars and select artificial support to cross longwall stop lines; • How to use yield pillars to minimize multiple seam stresses and coal bump potential, and; • When to anticipate the creation of pathways for gas, water, or oxygen between current and abandoned gobs.

As a prerequisite to removing mineral matter from coal by any physical separation technique, the mineral and coal particles must be sufficiently liberated. In the case of the production of superclean (< 2% ash), low-sulfur products, the appropriate liberation size may be less than 10 µm. Unfortunately, much of the liberation data obtained at these fine sizes is only qualitative due to the lack of appropriate instrumentation. In the present work, computerized image analysis has been used to characterize several common eastern U.S. coals. In most cases, it has been found that micronizing of the coal is necessary in order to achieve sufficient liberation for deep cleaning. Liberation analyses of the products from the microbubble column flotation process have been used to distinguish problems in liberation from problems in selectivity, especially as they pertain to pyrite rejection.

The industrial mineral filler plant of the Gouverneur Tale Company is equipped with a good dust collection system installed long before the recent popularization of environmental pollution. Credit for this fact is due to the foresight of Mr. R. S. McClellan, Project Manager and subsequent Vice President and General Manager of Gouverneur Talc, who recently retired as Vice President Engineering of the parent organization, the R. T. Vanderbilt Company. Also instrumental in the early stages of plant operation and the solution of start-up problems was J. A. Gustin who is now an engineering consultant located in Martinsville, Va. Credit is most certainly due to the late R. T. Vanderbilt, the company&apos;s founder, who favored and approved the investment in the necessary facilities that were far ahead of all competitors in the industry at that time.
