With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The American Concrete Institute defines shotcrete as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as gunite, which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this chapter. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, then chief engineer of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) George Rice developed the gunite process for underground test work at the USBM facility at Bruceton, PA. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto tunnel in California. The greatest development was in Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Initially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately after the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the new Austrian tunnel method or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the US reliance on wood or steel supports in main-line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to accept the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Shotcrete is a relatively new material for use in underground support systems. Consequently, experienced miners are not always available who are capable of applying the material effectively. Shotcrete, particularly in the small cross sections typical of mine shafts or haulageways, is applied in cramped quarters under less than ideal conditions. Adequate lighting should be made available. The surface should be clean and free of running or dripping water. It may be necessary to collect flowing water in plastic pipes or water collection devices. Any dry cement dust from previous shotcrete applications should be washed from the surface in order to assure a good bond. The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) while shooting test panels at the Cunningham tunnel in 1974, found that experienced shotcrete operators were able to obtain up to three times greater compressive strengths than were obtained by unskilled operators using the same equipment and shotcrete mix. ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS Since sodium and potassium hydroxide, as well as other moderately toxic compounds, are often contained in shotcrete (particularly where accelerators are used), safety precautions must be taken to prevent skin and respiratory irritation. Nozzlemen and helpers are required to wear gloves, protective clothing, and ventilation hoods with a filtered air supply. Respirators approved by USBM, equipped with chemical filters that will not pass the caustic mists, may be permitted in lieu of hoods if goggles or safety glasses are worn. Protective ointments are available to reduce skin irritation. All air and shotcrete feed hoses should be equipped with safety-type couplings and secured with safety chains at each coupling to prevent whipping in the event of a hose or coupling failure. Some environmental effects can take place down-stream from the development face being supported. The accelerator compounds, as well as the portland cement used in the shotcrete, will be found in the rebound material which falls to the invert of the heading. Since these compounds may be leached from the rebound material and carried by the drainage system, it may be necessary to install neutralizing or other water treatment facilities. Investigations may find that the final reaction with other compounds being leached from the mining operations may result in a more or less environmentally acceptable end product. USES OF SHOTCRETE General Uses Shotcrete, as a combination of cement, aggregate, and accelerator, is utilized for underground openings such as shafts, adits, haulageways, and service chambers for the following general purposes : (1) primary sup¬port; (2) final lining; (3) protective covering for excavated surfaces that are altered when exposed to air (the protective covering may be of a temporary or final nature); (4) protective covering for steel or wooden supports, rockbolts and rockbolt plates, heads, nuts, and other mats, including wire fabric, used to prevent rock-falls; and (5) as a lagging material in place of timber, steel, or concrete between steel or wooden supports. These applications can be grouped into three general use categories: shotcrete used as a rock sealant, shotcrete used as a safety measure, and shotcrete used as a structural support. Use as a Rock Sealant Thin applications of shotcrete can reduce or prevent slaking of shales or other rocks that are altered when exposed to the wetting and drying cycles created by mine ventilation circuits. While shotcrete may be effective in preventing such rock alteration, at the present time it is not as economical or efficient as other commercial sealants. However, if the sealant property can be incorporated into the structural support capability, the added contribution is usually helpful. "More than 25 years of uninterrupted research on ground support technology for underground mines has been undertaken at the University of Wollongong. This research has resulted in significant findings on tendon characteristics and strength properties. The paper focuses on the development of the fourth generation of cylindrically shaped shear test apparatus for assessing tendon performance in shear. This shear apparatus is known as the MK-IV Double Shear Box or Naj Aziz Double Shear Box (NADSB), and is based on the experience gained from the development of previous versions of rectangular double shear boxes. The new NADSB is circular in shape and is fitted with a truss system, which permits friction free shear testing of tendons across joint planes. A series of double shear tests were carried out on a number of cable bolts commonly used in Australian mines, both plain and indented wires, under varied pretension loads. The results were compared with similar test results using rectangular shaped double shear apparatus, with and without friction across joint faces. The significance of wire surface roughness and increased initial pretension loads are discussed and conclusions made, suggesting that indented wires are inferior in shear compared with plain cable bolts. The general test procedure of the NADSB is described and different concrete reinforcement techniques are reported. The influence of external and internal confinement of the concrete medium blocks in a circular double shear box contributed to consistent test results with a minimum of lateral and axial cracks occurring in the host medium.INTRODUCTIONThe use of long tendon ground support elements (cable bolts) is now a common practice in modern underground coal mines, hard rock mines, tunnels and other underground structures. Due to their material properties cable bolts contribute significantly to the overall ground reinforcement provided by a support system. Cable properties in tension and shear are in many cases vital to maintaining a safe and productive underground environment. Accordingly, tension and shear properties must be assessed accurately using both valid and reliable methods.Load transfer property testing of tendons has been studied over several decades with much of the early research focused on the pull and shear testing of solid rock bolts and hollow bolts (like Swellex and split set tube bolts), as these elements were used extensively at this time. It was not until the 1970’s that the use of cables for ground reinforcement developed, and as such highlighted the need to extend load transfer property testing to include shear strength of cable bolts. Initially, the discarded hoisting ropes were used for ground support in metal mines, particularly in stopping wall support and then late in 1980’s cable tendons began to use in coal mines."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) initiated a testing program to assess the effects of lateral loading on various standing supports used in underground coal mines. This study is not intended to endorse a particular type of standing supports nor to provide a comparison between different types of standing supports. This paper aims to measure the lateral loading capacity of two types of standing supports and evaluate how it affects their vertical loading capacity and yielding mechanisms. The study utilizes the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at NIOSH Pittsburgh. Type-1 support is characterized by telescopic tubes made from ASTM A-513 steel with a specified locking mechanism, and Type-2 support comprises a single component constructed from ASTM A500 Welded Grade C pipe. Vertical load tests were carried out to assess the designed performance of Type-1 and Type-2 props. Type-1 props demonstrated a "constant yielding" behavior, achieving an ultimate capacity of up to 140 kips. Type-2 props showed a "load shedding" behavior, reaching peak verti- cal loads of up to 191 kips. Buckling analysis revealed that Type-1 props were not designed to buckle, and Type-2 props failed due to buck- ling rather than material yielding. Under vertical pre-loading, lateral loading tests showed that Type-1 props can withstand about 9 kips, and Type-2 props can withstand about 10.79 kips of lateral load. This represents roughly 6% of their vertical loading capacities. Testing props under lateral loads in addition to their intended vertical loads showed that the lateral loads could influence their loading mechanisms. Type-1 props did not exhibit the expected "constant yielding" behavior under lateral load but instead showed "load shedding" decreasing their rated vertical capacity by 70%. At high vertical pre-loading, Type-2 props demonstrated "constant yielding" behavior instead of the anticipated "load shedding," leading to a 60% reduction in their rated vertical capacity. These findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of these props under different loading conditions, aiding in their efficient use and design in underground mining operations.

The announcement of a minable reserve of 13.6 Mt (16 million tons) averaging 0.9 g/t (0.027 oz per ton) Au and 2.4 g/t (0.71 oz per ton) Ag for the open pit-heap leach reserve at Red Mountain No. 3 in Ouray County, Colorado, by Cornucopia Resources in November 1985 brings another open pit-heap leach precious metal ore body to the production stage. With about 8.2 Mt (9 million tons) of waste and metallurgical studies showing acceptable recovery rates, low reagent consumption, and good final percentage recovery, Red Mountain is a discovery that will add to the precious metal inventory of the US. Frank Baumgaruler of Denver, CO, recognized the precious metal potential in Red Mountain No. 3 and acquired all of the old claims. James Matlock conducted a field reconnaissance over Red Mountain No. 3 independently of the Baumgartner activities and recognized epithermal alteration and mineralization in the Tertiary volcanics. He recommended acquisition of the ground and was able to obtain rights and drill six core holes for Amoco in 1982. Amoco drilled a further nine core holes in 1983, but then dropped the property. Cyrano Resources examined the data and through its consulting geologist, V.F. Hollister, acquired the rights dropped by Amoco. In 1984 Cyrano began further drilling of the ore zone demonstrated by Amoco but they were then acquired by Cornucopia Resources. Cornucopia completed development of the property and commenced the permitting process in 1986. The property was recognized as a disseminated gold deposit by both Baumgartner and Matlock, and both deserve credit for properly evaluating mineralized outcrop in the Tertiary volcanics. However, Cornucopia recognized the profit potential in the heap leach exploitation of the ores and de- serves credit for completion of premine feasibility studies. The discovery is clearly a geological one, but the premine engineering studies were essential to the conversion of the prospect to a commercial mining enterprise. The deposit lies on the circular bounding fault of the Silverton caldera. Two reprints follow that help understand the geologic setting of the ore controls.

The Urad property had been worked intermittently for over 50 years before American Metal Climax (AMAX) started an extensive exploration program on this property in 1961. The detailed studies of the property proved a large ore body of low grade molybdenum ore that could be mined by modified panel caving methods. Mine development and mill construction for a 5000 TPD operation was completed in July 1967. The Urad mine and plant site is located 55 miles west of Denver near Berthoud Pass. The plant elevation is 10,200 feet. The crushing plant is located underground because available surface area is re¬stricted by snow slide hazards. Crushing plant layout and ventilation system design for the Urad mine was based on our operating experience at similar crushing facilities located at the Climax operations. Low speed conveyors of generous width, adequate exhaust volumes at all ore transfer locations, large hoods and good conveyor skirting have made the Urad underground crusher dust control operations very satisfactory. Good maintenance and cleanup of the crusher facilities have made a clean working area with very low dust exposure. The ore from the mine is dropped approximately 1000 feet through ore passes to scraping drifts above the crusher and then transferred to the coarse ore bin by 150 h.p. slusher hoists. A reciprocating plate feeder under the coarse ore bin feeds a 48 x 60 jaw crusher. Ore from under the crusher is conveyed on a 48 in. belt to a vibrating screen where oversize passes through a 7 ft. Standard cone crusher. The crushed ore along with the screen undersize is conveyed on a 42 in. belt to a 1000 ton surge bin.

Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, WY trona district since August 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the amount of relatively expensive development mining and improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning in April 1987. As of June 1988, four shortwall panels had been completed using the advancing tailgate, producing more than 739 kt (815,000 st). This paper discusses the effects of the advancing tailgate on shortwall production, development mining requirements, costs, strata mechanics, and ventilation. Shortwall mining is a hybrid extraction method combining the self-advancing hydraulic roof supports from longwall mining and continuous mining machines (Fig. 1). The technique has been only marginally successful at the majority of the nearly 20 installations worldwide. At present, the face at Tg Soda Ash Inc. is the only shortwall operating in the United States and the only noncoal shortwall in existence. Despite the method's record of limited success, the staff at Tg Soda Ash determined that the conditions in its trona mine were well suited for shortwall mining. The commitment to install a shortwall was made in late 1981 and the first panel commenced in August 1982. Between that time and June 1988, about 3.33 Mt (3.67 million st) of trona have been mined with the system from 15 panels. Annual average productivities have ranged from 818 t/shift (902 st per shift) in 1982 to 1.4 kt/t shift (1591 st per shift) in 1987. Overall, the system has produced an average of 1.3 kt/ shift (1450 st per shift). In April 1987, a method of mining the return air tailgate during shortwall retreat was tested (Fig. 2). The objective was to determine if a return airway could be established and maintained by mining a series of rooms and pillars about 7.6 m (25 ft) past the face support line. The method would allow a barrier pillar to be left between shortwall panels without requiring the mining of a separate return air tailgate.

"The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act Public Law 109-236) was passed by Congress in response to three major underground coal mine accidents in the United States that claimed the lives of 19 miners. The Act resulted in substantial changes in the underground coal industry relative to the use of technology for mine escape, rescue, disaster response and other areas where the lack of these technologies contributed to the fatalities caused by these tragedies. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the MINER Act, which makes it an opportune time to reflect on the events that led to its passage, the changes that have been made since then, and the work that remains to be done. As discussed below, the last decade has demonstrated tremendous cooperative efforts among mining operators, technology innovators, labor, The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and state regulators, resulting in substantial improvement of the technologies used for escape and rescue and noteworthy progress toward meeting many of the goals of the MINER Act. While the MINER Act and this article pertain primarily to coal mining, many of the technologies are equally applicable to any underground mining and have already found some acceptance outside of coal. TECHNOLOGY GAPS TARGETED BY THE MINER ACT The MINER Act addressed several technology challenges: • Problems with donning and switching between self-contained self-rescuers (SCSRs). • Poor visibility in smoke. • No wayfinding assistance for escape from the mine. • Limited breathable air supply. • Inability to locate trapped miners. • Inability to communicate with trapped miners. • Failure of mine seals. The MINER Act had several provisions that prescribed specific safety technologies intended to address these issues. Many of these were directed at post-accident technology requirements — an area in which Congress mandated additional technology investment. Specifically, the Act required mine operators to submit emergency response plans (ERPs) that contained provisions for implementing new or improved post-accident communications, tracking, lifelines, refuge alternatives and breathable air supplies along with training for emergency procedures and local coordination of emergency response. Most of the requirements were to be carried out within three years of the ratification of the MINER Act. In addition to these requirements for mine operators, the Act clarified and expanded NIOSH’s role and authority in enhancing the development of new mine safety technologies and expediting their commercial availability. The MINER Act also required NIOSH to develop research on refuge chambers, mine seals and the use of belt air and fire-retardant belts. Mine seals had to be upgraded and MSHA turned to NIOSH for applied research to establish the new explosion-resistance requirements. Progress toward closing the gaps."

Introduction Gold exploration in the Dominican Republic has not received much publicity. The fact is, however, that a continuous program has been underway for some time. For the past two years, the Restauracion area of the western Dominican Republic, near the Haitian border, has been the scene of mineral exploration by the Dominican Department of Mines geologists, and later by geologists of Rosario Dominicana. The latter is a state-owned gold mining company and operator of the Pueblo Viejo open-pit gold mine. The exploration is for mineral deposits with the goal of finding another Pueblo Viejo-type deposit. Geology Exploration is being carried out in the western central Cordillera, the backbone of the Island of Hispaniola. Geology consists of quartz veins and veinlets and ramifying stringers carrying pyrite, barite, minor amounts of copper, and significant amounts of gold in places. They are associated with regional faulting in a complex of Cretaceous beds of andesites, dacites, argillites, siltstones, and shales. They are intruded by tonalites, diorites, and gabbros. Lesser amounts of zinc-lead mineralization occur in some locations. The showings appear as disseminations along the faults. To date, the work has been mostly geologic mapping - 1 to 50,000 with details on a scale of 1 to 20,000 and 1 to 10,000-stream and soil lithogeochemistry, and geophysics. Trenching and sampling were used to follow possible vein extensions. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Los Candelones district that was taken over by Rosario Dominicana. Here is where drilling has been initiated in the past months. The first hole drilled showed assays of 21 g/t (0.6 oz per st). The second hole intersected an interesting oxidized zone that reminded observers of the original Pueblo Viejo oxidized zone. A third drill hole went deeper than 75 m (246 ft), the depth to which the first two holes had been scheduled. An assay of 50 g/t (1.46 oz per st) was cut during drilling. The presence of an oxidized zone of any vertical and horizontal extent is important. This gives rise to continued exploration, as the

For reasons of hydraulic design and constructability, water supply tunnel systems are often located relatively deep, in competent rock. Where the rock lies below a thick cover of water bearing soils, artificial ground freezing offers a low risk, cost-effective method of constructing access shafts. Several examples, in Kansas City, MO and in Brooklyn and Queens, NY, illustrate the use of freezing to provide structural support and ground water exclusion. In the case histories presented, the shafts range from 6m to 12m (20 to 40 ft) in diameter and soils vary from clays to boulder beds with depths in excess of 73m (240 ft) to competent bedrock. Where tunnels for infrastructure are designed to be driven in rock, vertical access may encounter a considerable thickness of overburden soils with groundwater. In such cases, shaft sinking problems are analogous to those confronted by mining engineers over 100 years ago. At that time, newly developed refrigeration machines were set to freeze the ground water and stabilize running sands. Although modern technology has refined our efforts, the basic features of the ground freezing to be described here are the same as those used in the last century. Vertical holes drilled on a circle surrounding the shaft site are equipped with leak-free steelpipes through which a refrigerated brine is circulated. In this manner, a frozen cylinder, seated in rock, is formed when the earth freezes between adjacent pipes. Shaft excavations take place inside a self-supporting, ground-water excluding structure. For mines, no better method of sinking production shafts through deepwater-bearing ground has yet been established. Indeed, major deposits of coal, potash, and salt would have remained inaccessible to this day were it not for the continued use of artificial ground freezing. If mine shaft freezing became relatively commonplace, early applications to civil engineering were few. Mussche and Waddington (1946) mention only five projects between 1892 and 1935; three of these relate to subway or vehicular tunnels in Paris, Antwerp, and (the most extensive) at five locations of the Moscow Metropolitan Railway development. "There is always a demand in the mining industry to improve the safety and efficiency of roof bolting. Since 2008, Anglo American and Fletcher® have been working together to develop a new roof bolter concept that is safer and more ergonomic while maintaining current production rates. The recognized types of machines currently used in South Africa are always under constant review for improvement; however, there are limitations to the current design. The majority of the machines in South Africa are the “Man in Position” roof bolters. There are currently over 200 of these roof bolters in South Africa, with the bulk of the machines being twin-boom units. When operated correctly, these machines are safe, versatile, reliable and productive. However, with the operators located close to the drilling and bolting operations, they can be exposed to operational hazards. In addition, the major amount of material handling can be quite difficult on an operator. Anglo American, with a desire to improve safety, approached Fletcher to develop a remote style machine with simplified controls that maintained the productivity of the twin-boom machines. After several prototypes, the current model was developed. The chassis was designed for better operator comfort. A dual mast drill module was implemented to reduce the total time to bolt a cut. A remote operator’s station was incorporated to remove the operator from the front of the machine. The design was all about producing a safe and ergonomic machine from front to rear. This paper will explain the evolution and technological advancements from earlier prototypes to the current production machine. INTRODUCTION With mining, especially coal extraction, comes the necessity of supporting the roof. Since the 1950’s, the primary method for roof support has been the use of roof bolts. Roof bolting is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in underground coal mining. In 2004, there were 3,405 injuries reported to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). Of those injuries, 17 percent were associated with bolting machines (593 injuries). The majority of the injuries resulted from rock falling from supported roof. However, injuries involving a part of the body being struck by, or caught between, during bolting and drilling occurred with relatively high frequency (Burgess and Steiner). Roof drilling and bolt installation is labor intensive and repetitive. These labor intensive and repetitive requirements can lead to cumulative trauma. Operators are expected to perform a considerable amount of lifting, carrying, bending, reaching and stretching. Back and shoulders become sore from bending and twisting to install bolts or lift and position drill steels, wrenches and bolts. Confined operator spaces also contribute to difficult and awkward working positions for the operators (Cornelius and Turin)."

The design of an ore-processing plant requires a high degree of cooperation among the geological, mining and metallurgical engineers. The purposes of this section are to provide mill design information most commonly needed by the mine planners and management, and to summarize the kinds of information that must be supplied to the mill designer to enable him to provide a suitable plant. 28.1-BASIS OF DESIGN NORMAN WEISS 28.1.1-SIZE OF PROJECT The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect, a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd without major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding and processing. Hours per shift also are an important factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the percentage lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into account. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure. but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as 10 yr, or as a specific daily capacity over the first 2 yr, next 4 yr, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 mi southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent.' where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. 28.1.2-EXPECTED LIFE The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis which, in turn, is based on many factors.' From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-yr project may be wasteful for a 5-yr operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grinding-the former may be found more economical for a 5-yr operation, and the other, more costly, method more economical for a 15 to 20-vi- life.

Introduction Ring roller mills are efficient size reduction machines embodying the following machine functions: 1) Size Reduction: from a feed size of 2 in. to various size products as fine as 400 mesh, or granulation from 2 in. to 6 mesh containing a minimum of fines. 2) Drying: fluid bed drying of wet feed materials. 3) Conveying: negative pressure air system results in dust-free conveying. 4) Beneficiation: liberation and removal of foreign materials from the auxiliary bottom discharge simultaneously while grinding. Operation Operation of the roller mill system, Figs. 78 and 79, is completely automatic. A feeder introduces raw material into the grinding chamber in the base of the roller mill at a rate determined by pressure variations within the roller mill as material is ground and air conveyed away. The feeder will be activated by the reduced static pressure and introduce unground material into the system, thereby maintaining a constant differential pressure. Plows located ahead of each grinding roll direct the material upward and between the grinding rolls and the bull ring where it is ground to size. The grinding rolls are free to swing out centrifugally, which forces them to bear upon and grind the raw material. Being free to pivot axially, the rolls automatically assume the proper position for grinding and need no adjustment to compensate for wear. Rotation of the rolls is by rolling contact. Once ground to size, material is swept out of the mill by the controlled air flow from the centrifugal main mill fan. Air suspended, the ground material passing through the adjustable spinner separator. In the separator, an accurate size classification is made which allows product-size material to be conveyed away from the roller mill while oversize material is returned internally for additional grinding. By varying the speed of the separator drive, more or less cyclonic action is achieved at this location, effectively controlling product size. Product sized material is removed from the airstream by the cyclone collector. Typically, a conveyor or product storage bin will be located to accept the product as it exits from the bottom of the cyclone collector.

"Tantalum, a heavy metal with characteristics such as superconductivity and high terminal resistance, nowadays is the most efficient material for production of capacitors, which are essential for production of small electronic applications like notebooks and cell-phones. It is one of the strategic resources for information societies. With supply extracted from Central Africa (Congo / DRC), China, Australia, and Canada, it can serve as an example for sustainability efforts in the management of non-renewable resources in Developing Countries, Newly Industrializing Countries and Industrialized Countries alike. The paper analyzes the life cycle of tantalum in its environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The first section highlights the importance of tantalum, showing a demand-driven market. The second section analyzes current and future supply. The third section tackles environmental and social impacts of tantalum mining in different legislations. The fourth section especially deals with the Case of the Democratic Republic of Congo since companies have been accused of participating in a civil ‘resource war’. Section five will draw conclusions for sustainable resource management. Written in an interdisciplinary manner, the article has a bearing on economics, especially on resource economics and new institutional economics, as well as on geography. It deals with questions such as security implications of physical scarcity in rapidly growing markets. In doing so it can, firstly, be shown that information exchange in combination with reputational risks lead to a shift in extraction activities from a Developing Country (DRC) to an Industrialized Country (Australia); i.e. a ‘race to the bottom’ does not take place. This, however, does not mean that market mechanisms work properly since information exchange (especially with China) is incomplete, moral hazard still prevails, and inadequate institutions hamper development processes in an exporting country like Congo. Any sustainable resource management for tantalum not only should foster gathering and exchanging better information on environmental and social impacts, but also incentives for upstream metal recycling in industry as well as support for governance processes in Developing Countries"

Two recently published papers describing the use of psychological tests for selection and placement of coal mine personnel have created considerable interest within the Coal Industry, one paper, published in the April 1957 "Mining Congress Journal," entitled "Personnel Evaluation and Training," discusses the use of tests by the Christopher Coal Company, The second paper, published in the "West -Virginia Coal Mining Institute's 1957 Report" and in the September 1957 "Coal Age," entitled "Testing to Select Better Personnel for Coal Mining Today," outlines Hanna Coal Company's test and selection procedures. Since these rather detailed sources are readily available, and to avoid repetition of the material in them, we will confine this paper to a very brief review of the essential steps already taken by these companies and a more extensive look at newer material. Briefly, the Personnel Managers, Mr. Harold L, Durrett and Mr. Albert M,. Rowe, of the Hanna Coal Company and Christopher Coal Company, in conjunction with Dr. Quin F, Curtis, Head of the Psychology Department of West Virginia University, developed two different groups oftests for coal mine personnel, The first group oftests was designed to assist in the selection of supervisors. These tests of the supervisory group were "The California Short Form Test of Mental Maturity - Advanced Series," which gave an I.Q. rating, and the second test is known as "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory," which measures several personality characteristics, These tests must be given, grade, and interpreted by a person trained in psychological testing. As a result of testing all of Christopher's supervisory employees (seventy in number) by this method, and then comparing the individual results with the individual ratings of the foremen on the job, a so-called foremen's scale was developed. If this resulting foremen's scale had been used to select the foremen who were rated as, the best men in on-the-job performance, it would have correctly identified seventy-four percent of that group.

Once considered the dowdy country cousins of the glamorous metallics, industrial minerals are shedding their old image. They are neither common nor easy and their time has come in an age of increasing specialization. Consider that of the 45 or so industrial minerals and rocks listed in [Table 1], almost three-quarters have ten or fewer significant suppliers (i.e., those individual countries contributing 2% or more of total world production); in more than half the cases, 85% of world production is accounted for by only five countries or fewer. Curiously, even materials that appear to be virtually ubiquitous like crushed rock and common salt have significant production vacuums. For example, there is a severe lack of sound aggregates along the US Gulf Coast and common salt production on a large scale is virtually absent in central Africa. These examples all underline the obvious, but acute truism that "The single most important fact about mineral resources is that they are not distributed equally over the world" (Flawn, 1966). Just as significant today is that human resources are not distributed equally over the world, and so arise some interesting commercial incongruities. In certain regions raw materials are plentiful but consumers are not, and without a market a mineral deposit is merely a geological curiosity. Elsewhere, there may be a market but no local raw material supply. For example, despite a huge market there is no or virtually no commercial production of chromite, diamonds, and manganese in the United States and Canada, nor phosphate rock, diamonds, rutile, and zirconium minerals in western Europe. In contrast, Australia with its small domestic market is the world's largest supplier of bauxite, diamonds, ilmenite, natural and synthetic rutile, and zircon; the same is true for South Africa which is a leading producer of chromite, manganese, diamonds, andalusite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon (Table 2). In the commercial world, Nature's uneven distribution is counterbalanced by deep sea international trade.

INTRODUCTION Square-set timbering of stopes developed from stull support methods because veins too wide for stulling were being mined. In general, the void caused by the stoping of the ore is filled with a system of interlocking timbers. Timber framework supports the wall rock, the mining operations, and provides access. A timbered stoping method can be used in all widths of veins at any dip. The timbering can be normal and parallel to the planes of the walls or at angles to these planes. Irregularly shaped ore bodies can be worked by timbered methods. Pinching or swelling of the vein will not adversely affect the method. Timbered stoping is especially advanta¬geous where weak ground is encountered in the vein or the wall rock. The ground is unsupported only until timber sets are stood. These stopes can be filled with sand or waste when desirable. The customary method of developing a square-set timbered stope with haulage drifts above and below and timbered raises on each endline is shown in Fig. 1. The drifts are timbered the full stoping length. The raises have two compartments with the manway and timber slide in one compartment and the chute in the other. The drifts and the raises cannot be widely spaced as handling timbers is an important consideration. Stoping can begin immediately above the drift timber and continue in both directions and upward from the raise. Breasting down each blast round for only one timber set laterally is the common practice. The blasted ore falls to a lower floor where it is slushed or trammed to the chute. Drilling can proceed on the upper floor while broken ore is being removed from the stope. As shown in Fig. 2, square-set timbering may be used in cut-and-fill stopes to support the back and walls until fill is added. There are various ways of developing an ore block for timbered stoping. Fig. 3 depicts the situation for the main haulage in the vein with an intermediate drift separated from it by a sill pillar. The ore is slushed into the chute connecting the two drifts. The situation in Fig. 4 is identical to that in Fig. 3 except that no sill pillar is used. In Fig. 5, the haulage drift development is done in the footwall with crosscuts driven to intersect the ore body. The intermediate drift development is above the crosscuts with a minimal sill pillar. The main bottleneck in timbered stoping is in the timbering process. Drilling in the stope is generally held up while timbering is done. Two or three men are re¬quired to do the timbering and an additional one or two men are needed to transport and raise or lower the tim¬ber. Good organization is essential to timbering. Skill must be exercised in standing the timber to support the ground and still maintain good production. "INTRODUCTION The Lisbon Valley Mining Co LLC (LVMC) operates the Lisbon Valley Mine located in SE Utah. The mine includes 3 open pits, 150-acre heap leach pad, and solvent extraction electro winning plant (SX/EW). Approximately 25MM tons of ore has been mined since 2005. The ore is stacked on the leach pad to an average height of 55 feet and occurs as a blend of crushed material (minus 2”) and run-of-mine (minus 24”). The host rocks include Dakota and Burro Canyon Sandstones. Copper occurs finely disseminated in this material at an average grade of 0.46%. Minerology is 63% sulfide, 27% oxide, and 10% insoluble. Total inventory mined through 2016 is approximately 230 MM lbs. METALLURGICAL CONSTRAINTS Copper production is constrained by areas of low permeability ore and geochemical issues, including acid consumption. The intrinsic permeability the ore ranges from 10-2 to 1 Darcy. This permeability does not permit sufficient aeration by natural convection, therefore oxygen transport is largely limited to the mass of oxygen that can remain dissolved in leachates. As a result, greater than 50MM lbs of copper remains in inventory and occurs secondary sulfides, including chalcocite, covellite, and bornite. BIOLEACHING FUNDAMENTALS Due to the higher activation energies of secondary sulfides, notably covellite and bornite, a strong oxidant is needed to remove an electron from the metal-sulfide lattice and release the copper cation into the sulfate solution. This process occurs most efficiently using the strong oxidant ferric iron (Fe3+). Ferrous iron can be oxidized to ferric iron by oxygen via chemical oxidation or biologically; which was measured to occur 500,000 times faster when using microbes versus oxygen.1 The microbes that oxidize ferrous iron (Fe2+) to ferric iron are naturally abundant and will develop biomass when appropriate conditions and nutrients present themselves. Most nutrients are provided by the ore/irrigation (P,N,Mg, Ca & Fe2+) while the others (O2 and CO2) are provided by air. In most cases, oxygen transfer is the rate limiting step during copper sulfide leaching. 1 Lacey & Lawson 1970 FORCED AERATION SYSTEM DESIGN This paper describes LVMC’s efforts to bioleach the remaining inventory by forced aeration. Two basic aeration systems were installed and tested including vertical wells and horizontal piping. Vertical System The vertical system was installed using the mine’s blast hole drilling rig. Wells were constructed using 4” high-density polyethylene (HDPE) connected to 4” polyvinyl chloride (PVC) screens similar to conventional bioventing wells. Ore samples were collected at each well location to characterize the spatial distribution of the remaining inventory along with fines (minus 200 sieve), pH (acid consumption), and iron. A block model of each analyte was developed and mapped in 3D."

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. It measures 200 x 200 mm (8- x 8-in.) inside (instead of 300 x 300 mm or 12 x 12 in. in Bond ball mill). Just like the Bond

The important role that mineral aggregates assume today in the construction and chemical industries is best attested to by the astronomical tonnage figures for the annual production of aggregates in the United States as reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in their "Minerals Yearbook." For 1965, latest publication available, the tabulation shows a total of 1,716,000,000 tons made up of 30,000,000 slag, 908,000,000 sand and gravel, and 778,000,000 crushed stone. A much more favorable statistical position for slag can be established by listing the world-wide tonnage. According to Dr. A, W. Lee, Director, British Slag Federation, in a paper presented before the 8th Annual conference of the British Institute of Works and Highway Superintendents, he estimates that the probable world consumption of slag is in the order of 100,000,000 tons showing--Great Britain with 10,000,000 tons, Germany, 15,000,000 tons, France, 1$000,000 tons and the United States with 30,000,000 tons. Thus it is seen that the United States accounts for almost one-third of the world's consumption of slag and the 3 west European powers another third.
