A gas jet was blown through submerged nozzles to stir the bath in the presence and absence of slag. Mixing and mass transfer rates were then studied. Water and kerosene (10% by volume) were used to simulate the metal and slag phases respectively in the cold model. The mixing time (Tmix), defined at 99.66% bath homogeneity level, increased with bath height and decreased with an increase in the gas injection rate. Its value in the model vessel was related to gas flow rate (Q), bath weight (W), and bath height (H) by, Tmix = 4.39Q-0.73W0.24H1.12. Inclusion of the slag phase increased Tmix by about 16% and the mass transfer parameter, [(Reloc,r)0.25(Ret)0.32], values by about 32%. Mass transfer rates were higher near the bath surface and in the gas-liquid plume region. They increased with gas flow rate but decreased with an increase in bath height. The relationship, K Q0.08, showing derived mass transfer coefficient (K) dependence on the gas injection rate (Q) was established. The proportionality constant in the equation varied with gas flow rate and sample location.

The DOPA process (Direct Oxidation of a Precursor Alloy) was used to prepare ceramic powders based on doped SnO2 and ZnO. The DOPA process consists essentially in the direct oxidation of a homogeneous precursor alloy. A unique advantage of this process is its rather benign environmental impact since no dangerous reactants are used and no harmful by-products are generated. Only oxygen and the alloy metals participate on the chemical reaction to produce the multi-component oxide. Homogeneous alloys of niobium, cobalt and chromium doped tin have been prepared. The molten metal alloy is atomised in air using a double fluid nozzle to produce metallic powders. A subsequent thermal treatment is carried out to fully oxidise the sprayed metal alloy powders. These raw powders are used to prepare a ceramic powder through a mill homogenisation and atomisation process. The ceramic powder is then uniaxially compacted in disc shape and sintered in an oxidising atmosphere. The resulting sintered bodies are metallised on their flat faces and the cylindrical surface is passivated using lead free glass enamel. These ceramics present excellent semiconducting properties with non-linear (non-ohmic) characteristics. The DOPA process is found to be an attractive procedure to obtain ceramic powders for the preparation of SnO2 varistors.

Metallurgical industries are generally big producers of solid residues of various kinds. In contrast with the past where environmental sensibilities were not so elevated and the accumulated mass of these residues were not considerable, these days the solid residues are everywhere scrutinized among others in term of their harmful environmental impact and as possible materials for valuable elements extraction or secondary utilisation. As a case study, the present paper gives an overview of the solid residues discharged by the metallurgical industry in Albania for the last tens of years. The results of two monitoring study on the solid residues of copper, iron and ferrochromium producing industries are also summarized. The first deals with the origin, quantities and chemical composition of these residues and the second one with the impact of harmful ingredients of these residues in the environment. Some methods for the processing of these solid residues are also proposed in order to ensure a clean environment and to make not just possible but also economically viable their secondary utilisation. This work is part of a bigger cooperation project among local institutions and foreign expert companies such as Flogen Technologies Inc and other in various countries that will not only monitor the situation but will also develop appropriate technologies for treatment of these specific residues.

Aiming at many controversial reports on Raman spectral pattern of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution appearing in the literature and the absence of its standard pattern, the comparative investigations on Raman spectral pattern of saturated solution of ammonium heptamolybdate tetra hydrate were done. The results showed that the main vibrant frequencies of Raman spectral pattern of the saturated solution were in good agreement with those introduced in the literature, and that the intensity ratio (4.4) of the strongest peak to the second strongest peak recorded in Raman spectrum of the saturated solution had three obvious characteristics: it was greater than each of the results (ranging from 3.7 to 1.3) reported in the literature, much closer to that (4.7) of crystal and well conformed to the change rule of Raman spectra occurring in the process of the first-step polymerization of acidified molybdate solution. It was found that Raman spectrum of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution was determined by not only the main vibrant frequencies but also the intensity ratio, which is also the crucial result in this study. The comparative investigations indicate that the pattern of Raman spectrum of the saturated solution is the standard pattern of Raman spectrum of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution essentially. The affirmed standard pattern is reliable and can be used to the identification of heptamolybdate ion in aqueous solution, applied in the research of the equilibrium of acidified molybdate solution and the exploration of the best technologic condition for the production of high quality heptamolybdates.

The feasibility of several pyrochemical approaches-for separating non-radioactive constituents from ICPP HLW calcine were examined. The removal of aluminum as AICI3 from aluminia calcine was successfully demonstrated. The examination of pyrochemical processes to remove non-radioactive constituents, primarily aluminium, zirconium, calcium and fluorine, from zirconia calcine showed that fluorine removal was required in order to chlorinate the calcine. A molten calcium chloride wash, a calcium reduction, and. a sulfuric acid treatment were examined as possible zirconia calcine pretreatment options for fluorine removal. Fluorine removal from simulated ICPP zirconia calcine was demonstrated by both a CaCl2 wash method and a sulfuric acid treatment method. X-ray fluorescence analysis indicated that greater than 97% of the fluorine can be removed by either method. Fluorine removal by a calcium reduction using an alloying agent, zinc, or a calcium reduction using, a filtration separation were also demonstrated, but the efficiencies of fluorine removal were considerably less ranging from 50 to 90%. Regeneration of CaCl2 from the salt and oxide residues of the CaCl2 wash experiments was also demonstrated 'by an aqueous dissolution method. From the salt residue, 85% or more of the CaCl2 was recovered and contained little if any CaF2 or CaO. From the oxide residue close to 100% of the CaC12 was recovered. Because of the overall success of the CaCI2 wash, it was determined to be the preferred fluorine removal process. The sulfuric acid treatment to remove fluorine is effective, but the proposed overall flowsheet has not' been adequately demonstrated.

Liquid phase tends to migrate from an aggregate of solid particles immersed in a liquid phase into another aggregate composed of the same solid particles and liquid but with smaller particle sizes and/or lower volume fraction of the liquid phase. This type of liquid migration in a two phase system can be attributed to the driving force for the system to decrease its total interfacial energy. With liquid migration pressure as a convenient measure for the total interfacial energy of a solid-liquid two-phase system, liquid migration can be attributed to the existence of liquid migration pressure gradient in the two-phase system. The kinetics of liquid migration is of great practical importance for many industrial processes, one of which is the liquid phase sintering of functionally graded WC-Co composite materials. During liquid phase sintering, WC-Co composite forms a typical solid-liquid two-phase system where solid particles of WC are immersed in liquid Co. For a sample composed of two layers of WC-Co with the same Co content but different WC particle size, Co gradient will be formed during liquid phase sintering; while for a sample composed of two layers of WC-Co with the same WC particle size but different Co content, the Co gradient will be eliminated during liquid phase sintering. The formation and elimination of Co gradient are controlled by the liquid migration pressure gradient. This paper describes a numerical simulation of the kinetic process of the formation and elimination of cobalt gradient.

The recovery and recycling of low concentration metal and other ions has traditionally been carried out using adsorption or ion exchange processes which, however, become uneconomical at higher concentrations, such as those that occur with many intermediate or waste streams where recycling is now being required. This paper describes the development of a process based on non-dispersive solvent extraction for the recovery of chromium (VI) from electroplating rinse water. During the chromium plating of steel, the concentration of chromium (VI) in the rinse bath rises to concentrations in the order of 100 mg/L when it becomes unusable and is then disposed of. The aim of this work was to investigate processes for recovery and recycling of the chromium in the rinse bath. The recovered chromium is required to be concentrated and purified before reuse. Tertiary amines have been shown capable of concentrating and purifying the chromium (VI) in solution. However, solvent extraction processes that have been applied to the recovery and reuse of metals from waste streams have had only limited success in the past, primarily because of the relatively high solvent losses when existing contacting equipment is used on low feed concentrations. Attempts to eliminate losses by immobilizing these complexing agents on substrates have not been successful. In order to control the losses and maintain specificity, a hollow fibre-contained liquid membrane has recently been trailed in a pilot plant to recover chromium from chromium plating waste streams. Details of the trial and modeling of the results are presented, and show that the level of losses is significantly reduced. However, issues relating to fouling still need to be addressed. This type of equipment has many applications in the recovery and recycling of a range of materials in the manufacturing processes.
