Bull Lake is one of several saline lakes situated a few miles north of Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyo. (figs. and 2).. The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary investigations of sodium sulfate deposits in many of the lakes and performed detailed work on Bull Lake. This investigation consisted of drilling 11 vertical holes through salt beds using diamond core bits and Iwan-type auger bits. Bull Lake lies in a shallow, closed depression in loosely consolidated sand. The salt beds, ranging in thickness from 2.5 to 26 feet, occur above a thick bed of shale of upper Cretaceous age. The salts appear to have been deposited in the lake from surface and subsurface drainage. The source of salt is undoubtedly the enclosing sedimentary rock's exposed to the west of the basin. Sodium sulfate in the deposits probably is present as mirabilite or Glauber salt (Na2SO4-10H2O). Chief impurities in the deposits arc mud and sand. Other soluble salts present average approximately 1 percent combined. Cores from the 11 holes were analyzed in the Bureau of Mines laboratories at Salt Lake City. Drilling totaled 512 feet. Results of analyses are given in the appendix.

TO give a concise history of the Woman's Auxiliary of the A. I. M. E. is a difficult task and much interesting information must needs be omitted. The organization has grown and evolved so much from its early simple beginning that it seems best to adopt the technique of some of our modern novelists and begin with the latest development. As the headquarters of the A. I. M. E. is in New York, it follows that the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. necessarily has also its central office and government there. The affairs of the organization are administered by a duly-elected president and five vice- presidents, a treasurer, recording secretary, and corresponding secretary and a board of directors, the personnel of which includes each chairman of a section or an elected or nominated representative who is able to attend the monthly meetings of the board and correspond with the section for which she acts, and the chairmen of the five standing national committees, i. e. Educational Fund, Library, Emergency, Membership and Hospitality. The chairmen of these committees are all responsible to the president and board of directors and their activities must be indorsed with their approval.

The feasibility study of Escondida Norte (ENorte), recommended a slope angle design for the Final Pit. But, according to the experience obtained with the slope adjacent to the West wall of ENorte, in which Compañia Minera Zaldívar (CMZ) gained in its phase 4, a slope of similar geotechnical characteristics will be exposed in the West Wall of Phase 1 (Premine) and of the Final Pit, with an interramp angle 53º and with very good stability results. In this regard, Minera Escondida Ltd. (MEL) performed a study of the slope angles for the phases mentioned and according to this delivered the results of this evaluation, the recommendations and/or the necessary conclusions in the design to ensure that the slopes are stable enough and may enable safe operational management of them.

The use of a suspended growth system of T. ferrooxidans attached in a film to individual particles of bentonite and operated as a sequencing batch reactor has been shown to be a practical way of oxidizing ferrous iron in acid mine drainage. This component followed by limestone neutralization is both a technically and economically feasible approach to the treatment of these wastewaters in comparison to existing and proposed methods. The advantages, in addition to less expense, are greater safety, acceptable treatment at a lower pH, lower solids buildup, less danger of overtreatment, and greater flexibility in operational characteristics. In this report data on the continuous bench scale operation of the system under a variety of conditions shows sustained levels of oxidation in excess of 9%. A cost analysis projects capital and operating costs of $80/1,000 m3 of wastewater.

"INTRODUCTION Considerable interest has been shown in the prospective use of Diesel-powered haulage equipment in both coal and non-coal mines. Foreign technical magazines have devoted considerable space to discussions of the use of Diesel locomotives in European mines and some mention of it has been made in technical papers in the United States. The Bureau of Mines has extensively tested the gases produced in the exhaust of the Diesel engine under various atmospheres and conditions of use; it has established a schedule of tests for permissibility of Diesel engines for use in underground coal mines, including, gassy or dusty mines.This publication provides information as to the successful use of Diesel-powered equipment underground workings in the United States and Europe, briefly discusses the characteristics of some of the toxic gases found in the exhaust of Diesel engines, and points out that Diesel-powered equipment can be used with reasonable safety in underground minus if necessary and entirely feasible precautions are taken."

"Results from mathematical models and plant experiments are combined to quantify the effect of transverse depressions and oscillation marks on heat transfer in the continuous casting mold. A heat transfer model has been developed to calculate transient heat conduction within the solidifying steel, coupled with the steady-state heat conduction with the continuous casting mold wall. The model features a detailed treatment of the interfacial gap between the shell and mold, including mass and momentum balances on the solid and liquid powder layers. The model predicts the solidified shell thickness down the mold, temperature in the mold and shell, thickness of the resolidified and liquid powder layers, heat flux distribution down the mold, mold water temperature rise, ideal taper of the mold walls, and other related phenomena. The important effect of non-uniform distribution of superheat is incorporated using the results from previous 3-D turbulent fluid flow calculations within the liquid cavity. Results from plant experiments confirm that transverse surface depressions and oscillation marks form at the meniscus and move down the mold. Measurements of mold thermocouple temperatures and breakout shell thickness were used to calibrate the models. The results indicate that the surface depressions and oscillation marks are filled with mold flux, but still have a significant effect on decreasing heat transfer. The predicted mold temperature fluctuations are consistent with measurements. If the depressions become filled with air, their effect is greatly increased. These results should be useful in the difficult task of interpreting transient mold thermocouple signals for on-line quality monitoring.IntroductionMany different types of intermittent surface defects on steel slabs arise during initial solidification in the mold of the. continuous casting machine. These defects include deep oscillation marks, surface depressions, and cracks. They may lead to quality problems, such as slivers, in the final rolled product. In severe cases, breakouts may occur, where liquid steel bursts through a thin section of the shell and drains over the casting machine below the mold."

A common problem in the mining industry is that company exploration groups operate in relative isolation to the rest of the company; resulting in poor knowledge transfer (Qureshi and Briggs, 2006) and often priority conflicts with mine geology, operations and project departments. In recognition of this problem, Newcrest created a Minerals Division responsible for stewardship and governance of mineral assets across the value chain from reconnaissance to rehabilitation. It was recognised at an early stage that effective collaboration both internally and externally would be required to improve decision making, deliver faster cycle times and improve governance.Collaboration in companies is generally associated with the introduction of new IT functions. However, modern IT-based collaboration systems and practices are relatively simplistic compared to the long-standing practices associated with collaboration and knowledge management in science and engineering disciplines such as geology and mining.The authors of this paper have started a trial of a 12-point plan for effective collaboration, which recognises that significant efficiencies can be gained and barriers to future success removed if more effective collaboration can be achieved between science and engineering divisions in a company along with external professionals and with the collective intelligence (Tapscott and Williams, 2006) of the outside world. To meet growth aspirations some companies, like Newcrest Mining Ltd, are adopting this comprehensive, step change approach by moving from a closed model the isolates mine geologists to an open and collaborative model that uses IT visualisation systems strategically. The paper describes how an open model provides people with the right work environment and the right information at the right time, which will help individuals and workgroups to work more collaboratively day-to-day. The aim is to achieve speed, focus and mitigate risk through an environment where everyone and anyone can contribute effectively (Cisco, 2008).

The purpose of the cut is to provide a free face to which the remainder of a development or breasting round can break. The results of field testing in drifts and at a quarry face were used as a basis for a description of the rock breakage and flushing mechanism in the cut. It was concluded that the important features of a cut design are proper hole spacing, sufficient relief volume, drilling accuracy and relief holes slightly longer than the planned length of the round. The void space provided by the relief holes should be about 15% of the cut volume, with more required in weak, highly fissured rocks. The importance of drilling accuracy increases with round length, an error being magnified by the small blasthole spacing. The first hole pulls only about 20% of the round length, 4-6 holes having to be fired before the cut is pulled close to its design depth. The first four blastholes should be fired with a minimum inter-hole delay of 100 ms to provide progressive relief of burden and avoid the superimposition of ground vibrations. The earliest-firing charge should be closest to the relief area and act laterally, while the first of the vertically-fired charges to be detonated should be the uppermost. An uneven gas distribution through the burden layers inside a blast furnace (BF) results in abnormal gas resistance or pressure changes. Rapid variations in the abnormal gas resistance will lead to the occurrence of channeling. A visualization technology mainly made of pressure distribution was developed to predict BF channeling phenomena in this study. The real-time data of BF shaft pressure was used to create a 3D visual model by neural network algorithms and 3D real-time BF pressure changes were observed. The root mean square deviation (RMSD) of the BF shaft pressure was used as an index to set up the predicting criteria of channeling occurrence with the opening of BF Annular Gap Element (AGE), and a predicting system based on the criteria was built. The two criteria for the channeling alarm are the RMSD of the BF shaft pressure (> 0.15 kg/cm2 ) at the upper two levels, and the AGE opening being greater than 60%. This system has been installed in the China Steel Corporation (CSC) BFs, and the test results showed that a prediction can be obtained 8 to 16 min ahead of channeling allowing sufficient time for the operator to adjust the BF operation in order to avoid the occurrence of channeling.

The conventional Canadian oil sand processing, the Clark Rowe process, is associated with many risks for the environment and high energy costs. To recover the bitumen from the oil sand (tar sand), large quantities of water have to be heated up and mixed with caustic soda and the oil sand. During this process, tailings with stabilized clay colloids are formed and dumped in tailings ponds. To avoid these disadvantages, a new, non-aqueous extraction process is to be established. Organic solvents are used instead of water and caustic soda to mobilize the bitumen from the sand-clay mixture. Pressure filtration, washing and steam pressure filtration are part of the new concept. A mixture of organic solvents and the oil sand is first pressure filtrated in a nutsch filter until a saturation level of one is obtained. After the cake has been formed, the filter cake is washed with organic solvent to flush the bitumen loaded solvent out of the cake. The following steam pressure filtration mechanically and thermally removes the remaining volatile components of the solvents from the filter cake. The filtrates from the pressure filtration, the washing phase and partly from steam pressure filtration are subsequently thermally treated to recover the organic solvents and obtain a higher bitumen concentration in the mixture. This mixture is then lead to an upgrader to win synthetic crude oil (SCO). The recovery of bitumen in the conventional hot water extraction process based on the Clark Rowe process can, in highly optimized plants, achieve between 88 and 92 %. Variation of oil sand properties leads to an actual range of between 80 and 90 % of bitumen recovery. With the alternative process based on organic solvents, the bitumen recovery exceeds the recovery of the conventional process by up to 16 percentage points. The composition of the two organic solvents in the first step of forming a suspension with the oil sand is important. The aromatic component is crucial for liberating and solving the asphaltenes, which tend to flocculate. The order of the two components of organic solvents is also important in the washing step. The paraffinic component is essential to achieve successful steam pressure filtration with respect to fast steam breakthrough and a filter cake free from organic compounds, as a result of its lower boiling point. In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control f anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/ These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating before a dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

HIS note reports the existence of several new scandium intermetallic compounds of the A2B and AB stoichiometries where the A element is scandium and the B element is from group VIII or IB of the periodic table. Alloys were arc melted from high-purity materials using 2-g charges. Typical lot analyses for the materials used are given in Table I. Chemical analyses were not made on the alloys as there was little or no weight loss on melting. After annealing the specimens for 14 days at 600°C and water quenching, metallographic and X-ray techniques were used to determine the occurrence of the various phases. Table II lists the relevant data for the A2B phases. The Ti2Ni structure,2 has ninety-six atoms in a face-centered cubic cell, whilst the Al2Cu structure is body-centered tetragonal.3 The occurrence and stability of the various A2B type phases in transition metal alloy systems has recently been considered by Nevitt.4 The Ti2 Ni-type phases occur over a relatively narrow range of radius ratios from 1.14-1.26 with A partners mainly from the titanium group and B partners predominantly from the cobalt group. This suggests that both a favorable relative size of the atoms and a favorable electron concentration are necessary conditions for the existence of this structure type. A12Cu-type phases involving Ti group elements as A partners are formed with B partners from the cobalt and nickel groups, predominantly the latter, and have a higher radius ratio (1.27-1.29) than the Ti2Ni-type phases. The occurrence of both Sc2Pd and Sc2Co can be rationalized in terms of these considerations but SczNi is anomalous because of its high radius ratio. The radius ratios are calculated from the Goldschmidt CN12 radii and it might be postulated that the scandium atom is reduced in size in the compound. Unfortunately the apparent atomic size of scandium in the compound cannot be calculated from a knowledge of the structure and lattice dimensions. The crystal structure of the Sc2Au compound could not be identified from the powder diffraction pattern, but it is interesting to note that it is isostructural with a series of A2Au phases where A is a rare earth element.5 Pertinent information concerning the AB phases found in this investigation is given in Table 111. All the phases have the ordered bcc CsCl structure. The occurrence and stability of CsC1-type phases have recently been discussed by Dwight,7 who concludes that the relative sizes of the atoms do not appear to be a controlling factor (the radius ratios of all the known phases vary between 0.985 and 1.439) but that the occurrence of the phase is predominantly dependent on the relative positions of the A and B partners in the periodic table. As a measure of the stability of a given CsCl phase it has been customary to define a lattice contraction on alloying, DAB — dAB, where DAB is the AB interatomic spacing as calculated from the Goldschmidt CN8 radii and dAB is the AB interatomic distance in the compound (= v3/2 ao). Values of the parameter DscB -dScB for the compounds found in this investigation are given in column 5 of Table III and are plotted in Fig. 1. If the lattice contraction does in fact reflect the stability of a phase then Fig. 1 shows two very interesting trends when the position of the B partner in the periodic table is considered. Firstly, within any given group the stability increases in order on going from the first to third long period. Secondly, within any given period the stability increases in order as the B partner is taken from the copper, nickel, and cobalt groups. In the case of the second long period, the lattice contraction reaches a maximum at ScRh and then decreases to ScRu. The same trend could

Between April 2000 and April 2002, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Division of Exploration and Mining has led 6 research expeditions totalling 160 days ship time in waters of Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Indonesia and Australia. Five expeditions were undertaken aboard the Australian research vessel Franklin following successful competitive research proposals, and the sixth used the Indonesian vessel Baruna Jaya VIII (see Table 1). In addition, two CSIRO participants joined JOIDES Resolution for the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 193 in the Manus Basin of PNG. The major scientific objective underpinning these expeditions was to locate and study present-day seafloor and sub-seafloor hydrothermal ore-forming activity in order to develop improved methods of exploring for ancient mineral deposits on land that originally formed by similar processes. The research has been supported financially by a number of Australian-based mineral companies, by Australian international aid agencies, and by appropriation funds from CSIRO, and was conducted in collaboration with researchers from Australia, Indonesia, Portugal, New Zealand, United States of America, South Korea, and the host nations. Building upon earlier successes in the 1986-1997 PACLARK-PACMANUS programs in the Woodlark and Manus Basins of PNG, we have sought to examine a wider range of geological settings in which ancient orebodies are inferred to have formed, including both volcanic and sediment-hosted environments. We have now visited volcanic arcs, fore-arc and triple-junction related submarine volcanoes, and back arc basins associated with convergent plate margins in the SW Pacific and SE Asia, as well as conceptual Mississippi-Valley-type targets associated with warm seeps at passive margins in the Great Australian Bight (see Figure 1). Surveys ranged from northern Sulawesi via far western Bismarck volcanic arc near PNG-Indonesia border, through the eastern Manus Basin and the Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni chain in PNG, the western Solomon Islands festoon, the San Cristobal arc, parts of the Vitiaz arc, to the northern and southern New Hebrides arc in the Solomons and Vanuatu.

One of the major hazards in underground coal mining is fire. The inherent hazard of fire is exaggerated by the nature of coal mining restricted areas, the highly combustible nature of coal itself, and a potential for explosive concentrations or dust and gas in the air it becomes imperative therefore to make every effort to eliminate the causes of fires, while providing the most effective means possible to control and extinguish those fires which may occur it has been demonstrated by prior work that the problem of control increases in proportion to the time necessary to institute control procedures. There are several areas of underground coal mining with obvious fire potential. Some of these, like belt heads, have reliantly undergone improvements in standby fire control devices Others, although having fire suppression systems available to them, have not received as complete a systematic study of their problems. Face machinery, particularly those without a water supply, falls in this latter category.

I DESIRE to present this evening a few notes from the standpoint of a manufacturer upon the subject of tests of iron for structural purposes; not that I have any new facts to which to call your attention, but rather a statement of a few of the objectionable features of the present modes of operation, showing the absolute necessity of important and very radical changes. At the present time, as most of you are well aware, proposals for materials are accompanied by certain specifications as to quality and tests to which the manufactured article must conform. Evolved in many cases from the inner consciousness of some one more expert in theory than in practice, we find a few of the specifications to be good, many bad, and some indifferent. Appended are specimens of specifications of the most prominent engineers and railroad companies, which may be taken as representing the best and most intelligently framed specifications which we now have, arid yet in some pints scarcely satisfactory, owing to misunderstanding of tests as now made. To show the very varied opinions held as to proper quality of iron for bridge-work, I give the tests of two lots of fron made by inspectors with the results, which were referred to the maker with the following commensts : Lot No. 1. This report describes the exploration and recent utilization studies the Bureau of Mines conducted on the Iron King, Chambers, and Dry Camp chromite deposits in the John Day district, Grant County, Oreg. The field investigations were undertaken during parts of 1939 and 1942 to determine the tonnage and grade of chromite in the district that could be utilized as a war reserve for the steel industry. As a result of the Bureau's field work, which included construction of 9 miles of access road, 6,204 feet of diamond drilling, 195 channel samples, and 1,020 linear feet of trenching, an ore reserve of 208,000 tons of 22-percent chromic oxide was indicated in the 3 deposits. Less than 1,000 tons of this ore has been mined since the field work was completed because the 2 largest deposits are submarginal in grade and there is as yet no incentive to develop and mine the ore. Since the war, however, the Bureau has been seeking means of utilizing the ore. Two methods of utilization that show promise are direct smelting of the ore in an electric furnace and use of the chromite for making refractory brick.

An analysis of coal slurry pipelines was presented in our May 1976 study, Route Specific Cost Comparisons: Unit Trains, Coal Slurry Pipelines and Extra High Voltage Transmission (4]. The present study extends that analysis. The earlier work included technical and economic cost descriptions of the black Mesa and ETSI pipelines as well as some hypothetical pipeline routes. Water problems, safety and environment, required resources, and labor impacts were discussed at some length. Additionally, pipeline impacts on competing railroads, slurry-rail comparisons, and cost escalation. were analyzed. The difference in pipeline profitability to an owner-operator versus a promoter-builder was suggested. These aspects are not redone in this study. Here, we present a synopsis of the previous results and a general statement of coal slurry pipelines. Extensions of the arguments are presented where they appear warranted. New material is developed in the area of pipeline branching and tapping. This would appear necessary if slurry pipelines are to function as more than private lines; if they are, for example, to be responsive to common carrier requirements.

O sistema MgO-NiO é um dos importantes sistemas para o entendimento das reações metal-escória na elaboração das ligas de à base níquel. As ligas à base de níquel usualmente apresentam adições de magnésio com o intuito de melhoria da plasticidade destas o que permite o seu processamento através de processos de conformação mecânica. Neste trabalho foi realizada a modelagem termodinâmica deste sistema utilizando o modelo de células de Kapoor-Frohberg-Gaye e o módulo PARROT® do pacote Thermo-Calc® com objetivo de complementar o banco de dados SLAG®. Como resultado foi obtido um conjunto de parâmetros termodinâmicos que descrevem as fases deste sistema.
