Liquid epoxy and polyurethanes are an excellent choice for whatever the aggressiveness of the substance transported and whatever the harmful outside influences, maximum protection is required. They can be used as coatings on all kind of pipelines varying from the mainline coating to the field joint coating. Compared with traditional systems like dual layer FBE and 3-layer polyolefin there are some benefits to be considered like easiness of repairs, amount of coats, application temperature and film thickness. The interior coating renders the pipe surface so much smoother that considerable savings can be realized in pump stations. Apart from the interior of the pipeline, the industry is faced with new challenges like higher operating temperatures of lines and an emphasis on product benefits in order to save money. A hydrogeologic characterization and impact analysis was performed for a proposed quarry at the Hitch Rack Ranch located in the Little Turkey Creek watershed southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Continuous multiple channel tubing, nested piezometers, stream flow measurements, and mapping of known seeps were used to define the three-dimensional potentiometric distribution and areas of groundwater recharge and discharge. Water balance considerations, mass balance calculations, and potentiometric response to earth tides and barometric fluctuations confirmed that the granite fracture system in the ridge area of the proposed quarry has an extremely low bulk hydraulic conductivity resulting in minimal groundwater discharge to sustain the baseflow of Little Turkey Creek. The Little Turkey Creek valley forms the major conduit for groundwater flow exiting from the upper part of watershed underlain by granite. This conclusion has significant implications with respect to mine planning to minimize projected impacts to the hydrologic system and preserve this recharge component to downgradient Denver Basin sedimentary deposits.

"Synthetic Aperature Sonar (SAS) is a powerful tool for ultra-high resolution marine survey. The Kongsberg HiSAS system deployed on the HUGIN AUV has a rangeindependent resolution of 3x3 cm for sonar image and ~10x10cm for the interferometric bathymetry product [1]. This resolution is achievable for areas up to 50 km2 on a single survey mission providing huge multi-attribute datasets. This technology, originally designed for military and oil-industry applications, has the potential to revolutionize scientific seafloor mapping. The extreme resolution of this technique allows for deposit mapping in and around seafloor hydrothermal systems, including the discovery of extinct venting structures. By clearly distinguishing between volcanic and hydrothermal landscapes based on features below the resolution of conventional multibeam systems, SAS enables an entirely new level of hydrothermal deposit survey. Additionally due to the extreme resolution of this survey technology, repeat survey and change detection should allow centimeter-scale changes in deposit morphology to be routinely detected over an entire hydrothermally venting region. In collaboration with the EU funded MIDAS project, the Centre for Geobiology at the University of Bergen will deploy the HUGIN AUV this summer at two distinct shallow venting systems on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system. The AUV will collect repeat bathymetry at the Jan Mayen Vent Field, and extend the SAS coverage to include newly discovered venting sites. We will present the preliminary findings of this expedition, including the first deposit estimations made from full-resolution SAS mosaics."

The stress response We are born with the stress response, which is a survival instinct, sometimes called the "fight or flight" response. When approached by a tiger in the jungle, our ancestors would perceive danger and prepare to fight or run. The body prepares for the fight or flight response in a number of ways. The bloodstream brings extra glucose and oxygen (fuel) to the heart, the sense of pain is dulled, and memory and thinking improve. The pupils dilate for better vision and the lungs take in more oxygen, while heart rate and blood pressure increase. Body hairs become erect, as puffed-out hair makes an animal look bigger and more dangerous. Once the perceived danger is gone - we have run fast enough to get away from the tiger or won the fight - the body returns to normal functions. Unfortunately, civilization gives us too many opportunities to experience this response. If activated too often, it can create wear and tear on the body, which may lead to injury and illness. Chronic and traumatic stress There are two key types of stress: chronic stress and traumatic stress. Both types can cause both physical and psychological symptoms. Chronic stress builds up from the day-to-day hassles. Traumatic stress results from a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a mine disaster, or the sudden death of a loved one. Chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of a number of health problems including heart disease, depression, back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Traumatic stress may lead to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Miners may experience both chronic and traumatic stress in their work.

Nesse artigo, foram desenvolvidos experimentos que visam determinar e avaliar a microestrutura presente em tubos de polímero reforçado por fibra de vidro. O trabalho apresenta uma breve introdução do processo de obtenção das fibras de vidro através da pultrusão e suas vantagens e aplicações. As técnicas de caracterização microestrutural são listadas e explicadas bem como a finalidade de se realizar esse procedimento. As amostras foram envelhecidas no forno a uma temperatura próxima da deterioração e depois resfriadas à água e ao ar. Após isso, foi feito ensaio de achatamento nas amostras a fim de se determinar se o envelhecimento afeta o grau de deformação da amostra até ela se romper.

"Bubble surface area flux (Sb) is the surface area of bubbles per unit time per unit cross-sectional area of flotation machine. The units are: (m2 bubble surface/s)/(m2 cell) or s -1. For bubbles of mean size db (m), s b = 6-Qg/A db where Qg is the gas rate (m3/s), and A the cell cross-section (m'). This parameter is now receiving wide attention as the possible key machine variable in flotation diagnosis and modelling. The concept is described and the potential use of sb is illustrated by work on flotation columns and mechanical cells. In column flotation of recycled paper, the dependence of ink recovery on s b was the same regardless of size of column or type of sparger. In mechanical cells, it has been established that the rate constant is related to Sb independent of impeller type.The use of s b is limited by the problem of measurement, primarily that of estimating db. A prototype probe designed to estimate db (and hence sb) based on conductivity measurements is described. Exploratory work with the probe in a mechanical cell suggests the promise of making estimation of s b routine.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is the result of interaction among variables associated with the feed particles, chemistry and the machine (flotation cell). Trying to isolate the effects of each aids in process diagnosis and is at the centre of attempts to model flotation. The machine variables that have been investigated include the air flow number, the power number and specific power (Harris, 1976). None have survived as the basis for predicting flotation response perhaps because they did not include directly the properties of the bubble swarm (or dispersion). Recently, Gorain (1 997) explored the relationship between the flotation rate constant and various ""gas dispersion"" parameters notably: superficial air rate (Jg = Qg/A, where Qg is the volumetric gas rate and A is cross-sectional area of cell), bubble size (db), gas holdup (Eg, i.e., the volumetric fraction of a cell occupied by gas) and bubble surface area flux (sb = 6.Jg/db). Of them all, Gorain et al. (1997) conclude that the latter, the surface area flux, correlated best with the flotation rate constant. This concept was adopted from column flotation where it was used to estimate, among other factors, the maximum amount of gas that could be injected (Finch and Dobby), 1990). Let's start by reviewing the concept. Following that some examples of where the concept has been applied will be described to illustrate the current interest and finally we will consider how to measure the surface area flux."

A series of difficult ground conditions causing high groundwater inflows and hazardous gas intrusion abruptly halted the construction of a 6.4-meter (21-foot) finished diameter and 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) long tunnel planned to serve as a 4-millioncubic meters (1-billion gallon) per day capacity river outfall for treated wastewater. Some 808-meters (2,650-feet) section of the constructed tunnel, TBM, and all other tunneling equipment were completely flooded with hydrogen sulfide laden artesian groundwater. The subsequent pumping and tunnel recovery efforts were unsuccessful and the tunnel was abandoned. In the end, the construction contract was terminated and options to redesign and reconstruct the project were re-evaluated to maximize the use of already constructed tunnel facilities such as the construction access and inter-mediate shafts and six outfall diffuser shafts in the river.

"A brief summary of the different membrane separation options currently available to the mining industry will be presented and discussed. The processes described involve operating membrane plants on the following applications: pregnant leach solutions (PLS) in the copper and gold industries, fractionation and concentration of metals and acids in refineries, and wastewater treatments to meet state-of-the-art surface discharge criteria.Included is a specific discussion on cost savings resulting from an operating membrane treatment system of nearly 3,500 m3/hr barren water relative to the prior, conventional precipitation practice at a major heap leach gold mine. This Engineered Membrane Separation® (EMS®) plant has produced water for six years that has met all standards for direct discharge into the environment, and captures and returns to the operation valuable minerals and solvents which were not previously being extracted in the Merrill-Crowe process.INTRODUCTIONMembrane technology has been available for more than 35 years, but has been used sparingly in the mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral-wound element design and construction, water clarification pretreatment equipment and techniques, and an expanded understanding of membrane fouling and cleaning techniques have dramatically improved the reliability and robustness of membrane-based systems for potential use by the mining industry.In the past 15 years large operating plants have successfully demonstrated the use of this “new” membrane technology to include the separation of pay-metals from large-volume acid and cyanide heap leach mining solutions containing copper, zinc, gold and silver. Moreover, variations on these same membrane technologies are ideally suited to fractionations that add value to processing fluids from refineries, like separating metals from acids or concentrating acids and producing high-quality process fluids."

Attending the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting and exhibit has become an annual tradition for many in the mining industry. Similar to last year’s synopsis, this report is an overview of the 2003 conference from the eyes of a consulting mineralogist. It is supplemented by conversations with other participants. And it examines the conference handouts. Certain segments of the mining industry have seen improvement throughout the year in terms of metal prices, stronger demand and renewed interest by the investment community. Other segments continue their decline due to depressed commodity prices, higher oil prices, a continued weakness in the global economy and war uncertainties. SARS was known to the world, but it was not a Toronto epidemic during PDAC. In short, this year’s PDAC was permeated by an air of anxiety about the Middle East.

Iron ore beneficiation plants are facing economic pressures to treat more challenging ore types, improve efficiency and improve product quality. Better control and stability of the plant process in the face of increasing feed ore variability has been a goal for many of the operations facing these challenges.Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within an iron ore beneficiation plant. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials. Today, PGNAA technology is applied for elemental analysis within the iron ore industry on both bulk materials and slurries.Traditional composite sampling throughout the wet iron ore beneficiation process provides a delayed measurement of average properties but does not capture the true variability of the process in real-time. As such this is a limiting factor towards stabilisation and optimisation of the process. A PGNAA analyser provides real-time slurry elemental analysis of feed, concentrate and tails streams within the processing plant. The analytical data from the analyser can be exploited with a control strategy to correct and stabilise the plant on a much shorter time scale, delivering significant economic benefits and greater operational flexibility. The economic benefits include more stable product quality and a reduction in composite sampling and laboratory costs.Some example results will be presented from the Vale Vargem Grande iron ore beneficiation plants, which are utilising a six stream multiplexed Thermo Scientific PGNAA Slurry Analyser.CITATION:Noble, G, Stabile, A, Portes, E and Roberto, J, 2017. "Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the south-eastern highlands and along the continental margin ofAustralia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the south-eastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the south-eastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the south eastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between ~90 - 100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from ~80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, ~60 - 80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to ~50 - 60 Ma in southern Queensland. The results are consistent with models suggesting that underplating occurred inward of the rift along the eastern margin of Australia as a result of the onset of continental extension in the Tasman Sea at ~96 Ma. This resulted in a significant change in base level and km-scale denudation of much of the southeastern highlands. Subsequently, as breakup commenced during the Late Cretaceous at ~80 Ma and continued into the Paleocene at ~60 Ma, the second stage of cooling was imprinted on the rocks along the margin. This cooling is probably due to the relaxation of elevated geothermal gradients associated with rifting as well as some denudation. Because rifting was oblique to the present-day coast, different regions record different ages of cooling associated with the rift. The southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria yield ages associated with earlier rifting while regions of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland give ages associated with later rifting.

The increase in depth of mines due to the depletion of surface deposits leads to unsafe tunnel construction and overall ore extraction. This is due to tunnel instability associated with the surrounding rock mass’s ability to exhibit creep that occurs over time. However, the explicit description of this mechanism using conventional constitutive models has proven to be difficult and inadequate. Hence, this paper presents an integrated viscoelastic viscoplastic visco-damage model with the Duvaut-Lions function. The presented model is calibrated by experimental data to determine the viscoelastic viscoplastic and visco-damage parameters. It is further implemented in a finite volume numerical code and verified on an experimental scale by numerical modeling of a cylindrical specimen. It describes the 3-phase creep mechanism perfectly as compared to the inbuilt conventional integer-order derivative model. Results from the conducted verification show that it can successfully be employed to describe the long-term behavior associated with the creep mechanism.

Laboratory model test results for the ultimate uplift capacity of square and circular foundations in saturated clay (ø=0) have been presented. The results of the present model tests for square foundations have been compared with the previously published laboratory model tests results on circular foundations. Based on the comparison, it appears that the critical embedment ratio of square and circular foundations increases from about 3 for soft clays to about 7 for medium to stiff clays. By using the experimental results, an empirical procedure has been suggested for determination of the ultimate uplift capacity of belled pier foundations in saturated clay.

Variable nature of rock and face conditions, varying execution and changing nature of blasting are making ongoing optimization challenging. Intelligent planning and on-going analytics are required to mitigate variability and convert blasting into a predictable outcome by use of technology. Blasting operations generate a huge amount of data which can be used intelligently for optimization. In this paper, details are provided of a system which is used for blasting data collection in the field – Key details around blast parameters, explosives, initiating system details, video, photographs, vibration and fragmentation are collected in a cloud-based platform. Data can also be collected through a mobility device in the field (even without internet connectivity) and synchronized with cloud-based system. Also, data from various sources can be imported in excel formats in the software including from upstream and downstream processes from blasting. App also gives indication about exceeding of vibration, air blast overpressure, fragment size etc. Thus, making it possible to perform QA-QC before charging and deciding initiation timing and sequence at the blasting site. The data can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate strategies at the design and execution stage. Data gathering of blast parameters, explosive used processing and analysis can be used to optimize operational efficiency, improve safety and environmental controls.

The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields' Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.

THREE great deposits of iron-ore, in Camaguey and Oriente Provinces, Cuba, are well known to me through careful field-examinations executed in the years 1901 and 1907. In 1901 I visited the Cubitas iron-ore district, which lies about 12 miles distant from the city of Camaguey in a northerly direction, and the Mayari district, which includes the Sierra Nipe, lying opposite Nipe bay on the north side of Oriente Province. In 1907 I again visited the Cubitas district, and also made a sojourn of several days in the Moa district, where the extensive deposits of iron-ore were observed and studied. The observations of 1901 were made under the auspices of the then Military Governor of Cuba; Gen. Leonard Wood, and my conclusions concerning the value of these deposits were incorporated in a report.1 The examination of certain denouncements of iron-ore in the Moa district in 1907 was made in behalf of iron-masters operating in the United States, to whom I reported the existence of large amounts of easily-workable limonitic iron-ore, properly designated " brown iron-ore " in the terminology now current among iron-ore producers in the United States. In 1908 I published a paper entitled Three Deposits of Iron Ore in Cuba, outlining the occurrence and origin of the surficial ores existing in the Cubitas, Mayari, and Moa districts.2 . 1 A Geological Reconnoissance of Cuba, by C.
