Secretary of the Interior, Franklin K. Lane, has appointed a commission of five mining and metallurgical experts from the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey to visit Europe to observe and study reconstruction methods in the devastated regions of France and Belgium. The chairman of the commission is Dr. Frederick G. Cottrell, chief metallurgist of the Bureau of Mines. The other members are: George S. Rice, the chief mining engineer of the same bureau; Frank H. Probert, consulting engineer of the bureau, and. professor of mining in the University of California; F. J. Cameron, consulting chemist of the bureau and expert on potash matters; and Hoyt S. Gale, of the Geological Survey, another expert on potash.

Between 1986 and 1989, at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U. S. Bureau of Mines Western Field Operations Center studied the highly-mineralized, 25,335-acre, Crack Canyon Wilderness Study Area (UT-060-028A), to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The 16-mi-long, 2-mi to 4-mi-wide stud/ area is on the southeast side of the San Rafael Swell, about 40 mi southwest of Green River, Emery County, southeast-central Utah. The study area is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary beds. Uranium, the principle mineral resource, occurs in two formations. The principle uranium deposits are in mudstone, sandstone, and conglomerate lenses in the 22-mi-long outcrop of the Triassic Chinle Formation which parallels and straddles the northwest boundary of the study area, Some small low-grade uranium occurrences and an extensive gypsum deposit are hosted by the Jurassic-age rocks that underlie the southeast part of the study area.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Watershed tungsten deposit is located in the Hodgkinson Province of north Queensland, Australia. The deposit is hosted by Siluro-Devonian flysch-type meta-sediments of the Hodgkinson Formation, which were subjected to four major deformation events. Mineralisation has occurred syn- to post-D4 and is related to the intrusion of S-type granitoids of the Permian Whypalla Supersuite.Watershed is located within a regional NW–SE-striking melange zone composed of brecciated and intermixed arenites and shales. The major NW–SE-striking Tullah fault zone is situated in close proximity to the east of the deposit.The Watershed deposit occurs within a tightly folded upright anticline with NW-plunging fold axis. The anticline contains a major package of coarse-grained to conglomeratic arenite, which harbours the Watershed mineralisation. Several alteration styles occur within the arenites, of which Fe-poor calc-silicate alteration dominated by clinozoisite/epidote is the most significant. Less widespread but locally important alteration styles comprise garnet-dominated calc-silicate alteration, albitisation and sericitisation. The arenites are enveloped by unmineralised carbonaceous shales and shale breccias.Tungsten mineralisation occurs solely as molybdenum-poor scheelite and can be found as three styles: disseminated mineralisation in calc-silicate altered arenites, vein-style mineralisation with quartz-albite-scheelite veins and minor but high-grade mineralisation in albitised felsic dykes.Contact metamorphic rocks and geophysical data indicate the proximity of an underlying granitic body. It is believed that this granitic body was the main driver of the hydrothermal system generating the Watershed deposit. An early mineralisation stage caused the selective calc-silicate alteration of the arenites, while a second stage caused the vein-style high-grade mineralisation. The folded shales enveloping the arenites worked as an effective barrier that kept the mineralising fluids in a confined rock volume.The scheelite mineralisation at Watershed is open to depth, with a granite-hosted porphyry or greisen-style mineralisation anticipated below the current resource.CITATION:Griessmann, M and Williamson, J, 2015. Tests demonstrated that aqueous solutions of sodiu~n sulfide would dissolve over 95 pct of the cinnabal- in 5 pct Hg flrotation concentrates and 60 to 90 pct of the cinnabav in low-grade ol-es. Double-leach tests showed that potassiutn sulfide would dissolve 90 pct of the avsenic sulfide in Hg-As satnples and only 1 to 10 pct of the Hg; the sodium sulfide would then dissolve 80 to 90 pct of the rernaining Hg and 30 to 70 pct of the vemaining As. 1 HIS paper describes the extraction, by alkaline sulfide solutions, of mercury from cinnabar-bear ing ores and flotation concentrates. Leaching time and solution temperature had minor effects on mercury extraction when compared to the effects of reagent quantity and ore type and grade. Cinnabar, although readily soluble in sodium sulfide, was only partially soluble in potassium sulfide and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. A double leach process was developed to extract selectively the arsenic from Hg-As products with K2S and to treat the residue with sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions to extract the mercury.' Mercury was then recovered from the pregnant solutions either by precipitation with metallic aluminum or by electrodeposition. The solubility of HgS in alkaline sulfide solutions was first reported by Volhard in 1878.' The first reported commercial application was made in 1915 when Thornhill applied the method to the treatment of an amalgamation tailing.3 Mullhollen, in 1911. described the chemical reaction of HgS with Na,S and alkaline hydrate to be:4 Most investigators have reported using a 4-pct sodium sulfide and a 1-pct sodium hydroxide soluti~n.3-4 An increase in temperature or excessive dilution of the solution causes the reaction to be reversed. Church Holmes described a similar process used for the extraction of antimony from silver concentrates at the Sunshine Mining Company's mill at Kellogg. Idaho.5 More recently. Erspamer and Wells reported the results of leaching studies on a Hg-Sb ore from Alaska.6 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Leaching tests were made on samples of mercury ore from eight deposits in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In addition. tests were made on flotation concentrates from seven of the samples as well as a flotation concentrate from an operating mill. Since previous investigators reported reagent requirements greatly in excess of that required by the equation HgS + Na2S = HgS . Na2S, initial studies were made on chemically pure HgS. Results showed that the reaction actually required about 1 g of Na,S per g of HgS in an aqueous solution rather than 0.338 g of Na,S as indicated by the equation. To check further the matter of reagent requirements, Na2S and HgS were mixed together in equal mole ratios. Water was then added, a drop at a time, until the components reacted; X-ray diffraction analyses showed no HgS nor Na,S present. The yellow hydrate compound which formed would not redissolve until about three additional mole equivalents of Na,S were added to the solution. This indicated that a stable solution would require at least 4 moles of Na2S for each mole of HgS. While these implications may be valid for pure HgS, the possibility of entirely different results caused by the existence of other elements present in ores and concentrates was recognized. "Deformation Banding ( DB ) in cold rolled mild steel has been experimentally established by microstructure investigation. Deformation banding model includes such deformation mode when it is applied to rolling texture simulation. The cause for the occurrence of deformation banding is the reduction of the total work for plastic deformation through a relaxation of the deformation constraints. In the first DB model, all grains are assumed to band from the first deformation step. Such an unrealistic assumption has been eliminated in the new model by the introduction of a banding criterion based on an energy minimizing approach. The prediction is closer to the measured texture by applying banding criterion and setting critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS) ratio for { 110 } and { 112 } slip modes to 0.85.IntroductionBased on the continuum theory of plastic flow and deformation mechanism of crystallographic dislocation slip, Taylor's FC ( Full Constrain ) theory [1] has been widely used in texture modeling. As the process of cold rolling of sheet materials produces a microstructure consisting of elongated or equiaxed flat grain or cell, the ""lath"" and ""pancake"" relaxed constraints ( RC ) models [2, 3] were introduced as the successful improvements over the classical FC model. It has been also recognized that crystals may split into different orientations during deformation and the term deformation banding is used to describe such deformation processes [4, 5]. Lee et al. [6, 7] pointed out that the success of the RC theory in predicting textures depends on the physical processes of deformation banding. They developed so called Deformation Banding ( DB ) model by considering DB in the longitudinal plane to be accounted for by the RC method and allowing DB in the rolling plane. DB model was applied to simulate the texture development in bee case [8], the predicted bee rolling textures are in reasonable agreement with the measured textures. In the first DB model, however, all grains are assumed to band right upon the first deformation step. A banding criterion was formulated [7] which states that DB will occur if the work used in DB model is less than that in RC model. Such criterion has been incorporated into the original DB model for texture simulation and is referred to as DBC ( Deformation Banding Criterion ) model."

Coal blending inherently means homogenizing a mixture of coals so that, overall, the properties of the blend meet some specifications for maintaining power plant performance and emission requirements. In common practice, however, coal blending is at best coal mixing. If necessary, more sophisticated blending systems can produce a more homogeneous feed by using accurate weighing devices and on-line coal analyzers coupled with sampling systems. Blending can be accomplished at the mine, on stockpiles, and from bins, bunkers, and silos.

Neste trabalho, blendas de ABS (acrilonitrila-butadieno-estireno) e HIPS (poliestireno de alto impacto) provenientes de carcaças de equipamentos eletro eletrônicos (EEE) foram estudadas. O material foi moído em duas granulometrias diferentes (uma fina e outra grossa). Os corpos de prova para ensaios de tração e impacto de blendas ABS/HIPS na proporção 50/50 (% em massa) foram obtidas diretamente por injeção variando-se a velocidade de dosagem (50, 150 e 300 mm/s) e a granulometria do material moído (fina e grossa). Os corpos de prova obtidos foram caracterizados quanto às suas propriedades mecânicas (resistência à tração e resistência ao impacto). As diferenças obtidas nas propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas através da análise de variância (Anova-fator duplo com repetição). Observou-se que a velocidade de dosagem e a granulometria do material não afetaram significativamente os valores de módulo de elasticidade aparente e deformação na ruptura das blendas obtidas. Já a granulometria mais fina resultou em blendas com uma maior resistência à tração e maior resistência ao impacto, não importando o valor da velocidade de dosagem utilizada durante o processo de injeção.

This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. The oxidation behavior of copper smelting slag under non-isothermal conditions was studied by thermal analysis. The results indicate that the copper slag is mainly composed of fayalite ( Fe2SiO4) and magnetite ( Fe3O4). The oxidation behavior can be divided into two reaction stages with the increase in temperature; the first stage is the oxidation of fayalite to magnetite, and the second stage is the oxidation of magnetite to hematite. The two reaction stages cannot be strictly separated; that is, the reaction of fayalite is not complete, and magnetite has begun to transform into hematite. Based on the TG (thermogravimetric) curves, the ABS (Achar–Brindley–Sharp–Wendworth) differential and the Coats–Redfern integral methods were employed to investigate the oxidation kinetics of copper slag during the continuous heating process. The oxidation of fayalite into magnetite and amorphous silica phases occurs mainly in the temperature range of 673 to 1083 K. The activation energies calculated by the two methods are 193.69 and 195.52 kJ mol− 1, respectively. The reaction is consistent with Avrami–Erofeev equation, and the mechanism of oxidation is random nucleation and growth. The oxidation of magnetite to hematite occurs at 1083–1303 K. The activation energies are 308.79 and 328.77 kJ mol− 1, respectively. The mechanism conforms to the Jander equation and is controlled by the two-dimensional diffusion.

O presente trabalho apresenta rota não-aquosa para a obtenção de compostos sólidos e sistemas de filmes finos do tipo ABO3 (PbTiO3 e PbZrO3). Os compostos foram caracterizados por meio da técnica de difração de raios X (DRX) e teste de ângulo de contato e os filmes por espectrofotometria, elipsometria espectral e microscopia de força atômica (AFM), tendo sido depositados sobre substratos de baixo ponto de fusão por técnicas de spin-coating. Os resultados indicam a formação de nanoestruturas cristalinas e sugerem a sua utilização como atuadores ou piezoatuadores.

This report examines the effectiveness of bonus plans in the coal industry. The analysis uses theoretical, literature review and empirical approaches to determine the impact of bonus plans on safety and productivity in underground coal mines. The basic finding is that the modal bonus plan in underground coal mining does not have a major impact on productivity and safety indicators. The design of the plan, or organizational factors, and the process of introducing the plan all contribute to its relative ineffectiveness. Strategies and options for designing effective plans are presented.

The objective of this work is to provide a detailed review and a list of references in chronological order, comprising 80 recent technical papers, on the use of discrete-event simulation (DES) modeling in mining engineering. In this article, the review papers of published mine simulation projects through 2007 are summarized, and then a comprehensive review of individual articles published from 2008 to 2015 is presented. This survey work also includes analyses of the simulation tools used in the published projects, mining types and applications in order to assess these key features and evaluate the recent state of research in mine DES simulation. In addition, an interactive map visualization for the locations of the simulated projects is made available on a website to benefit current and prospective scholars in the field. The results of this investigation revealed that the most common application of DES in mining had been mining equipment selection and analysis, while ore processing and risk management projects were less frequently reported. The results also showed that modeling surface mines were in the majority, but the trend of publications for underground mine simulations had also increased. According to the results, ARENA was the most popular simulation software package, but several simulation tools that were only used once or twice in the mining projects are also included in this review.

Rare-earth pyrochlores, commonly exhibiting anomalously low lattice thermal conductivities, are considered as promising topcoat materials for thermal barrier coatings. However the structural origin underlying their low thermal conductivities remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the phonon properties of a group of RE pyrochlores, Ln2Zr2O7 (Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd) employing density functional theory and quasi harmonic approximation. Through the relaxation time approximation (RTA) with Debye model, the thermal conductivities of those RE pyrochlores were predicted, showing good agreement with experimental measurements. The low thermal conductivities of RE pyrochlores were shown to largely come from the interference between the low-lying optical branches and acoustic branches. The structural origin underlying the low-lying optical branches was then clarified.

This paper deals with the numerical simulation of rock cutting laboratory tests using the discrete element method. The main objective is to provide a method for calibrating numerical DEM models of rock cutting in a systematic way so that realistic results are yielded. The numerical models are developed with the discrete element code Yade, which models rocks as a collection of bonded spheres. The models are calibrated in a four-step process based on the design of experiments method and optimization. The calibrated models are evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively against actual laboratory cutting tests, in terms of the ratio of the simulated mean cutting force to the actual one and the cutting force time series, respectively. The fully calibrated models showed that the simulated cutting process matched qualitatively the actual cutting force recordings and underestimated the mean cutting force by approximately 3%. It is concluded that well-calibrated numerical simulations of the rock cutting process can provide not only a better understanding of the process itself but also quantitative data regarding the cutting force and energy requirements.

While this list is not identical, with officially designated problems, due to overlapping of subjects and to new developments within specified problems, presentation upon the basis of this subdivision will best serve to review the work of the section.

O presente trabalho buscou explorar a influência de um tratamento térmico de ressolubilização (70 minutos / 510ºC), antes da laminação convencional de uma liga de alumínio 7475-T7351. Para tal, duas amostras (com e sem o tratamento térmico) foram laminadas de 12,5 mm até 3 mm de espessura, após 13 passes com uma redução aproximada de 10% por passe. Com base nos resultados obtidos via microscopia óptica (Olympus, modelo GX51) e dureza Vickers (durômetro EMCOTEST, modelo Duravision 300), conclui-se que o tratamento térmico de ressolubilização adotado antes da laminação convencional da liga em estudo, propiciou modificações microestruturais e incremento na dureza quando comparada a amostra laminada sem prévio tratamento térmico de ressolubilização.

Local community acceptance is a key aspect of planning and managing mining projects, whether through sustainability assessment and reporting or corporate social responsibility programs. However, there has been very little research to understand the determinants of community acceptance. This paper seeks to identify key mine characteristics and demographic factors that influence individual acceptance of mining projects. Six demographic factors and 16 mine characteristics were selected based on literature review. Four of the six demographics factors were confirmed to be significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with people?s attitude of the importance of the mine characteristics. All sixteen mine characteristics are identified as important factors. The most important mining factors are Job opportunities, water shortage or pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Both the mining and control groups have same opinion of 12 mining characteristics and differ on four (infrastructure improvement, labor shortage for other businesses, noise pollution, and mine life). During design and management of mines, this data can be used as a reference. This result will facilitate better choice experiment (survey) design for discrete choice modeling. Such discrete choice models can provide a viable framework for data-driven community engagement and sustainable mine management.
