O desafio no processo de coqueificação está relacionado à elaboração de misturas de carvões que produzam coque com a qualidade para utilização nos altos-fornos. Foi avaliada, em escala piloto, a influência de materiais inertes (coque verde de petróleo [CVP], antracito e carvão com alto teor de inerte [CATI]) às misturas de coqueificação sobre a formação de microtexturas e a qualidade do coque. Os resultados indicaram que, para a mistura avaliada, a adição do CVP até 30% produziu coque com qualidade (DI15-150) adequada para os altos-fornos da Usiminas. As principais microtexturas foram do tipo mosaico, fragmentária, fusita, inerte anisotrópico e o próprio CVP. O antracito provocou redução significativa de DI15-150 e CSR. A análise de microscopia óptica revelou partículas livres na matriz de coque, contribuindo para a queda de qualidade. A adição de CATI às misturas de coqueificação resultou em forte queda na qualidade do coque e a microtextura do tipo mosaico foi predominante. De forma geral, o carvão com alto teor de inertes foi o que apresentou menos benefícios, diferentemente do CVP, que apresentou melhor resultado para ser utilizado nas misturas de coqueificação da Usiminas.

"Pyrrhotite (Po) is one of the most abundant sulfide minerals in processing industry and must be rejected in most cases. Particularly, Po rejection and its selectivity against pentlandite (Pn) have long been a challenge due to similarities in the mineral composition of the two minerals and the collectorless flotation characteristics of Po. Xanthates have been widely used to promote sulfide mineral flotation; however, in the presence of xanthates, the redox potential established at the mineral/solution interface is most important, determining the flotation performance. In this paper, the importance of electrochemistry in Po and Pn flotation has been demonstrated and a comprehensive study was conducted on two different feed streams (i.e., magnetic concentrate and scavenger cleaner streams, containing magnetic and nonmagnetic forms of Po, respectively), from Vale’s Clarabelle Mill in Sudbury, Ontario, with an objective to determine if improvements in Po rejection and Pn recovery could be achieved by controlling pulp electrochemistry. By conducting a series of flotation tests under different Eh conditions and reagent usage schemes, it was revealed that higher Po content in the magnetic stream may protect Pn from being oxidized, improving Pn recovery. The results indicated that at low oxidizing pulp chemistry, the rest potential for the Pn is still high enough to allow the formation of dixanthogen to promote its flotation. Using a Pt electrode, it was found that by controlling pulp potential at -50<Eh< +50 mV, the Pn recovery and Po depression would be satisfactory. The results, using mineral electrodes (Outotec Chena analyzer), indicated that selective separation can be achieved if low-to-moderate oxidation potentials (0 to 100 mV) or reduction (0 to -100 mV) potentials are monitored using Pn and Po electrodes. Mixing two streams at 50:50 wt % would be possibly beneficial in selective separation.IntroductionPyrrhotite (Po), Fe1-xS, is one of the most abundant sulfide minerals in the processing industry. It is an iron-deficient sulfide that occurs either in monoclinic or hexagonal form. The monoclinic one is richer in sulfur and is ferromagnetic, whereas the hexagonal Po is poorer in sulfur and has no magnetic properties. In general, the ferromagnetic properties of natural Po increase with increasing sulfur content. Although Po holds significant iron content, it is not used as a feedstock for the iron and steel industry due to the difficulty in achieving complete removal of sulfur. The common availability of iron oxide ores makes the iron sulfides irrelevant for the steel industry."

The addition of a thallous salt to the cyanide leach of a calcined pyritic concentrate causes a marked increase in the rate of extraction of gold. This is due probably to the activation of passive gold by the thallous ions. Lead, bismuth, and mercury salts, which should produce a similar effect, fail to do so. It is postulated that this latter result, together with the reprecipitation of silver at low cyanide levels, is due to the presence of soluble sulphide.INTRODUCTIONThe work of Fink and Putnam (1950) showed that the rate of solution of gold in cyanide can be increased by the addition of small amounts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium salts. Mills (1951), during a study of the electrochemistry of gold, with particular reference to cyanidation, was able to show that gold may become passive towards cyanide solution. The addition of lead or thallium salts prevented this passivity, although the action of lead was limited to the pH range 10 to 12. In a recent paper Cathro (1963) confirmed the findings of Mills, and presented results which showed that the addition of thallium to a cyanide leach of a calcine from Lake View and Star mine, Kalgoorlie, increased the rate of extraction of gold appreciably. The deposit, which forms a ridge -adjacent to the York river, in Mont-eagle township, is held by Monteagle Minerals Limited, of Toronto. The ore is in a Precambrian gneiss which is composed of nepheline, scapolite, andesine and microcline feldspars, muscovite and biotite micas, and -corundum. The major orebody is tabular and is exposed for 1,200 feet along the crest of the ridge. It aver-ages about 90 feet in thickness, dips at about 70°, and was intersected by drilling at a vertical depth of 600 feet. The deposit was prospected for corundum in the early 1900's. Recent exploration was undertaken to deter-mine its potential as a source of high-alumina ceramic material, with by-product corundum and white mica. The program included prospecting, mapping, trenching, diamond drilling, bulk sampling, beneficiation research, a large-scale beneficiation test, product evaluation, market investigations, and plant design. Reserves, to a depth of about 300 feet, are estimated at about 3 million tons.

THE first fall meeting of the new Coal Division started on time on Thursday morning, Sept. 11, at Pittsburgh, with Paul Sterling of the Anthracite Section presiding and over a hundred members and guests in the room. The attendance increased from session to session, the total registration being 248. Excellent arrangements had been made by the officers of the Division covering all features of the meeting, the only drawback being that more papers-were listed for presentation than could be discussed in the time available. Howard-N. Evensong, chairman of the Division, explained this situation as sore and sore papers case in by likening it to the case of the small boy who wanted a second niece of pie at the end of a large seal. When his mother remonstrated that if he ate any more he would certainly burst, the young man replied, "Well, you just hand over the pie and then get out of the way." With that Mr. Evensong turned the meeting over to Mr. Sterling, who handled it so well that with ample discussion it was still possible to adjourn at lunch time, all but the group of junior papers having been heard. This series of papers, the output of the .very lively Junior Section organized last spring by the younger men of the Division was regretfully put over until Friday morning, when that on "Heat Drying" by S.. M. Parsley was read.

A 70% excess of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, has been reported among men in northeastern Minnesota, where iron mining has been the major industry. The Minnesota Department of Health has studied iron miners who developed mesothelioma to identify possible sources of asbestos exposure. A database of all Minnesota residents diagnosed with mesothelioma between 1988 and 1996 was linked to a database of approximately 72,000 current and former Minnesota iron-mining employees to identify cases who had ever worked in the mining industry. The job histories of the cases were examined to determine if any of their jobs could have involved exposure to commercial asbestos. Seventeen individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma in Minnesota between 1988 and 1996 were found to have worked in the iron mining industry. Of the 15 for whom adequate work histories were available, 14 had identifiable sources of exposure to commercial asbestos in jobs held both inside and outside of the mining industry. The time between employment in these asbestosexposed occupations and the diagnosis of mesothelioma is consistent with the 20 or more year latency period that has been observed in other studies of this cancer. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. AngloGold Ashanti Ltd nominated Sunrise Dam Gold Mine as a case study via their involvement with the long-running Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) International P9P research program (AMIRA, 2015) . A group of researchers from the Global Comminution Collaborative (GCC) conducted a comminution circuit survey and review together with a large group of graduate metallurgists, senior metallurgists and operators. Fundamental and applied research understanding was used to identify productivity and efficiency improvements around the crushing and grinding circuits. The limitations of current scientific knowledge were identified through this process and this will allow future research to be more focussed on what is required by industry.The comminution circuit at Sunrise Dam comprises three stages of crushing followed by two stages of ball milling. The secondary crusher and primary ball mill classification were identified as the primary limitations of the circuit. The secondary crusher was found to be underperforming through overall equipment efficiency (OEE) analysis and an improved chamber design was identified by Chalmers University. This improved design will promote higher power utilisation, choke feeding and a finer crushed product for the milling circuit. The primary ball mill product is classified by a combination of a trommel, 3 sieve bends and a hydrocyclone. The combination of poor classification and coarse, competent feed led to a situation where the primary mill was overfilled with rocks, reducing grinding rate due to cushioning of impact. Com a crescente utilização de aços inoxidáveis duplex na indústria petroquímica, química, de celulose e entre outras, motivada em grande parte pelas propriedades mecânicas e de resistência à corrosão apresentadas por estes materiais. Por se tratar de um material com altos teores de elementos de liga e ser composto por duas fases, ferrita e austenita, se faz necessário grandes cuidados na sua soldagem e um aprimoramento dos conhecimentos deste material quando submetido a este processo. Para tal, o presente trabalho denota um estudo da microestrutura de um aço inoxidável duplex após a sua soldagem pelo processo MIG pulsado, sendo aplicada uma energia durante a soldagem de 1,0kJ e adotada uma temperatura entre os passes de soldagem de 150oC. Também foram analisados os percentuais de ferrita e austenita, foi efetuada a contagem de fases do metal base e também da zona afetada pelo calor (ZAC). Foram encontrados na ZAC além da fase austenita secundária, uma fase intermetálica que possivelmente se trata de nitretos de cromo. Apesar do metal base estar com uma proporção ferrita/austenita aproximadamente igual, na ZAC houve um desbalanceamento entre as fases, onde a predominância foi de grãos de ferrita.

Asbestos fibers are highly fibrous silicate fibers that are distinguished by having a large aspect (length to diameter) ratio and are crystallized in an asbestiform habit that causes them to separate into very thin fibers or fibrils. These fibers are distinct from nonasbestiform cleavage fragments and may appear as thick, short fibers which break along cleavage planes without the high strength and flexibility of asbestiform fibers. Since cleavage fragments of respirable dimensions have generally proven nonpathogenic in animal studies, little data exists on assessing well-characterized preparations of cleavage fragments in in vitro models. I HAVE to thank the members of the Institute most cordially for the honour conferred upon me in selecting me President, which position my poor services have prevented my filling adequately. I have, therefore only been able to stumble through my year of office under the guiding direction of our esteemed Secretary. I fully appreciate the honour done to me; and, now that it is over, I can look back with pride and pleasure at having occupied the chair; but I am told that it remains for me to fill one of the requirements of our Institute and present you with what has been dignified by the name of a presidential address. My relief in complying with this is in the knowledge of its freedom from the usual discussion which appertains to papers presented by our worthy members. It has been usual in the past for the subject chosen to be specially connected with the work immediately engaging the attention of your president, and on this occasion I would like to break away from this time-honoured custom and engage your attention for a brief space on what is equally dear to us all namely, Ideals of the Profession. Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec&#174; Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. A Manutenção Compartilhada, ou autônoma, é um programa que capacita os colaboradores a realizar manutenção, pequenas inspeções, além das operações das plantas de beneficiamento, através da criação da carreira de Operador Mantenedor em sua estrutura. Alinhado com o mapa estratégico da unidade, o projeto teve por objetivo consolidar um novo conceito de estrutura de carreira das equipes de Operação e Manutenção nas plantas de beneficiamento. Buscando maior simplicidade, aumento da produtividade e capturando as oportunidades de sinergia entre as equipes de Operação e Manutenção, o projeto reduziu significativamente o custo de pessoal e resultou em maior autonomia e oportunidades de crescimento para as equipes envolvidas.

The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of &quot;Cyanidation,&quot; by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. It has been more especially in these large low grade ore bodies, that modern methods have been benefical; for small lodes must be rich to pay at all, as they cannot be worked on the same gigantic scale, but even in these a percentage of metal is saved which formerly was absolutely lost.To make these large deposits remunerative it is, however necessary to try and find the point of greatest economic advantage, to handle the ore in vast quantities, to erect huge plats to treat it, to substitute automatic appliances for hand labour as far as possible, and to combine several processes supplementary to one another, so that ore which is not amenable to one process, shall be saved, by another; and by doing...

Ion Exchange (IX) using Strong Base Anion Exchange (SBA) resins is conventionally used to purify uranium from sulfuric acid pregnant leach solutions (PLS), particularly when uranium grades are relatively low. However, the presence of chloride in the PLS interferes negatively with conventional SBA based IX processes, by reducing the uranium loading on the resin. Chloride can be present in the PLS due to the use of saline bore or seawater in leaching, or chloride containing leach/IX reagents. ANSTO has been examining strategies to combat this problem for several years. ANSTO previously reported that a recently developed high-capacity SBA resin was capable of extracting uranium efficiently from saline leach liquors produced at Boss Resources’ Honeymoon in-situ recovery mine in South Australia. The resin was tested successfully in a 2017 Field Leach Trial carried out onsite in the existing wellfield area. While the piloting was extremely promising, the elution was more challenging, with eluate tenors limited to 2 g/L U3O8 using NaCl. This is due to the resin’s strong affinity for the uranium complex, which makes it difficult to elute efficiently by standard methods. In this paper, we describe a novel elution process developed for strong base resins that significantly improves upon conventional methods. The process, developed by ANSTO, is based upon conversion of the extracted uranyl sulfate species to uranyl carbonate, followed by elution with sodium chloride. The loading and elution process was demonstrated in continuous locked-cycle piloting conducted at ANSTO in 2019. The results were excellent, with eluate tenors of 8–9 g/L U3O8 achieved from Honeymoon PLS containing 50 mg/L U3O8, with very little transfer of impurities. In subsequent test work, the eluate was shown to be amenable to uranium peroxide precipitation. The results represent a huge step forward for the purification of uranium from saline leach liquors.

The portal, which is the near-horizontal, surface point of entry to an underground excavation, can often be an exceedingly difficult area in terms of ground control. Surface and subsurface failures at portals, as discerned during a study involving over 300 case histories, are unfortunately, common. To aid in the engineering evaluation of portals, the Geomechanics Classification System was appended with discontinuity orientation assessment values and support/excavation guidelines. Also, a design model utilizing RMR predicted rock loads in conjunction with half-dome theory is proposed for the most common type of portal failure. Other pertinent comments and recommendations relating to portal stability are included.

One of the largest scale uses of a multiple, high-strength steel bar tiedown system is described. Tiedowns were installed to resist hydrostatic uplift forces acting on a section of the Interstate Highway Route I-90 southern approach roadway to the Third Harbor Tunnel, in Boston, Massachusetts. Site specific information is discussed regarding design, testing, and installation of Tiedowns. Conclusions are presented regarding the overall performance of this system and the application of this type of tiedown system on future projects.

The title of “the world’s biggest volume-produced hydraulic breaker,” that was held for more than a decade by the Atlas HB 7,000, changed hands with the launch of Atlas Copco’s HB 10,000 at bauma 2007. A service weight of 10 t (11 st) and up to 50 percent higher productivity represent major steps toward a new market segment: the use of hydraulic breakers as cost-efficient production machines for primary breaking and as a true alternative to drilling and blasting. The HB 10,000 has all the technical features developed by Atlas Copco for its hydraulic breakers and includes: StartSelect — the breaker’s start-up and shut-down behavior can be adapted to the conditions. AutoControl that ensures an optimized balance of impact energy and impact frequency to maximize percussive performance. Auto-Control also reduces blank firing force and controls energy recovery. PowerAdapt — if oil pressure is too high, the breaker shuts down automatically. This prevents downtime and is particularly useful when breakers are used on different carriers. DustProtector II — a combination of multiple strippers prevents abrasive rock dust and foreign bodies from penetrating the lower breaker section. Conti- Lube II — the automatic lubrication unit guarantees optimal lubrication of the breaker at all times.

Anomalous geologic or stress-induced conditions can create a hazardous working environment for underground miners. Seismic attenuation tomography provides a valuable tool for understanding static and dynamic conditions induced by mining. As a longwall shearer cuts coal, it generates seismic energy. As this energy travels through the rock mass it is attenuated in a manner proportional to the degree of fracturing of the rock mass. By calculating this attenuation at specific locations underground, the degree of fracturing of the rock mass, and hence the relative stress state or material properties can be inferred. The goal of this work has been to create a tool which can be easily used by the mining industry to obtain information about the distribution of stress concentrations or material properties across a broad area in advance of mining.
