In the paper the method for estimation of settlement of vertically loaded piles in a group is presented. The method is generally based on the hybrid procedure with non-linear solution for single piles and with interaction between them for the low-strain shear modulus. Some attention is paid to the influence of deformation and strength parameters used in calculations. The applied model is verified in the framework of the research programme carried out recently in the Geotechnical Department of Gdansk Technical University. It concerns monitoring and analysing the settlements of the existing structures on piles. A comparison of calculation and measurements results for two tested buildings is presented as an example.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

This report describes a study, conducted jointly by BethEnergy Mines Inc. and the Bureau of Mines, to assess the effects of longwall front abutment loading on various supplemental support materials utilized in a predriven recovery room. The purpose of the predriven recovery room is to reduce longwall equipment transfer time by eliminating the premove preparation associated with conventional recovery methods. In addition, the room provides a large area in which face salvage equipment can maneuver. Results of four recovery-room study areas show the progression and influence of the front abutment on the longwall panel and supports and their subsequent behavior. The best performance (i. e. the support that most facilitated recovery) of support material was achieved through the use of a concrete mixture which had a sand content of 35 percent by volume. The longwall transfer time was reduced by 30 percent which translates to a production advantage of 37,000 raw tons of coal per panel.

For a theoretical description of power plants that derive their energy from the combustion of a fuel, it is necessary to solve, to an appropriate degree of precision, a hydrodynamic problem that requires for its solution a knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of the working fluid com-posed of the products of the combustion reaction. It is usually a good approximation to assume that the properties of the combustion gas are determined by the conditions of thermal equilibrium, and it is thus possible to employ the methods of Classical thermodynamics for their computation. The thermodynamic properties of fuel gases also are of considerable importance, as they form the basis for the design of appropriate means for their effective utilization. The specification of the operating conditions to produce a gas for use as an intermediate in a chemical process, such as the synthesis of liquid fuels, may be based upon a study of the variation of the composition of the synthesis gas with changes in the various process variables. Although there exists a large number of important scientific and technical applications of the data that can be obtained from the systematic determination of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases, such application has been greatly handicapped by the extremely tedious and time-consuming computational methods required. The development of large-scale automatic computational equipment makes feasible the initiation of a systematic program for the determination of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases and for the application of such data to specific problems of scientific and technical importance. As a part of its program of basic research in flame and combustion phenomena, the Explosives and Physical Sciences Division of the Bureau of Mines is engaged in such a program. The present communication is designed to introduce a series of reports presenting the results of this program.

"The main purpose in the compilation of accident statistics is to reveal conditions that may result in injury to persons or property so that remedial measures may be applied. For practical reasons it is usually found necessary to restrict inquiry to conditions which actually have caused personal injury, and to omit those which nay, but have not yet, resulted in damage, Fortunately or unfortunately, there is a sufficient number of the former to indicate the existence of hazards so numerous as to require all of the attention which the industry can devote to the subject.Two years ago, the Bureau of 'mines, in cooperation with the National Safety Council, undertook an intensive campaign to obtain more complete and satisfactory information regarding mine accidents than had theretofore been available. Since 1911 the bureau had been receiving annual summaries from all companies operating metal mines, showing, in a general way, the number and causes of accidents that occurred during the preceding year and the number of men employed at the mines. Monthly summaries of fatal accidents at coal mines were received from the state inspectors, showing the number of deaths attributed to each of 22 main causes of accidents, Information for individual coal mines was not furnished.While this information, nation-wide in scope, is indispensable because it epitomizes the progress or retrogression in the industry as a whole, and serves as a background of specialized studies, yet certain classes of acci¬dents, for example, those that are more or less peculiar to specific districts or mines, require an analysis in greater detail than is possible on the sole basis afforded by the annual summaries.The need for more specific information was realized some years ago in the State of Pennsylvania in connection with the administration of the workmen's compensation law, The mining industry is well acquainted with the val¬uable studies of accidents, particularly nonfatal accidents, in the mines of that State being conducted by Mr. Rush N. "The primary objective of the Barrick Goldstrike expert system is to achieve the desired liberation size for the autoclave circuit while maximizing throughput. In addition, when downstream limitations (autoclave circuit or others) restrict the milling circuit tonnage the expert system further improves grinding product size. Since its implementation, the expert system has provided expected throughput improvements while improving or maintaining circuit performance.Barrick Goldstrike and MinnovEX Technologies Inc. teamed up to install an expert system to control Line I and I1 of the autoclave grinding circuits. The dissimilar equipments of the two grinding circuits coupled to different production objectives, skepticism among operators, and the variability of the ore types processed in each line challenged the implementation.To ensure implementation success, Barrick Goldstrike dedicated four administrators full time to the project. The system administrators included two metallurgists, a process control engineer and a mill trainer. As usual, the control room operators were the experts who provided the operational logic for the foundation of the control system. The administrators and all eleven of the control room operators signed off on acceptance of the system. Current online utilization is 95%.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding circuit for Barrick Goldstrike’s autoclave process consists of two SAG Mill Ball Mill lines. Line 1 grinding circuit is comprised of a 22 by 8 foot, 2500 horsepower Allis Chalmers (AC) variable speed SAG mill, followed by a 12.5 by 14 foot, 1250 horsepower AC ball mill, and a 13.5 by 18 foot, 1800 horsepower Dominion ball mill in parallel. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1352 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (4.5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The ball mill circuit is closed with 6 Krebs super D20 cyclones. Line 2 grinding circuit is comprised of a 24 by 12 foot 4000 horsepower Fuller variable speed SAG mill followed by a 16.5 by 30.5 foot 5000 horsepower Fuller ball mill. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1560 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The line 2 ball mill circuit is closed with 12 Krebs super D20 cyclones. The underground Meikle ore is typically fed through Line 1. Achieving the desired product size is critical for successful processing of Meikle ore. Open pit Betze ore is fed to Line 1 when Meikle ore is unavailable. Line 2 processes Betze ore exclusively. Throughput is maximized when processing Betze ore as the product size is less critical. The products of these two circuits are combined as feed to the autoclave circuit. The ore types and the autoclave circuit demands determine the required grinding circuit product size and maximum combined mill feed tonnage."

This paper presents a case history involving the installation of drilled in piles with rock sockets for the Bicycle and Pedestrian Path project located west of the Henry Hudson Parkway within the Riverside Park between 83rd Street and 91st Street at the Hudson River in New York, NY. The paper specifically addresses access and construction procedures for a marine installation when working in an urban and environmentally sensitive setting.

I had hoped when the time came for me to address this meeting that gold mining would be in a much happier position than we find it to-day.As it is, and because of the demands of national security, we find this great and valuable primary industry relegated to the background and in danger of temporary extinction.These notes refer mainly to gold mining in Western Australia, whence comes the major portion of Australia's production, and their purpose is to record a brief review of the industry immediately prior to the general disorganization that is following the call-up of men from the mines.During this period of reduced production the loss of comparable statistical data will make it impossible to follow the progress of the industry, and, since the period may be long, it occurred to me that information might be derived from an examination of the trend of recent production that would indicate what may be expected of the industry when full production is resumed in the future.Since the revival of gold mining, which started in 1931, most of the old-established mines have reorganized and, in some cases, completely renewed and enlarged their equipment in order to achieve maximum production, and old mines hitherto unpayable have been re-opened and equipped. At the same time large sums have been spent in scientific prospecting and in search for new mines, and it is safe to say that at the end of 1939, when gold production reached its peak, practically every known mine in Western Australia that could be worked profitably was in production.During this period the number of men employed in the industry rose from 5,961 in 1931 to approximately 15,000 in 1939. From the outbreak of war in 1939 to the end of 1941 the output from the mines was maintained at full pressure, maximum tonnage beingrecorded in 1940, although a reduction in the grade of ore treated caused a slight falling off in gold production.During 1941 there was a. fall in both tonnage and grade. The decline in tonnage was due partly to the closing of the Lancefield and Mount Magnet mines, and partly to the shortage of labour brought about by the response of the goldfields to the call for men for the fighting services, the average number of men in the industry in this year being reduced to 12,929.With the entry of the United States into the war in December last and the pooling of the resources of the allied nations, the need for gold as a purchasing medium passed, and with its passing there arose the demand for the transfer of the man-power engaged in gold mining to other fields of industry directly connected with the war effort.There was a ready response by those connected with the industry who...

The essential features of the zinc concentrate roasting installation at the Risdon Works by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. are given.The problem of maintenance of ignition in down-draught zinc concentrate flash roasters is discussed, and a solution offered.A successful and economical method of using by-product oxygen for raising the roasting efficiency of hearth roasters is described. Three methods of utilizing oxygen for the same purpose in flash roasting are detailed, and their relative merit, considered.INTRODUCTIONThe zinc sulphide concentrate used at the Risdon Works is roasted autogenously for removal of sulphur in two hearth roasters, and four flash roasters. The hearth roasters are of modified Skinner type with eleven hearths. They were designed, and are used, for roasting mixtures of relatively low sulphide content. Their design and operation have been described elsewhere (Forster, 1949).The flash roasters are down-draughted furnaces with cross-section and rabbling equipment based on the hearth roaster design, and the process is similar to that developed by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (Cominco) at Trail, B.C. (Stimmel, Hannay, and McBean, 1936).These furnaces are 20 ft. in diameter. They have three drying hearths through which hot gas is drawn from the combustion chamber by the burner fan. The combustion chamber is 2'1 ft. high above the collecting hearth (27 ft. in No. 4 unit), and the discharge hearth below it is 6 ft. high, so that a large gas offtake is possible. Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. This study focuses on the amosite mining region in South Africa and associated health effects, compared to other mined asbestos fiber types. Historically, dust and fiber levels were high in the amosite mills and mines, and many miners and members of the surrounding communities were exposed to the fibers. Research has shown that amosite produces both benign and malignant disease. Nevertheless, the mesotheliomagenic potential of amosite is several fold lower than crocidolite. The risk of disease associated with amosite exposure is difficult to quantify. Reasons for this include the scarcity of available information, including fiber measurements, and case ascertainment, as well as the juxtaposition of the amosite and crocidolite asbestos seams in South Africa. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "The purpose of the project is to convert current shuttle car utilization on an underground coal mine to best practice by focusing on change-out points and tramming routes, which have a major influence on shuttle car away times. Time studies were an integral part of the project as these enabled the determination of shuttle car away times. An indirect proportional relationship between shuttle car away times and productivity is established. Through the time studies, it is deduced that a third shuttle car will make an insignificant contribution to production when there is only one split open. During this time, maintenance on the third car can be optimized. In order to satisfy the mine’s key performance indicator of keeping shuttle car away times less than 75 seconds, a belt extension must be scheduled after the third split is open. It is established that at any given time, a minimum of two shuttle cars should be used. When cutting on the left-hand-side of the belt road with only two shuttle cars available, the centre and left (left of the feeder breaker) shuttle cars should be used for coal hauling. When cutting on the right-hand-side, the centre and the right-hand-side cars should be used. If only one shuttle car is available, the centre car is the most efficient to use. Alternative anchoring configurations can be employed so as to enable cars (left or right, especially) to reach the opposite extremities of the panel and hence minimize cable length restrictions. The projection of operating costs for mining, processing, and other site operating costs is an exercise which can be fraught with considerable peril. Not only are the physical characteristics of each mineral property unique, but a range of other factors will influence the consultant's approach to compiling cash flow estimates. This paper details some of the techniques used in estimating operating costs for use in order-of-magnitude cost studies and feasibility studies, and describes how to avoid common areas of difficulty. A series of examples relating to open pit gold mining and processing cost estimates illustrate these problems, and various corrective methods are described. The mining and treatment processes, and their associated cost elements, are followed in sequence of operation from on-going ore delineation through to disposal of the product. In addition the problem of assigning management, administration and overhead costs along with taxation allowances is addressed. Of critical importance is the application or possible misapplication of accrual procedures to the cost elements. In many cases such misapplication can introduce more pronounced errors with projects of short duration, such as the typical open pit/C.I.P. gold operation commenced in the last decade. The importance of providing verification of estimates depending upon the standard of the cost study is also investigated, and opinion is provided upon the minimum levels of verification necessary at various stages. Finally, the amalgamation of the various individual cost elements into a coherent whole is reviewed.

As it is my opinion that deep alluvial mining in Victoria and in the Murray Flats in New South Wales is practically in its infancy, and considering that we, the old school of alluvial miners, who have thirty or forty years' experience to guide us, must in the natural order of things hand over the management of our mine, to the younger and less experienced' generation of miners, I thought that as our Association has been formed for the purpose of disseminating information and the exchange of ideas, a few notes on the practical working of alluvial mines might be of some service to aspirants for the position of mining manager.The greatest difficulty the alluvial miner has to contend against is the immense quantity of water contained in the drifts overlying the wash in the gutters or ancient river beds, and to cope with this water successfully and economically is the point to be aimed at by our mining managers; and if they thoroughly understand this part of their business in all its details, they will not only win kudos for themselves, but will be the means of saving large sums of money to the companies they represent, and, in many instances, will make a success of a venture which otherwise might be stopped for want of funds before it is properly proved. At the present time, although we have had over forty years' experience indraining the deep leads of the colony, I regret to say that a large amount of ignorance still prevails amongst both directors and managers.

At its most basic level, minerals project management may be broken down into a series of logical chronological phases, described in this paper as: exploration, discovery; scoping and pre-feasibility; feasibility and approval; project financing and commissioning; operation; expansion and closure. Each phase has its own peculiarities and challenges, any one of which can potentially upset the forward progress of a minerals project.Reference is made to each of these project phases based on the authorÆs many years of first-hand experience, in an attempt to identify issues within the project management spectrum where additional caution may be warranted. Left un-addressed, these issues can cause undue delays in the project timeline, ultimately delaying approval at significant project cost.Finally, reference is made to the Mine ManagerÆs Handbook recently published by the AusIMM which is an excellent project management resource, considered to be very relevant for minerals treatment plant managers, whether the context be constructing, operating, expanding or shutting down.CITATION:Dunlop, J S, 2013. The Canadian mining industry is one of the strongest in the world. Not only does the country produce a sizable amount of minerals and metals, Canada plays host to hundreds of global mining companies, large and small. The country, for the most part, recognizes the importance of natural resource development, particularly mining, to its economic well being. Like any country, though, there are federal and provincial regulations on the books that the industry takes issue with. But there are also certain economic incentive programs in place to encourage exploration and mine investment. And, unlike the industry and the United States government, the Canadian government and mining industry appear to have a reasonable working relationship.

Over the last twenty years, roof support technology has made numerous advances since the original wedge and slotted bolts of the 1950's. By comparison, the roof supports used today are more complex and specialized than the supports used in the past, providing mines with a varied selection of supports from which to choose. As a result, when problems with supports are encountered, it is more difficult to determine whether it is the result of geological changes, poor installation practices, or malfunctioning supports. Recognizing this problem, MSHA's Roof Control Division of the Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center, has undertaken the task of publishing a guide for trouble¬shooting problems encountered with roof support systems. The purpose of this guide is to provide a logical sequence to resolving the most common problems encountered with roof supports. The objective of this paper is to introduce this guide to the mining industry as well as provide insight into the evolution of the guide from its beginnings as rudimentary charts to its more comprehensive present format as a practical guide for use by the mining commu¬nity.

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

As the question of zino recovery from lead blast furnace slags has lately become such an important subject with lead metallurgists, the following description of some of the work carried out in this oonnection by the Sulphide Corporation, at CockleCreek, should prove of interest to those concerned. Early in the life of the works it was realised by the metallurgical staff that a very wide field for investigation lay before them. At the head of these was the late Mr. F. H. Evans, and it was due to his work and suggestions that the question has grown from a mere hypothesis to a commercial undertaking, in so far as these works are concerned.
