Passivation of Fe-Ni-Co alloys during the Caron leach process is thought to result in low cobalt recoveries in ammoniacal ammonium carbonate solutions. A brief review of the available thermochemical data for the (Fe, Ni, Co)-NH3-H2O systems has been undertaken. The stability of the Co(II) and Co(III), Ni(II) and Fe(II) am-mines was examined through the use of speciation and Pourbaix diagrams at 298 and 333 K and at 6 M total ammonia. Increasing the temperature reduces the stability fields of the ammines and generally constrains the thermodynamic window for the leach. The Fe(II) ammines are only thermodynamically stable under reducing conditions. Polarization experiments show that these ammines are unlikely to form if oxygen is present. Fe-Ni-Co alloy passivation may be alleviated by careful management of potential.

Mining One (M1) is often challenged with the task of evaluating deposits considering open cut and/or underground (UG) mining methods. In many near surface deposits a combination of both methods results in the optimum economic means of exploitation. As common as it is to have open pit mines eventually develop into underground mines, theory associated with determining the optimum underground/open pit interface location continues to be subject to refinement. With recent developments in underground software packages, the generation of rudimentary underground mining stopes from basic economic inputs is not only fast, it provides a practical underground mining solution. The determination of the open pit/underground interface is not new to Gemcom's Whittle 4X (Whittle). However, its solution has only ever claimed to be indicative, mainly due the rudimentary nature of how Whittle represents any potential underground mining. The efficient generation of the aforementioned underground mining solution has provided mining engineers with a unique opportunity. Underground mining can now be represented within the Whittle environment to allow the open pit/underground mining scenario to be modelled with increased accuracy. Providing Whittle with the ability to now consider mineable underground stopes combined with the consideration of time value of money (discounting), has delivered a solution with higher credibility than ever before.This paper will elaborate on the potential value gains associated with improved accuracies in the modelling of any potential underground mining in the Whittle environment. Furthermore, it will explain the importance of incorporating time value of money in the optimisation process to provide a consistent solution through to pit selection and final analysis.

As part of the Phase I study activity, a questionnaire was sent to a representative sampling of mining companies to obtain information on the uses, use conditions, personnel policies and other user concerns associated with front-end loaders. On-site visits to several of the mining companies were also parried out and the questionnaire was used during these visits as well. Five major areas were dealt with in the user questionnaire. These included: 1) Front-End Loader Critique - An open-ended form was employed to permit the mining companies to describe the particular things they liked and disliked about front-end loaders, in general, and/ or specific models in particular. 2) Usage - A form indicating the functions performed by front-end loaders and the numbers, makes and models of front-end loaders being used by mining companies. 3) Environment - A form where the user indicated the various types of conditions encountered in their use of front-end loaders. 4) Personnel - A form for describing factors pertaining to the qualifications of front-end loader operators. 5) Miscellaneous and Comments - A form permitting the user to comment on his feelings toward standardization of front-end loader operator stations.

The domestic primary copper industry generates in excess of 600 million t of mining and mineral-processing waste annually. Most of the waste poses negligible environmental threat, but a small fraction, because of toxic or corrosive characteristics, may be subject to regulation under Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) or other pertinent regulations. Among the wastes generated by various copper producers are flue dusts, slags, refinery-bleed solutions, and. acid-plant wastes. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has researched methods to mitigate the environmental threat posed by copper-processing wastes while recovering valuable metals from these materials. Acid-leach processing of flue dusts has been demonstrated feasible along with sulfide treatment of liquid refinery wastes and acid-plant-bleed and gas-cleaning solutions to precipitate dissolved metals. In, addition, the feasibility of removing copper and molybdenum from slag, as well as stabilization of precipitated sulfide wastes by vitrification, have been investigated.

We have had a long history in supporting the development of training material to ensure “safe” blasting. This has been provided as both significant technical guidance to the industry and input into the development of the new industry surface rockbreakers or shotfirers qualification in South Africa (RSA). The learning material supplied to the industry is based on both a classroom knowledge component and an assessment on the practical application of the learning by the trainee blaster on the job under the supervision of the appointed blaster. This training includes all blasting applications which can often extend beyond the “normal” mining environment of open pits, underground and quarries into civil applications such as trenches, blasting close to private buildings, public roads, pipelines, power lines, swimming pools and the removal of concrete structures and building demolitions etc.

"The original segmented intercell Optibar succeeded in reducing the magnitude and occurrence of short circuits. It also improved the specific energy consumption of the process. This paper expands the load current source concept introducing a triple segmented bar. This new bar adds immunity to dirt contacts and open circuits. Moreover, it further improves the standard deviation of current densities. As compared with industrial practices this development should accomplish an 8% specific energy reduction. Also, a plant implemented with BBS should be able to work with 12.5% higher process currents than Walker without compromising the operation.INTRODUCTIONIn 2011 the technology based on current mode was implemented at industrial scale. The success of this technology moved CIM Magazine (Lanktree, 2011) to write in the Jan 2012 issue an upfront story of this technological innovation. To cover the story, the technical reporter Graham Langtree was appointed by Peter Braul Editor of the upfront section. The article tells that “More than 40,000 tonnes of copper have been refined in a year-long test run of Optibar Inc.’s new technology at Barrick Gold’s Zaldívar copper plant in northern Chile. The new segmented intercell bars being used in the Compañía Minera Zaldívar refinery have slashed energy costs, reduced short circuits during refining and allowed the production of heftier, purer sheets of copper – gains that all promise to boost the plant’s margins. A copper refining tank house containing the cell circuits typically consumes 2,000 kWh of electricity to produce a single tonne of grade-A copper. Yet, monitoring the energy efficiency of the Optibar technology after increasing the weight of harvested copper sheets, the project’s engineers recorded a 92 kWh-per-tonne cut in energy consumption, a savings of 4.6 per cent. “Today, with the power prices we have, Optibar technology represents a potential savings for the whole plant of US$1.5 million per year,” says Robert Mayne- Nicholls, executive general manager of Barrick Gold’s Chilean operations.”"

Coal mining has evolved into extensive use of continuous mining machines for development and production. This has resulted in an increase in dependence on the versatile continuous miners. The present-day continuous miners are powerful in terms of rated power but are still plagued by wear of bits which hinders development and production as the bits have to be continuously changed at regular intervals. Previous attempts to analyze bit wear has been either restricted to the theoretical approach and or laboratory testing. This paper discusses about the overall aspect of bit and drum design for different conditions. Using the laboratory model set up, numerical models and field testing, a new bit and drum design was analyzed to evaluate their performance under different conditions. The results proved that a newer bit design and drum design were successful in limiting the amount of wear as well as improving the performance of the continuous miner and production.

l. INTRODUCTION. IN casting a thermal balance of the heat generated and absorbed in a blast-furnace treating lead-, copper- and similar non-ferrous ores, assumptions have always to be made for the values of the heat of formation of slag. ? Considering that the larger part of the charge introduced into the furnace comes out in the form of slag, the significance becomes apparent of a lack of heat-values for the singulo-silicate, which is the type of slags commonly made. The aim of the present investigation is to supply these heat-values as far as possible with the apparatus and the time available. The heats of formation of the ferrous and manganous bi-silicates have been determined by Le Chatelier; 1 those of some silicates other than iron and manganese by Tschernobaeff:2 finally Richards 3 gives a figure for a copper blast-furnace slag of known composition. The existing data and those resulting from the present investigation are assembled in Table VI. II. MATERIALS USED. The materials used in the experiments were silica, ferrous oxide, and calcium carbonate. Silica.-The silica sold in the market as chemically pure usually contains small amounts of magnesia, lime, and alumina, and is therefore not suited for the work. Cameroon's mining industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The value of petroleum output was estimated at $1 billion.2 The 1982 gross domestic product (GOP) was approximately $8.4 billion. During 1981, crude oil export revenues increased in value 30%, comprising approximately 56% of Cameroon's total export earnings. The 1982-87 5-year plan emphasized, hydrocarbon and agricultural development and targeted the exploitation of bauxite and clay deposits. New petroleum legislation was promulgated on November 26, 1982. Public Law No. 82-20 detailed hydrocarbon companies' obligations concerning oil and gas discoveries and exploitation. In general, the Cameroon Government has participated in joint ventures with private companies and has levied a 57.5% petroleum tax plus adjustable royalties. Exploration expenses were paid by concession holding companies, and the Government in the past has reimbursed 50% of expenses under certain conditions.

The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores, and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means acid methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes of physical separation. Thus, in 1919, Coghill and Bonardi 3/ published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/ Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates 6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama.

Part of the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine production is in the process of transitioning from the deep ore zone (DOZ) mine to the deep mill level zone (DMLZ) mine. The DMLZ mine is the next lift in the caving series and lies 500 m below the current DOZ footprint.In order to reduce the need for a very expensive additional ventilation system for the DMLZ mine, it was decided to reconfigure some infrastructure and upgrade the performance of the three existing DOZ mixed flow ventilation fans in situ, reducing the new fans required to two. This was far less costly than providing complete new installations.These fans are installed in individual underground chambers in DOZ mine exhaust drifts and connected to the DMLZ mine exhaust drifts system in 7 m × 7 m airways size, through sets of 6 m diameter by 500 m high raises.The upgrade process involved replacement of motors, fan shafts and bearings. The existing 1600 kW DOZ mixed flow fans are 3500 mm diameter and operate at a speed of 595 rev/min and were originally designed to deliver 390 m3/s at 3.3 kPa. Efficiency optimisation may be required at a later date.The upgraded DMLZ fans are required to deliver 425 m3/s at 3.7 kPa and it was necessary to increase in motor size and speed to 2200 kW at 710 rev/min. Knoop hardness measurements were carried out on large grains of iodide titanium containing different amounts of oxygen. For each oxygen content the hardness is recorded ainingas a function of the crystal orientation and of the angle 4 between the indenter diagonal and the projection of the C (hexad) axis in the surface. The results can be expressed by the following relation; hardness = n-k cos 2ø, where n and k are constants for a given oxygen content and crystal surface orientation. A NISOTROPY of hardness is a well-known phe-nomenon and has been reported for many metals.1-3 At the present time, however, such information is not available in the literature for titanium. Consequently, a systematic study of the simultaneous effects of oxygen content and crystallographic orientation on the hardness of titanium was undertaken in this laboratory. Evaluations of oxygen content in titanium are frequently carried out through hardness tests. Although such procedures may be justified in small grain specimens, the results of the present investigation indicate that the anisotropy of hardness should be taken into account in the case of coarsegrained specimens as well as in the case of pronounced preferred orientation. Materials and Experimental Procedures Iodide titanium, 99.99 pet pure and containing of the order of 0.002 wt pet O, was used throughout this investigation. The metal was arc melted in an argon atmosphere and cold rolled into strips 1/16 in. thick. These strips were subsequently recrystal-lized and strain annealed in vacuum (10" mm Hg or better) at 850°C in order to produce crystals varying in diameter from 10 to 25 mm. Oxygen was introduced into selected large crystals by heating at 700°C in an atmosphere of pure oxygen under an observed pressure of approximately 50 mm Hg. Each sample was subsequently annealed in vacuum at 850°C for 100 hr, in order to homogenize the oxygen content throughout the specimen. It was found that longer annealing was not necessary, for no change of surface hardness in a given direction was detected after prolonged annealing. The oxygen content was determined by the difference in weight of the specimens before and after the oxidation-annealing cycle. The accuracy of oxygen determination is within ±0.1 mg in samples weighing 0.5 to 1 g. A vacuum fusion analysis of oxygen was performed on several samples and gave results in good agreement with the ones obtained by the weight change. It should be emphasized that expected weight losses through evaporation of the metal in vacuum at 850°C' are many orders of magnitude lower than the precision of these measurements. Following the annealing treatment, both oxidized and unoxidized crystals were carefully polished. All detectable traces of surface cold working were removed by repeated polishing and etching. Laue back reflection X-ray patterns were taken for each crystal for the purpose of determining the orientation and ascertaining the absence of substructures detectable by this method. Hardness measurements, using a 1 kg load, were subsequently carried out on a Tukon hardness tester equipped with a Knoop indenter. The Knoop indenter was used throughout this work because indentations obtained by means of a Vickers indenter are considerably distorted due to the anisotropy of the elastic constants in titanium. This method was chosen in preference to alternative driven systems because it was quieter and more versatile if obstructions were encountered. New equipment was designed and made specifically for the project, and stringent health and safety regulations had to be observed.

All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ‘correct’ (or’ accurate’) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. This paper discusses a number of relevant issues that highlight the extent to which, in reality, a model of uncertainty is dependent on the random function model chosen. Often in the presence of large number of conditioning data most available random function models will provide similar models of uncertainty. When conditioning is scarce, the resulting models of uncertainty will vary more widely, since the final output will depend mostly on the underlying assumptions of the model chosen. The application described in this paper is taken from a large porphyry Cu operation in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting models of uncertainty. In particular, some of the decisions involved include the number of conditioning data and the underlying Random Function model used (Gaussian or indicator-based). Also, implementation-specific parameters must be decided upon, such as grid size used, random number generator, simple or ordinary kriging, multiple-grid simulation, and simulation of irregular three-dimensional bodies (as opposed to regular grids). Some practical guidelines are proposed to deal with these decisions.

There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. Kaolin is defined and described as an industrial mineral. In addition the types of deposits -primary and secondary are defined and the genesis of kaolin from feldspars and other minerals discussed. The major deposits of the world found in the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, and Czechoslovakia are described along with many of the minor kaolin deposits. Four areas which have very large deposits of kaolin could, with technological breakthroughs to reduce viscosity significantly, become important factors in supplying the world markets which are increasing year by year.

"Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanodynamic and chronopotentiometric techniques were used to characterize the effects of DXG-F7®, a commercial smoothing agent, on copper electrodeposition onto 316L stainless steel from a synthetic electrolyte containing 40 g/L copper (Cu2+), 160 g/L sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 20 mg/L chloride (Cl-) at 40oC. The findings were compared against results using HydroStar® 4208, a modified polysaccharide. The nucleation overpotential and plating potential observed in cyclic voltammetry and galvanodynamic testing showed that neither DXG-F7 nor HydroStar significantly polarized acidic copper electrodeposition. Subtle differences between the additives were found during EIS testing and modeling, but more research will be needed to fully understand these differences. Surface-roughness measurements of two-hour deposits indicate that DXG-F7 and HydroStar produced smoother deposits as their concentrations in the electrolyte increased. No difference in the surface roughness of deposits was detected between the additives. Based on the experimental evidence resulting from the laboratory testing, no significant difference was found between DXG-F7 and HydroStar at 20 mg/L Cl- concentration, with the exception that DXG-F7 dissolves more easily in water than HydroStar. Introduction Cathode deposits obtained from acidified copper sulfate electrolyte(s) without organic additives are often soft, coarsely crystalline and nodular (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Therefore, small amounts of organic additives are added to the electrolyte to produce level and dense cathodes during copper electrowinning. The action of organic additives is thought to be due to their adsorption on the surfaces of the newly formed copper grains. Hence, any copper grain that grows excessively fast adsorbs a layer of organic additive, which inhibits growth. The result is a smoother and harder deposit of suitable purity (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). In part I of our four-part series on the examining of copper electrowinning smoothing agents, a review of previously published work on organic additives used during copper electrowinning was presented (Moats, Luyima and Cui, 2016). In the review, it was noted that many tankhouses had switched from guar to other saccharide-based products such as HydroStar and DXG-F7."

The Freeport-McMoRan Main Pass Mine development in the Gulf of Mexico is a complex designed to extract up to 67 million long tons of sulphur over a 40 year period. The initial development includes 15 platforms and 13 bridges located in water depths ranging from 208 to 214 feet, approximately 15 miles east of the Mississippi River Delta. Three additional platforms were designed and installed for the oil and gas development in the complex. Over 110, 000 short tons of steel were required to fabricate the structures. As the sulphur is extracted significant subsidence is predicted over a major portion of complex in the shape of a very large bowl. Vertical elevations are predicted to change as much as 65 feet. Horizontal movements and mudline slope changes cause adjacent platform decks to move as much as 30 feet relative to each other. Differential soil movement is predicted between piling of individual platforms causing the piling to spread, resulting in significant lateral loading on the piling. Relative vertical soil movements are predicted along the lengths of the piles which causes "up drag" or "down drag" forces on individual piles. This paper addresses the design of the piling for the structures in the complex. Design criteria will be discussed explaining how the more traditional offshore environmental and gravity loadings were combined with the unique loading caused by subsidence. Design and analysis procedures will be explained and analysis results presented. These results include the incorporation of 100 ksi steel in thicknesses up to 5 inches in some of the tubular piles. Comparisons will be made between conventional offshore structures and these structures designed to accommodate the subsidence.

According to the analysis of surface powered haulage accidents involving off-highway haul trucks in openpit mining, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), reported 1,300 fatal accidents from 1990 to 2005. Of these, 163 were considered off-highway truck haulage accidents, and at least 23 involved collisions of an off-highway truck with a neighboring vehicle or a worker on foot (Nieto and Dagdelen, 2006). In general, an average of 18 nonfatal accidents and three fatal accidents occurred in openpit mining per year when equipment backed over the edge of an embankment, stockpile or dump point (Fessak, et al., 2003). The specific problems that need to be solved can be determined by carefully studying the accidents involving haulage trucks (Marrara, et al., 2004). Solutions to haulage truck safety must consider the human factors affecting each task even when engineering solutions seem most appropriate. In surface haulage, human performance becomes a critical issue because of the unusual demand the vehicle?s places on their human operators: ? Roadways and working areas change frequently in mining operations. ? The sheer mass of mining equipment such as trucks requires control inputs (e.g., braking) far in advance of the desired action. ? Rough roads, loading and unloading impacts can subject the driver to dangerous shocks and vibration. ? Visibility is sharply curtailed by the bulk of the vehicle generating large blind spots. All of the above issues can be attributed partially to the lack of visibility (Pyles et al., 2003). Driver visibility and communications are key issues to reduce mining truck accidents. Analysis of fatalities and injuries involving mining equipment demonstrates the need to develop new intervention and control strategies to mitigate the risks associated with mining equipment operation. Ongoing development of these and other new strategies is required to achieve a reduction of injury in the mining industry
