Quality control is essential for augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles (also known as continuous flight auger (CFA) piles outside the United States) and augered displacement (AD) piles since the pile is constructed below the ground surface out of the direct sight of the personnel constructing and inspecting the pile. ACIP piles are being successfully constructed to support high-rise structures, arenas and stadiums, mass transit systems, and power and industrial facilities. The use of AD pile technology is also gaining ground in the United States, typically utilizing proprietary systems such as Omega (currently utilzed by Richard Goettle Inc., and LG Barcus and Sons, Inc.), Berkel, and DeWal (currently utilized by Morris-Shea). Different types of ACIP/AD pile installation equipment are shown in Figures 1 and 2. ACIP piles are installed into granular and cohesive soils, and soft rock to lengths currently approaching 130 ft (39.5 m), with diameters up to 24 to 36 inches (610 to 915 mm), and sustaining design loads approaching 900 kips (4000 kN). Current AD pile installation equipment in the United States is capable of installing up to 79-ft-long (24 m) piles with diameters ranging from 12 to 18 inches (305 mm to 460 mm).

Many massive sulfide deposits and districts around the World contain rocks that are variously referred to as ?exhalites?, banded iron formation (IF), ?Algoma-type? IF, ferruginous chert, jasper, jasperoid, cherty tuff, tuffite, tuffaceous exhalite, chloritic IF or sulfide IF. With few exceptions, such rocks are thought to be (in part) fossil hydrothermal sediments deposited from hydrothermal fluids vented into a submarine rift environment. Such hydrothermal sediments are associated with a wide variety of ancient base-metal sulfide deposits (e.g., Cyprus-, Besshi-, Kuroko-, and Broken-Hill-type deposits), and hydrothermal sediments are commonly associated with some of the largest base metal sulfide deposits in the world. Analogs of ancient hydrothermal sediments can be found around many modern seafloor hydrothermal deposits which themselves precipitate from high-temperature (350°-400°C) hydrothermal fluids. Hydrothermal fluids are quenched on contact with ambient seawater, and most of the metals are immediately precipitated to form the mound and chimney deposits. However, for kinetic and solubility reasons, not all metals and other species are immediately precipitated at the vent site. Fine particles (up to several hundred microns in diameter) of sulfides, sulfates, carbonates, oxides, silica, Fe-oxyhydroxides, clays, and other phases are precipitated from the hydrothermal fluids in the water column above the deposits. These particles or "particulates" are carried upward for several hundred meters in a buoyant hydrothermal plume (which is typically several hundred meters thick) until it reaches a neutral density, and disperses laterally from the vent site. Modelling of plume dynamics has shown that the majority of particulates are deposited by gravitational settling a few hundred meters from the vent site, and Å99% of particulates are deposited within 3 kilometers. However, signals from modern plumes have been detected even hundreds of kilometers from their source. Factors which can affect the morphology of the plume (and the resultant fallout pattern) include: particulate size, shape and density, bottom topography, and the direction and velocity of bottom currents.

A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. Between 45,000 and 50,000 claims for subsidence are submitted each year to the German hard coal industry. In order to improve the service to claimants a quality management was established in 2005. This paper describes the process now used for handling these claims. A quality check has also been carried out by way of a customer survey, which was performed by an independent research agency. The results of the survey are presented in this paper. In Germany, research into mining subsidence mainly involves the prediction of ground movements caused by deep mining operations. Special areas of research are subsidence reducing aspects of the extraction panel planning, especially from the point of view of mining dynamics, as well as securing and restoration measures. This work seeks to prevent or minimize mining-induced damages close to the surface, for instance, buildings or infrastructure installations (such as pipelines), or underground mine openings (e.g. shafts). Roof collapses and surface fractures caused by shallow mine workings of an earlier era currently constitute a special area of investigation.

Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

The North Shore Connector (NSC) project will extend the Allegheny County Port Authority?s Light Rail Transit System from downtown Pittsburgh below the Allegheny River to the North Shore via twin bore tunnels. Jet grouting, diaphragm walls, and soil mixing were selected as cost-effective technically viable ground improvement and support of excavation techniques. Jet grouting was specified to provide break-out (egress) and break-in (ingress) block sections at the tunnel boring machine (TBM) launching and receiving pits. Jet grout treatment was also used adjacent to buildings with shallow foundations and below retaining walls along the tunnel alignment. A new method for measuring jet grout column diameter based on electrical resistivity was employed on the project. New equipment was introduced in the U.S for constructing soil mix temporary support of excavation using a soil-mix technique termed Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) due to the use of two vertical cutting wheels that have evolved from diaphragm wall trench cutter technology. The system allows for continuous water tight soil mix panel construction including steel beams. This paper highlights some applications of jet grouting and various support of excavation systems (e.g. slurry walls, cement bentonite walls and CSM walls), including new innovative techniques (e.g. Cyljet and CSM) used under the constraints of an urban environment.

The efficiency of heap leaching is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (i.e., channeling and ponding) that result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but for agglomeration to be successful in copper leaching, an acid-resistant binder is needed to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory method to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it ?feels right.? This paper reports on several procedures that have been developed to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution. These procedures have been used to identify binders that would be suitable for copper heap leaching.

The perforating of multiple tubingless completions, in which two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, presents two basic problems. First, good completion practices require an eficient perforator that leaves no debris to interfere with subsequent completion operations. Second, and of more complicated nature, a system is needed for controlling the direction of fire so that adjacent strings are not damaged. Development of of a 2-in. OD, steel retrievable, shnped-charge gun has solved the first problem. The second was resolved through development of three different devices to provide directional perforating for the two types of completion methods being employed today. These include a mechanical orienting device and two self-orienting radiation devices. Conceivably, the latter methods could be adapted to the directional perforating (of .upper zones) of conventional dual and triple completions without removing production tubing and packers. INTRODUCTION The recent trend to multiple tubingless completions,' wherein two or more strings of 27/8-in. OD casing are installed in the same borehole, has presented two basic perforating problems. The first problem to be overcome was the design of a gun that would result in efficient perforations without causing debris to bridge in these small-diameter casings. The second problem was, of course, to devise a system for controlling the direction of fire such that adjacent strings would not be damaged. The problem of gun debris in slim-casing completions has been well defined in the numerous 27/8-in. single tubingless completions which have been effected during recent years with the expendable-type perforators. Failure of expendable-gun debris to settle out properly, even with good gun break-up, has resulted in bridging inside these small-diameter casings. This, in turn, has interfered with completion and re-conditioning operations. The past two years have clearly shown, in fact, that debris problems are not confined to this small range of casing with most designs of expendable-type guns. A high incidence of bridging has even been reported in 4%-in. OD casing. The perforating of multiple tubingless completions has entailed, therefore, the development of a completely debris-free gun of adequate performance, as well as the necessary devices to provide positive directional perforating in the two completion methods presently being employed. THE GUN —DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS The design of a shaped-charge gun for slim-casing perforating has presented a maze of interrelated prob-lems. Since the primary specification has been leveled at efficient charge performance with complete elimination of gun debris, it has been necessary to develop a retrievable steel-carrier gun of tubular construction to house the charges. The carrier must be retrievable through 2.29-in. API pump-seating nipples which are usually installed in 2 7/8-in. strings. To provide for recovery of the gun from the well, swelling of the carrier on firing must be carefully controlled. Control of swelling automatically means control of explosive weight in the shaped charge which, in turn, influences charge performance. Carrier swelling also depends upon the confinement pressure at the level being perforated, which imposes a hydrostatic pressure-depth limitation. Burr interference on the wall of the carrier, resulting from passage of the jet through the carrier wall, must be eliminated by suitable design. Clearly then, a satisfactory shaped-charge gun design for slim-casing operations represents a fine balance between carrier swelling, hydrostatic pressure, explosive weight and charge performance. Additionally, to lend itself to directional perforating, the gun design must provide a positive locking mechanism for individual charges within the gun carrier. Reduce the danger to personnel and destruction of equipment caused by fires on surface coal augers. Approach: A reasonably priced reliable system which automatically senses a fire and activates dry chemical extinguishers, has been built and field tested. How It Works: Heat sensors mounted in the engine compartment and hydraulic hose areas detect the fire, usually before the operator does. This causes the system to automatically discharge A-B-C class dry chemical extinguisher through a fixed piping system.

Thermodynamic data has been obtained for oleate chemisorption at fluorite (CaF2) and calcite (CaCO3) surfaces using adsorption isotherms determined previously at room and elevated temperatures by in-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS). Linear regression analysis was used to statistically derive free energy data as a function of temperature assuming oleate chemisorption followed Langmuir-type adsorption. Enthalpy and entropy changes were subsequently ascertained from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and fundamental thermodynamic relationships. Essentially, no difference in the free energy of chemisorption at the two mineral surfaces was found; however, the differences in enthalpy and entropy values were significant. By comparison, the results showed that oleate chemisorption at fluorite surfaces was more extensive and more entropically driven due to more water being displaced. Results correlate well with values determined in the literature for other mineral collector systems. These findings help explain the greater hydrophobic character of fluorite than calcite in both the absence and presence of oleate.

Typically, pile head displacements are measured relative to a purpose-built reference system, which is assumed to be fixed. This study presents a simplified error analysis of this assumption, illustrates the potential magnitude of these errors, and proposes an improved method of pile head displacement monitoring.

The purpose of this research contract was to develop and test a Saran latex modified portland cement concrete lagging to be used as a replacement for wood lagging. The scope of work performed was divided into four phases: Phase I - Engineering Criteria; Phase-! I1 - Design Study; Phase III - Fabrication of Lagging; and Phase IV - Prototype Demonstration Project. Each phase of work was completed and is described in detail in this report. The prototype latex modified concrete lagging developed in this program weighed 52 pounds. When tested in flexure, it supported center point loading of 4500 pounds and under 1/4 point loading it supported loadings of 7000 pounds. Deflections at maximum loading ranged from 1/2 to 1 inch. Maximum deflections exceed 2 inches. The lagging does not exhibit catastrophic failure. Two hundred and twenty of the LMC lagging were produced and shipped to the Bunker Hill Company in Kellogg, Idaho for installation in their mine at the 17 level. The lagging are performing satisfactory after 22 months exposure in the mine.

"Due to the randomness of all factors influencing the sintering operation, a two-stepped procedure is proposed to find the best way of using stocked fines at a plant producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry. The approach is based on the following: (1) predict the result of the sintering operation by establishing the best multilinear regression model using some of the characteristics of the loaded material; and (2) find the best solution under a minimizing cost criteria by solving a linear optimization problem using the regression equation plus constraints on the feed and product. IntroductionSome tests carried out using 20% to 30% of sinter in the material loaded into a 60 000 KVA Tysland-Hole electric furnace producing Fe-Mn alloys for the steelmaking industry indicated: (1) a meaningful decrease in the off-gas temperature and, consequently, a better energy use due to the material higher porosity; (2) more uniform heat distribution as a consequence of the electrode reaction zone enlargement; (3) an improved furnace control resulting in a smoother operation; and (4) a decrease in gas production facilitating the off-gas treatment. For some years, this plant used only the coarse fraction of the Mn ores, thus stocking all the received and own-generated fine particles. In view of the mentioned results, a strategy for increasing the use of stocked fines was formulated, including a step where it was necessary to decide which components and respective quantities should be used in the blends to be sintered (Almeida, 1984).It is well known that several factors affect productivity and energy consumption in sinter production, also influencing the product quality. Raw materials characteristics, namely chemical and size composition, affect permeability to gases and may or may not allow a deeper bed. In general, finer ores decrease permeability, increasing electricity consumption by fans, but due to their higher specific surface area, react more completely with other components in the mixture. For coke granulometry, a compromise must be obtained in order not to burn it too quickly nor to widen the flame front, therefore decreasing productivity. Decreasing coke in the blend also acts in sinter bonding, decreasing its consistency and increasing crushing and return fines. Moisture addition also influences components mixing, pre-agglomeration, bed permeability and, consequently, sintering productivity. Therefore, optimum conditions must be established for both a given sintering plant and the components in the feed (Dawson, 1993)."

The accident at Unit No. 2 of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor (TMI-2) on 28 March 1979 was the worst nuclear accident in US history and crippled the nuclear industry. An international Vessel Investigation Project was formed to assess the integrity of the vessel. However, it was not possible to remove specimens from the lower head until January?March 1990. Fourteen of the fifteen specimens removed by electrical discharge machining were from under the debris pile that accumulated on the lower head due to melting of approximately 19 000 kg (45%) of the core. Specimens were previously cut from the lower head of a cancelled reactor of very similar size and design destined for Midland, Michigan. These specimens were subjected to controlled heating cycles with peak temperatures from 800°C to 1100°C for periods of 1 to 100 minutes. The initial study qualitatively compared the structures in the 15 specimens from TMI-2 to the control specimens from the Midland lower head. The writer used the same specimens and employed microindentation hardness traverses, electron microprobe analysis, and selective etching followed by quantitative metallography (by image analysis) to obtain a far more detailed description of the thermal exposure experienced.

New developments in the pipe conveyor and belt are advanced to address the growth in the capacity, length and complexity of pipe conveyor systems. Improved belt construction can offer better stability during horizontal curves and resistance to twist. Low rolling resistance rubber compound can significantly lower the power consumption and belt tension, producing capital and operation cost savings. Dynamic analysis, when used to analyze the conveyor?s starting and stopping behavior, can improve the design and reliability of long overland pipe conveyor systems. For these three aspects, technical backgrounds and field installations as examples are discussed in this paper.

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. This extends to sample preparation too when reducing particle size and dividing the sample in the process.CITATION:Vogel, D A, 2017. Anglo Coal South Africa mines coal for both the domestic and export market using open cast and strip mining methods. To establish a mine, a process is set in place to gather ever increasing amounts of geological and metallurgical data to confirm a proven reserve. Increasingly, geotechnical data are also included in this process to confirm that reserve is easily and safely mineable. The mine design process is an iterative one using a combination of numerical modelling and empirical data to arrive at a mining layout that is both, practical, productive and safe. In South Africa it is a legal requirement to compile a code of practice to combat rock fall and slope instability accidents and these have to be revised annually, reinforcing the iterative process of continual improvement. To ensure best practise occurs, all Anglo Coal operations are subjected to annual 2nd party audits and ad hoc 3rd party audit by independent consultants. This paper attempts to explain the process described above in a concise, but understandable manner. 1.0 GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Ecca sediments date from the Permian period and the coal deposits were formed in glaciated valleys on a basement of Dolomite, Ryolite or Granophyre rock types. The sediments overlying the coal deposits are typically flat lying and multiple bedded. The sediments consist of mudstones, shales and sandstones and are generally capable of forming stable highwalls given the time that they must stand up for. Anglo Coal extracts coal from the Witbank, Highveld and Vereeniging coalfields. The Witbank coalfields contain five seams numbered from the base upwards, 1 to 5 Seam; Highveld coalfield the 2 and 4 Seam and the Vereening area the seams are described as Top, Middle and Bottom seams. Coal deposited over the basement Dolomite formation display very erratic dips, as contemporaneous subsidence occurred in some instances over sinkholes that were forming, resulting in local thickening of the coal deposit and resulting in strata that dips toward the centre of the sinkhole.

Underground stone mining represents an emerging sector for the U.S. mining industry. As this expansion takes mines under deeper cover and as more efficient mining methods are utilized, adequate stone pillar design methods will become more important. It is the purpose of this paper to examine current design practices and to discuss issues for safe mine layouts so that a rational first approach towards balancing the demands for increased production can be weighed against increased risk to worker safety from rib instabilities and pillar failures. Seventy-two stone mine pillar designs were examined. Pillars with width-to- height ratios below 1.5 and subjected to excessive stress levels appear more likely to fail. When width-to- height ratios fall below 1 .0, defects in the pillars, such as through-going discontinuities, can have a significant influence on stability. Discontinuity persistence, dip, material properties, and orientation are important factors controlling pillar strength. The influence of discontinuity dip, a characteristic easily identified in the field, was examined so that its presence could be accounted for in developing generalized guidelines for pillar design.

Complete stress-strain-volume change behaviour including post peak softening behaviour of the samples, are presented. Strength and deformation parameters are given.
