The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

"When certain gold ores containing pyrite, graphite, humates and fumates or other organic compounds which are possibly adsorbed on clay minerals are treated with aqueous solution of alkali metal cyanide, the aurocyanide complex which forms is adsorbed by these ""pregrobbing"" species in the ore. Dissolution of gold proceeds until chemical equilibrium is attained between the cyanide complex adsorbed by the ore and in solution.Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) may be used to decrease the adsorptive activity of the prerobbing species in the ore. It has successfully improved recovery at Holt-McDermott Mine and is highly biodegradable.INTRODUCTION Precious metal-bearing ores containing preg-robbing species are poorly amenable to standard cyanidation techniques. The ""preg-robbing"" impurities with which they are associated tend to adsorb the gold cyanide complexes and carry them through the circuit to the tailings. Also, gold may be associated with these impurities in the ore and not be leached by the cyanide complexing agents used in conventional cyanidation techniques.Methods for dealing with the problem of preg-robbinq impurities in gold ores are:Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), in which granular activated carbon is added to compete with preg-robbing species for the gold cyanide complexes. This process can improve gold recovery in mildly preg-robbing ores especially when fine carbons with very high activities are used. However, with severely graphitic ore, the carbon associated with the rock may outperform the granular activated charcoal.Chemical Oxidation, in which the ore is subjected to preliminary chemical oxidation techniques to oxidize carbonaceous materials using such diverse reagents including ozone, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorates and oxygen prior to subjecting the oxidized ore to standard cyanidation treatment to extract gold. This is generally a costly method and will not prove economical on a low-grade ore."

This paper briefly describes the characteristics and induced factors of coal mining bumps based on the investigation of recent bumps accidents occurred in China. According to the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamic and dissipate structure, the process of strain energy accumulation and dissipation in the ?Coal-Surrounding Rock? system (CSRS) is discussed during the preparation of coal bumps. In addition, a series of experiments are conducted to analyze the relationship between bump-prone property and micro-structural characteristics of coal. The process of coal bumps induced by propagation of fractures and deterioration of coal mass properties are also analyzed systematically.

"Dare-Zereshk deposit is one of the deposits supplies ore for Taft copper Complex in Iran Yazd province. This deposit is situated underneath a village the same name. Prior to mining activities, the village and its agricultural lands should be dislocated and deserted. This paper discusses about sustainability factors in this area including: Social and environmental effects of mining, dislocation and substitution of communities, created and lost jobs, financial and economic factors, quality of life index, infrastructures and post-mining land use. Studies have been performed by coupling Geographical Information System (GIS) with decision support tools such as Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Through these studies revealed that considering the infrastructures developed for mine and plants, earned incomes and changing the community, mining activity in this area not only increases the social and regional sustainability but also improves it to a higher level."

THE meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sept. 12 to 15, inclusive, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute. It was at Wilkes-Barre, in 1871, that the foundation was laid for the great institution that now includes in its roster the greatest names. in mining engineering in every civilized country of the world. The founders of the Institute, with rare prescience, established a common ground upon which all mining engineers, whatever particular branch they might consider most pertinent, could stand securely, assured of a deep-seated interest from their brethren similarly minded in other localities. So wise and clear was the vision of the founders that every engineer connected with mining has found it beneficial, not to say indispensable, to maintain his connection with the Institute and to increase his technical enthusiasm through the medium of the valuable technical publications. NVI Mining’s Myra Falls operation is a forty-year-old underground mining operation feeding a 4,000 metric tonnes per day concentrator. The current mill, built in 1985, was designed to process a massive sulphide ore-body. This orebody, known as the HW, contains about 50% pyrite. Minerals of value are chalcopyrite and sphalerite, with precious metals occurring in all mineral types. By 1997, mining of a new ore-body, known as Battle-Gap, commenced. Mineralogically complex, the new orebody contains about 15% pyrite copper minerals, including primary chalcopyrite and secondary bornite, chalcocite and tennantite, combined with increased galena and sphalerite. Flotation performance generally decreased with increasing amounts of Battle-Gap ore types, with both copper concentrate quality (increased lead and zinc content) and copper recoveries being affected. Following significant metallurgical test-work, a new, fully sequential copper-lead-zinc flotation flow sheet and reagent scheme was developed. This sequential flow sheet was progressively installed and commissioned during 2006. Copper concentrate lead and zinc smelter penalty contents have been reduced by some 40%, while increasing copper recovery by 10%.

The Fe-TiC composite powder was synthesized in situ by carbothermal reduction of ilmenite. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The effects of the reaction temperature (1300 °C - 1500°C) and milling time of precursors on the Fe-TiC conversion and powder morphologies were investigated using XRD and SEM method. The synthesized products showed that composite with iron matrix and titanium carbide as a reinforced phase was formed.

In the Summer of 2011, emergency repairs to the Jefferson Memorial North Plaza and Seawall were completed. These repairs were necessitated by settlement and lateral movement of the seawall and North Plaza which prompted the National Park Service (NPS) to initiate an investigation as to the possible causes of the movement, and commission a design for its mitigation. Information gathered from extensive instrumentation on site led to the design of a movement mitigation scheme that included demolition of the Ashlar Seawall and reconstruction of a new seawall. The new seawall foundation is an A-Wall consisting of vertical caissons and battered pipe piles connected to the seawall itself. The scheme provides resistance to future vertical and lateral movement of the North Plaza and the new seawall. Repair to the seawall and plaza began in December 2009, and was completed in August 2011. This paper discusses the mechanisms believed to be responsible for settlement and lateral movement, summarizes the procedure followed for design of the mitigation, and describes the construction methods and some challenges faced during the repair.

Competition from foreign coal producers could displace as much as 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of US coal bound for power plants located near waterways. But, according to a Maryland-based coal consultant, it could be worse. Theoretically, about 52 Mt (57 million st) of domestic coal could be vulnerable to imports by 1990, said Forrest Hill, of Hill & Associates of Annapolis. Hill was speaking to about 150 coal industry executives and experts at the third annual Coal Marketing Strategies Conference in November. Most were at the Denver, CO conference to pick up tips on how to sell coal in an oversupplied market. Imports threaten domestic markets Of the 200 utilities studied by Hill and his staff, 119 are situated near major waterways, he said. However, most of those waterways are not equipped to handle coal from the shipping lanes. Good news for US coal producers. But don't breathe too easily. Foreign coal still poses a major threat to domestic markets, Hill continued. The strength of the US dollar is an obvious factor. But easy access to US utilities located on waterways combined with low rates for ocean vessels give foreign producers another edge. And foreign mines are typically low cost producers. For example, Hill said Colombia's huge Cerrejon mine can deliver coal to an Illinois power plant for $47.87/t ($43.39 per st). That compares to $52.85/t ($47.95 per st) from a Kentucky coal mine. Also, Colombian coal producers can generate a cash flow even if the coal sells for $27.50/t ($25 per st). The main competition US producers face from abroad, as Hill sees it, comes from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Poland, South Africa, and, perhaps, from Venezuela. Domestic producers, however, do have some things going for them. Most US coal buyers, Hill said, "are not wild about the idea of buying foreign coal." A 10% price advantage or pressure from public utility commissions would be needed to force some of them to buy foreign coal, he said. Some of the utilities contacted said they would not commit to more than one-third of their stockpiles to a foreign source. Another advantage for US producers is that they have room in their long-term contracts to cut prices and still maintain a profit, Hill said. Railroads, too, have high profit margins written into their rate structures. They are also aware of the import threat. Therefore, they may reduce their rates accordingly to keep their markets. Marketing's role The energy price shocks of 1972 and 1976 caused major adjustments in world economics. Coal was no exception. High oil prices caused many utilities to look at less expensive coal. As the market improved, coal prices began to respond, said R. Gale Daniel, of Anaconda Minerals Co. But clean air legislation and the strengthening dollar caused havoc in the coal markets, he said. The price of oil crashed, taking with it predictions of record coal use. The result is an oversupply of coal that has led to price cutting. Mining industry requires constant adaptation to its practices in response to the dynamic change of the societal demand. Little information exists regarding how the US metal mining engineering education is prepared to meet with its industry needs due to the increase in critical minerals driven by the green energy transitions. This study aims to provide industrial perspectives on the current US metal mining engineering education and areas for improvement. An online survey with both closed- and open-ended questions were designed to seek opinions from the US mining industry. Findings indicated a shortage of qualified graduates from the current US metal mining engineering education system. The qualifications need to be improved include engineering sciences underlying mining methods, mining design experience, mining feasibility study, the connection between theory and practice, and understanding of the overall mining operation. The survey also identified future desired qualifications. The most desired ones in the next 5 years include an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed and sufficient experience in the field. Respondents, regardless of the nature of their affiliated mining companies, unanimously recommended that collaborations between the industry and academia should be enhanced. The analysis of the results concluded four recommendations: (1) involve more multiple stakeholders in reforming mining education programs, (2) reinforce field experiences as a key part of mining engineering education programs, (3) enhance a closer collaboration between academia and industry, and (4) integrate emerging technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence/virtual reality) guided by pedagogical theories into new mining engineering curriculums.

"A comparison of data from INPUT, GEOTEM, and MEGATEM airborne electromagnetic (AEM) systems over the Aldermac deposit, Québec, Canada, was undertaken to evaluate the relative ef¬ficiency of these systems for the detection of small, deep conductors. The Aldermac orebody was mined between 1933 and 1934 to a depth of 200 m. A deeper mineralized zone was discovered in 1987. The MEGATEMII system was used to acquire 90- and 30-Hz data over the deposit in 2003 as part of a research project. These MEGATEMII data were compared with data acquired by other AEM systems (GEOTEM and INPUT), and the results show that the MEGATEMII response is ten times larger than the other sys¬tems. For the dB/dt response, 30 Hz gives a better signal-to-noise ratio, whereas 90 Hz has a better signal-to-noise ratio on the B-field.The data were evaluated by numerical modeling. The deposit was best represented by a complex mod¬el, comprising two weakly conductive bodies to approximate the alteration halo, two deeper prisms repre¬senting known orebodies, and three bodies ranging in thickness from 3 to 6 m and in resistivity from 12 to 20 ohm·m, representing the chargeable overburden. This implies that the MEGATEMII system is able to see a small conductive body at more than 200 m depth in an area where the response is contaminated by conductive overburden."

2We use field measurements to quantify physical processes that accompany different types of mining explosions. The data sets collected include three-component ground motion, acoustic, video and high speed film, three dimensional topography, geological and geophysical properties, design blast pattern and timing, and velocity of detonation in the explosive for individual borehole detonation times. The explosions include simple single-fired contained explosions, ones designed to bulk and fracture material and those that cast material. Our goal is a physical understanding of these sources for the purposes of optimizing blasting practices.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) study in the Russian Exploration Area at the northern equatorial Mid Atlantic Ridge began after signing the contract with International Seabed Authority in 2012. In order to evaluate the SMS resources in the course of exploration the major and rare metals with economic value should be determined. The evaluation is based on geochemistry and mineralogy and particularly on the type of rare metals occurrence in the SMS. As a case study research of the Semyenov cluster of SMS deposits have been conducted.

The commercial extraction of metals from manganese nodules on an industrial scale requires more than 50% of the investment necessary to realize manganese nodule mining. This is mainly due to the fact that a completely new metallurgical processing scheme for the extraction of both base metals (Ni, Cu, Co) and high-tech metals (Mo, Li, Ga) has to be developed and upgraded to industrial scale. There are a number of conventional processing technologies that combine hydro- and pyro-metallurgical approaches such as the INCO and CUPRION processes which have been developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, new approaches based on selective leaching with chelating agents and bioleaching try to minimize energy consumption and waste production. All of these extraction methods require knowledge how the metals are structurally bound in the manganese oxides. In this contribution we will review the current knowledge about the mineralogy of iron and manganese minerals in the different marine oxide deposits, present our results, and discuss the possible consequences for metal extraction.

Diatomite deposits, the skeletal remains of tiny aquatic plants called diatoms, are found in many parts of the world. Only a few of these de- posits are of commercial value. Open pit mining is used in nearly all deposits now being worked. Processing methods range from simple drying, crushing, sizing and packaging to carefully controlled and highly sophisticated calcining and air classification procedures, employing the latest control and testing techniques. The major uses of processed diatomite are in filtration as filter aids and fillers and extenders.

Electrochemical, chemical, and image analysis techniques were utilized together with statistical analysis methods to determine the effect of various anode impurities on copper electrorefining performance. Results indicate that arsenic is a beneficial anode impurity. Anode lead and sulfur are shown to decrease electrorefining performance. Specific emphasis is given to the influence of individual elements on current efficiency, slime particle generation, and cell voltage parameters.
