"The Red Bluff porphyry is a tabular 2 km long north-west trending Early Jurassic quartz diorite to monzodiorite body that intrudes a folded Triassic greywacke sequence in the lskut River area, northwestern British Columbia. The porphyry is 500 m to 800 m northeast of the Snip orebody, which is a southwest-dipping shear-vein, termed the Twin zone that contains approximately 35 tonnes of gold.The intrusion associated with the mineralization is characterized by 0.3 cm to 4 cm phenocrysts of K-feldspar in a mediumgrained plagioclase porphyritic matrix. It is overprinted by pervasive sericite + quartz ± K-feldspar ± biotite (potassic) alteration characterized by intense stockworking of quartz veins containing magnetite--hematite bands. This assemblage is cut successively by quartz veins with minor iron-oxides and pyrite, and by younger pyrite veins with phyllic envelopes. The system is gold-rich but copper-poor, with typical grades between 0.25 g/t and 0.6 g/t Au, and 0.1% and 0.2% Cu. All styles of alteration and veining have similar abundances of these metals. Where southwest- and north-east dipping shear zones are developed in the porphyry, veins of all types are sheeted and foliation parallel. These sheeted zones are interpreted to be syntectonic. Asymmetric phenocrysts, folded veins and oblique foliations developed in the 130 haulageway of the Snip mine imply oblique normally-directed shear on the southwest-dipping foliation.The adjacent Twin zone is a high-grade auriferous shear-vein system that is internally banded with: (1) carbonate-chlorite-biotite veins, with textures indicating formation at least partially by wallrock replacement, and (2) dilatant quartz-sulphide veins. Veins commonly have potassic alteration envelopes that contain biotite ± calcite ± K-feldspar. The zone is highly deformed and schistose, with numerous kinematic indicators including shear bands, asymmetric folds, rotated porphyroclasts and oblique foliations that indicate a normally-directed shear sense which is parallel to that indicated by fabrics within the porphyry.Precious and base metal veins within 2 km or 3 km of the Red Bluff porphyry are zoned. Veins and shear-veins proximal to the intrusion, such as the Twin zone, are typically enriched in gold, copper and molybdenum, and have potassic alteration envelopes dominated by biotite. Distal veins usually contain relatively abundant zinc and lead and have sericitic alteration envelopes. Structures of both types have an Early Jurassic galena Pb-Pb isotope signature.The similarities in structural fabrics and alteration histories in both the Twin zone and the porphyry, the zoning of the vein systems in the area, and the apparently concordant Early Jurassic zircon U-Pb age from the porphyry and galena Pb-Pb dates from the Twin zone and surrounding vein systems suggest that intrusion, semi-brittle deformation and a large mineralizing hydrothermal system were closely related temporally and genetically."

THE following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which may stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. In as much as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a compressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Al- though these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. The value of raw nonfuel mineral materials production totaled an estimated $19.7 billion in 1978. The record 1978 value exceeded by 13 percent the 1977 value of $17.5 billion. This raw mineral output was the basis for approximately $200 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Output of both metals and nonmetals increased about $1 billion each, above comparable figures for 1977. Of the 22 metals produced quantitative output of 11 increased and the value of 13 increased. Among the 48 nonmetallic commodities produced, the quantities for 35 increased, and the values for 40 increased.

This paper gives a brief summary of the process of manufacture of sterling silver, and some of its more important physical properties, as observed in conlmercial production of rolled sheet and wire. Although papers have been published by Turner and Smith,1 Rose,2 Sperry3 and Jordaq4 there are few technical data available, and unfortunately the time allowed for the preparation of this paper has not been sufficient to make it as comprehensive as the title might indicate. Analysis of Steeling Silver Fine or pure silver is too soft for coinage and the manufacture of articles in which strength and resistance to wear are desired. From the earliest times of which we have record, copper has been the metal generally used to harden silver. Analyses of coins and silver articles from ancient tombs show varying amounts of copper, and old Roman silver objects in the British Museum have approximately the same ana,lysis as our sterling. The first authentic record of the establishment of a standard alloy is during the reign of Henry I1 in England. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the people in the Eastern Provinces of Germany had a reputation for the standard and purity of their silver coinage, and it is said that Henry II employed some of these Easterlings, as they were called, to improve and standardize the English coinage, which had become debased. NO DEPRECIATION/GAAPAll calculations and computations relating to the Royalty shall be carried out in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles consistently applied to the extent that such principles are not inconsistent with the provisions of this Schedule and the agreement attached hereto, it being specifically agreed that nothing herein contained shall permit, or be construed to permit, the Operator to deduct any amount for depletion, depreciation, amortization or any deduction that represents a non-cash outlay.Comment: In cases like net profit royalties where recoupment of prior expenditures is permitted, care should be taken to avoid any implication that depreciation may also be taken. It is only logical and equitable that Property Owners should not be permitted an apparent ability to “double dip” with respect to deductions. A provision like this example should accomplish the task. It will be noted that the example specifically contemplates that the negotiated arrangements will prevail over any requirements of GAAP. Accordingly, if the parties agree to an unusual formula for recoupment, it will not be set aside to accommodate GAAP requirements. Under GAAP, revenues and expenditures are accounted for on an accrual basis. In addition, it specifically prohibits the taking of non-cash deductions, which is in keeping with the concept of recoupment.Although in some ways the example states the obvious and could be considered redundant, its presence, especially in provisions contemplating recoupment, makes it clear to the financial people that there may well be some variations from normal practices dictated by GAAP, while at the same time confirming the availability of GAAP to fill any voids.The accounting profession often makes the caveat that application of GAAP is an “art”, not a “science”. GAAP do not provide a cure-all and can create problems that will have to be addressed. For example, GAAP contemplate that asset costs are to be reduced by investment tax credits, which can cause a problem for a payor with more than one mine."

At these works, the richest auriferous sulphhrets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chi¬cago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crude argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation. SINCE the "Days of Forty-nine" California has been the premier gold producing state of the union. The greatest production was recorded in 1.852, during which year the state's placer and lode deposits yielded over 81 millions. This peak was followed by a steady decline to about 12 millions during the years 1888 to 189.3, a period marked by the cessation of gravel mining. After 1893, production increased to a new peak of over 22 million in 1915, thereafter decreasing steadily to something over 13 million in 1923. Today; California's gold production shows a decrease of 84 per cent. as compared with the output of 1852, and a decrease of 41 per cent, as compared with 1915. It is not a difficult matter to find the causes of this more recent decline. In 1916 there began an upward swing in the cost of labor, which represents approximately 60 per cent. of the cost of mining, and in the price of supplies, representing the remaining, 40 per cent. This rise continued until 1922 and since that year there has been no decided tendency either upward or downward. The increase in the cost of mining since 1916 is variously estimated at from 50 to 75 per cent.; the price of gold has remained fixed at $20.67 per oz. This condition resulted in wiping out the profits of the low-grade operations which, in recent years, have constituted California's main source of supply of gold ore. It is now predicted that there will be renewed activity in California- gold mining. What are chances for the materialization of this forecast? A boom or even a revival of gold mining must of necessity be brought about or accompanied by one or more of the following factors: 1. A decrease in the cost of mining. 2. An increase in the price of gold. 3. New capital for development. 4. The discovery of new deposits. 5. The revival of hydraulic mining.

Abstract-The late Archean Pipestone Lake anorthosite complex (PLAC) is a 0.9 x 17 km sill-like layered intrusion that is part of a suite of coeval megacrystic anorthosite bodies in the Cross Lake region, northwestern Superior Province. Exploration for Ti-V-Fe oxide mineralization and concurrent geological investigations have contributed to a greater understanding of the lithostratigraphy of the PLAC and its oxide mineralization. Mapping and drill core studies have established a laterally continuous igneous stratigraphy comprising six leucogabbro/anorthosite zones and three melagabbro/gabbro zones. Field evidence, including disrupted blocks of layered units, scour contacts, and size-graded and modally-graded layering, suggests younging towards both the northern and the central parts of the complex. A decrease in the anorthite content of the feldspars from An75 in the south to An30 in the north suggests that the magmas become more evolved to the north. Macrorhythmic layering and gross morphological features suggest that the PLAC crystallized from four major influxes of geochemically similar basaltic magmas. The paucity of magmatic erosional features in the PLAC indicates that layering developed in a relatively static magma chamber, so that in-situ crystallization processes are required to account for the observed petrologic diversity. Drilling has confirmed that a significant Ti- V-Fe resource is contained in two of the four discrete mineralized subzones in the PLAC. Textural evidence and the stratiform nature of the oxide-enriched subzones are consistent with a magmatic origin for the oxide mineralization.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a four year (1985-1988) mineral assessment of the Juneau Mining District in southeast Alaska as part of its ongoing statewide mining district evaluation program. Following an extensive literature search, the Bureau investigated mines, prospects, and mineral occurrences in the area. This report describes the results of Bureau work in the Eagle River area of the Juneau gold belt; a component of the Juneau Mining District comprising 87,000 acres between the Mendenhall Glacier and Berners Bay. Gold and silver have been the only metals having significant production from the area and occur mainly in quartz stringer and fissure type veins hosted by phyllites, greenschists, greenstones, altered diorite dikes and quartz diorite gneiss. Gold also occurs in several small placer deposits. Approximately 21,100 oz of gold and nearly 9,000 oz of silver were produced over a 60 year period. Currently, the only mining activity consists of some exploration and minor placer gold production. Inferred and indicated lode gold resources having mineral development potential total approximately 796,000 tons with a weighted average grade of 0.22 oz/ton gold.

This report presents the results of a study examining the relationship between supervisor characteristics and performance in underground coal mines, The specific objectives of the research include; document tasks performed by first-line supervisors during a normal shift; explain why supervisors carry out their duties as they do: identify salient characteristics of effective first-line supervisors; and formulate criteria for selecting and developing candidate supervisors. To accomplish the study objectives, on-site observation and data collection was carried out at 13 underground mines in Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. One hundred thirty-eight first-line supervisors were observed during a full work-shift and discussions with the supervisors and the mine superintendent were held during the course of the visit. The observational data from the study provide a detailed description of what supervisors to during their shift. The report begins with an introduction discussing the problem being studied and objectives of the research. The literature related to supervisor selection is then reviewed. The following section describes the research design including data collection procedures and statistical methodology used in the study. The next sections present the analysis of mine, section, crew, and supervisor characteristics. The report concludes with a discussion of the results of the study and recommendations concerning supervisor selection and development.

What is the preferred electrolytic cell design and why? Hall: Considerable research remains to be done on electrolytic cell design. Studies are presently being conducted to determine optimum voltage and amperage. Zadra cells, which were used in some of the first carbon plants, are efficient when properly installed. Gold and silver are deposited on large-capacity, cylindrical steel wool cathodes. At times high value sludge falls from the cathode to the bottom of the cell. Rectangular cells, which were developed at some smaller operations in Nevada, require less floor space and have some desirable features in that cathodes can be moved and sludge can be removed from cell bottoms without actually shutting down the circuit. In South Africa two types of cells using graphite and diaphragm configurations are being tested. Duncan: The rectangular cell has one problem it's easy for shortcircuiting to occur. If you don't have a good seal on the side of the tank and on the bottom, the solution is going to want to flow around the bottom and sides of the cathodes and you're going to get poor performance in the cell. That is the advantage the Zadra cell has over the rectangular cell. With good sealing, which is a must, you should be able to get a ratio of the value of the solution going in to the value of the solution coming out of 10 to 1. Ken, can you tell me what you're attaining on the Zadra? Hall: At the Homestake gold operation in Lead, the cathode in the No. 1 electrowinning cell is loaded to about 600 ounces when it is moved to the refinery. At this time the No. 2 cathode is moved to the No. 1 cell. The No. 3 cathode is moved to the No. 2 cell and a cathode with new steel wool is placed in the No. 3 cell. In rectangular cells this sometimes is not possible because the loading on the cathode in the last cell may be as high as that in the No. 1 cell. As Don has pointed out this can probably be prevented by good seal design between cathodes. Potter: At the risk of sounding as though I'm straddling the fence, I really believe that either the round cell, as developed by Jack Zadra, or the rectangular cell will do an acceptable job. The Zadra is a fine unit. Leaks are not unknown but there are not very many. However, the rectangular cell is very saving of floor space. Plastics have been greatly improved during the past year or two and there is a very efficient design for the rectangular cell. It would have six cathodes in it and contain about 25 ft of steel wool. The body of this rectangular cell would be reinforced fiberglass plastic but with an integral lining of a high temperature plastic. I think either cell is so efficient and reliable that I would almost be tempted to flip a coin depending on floor space requirements. Either cell can be used to pull a loaded cathode and to advance the lesser loaded cathodes. Don, what is the configuration of your cell? Duncan: The Pinson rectangular cell has dimensions 2 ft wide, 30 in deep, and 10 ft long-long enough to take a dozen cathodes and anodes. We are currently using six of each but are not up to full capacity as yet. It's a steel tank coated with rubber. We have copper bus bars, which brings to mind that the last cathode in the tank, in one instance, was loaded heavier than the first one. That was probably a function of poor contact between cathodes and the bus bar. You can have erosion of the bus bar and if you don't get current flowing into the anode and out of the cathode, the cells will not function properly. Kappes: Just a few comments on cell design. In an alcohol stripping circuit we are running in Beatty„ NV, we are using PVC pipes for all circuitry piping and a commercial polypropylene electrolytic cell. They seem to be working quite nicely. The cell itself has eight cathodes measuring 18 in2. At six gallons per minute flow into the cell, at an average gold content of about 500 ppm, we seem to get good loading on the first three to four cathodes and not much on the end cathodes. At 12 gallons a minute flow we seem to be seeing gold uniformly along all eight cathodes. We are running at quite a high amperage level, about 400 amps into that cell. Gene McClelland, US Bureau of Mines, Reno Research Center (from the floor): I was associated with a company where the packing density of their steel wool cathodes was much too high and created some short-circuiting problems in their electrowinning circuit. I would like to ask the panel if they can recommend a packing density for cathodes in pounds of steel wool per cubic foot. Hall: The weight of steel wool put on one of our cathodes is 10 lb and the dimensions of the cathode are such that density would be about 0.75 lb/ft3. Duncan: I made a rough calculation and I'm estimating about 2 lb/ft3. Potter: In checking over a number of electrowinning operations, I found apparently very satisfactory operation within the limits that have been mentioned. I have come to a figure of about 0.5-1.0 lb of medium grade steel wool per cubic foot packed as uniformly as possible, of course. One consideration in packing is the fact that there should be good contact between the steel wool and the conductor. Operators tend to compact the steel wool more than would be desirable just to try to maintain good contact.

EVERY year it becomes more difficult to find new mining districts and new ore deposits. Nearly all of the important discoveries so far can be attributed to surface manifestations overlying the ore deposit. In the future greater skill will be necessary to find ore deposits that give little or no indication of their presence. Mining geology is making progress by broadening its attack upon mineralized regions, by including in its investigations studies of the relation of physical-chemical processes to ore precipitation and various phenomena that heretofore have not always been looked upon as major factors in the problems. Such, for example, are petrographic peculiarities that will help determine structure, aspects of strata or formations favorable or unfavorable to structural deformation or mineralization, and renewed studies of chert and dolomite. This broadening attack is not necessarily being directed to the study of large areas, but rather by doing extremely detailed work in three dimensions in relatively small critical areas to find the key to the structure, reasons for the manner of rock deformation, composition and texture of the rock, and other con¬trolling factors in the larger areas.

1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world's appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world's hunger' for the metal.

Mining and metallurgy have had a long history in China, and resources there have always been considered promising. Under the People's Republic of China (PRC), a remarkable industrial renaissance is underway that should further gain momentum in the years ahead. Rapid development of minerals have not only brought the PRC prominence in industrialization, but also in world affairs. Chinese mineral developments, especially petroleum, have been increasingly in the news. Oil and gas may have great potential, but a very large coal industry is already in existence. The steel industry ranks fifth or sixth in the world. The PRC is also prominent in fertilizer, cement, and salt production. The export metals are well known. Also, the country is buying heavily in nonferrous base metals. The need to know and the intense interest in the subject have prompted this study. The world significance of Chinese minerals is pointed out. The history of growth and PRC's mineral supply position are reviewed. Evaluations are made of policy considerations and regional and technical factors affecting mineral development. PRC's mineral trade and efforts to obtain equipment, supplies, and know-how are assessed. Specific reviews are made of major mineral sectors, including coal and power, oil and gas, iron and steel, nonferrous metals, industrial minerals, and fertilizers and chemicals. The overall outlook is summarized.

The occurrence of annealing twins in high-purity aluminum resulted in the formation of grain boundaries having orientation relationships which correspond to a high density of coincidence sites. The results provide support for the coincidence site model and indicate that large-angle coincidence boundaries have lower free energies than large-angle noncoincidence boundaries. Observations are presented concerning the coherent structure of twin interfaces in aluminum and the importance of inter-facial energy in preferred orientation. RECENT experiments1 have shown that when an annealing twin is formed during grain boundary migration in zone-refined lead, a large-angle random boundary is replaced at the growth front by a large-angle coincidence site boundary. The coincidence site orientation relationships obtained by twinning were of the type considered by Kronberg and Wilson,2 Frank,3 and Dunn.4 On the basis of the theory of annealing twins advanced by Fullman and Fisher,5 these observations indicate that the energy of a coincidence site boundary is less than the energy of a random boundary by an amount which exceeds the energy of the coherent twin boundary. This energy difference between the coincidence and random boundaries must be at least about 5 pct since the ratio of twin boundary energy to grain boundary energy in zone-refined lead is 0.05 * .014.6 Fullman7 has found that the twin boundary energy in aluminum is about 21 i 5 pct that of a large-angle grain boundary. A twin boundary energy as large as this would be expected to exclude the formation of many coincidence site grain boundaries, especially those which have a relatively low density of coin- cidence sites. Therefore, if the coincidence site model is a useful interpretation of certain large-angle boundaries, then it would be predicted that only coincidence boundaries which separate adjacent crystals with a relatively high density of coincidence sites may be obtained as a result of twinning in aluminum. The present experiments provided a means of testing this prediction since annealing twins occurred during the growth of recrystallized grains into striated, melt-grown single crystals of zone-refined aluminum. EXPERJMENTAL PROCEDURE A striated single crystal of zone-refined aluminum, about 1 cm sq and 37 cm in length, was obtained during zone melting of aluminum of 99.996 wt pct starting purity in a graphite boat under helium atmosphere.8 A molten zone of 2 to 3 cm in length, which was maintained by induction heating. was passed along the length of the bar for eleven passes at a rate of 0.9 mm per min. An additional final pass was given at a rate of 0.2 mm per min. The center portion of the zone-melted bar was characterized by an electrical resistivity ratio between room temperature and 4.2° K of 8000 to 9000. Single crystals of 1 to 2 cm in length were removed from the center section of the zone-refined bar and electrolytic ally polished in a 2:l solution of methyl alcohol and concentrated nitric acid. The specimens were then chemically polished in Alcoa R-5 solution. X-ray analysis of the single crystals indicated the presence of striations or lineage substructure having misorientations as high as 2 deg. New, recrystallized grains were introduced into each striated crystal by the technique of artificial nucleation and growth, previously described.9 During the growth of the recrystallized grains at 300' to 600°C in argon, it was sometimes found that a

Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data. Thunderbird is part of the Integrated Mining Systems (IMS) alliance. IMS offers the mining industry the most comprehensive line of monitoring and navigation products available today for mobile mine equipment. In addition to Thunderbird’s drill monitors and GPS systems, the product line includes: Fleet Management Systems for trucks and loaders; dragline and shovel monitors; GPS based navigation systems for shovels, dozers and other mobile equipment; and surveying systems. IMS uses common communication systems, operating systems, and hardware components in order to provide a truly Integrated Mining System.
