This paper describes a method of conducting rapid lateral loading tests of deep foundations in which the load is applied to the foundation with a time duration of less than one second. For purposes of this paper the loading is applied using a pyrotechnic loading system commonly referred to as Statnamic. However, the method should apply to any lateral loading system which produces a force time history with a loading duration of 20 msec to 1 second. The test provides a measure of the dynamic and static response of the soil/foundation system and must be evaluated as a dynamic loading. Interpretation of the test includes a simple single degree of freedom (SDOF) model which can account for the inertial effects of foundation mass, system damping, and static foundation stiffness. The results of the test measurements are compared with four case histories in which comparative static load test data are available, including pile group foundations and large diameter drilled shaft foundations.

"SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."

Most publicity about the copper industry nowadays is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and potential shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing technology. Copper differs from other widely traded commodities in that its real cost of production has progressively increased since World War 11. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other commodities is that increases in demand occur less automatically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other commodities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on circumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of producing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized nations like the U.S.; and consumer-oriented research and marketing by the copper producers.

"A number of coal mines in India are affected by fire. Most of coking coal reserves in the country are located in Jharia coalfield where more than 18 sq. km is in the grip of fire. Generally such fires are confined in areas near to our crops. About 37 million tonnes of coking coal are lost in recent yearsdue to fire and another 48 million tonnes are blocked in fire areas. Preventive measures adopted to control fires were only partially successful and the cost of such measures was exorbitant I Temperature of blast holes in fire area varies between 60 and 300° C or even more. Even after thorough quenching of holes with water, it become difficult to bring down the temperature below SO"" C. For blasting hot holes primary need is to select safe and suitable commercial explosives and detonating fuse and to measure hot hole temperatures. VWiOUs types of commercially available explosives including Nitro Glycerine bare, slurries, site mixed slurries (SMS), emulsion5 ,detonating fuses and detonators were tested to determine their thermal behaviour at elevated temperatures under field simulated conditions in the Copyright © 2000 International Society of Explosives Engineers 1993g - Studies on Safe Blasting Technique in Fire Area of Coal Mines laboratory and in hot blast holes in field . More than 50 round of blast were conducted in fire areas. NG base compositions and detonators were found unsafe at temperature above SO0 C andtherefore, they are not permitted to be used in hot holes. Slurries and emulsion are stable upto 1200 c. For blasting at temperature exceeding SO0 C a heat resistant gel/ solution was developed by the authors and is being used in number of fire areas."

Bastnasite is a natural fluocarbonate of the cerium group and affords an abundant and high-grade source of the lighter rare-earth elements. As part of a broad research program in rare-earth element technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines directed extensive experimental work to separating and purifying the rare-earth elements in bastnasite. By the use of a combination of techniques--classical chemical, ion exchange, and solvent extraction--the processing of a bastnasite concentrate to obtain the individual rare-earth elements, or groups of elements, was accomplished. A bastnasite concentrate, containing about 60 percent rare-earth oxides, was sulfated with concentrated sulfuric acid to eliminate the carbon dioxide, fluorine, and silica. Calcination at 1,200° F. made the gangue matter insoluble, thus permitting the separation of the soluble rare-earth sulfates. Essentially 100 percent of the rare-earth elements were recovered by this procedure. Since the rare-earth sulfate solution contained only trace amounts of nonrare-earth elements, subsequent separation procedures were simplified.

The Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering (SBS) Technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into a smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. One of the main elements in successful furnace operation is the control of gas flows inside the furnace, giving improved temperature distribution in the bed during the process. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) gives excellent opportunities for studying these phenomena. An investigation using CFD can be performed relatively fast. For example, implications of different configurations can be studied within a day and an optimum design chosen. Therefore, Outokumpu Technology has developed a Steel Belt Sintering Model (SBSM), which takes advantage of a commercial CFD code. Each main physicochemical event occurring in a steel belt sintering furnace is incorporated independently in the SBS model as a sub-model, enabling every event to be studied separately. The commercial CFD code solves mass, momentum, species and energy equations for determination of the gas flow, composition and temperature. In addition, the Outokumpu SBSM takes into account the moving pellet bed, drying of pellets interms of water content, coke combustion, oxidation and reduction of chromite and the decomposition of carbonates and silicates. During the development of the model, numerous laboratory-scale tests were performed. The sub-models were validated against the laboratory tests. The reliability of the Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering Model was validated against a pilot-scale batch-sintering furnace by comparing the modelling results against measurements. The aim of this paper is to give a brief presentation of the Outokumpu steel belt sintering model by showing some general modelling examples. Emphasis has been placed on demonstrating some of the main features of the model.

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the Sheep Creek prospect in the north-central Alaska Range to evaluate the Pb, Zn, Ag, and Sn resources. The studies included field investigations, mineralogical characterization, and concentration tests. Mineralization at Sheep Creek consists of disseminated, banded, and massive pyrite, sphalerite, and galena. Tin occurs as grains of cassiterite (Sn02) in the quartz-mica matrix and within pyrite and sphalerite grains, and Ag occurs in solid solution within the galena. Three bulk surface samples and two sets of core samples were collected at the Sheep Creek prospect for this study. Gravity concentration yielded products with up to 30 pct Sn, and the best result was a product that recovered 52 pct of the Sn at a grade of 22 pct Sn. Bulk sulfide flotation yielded products that recovered up to 89 pct of the Zn, 73 pct of the Pb, and 75 pct of the Ag, but grades were relatively low; selective flotation would significantly increase the grades.

The goal: At an industrial site, sever a well pipe containing an interior obstruction in a timely, cost effective manner by using a shape-charge to cut through the casing more than 50 meters below ground surface from the outside, doing so while inside a larger pipe, without damaging the larger pipe. The problem: Pumps and retrieval tools stuck nearly 50 meters below ground surface inside a 305 mm diameter by 9.5 mm wall thickness water well casing. The well, depth of 185 meters, had to be inspected for contaminates then properly decommissioned before industrial expansion could take place overhead. The limitations: A 508 mm diameter pipe had been driven around the 305 mm pipe to a depth of 63 meters. The usable internal diameter of the larger pipe was about 480 mm while the smaller pipe had buckled at one point forming a 350 mm wide spot. The charge thickness was limited to less than one-half the difference. Additionally, water that filled the annular space between the two pipes had to be displaced for the charge to work properly. The solution: Enlist the support of the shape-charge manufacturer to design, build and test a charge to work under the conditions present, then make it work in the field.

"Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. This extends to sample preparation too when reducing particle size and dividing the sample in the process.CITATION:Vogel, D A, 2017. This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications.

"A new apparatus has been devised for quickly and precisely analyzing natural gas for its helium content. The following outstanding advantages make it far superior to any equipment now available for the purpose.3/4/5/6/1. It enables more rapid determinations to be made.2. It has far greater sensitivity than previous apparatus. 3. It is portable.Fifty or more samples may be analyzed in an 8-hour day with the new apparatus and procedure. A maximum of about 10 samples per day could be analyzed with previous apparatus. In the apparatus described, the volume of pure helium obtained from a sample is determined by measuring the pressures created by that pure helium when it is expanded into a constant calibrated volume. In older methods the pure helium separated from a sample is pumped into a burette and measured at atmospheric pressure. The new apparatus and Procedure used with it reduce the average time for an analysis from about 40 minutes to less than 10 minutes,Samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium may be analyzed as readily as samples containing 1 percent or more, This was not possible with former apparatus. Duplicate samples containing a few thousandths of a percent helium have been analyzed, results checking to one ten-thousandth of a percent. Attempts to measure a corresponding volume of helium in a burette at atmospheric pressure become futile. The ability to determine very small quantities of helium has become of great importance recently in gas- and oil-field engineering studies such Os the utilization of helium as a tracer gas in following the movement of gases through underground structures.A complete apparatus was recently carried more than a thousand miles in a passenger automobile. It arrived without breakage, was .set up and ready to make an analysis in a few hours. .Former apparatus was not portable. The portability of the present apparatus permits taking the apparatus to the field for more efficient prosecution of field engineering problems. The only services required in the field are electricity, tap water, and a source of liquid air or liquid nitrogen.The principle involved is based upon the fact that large volumes of all the constituents usually found in natural gas, except helium, are adsorbed quantitatively on cocoanut charcoal that has been cooled to the temperatures of liquid air. A volume of sample is measured and transferred to a tube of cocoanut charcoal maintained at the temperature of liquid air. After adsorption of all the constituents other than helium, the charcoal tube is connected to a sensitive pressure-measuring device, and the Percentage helium originally in the sample is calculated from two pressure readings and the volume of the original sample."

"Key to successful innovation, whether at organization, industry or national level, is the alignment and utilization of resources in the most appropriate and efficient way. Innovation needs to be directed strategically, and it needs to be auditable in a systematic and integrated fashion. In the light of these considerations, this paper describes the construction and use of a topographical map of the innovation landscape of an organization. The purpose of the map is to provide a holistic view of the key factors that enable innovation (the so-called 'landmarks'), how well they are aligned to support a particular type/nature of innovation in the organization (e.g. radical vs. incremental innovation), and to identify possible gaps between actual and sought performance.The landscape covers four domains that influence innovation - the attributes of the individual, the organizational context in which he/she functions, the business environment (the market / industry in which the organization is operating) and the external environment. The significance (importance) and height (performance) of the landmarks in supporting and enabling innovation within the organization is determined by means of a self-appraisal audit. The topography of the landscape derived thus is subsequently interpreted in terms of the organization's particular innovation strategy and environmental context."

The common approach of designing blasts on a trial and error basis is quickly coming to an end. When utilizing the full scale blast environment, trial and error can quickly become cost prohibitive and leaves much to be desired in terms of true blast diagnostics. In these situations testing is usually only continued until a perceived improvement is achieved and when the gross undesirables in blast results are removed. This does not preclude, however, that further improvements of up to 100% or more can not be obtained.

X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of binary Mn-rich alloys with Ti revealed the presence of intermediate phases in this system. A binary R phase has been identified and also a phase having an a-Mn type structure. The X-ray pattern of the phase TiMn3 is presented and a tentative phase diagram for the Mn-rich portion of this binary system has been constndcted. MANGANESE-rich alloys with titanium have been subjected to thermal analysis at temperatures down to 1100°C by Hellawell and Hume-Rothery.1 Their results indicate the existence of an intermediate phase TiMn3 in this binary system. This phase appears to coexist with the Laves phase TiMn2, and with terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese, at least down to 1100°C. The above investigators did not attempt to determine the crystal structure of this phase, however. Since, by analogy to the binary systems Mn-V and Mn-Cr3 one might expect to find a phase in this region of the diagram, it seemed desirable to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys in the concentration range in question, in order to ascertain whether the sigma phase or related structures occur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese and iodide titanium in a water-cooled copper crucible under a helium atmosphere. Excess manganese was added to each melt in order to allow for losses incurred during melting. The alloys were then wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes for annealing at various temperatures, as shown in Table I, followed by quenching in cold water. Although the inside of the tubes showed evidence for some loss of manganese from the specimen during annealing, there was no evidence of any reaction between the specimen and either the molybdenum foil or the quartz tube at these temperatures. It was later found that the manganese loss was considerably reduced by annealing these alloys in sealed quartz tubes containing one atmosphere of purified argon. As an added precaution the surface of each specimen was ground off before crushing the alloys to -270 mesh powder, using a hardened steel mortar and pestle. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using either FeKa or CrKa radiation in an asymmetrical focusing camera, which gave excellent dispersion of the closely spaced lines. Pictures were also obtained using a Debye camera of 5-cm radius which provided data in the angular region not covered by the focusing camera. The alloy specimens were polished and examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 60 pct glycerine, 20 pct nitric acid, and 20 pct hydrofluoric acid. The 10-g buttons were in each case broken in half and found to be well-melted and free of any gross segregation. One half of certain alloy buttons was submitted to chemical analysis in the "as-cast" condition. No appreciable change in composition seemed to occur during annealing . Historically, miners have known that roof rocks originally composed largely of mud were prone to slaking and deterioration when exposed to water and humidity. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show that roof falls are more prevalent in summer and late fall. Field data shows higher bolt loads and increased room convergence in summer months. Laboratory data shows that very high internal pressures can be generated by significant strain in clay-rich rocks. In summer months humidities ranging from 70-100% can cause rock strains up to 7%, and rock pressures of 14,000 psi, more than enough to break apart weak shales and fireclays. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted wet/dry immersion cycling of clay-rich rocks. Results show that the rocks most prone to moisture deterioration are fireclays, claystones, and sandy shales, all of which have disrupted bedding. Of the 7 mudrocks with a weatherability index above 40%, none showed consistent fissile bedding. Black shales were surprisingly resistant to wet/dry water immersion cycling. Generally, mixed rocks (stackrock), typically susceptible to horizontal stress, are more resistant to moisture-deterioration. Mine roof rocks tested with moisture sensitivity ratings above 50% (moisture sensitivity index ranges from 0-100 with 100 being the most sensitive) all came from mines which had roof skin problems and used supplemental support to prevent rock fall injuries. Some roof rocks showed lateral variability of moisture sensitivity values, suggesting the need for more samples in highly varying roof rocks. Swelling strains of mudrocks showed that almost all of the swelling occurred in the first 24 hours after immersion. The wet/dry immersion cycling test used provides an accurate, quick and inexpensive method for estimating the moisture sensitivity of mudrocks. With this information mine operators can begin to anticipate hazardous ground and prepare appropriate roof support.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1975 only by Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry, Inc., near Clayton, N.J. Production and sales information are not available for publication. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was used by manufacturers as filter media in equipment for the removal of manganese, iron and other elements from water. The University of Delaware received a grant of $17,051 from the Bureau of Mines early in 1976 to continue its studies of the effectiveness of greensand in removing metallic contaminants from waste waters.

This paper describes the process typically involved with obtaining permits for quarry blasting in urban, suburban, and rural areas, including: content of SEPA (State Environmental Policy Act) driven documentation; regulatory review and comment; public interaction; public hearing(s); periodic regulatory review(s); negotiated solutions; monitoring; and the role of public interaction, demonstration(s), and education in the process. Case studies will be presented of projects undertaken in the State of Washington that illustrate the approach and regulatory interaction as well as the importance of public interaction throughout the process. Reference will be made to the role of national and state regulations and local codes and ordinances that provide additional limitations on blasting practice. The paper will also present regional blast monitoring data that are used in the permitting process and the layout and design of blast monitoring systems typically required as conditions of the quarrying permit. Our presentation will include tools, which we have developed to assist with explaining blast related phenomenon to both regulators and the public.

The drilling boom is the key component of a roof bolter, and it has significant impact on the performance, safety, and reliability of the overall working device. In this paper, the experimental modal parameters of a drilling boom at low frequencies are identified with the Laplace wavelet correlation filtering method. Based on the obtained experimental parameters, a finite element model of the drilling boom is revised using an optimization algorithm to improve its accuracy. The dynamics of the drilling boom are analyzed through its modal and harmonic response. As a result, an improvement for the drilling boom is proposed to fix the weak links and enhance the dynamic performance.
