A PC based computer model has been developed by the authors for predicting the surface subsidence due to underground coal mining. Its reliability, comprehensiveness and user friendliness demonstrate that it is a good tool for the mine operators, government agencies and scientific researchers alike.

This , the 11th annual report of research and technologic work conducted by the Bureau of Mines on coal and coal products , is issued following the closing of the Bureau's war work on fuels and contains references to most of the published articles containing results of war investigations . The few remaining papers will be discussed in next year's report . The trend in coal research in the Bureau of Mines was discussed in Mechaniza- tion . This publication , covering the period from the close of armed con- flict to resumption of normal coal -research activities , includes a section never previously presented . There is included for the first time a discussion of the Bureau's activities in the Liquid Fuels and Lubricants and the Solid Fuels Subcommittees of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee . This report does not replace the more comprehensive ones prepared by individual authors and listed as footnote references in this publication . purpose is to bring to the reader a résume of the work for the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1946. The material presented herein is based largely upon publications , but the results of some research and testing, which would not otherwise be published in the near future, are presented in detail .

The RockWorks EarthApps represent a free collection of 74 geology-related programs that read data from a built-in datasheet and create diagrams within Google Earth. EarthApps also includes programs that extract data from Google Earth. The programs that create diagrams include: point mapping (e.g. borehole locations), proportionally scaled icons (e.g. geochemistry), and strike & dip symbols. Line mapping utilities include; polylines, parabolas and pipelines. Polygon mapping programs include; thematic mapping (e.g. geology), mining claims, and public land survey sections. Image overlay capabilities include; draping (e.g. geologic maps) and time-based animations. Vertical image display capabilities are centered on either midpoints (e.g. drill-hole logs) or stretched between endpoints (e.g. cross-sections). The Flyover programs create virtual tours for site presentations. The cell-mapping includes a variety of algorithms (e.g. geochemical and geophysical contouring). Survey programs convert and export survey data to Google Earth as points and polygons. Programs that extract data from Google Earth include; points, lineations, polylines, and polygons. The RockWorks/EarthApps collection is developed by RockWare Incorporated based in Golden, Colorado.

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET?s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialised in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET?s program in mechanisation and automation for narrow vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies (Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. Specifically, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators? needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The main problems identified following meetings with mine operators are described with a few elements of solution and the Web site created for the broadcast of the results is presented.

By experience we know about the natural event of ocean-tides. In geophysics we say that the earth-tides phenomenon is the elastico-viscous response of the earth's body to the attraction potential of moon and sun. By the fact that the tides on the planet take place in a regular periodic frequency, due to the earth rotation of 24 houres for one cycle, the rotation of the moon in about 28 days around the earth and finally to the rotation of the earth-moon combination around the sun in 365 days this phenomenon is a very important one in geophysics. The exact calculation of the acting forces is possible and the comparison of the earth's body response to these forces as well.

Remote and isolated, located in a frigid, hostile environment, the Black Angel mine in Greenland had to create a warm social environment which would help attract and retain a stable work force of miners and support staff. The high cost of personnel turnover plagues many mines and, when the mine is inside the Arctic Circle, accessible by helicopters which are highly vulnerable to unpredictable weather conditions during the long, dark winters, the potential costs of personnel turnover become critical factors in the success or failure of the mining venture. Manpower planning should start from the date the engineers begin the technical design of the new mine. The plan should include provisions not only to ensure an adequate, skilled work force, but also to ensure a stable work force of people who are happy enough in the mining environment to want to remain, take their vacation and return to work at the mine. The skilled work force was assured with training courses of four months, designed to produce highly specialized underground workers from unskilled Danes and Greenlanders supported by trained Swedish and other Scandinavian miners. The stable social unit was assured by plans the primary attribute of which had to be flexibility. The accommodation changed from shared accommodation with communal washroom facilities to single accommodation with private washroom facilities. A recreational director was hired to help the workers make use of elaborate recreational facilities. A closed-circuit TV and radio system was installed to operate as a private broadcasting system using taped programs originally broadcast on European TV networks or developed by the mine personnel themselves. The liquor rules were changed and the mine manager became a licensed innkeeper responsible for the orderly operation of the Black Angel Bar in accordance with the Danish laws governing the services of a public bar. The result is a relatively stable work force. Some 35% of the people have more than two years' service with the company, Greenex A/S, and some 62% complete 10 months of service.

These annual reviews are guide's to the current work-and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published under the authorship of the individual investigators on specific problems in Bureau of Mines bulletins, technical papers, reports of investigations, and information circulars and in the technical press. The Annual Report of the Director of the Bureau of Mines to the Secretary of the Interior for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 1945, summarizes the year's work on coal as follows: Coal and Coal Products The United States maintained its No. 1 industrial position in supplying fuel for war and in preparing for peace through more complete mining, improved preparation and up-grading of coal for special uses, and better utilization of coal in industrial establishments and homes.

"The IsaMill™ was originally developed to address liberation issues at Mount Isa Mines (now Glencore) operations, McArthur River and Mount Isa in the early 1990s. Following on from the industrial success at those operations, the IsaMill™ was commercialised. In the year 2000, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) became the first external user of the technology with a 1.1 MW M3000 IsaMill™ installed to supplement the roaster capacity at its Gidji Processing Plant. The IsaMill™ was used to ultra-fine grind about 10 t/h of pyrite flotation concentrate to 10–12 µm prior to gold cyanide leaching. Based on the success of the Gidji installation, another was installed at the processing plant at KCGM’s Fimiston operation in 2002 in a similar duty.In 2014, a 3 MW M10 000 IsaMill™ was selected to replace the roasters at Gidji as part of the A$98 M emissions reduction project. The mill was commissioned in April 2015 at the design 30 t/h, allowing the immediate shutdown of the two roasters. Replacement of roasting with ultra-fine grinding completely eliminated air emissions at Gidji while maintaining overall plant production rates.This paper details the history of the IsaMill™ at KCGM from the original M3000 to the latest M10 000. Be if enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That deposits of coal, phosphate, sodium, oil, oil shale, or gas, and lands containing such deposits owned by the United States, including those in national forests, but excluding lands acquired under the Act known as the Appalachian Forest Act, approved March 1, 1911 (Thirty-sixth Statutes, page 9G1), and those in national parks, and in lands Withdrawn or reserved for military or naval uses or purposes, except as heroinafter provided, shall be subject to disposition in the form and manner provided by this Act to citizens of the United States, or to any association of such persons, or to any corporation organized under the laws of the United States, or of ;iny State or Territory thereof, and in the case of coal, oil, oil shale, or gas, to municipalities: Provided, That the United States reserves the right to extract helium from all gas produced from lands permitted, leased, or other- wise granted under the provisions of this Act, under such rules and regulations as shall be prescribed by the Secretary of the Interior: Provided further, That in the extraction of helium from gas produced from such lands, it shall be so extracted as to cause no substantial delay in the delivery of gas produced from the well to the purchaser thereof: And provided further, That citizens of another country, the laws, customs, or regulations of which, deny similar or like privileges to citizens or corporations of this country, shall not by stock ownership, stock holding, or stock control, own any interest in any lease acquired under the provisions of this Act.

"INTRODUCTION The Federal Explosives Act (55 Stat., 863), as amended, was passed by Congress on December 26, 1941, and became effective immediately; it amended the Act of October 6, 1917 (4o Stat., 385). The purpose of the Act was to regulate the manufacture, storage, use, and possession of explosives in order to prevent sabotage and to assure that explosives and ingredients would not fall into unauthorized hands. Under the provisions of the Act, the Director of the Bureau of Mines was authorized to administer its provisions under the supervisions of the Secretary of the Interior.EXPLOSIVES-CONTROL DIVISIONTo administer the Act, necessary personnel were employed in accordance with the appropriation made from a special presidential fund and later by Congress, and the Explosives Control Division was organized as a part of the Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Mines constituting the fourth division of that branch. A central office was established in Washington, D. C., and field offices were designated largely at the offices of the Health and Safety Branch throughout the country, and 50 explosives investigators were employed and assigned to work from these offices under the direction of the district engineers of the eight districts into which the United States is divided by the Health and Safety Branch. The territory assigned to each investigator was based on the approximate amount of explosives stored in that area; however, smaller territories were assigned to investigators stationed near the Pacific coast, which was indicated as critical by the armed forces."

One hundred thousand miles of flying over the North country without a single air casualty; much of it over virgin territory probably never before visited by white men; some of it over regions that abound with possibilities for minerals; all of it effective, for exploration and the establishment of bases and supply-stations, and for the carrying of men and their tools and provisions- this, briefly, is the record of Northern Aerial Minerals Exploration, Limited, a Canadian company organized Jess than nine months ago, which has been functioning, without interruption, during spring, summer, and now into winter. Our planes have ranged from the Alaskan boundary on the west to the Labrador coast on the east, and from the Transcontinental railway north to the Arctic circle. Our prospectors, carried on trips of hundreds, and occasionally thousands, of miles, have gone over large sections of country which were never before explored, and at the end of the prospecting season the Company finds itself in possession of several groups of important gold claims, which look most promising. In addition to this, we have been in contact with deposits of almost every known mineral.

A thermal plasma process was used to synthesize nanosized tungsten carbide -cobalt composite powder, in which ammonium paratungstate and cobalt oxide were reacted with a gas mixture containing CH4, H2 and Ar. The reduction and carburization of vaporized precursors produced nanosized tungsten carbide (WC1-x) - cobalt composite powder, which sometimes contained small amounts of W2C and/or W phase. The effects of gas composition, plasma torch power, and the flow rate of plasma gas on the product composition and grain size were investigated. The grain size of synthesized tungsten carbide powder was less than 20 nm. The synthesized composite powders were also subjected to a hydrogen heat treatment to fully carburize WC1-x, W2C, and W phases to the WC phase as well as to remove excess carbon in the product. Finally nanosized WC-Co composite powder of grain size less than 50 nm was obtained.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of a general investigation of mines and mineral deposits in the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc field, attention of the Bureau of Mines was first directed to the Coker mines area by the presence of large tonnages of old mill tailings containing economically recoverable percentages of lead and zinc. Later, the results of extensive geologic studies of the area were presented to the Bureau of Mines by the Federal Geological Survey, directing attention to the possibility of extending the known ore limits of the area to the north and northeast of the old Coker No. 1 mine workings.With this end in view, the Bureau of Mines undertook a program of churn drilling and sampling. This report describes the work done and presents the data obtained during the period of the Bureau of Mines investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The purpose of this study was to assess the various aspects of public safety related to the thousands of abandoned or inactive underground mines found throughout Western Colorado. Review of available published mine inventories yielded data on over 8,000 abandoned underground mines. A random sample of 200 mines was then selected for field visits representative of mining activity in Colorado. Inspections of the openings at two hundred abandoned underground mines were performed recording descriptive information regarding the opening, the mine site, the surrounding area, the primary opening hazard, secondary hazards related to structures or dumps, other openings to the same mi ne, available construction materials, possible safeguard methods, and any special observations such as apparent activity, previous closure attempts, environmental constraints on construction, and access problems. Of the 200 mines visited, twenty mine openings representative of varying geologic, environ-mental, access, and mining conditions were selected for detailed low-cost safeguard application. Description of these safeguards is presented in narrative, itemized labor-materials equipment tabulations, and illustrations. Research into the regulations of mine closure and safeguards was also undertaken to determine jurisdiction of public lands. Recommendations were suggested to improve the awareness and ability to continue this program into an implementation stage.

"Thirty years ago, the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) inaugurated a new era in coal pillar design. ALPS was the first empirical pillar design technique to consider the abutment loads that arise from full extraction, and the first to be calibrated using an extensive database of mining case histories. ALPS was followed by the Analysis of Retreat Mining Stability (ARMPS) and the Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS). These methods incorporated other innovations, including the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), the Mark-Bieniawski pillar strength formula, and the pressure arch loading model. They also built upon ever larger case history databases and employed more sophisticated statistical methods.Today, these empirical methods are used in nearly every underground coal mine in the US. However, the piecemeal manner in which these methods have evolved resulted in some weaknesses. For example, in certain situations, it may not be obvious which program is the best to use. Other times the results from the different programs are not entirely consistent with each other. The programs have also not been updated for several years, and some changes were necessary to keep pace with new developments in mining practice.The Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) now integrates all three of the older software packages into a single pillar design framework. ACPS also incorporates the latest research findings in the field of pillar design, including an expanded multiple seam case history data base and a new method to evaluate room and pillar panels containing multiple rows of pillars left in place during pillar recovery. ACPS also includes updated guidance and warnings for users and features upgraded help files and graphics.INTRODUCTIONPillar design is one of the fundamental elements of mining engineering. Pillars are necessary to control the great weight of the overburden during all phases of underground mining. Without stable pillars, ground control is impossible."

SINCE the inception of dredge mining, the attention of engineers and operators has been directed primarily toward mechanical improvements and refinements calculated to, reduce operating costs and to increase recoveries. The result has been to develop an efficient excavating and value-saving machine, which, in some instances, has an actual capacity of 15,000 cu yd. per day. Steel hulls and superstructures minimize the risk of destruction by fire and lengthen the life of the plant. Dredges now restore, to some extent, agricultural possibilities to mined ground. Large buckets, with correspondingly heavy parts, are able to handle heavy wash and massive boulders. Mechanical weaknesses have been strengthened. The use of manganese steel in bucket lines and tumblers permits the application too the bank of a digging force that can be withstood only by solid material, such as rock, cement or frozen ground. Various alloys of steel have been applied to certain duties and experiments in their heat treatment are still progressing. Haulage by tractor or truck is in common use. Discarded and worn steel parts are repaired or rebuilt by the use of the oxy-acetylene flame and the arc-welding machine. Gold and platinum saving is more efficient, although still subject to improvement. Dredging for tin ore is in successful operation. Crews are now highly specialized and experience has developed improved methods of work; particularly in the manipulation of dredges to build levees of tailings and to leave open waterways where desired. To sum up by the distribution of overhead expense over several units, ground under favorable conditions can now be dredge-mined for 5)2 c. per cu: yd., in spite of the increase in cost of supplies, power, and labor during, the past few years. Improvements in prospecting methods, however, have not kept pace with mechanical developments. Standard practices of ; testing ground today produce only wide approximations of values; although they obtain information concerning the character of the deposit and bedrock. It is interesting to note that few important changes in the methods of ten years ago are .to be recorded; the latest comparisons between pros¬pecting results and mined recoveries-have been at such variance as to cause confusion to the operator, and, in a degree, the sacrifice of the confidence of the capitalist. The present study was designed to explore the contribution of organizational climate and management practices to the injury experience in underground coal mines. A cross-lagged panel design was used in which miners from 22 mines completed questionnaires assessing 27 organizational climate, structure, and function dimensions on two occasions, The results strongly support the hypothesis that climate and management practice have casual effect on the incidence of disabling injuries.

"INTRODUCTION This report describes a method of horizontal drilling in an oil-producing formation underlying a 400-acre, approximately square plot of land in the Franklin Heavy oil field in Sugar Creek Township, Venango County, Pa. The method, which was developed on two previous projects in Ohio, 3/ consists of sinking a shaft to the bottom of a shallow oil sand and drilling holes in a general horizontal plane outward from the chamber in a pattern similar to that of the spokes of a wheel. The project was undertaken by the Venango Development Corporation in an attempt to find an efficient method of recovering oil from partly depleted sand formations.The Venango Development Corporation is composed of the following oil-producing and oil-refining companies and individuals: South Penn Oil Co., Forest Oil Corporation, Kendall Refining Co., Minard Run Oil Co., Quaker State Oil Refining Co., The Pennzoil Co., Alliance Oil Corpo¬ration, United Refining Co., Franklin Creek Refining Corporation, Canfield Oil Co., Pennsylvania Refining Co., Page Oil Co., Freedom Oil Co., D. W. and D. S. Grant, and J. P. Herrick, C. M. Davison and N. V. V. Franchot. Engineering features of the project were supervised by a committee off three engineers A. J. Saxe, chairman, W. M. Shoemaker, and C. N. Pfohl, who supervised the excavation of the shaft and the drilling of the first two holes by alternately spending a week at a. time at the project. The drilling method was under patent license from Leo Ranney, who served as technical advisor to the Venango Development Corporation; in addition, he furnished the design for the shaft and work chamber."

The thick alluvial sand and gravel deposits along the base of the San Gabriel mountain range in Southern California area have been mined for construction aggregates for over 100 years. Encroachment of high-density urban populations in this area has led to concentrated mining in a handful of open pit mines with single production faces reaching up to 55 m (175 ft) in height, and long transportation distances from the pit to the processing plant. Aggregate producers have responded to these challenges by developing innovative mining systems which enable low-cost, full-face mining of the alluvial material, and low cost delivery of this material to the plant.

Monazite sand is normally processed by, the caustic soda route to produce mixed rare earths chloride, thorium hydroxide and trisodium phosphate. Bulk of the mixed rare earths chloride is used for the preparation of FC catalysts. Recently some of the catalyst producers have shown preference to cerium depleted (lanthanum enriched) rare earths chloride rather than the natural rare earths chloride obtained from monazite. Therefore, a process for producing cerium depleted rare earths chloride, cerium p thorium and uranium from Rare earths + thorium hydroxide obtained by treating monazite based on stepwise hydrochloric acid extraction, was developed in our laboratory. The process involves drying of the mixed rare earths-thorium hydroxide cake obtained by monazite-caustic soda process followed by stepwise extraction of the dried cake with hydrochloric acid under specified conditions.
