Uranium may be in short supply due to the predicted energy needs in the coming years. As a result of this, a new surge of uranium exploration is underway accompanied by the refinement of numerous exploration techniques. One such technique is the monitoring of radon gas in surface soils and rocks as a guide to subsurface uranium deposits. The Colorado School of Mines Research Institute became involved in radon studies in 1967 on a project for the Atomic Energy Commission. Since that time the Institute has conducted numerous radon surveys for a large number of companies which have been active in uranium exploration. The objective of this paper is to relate the techniques utilized by the Research Institute and the results of some of the studies performed. Most of the studies performed by the Research Institute were related to roll front, sandstone-type uranium deposits. However, we have performed radon studies in various other types of rock. For those who may not be familiar with the application of radon "sniffing" in soils and rocks, a brief descriptive background should be given. The following question may be asked-why use radon as a guide to uranium mineralization? Some of the answers to this question are:

In the course of an investigation of lost circulation, a new tool has been developed which gives a qualitative measure of the relative velocity between the fluid column in the borehole and the tool. The position of a diaphragm in the side wall of the instrument depends on the flow through the device. This position is established by using the conductive borehole fluid in a potentiometric circuit. The instrument has high sensitivity and can detect changes in velocity as low as. 5 ft/min. Lost circulation mud additives do not interfere with the satisfactory performance of the tool. In a number of circulation losses of the pressure induced type, the instrument has shown that the losses were confined to extremely narrow zones (less than I ft), indicating that such ruptures occur in a more or less horizontal rather than vertical plane as has often been assumed. This pinpointing of the zone of loss is important in remedial procedures since it allows the treatment to be applied directly to the point of loss rather than to the entire open hole. The device can also be employed for indicating points of entry of water in producing wells. INTRODUCTION The need for an improved means of locating the positions of lost returns zones became evident during an investigation of lost circulation difficulties in the Gulf Coast area.1 With instrumentation available at the time, it had been learned that, contrary to common belief, the position of the thief zone responsible for a given loss seldom coincided with the point of bit penetration at the time the loss was encountered. In the majority of cases, the losses were found to be occurring at some distance removed from the bottom of the hole —sometimes as much as a few thousand feet. This information, along with other observations made during the investigation, led to improved techniques' for dealing with lost circulation problems. Highlighted, however, among the results of this work and of similar studies subsequently conducted in drilling operations in other parts of the country, was the indication that a considerable portion of the difficulty and expense involved in treating prolonged circulation losses is due to the unsystematic application of remedial measures to one or more apertures of unknown position. Basis of Tests It is worth considering that if the troublesome formation could somehow be transported to the surface where it could be directly observed, there would likely be little difficulty in readily effecting a seal. Although this is a decided oversimplification of the situation, it does appear that the chief obstacles to similar ease of handling of a lost circulation zone in a well are lack of visibility and of ready accessibility. The latter handicap is overcome to a considerable extent by placement techniques already in use, and other procedures now in the process of development are expected to offer further improvement. But in the matter of visual observation, the technique to be presently described appears to afford a quite satisfactory substitute.

Nearly 7 5 per cent of the total coke production in the United States in 1940 was consumed in blast furnaces. In 1939 the percentage was 69.9, and in 1938 it was 61.3. To produce a net ton of pig iron 1757 lb. of coke was required in 1940 and 1760 lb. in 1939. These figures indicate how dependent the production of pig iron is upon the production of coke. The rate of iron production is in some measure influenced by the physical and chemical characteristics of the coke. Blast-furnace operators believe that the physical properties of coke profoundly influence the operation of the furnace. Although it is true that coke of a wide variety of physical properties is used in American blast furnaces, the periodic fluctuation of these properties is one of the causes of irregularity of blast-furnace operation. The purpose of this paper is to present a broad picture of the physical properties of by-product coke that are generally considered to be important by coke-oven and blast-furnace operators. Effects of the kind of coal used, the preparation of the coal, the rate of coking, and other factors will be considered. Of all these variables, the kind of coal used is by far the most important. In this discussion use will be made of the method of coal classification by rank1 standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials. Although this method of classification has been an American standard for several years, it has not been given the attention it deserves, especially in connection with the selection of coal for production of coke. Despite the fact that many producers of blast-furnace coke are limited to some particular source or sources of coal, a good understanding of the principles involved in setting up the standard method of classification may lead to a better appreciation of the causes of changes in coke characteristics. Furthermore, where it is necessary to select new coals as a substitute for the original supply, this method of classification can be of great assistance. The data presented have been gathered from many sources, but no attempt has been made to cover the vast literature. Instead, some of the more important data have been selected to show how coals and their carbonization affect some of the physical properties of coke. It must be emphasized that generalizations concerning the behavior of coking coals are presented and that individual coals may vary widely from the specific behavior depicted. Nevertheless, it is believed that the data illustrate certain typical behaviors. Neither was it possible to cover completely all the factors involved; for example, the macroscopic constituents of coal are believed to have important effects on the physical properties of coke, but since there is little information available for such study, and since vitrain, clarain, and durain are neither

The problem of efficient reclamation of zinc base die cast scrap became interesting early in 1930. Die Cast Metal, as referred to in this paper, is a zinc base alloy with various proportions of aluminum, copper, magnesium, antimony and tin. Many attempts were made to work out some means of reclaiming the discarded die cast metal for re-use as new die cast metal. Difficulties in such reclamation were attributable to contamination by lead and tin from solder, chromium and nickel from electroplated coatings, and iron from iron inserts. This paper relates the experiments that led to the development of a specialized muffle furnace for the treatment of zinc base die cast scrap for the production of zinc oxide and zinc, and describes the development of the muffle furnace and the equipment now used commercially for these purposes. The Eagle-Picher Co. acquired all patent rights' for these developments from the International Smelting and Refining Co. in connection with their purchase of the East Chicago Plant. Zinc Base Serap Situation About 1935, the die cast scrap situation became increasingly acute for scrap dealers. This scrap was accumulating from dismantling automobiles and household appliances which contained die cast parts. Efforts to find an outlet for this type of scrap were intensified. The International Smelting and Refining Co. began to study the possibilities of a commercial process for the recovery of values from die cast scrap. At that time most of the die cast metal reclaimed was melted down in small kettles of from one to five tons capacity, the iron inserts being removed by skimming. The dross was skimmed off and disposed of as a zinc dross. The drossed metal was cast into slabs and was given the trade name "die cast slabs.". Distribution of the products produced by melting die cast scrap in kettles is shown in Table 1. American Process Experiments A method considered for the production of zinc oxide from die cast scrap was an adaption of the standard American Process of zinc oxide manufacture. Thus some die cast scrap was mixed with oxidized zinc materials and charged to Wetherill grates. The zinc oxidized to zinc oxide but, while the aluminum and copper largely remained in the residue, the color of the zinc oxide produced was impaired by copper contamination. As the proportion of die cast scrap was increased, liquation took place; that is, the metal trickled through the charge then solidified in the openings of the grates. French Process Experiments Several hundred tons of die cast scrap were purchased for test purposes and converted into die cast slabs. These slabs were charged into a French Process (horizontal retort) zinc oxide furnace with some electrolytic zinc. A satisfactory grade of zinc oxide was not produced. Distillation in Belgian Retorts It was then decided that, rather than attempt to use scrap die cast metal or scrap zinc for the production of zinc oxide, it would be advisable to redistill the die cast slab metal in a Belgian retort furnace. The opportunity to do so was provided by the closing of the zinc smelter of the Illinois Zinc Co. at Peru, Ill. Arrangements were made for the operation of a Belgian retort furnace for such redistillation purposes. The results of this experiment are summarized in Table 2.

In many oil fields a great variation in the production of adjoining wells has long been observed, and a certain proportion of dry holes, situated between prolific producers, has been regarded as normal without thorough investigation as to cause. Similarly, an occasional prolific producer has been found in a part of a field where all other holes have proven disappointing. Adjoining wells which showed an unreasonable difference in production have been surveyed, and the bottom of the poorest producer has been found to have lost sufficient vertical depth, through its drift, to diminish seriously its penetration in the oil zone. Again, the bottom of the good producer has been found to he more favorably situated by its migration up structure. Surveying of wells in California fields has shown many instances where the dry hole has drifted far off the structure to such a degree that no amount of deepening could ever convert it into an oil well. In other cases, edge wells have been found to drift into the field. At this time, in California, the surveying of oil wells is beginning to he accepted as a routine part of operating procedure. Some operators are surveying all of their new wells and, in some of the recently discovered fields, this practice is providing invaluable assistance in methodical development. The information that has been obtained from the surveying of many wells has convinced most operators that it pays to give careful attention to the drilling of wells. Chews are now usually cautioned to avoid reckless competition with each other. Whereas, formerly, certain companies demanded a large footage from their drillers, they now issue orders that a very moderate speed in drilling shall he maintained and that every care be taken to avoid practices likely to cause excessive deviation of the hole frorn vertical. As a result of these new instructions to drilling crews, a distinct decline in the average drift of the wells drilled by these operators has taken place and fewer dry holes are being drilled from good locations. Discussion of the paper of FRANK ALFRED FAHRENWALD, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 109, January, 1916, pp. 103 to 149. F. A. FAHRENWALD, Cleveland, Ohio (communication to the Secretary*).-Since the publication of my paper in the January Bulletin, (which was largely a metallographic treatise), I have been questioned regarding two points referred to therein. One of these is that which deals with the application I have made, p. 119, of the equation for melting pressures which correspond with different working temperatures. The other refers to the statement, p. 137, that "Prolonged heating at relatively low temperatures gave fewer and larger crystals and crystals of different sizes, while a flashing at higher temperatures gave a very fine and uniform crystalline structure, which was much' to be preferred." Especial emphasis was not placed upon either of these two factors, for each seemed perfectly logical and obvious. As they do not seem to be self-explanatory, I will supplement with those portions of my notes which were purposely omitted from the manuscript submitted for publication. A few practical illustrations may serve as evidence in support of the first of these, but it must be understood that in this work the "amorphous theory" is considered as being sound, and that it is assumed that metals allow of distortion, without fracture, by virtue of the formation of slip surfaces, accompanied by the transformation of crystalline material to the, amorphous phase. Effect of Pressure.-In all forging, rolling, and drawing operations, it is known that specimens of small cross-section may be worked at a lower temperature than can be used for the same material in much greater mass and sectional area. In -the larger pieces the maximum pressure is brought to bear upon the material near the surface, so that the interior is not subjected to great pressure, but to, a stress more nearly tensile, or shearing, so only the surface is subjected to the critical melting pressure. In the case of wires which draw hollow, the center is subjected to practically a tensile stress which breaks it, while the surface skin draws perfectly, due to the enormous "flowing" pressure exerted upon it by the surface of the draw-plate.

IN 1697 King William the Third granted unto his well-beloved subject Adolph Philipse, a certain tract of land, now known as Putnam County, N. Y. At the death of Adolph Philipse the land descended by inheritance to his nephew, Frederick Philipse. In 1751 his surviving three children partitioned the surface into nine parcels and divided them equally amongst themselves, but reserved the mineral rights which they held in common. Thus, at this early period in the history of the colonies, the existence of valuable deposits of iron-ores in Putnam County seems to have been a matter of common knowledge. Yet it is only within the last five years that the county has become a prominent, producer of iron-ore. Desultory mining had been carried on before that period at the Sump, Croft, arid Tilly Foster mines, but only a limited output was achieved, and few of our iron-masters suspected the existence of an abundance of good ores only forty miles from New York harbor. The accompanying map shows the location of those deposits of ore which are now generally known, and have been worked to considerable extent. Without doubt there are many more still awaiting the miner's pick, for no systematic exploration has ever been attempted within the borders of the county. Geologically, the occurrence of the ore is a counterpart of that of the New Jersey and Lake Champlain magnetites. The countryrock, and even the physical geography, are identical. Many small lakes dot the surface of the county. It is from these and their tributary springs and streams that the metropolis derives its farfamed Croton water. Abrupt hills divide the lakes and ponds. Some of the lakes, notably Lake Mahopac, are on the crest of hills, and are fed by subterraneous springs. The prominent mines of the county, in the order of their productiveness, are the Tilly Foster, Mahopac, Croton Magnetic, Sump, Croft, and Island mines. Of these, the first two are at present the only producers, and are quite exceptional in their nature. In fact they are the only ones of their kind in the Appalachian range, if not in the world.

The idea of economical production is usually associated with large operations, tonnages, and mines, with even larger capital behind them. , Nevertheless many small mines operate in the shadow of large competitors and make a good showing on the capital invested despite larger overhead expenses. For the purpose of this discussion I will divide the cost of production into classes, and specify opposite each the approximate percentagc expended thereon: 1. Labor, including miners and company men; 60 to 75 per cent. 2. Development, including all necessary .yardage, room turning, crosscuts, etc.; 7 to 12 per cent. 3. Deadwork, covering payment to miners for handling falls, draw-slate, or faults, rock work, water, and in general, all nonproductive labor; 3 to 7 per cent. 4. Supplies: mine timbers, oil, brattice material, lumber, cement, and repairs to equipment; 2 to 6 per cent. 5. Expense: management, selling, office, taxes, etc.; 1 to 5 per cent. 6. Depreciation of coal reserves and royalties; 6 to 10 per cent. 7. Depreciation of equipment and interest on capital invested; 1 to 3 per cent. 8. Fuel; ½ to 1½ per cent. The labor cost for a small mine is relatively much lower than for a large mine, particularly the sum paid to company men. Idle-pay expense is cut to a minimum; the labor item being larger than all the others together, a saving in labor makes a decided showing on the total cost. The development charges in small and large mines are about the same. There should be a small showing on the deadwork item in favor of the small mine. The unit cost for supplies is usually small in the small mine. The operator of the small mine finds, owing to a limited tonnage, that the expenses of management, selling, etc., are abnormally high. McLaUghlin, San Francisco, Ca1.—It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out in the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made. a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750" F, and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. William A. WillIams, San francisco, Ca1.—What metal did you use, Mr. McLaughlin? A. C. McLauGHILIN.—Ordinaly seamless tubing, extra strong. William A. Williams.—Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Bittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150" C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. Best, New York, N. Y.—What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? William A. Williams.—he fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

In all, 127 producing oil wells, 8 producing gas wells and 212 dry holes were drilled during 1936 in the Central Texas area; 76 wells in Bexar County, 62 in Caldwell County, 44 in Guadalupe County, 22 in Williamson County, 20 in Navarro County and 20 in Frio County. Less than 20 were drilled in each of the other counties and none at all in Ellis, Hill, Bosque, Coryell, Lampasas, Burnet, Llano, Kennedy, Mason, Real, Kinney and Uvalde Counties. The Pearsall-Austin chalk field in Frio County and the Zoboroski field in Guadalupe County were the only new discoveries and there were no important extensions to old fields. In this report Corsicana, Mildred (Elm Ridge), Angus-Edens-Hodge, Burke, and Rice-Oil Ridge, all shallow Navarro County stripper fields, are grouped together under the name of Corsicana. This grouping follows that of the Railroad Commission of Texas, thus facilitating the gathering of production data. A map showing the location of the oil and gas fields in the Central Texas Area was published in Volume 114 of the A.I.M.E. TranBactions, page 380. New Fields Pearsall-Austin Chalk.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation completed 13 Austin chalk wells during 1936 on the large Amerada-Rycade block in Frio County. Other companies drilled two dry holes to the Austin chalk in this vicinity. Not enough wells were drilled to give control of the structure but it appears to be a nose plunging in a west-southwest direction. A second deep test is being drilled in the Pearsall area and at this writing has cemented off a show of oil and gas in the Edwards limestone. The Humble Oil and Refining Co. is building a 6-in. pipe line from Lytle, Tex., to serve the Pearsall field. Zoboroski.—Actual discovery of the Zoboroski field was made by W. J. Walton et al. in 1931. The discovery well, Anton Zoboroski No. 1, was a small producer making but from 3 to 5 bbl. per day, which was used locally for fuel oil. The following notes may serve to bring before your Institute an idea of the iron-ore resources of Pictou County. Enough work has been done to permit an estimate to be formed of their quality and probable extent. As yet the systematic mining and smelting of ironore in Nora Scotia is confined to the operations of the Steel Company of Canada, in Colchester County. Although the locality I am about to describe appears, in many respects, well adapted to iron smelting, etc., no attempts have yet been made to begin work. Nora Scotian capital is more readily turned to lumbering, fishing, and shipping ventures; and such an investment appears equally foreign to the rest of the Dominion. I need not, however, go further into this part of the subject, and can only hope that my notes may prove serviceable as indicating a probable field for future development. The accompanying map shows the position of the harbor of Pictou relative to the coal and iron-ore fields, and to the railways which intersect them. The branch of the Intercolonial Railway, running from Truro to Pictou, forms the western boundary of the iron-ore district, which extends beyond the point where the New Glasgow and Cape Breton Railway crosses the French River. The iron-ore district may be roughly described as a triangle formed by the ore-outcrops and the two railways, the former making the base, and the latter the sides of the triangle, the apex resting on the coal-field at New Glasgow. The drainage of the country is toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence, through the Middle, East, Sutherland's, and French rivers; and the surface is undulatory, seldom exceeding two hundred feet above the sea-level, except in the district lying between Glengarry and the upper waters of the French and Sutherland's rivers, where a maximum height of about five hundred feet is reached at several points. Geologically speaking, the district embraces two divisions, the Carboniferous and the Silurian, the latter resting on strata provisionally considered to be of pre-Cambrian age. As no geological

INTRODUCTION TO MINERAL INVENTORY The first explanations to be made must answer the questions: What is a mineral inventory, and how is a mineral inventory different from an ore reserve? The term mineral inventory is a relatively new designation-born of the computer age and grown to common usage with the development of computer techniques for extending drill-hole sample values to regularly gridded data blocks representing in situ mineral values. The term has been generally accepted by geologists and engineers because it has a precise meaning which avoids many of the ambiguities of ore reserve. A mineral inventory is an estimated inventory of mineral in place and is usually achieved by dividing the deposit into regularly spaced gridded blocks to which are assigned estimated values using various extension techniques. A mineral inventory makes no presumptions about the mineability of the blocks or their cutoff grade. Such parameters are implied with the use of the term ore reserve. Ore has a specific definition (see Chapter 1) and ore reserve must reflect that definition and thus has economic and mining constraints. An ore reserve will be different under different economic and mining conditions and is subject to reclassification by many factors. The term mineral inventory avoids all such ambiguities. A mineral inventory estimate may be good or poor according to how much is known about the deposit, how extensively it has been sampled, and what techniques have been employed to assign estimated grade to the blocks. Such an inventory, however, does not change with time, economic conditions, or mining technology, but only with new and better data and methods. Thus, the mineral inventory is an excellent designation for describing mineral value distribution within a deposit's geological setting. The techniques for assigning values and tonnage to mineral blocks or panels are the subjects of this chapter. Whether a summation of the blocks be called a mineral inventory or mineral reserve is not important. Many conventional methods for computing reserves of minerals refer to the methods in terms of ore reserve calculations. OBJECTIVES OF MINERAL INVENTORY OR RESERVES Mineral inventories are computed for the purpose of determining the quantity, the quality or value, and the spatial distribution of potentially economic minerals within the earth. Such computations are made at all stages in the life of a mineral extraction process, from the early exploration phase to the final year in the life of a mine. To quote Popoff (1966, p. 2), "They are the most responsible and irreplaceable tasks in the valuation of a mineral deposit. Efficiency in extraction and productiveness is impossible without accurate reserve computations." The accuracy of estimate required for each of the three parameters of quantity, value, and location is dependent upon the objective for which the reserve estimate is being made. Again quoting Popoff (1966, p. 2): Reserves are computed to determine the extent of exploration and development; distribution of values; annual output; probable and possible productive life of the mine; method of extraction and plan design; improvements in extraction, treatment, and processing; and requirements for capital, equipment, labor, power, and materials. Steam permeability measurements have been made in the laboratory on several samples of natural reservoir materials. The steam temperatures and pressures were selected to simulate conditions which might exist in a reservoir during the injection of steam. For each sample tested, the experimental permeability to superheated steam was comparable to that measured with air and no evidence of plugging was detected. Some samples were exposed to water at various temperatures and plugging was found to occur in materials which contained significant quantities of monmorillonite clay. Temperature had little effect on the degree of plug-ning between 75 and 325 F. The measured pemeabilities tended to increase slightly with temperature, but the changes were small compared with the initial loss of per~neability on wetting. Sequential pemzeability measurements were made on two samples using air, water, steam, water and air, in that order. Both samples were water-sensitive and plugged extensively after the initial injection of water. Upon exposure to superheated steatm the samples dehydrated and their permenbilities to superheated steam were comparable to those initially measured with air. The remaining measuretnetzts with water and air confirmed that the water plugging was reversible and that the samples were not seriorrsly damaged during the tests. INTRODUCTION The swelling of water-sensitive clays during water floods has long been recognized as a potential source of reservoir damage. The recent extensive application of steam injection and stimulation has compounded this problem since both hot water and steam (as well as fresh water at reservoir temperatures) are, at sume time, in contact with the producing zone adjacent to the bore of a steam injection well. The purpose of this paper is to present data which compare the sensitivity of some natural sedimentary rock samples to water at various temperatures, and to super-heated steam. Some properties of montmorillonite clay are briefly reviewed, and comparisons are drawn between empirical data and the predicted behavior of the montmorillonite known to be present in the samples. PROPERTIES OF MONTMORILLONIT E CLAY Water initially adsorbs on dry N a -montmorillonite clay in discrete layers in the interlaminar space between clal platelets. The platelet spacing, which is 9.6 A (angstroms) for a dehydrated clay, has been observed to expand in discrete steps to 12.4, 15.5, 18.4 and 21.4 A spacings, indicating the formation of four discrete layers of regularly oriented water molecules.' The first two layers are easily formed by hydrating a dry sample to equilibrium in an atmosphere with carefully controlled humidity. The formation of the higher layers is more difficult. The usual X-ray diffraction patterns of the more highly hydrated samples indicate a gradual increase in the average spacing betwcen 15.5 and 19.2 A, followed by a discontinuous expansion to 31 A when the weight ratio of water to dry clay is between 0.5 and 1.2.' Platelet expansion above 31 A proceeds monotonically as the moisture is increased and no regular arrangement of the platelets ib observed. Water-sensitivity in sedimentary rocks is usually associated with Na-montmorillonite clay when it is in the noncrystal-line state. Mering3 found that the average lattice spacing of sodium montmorillonite hydrated at 68 F and 70 per cent relative humidity was 15.5 A, and that the spacing, at 92 per cent humidity was 16.5 A. The water adsorbed at the higher humidity has the same free energy as liquid water at 65.6 F. Kolaian and Low' used a tensiometer to measure the thermodynamic properties of water in diffuse suspensions of montmorillonite clays relative to pure water. They observed that water in suspensions as dilute as 6 per cent clay became partially oriented when left undisturbed. The bonding associated with this orientation was not extensive because the free energy difference between the water in suspension and pure water was only a few millicalories per mole. They also found that the measured free energy difference decreased rapidly with temperature and became negligible above 100 F. This evidence indicates that montmorillonites contained in sedimentary rocks would dehydrate to a crystalline structure when exposed to superheated steam, and that the rock permeability measured with steam would be equivalent to that measured with air. The effect of elevated temperatures on the swelline of montmorillonite clays in aqueous suspensions has not been investigated.
