To prove this, I need quote only two of his assertions, the italics being mine: "lt is a stern fundamental principle that a11 natural resources are the inalienable property of the crown.'' "The right to a claim should only exist as long as it is worked or taxed to insure work. Once depart from that sound maxim, there results improper control of the natural resources of the country, which primarily belong to the people." These assertions formed the basis of my criticism1 of Dr. Raymond's paper in 1913, and they should be inscribed in letters of gold above the entrance to the office of every county recorder in the United States. I venture to assert that the existing United States mineral land laws are essentially unfair to the nation and a hindrance to the legitimate miner, because they fail to embody the above quoted principlca; and this applies both to state laws east of the Mississippi and to federal laws in the West. That these laws favor the forestaller and the monopolist, defraud the government of its fair share of the profits of mineral production, and tend to industrial feudalism must be evident to any competent unbiassed observer. The fact that no serious political movement arose to change them, until the conservation agitation of the last decade, may be largely explained by two salient conditions. First, as stated by President Winchell, "for a long time there was such a vast surplus, or excessive amount of unwanted, undesirable land in the West that the land offices did not scrutinize the claim sought to be located;" second, that the millions of individual farm owners throughout the country could easily be aroused, by the special pleaders hired by the great land speculators and monopolists, to use their vast political power for the suppression of any statesmen striving to incorporate in our semi-feudal land laws any such principles as those quoted from Mr. Godson. While agreeing with Mr. Godson that a freehold or fee-simple title, if coupled with obligatory continuous work, may have the same practical effect as a lease, it seems to be the experience of the most active and

ALTHOUGH a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes.

In their recent complete review of the subject of age-hardening,' R. F. Mehl and L. K. Jetter classify the main types of precipitation-hardening alloys under two headings, depending upon the nature of the precipitate and the character of the precipitation. In the alloys falling under the first heading, which display "continuous precipitation" and are typified by the aluminum-copper alloys, "precipitation seems to occur without much regard to grain boundaries and apparently at much the same rate at every point," although an acceleration in regions plastically deformed has definitely been established.2 In the second type of alloys the precipitation is "discontinuous," as in the copper-silver system for example, and "seems to start in restricted regions, primarily those contiguous with the grain boundaries, and to spread inward in an advancing wave." The reasons for the occurrence of these two greatly different types of precipitation are unknown, as are those for many other reactions that take place in the solid state. In the present paper only the first or "continuous" type of precipitation will be dealt with, for which a complete crystallographic mechanism has been worked out for the process of precipitation from a supersaturated solid solution of copper in aluminum. Based upon this mechanism, an explanation of the various property changes found experimentally will be developed in the second paper of this series. In later papers ('discontinuous precipitation" in copper-silver alloys will be explained, and an effort will be made to rationalize the two processes and types of precipitation. Kolar Gold Fields are one of the best known gold deposits in South India where gold occurs in quartz reefs in Archaean hornblende schists and shows large variation in grade. The history of mining goes back to 18th century. The workings at Nundydroog Mines, chosen for Operations Research studies, have entered a depth of 2150 meters. The gold values in these mines were thought to be erratically distributed. However, by using 10540 samples from 49 blocks of ore, it is established that the gold value properties in inch- pennyweight units follow a two parameter log-normal distribution. Emperical relationships between arithmetic means and estimates based on peripheral and internal block values have been worked out using the estimator suggested by Krige (1951) instead of 't' estimator suggested by Sichel (1952). These relations can be used in arriving at block estimates with respective standard errors. There is no significant emperical relationship between depth and the grade of ore.

The treatment of the residues from the manufacture of sulphuric acid which contain small amounts of copper, silver and gold, has attracted considerable attention in Europe. They are successfully treated in several works on the continent, and in as many as twenty establishments in different parts of England. As the process must sooner or later attract attention in this country, I have put together my notes made in three of the most important establishments in Europe. These are the works at Hemixem near Antwerp, of Duisbourg in Westphalia, and of Oker in the Hartz. In the last works only, the ores are produced in the vicinity of the place where they are treated. The works at Duisbourg treat ores which come from the Rio Tinto mines in Spain, which often contain considerable quantities of arsenic. They are roasted in a number of different works along the Rhine for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. They are brought by boat and are landed at the works by steam-cranes. They are carried at once by a double-inclined plane worked by steam to the storagehouses to be kept, until treated. The wagons, after being weighed, are dumped. The ore is assayed at once, the assay-sample being taken from the boat while the ores are being discharged. They are all fine, and contain two to eight per cent. of copper and about sixty per cent. of iron, and a small amount of silver and gold. Their average composition is given below:

WEBSTER, Philadelphia, Pa.:-I would like to call ,attention to the fact that the results of the ordinary tension and bend tests do not always give us the information we want even if we figure out the amount of work done. You want a bending test of sufficient width and full thickness. In the case of eyebars, for instance, I have had experience with a 10- by 1-in. eyebar which gave perfectly good results in a full-size test of the finished bar. The 10- by 1.5-in. and 10- by 1.75-in. eyebars from the same heats-of steel were absolutely worthless in full-size tests. The narrow bending tests from all these bars gave good results. Bat after going into the matter fully, we found that if pieces about 3 in. wide and full thickness were used for the. cold bending tests, the heavier material would not stand this test, but failed. That is, in order to check the quality of the rolled bar you should have a wide piece of full thickness for cold bending, as the narrow pieces give misleading results. J. E. Y. :-I would like to ask if there have been any tests made to compare the results of Charpy tests with the true dynamic test similar .to the Wohler test, except that the piece is subjected to a tensile or compressive stress and to alternating stresses in addition, at the same time. This seems to me to approach more nearly than any other test to the conditions of actual service. where the piece is under a fixed initial stress plus a highly variable and often alternating stress. Some tests were made on this plan in England within a year or two. The test piece was Subjected to either a tensile or compressive stress of known amount and simultaneously to alternating stresses in addition. Such a. test as this gives information which we cannot get by a tensile test or even from the tensile strength multiplied by an. elongation. Such tests, however, are exceedingly tedious and require long periods of time in order to obtain valuable results. If material could be subjected to these dynamic tests and the same material to the. Charpy shock test, and if some reasonable qualitative relation could be established between the results of the two tests, then we could assume that the shock test, which is so simple and easy to make, was a measurably accurate test of the dynamic qualities of the material. Since the earliest years of recorded history the durability and protective qualities of asphalt and tar have been known and utilized. The mummies of early Egyptian kings were coated with asphaltic materials, and asphalt mastics were common in Babylon. However, according to various authorities, it was not until 1780 that the first forerunner of present-day composition roofing was discovered,l and the large-scale expansion of the industry has taken place since 1900. Historical Background Development was stimulated by the growing popularity of manufactured gas. The by-product tars from these operations accumulated in large waste piles that had no commercial value and were a source of annoyance and expense to the gas companies. These tars were offered at very attractive terms to anyone who would take them away, and the infant "composition" roofing industry benefited accordingly. At first the process consisted simply of dipping sheets of burlap or other fabric in a tank of molten tar or asphalt. The long strip of roofing was rolled up for convenient handling, and the early experimenters soon found that it was necessary to dust the surface of their new "roll roofing" with some kind of material that would prevent the tarred surfaces from sticking together. Any finely divided, low- priced local material like sand or fine gravel served this purpose and from its application the roofing-granule industry grew. As time went on other characteristics of a properly applied mineral surfacing were recognized. As with wooden shingles, tar and asphalt can be ignited by flying embers from near-by fires. It was found that by increasing the largest particle size to the maximum that could be successfully embedded, and by properly controlling the amount of smaller fractions retained in the grade so as to cover the asphalt completely a high degree of resistance to fire was attained. Needless to say, in this early period asphaltic roofing needed such selling points to gain acceptance in a field dominated by wood, slate, and tile. When asphalt is protected from the sun's rays it is extremely durable, but when exposed to sunlight its surface is comparatively rapidly decomposed. Completely covering asphalt roofing with mineral surfacing protects the asphalt and adds materially to the life of the roof—conservatively, 500 per cent. Slate Graftules In the production of split slate shingles a large quantity of waste slate is accumulated, as 60 to go per cent of the rock quarried is discarded. This waste was a continuing burden on the industry. Some was marketed as ground slate flour for filler in paint and linoleum, and there is a record that as early as 1906 two carloads of coarse screenings from slate flour were marketed as granules for surfacing roofing. MINING geology has a threefold objective: to guide prospecting for new ore, to evaluate known orebodies as development risks, and to supply the detailed knowledge of ore structures necessary for more economical extraction. The role of geology in exploration is well established. This article will deal solely with orebody evaluation and the application of geology to development and mining problems as practiced by St. Joseph Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri district, which for many years has supplied approximately 30 pct of U. S. lead production. The primary concern of the present discussion is geology in the district, not geology of the district. The southeast Missouri district, locally called the Lead Belt, includes parts of St. Francois, Madison, and Washington counties. The first recorded mining was about 1720 at Mine La Motte in Madison County on surface showings of lead ore. Later discoveries near Bonne Terre, twenty-five miles to the north, led to extensive prospecting and underground mining. To date the district has yielded well over 8 million tons of pig lead, valued at more than $1 billion. By far the greater part of the lead production has come from an area of 50 sq miles, centering on the city of Flat River, as shown in Fig. 1. Role of Geology in Metal Mining The history of the use of geology in the older metal mining districts follows a simple consistent pattern that may be considered in terms of four distinct phases. Each geologic phase is a response to the economic status of the mining district; each has definite characteristics setting it apart from other phases; and each passes into the succeeding phase as the mining operation gradually exhausts the large, rich, easily discovered deposits and lives upon increasingly smaller, lower grade orebodies that are less easily found. The geologic phases and their major characteristics are as follows: Period of No Organized Geologic Program: During the early history of a great metal district ore is easily found by random prospecting and wildcat drilling. Many small operators are active, as profitable mining can be done with a relatively small capital outlay and a minimum of technical staff. Mining practice consists largely of sinking a shaft on an ore showing and following the ore in sight. When the ore is exhausted or becomes unprofitable to mine, the process is repeated on a new ore showing. The miners become familiar with certain ore habits and use this practical geologic knowledge to guide mining. The method is successful as long as large tracts of virgin mineralized area are available. This phase ends when small-scale mining methods are no longer profitable and the mines become consolidated into the hands of a few operators.

The wizardry of nucleonics has added new and greater dimensions to the almost inseparable "twins"-zirconium and hafnium. So close is their relationship that neither element is found free of the other in any presently known mineral. Although zirconium in the form of its oxide was discovered in 1789 by Klaproth, the metal in an impure, nonductile form was not isolated until 1824 by Berzelius. About 100 years later -1925-van Arkel and deBoer developed and patented a technique for the deposition in vacuo of crystalline, coherent, highly ductile metal of extreme purity on an electrically heated filament through the dissociation of gaseous zirconium tetraiodide. Within the past five years both zirconium and hafnium have been dramatized by the press and in popular science magazines. This has led to the false assumption that practically all of the world consumption of zirconium ores is used in the production of the metals. Recent statistics on the subject show that not over 15 pct of the zirconium ore consumed in 1958 went to ferrosilicon zirconium and zirconium metal. The rest was consumed in refractories, foundry sand and facings and ceramics. The importance of zirconium as a component in compact, relatively lightweight nuclear energy units, such as those now used in the submarine Nautilus,6 is well established. A rival of zirconium metal as a casing for atomic fuels is a newly developed ceramic body. It is claimed to be cheaper than zirconium-to withstand higher temperatures-and to be more resistant to corrosion. Whether such ceramic casings have the required low thermal neutron absorption cross section, high strength and easy formability of zirconium is yet to be demonstrated. Hafnium, because of its low order of abundance and its close chemical relationship to zirconium, was not definitely recognized as a new element until around 1923, despite prior claims. A study of the X-ray spectra of zirconium led to its identification. The circumstances leading to the discovery of hafnium were much less fortuitous than those surrounding zirconium. The more precise tools of arc and X-ray spectrometry lent themselves admirably to the search for elements to fill certain gaps in the periodic table. [ ] Pure, ductile hafnium-a metal similar in appearance to stainless steel-has a specific gravity of 13.3 (zirconium 6.52) and a melting point of 2,200°C. In other respects it closely resembles zirconium except in one important respect which gives it a preeminent position in nuclear energy development, namely, a high thermal-neutron absorption cross section. This explains the necessity of hafnium-free zirconium in atomic piles. The ability of hafnium to capture thermal neutrons makes it an excellent "moderator" of "governor" when used as control rods in nuclear reactors (Table 1).

THE native methods of mining and milling gold-ores in Korea may not present any specially new features, but are chiefly interesting as primitive practices, still followed at the present day. In mining where the rock is hard, wood is piled up near the face of the tunnel or drift and then set on fire. The fire bums for twenty-four hours, after which, three or four days are given for the rocks to cool, before the miners go in and extract the loosened material. The only tools in use are a hammer, a steel gad about five inches long, and a flat spoon-shaped basket. The pay-streak or chute is closely followed, and in places the workings are very small and intricate. Rock not yielding more than $6 per ton is not extracted. The manner of opening a mine is to begin on the outcrop, where the rock pays, sink a shaft or run a tunnel on the vein, and follow the pay-streak and more easily worked ore. When this is exhausted, or the influx of water interferes, the opening is abandoned and operations are begun again at a new spot on the outcrop. The place usually selected is as high up on the mountain as possible, and in no instance is advantage taken of the topography by running a cross-tunnel to tap the vein. The ore is brought in baskets to the surface, and there placed in sacks, holding about 150 1bs. each, and taken to be crushed. The rock is first crushed between two stones, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper stone is oval and rounded on the bottom, so that it can be readily rocked on the under stone. Two pieces of wood, used for handles, are placed, one on each side, in grooves in the upper stone, and held in position by means of straw rope. The lower stone is not smooth on top, but exhibits three elevations running lengthwise, with shallow depressions between them. The middle elevation acts as a fulcrum on which the upper stone may be rocked. From two to ten men, according to the weight and size of the stone used, are employed in rocking. With four men, from 300 to 350 lbs. of rock can be crushed per day, the stone making 50 complete oscillations per minute. The men squat on each side of the stone and move it to and fro by means of the wooden handles. The ore is fed, in pieces up to the size of an egg or even larger, by one of the men. While coal was undoubtedly seen by the Spanish explorers in Texas, no mention can be found of it in any of their available published records; it was likely noticed by the first Americans, and coal along the Rio Grande River was reported in 1834.1 The next record is that of brown coal in Bastrop County in 1837 by James Nicholson and Judge Pinckney Hill? Dr. Riddell saw brown coal along the Trinity River in 1839 and described it as follows: "In the banks of the Trinity, associated with the iron ore, and overlying the brown coal, whole trees and fragments of trees, piled sometimes one upon another, present themselves completely transformed into stone. In some logs a diversified metamorphosis is observable; one portion of the vegetable structure having been replaced with silex, another with brown oxide of iron, and a third is bitumenized or converted into coal. "In concern with Dr. F. B. Page, I took considerable pains in the exploration of the Trinity brown coal formation., As no excavations for working have yet been made, the best places for inspecting the formation are where the Trinity cuts its way through the highlands, or where its banks present themselves in bold high bluffs, as at New Cincinnati, and near the site of the projected town of Osceola. The coal lies in horizontal strata, dipping one foot in thirty to the northwest. The main stratum at the latter place, just above Bedias creek; is represented by the concurrent statement of W. C. Brookfield, surveyor, Mr. James S. Hunter, of Huntsville, Texas, Dr. Page, and some other persons whom I consulted, as between six and seven feet in thickness, the lower portion being between three and four feet above low water mark. Unfortunately, during my sojourn there, the river was unusually high and turbid for the season of year; I could not consequently verify the same by personal observation and measurements. The most considerable coal beds which I had opportunity fully to inspect, were in the Trinity bluffs, southwest side, at New Cincinnati, six miles lower down, and just below the mouth of Salt creek, near six miles above. The workable stratum of brown coal in each of these localities is about five feet thick, and situated some fifteen feet or so above low water mark. In quality it is said to be precisely similar to the coal in the seven feet bed."2 . me thermodynamic properties of the components in the Cu-Ni-S ternary system have been studied by measuring the H2S/H2 ratios in a gas phase equilibrated with the molten matte at 1200°C. The measured sulficr potentials have been extended by extrapolation and combtned with previously published data to permit the thermodynamic analysis of the ternary system by integration techniques. A simplifying assumption of ideality in the Ni3Sz-CuS pseudobinary has been made. SINCE copper and nickel metals were first extracted from their sulfide ores the interaction between the two metals and sulfur has been of industrial and theoretical interest. The processes developed to extract copper and nickel have been reported periodically in the literature. The theoretical studies on the Cu-Ni-S ternary have been restricted to problems directly associated with production. It is only within recent years that the binary systems related to this ternary have been analyzed thermodynamically and mathematical devices developed to permit a corresponding treatment of the ternary system. In 1910 an investigation of the role of nickel in Cu-Ni-Fe-S mattes was reported,' It was concluded from this work that nickel is not an element replacing iron in mattes, but rather that Cu-Ni alloys behave as a single metal during the matte converting operation. The laws which govern the converting of Cu-Ni alloys were found to be the same laws as those that govern the conventional converting of copper alone. Although considerable information has been reported on the theoretical aspects of copper smelting, little data is available on the smelting of Cu-Ni ores except for phase diagrams and process descriptions. The available information on the Cu-Fe-S ternary and related systems prior to 1953 has been summarized by Ruddle.2 Since Ruddle's publication, Rosenqvist and coworkers have completed phase equilibria investigations of the Fe-S, Co-S, and Ni-S binaries,3 the Fe-S-O ternary,4 and the Cu-Fe-S-O quaternary.4 An extensive investigation of the Cu-Fe-S ternary system at smelting temperatures has been made by Krivsky and Schuhmann.5 At these temperatures, the Cu-Fe-S system is very similar to the Cu-Ni-S ternary with respect to the location of the single-phase and two-phase liquid matte regions. In the former, however, the area of immiscibility is more extensive and the region of liquid matte-liquid metal-solid metal equilibria is much more extensive. Krivsky and Schumann observed that the Cu2S-FeS pseudobinary system is, for practical purposes, an ideal mixture. This investigation has served as a valuable guide in analyzing the Cu-Ni-S ternary. EXPERIMENTAL The experimental procedure employed in this investigation was the conventional technique of equilibration of the sulfide matte with gaseous mixtures of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide at 1200°C. The thermodynamic properties of sulfur (S2) in the gas phase are determined by means of Eq. [I] and the activity of sulfur in the matte by Eq. [2].

DESPITE the fact that a combination of metals-aluminum-zinc-tin, and sometimes aluminum-zinc-cadmium-is extensively used for aluminum solders, as well as for die-castings, the constitution of these alloys has not yet been made clear. I. BINARY SYSTEMS The system aluminum-zinc is the basis of the ternary alloys under consideration. Their composition was made sufficiently clear by the investigations of Rosenhain and Archbutt,1 Bauer and Vogel,2 Sander and Meissner,3 Hanson and Gayler4 and Isihara.5 Only the temperature of decomposition of the crystals 0 seems still to be doubtful, whether it is considered as a compound of Al2Zn3 (according to Bauer and Vogel) or as an intermediate phase of variant composition (according to Hanson and Gayler). This temperature is given by most of the authors as in the neighborhood of 256° C., only Isihara giving 280° C. As its accurate determination is of special importance in the study of the ternary alloys under consideration it was experimentally controlled in the following manner: An alloy corresponding in composition to the formula Al2Zn3 was made, in which the temperature effect was found to be the greatest. This was drilled and a silver-constantan thermoelement inserted into the cavity so as to be in direct contact with the alloy. The whole was then very slowly heated and the heating and cooling curves determined. The transition temperature from the heating curve was found to be 281° C., whereas from the cooling curve it was 252° C.

It is a fact that the most serious safety problems encountered in US underground coal mines are related to roof-bolting operations. It is also true that roof bolting is usually the operation which limits coal production from a mine section. There has been a recent focus on activity involving roof bolting research, development, and new ideas as people concerned about mine worker safety and productivity realize that significant progress can be made in these areas, even with equipment presently available.

SINCE the earliest years of recorded history the durability and protective qualities of asphalt and tar have been known and utilized. The mummies of early Egyptian kings were coated with asphaltic materials, and asphalt mastics were common in Babylon. However, according to various authorities, it was not until 1780 that the first forerunner of present-day composition roofing was discovered,1 and the large-scale expansion of the industry has taken place since 1900. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Development was stimulated by the growing popularity of manufactured gas. The by-product tars from these operations accumulated in large waste piles that had no commercial value and were a source of annoyance and expense to the gas companies. These tars were offered at very attractive terms to anyone who would take them away, and the infant "composition" roofing industry benefited accordingly. At first the process consisted simply of dipping sheets of burlap or other fabric in a tank of molten tar or asphalt. The long strip of roofing was rolled up for convenient handling, and the early experimenters soon found that it was necessary to dust the surface of their new "roll roofing" with some kind of material that would prevent the tarred surfaces from sticking together. Any finely divided, low priced local material like sand or fine gravel served this purpose and from its application the roofing-granule industry grew. As time went on other characteristics of a properly applied mineral surfacing were recognized. As with wooden shingles, tar and asphalt can be ignited by flying embers from near-by fires. It was found that by increasing the largest particle size to the maximum that could be successfully embedded, and by properly controlling the amount of smaller fractions retained in the grade so as to cover the asphalt completely a Nigh degree of resistance to fire was attained. Needless to say, in this early period asphaltic roofing needed such selling points to gain acceptance in a field dominated by wood, slate, and tile. When asphalt is protected from the sun's rays it is extremely durable, but when exposed to sunlight its surface is comparatively rapidly decomposed. Completely covering asphalt roofing with mineral surfacing protects the asphalt and adds materially to the life of the roof-conservatively, 500 per cent. Slate Granules In the production of split slate shingles a large quantity of waste slate is accumulated, as 60 to go per cent of the rock quarried is discarded. This waste was a continuing burden on the industry. Some was marketed as ground slate flour for filler in paint and linoleum, and there is a record that as early as 1906 two carloads of coarse screenings from slate flour were marketed as granules for surfacing roofing.
