THE northern anthracite fields, although facing the same economic problems as the southern fields, are confronted with the additional problem of fast dwindling reserves of anthracite which can be conventionally and economically won. The mining of coal which remains in thin beds and the recovery of pillars from areas heretofore considered unrecoverable, either by reason of cost or surface restriction, pose problems of increasing importance to the economic life of the northern field operations. Successful approaches have been made to this problem and other work is being performed that holds promise. There exists in the northern anthracite field millions of tons of solid coal, the recovery of which has not been too successful due to the following inherent operating faults: inability to concentrate producing areas, the great quantities of rock to be cut and handled, lack of consideration of proper sequence and speed of second mining, and the continued use of the mine car as the basis of payment. A mining system that has successfully solved these major problems has been in operation in the Scranton area since 1944. Over 1% million tons have been produced from veins varying from 3 to 4% ft thick by this method, which is known as the multiple panel-triangular system-conveyor mining.

The general location of the orebodies and workings is illustrated by the vertical projection of orebodies of the district as shown in Fig. 1. The Uncle Sam, Southwest, and Czar workings have many connections to the surface through raises and extensive cracks that were caused by moving ground. These divisions are cool and are ventilated entirely by natural means. The Holbrook is ventilated partly by natural and partly by artificial ventilation, while the Spray, Gardner, Lowell; and Sacramento are ventilated entirely by mechanical means. In some of the divisions mentioned above a considerable quantity of air exhausts through shafts of adjoining properties.

During the examination of a gold-property in Georgia, last summer, I had occasion to study the effect of different chemicals upon the ore; the object being to find a more economical method of extraction than chlorination, as practiced there, had proved to be. Some of my notes and results may be of interest to others. The country-rock consists of mica-schist, hornblende-schist and black slate. The vein-matter is quartzite and schist, containing some stringers of quartz, the whole forming a body from 20 to 50 ft. wide. All of the rocks in the vicinity have become disintegrated to a depth of from 50 to 75 ft., forming the so-called saprolite. I found the workings to represent two distinct classes : I. Open-cut surface-ore: very soft,oxidized and disintegrated; containing much alumina, silica and iron. Average value, $4 per ton. 11. Ore from lower levels : quartzites and schist; very hard ; containing much silica and manganese, some alumina, and from 2 to 10 per cent. of pyrites. Average value, $8 per ton. Class I. was soon dismissed. The only way to make it pay would have been by the use of steam-shovels and a large crushing-plant. The tendency to slime would be the principal difficulty.

An extensive swamp covers a large part of the town-site of Norway and adjacent laud. Through this swamp run two parallel oreformations. In the north one is the Aragon mine. The south one passes into the swamp on the Harrison property. On the edge of the swamp, about 1000 feet from the Aragon mine, a diamond drill, in the fall of 1889, located the ore-bearing formation and a probable ore-body. To explore further and develop this ore, the Penn Iron Mining Company proposed, in the spring of 1890, to sink a shaft. The drill had shown the depth of the glacial drift to be more than 60 feet. A test-pit near the location of the proposed shaft had struck, at a depth of 20 feet, an amount of water which a 200gallon pump was unable to lower. At the Aragon, a few years before, a shaft had been sunk to hard pan with great difficulty and many delays by the usual method of driving laths. Under the conditions it was decided to sink a caisson- or dropshaft. Two 40-horse-power boilers, a Lidgerwood engine with 4foot drum, and a good derrick were set up; and two No. 10 Kuowles

The intermetallic compound Ti2Co was studied by X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques. The phase occurs off stoickzometric composition, with its greatest variance at high temperature. The solubility limits of the phase have been cletermined, and an amendment to the titanium-cobalt phase diagram is suggested. THE first intermetnllic compound to appear at the titanium-rich side of the titanium-cobalt system was found by Laves and wallbauml to be Ti2Co. They described this compound as isomorphous with Ti2Ni and Ti2Fe, and demonstrated that it had a face-centered-cubic structure with 96 atoms per unit cell. This contention is supported by the work of Duwez and Taylor2 and Orrell and Fontana3 who also determined the lattice parameter to be about 11.30A. Rostoker4 believed that Ti2Co did not exist, and that the phase considered by the other workers to be Ti2Co was Ti,Co20. However, Orrell and Fontana determined oxygen and nitrogen contents and found that their alloys did not contain sufficient of these elements to produce significant quantities of a stoichiometric oxygen compound. The present investigation was initiated to determine the composition limits of the phase Ti,Co.

T HE new Secretary of the Institute has been asked to address the members through the medium of MINING .AND METALLURGY, and it is perhaps well that he should do this at the first opportunity after his election. The duty of the Secretary, as the present incumbent understands it, is that of attempting to carry on the functions of the Institute in a manner that 'will tend to make it serve its most useful purpose. What is its most useful purpose or purposes? This was concisely answered by Dr. Joseph W. Richards in the June issue of MINING AND METALLURGY under the title "Why is the Institute?" And yet its most useful purposes are not 'fixed ideals or definitely determined things, they vary from year to year, changing with the development of the nation, conforming to needs and anticipating future requirements. Many men of many minds cannot always see eye to eye. The ideas or ideals of one may seem trivial to another, an obvious necessity to one is an entirely useless activity to the minds of others. A number of the activities upon which the Institute is now engaged might have been looked won, a few years since, as uncalled for, unnecessary, and un- desirable. The participation in public affairs was one of these questions. The publication of three volumes in one year may have been a questionable thing to do, but it was an achievement. A monthly magazine that will pay for itself by carrying the Institute's message to its members has its detractors, and yet to many members it seems one of those things that are quite worthwhile. Fortunately, we have a large membership, and fortunately the majority of an intelligent body of such size is apt to have in common many ideas that are right and proper. RECENT developments in iron alloys containing nitrogen have indicated that this element may exert a considerable influence on the properties of the metal. This influence is not always in an undesirable direction and the indications are that nitrogen should be regarded as an alloying element, the amount of which should be subject to control, rather than as an inherently deleterious impurity. In controlling this element in liquid iron to the best advantage, it is necessary to have a reliable background of fundamental data pertaining to solubilities, rates of solution and chemical reactions of nitrogen in liquid iron. Obviously, the first step in such an investigation is the determination of the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron, and this has been the object of the experiments described in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in solid iron has been measured by Zurich,1 Sieverts,2 Martin,3 and Iwasé4 and, the agreement among the first three inspires confidence in their results. No accurate determinations of its solubility in liquid iron have been recorded though several investigators have obtained approximate results. Strauss5 was able to introduce 0.03 to 0.04 per cent nitrogen into steel by the action of either ammonia or nitrogen on the liquid metal. This was accomplished by Eilender and

Briefly, can you relate how you got into the minerals industry and some of your experiences as an executive, engineer, and administrator? Also would you tell ME about your affiliation with the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME? Roseburg, Ore., was where I was born and raised. It was, and still is a lumbering town; it couldn't have been any farther from mining. Upon graduation from high school, I turned 18 and, having already signed up with the Army Corps of Engineers, I was in the service eight days after my birthday. Four months later I was in New Guinea. As an amphibious engineer, I saw many of the Pacific and Philippine Islands, and ended up in Japan just a few days after the war was over. In later years, my work took me back to several of the places I had been during the war.

Control of artesian ground water has played an important role in the development of Texas Gulf Sulphur's phosphate mining venture in eastern North Carolina. To facilitate dry mining methods, 60 million gpd of fresh water is pumped through wells from a limestone aquifer underlying the uniform flat-lying ore section. Hydrologic information revealed from pumping tests has been used in successfully developing a depressurizing system. Computer assistance is used to plan well patterns. High volume pumping has lowered water levels in water wells over a large area in the Coastal Plain without detrimental effects on water quality in the aquifer. Cooperative effort between mining firms will be required to control the ground water as new mines are developed in the district. An intricate observation -well system is monitored regularly over the wide area of pumping effect to ensure that gradient reversals have not caused salt water encroachment.

The protaxis of the North American continent consists, as is well known, of a large V-shaped area of Archæan rocks, which lie for the most part in the Dominion of Canada, and occupy an area of not less than 2,031,000 square miles. The western limit of this area extends from 'Lake Superior in a northwesterly direction to the Arctic Ocean, the southern is found along the Lower St. Lawrence as far as Labrador. A minor area, spoken of as the Adirondack region of northern New York, has a somewhat broken connection with the main body in a narrow band of igneous rock, which crosses the Upper St. Lawrence where it leaves Lake Ontario. The ancient crystallines are also presumably beneath all the later sediments, hut the above brief description outlines their principal exposures. This great rock-complex consists, for the most part, of a series of gneisses, which present great variations in both structure and composition. In certain sections areas of gneisses of the general composition of granite, and remarkably uniform in character, prevail. They consist largely, if not exclusively, of crystalline rocks in which a banding or foliation has been induced by pressure. These rocks constitute the basal member of the Laurentian system, and by later writers have been referred to as the Ottawa gneiss. In other and quite extended areas, gneisses, regarded by many as composed of altered sediments, are associated with crystalline limestones, quartzites, and much injected igneous matter. To this series the term Grenville has been applied. STRATEGICALLY situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer- consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommercial operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in-lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1, 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Official estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) THE existence of iron ore and anthracite coal in the neighborhood of Providence, R. I., has long been known, chiefly as a geological fact; that these materials, so near to each other and to tidewater, are of such a good quality and are present in such large quantity, as to have seriously raised the question of establishing blast furnaces there, was a surprising fact to me; and I have thought that the few notes I have lately gathered on the subject would be of interest at this partly New England meeting. The coal field referred to has an area of above 400 square miles, and is found throughout the belt of transition rocks extending from Newport Neck to Mansfield, Massachusetts.
