A simple rnodel for interstitial solid solutions has been devised in which each solute atom interacts with the solzlent lattice in such a way as to exclude an integral number of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied by solute atoms. The vemaining interstitial sites ave not affected. In calculating the entropy of such a solution the increase in the number of interstitial sites available to solute atoms due to the ozlerlap of blocked sites is taken into account. The ther-modynamic functions and the solute activity fov the solution rnodel are calculated. It is shown that considevation of the overlap sues vise to a correction term of the order 8' ( where 0 is the ratio of solute to solvent atoms) in the thevmodynamic functions of the solution and the solute activity. The theo,uetical equation for the solute activity was used to analyze the available data for the activity of carbon in austenite at three different temperatures. The use of a computer enabled many comparisons to be made between the experimental activity data and those predicted by both the complex blocking model and the simple, widely used blocking model in which the ozierlapping of blocked sites is not taken into consideration. Even though at the highest concentvations oj carbon the value of 0 is small it is shown that the best fit to the experimental data is found with the complex blocking model. RECENTLY it has been shown by analysis of gas-solid equilibriums that many interstitial solid solutions can be described by the quasi-regular solution model in which the partial energy of solution E, is independent of composition and, apart from a composition-independent term due to nonconfigurational factors, the partial entropy is that of an ideal solution. Dilute solutions of nitrogen in both bcc and fcc iron,' dilute solutions of oxygen and silver,' carbon in a Fe,' and dilute solutions of carbon in ? Fe2 are all quasi-regular. In addition many hydrogen-metal solutions, both dilute and concentrated (with the notable exceptions of the H-Ni and H-Pd systems), can be described by this model.3 However, it has been shown that, at various temperatures, solutions of carbon in ? Fe begin to depart strongly from quasi-regular behavior at low concentrations. A plot of the activity of carbon in ? Fe relative to pure graphite vs atom fraction of carbon (Cc) calculated from Smith's data4 begins to depart from the (nonlinear) plot for a quasi-regular solution at about Cc = 0.02. Several statistical models have been proposed to account for the thermodynamic behavior of carbon in y Fe. Darken and smith4 set up a model in which a carbon atom in its octahedral site in the fcc lattice has either one or no neighboring carbon atoms in the twelve nearest-neighbor octahedral sites. It is assumed that the number of carbon atoms having more than one nearest neighbor is negligibly small and that a solute atom does not interact with another solute atom located at a greater distance than the first shell of interstitial sites. Thus this model contains two characteristic interaction energies. Darken and Smith showed that this model gives reasonable agreement with the measured variation of carbon activity ac with composition. It is noteworthy that Darken and Smith concluded from their analysis of the activity data using this model that there was a repulsive force between carbon atoms in austenite which reduces the concentration of C-C pairs below that corresponding to random mixing. Recently Aaronson, Domian, and pound5 have considered in detail the statistical model developed by Lachere and by Fowler and Guggenheim7 and have shown that it is compatible with the activity data for carbon in austenite. In Darken's model the energy of solution of carbon in austenite is dependent on temperature and concentration; the departure from Henry's law arises from the concentration dependence of the energy of solution. In Aaronson, Domian, and Pound's discussion of the Lacher, Fowler, Guggenheim model the interaction energy wy between adjacent carbon atoms in austenite is strongly temperature-dependent. Aaronson et al . suggested that this temperature dependence of wy and hence the energy of solution of carbon could be explained either by the formation of clusters of carbon atoms (despite the repulsive nature of wy) or by the dual occupancy of the octahedral and tetrahedral sites by the carbon atoms. The United States is self-sufficient in bituminous coal and lignite resources to meet the high range of energy demands forecast for the remainder of this century and beyond. The known or proved recoverable reserves of energy from coal in the United States are estimated to be 88% of all fuel reserves, whereas the energy reserves for oil are estimated to be 276, gas 376, shale oil 5% and uranium 2% (as now used). The demand for all forms of energy used in the United States is increasing at a rate of 3% to 4% per year. Presently, coal is competitive on a supply and cost basis with other fuels in conversion to electrical energy and as a source of energy for converting raw minerals to metals and nonmetals, but it is not competitive in transportation and other uses that demand the high flexibility that oil and gas enjoy because of their form. Coal conversion to fluid forms is essential to make it interchangeable with gas and oil to meet the markets they now occupy. Essentially, the chemical constituents that make up coal are the same hydrocarbons that make up oil and gas; it is a matter of reconstituting the proportions of hydrocarbons to make coal interchangeable with the other fuels. The production of coal has fluctuated widely between the peak production of 631 million tons in 1947 to a low of 403 million tons in 1961. Throughout this period, the total value of the production, f.o.b. mines, has averaged more than $2 billion annually. Beginning with 1962, there has been a steady upward trend in coal production with only minor fluctuations that were mainly caused by labor disputes. Output for the latest typical year, 1970, was 588 million tons. Production in 1971 was affected by a major strike and dropped to 548 million tons. Exports of coal from United States to foreign countries have increased steadily and developed into a substantial annual market for over 71 million tons per year. About 56 million tons of this is suitable for metallurgical purposes, and the remaining 15 million tons is exported for electric power generation. The Jeffrey Company Opens Branch in Seattle The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, announces the re-opening of its Northwestern Branch Office at Seattle, Wash., and the appointment of Mr. Percy E. Wright, Consulting Mechanical Engineer, as District Manager for Oregon, Washington, Alaska, British Columbia and Alberta. Mr. Wright, who has been in the Northwest since 1910, and whose connection with the Jeffrey company dates back to 1902, has' had a wide and varied experience and training in the handling of the Jeffrey line which will enable him to be of great assistance to customers in solving their elevating, conveying and transmission problems. Trade Catalogs To a majority of the public, the name 'DuPont suggests military powder-munitions of war. The DuPont Products Book A-430 (April, 1916) lists 251 distinct commodities made. and sold by this company, many of which are far removed from destructive work. Mining men are fully cognizant of the need for explosives in constructive work, but they may be surprised to know that side by side with the powder and dynamite this company manufactures such peaceful articles as substitute leather, combs and collar buttons. The substitute for leather is Fabrikoid, varying in weight from a quality light enough for bookbinding to one heavy enough for trunks and automobiles, and the combs and collar buttons (with scores of other articles) are made from Pyralin. The book also contains a long list of chemicals, and a shorter list of special products and miscellaneous materials such as charcoal, wood flour and saltpeter. The Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Ohio, making elevating, conveying, crushing, screening and power transmission machinery, has just issued its. latest Bulletin, No. 177, :featuring self-propelling wagon and truck loaders for handling crushed stone, sand, gravel, clinker, coke, etc. These machines are described as having a capacity of 1 to 1 ½ cu. yd. of material per minute, with power to load crushed stone maximum size pieces through 3 ½ -in. ring and to load trucks or wagons in 3 or 4 min. The self-propelling device is designed to enable one man to operate the loader as it is fed into the pile, and to move the machine about under its own power.

This paper reports the results of studies of the impact properties of quenched and tempered alloy-steel plates as a function of sulfur content. It was found that the impact energy levels decreased continuously as the sulfur content increased and that there was a straight-line relationship between impact energy and sulfur content when plotted on logarithmic coordinates. Cross rolling raised the level of these Lines for transverse tests and lowered the level for logitudinal tests proportionately to the amount of cross rolling. ALTHOUGH it has been generally recognized that, for applications in which notch toughness is critical, the sulfur content of the steels used should be held to a low value, quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness has not been available. For such applications, it is a common practice to specify minimum impact values, and in order that these may be met consistently it is important that the steel producer know quantitatively the effect of sulfur on notch toughness so that realistic sulfur content limits can be applied to the steels they produce. In many instances, particularly in flat-rolled products, impact properties are specified in the direction transverse to the principal rolling direction, so that the factors affecting the anisotropy or directionality of impact properties are also of concern to the steel producer. For some applications, furthermore, it is a common practice to increase the sulfur content of steels in order to improve their machinability, and, in such instances, the effect of this practice on notch toughness may often be of concern. This paper reports on an investigation, carried out at Battelle Memorial Institute, designed to furnish this quantitative information on the effect of sulfur on notch toughness and also to furnish further information on the factors affecting the anisotropy of impact properties in wrought heat-treated alloy steels. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental steels were of intended base analysis: 0.30 pct C, 0.80 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 2.5 pct Ni, 0.80 pct Cr, and 0.45 pct Mo. Steels were made with sulfur contents varying from 0.005 to 0.179 pct. The steels were prepared from 600-lb induction-furnace melts. Steels containing 0.020 pct or more sulfur (at meltdown) were melted from a charge of ingot iron (except for one heat): lower-sulfur steels were made from electrolytic iron. The charge consisted of ingot or electrolytic iron, ferrosilicon to give 0.10 pct Si, and ferromanganese to give 0.05 pct Mn. At meltdown, electrolytic nickel, ferromolybdenum, iron phosphide, and pyrite were added followed in sequence by ferrochromium, sili-comanganese, ferrosilicon, and ferromanganese. The slag was then removed and graphite added to give the desired carbon content. Bath temperature was adjusted to 2850°F and, when no other additions were to follow, 2 lb per ton of aluminum was added, immediately before tapping. Compositions of the experimental steels appear in Table I. Analyses are from single determinations, except sulfur which was analyzed in duplicate. A test sample (3 in. in diam by 6 in. long) and a 575-1b ingot were poured from each heat. The test sample was poured in a sand mold; the cooling rates of the test sample and the large ingot were approximately the same. Chemical analysis chips and metal lographic specimens were taken from the test samples. The ingot was 8 in. sq at the base and 9 in. sq at the top. A 5 X 5 X 6-in. sand mold hot top was completely filled in teeming the ingot. After solidification, the mold was stripped from the ingot which cooled to room temperature. Ingots were reheated to 2250"F and rolled to 1.9-in. slabs on a commercial mill. The slabs were box-cooled to room temperature. Sections of the 1.9-in. slabs were heated to 2250°F and rolled on a Battelle laboratory mill according to one of three schedules: 1) rolled straightaway to 0.5-in. plate; 2) rolled straightaway to 1.3-in. thickness, then cross rolled to 0.5-in. plate (29 pct cross rolling); or 3) cross rolled from 1.9-in. to 0.5-in.-thick plate (46 pct cross rolling). The 0.5-in.-straight- or cross-rolled plates were normalized at 1700°F for 1 hr and then water quenched from 1600°F. Plates were then tempered 2 hr at 1240°, 1170°, 1080°, or 860°F to obtain Rockwell C hardness of 25, 30, 35, and 40, respectively. Tempering was followed by quenching to room temperature to avoid temper embrittlement. Slack-quenched plates were isothermally transformed for 26 min at 800°F, quenched, and tempered 2 hr at 1170°F. Pearlitic microstructures were obtained by holding 168 hr at 1200° F, followed by quenching. Charpy V-notch specimens were taken both transverse and longitudinal to the main rolling direction, notched perpendicular to the plate surface, and tested. SINCE the year 1643, when the first blast furnace in America for treating iron ore was built at Saugus, Mass., out of mica schist quarried in the neighboring district, the procurement of a suitable refractory for furnace lining has been a problem of concern to the operators of furnaces. The stacks built of mica schist continued to smelt iron ore until about 1836, when, according to F. H. Norton, the first firebrick were produced', at Queens Run, Pa. Other writers speak of brick having been molded and burned in Massachusetts about the year 1834. In 1841, Andrew Russell began to produce medium refractory plastic clay brick near East Liverpool, Ohio, that were used for lining blast furnaces'. The well-known Kentucky clay-producing district was not opened up until the year 1871, but since then it has produced a large percentage of the linings for iron blast furnaces. While some strides have been made by the refractories industry during the 100 years that have passed since the first firebrick were produced, it has been only during the last two decades that any real progress has been made towards bettering the product, even though the method of production had improved. Perhaps the fault lies with the user of the brick rather than with the producer, for not sooner demanding a supe¬rior product. During the past 15 years the tonnage produced per lining has increased from 500,000 gross tons to 1,000,000 gross tons, and now some furnaces are producing 1,600,000 gross tons and better on a single lining. It is true that enlarged capacity of furnaces and improved practice have accounted for some of this increase in tonnage, nevertheless better quality in firebrick must be given credit for its share. However, we are not yet ready to say that we have reached a maximum life of furnace lining. We believe that a better product can be produced and that the refractories industries of America will, through their extensive research depart-

Significant cost savings and improved ground stability are two initial indications from the current wet process shotcrete ground support program at the Lakeshore mine. The area of shotcrete for ground stability is not strange to the Lakeshore operation. Since the beginning of the project, various shotcrete techniques have constantly been experimented with, incorporating all the latest technological developments. Over the years, the use of shotcrete has been employed as a primary, temporary, or permanent support, singly or in combination with rockbolts and steel sets. The extent of shotcrete usage compared with steel sets and rockbolts has varied from time to time as dictated by the overall state of the art. In 1972, for example, the ratio of the linear drift footage supported with shotcrete to that supported with steel sets averaged 1.0. In 1973, that ratio was about 3.0. Overall, for the Lakeshore mine, there are about 8000 drift ft of shotcrete, 8000 drift ft of steel sets and timber, 750 drift ft of formed concrete, 21,000 drift ft of rockbolts, and 3700 drift ft of combined type support.

THE object of refining copper in the reverberatory furnace is to obtain a metal which will have the highest attainable degree of malleability, ductility and electric conductivity, and present at the same time a level surface when it solidifies in the mold after casting. These desirable physical properties are governed by the character of the impurities and the forms in which they are present, by the amount of cuprous oxide retained by the copper, by the quantity of gas held in solid solution, by the casting-temperature, and by the thickness of the casting. The effects of impurities, of cuprous oxide and of gases upon the mechanical properties of copper have been studied by Hampe in his classical paper "Contributions to the Metallurgy of Copper." The most recent research into the effect of metals upon the electrical conductivity of copper is that of Addicks.2 The influence of cuprous oxide upon the electrical conductivity has been investigated by Walker' and Addicks.4 The absorption of gases has received' attention by Hampe,5 Stahl 6 and Heyn.7 The effects of casting-temperature have been noted by Stahl.8

A generalized mathematical model has been developed to describe the kinetics of the gaseous, topo-chemical reduction of porous hematite spheres. Gas-solid reduction is permitted at each of three advancing interfaces and is controlled by a complex series-parallel sequence of chemical and transport steps. Despite the fact that transport resistances are significant to the advance of each interface, little deviation from linear advance is predicted for the first 98 pct of reduction. Calculations to predict the movement of magnetite /wustite interface by a solid-state diffusion mechanism have been incorporated into the earlier dense-pellet model.' The porous-pellet model is found to give a better description than the dense-pellet one for McKewan's measurements2 of interface movements in dense polycrystalline hematite reduced in hydrogen-water vapor mixtures. THIS paper reports a continuation of work"3" directed toward the better understanding of gas-solid reactions and the development of mathematical models that may be helpful in the design or control of ore-reduction processes. Laboratory studies of the reduction of single oxide samples in tube furnaces normally employ an abundant excess of pure reducing gas. Reduction may appear to be adequately described by a model assuming gas-solid reaction solely at the iron/wustite interface.''' However, when iron ore is reduced in either a fixed bed or an efficiently operated counter-current column, there are portions of the bed where the partially spent gas is no longer capable of reducing wustite to iron. Nevertheless, the formation of the intermediate reaction products, wustite or magnetite, can and does continue. In order to account for this aspect of the reduction of beds of particles, three semiempirical mathematical models were devised.' One of these was for the limiting case of completely dense particles, and two alternatives were provided for porous particles. For purposes of the analysis, a dense pellet was defined as one in which the wustite and magnetite layers were impervious to the reducing gas when the atmosphere was capable of forming iron. In a porous pellet, the intermediate product layers were assumed to be sufficiently permeable to allow reducing gas to penetrate beyond the iron/wustite interface to form wustite and magnetite by removal of oxygen as a gaseous product rather than by a solid-state redfiction mechanism. Further progress required a better understanding of the reaction of the individual particles with the gas stream. A perspective is presented of the steel plant sulphur distribution and elimination problem from coal to liquid steel ready for teeming, giving distributions of sulphur over a range of coke sulphur content, and some methods of sulphur control, in the blast furnace, external desulphuriza-tion between blast furnace and open hearth, distribution between fuel, slag, and metal, and methods and limitations of control of sulphur in the open hearth furnace. AS a part of the 1951 AIME symposium on sulphur in steelmaking, it was thought that a discussion of the distribution of sulphur throughout the whole series of operations, from coal and ore to finished steel ingots, might have some value in giving a perspective on the whole problem. The following discussion is an attempt to present such an overall picture. The order is that of the actual plant operations, beginning with a very brief consideration of the coking process. Sulphur in Coal and Coke Since by far the largest source of sulphur entering the steelmaking cycle is in the coal used to make coke for the blast furnace, it would seem reasonable to eliminate some of it, either from the coal, or the coke, or during the coking process. This has appeared impracticable up to the present, at least, for two main reasons: the low activity of the organic sulphur in either coal or coke, and because of price limitations involved in treating a low cost material such as coke. A variable portion, usually M or less, of the sulphur is present in coal in the form of pyrites or similar compounds, and a large part of this sulphur may be removed in the coal washery. Most of the sulphur, however, is normally present as "organic" sulphur, intimately associated with the coal structure. Its distribution prevents any separation by mechanical means. Its low activity makes improbable ' any rapid chemical removal, although hydrogen will remove sulphur from both coal and coke. Thus, prolonged recirculation of coke oven gas in the coking process would tend to leave a smaller percentage of the total sulphur in the coke residue. Table I shows a typical distribution of sulphur from coal into products in the coking process. As the sulphur in the coal increases, the sulphur in the coke tends to increase in about the same proportion. Sulphur in the Blast Furnace The best picture of the situation in the blast furnace is provided by a sulphur balance of raw materials entering, and of products leaving, the furnace. The difficulties in accurate weighing and sampling of the variable solid materials entering this process, and the number of hours required for the raw materials to descend through the furnace under variable operating conditions, make it difficult to obtain an accurate balance. However, balances made over periods of weeks or months tend to average out some of these uncertainties. Table I1 presents three typical sulphur balances similar to a number that the writers have calculated. In most of these the slag volume calculated from the sulphur balance is, in some instances more, and in other instances less, than the value corresponding to the best input and output balances of the other slag constituents (lime, silica, alumina, etc.). Probably the greatest source of error in these calculations is the sulphur content of the slag. Despite some possible inaccuracies the balances of Table II show rather definitely the following points: 1—That 87 to 95 pct of the total sulphur input is in the coke and 95 to 97 pct of the total sulphur output is in the slag. Also, that if any sulphur leaves the furnace with the gas it is relatively small, amounting to a possible 1 pct or less. 2—At the lower sulphur coke level of 0.86 pct the total amount of sulphur charged is 15 Ib of sulphur per ton iron increasing to 26 lb per ton at the higher sulphur, intimately associated with the coal struc-rare burdens containing sulphur-rich ores will the total sulphur burden fail to be nearly proportional to the content in the coke used. 3—The 7 to 9 pct of the total sulphur input from the limestone of furnaces B and C is due to the relatively high sulphur content of the stone, 0.226 and 0.265 pct, respectively. In the case of furnace A, the sulphur content of the limestone was only 0.06 pct which resulted in only 3 pct of the total sulphur input coming from this source. Union Carbide began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.40 kg U3O8 /t) (0.80 lb U3O8) were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leaching project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. The operators were most generous in allowing us to visit their site and in answering our questions. They were also helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. Their experience confirmed our belief that it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for conventional milling. Based largely on what we had learned from Western Nuclear's experience, we undertook a program involving a laboratory study to determine the characteristics of the mineral stockpiles, as related to heap leaching, and to conduct a pilot heap leach adjoining our Gas Hill mill. Basically the pilot heap construction and leach procedure were similar to those described in the literature l, 2 with certain modifications to permit detailed monitoring of the operation. In May 1972, the decision was made to construct a test heap. The UCC plant at Gas Hills, Wyoming was selected as the most appropriate site for the following reasons: (1) The necessary equipment for heap construction was readily available. (2) Stockpiles of mineral from the various mining sites were on hand: (3) Construction of the heap could be made on an abandoned tailings pile minimizing problems associated with environmental approval. (4) Proximity of the mill would allow product streams to be absorbed into existing circuits. (5) Necessary utilities were available. (6) Tailings water from the existing circuit could be used for leaching. A program for the pilot heap leach was developed with the following primary objectives. (1) To confirm the data obtained in bench-scale tests particularly on uranium recovery, acid usage, and ore permeability. (2) To evaluate plastic liners used for base preparation. (3) To investigate heap configuration variables. (4) To determine heap leach amenability of the different mineral sources. (5) To establish the economics of heap leaching low-grade ores.

THE CHAIRMAN (B. B. GOTTSBERGER, Miami, Ariz.).-On your trip today through the Inspiration and Miami mills you have seen in actual operation the machines which represent the changes adopted in grinding methods in the Miami district from the beginning of operations in March, 1911. In one section of the Miami plant are three Chilean mills not yet discarded, representing the first machines adopted. In another section, pebble grinding is still in operation, while in the balance of the plant, pebbles have been replaced with iron balls. In all cases these machines are handling a feed which is the product of roll, grinding down to about ¼ in. in, size. The latest step in grinding in the district, You saw at the Inspiration plant, where in Marcy mills a filed, the larger pieces of which remain on a 2-in. opening, is being reduced in one operation to a product of which only about 3 per. cent. remains on the 48-mesh screen. A detailed comparison of the methods used at the two plants would be very instructive but our own work at Miami has not yet reached a point where such a comparison is possible, the reason being that our final product is not yet fine enough. By means of larger Hardinge mills operating in closed circuit with Dorr classifiers soon to, be installed in one section of the plant, we hope to obtain, under properly balanced operating conditions the same end result as at Inspiration. It, might interest you, however, to know some of the results we have obtained here by the substitution of balls for pebbles. With pebble grinding, using three 8-ft. by 22-in. mills, followed by one 8-ft. by 66-in. mill for regrinding the coarse product of the primary mills, we handled 636 tons per 24 hr. in one section of the plant. Substituting balls for pebbles in the first operation and using two mills in place of three we obtained a tonnage of .714 tons to the section. With the use of balls both in the primary mills and in the regrinding mills, the tonnage for one section was raised to 822 tons per day. Coincident with this increase in tonnage, we also obtained a greater efficiency. The use of pebbles in all mills showed 21.5 per cent. plus 48-mesh material in the final tailing, which figure was reduced to 13.9 per cent. for balls followed by pebbles, and to 4.6 per cent. with the use of balls both in the primary and regrinding mills.

The notes given in this paper, the result of observations made during recent brief professional trips to the northern States of Mexico, are offered as a slight contribution to the geological knowledge of a region little known, but long famous for its rich gold- and silver-mines. They are not detailed geological studies, but they contain, I believe, the salient facts. The following districts were visited: 1. Santa Eulalia (silverlead) ; 2. Parral (silver-lead); 3. Las Vigas (copper); 4. Jimenez (copper); 5. Guadalupe y Calvo (gold); 6. La Cumbre (gold); 7. Palmarito (silver); 8. Cananea (copper); 9. Sierra Pinitos (gold); 10. Sierra Azul (gold). 1. The Santa Eulalia Silver-Lead Deposits. Seventeen miles SE. of Chihuahua is the mining district of Santa Eulalia, to which that city owes its origin and long prosperity. Discovered in 1703, this district has been, and still is, one of the great silver-lead producers of the world. For 86 years after its discovery, the total output upon which the crown tax was paid amounted to $112,000,000. Worked until within the last 20 years by the most primitive methods, without machinery of any kind, the deposits continued to yield a vast treasure of silver; at present the yearly tonnage far exceeds that of former times. A broad-gauge road runs from Chihuahua up the valley of a small creek to the village of Santa Eulalia, which is situated within the borders of the mountains of that name. A few miles out of Chihuahua a narrow-gauge railway, owned by the Chihuahua Mining Co., branches off to the mines. Single crystals of high-purity molybdenum were de-formed at temperatures from 195°to 473°K, and the effect of deformation on the electrical resistivily was deler-mined. To separale the resislivity components of point and line defecls some cryslals were annealed at 473°K. The vale of resislivily increase wilh strain was nearly linear and was strongly dependent upon the deformation temperature. Point dejects are annealed out without any effect on the flow stress. At low temperatures the flow stress is a linear function of the square root of the resistivity increase attributable to dislocations. ELECTRICAL-resistivity measurements have been used successfully to gain information on structural changes in metallic materials. During plastic deformation the electrical resistivity rises because of electron scattering from newly created lattice defects. Such measurements lend themselves, therefore, to corroborating results from direct observation of lattice defects and, to a certain extent, to correlating defect densities and distribution with mechanical properties. Published information on research with single crystals of the bcc metals of Group VI, particularly molybdenum, is still limited. Yet, molybdenum single crystals of relatively high purity can be readily prepared by electron-beam-melting techniques. Furthermore, some valuable information on the defect structure of deformed crystals by direct observation is available. Lawley and Gaigher,1 for example, have examined dislocation configurations in deformed molybdenum crystals by means of transmission electron microscopy. Their results revealed that the dislocation density and distribution were strongly dependent upon the deformation temperature. These findings differed from those by Keh and weissmann,2 who found that the average dislocation density in polycrystalline iron deformed between 138° and 298°K depended only on the degree of strain and not on the deformation temperature. Martin3 and peiffer4 showed that point defects introduced in polycrystalline molybdenum by cold work can be eliminated by annealing at a relatively low tempera-ture. In view of their work it became apparent that resistivity measurements of suitably annealed crystals could disclose changes in their dislocation structure and contribute to the understanding of the work hardening of molybdenum crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Crystals were grown by electron-beam zone melting5,6 of 0.062-in.-diam molybdenum rods (99.99 pct) supplied by General Electric Lamp and Wire Division, Dover, Ohio. The crystals, about 4 in. long, were prepared by using five zone-refining passes at a speed of about 6 mm per min in a vacuum of about 5 X l0-6 Torr. The resistivity ratio of the crystal, p(4.Z°K)/p(273°K), was generally near 10-3. These crystals were used as tensile specimens of uniform diameter in the "as-grown" condition. They were oriented for maximum shear on the (011)[111] slip system (Schmid factor >0.49). The specimens were held in spherically seated Templin-type grips so as to minimize bending. Samples were deformed on an Instron machine at a strain rate of about 5 X 10-5 sec-1 in an isopentane bath with dry ice at 195°K, in ice water at 273°K, and in a vegetable-oil thermostat at 373° and 473°K. The temperature in the latter was maintained constant within +2°K. Resistance measurements were carried out with a Kelvin double bridge. The resistance of the potential leads was kept low by using large-diameter wires outside the low-temperature bath. Many of the resistance data were checked by measurements made with an ac bridge. Current and potential leads were spot-welded to the specimens. The distance between the potential leads, about 3 in., was also considered to be the gage length for the strain measurements. Diameter and gage length of the samples were measured optically with an error of less than 2 pct. These measurements were used also to insure that the deformation had been uniform over the gage length of the specimen. Resistivity changes were then determined from the resistance measurements at 4.2°K assuming constancy of volume. In the course of a test, the crystal diameter, gage length, and resistance at 4.2°K were determined first in the initial state and subsequently for various amounts of elongation.

A recent survey of existing analytical results, and an attempt to correlate them with each other and with the known history and behavior of the samples, indicated that none of the commonly applied methods could be considered established as intrinsically reliable. It was. therefore, desired to attempt to establish the reliahility of some one method by external evidence. If this were to be accomplished, other methods could then be evaluated in terms of the method establibhed. The correct method was accordingly to be chosen without regard for cost, speed, or convenience; with the requirements for routine application to be reserved for 1ater consideration. The method of total combustion was chosen and submitted to a limited number of tests against primary standard samples. Considerable experimental difficulty was encountered, indicating that additional work on the experimental arrangements is desirable. While the work to (late by no means represents a completed investigation, it is helieved that the combustion method is basically sound and that its development should be continued. Choice of Method Of the several available methods, mechanical disintegration. electrochemical methods'2'3 modifications of the Sieverts experiment,% and vacuum fusion, were all judged to contain one or more factors of un- certainty not at present completely cvaluated or suhject to complete control. These methods, therefore, were considered currently unsuitable for referee purposes. Solid evolution was considered to be of doubtful significance when conducted in the alpha range. A reasonable chance for a true analysis was found for evolution in the gamma range. Preliminary tests have indicated a very slow rate for evolutioll from gamma iron. indicating a running time of possibly 100 hr. for a one-centimeter sample. Difliculty in distinguishing such slow. evolution from blank gas was anticipated, hence the method was not consitlerctl the most suitable for the present purpose. The combustion method was evaluated as being most sound on fundamental principles. The only important unknown would be to determine that the iron oxide formed did not occlude water at the tcmperaturv of the combustion.with the odvious precautions of using a sound and clean specimen, providing a system sufficiently tight to give acceptable blanks in longtime runs, and providing a suficicntly sensitive measuring system, reasonable, precise, and truthful analytical results could be logically expected. The work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and G1ocker;l Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45' to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (II3)[II2], (ooi)[ioo], and a combination of (II0)[II5] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,' who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. Test Materials and Equipment For this investigation, one commercial heat of 68-32 brass was cast in the form of bars for cold-rolling, I31/2 in wide and I1/2 in. thick. The analysis was as follows: 68.83 per cent copper, 0.04 per cent lead, 0.01 per cent iron, 31.12 per cent zinc (by difference). The bars were so processed to the final thickness, 0.020 in., as to obtain on this thickness all possible combinations of the variables listed below except those involving the sequence of 84 per cent penultimate reduction and 84 per cent final reduction: I. LATEST estimates of Russian steel production for 1951 give rise to the belief that on at least one vital front, the Western bloc of nations has maintained a definite advantage. On the surface, we are outproducing the Eastern bloc by more than twice. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe estimates Russian output at 31.30 million tons, a 15 pct increase over the previous year. Production for the entire Iron Curtain is figured at 40.93 million tons. Western Europe alone produced 17 pct. more steel during the same period. The figures are misleading in one sense. We have no precise idea of how much steel is being used for arms. The Western nations are still expending much of their production for consumer goods, and you cant throw washing machines in a shooting war. It is significant to note that Russian production is well, beyond estimates made by world authorities prior to the current international situation. INTERIOR Secretary Oscar L. Chapman warns that the United States must make use of the resources of other nations or face mineral impoverishment once the time of struggle is over. He pointed out that the present struggle between two ideologies can leave the United States in such a state as to preclude anything but political' victory-with an accomp anying economic loss that will be irreparable. Chapman scored the attitude whereby conservation programs are looked upon as a luxury, pointing out that the nation faces an ever increasing need for action on that front. He also announced that the Bureau of Mines doubled its facilities for producing pure zirconium during 1950-51 at the request of the Atomic Energy Commission. Zirconium may be an important structural metal for atomic power devices. The Interior Secretary also said that the AEC has provided the Bureau with funds for the study of radioactive minerals and to help test and evaluate about 9000 ore samples believed to contain uranium.

THE opinion has been widely held that the corrosion of alpha brass occurs by the selective solution of zinc. As late as 1939, Fink1 and Evans2 suggested that in the initial stage of the corrosion the selective solution of zinc produces copper-rich areas, which subsequently act as cathodes that facilitate the deposition of copper. Previously Abrams3 had shown that most of the copper found on corroded brass was redeposited and not residual, although he did not consider the nature of the initiation of the corrosion process. Enough data exist to indicate that any metal surface is sufficiently heterogeneous to provide the anodes and cathodes necessary for the initiation of corrosion.4,5 Thus, for alpha brass we need postulate not an initial selective solution of zinc, but only the existence of local differences in electrochemical potential. The heterogeneity responsible for potential differences may arise from oxide and other films as well as from alloy concentration gradients. Even though selective corrosion may be possible in some alloy systems, previous data on alpha brass as well as the experimental work reported in this paper do not require this supposition. Bengough and May,6 in a discussion of Abrams' paper, first suggested the addition of small amounts of arsenic (0.03 per cent) to alpha brass to prevent the redeposition of copper (dezincification). This suggestion was later substantiated by Nixon.7 In their studies of the inhibiting influence of arsenic, Evans and Fink were led to the selective-solution hypothesis in order to explain the initial corrosion of such alloys. They believed that an arsenic film covered anode areas and prevented the formation of copper-rich spots capable of acting as cathodes for the deposition of copper. They did not consider, however, the mechanism by which the arsenical film was formed. Bengough and May,8 in another publication, suggested that the commonly found gray or black arsenical film may act to: (I) carry oxygen to the brass surface, (2) increase the discharge potential of copper on brass, (3) precipitate cuprous chloride from colloidal suspension in chloride solutions. Masing9 assumed that the film found upon arsenical brass was metallic arsenic. His measurements of hydrogen overvoltage of bulk arsenic led him to believe that the inhibition of dezincification occurs because the overvoltage of a brass surface is lowered by the arsenic film. He reasoned that this film would permit the more rapid reduction of hydrogen at the cathode, which would prevent the redeposition of copper. In a recent paper,10 we have pointed out that the film formed during the corrosion of arsenical brass and copper in stagnant solutions is essentially arsenious oxide (As203),

THE iron deposits of the Imataca Range of Venezuela, which occur along the Orinoco River, in the northern border of the Guayana High-lands, have lately attracted attention on account of their economic possibilities. Many deposits occur in this area; some of slight economic importance and others that may rank with the largest masses of high-grade iron ore of the world. The geology and the character of the ores seem to be remarkably similar to those of the large iron deposits of Brazil. In the investigation of the Venezuelan deposits a definite relationship has been found between the mineralization of the large orebodies and igneous intrusions, especially norites and granites. The following paper is the result of a field and laboratory investigation of the ore deposits. The field work was done during the months of February and March of the year 1929, partly in the company of Prof. W. H. Newhouse. The laboratory studies have been made in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Profes-sor Lindgren and Professor Newhouse.

Much has been written and said concerning the alleged wasteful and uneconomic use of natural gas and petroleum. Espccially condemned has been the use of natural gas for the production of carbon black and the use of heavy fuel oil under steam boilers.' The critics of these usages of gas and oil have sought to make effective their verbal attacks on the industry by the repetitive expression of the words "inferior" and "superior" uses2 of petroleum. Thus, to employ natural gas for residential heating was to use it in a superior way; to use it for the production of carbon black was to use it in a wasteful and uneconomic way. To use petroleum for the production of automotive fuel was to use it in a superior way; to employ it as a residential fuel and as the prime source of power in an industrial plant was to use it in an inferior and uneconomic way. No doubt the objections to such employment of gaseous and liquid natural hydrocarbons originated in the belief that natural gas and petroleum are limited, nonregenerative mineral resources, and that the functions they perform can be just as well performed by other natural resources like coal13 of which practically unlimited reserves are known. The generations that have dominated each of the last four decades have counted reserves4 of petroleum in terms of a few years supply. Meanwhile, domestic demand for motor fuel rose spectacularly from a few million barrels in 1900 to more than 500,000,000 bbl. last year.5 The more imaginative and vocal critics drew startling word pictures of the catastrophe of 25,000,000 motor vehicles made useless and of the great automotive manufacturing and allied industries brought to an untimely end, and millions of workers left hopelessly unemployed by what they called the deplorably rapid depletion of the petroleum reserve. Many of the critics have been sincere advocates of the conservation of natural resources; many others, and in recent years probably the majority, have espoused the doctrine of conservation to promote their own self-interest rather than that of the public. The latest advocate of severe restriction in the use of petroleum for the alleged purpose of conserving the petroleum resource proposes to achieve that end by a bill,6 now before
