Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites which contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action by residual pegmatitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw materials for ceramic and chemical industries. However, with the discovery of Searles Lake, brines became new sources of lithium. Indeed, the 1960s may well be referred to as the "brine decade" because several brine bodies of significant economic importance were discovered. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, Nevada, presently exploited by Foote Mineral Co., and the Great Salt Lake of Utah, to be exploited by the Great Salt Lake Chemicals Corp., have been defined as major sources of lithium. Also a lithium-bearing brine has been discovered in Chile. Following the termination of the AEC purchase program in 1959, several companies such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp. were forced to close down their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminum potlines), the lithium industry grew steadily, and with the potential application of lithium metal in batteries and nuclear reactors, a healthy growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Geochemistry of Lithium Lithium is the third element in the periodic table. It is the lightest of all the metals, having an atomic weight of 6.938. Its ionic radius is 0.60A and its charge is + 1. The geochemistry of lithium has been extensively studied and has been summarized by Rankama and Sahama (1950), Goldschmidt (1937), and Hortsman (1957). The distribution of lithium in igneous rocks is controlled by its size and its charge, and by the (MgO+FeO)/Li2O ratio. In the early stages of crystallization of a magma, that ratio is very large. Consequently, both magnesium and iron are removed by ferromagnesian minerals in preference to lithium which is then concentrated in the residual magma. This results in an enrichment of lithium in silicic rocks and pegmatites (Strock, 1936). Pegmatites are coarse-grained igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of postmagmatic fluids. Minerals within pegmatites may also form by metasomatism (Jahns. 1955). Genetically, the pegmatites are associated kith neigh- boring intrusives. Mineralogically, granitic pegmatites contain feldspar, quartz, and mica as the main constituents and a variety of exotic elements such as lithium, beryllium, tantalum, tin, and cesium, which may or may not occur in economically significant concentrations. Detailed studies by numerous investigators (Cameron et al., 1949, 1954; Hanley et al., 1950; Jahns, 1953, 1955; Page et al., 1953) indicate that pegmatites often exhibit an internal zonal arrangement, with each zone containing a specific suite of minerals. The lithium minerals are usually found in the intermediate zones, and although as many as 13 zones have been recognized by Cameron, a complete zonal arrangement is rarely found. Zoning of pegmatite bodies has also been observed on a regional basis. The regionally zoned pegmatite sequences exhibit mineral assemblages and complexity according to their respective distance from the granitic bodies to which they are genetically related (Mulligan, 1965). The cost of shipping British coal by water to domestic and ex- port users has been expensive. The traditional transportation system functioned as follows: coal in up to 50 different grades was accumulated in railway cars at several loading ports; on the arrival of a vessel, cars were dumped in the desired order to produce the required blend. It was a direct rail- road-to-water interface. Railroad freight was high because of the poor utilization of the large number of small (14, 18 or maximum 28-ton capacity) hopper cars required. Ocean freight was high because the ships were small, mostly on the order of 1500-3000 dwt and even these took a long time to load. Assembling and loading larger cargo presented a challenge in logistics to the ports, the railways and the coal washeries. The accommodation of larger bulk carriers was hampered by a tidal range of up to 24 ft which led to the development of impounded harbors, with locks that limit the size of vessels.

The often-heard question "How can we interest young geologists and engineers in AIME?" is virtually the same as "How can we interest young geologists and engineers in the glamorous mining industry?" Many persons would reply that AIME and industry should improve their image by various devices aimed at high school students and teachers, boy scouts, and even grade school children. For more immediate results, I suggest that we concentrate our efforts at the professional level on students already identified as geol¬ogists and engineers. Why does our glamorous profession appear distinctly unglamorous to most of the engineers and geologists currently in college and graduate school? The answers seem quite simple to me. First, the profession talks almost exclusively to itself, seldom to the engineering or geologic public, and almost never to the lay public. Second, the industry has been overly conservative in all aspects of recruiting during an especially competitive and affluent period. Consequently, mining has taken a terrific public drubbing from preservationists who still portray its leaders as robber barons. SME and AIME have, of course, various commendable programs for enticing student interest, including student membership, the low dues for this membership, the somewhat reduced prices at which students can attend AIME meetings and buy AIME volumes, and the large number of AIME Student chapters on campuses. Obviously, more active encouragements are needed.

As you are no doubt aware, virgin copper, tin and zinc are strategic metals today and little, if any, is available in the manufacture of brass and bronze ingots. The source of alloys used in the manufacture of implements of war are, therefore, from ingots made almost exclusively from the refining of available scrap. It is amusing to hear of the unusual physical properties of various alloys because they mean nothing unless the foundryman is able to produce good sound castings. A discussion therefore means little unless something is said about the relative foundry practice of the various brass and bronze alloys. Among the factors that influence the quality of castings produced are: (I) improper gating, (2) wrong pouring temperatures, (3) poor sand conditions, (4) bad melting practice, (5) faulty pattern equipment, (6) metal. It seems to be the consensus of opinion that about 95 per cent of defective castings can be attributed to the first three causes. Metal while a source of trouble at times, is probably the least responsible for foundry difficulties. As you all know, a molder never makes a bad mold. His first thought is to blame the "damn" metal as this is the path of least resistance. Let's consider the "damn" metal and how it is made. In the manufacture of ingot, scrap is collected at various sources and is shipped to the refiner either directly or through the scrap dealer or broker. It is usually sorted, although not always. In working toward a specified chemical analysis, weighed amounts of various grades of scrap metals are melted, and then oxidized by blowing air through the molten bath to rid the metal of detrimental impurities or reduce them to within specification limits after which they are skimmed off with the aid of some added fluxes. The bath of metal is then poled with wood, chemically tested before and after additions are made to bring it up to required specifications, and finally poured into ingots, after which a final chemical and physical examination is made. As mentioned above, the impurities have either been eliminated or reduced to the point where they meet the specifications of all Government Agencies or Technical Societies. Therefore, why worry as to whether castings are to be made from strategic virgin metals or secondary ingots from available scrap. Tests have continuously been made and it is a proven fact that physical properties are no better from virgin metals than from secondary ingots of the same composition. It is definitely more fool-proof to make castings from secondary ingot than from virgin metals because if an error is made in weighing the copper, tin, lead or zinc of the latter, the analysis is off balance. If an error is made in weighing secondary ingots, you merely have more or less metal but the analysis remains constant. Furthermore, when pure copper is melted. it is susceptible to reducing gases as well as oxides. Secondary ingot is already alloyed with natural deoxidizers such as zinc, etc., and the volatilization of the latter also tends to eliminate reducing gases mechanically.

Beu3 has proposed that the computed absorption correction be combined with the constant and that the experimental observation of the absorption correction used in the original method be eliminated. This procedure is permissible only if: 1—There is no preferred orientation in the sample, and 2—The geometric requirements have been met precisely. If these conditions are not met the validity of the determination is questionable. Unfortunately the necessary conditions must be tested experimentally for each determination, and this is done most easily by observing whether the apparent absorption has the form of Eq. 2. In practice it may be convenient to plot P/R vs the parameter sin (2? — )[sin (28 — +) + sin +] to obtain straight lines for the ap- parent absorption correction. Deviations from straight lines indicate either that the sample has not been positioned correctly or that the relative intensities are incorrect. Geiger counter spectrometer methods also have been used successfully for retained austenite determinations. In the usual spectrometer arrangement the sample makes equal angles with the incident and diffracted beams (8 = ); thus the absorption correction is simply 1/2µ and independent of 8. The retained austenite is then easily calculated from integrated intensity measurements on austenite and martensite lines. If the austenite content is not too low and if excessive fluorescence is not encountered it is possible to use filtered radiation and a recording spectrometer. The integrated intensities are then proportional to the areas of the diffraction peaks. For lower austenite contents the following technique was used: A bent quartz monochromator and a Geiger counter spectrometer are employed. The monochromatic radiation is focused on the front slit, and the counter slit is made broad enough to include the entire line. A series of readings are taken in the vicinity of the diffraction peak. The highest reading includes the diffraction line plus background. The background is obtained from the average of several readings on each side of the peak. The integrated intensity is obtained by subtraction. CrK, and FeKa have been used for such determinations. This technique has been found to be as sensitive and as accurate as the photographic methods. In the spectrometer methods the ratio austenite/ martensite may be obtained from readings on austenite and martensite lines and the application of Eq. 1. It is also possible to use external standards and to obtain the austenite contents from measurements on the austenite lines alone. The small correction for carbides then becomes unnecessary. I AM APPRECIATIVE of the honor you have done me in electing me to membership in your Society. I value the contacts with men of imagination and ideals which this implies. I am grateful for the recognition of such small contributions as I may have made, or helped to make, to the vast fund of scientific and engineering knowledge. We like to think, as we grow older, that our lives have not been purely parasitical, and that through our efforts some forward step, however small, has been taken toward improving conditions under which we live and do our work. In these days of industrial depression, we hear much criticism of our "machine age." Modern engineering, mass production, the complexity of our lives, all come in for some share of blame. The farmer is said to have been spoiled by the tractor and the gang plow, the factory worker has become a slave of the assembly conveyor, the scientific worker is no longer free but has sacrificed much of his individuality to the research organization of which he is a part. We wonder whether our work as engineers has been worth while and whether our striving after more efficient ways of doing things has been a curse to mankind rather than the boon we thought we were conferring.

AN equipment manufacturer swallows a bitter pill when he sees his machinery improperly in- stalled and not used to the full potential. This frequently happens with vibrating screens. Screens can be classified according to the path of vibration imparted to the screen surface. On this basis there are: 1) vertical circle or modified circle throw, 2) horizontal circle or modified circle throw, 3) vertical linear reciprocation, 4) tilted linear reciprocation, and 5) horizontal linear reciprocation. The most versatile vibration for medium to coarse sizing is generally conceded to be the vertical circle produced by an eccentric or unbalanced shaft, but other types of vibration may be more suitable for certain screening operations, particularly in the finer sizes.

The development and use of short-lived radioactive tracer methods for the onstream determination of residence time distributions in large-scale ball mills is described. Tests are reported on a pilot-plant ball mill with 0.43 m diameter and 0.86 m length and on an industrial mill with 1.83 m diameter and 2.74 m length. Tests with different tracer feed sizes indicate that the residence time distributions on both mills are independent of charge particle size. Similar tests are planned for a large ball mill of 4.57 m diameter and 9.30 m length. No safety problems were encountered in these tests and none are anticipated in tests of the larger mill.

This paper presents an investigation of the accuracy of population balance model predictions for ball mill scale-up. Experiments performed in 25.4 x 29.2 cm (10 x 11.5) batch mill are used to estimate linear grinding rate parameters that, in turn are scaled according to specific power draft to predict performance in 381 x 292 mm (15 x 11.5 in.) and 762 x 457 mm (30 x 18 in.) batch and continuous ball mills, respectively. Results are presented for wet and dry grinding of two homogeneous solids, limestone (soft) and quartz (hard), and one heterogeneous solid, a complex molybdenite ore. In all cases good agreement between predicted and experimental product size distributions was obtained.

A metal or alloy finds its place in commerce in proportion to its ability to serve certain purposes better and more economically than other materials. While there is some overlapping of the fields of application of the various metals under discussion in this symposium, each one has its uses for which it is especially adapted. While aluminum is the most recent of the metals to enter the field, the development of the industry has been based on its peculiar properties, by virtue of which new uses for non-ferrous metals have been created. There has been substitution of this new metal for other members of the group but there has been a far greater development in entirely new fields. In common with the other non-ferrous metals, aluminum is resistant to atmospheric corrosion. It also withstands the action of many of the common chemical reagents, strongly alkaline substances being the notable exceptions. The outstanding properties on which the application of aluminum is based are its low specific gravity and its ease of fabrication into the forms in which it is used. It is noteworthy that this property of specific lightness is retained in all the commercial aluminum-base alloys. This statement does not apply to aluminum bronze; this is more properly a copper-base alloy, since aluminum enters into its composition to the extent of only about 10 per cent. None of the commercial casting alloys of aluminum has a density exceeding that of the parent metal by more than about 10 per cent., and some are actually lighter. In the so-called "strong alloys" of aluminum in which strengths comparable to that of mild steel are developed by heat treatment, the greatest increase in density is only slightly more than 3 per cent., and one of these, also, is lighter than aluminum. This property of lightness combined with the desirable mechanical properties of the alloys, makes aluminum especially suited for parts of moving assemblies where saving in power, as well as a decrease in stresses resulting from inertia and vibration, are of importance.

Curtailment of production of crude oil, to the extent of effecting an approximate balance in supply and demand, was a problem confronting the oil industry in California throughout the year 1930. At the beginning of the year, with drilling operations only slightly checked, the California industry faced a steadily increasing potential production, an actual production in excess of market requirements and stocks of crude oil and refined products which had reached staggering proportions. During the year, the intensive development of the Playa Del Rey field and extensions to several oil fields, together with flush production from numerous large wells from both new and old fields, caused a steady increase in the state's potential production to a record peak in November of 1,186,000 bbl. daily. Despite the burden of this steady stream of flush production and the handicap of incomplete cooperation in several fields, curtailment successfully lowered the trend of crude oil production in California, except for the period of an open-flow test to determine actual potential production in several important fields in February. Under the curtailment programs in effect, the state's production of crude oil for the year was reduced 22 per cent. under the production of 1929 and even slightly under the production for the years 1927 and 1928. The total stocks of crude oil and refined products were reduced 2.7 per cent. during 1930, as compared to an increase of 30 per cent. in total stocks of all products during 1929. Drilling operations were reduced 28 per cent. as compared to drilling activities during 1929. Voluntary curtailment of drilling programs by many operators, particularly the major companies, accounts for the greatest portion of the reduction in drilling activity. The decline in drilling activity at Santa Fe Springs and in the east-side fields of the San Joaquin Valley was more than offset by development in new fields and extensions to deeper zones of old fields. There were 755 new wells completed during 1930, as compared to 910 completions in 1929. At the close of the year, 220 wells were drilling in the oil fields of California, 9 of which were being drilled in search of deeper producing horizons.

The convenience of mechanical arrangements for handling ingots, blooms, billets, bars, beams, etc., and feeding them to the rolls, is so universally recognized as to require no demonstration. In the rolling of heavy beams, such as are now coming into general use, such arrangements are practically essential, by reason of the difficulty and expense of the manual handling of the large masses of metal treated. I submit herewith the drawings of a rolling-mill feed-table, designed and patented by myself, which I think will be found simple in construction and operation, not likely to get . out of order, and efficient in performing the work for which it is intended. Fig. 1 is a sectional plan, taken on the line I I of Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line II II of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on line III III of Figs. 1 and 2. As the details of the drawings are numbered throughout, and the same number always indicates the same part, I cannot more clearly describe the mechanism than by giving the following key to these numbers: Nos. 2 and 3 are the sets of rolls (here shown as three-high rolls, though that is not absolutely necessary). Nos. 4, 4 are the two feed-tables, one on each side of the rolls. The uide frames of the tables are made of parallel channel-bars. Nos. 6, 5 are the feed-rollers, journaled between the channel-bars and provided at their ends with beveled gear-wheels, 6, 6, which mesh with beveled pinions, 7, 7, on shafts, 8, 8, which latter are driven by elevated power-connections, to be mentioned presently. DuRing recent years, tremendous strides have been made in the economical use of coal. This has resulted in, and to some extent has been a result of, making the fuel specifications more and more rigid. For this reason, all producers have found it necessary to improve their preparation materially, both as to sizing and the elimination of impurities, either by more effective preparation underground or at the tipple and cleaning plant, or both. This cause and its effect in all producing fields seem likely to continue for several years at least. The splendid inherent qualities of the Pocahontas and New River coals are known all over the world, but their good reputation is only partly due to inherent qualities, and to natural conditions which generally favor loading coal comparatively free from impurities; it is due in large measure to the care and skill used, either with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to ship products consistently low in ash. The first coal from the West Virginia smokeless fields was mined and shipped near Quinnimont, on New River, in 1871, while the first shipments from the Pocahontas field were in 1883. The development of both fields progressed rapidly. At first activities followed the main lines of the Chesapeake & Ohio and Norfolk & Western railroads, and were extended later as branch lines were built from these roads. The Virginian R. R., about 1907, opened up the Winding Gulf territory, which has since become a large producer of smokeless coals from the Pocahontas and the New River measures. Early Cleaning Methods In the early days, the tipples were simple wooden structures, with bar screens for separating the fines from the lump coal. All cleaning was done by the miners at the face, or by pickers in the railroad cars. Gates were provided in the chutes by which the flow of coal could be stopped when necessary while the pickers raked the surface of the coal in the car and picked out the impurities. BOLIVIA still remains among the oil countries that have proved oil acreage but no production which is being marketed. No steps have been taken during the past year to provide facilities for transport of Bolivian oil to market nor are any known to be contemplated for 1930. The only active operator to date is the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. The potential production from completed wells is practically unchanged from the 1928 figure of 6000 bbl. daily. As far as is known, there has been only one completion during the year 1929. This is the Machareti well, which is about 50 km. north of Villa Montes along the road to Charagua. The well is reported at about 250 bbl. daily initial production. The gravity of the oil is not known but is presumed to be about 40" Bé., the average for the region. The Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia has five strings working on various parts of its concession. No new locations have been made definitely. Company Activities There was no change in the situation of American holdings in Bolivia during 1929. The oil rights of an English company, acquired under a special colonization contract with the Bolivian Government, are being negotiated in New York and may mean the entrance of another of the large American oil companies in Bolivia. The Sucre Syndicate sold its holdings to the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia during the past year. .A local company called the "Aguila Doble" was formed during 1929 to drill a well or wells near the town of Cochabamba on structures mapped by a local geologist. It is reported that the Government is buying about one-fourth of the capital stock of this company for 500,000 Bolivianos (about $180,000). The company has not yet raised sufficieht funds to buy drilling equipment so that no operations have been started. According to the statements published in La Pas, this company has acreage on seven anticlinal structures near Cochabamba. This area lies about 8500 ft. above sea level on the eastern Hank of the Andes Moun-

The best currently available description of the longitudinal mixing properties of a porous medium is an equation of the form which relates the effective longitudinal dispersion coefficient Dp to the molecular diffusion coefficient Do, the electrical resistivity factor F, the porosity <f> and a Peclet number. If the parameters dpa and m are determined for a porous medium of known porosity and electrical resistivity factor, then a dispersion coefficient may be estimated for a given flow rate and a given gas pair. A new method, featuring on-line gas analysis by thermal conductivity and on-line data reduction by analog computation, was developed and used to determine these mixing parameters for eight naturally occurring sandstones and two dolomite samples. The exponent m of the above equation was found to vary between 1.0 and 1.5. The characteristic length dpa in the above equation was found to vary between 0.25 and 1.9 cm, with an average value of 0.4 cm for sandstones. Measurements were made on two cores in which paraffin wax had been deposited by evaporation from a pentane solution. They indicated that the presence of an immobile phase such as connate water could increase the dispersion coefficients significantly. INTRODUCTION While the petroleum and chemical industries have studied the mixing of miscible liquids flowing in consolidated porous media and of miscible gases flowing in unconsolidated porous media, relatively little data have been presented to describe the mixing of gases flowing through consolidated porous media. Such data are of particular interest to the gas storage industry. For instance, the U. S. Bureau of Mines is storing large quantities of a rich helium-nitrogen gas in contact with a natural gas in a dolomite reservoir. Since the rich gas occupies only 15 percent of the total reservoir volume, it is essential that the extent of rich gas-natural gas mixing be predicted and understood as a function of rock properties, pressure and rate of movement. This investigation was concerned only with the determination of longitudinal dispersion coefficients. It is understood that a transverse dispersion coefficient, which characterizes mixing perpendicular to the direction of flow, may be an order of magnitude less than the coefficient characterizing mixing in the direction of bulk flow.5719 It should also be recognized that the use of any dispersion coefficient is in itself a simplification. It is necessary to assume that mixing in a porous medium may be characterized by the equation for flow in a single direction. A number of authors1 l8,19 have pursued the mixing problem, not in terms of the so-called "dispersion model" described by Eq. 1, but in terms of a "mixing cell model". This model supposes that a porous medium is constructed of a large number of small mixing chambers and that the concentration of the diffusing component within each mixing chamber is uniform. Fick&apos;s law (Eq. 1) assumes that there is no gross by-passing of one fluid by another, and that there are not stagnant pockets of gas in the system under consideration as discussed by Coats and Smith.8 These assumptions are not always valid for flow through porous media and it is important to recognize the limitations upon Eq. 1.
