THE purpose of this paper is to present briefly a description of some of the special methods of separation or concentration, either singly or in combination with others, and to give certain operating data and examples. Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electro- static separators and air flotation or air tables. MAGNETIC SEPERATORS In general, separating is achieved by exerting upon a particle some kind of force opposed to gravity, either directly or at an angle. For example, in the Wetherill or cross-belt type of magnetic separator some particles are lifted vertically from the others because they have been exposed to a force to which they respond more readily than particles of lesser magnetic susceptibility. Of course, there is a limitation to this vertical rise, for the particle must be of a high enough susceptibility to receive a magnetic force greater than the 980 dynes per gram of gravitational urge. To overcome this limitation, the induction type of magnetic separator was developed, so that it is only necessary to instill, say, 30 to 60 dynes per gram instead of the 980, to cause a deflection away from the vertical in falling, and that deflection can be used advantageously when falling by inserting a dividing knife-edge. The induction magnetic separator (Fig. 1) has become a fairly well known method of concentrating and purifying. Pulses from large underground explosions which traverse the rock beyond the "fracture" and "plastic" zones do not behave as a spherical elastic model. Observed attenuation is greater than that predicted by the elastic wave equation, and the pulse form changes in a different manner, i.e., it usually lengthens with the first power of the distance. To more clearly define a mathematical real earth-wave model, detailed analyses of the spherical elastic and the Voigt viscoelastic models have been made, and results compared with observed wave forms from large confined chemical and nuclear explosions. TRANSIENT SPHERICAL ELASTIC WAVES Scope of Investigation Transient elastic spherical waves were investigated in detail. However, an elastic model is not, in general, an exact representation of wave propagation in rock. An understanding of transient elastic waves is desirable for gaining insight into explosive-generated wave phenomena because it can be employed for comparison of more complex and realistic models, such as the Voigt model, or others which may simulate real earth waves. The study was concentrated primarily on the peak values of the radial wave parameters : displacement, particle velocity, acceleration, stress, and strain.

When an Fe-Mn alloy is internally oxidized, the inclusions formed are MnO which contains some dissolzled FeO. In the internal oxidation reaction, not all of the manganese is oxidized; some remains in solid solution as a result of the high Mn-0 solubility product in iron. Taking these factors into consideration, the rate of internal oxidation of an Fe-1.0 pct Mn alloy is computed as a function of temperature, using available thermodynanzic data and recently published data for the solubility and diffusivity of oxygen in iron. The predicted and experimentally determined rates for the temperature range from 950 to 1350°C are in good agreement. ThE rates of internal oxidation of austenitic Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys have been studied extensively.1"4 Schenck et al. report the results of a few experiments with Fe-Mn alloys at 854" and 956C, and Bradford5 has studied the rate of internal oxidation of commercial alloys containing manganese in the temperature range from 677" to 899°C. When Fe-Mn alloys are internally oxidized, the inclusions formed are solutions of FeO in MnO, the composition depending on the experimental conditions. Since the thermodynamics of the Fe-Mn and FeO-MnO systems have been investigated,6"9 and since the solubility and diffusion coefficient of oxygen in y iron have been determined recently,' it is possible to predict the rate of internal oxidation from known data. The calculations used in predicting the rate of internal oxidation will first be outlined, then the results of the prediction will be compared with the experimental results of this investigation. PREDICTION OF PERMEABILITY FROM THERMODYNAMIC AND DIFFUSIVITY DATA Oxygen is provided for internal oxidation in these experiments by the dissociation of water vapor on the surface of the alloy. The dissociation reaction is: + H2(g) + [O] [1] where [0] denotes oxygen in solution. The equilibrium constant for this reaction is known as a function of temperature:' log As oxygen diffuses into the alloy, oxide inclusions are formed which are MnO with some FeO in solid solution. The reactions occurring are: [Mn] + [0] = (MnO) [31 and [Fe] + [0] = (FeO) [41 where [ Mn] is manganese dissolved in iron and (FeO) is iron oxide dissolved in MnO. The overall reactions may be written as follows: [Mn] + HOte) = (MnO) + H2(£) [5] and [Fe] + H20(g) = (FeO) + Hz(R) [61 The standard free-energy changes and equilibrium constants for Reactions [5] and [6] are known.6 Therefore the equilibrium constants for Reactions [3] and [4] may be obtained by combining known thermodynamic data for Reactions [I], [5], and [6]. For Reactions [3] and [4]: K = and For the present purpose, both the Fe-Mn7,8 and FeO-~n0' systems can be considered to be ideal, i.e., [amn] = [NM~] and (aFeO) = (NM~~) = 1 - (NFeO) where the Ns are mole fractions. These relations, together with Eqs. [I] and [8], permit us to compute both the oxide and metal compositions as a function of temperature and oxygen potential at any point in the specimen. For cases where the oxygen concentration gradient between the surface and the subscale-base metal interface is linear, the kinetics of internal oxidation is an application of Fick's first law: where dn/dt is the instantaneous flux of oxygen into the specimen, g-atom per sq cm sec; 6 is the instantaneous thickness of the subscale, cm; Do is the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in iron, sq cm per sec; p is density of iron, g per cu cm; h[%O] is the oxygen concentration difference between the surface and sub-scale-base metal interface, wt pct. B6hm and ~ahlweit" derived an exact solution to the diffusion equation for systems in which there is a stoichiometric oxide formed. They showed that the oxygen concentration gradient is given by a rather complex error function relation. For the Fe-Mn-0 system and for most other systems that have been studied, however, variations in oxide compositions are small and rates of internal oxidation are sufficiently slow that the deviation from linearity in the concentration gradient of oxygen is negligible. The mass of oxygen transported across a unit area of the specimen for the total time of the experiment is given by the mass balance equation:

Normal dodecyl mercaptan was evaluated as a collector for flotation of sulfide minerals and precious metals. The reagent is from the class of normal mercaptoalkanes (n-alkyl thiols), and is commercially available in the form of a mixture of n-dodecyl mercaptan, the primary constituent, and a water-soluble dispersant, under the trade name Pennfloat™ 3. * Reported are results of bench-scale flotation experiments on many commercially treated base metal and precious metal sulfide ores. Dosages, points of addition, and flotation pH were among the variables studied. Most notable results were increased copper, molybdenum, and precious metals recoveries. Dosages of dodecyl mercaptan on some ores were considerably lower than required for conventional collectors. The reagent was shown to be a highly effective and versatile collector on virtually all of the more than 30 sulfide ore types examined.

THE occurrence of this gas, in quite appreciable. quantities, has been observed for many years in its escape along the creeks of Western Pennsylvania, and more recently, in much larger quantities, from the oil wells in and near Venango County. Within about five years several gas wells have been struck, from which the gas has escaped continuously in prodigious quantities and at great pressure. During the last year a systematic attempt has been made to utilize the flow of gas from one of these wells, and results have been reached which were quite unexpected. This well, near Leechburg, Armstrong County, is about twenty miles northeast of Pittsburgh, on one of the side tributaries of the Alleghany River. It had been drilled in search of oil to a depth of 1250 feet in 1871, but none was found. A great flow of gas was developed, however, accompanied by a slight spray of salt water, and this has continued with little or no diminution to the present time. The gas in its escape has been discharged through a 5-inch pipe, and at a pressure of from 60 to 80 lbs. per square inch, but no exact determinations, either of the pressure or quantity, have been made. The rolling mill of Messrs. Rogers & Burchfield is on the opposite side of the river, and it has been for some years devoted to the production of fine grades of sheet iron from charcoal pig metal, by puddling and in knobbling fires. The usual weekly product of the mill has been 30 tons of No. 30 tin plates, and 50 tons of No. 24 to 28 sheets. The well was bought by this firm for $1000, and the gas is led across the river, a distance of about 500 feet, through a 3-inch pipe. It is distributed through half-inch pipes, and at a pressure of about 45 lbs. per square inch, to several of the furnaces, but a large fraction of the total flow of gas is still wasted at the well. No essential alteration in any of the furnaces has been found necessary in the use of the gas fuel, except to brick up the fire-bridge and to put in the gas and air pipes. The old grate used for coal is loosely covered with bricks and cinder, so that a slight percolation of air may take place through them. The gas is admitted through a half-inch pipe, and blows toward the fire-bridge through 18 or 20 one-eighth inch jets. The air is blown in at about 2 lbs. a

The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. Metal specimens were solidified through a measured thermal gradient so a free surface and the liquid-solid interface could be examined. A line structure was observed on the surface and a hexagonal structure on the interface. A model to explain these forms is proposed. NUMEROUS observations of the dendrite form have been made both in nonmetallic and metallic systems. From these, extrapolations have been made as to the probable dendrite form in pure metals. Observations of the dendrite form in pure metals, nevertheless, have been scanty. In general, these observations have been made on the skeleton dendrite after the mother liquid has been drained from around it, and a mechanism of the formation of the dendrite has been postulated from this solid form. Recent investigations have been conducted in an endeavor to make a study of the formation of the dendrite in several pure metals and the effect of several variables on this mechanism and final form. For these investigations, an apparatus was designed and constructed as shown in Fig. 1. It consists of a talc block containing a half-cylindrical depression, the end of which terminates in the conical recess of a copper block having an external attachment for cooling. A heating coil extends the length of the mold just beneath the lower limits of the cavity. The entire cavity for holding metal is coated with a thin film of graphite. Six thermocouples are equally spaced in the cavity and under the graphite, and six microammeters indicate the temperatures at the particular thermocouple stations. Readings were taken of all meters at the same instant time measurements were taken by photographing the panel of microammeters and a stop watch which was started at the beginning of the run. It was possible with this apparatus to solidify metals through a measured thermal gradient and to observe the progression of the liquid-solid interface with time by following the formation of the dendrite markings in the surface of the solid material. Mounting pressures to increase efficiency and yield, conserve energy, or minimize pollution have all taken their toll on the minerals industry. As management and technical personnel take a harder look at their operations for ways to shave cents off operating costs or to squeeze a bit more productivity out of existing equipment, instrumentation often comes up as the most effective answer. When Amax Lead installed an automatic grind control system in its Buick mill, ore throughput increased by 3 to 5%. Mill operators calculate that the initial investment is returned to them several times annually.

The favor with which the members of the Institute received Mr. Fernow's paper upon the use of charbon roux in the manufacture of iron has encouraged me to present this paper, in the hope of having the discussion upon the manufacture and use of the oldest and undoubtedly the best fuel for producing pig iron continued. Owing to the advances made in employing anthracite coal, bituminous coal, or coke, or mixtures of them, we are apt to forget how much of our present development is due to the pioneers in iron manufacture and the fuel which they employed in the production of pig iron. In Mr. Swank's last compilation of the iron and steel works of the United States, the furnace capacity of the country is given as 5,868,000 tons, of which 1,000,000 tons can be made in the 264 charcoal furnaces. In other words, over one-third of the furnaces now in existence use charcoal for fuel, and produce more than onesixth of the iron made. If to this is added the 130,000 tons of blooms and billets turned out by the 122 forges and bloomaries, the importance of the charcoal industries will be appreciated.

A knowledge of the fundamental principles of locating, sampling, testing and evaluating materials is essential in prospecting for mineral aggregates. In this discussion, mineral aggregates will be considered sand, gravel, crushed stone and slag that are used as materials of construction. The quantity of mineral aggregates produced in the United States during the year 1935 for such purposes was roughly 165,000,000 tons, about 60 per cent of which was sand and gravel, 37 per cent crushed stone and 3 per cent crushed slag. The total value of this material was approximately $100,000,000. It is apparent therefore that the prospecting for suitable mineral aggregates is of considerable economic importance. In prospecting for mineral aggregates, the methods employed are the same whether the organization is large or small. In the large organization there may be available geologists for locating sources of supply, a land acquisition department to arrange for the necessary options or permits, engineers to do the sampling, a laboratory for testing, and a board of consulting materials engineers to make the final selection. Even small organizations must follow the same general procedure, though the responsibility for the selection of aggregates may rest with one man, who may or may not be an engineer, but who must depend entirely upon his own judgment. Locating the Supply The initial step in prospecting for mineral aggregates is the locating of suitable, adequate and economic sources of supply for the project in mind. Commercial plants in the vicinity should be investigated and a survey made of the existing structures that have been built of aggregates from these sources. If the structures are rather old and show no signs of deterioration, it is fairly good evidence that the aggregate is satisfactory. If materials of the proper quality can be obtained from commercial sources in sufficient quantity, and delivered to the job economically, it

AN increasing amount of attention is being paid to the possible influence of oxygen, in its several modes of occurrence in steel, upon some of the properties of the metal; but clearly investigations along this line are unlikely to yield significant results until reliable analytical methods for the determination of oxygen have been established. This paper presents some results of a study of an improved Ledebur method which aims to determine a definite portion of the oxygen; namely; that which presumably is present in diffusible form in the. solid steel. These more or less preliminary results lead us to believe that the oxygen so determined has some significance; their presentation at this time will, we hope, stimulate discussion of, and focus attention upon, certain rather neglected aspects of the problem. Considerable work has been done recently on methods of estimating inclusions and on the vacuum-fusion method for oxygen; with results which, however, are of somewhat questionable significance. It is commonly presumed that the oxygen in a bath of molten steel in a furnace is present partly as a separate phase consisting of suspended particles of oxides or silicates, partly in solution, the latter being probably the more important. Upon addition of a deoxidizer, it reacts with some portion of the dissolved oxygen and precipitates it as additional suspended particles; the oxygen not eliminated in this way, which remains in solution in the liquid steel, may be regarded indifferently either as dissolved oxygen or as dissolved FeO. When the steel is poured, some of the suspended particles rise towards the surface, others remain trapped in the finished steel, appearing as nonmetallic inclusions in amounts corresponding usually to about 0.01 to 0.03 per cent 02 in the steel. The dissolved oxygen may be partly eliminated as CO during freezing of the ingot, but some remains either in solution or in part precipitated as FeO. Finished steels may thus contain oxygen in several forms: (1) In non-metallic inclusions which are probably quite insoluble in the solid metal at all temperatures; (2) in solid solution which at lower temperatures may be supersaturated; (3) in FeO particles produced by relief of this

This paper describes an improved acidizing technique which has been applied in acidizing gas wells in the La Gloria Field. Wells acidized in this manner exhibited a much greater increase in deliverahility than wells acidized in the conventional manner. The acid is injected into the well in small slugs separated by a small volume of high pressure gas. The acid and gas are displaced from the tuhing by high pressure gas to reduce the hydrostatic head on the well when the acid is recovered from the well. The well is opened for production as soon as the acid and gas are displaced. This procedure permits a very rapid recovery of the acid which results in large increases in the deliverability of the gas wells. It has been found advantageous in the acidization of gas injection wells to inject the high pressure gas directly after the acid without backflowing the acid out of the well. This practice has made it possible to inject the gas in the injection wells of this field with a much lower pressure differential. This reduces the horsepower required to inject the gas and also decrease:, the number of injection wells required per reservoir. INTRODUCTION The results obtained by acidizing gas wells ill the La Gloria Field have varied considerably in the past. For this reason. a planned study of the acidizing procedure was undertaken in order to obtain more consistent results. The Frio Sands of the La Gloria Field are rather permeable and it was not necessary to acidize many of the wells when they were originally completed. At the completion of an eight-year cycling program in several of the gas reservoirs, it became necessary to recomplete many wells in other reservoirs. It was found that the opan Flow potential of the wells recompleted in different sands was not as large as wells that were originally completted in that reservoir. A study of the drilling records of several of these wells indicated that the sands had originally been subjected to considerable hydrostatic drilling fluid overload while the well was being drilled to the deeper sands of the field. It is indicated that during this eight-year period, the drilling mud and water that were lost into the formation when the well was being drilled had formed a relatively impermeable Eone around the well bore. This impermeable zone around the well bore made it very difficult to obtain high deliverability wells when the original wells are recompleted in other zones. Muskat' has shown that in uniformly permeable and porous formations a zone of partial plugging one ft in radius around the well would drastically decrease the productivity of the well. The analysis for this problem shows that the production capacity of a well is very sensitive to the value of the permeability of the zone immediately surrounding the well bore. This is to be expected in view of the highly localized character of the pressure drop in a radial flow system about the well center. Experimental work on the process was begun on a laboratory scale at Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914, and transferred to East St. Louis, Ill. in 1916, where a commercial sized furnace was in technical operation until January, 1918. The essential steps of the process are as follows: Oxidized zinc ore or roasted zinc concentrate is mixed with crushed coke and coal-tar pitch and formed into briquets 9.25 in. (23.5 cm.) in diameter and 21 in. (53 cm.) long in a manner similar to that used in the manufacture of graphite or carbon electrodes, except that much less care and time are required. The composition varies with the nature of the ore; in one case, the composition was 100 parts ore, 70 parts coke, and 18 to 20 parts pitch. These briquets maintain their form and volume during and after the distillation of the zinc. This object is gained by using coke as the matrix and coal-tar pitch as the binder; this pitch becomes coke on heating and unites the ore particle and the original coke particle into a continuous mass. The briquet is an electrical conductor but only to such a degree that it can be used as a resistor. The size of the ore, as in the present practice of zinc metallurgy, ranges from fine material, such as flotation concentrate, to coarse table and fine jig concentrate. The process is not restricted to any particular kind of ore, but is applicable to pure high-grade ores, ores high in iron, and complex zinc-lead ores, since the residue from the distillation IS held immovably in place within the briquet. In the case of complex zinc-lead ores, the distillation is conducted with a carefully regulated temperature so that a high percentage of lead is retained in the distilled briquet, which may then be smelted for its lead content. In present zinc smelting practice, the reduction fuel is from 40 to 50 per cent. of the weight of the ore. In the briquet, it is from 60 to 85 per cent. of the ore; but unless the ore is exceptionally high in residue, the distilled briquet may be used over again as coke, or as a high ash coke for fuel purposes in power production. The increasing volume of data produced by the Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, Limited, during the course of coal exploration prompted the establishment of a computer based processing system for coal data. This system, known as the Coal Mine Evaluation System, consists of geological, mine planning and financial evaluation sub-systems. This paper describes the use of the geological sub-system in assessing the surface mine potential of a portion of the Witbank Coalfield, South Africa, in which more than one thousand core boreholes have been drilled to date.

It has been found that these physical properties, i.e. drop resistance, wet compressive strength, and plastic deformation under load, are generally related to the moisture content of the wet balls. A "criterion" method of analyzing data from a series of batch tests is discussed. This method facilitates the comparison of results of various test series. A time-sharing computer program, which correlates the test data from a batch series, generates the "criterion" values for subsequent comparison and analysis, and produces X, Y plots of the various moisture-strength relationships, is presented. Examples of computer output and use of the "criterion" evaluation method are given.

THE bellows are important and necessary agents in most melting processes. In addition to seeing that these have sufficient soft cloth, extend far and wide, and are of good design, including good valves and good long tubes, and that they cannot break and lose the air received, it is very important to give attention to their installation so that they may easily effect their purpose. Therefore I now wish to proceed by noting some common devices for moving them, both with water and with man power, so that you may make use of them as the need arises.

This account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects—namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle.' This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture) the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.
