INTRODUCTION Flotation of oxide minerals, particularly silicates, with cationic collectors differs substantially from classic flotation of sulfide minerals using sulfhydryl collectors. In the case of cationic flotation of these minerals, in general: 1. There is a greater importance of electrostatic interaction between mineral and collector. 2. Longer-chained collectors are required; as a rule at least 10 carbons must be present in the hydrocarbon chain. 3. Moderate concentration of collector is required. 4. Attachment between collector and mineral appears to be less strong even though the system may exhibit a large contact angle. 5. Required conditioning time before flotation is usually relatively short. 6. There is sensitivity to slimes. 7. The collectors usually possess frothing power. 8. Selectivity of cationic collectors for specific minerals is usually poor. Almost any of the oxide and silicate minerals may be floated using cationic collectors. DURING the heat-treatment of silver specimens for tensile tests it was observed that the bars blistered and became brittle when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. [ ] To check this unexpected result, a wide variety of commercial silvers were heated in hydrogen at 850°C, Only a few of the materials developed blisters, the most severe of which is the tube pictured in Fig. I. The microstructure of a cross section of the tube is shown in Fig, 2. Western Mining Corp. has announced plans to expand its mining operations at Kambalda, and to build a nickel refinery at Kwinana, near Perth, Western Australia. The refinery will use the ammonia-leach hydrogen reduction processes of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., and it is expected that by 1970, when the expansion is scheduled for completion, Western will be the world's fourth largest nickel producer. Although estimates have not been finalized, the total cost is expected to be about $55 million. The mine and mill facilities at Kambalda, which began production in June 1967, are now producing at the rate of 11 million lb of contained nickel per year. The company estimates the sulfide ore reserves at Kambalda and St. Ives at 10.4 million tons averaging an usually high grade of 3.8% nickel, or about 790 million lb of contained nickel. In addition, silicate and oxidized ores have been located in both areas.

At Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse limerock. While oversize material was crushed through Y4-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity.

The Albion phosphate-district embraces a territory about 4 miles wide and 6 miles long, in a northerly and southerly direction, situated in Levy county, Florida. The Florida Central and Peninsular railroad, running from Fernandina, a shipping port on the Atlantic, to Cedar Keys, on the Gulf of Mexico, passes through the center of the district. The post-office and railroad station is in the town of Albion. The physical features of the district present a series of white aqd whitish-gray sand-hills and ridges, rising about 130 feet above tide-water. The sand lies in a loose body, like that seen on the ocean beaches. In places the hills have the appearance of sand-dunes, such as are seen along the Platte river, in Nebraska. Beneath the sand are found the phosphate-deposits, which are partially exposed in places, but, for the most part, lie buried to a depth of 15 feet and more. In this district the phosphate is designated as " hard rock,"

In the case of an open pit mine, this is not possible to answer reliably until the ultimate (final) pit limits have been established. Techniques used in designing an ultimate pit are classed as (1) manual, (2) computer, and (3) combined manual-computer. It is shown that Ni3Al precipitates homogeneously from nickel-rich alwminum alloys as plates on the (100) planes. Prior to actual precipitation a process occurs which is believed to be one of increasing short-range order. After precipitating the Ni3Al plates enlarge through competitive growth. Discontinuous precipitation can occur simultaneously with the above processes. Recent ideas of the origin of precipitation strengthening appear adequate to explain the hardness changes. REMARKABLY little appears to be known about the precipitation process in Ni-Al alloys in spite of their technical importance. This investigation originated to supply additional information about precipitation in general, this system in particular. Information on the structures and kinetics have been obtained through the use of hardness, X-rays, microscopy, calorimetry, and resistivity on high-purity alloys. PROCEDURES Six alloys, Table I, were prepared by melting carbonyl nickel and high-purity aluminum in alumina crucibles in vacuum and casting into 1-in. graphite molds. All rods were homogenized at least once at 1300°C for 24 hr prior to swaging and this was repeated on the first three alloys after 75 pct reduction. Alloy 4 could be reduced only 10 pct at 1000°C (probably in two-phase field) prior to fracture but 1/4-in. samples quenched from 1100°C were readily reduced cold. Alloy 5 was reduced 15 pct cold but failed on the next pass while alloy 6 of essentially the same aluminum content failed inter-granularly without apparent flow up to 1000°C. The alloys were heated in hydrogen at the elevated temperatures and formed thin, coherent aluminum oxide coatings which provided excellent oxidation resistance at lower temperatures. However, freshly prepared surfaces showed considerably less resistance at 500"to 700°C in air and apparently resulted in internal oxidation. As a consequence, low-temperature agings were carried out in evacuated tubes. RESULTS The isothermal hardening behavior of these alloys at 500"and 565C is given in Figs. 1 and 2. These results were obtained from samples cold worked 75 pct, recrystallized at 1000°C (1100°C for the 7.8 pct Al) and quenched in water. This recrystallization was used to give smaller grain sizes so as to obtain more uniform hardness values and the points represent an average of five readings. The electrical resistivity was measured on 1/16-in. wires quenched from 1000°C during aging at 495°C to give Fig. 3. The energy release and its rate are given in Fig. 4 for the 6.9 pct Al alloy during aging around 500°C. Inasmuch as this was a single run, its accuracy is not known but certainly the general shape and magnitudes are correct. The method used to obtain these results is described elsewhere.' Data for the aging at 600°, 700°, and 800°C of these alloys cold worked 50 pct are given in Fig. 5. Supplementary information from microscopy and X-ray diffraction have been included to indicate recrystallization, discontinuous precipitation and the appearance of superlattice lines from the Ni3Al. The hardness of these alloys as annealed, aged, cold worked, and cold worked and aged is given vs composition in Fig. 6. Those samples which were isothermally aged, Figs. 1 and 2, were reaged at 532°C and at successively higher temperatures for the indicated times to give the data of Fig. 7. These results as well as certain others, support the idea that the level of hardness reached for temperatures above 600°C are equilibrium values more or less independent of path. This being the case, the breaks in the curves would be the complete solution of the Ni,Al. The electrical resistivity versus temperatures for some of these alloys, both aged and unaged, is given in Fig. 8 along with those data from heating slowly (10 deg per day) to high temperatures. Interesting points include the lowering of the Curie temperature (the change in slope), the lack of any indications of a solubility limit and the large temperature coefficient for the Ni3Al. A slight break for Ni3Al around 100C shows up but this is not a Curie temperature as Ni3Al is not ferromagnetic down to -190°C. Metallographically both the nickel-rich solid solution and the Ni3Al appear very much like pure nickel. Profuse twin boundaries are present both

THE orientation dependence of work hardening has previously been studied over the entire range, i.e., including special orientations of high symmetry, in aluminum1-3 and silver.* The differences between various orientations are substantial, and the trend is the same in all fcc crystals. However, there are quantitative differences in behavior between aluminum and silver at room temperature, particularly in the (100) orientation. While many experiments on gold have been reported,5'9 none included the special orientations. We therefore undertook tension tests on gold crystals of the axial orientations (100),(110), (Ill), (211), and, as a representative of single slip, one whose Schmid factor was 0.5 (hereafter referred to as m = 0.5). Single crystals of dimensions 1/4 by .1/4 by 6 in. were grown from the melt1' at a rate of 4 in. per hr, using gold of 99.99 pct purity obtained from Handy and Harman. A growth rate of 1/8 in. per hr, or a purity of 99.999 pct,ll produced no difference in results. The crystals were annealed at 1000°C in air for 24 hr and furnace-cooled down to room temperature, after which they were electro-polished in a solution of potassium cyanide (40 g), potassium ferrocyanide (10 g), soda (20 g), and enough distilled water to make 1 liter of solution, at a current density of 0.02 amp per sq mm. After 2 or 3 hr, a very smooth surface was obtained by this method. Nine m = 0.5, two (loo), one (110), three (Ill), and one (211; crystals were tested at room temperature in a floor-model Instron machine at a tensile strain rate of 0.5 pct per min. The accuracy of the stress measurement was k10 g per sq mm up to 500 g per sq mm, k2 pct for higher stresses. The strain measurement was accurate to t2 pct. The scatter of stress at a given strain among the crystals of the same orientation was small, *5 pct being the largest. The representative stress-strain curves for various orientations are shown in Fig. 1. Table I summarizes the work-hardening parameters as used by seeger.12 Results of other investigators are also included in this table for comparison. There are no previous data for the corner orientations. Values for m = 0.5 crystals agree fairly well with those of Berner. Tm is defined as the stress at which the stress-strain curve begins to deviate from linearity of Stage 11. However, in practice this is a very difficult value to estimate because each investigator has a different idea of linearity. Therefore, the comparison with the values of other investigators may not be valid. In the present experiment, (100) crystals had the highest 111, followed by (111) crystals. The work-hardening rate in Stage I1 was highest for the (111) crystal followed by the (100) crystals. Our value for 0x1 of m = 0.5 orientation agrees very well with those of other investigators. 1) Single-Slip orientation (m = 0.5). These crystals were oriented so that the primary-slip vector was contained in one side face. The dimension perpendicular to this side should then not change if single slip indeed takes place. Within the accuracy of measurement, this dimension did not change during the deformation. Since the accuracy is k0.2 pct, the amount of secondary slip is less than 0.7 pct of the slip on the primary-slip system at 30 pct tensile strain. This is in conformity with the results obtained by Kocks" for aluminum crystals. The tensile axis moved toward (211) during the deformation. Slip bands, Fig. 2(a), were very fine and closely spaced. Some deformation bands were observed. There were no clear-cut cross-slip traces such as the ones observed on aluminum m = 0.5 crystals. 2) (111) Crystals. The orientation of the tensile axis was stable during the deformation. From this observation, one can deduce that at least three slip systems must have operated, and probably all six because the remaining three all have cross-slip relation to one of the first three.' It was very difficult to observe the slip markings. Consequently, we could not confirm by this method that six systems were operative during the deformation. At high strains (above 50 pct shear strain), this orientation had the highest stress-strain curve. At 80

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY The Equilibrium Position of A 1.—Some of the most important data on this subject are collected in Table I. Definition of Ae 1.—-Just as we call A 1 of rising temperature Ac 1, and that of falling temperature Ar 1, so we may give the symbol Ae 1 to the equilibrium position of A 1. Preliminary Assumptions.—In deciding what weight to assign the various data, and indeed what data are to count, three assumptions should be made. These are : 1. The corollary from the phase rule, that the temperature of Ae 1 is constant and independent of the carbon content, though, of course, it may be changed by the presence of other elements. 2. That because neither in heating nor in cooling can the transformatioil begin before the temperature reaches Ae 1, though it may be delayed by lag till after the temperature has passed beyond Ae 1, therefore Ae 1 should be at or below the observed beginning of Ac 1 and at or above the observed beginning of Ar 1, and, a fortiori, it should be at or below the observed maximum of Ac 1, and at or above the observed maximum of Ar 1. It may be necessary to take these maxima into consideration in view of the experimental difficulty of detecting these beginnings. 3. Because of the extraordinary degree of lag in the immediate neighborhood of Ae 1, as proved by Brayshaw, little weight should be attached even to the most conclusive evidence that the transformation has not occurred on reaching, or even staying at, a given temperature, because that failure to occur may always be due to lag. Evidence that the transformation has occurred, or has even begun, at a given temperature deserves incomparably greater weight. In other words, the temperature may pass beyond Ae 1 without inducing the ' transformation, but the transformation cannot be induced except by

Pulsating contpresslon experiments have been carried out on coppev single crystals in order to test the adequacy of mechanisms which have been suggested for stage I cvack grouth when tension-compression loading is the mode of- applying stress. Although dejorrrzation continues slowly for many millions 01 cycles under Pulsating compression stresses both within slip bands formed in the first cycle and by the creation of new bands, the morphology of these bands is not typical of fatigue slip bands in general and neither initiation of cracks nor propagation of artificially induced cracks was observed. It is therefore concluded that 1) initiation and growth of cvacks in fatigue is a consequence of repeatedly reviersed, microplastic deformation rather than intermittent, unidirectional deforma-tion, 2) gvowth of- cracks in polycrystalline specimens FAILURE of a plain specimen subjected to cyclic tension-compression stresses is known to take place by two stages of cracking.1,2 The first stage is characterized by propagation along slip planes roughly at 45 deg to the stress axis, in the outermost layers of the specimen, and at a rate of the order of angstroms per cycle. The average macro orientation of a stage I crack is normally at right angles to the stress axis,3 however, except in a few cases, e.g., single crystals in suitable orientation, when both the micro and macro directions of propagation are at 45 deg to the axis. After a stage I crack has penetrated to such a depth that the stress on the remaining section of metal is significantly increased, stage II crack propagation succeeds stage I, at right angles to the stress axis both micro and macroscopically. Direct evidence of the processes occurring during a subjected to pulsating compression stresses is caused by the setting-up of local tensile stresses due to interactions between grains, and 3) both unslipping mechanisms and operation of the "plastic blunting process " within a single slip band are adequate descriptions 01- stage I growth, being fundamentally similar. The slip mode of a material, however, is considered to control whether unslipping or the plastic blunting process takes place. Thus materials of planar slip mode fauor unslipping while those hacing a wavy mode, and capable of cross slip, can fail in stage I by the plastic blunting process. Similarly, and perhaps more importantly, reversed torsion and tension-compression modes of applying stress may be expected to cause the unslipping mechanism and the plastic blunting process, respectively. single stress cycle4,5 shows that stage II crack propagation takes place by a repetitive plastic rounding and closing of the crack tip. This mechanism has come to be called the "plastic blunting process".6 On the other hand, the extreme smallness of the phenomena occurring in stage I growth prevents elucidation of its mechanism by direct observation. Many suggestions have been proposed for this mechanism,'"-" most of them involving some kind of random or systematic unslipping process. It is possible, however, that the mechanism of stage I growth is essentially the same as that of stage 11, but occurring on a much smaller scale.6 In this situation, it has been observed that cracks propagate along slip bands comprising dislocation cell structures and bounded on either side by regions of different dislocation density and distribution." Since there is evidence that such bands are softer than their matrix, * it may be expected that the plastic blunting process occurs within a single slip band during stage I growth, rather than on two gross bands as in stage 11, when the acting stress is greater.= The blunting of the crack tip allowed by coordinated

WORK in recent years1-' has indicated a complexity of the processes of deformation of metal crystals not previously appreciated and not fully accounted for by any hypothesis so far advanced. Furthermore, the nature and mechanism of formation of nuclei of recrystallization have not been determined precisely. The deformation of single crystals of zinc has been studied frequently, but the purity of the zinc and the perfection of the specimens sometimes have been given little consideration. Methods have been developed recently that readily yield zinc single-crystal specimens of high quality.5 In the present work, such specimens were deformed in various ways under various conditions, and deformed specimens were annealed to obtain information regarding recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth. The paper attempts to correlate and evaluate previous data, as well as to present new data, in order to determine areas in which more detailed work might be done most profitably. Tests at temperatures from the freezing point (419.46°C) to room temperature revealed glide only on basal planes in a close-packed direction (100)*, as reported by Mark, Polanyi, and Schmid6 and others. Markings probably similar to those observed by Kolesnikov7 and Boas and Schmid8 were noted in specimens stretched at elevated temperatures, but it seemed clear that these were not caused by prismatic or pyramidal slip (see second paragraph of section on Phenomena Involving Bending of the Basal Plane). Twinning Twinning on the octahedral plane of a face-centered cubic metal has been pictured as a process of simple homogeneous shearing along that plane in a [112] direction. It was recognized by Mathewson and Phillipsv and others""" that the (102) twinning of zinc required a somewhat more complex mechanism and might be considered as a homogeneous shearing of (102) planes in a [211] direction plus slight adjustments of atoms to positions of greater stability or lower energy, or as a single movement of each of the atoms in the same sense into the final positions. Gough and Cox" modified Mathewson's mechanism to obtain a more stable lattice configuration, but it is not clear that they succeeded, and their mechanism requires movement of some of the atoms in a sense opposite to that of the overall twinning movement. They also suggested that twinning may occur as a result of previous basal slip. This conclusion was based on the observation that twinning caused by alternating torsion was clearest and most profuse at positions for maximum basal slip rather than for maximum stress on (102) planes in the close-packed direction (not the twinning direction), and no mechanism was described. It might be wondered whether resolution of stresses on the twinning plane in the twinning direction would have afforded a simpler explanation. If twinning is essentially a simple homogeneous shearing along the twinning plane, it would seem that twins should grow by a smooth, continuous mechanism, and, indeed, that a simple reversal of stresses should reverse the shearing and de-twin the crystal. Cylindrical tablets 1/8 to 1/4 in. thick were cleaved from singlle-crystal specimens and were squeezed, perpendicular to a second-order prism plane, to give a tensile stress perpendicular to a first-order prism plane. A "click" was heard and a thin, needle-like twin appeared on the basal cleavage face. If squeezing was continued smoothly, the twin, viewed at magnifications up to X500, grew smoothly and quietly (fig. 1). X-ray examination verified that the twinning was of the (102) type. Rotating the compression axis 90" to reverse the stress then caused a smooth, continuous shrinkage and ultimate disappearance of the twin (fig. 2). The squeezing also caused a rumpling of the basal

Recently published data indicate that the water vapor content of a gas, as determined by dew point measurement, is inaccurate when the gas has been dehydrated with diethylene glycol. Water vapor contents and dew point measurements of gases dehydrated with triethylene glycol have been obtained in this investigation in order to determine the magnitude of a similar error, if one exists. Experimental data show a very low concentration of triethylene glycol vapor in gases dehydrated at atmospheric ternperatures and pressures ranging from 500 to 2,500 psia and that the accuracy of dew point measurements is not impaired by the presence of triethylene glycol vapor. INTRODUCTION Nearly all natural gas transported by pipe line to northern and eastern markets must be dehydrated to a low residual moisture content in order to assure maximum transmission efficiency and continuous delivery under peak load conditions. Without dehydration, water vapor often condenses in pipe lines in quantities sufficient to restrict the flow3 and. under low atmospheric temperature conditions, gas hydrates may form and plug gathering. transmission and distribution facilities. Gas may be dehydrated to pipe line specifications by a number of methods. The most widely used methods are (1) adsorption of water vapor on a solid dessicant such as activated bauxite, alumina or silica gel,' (2) by absorption of water vapor by either diethylene or triethylene glycol-water solutions of high glycol concentration,11,13 and (3) by simultaneous expansion-refrigeration of very high pressure gas in which gas hydrates are purposely formed and then quickly decomposed.'"" Of these three fundamental methods, the adsorption and absorption processes provide the bulk of the dehydrated gas moving to market at the present time. The expansion-refrigeration process. a relatively new development, is gaining in favor because of its simplicity but is sharply limited in its application by available differentials between source and gathering system pressures. Where gas sale or purchase contracts contain a maximum water vapor content specification, the water vapor content is usually determined by measuring the dew point of the gas at system pressure. Knowing he dew point temperature and the system pressure, the water vapor content of the gas is determined from a graphical correlation of saturation, or dew point, temperature us the water vapor content of the gas which is customarily expressed as pounds of water vapor per million cubic feet of gas measured at 14.7 psia and 60°F. Dew points are usually measured with the U. S. Bureau of Mines Dew Point Tester. shown in Fig. 1, which is well suited for use at temperatures lower than 120°F and at pressurei; ranging from atmospheric to 3,000 psi. A number of correlations of dew point temperatures vs water vapor content are available,3,5,15 the most recent of which is that by McCarthy et al.4 Where natural gas is dehydrated by absorhing contact with concentrated diethylene glycol-water solutions. considerable difficulty is experienced in observing water dew points due to condensation of liquid hydrocarbon and glycol films on the mirrored surface of the dew point tester. Riesenfeld and Frazierl2 report that the dew point method for determining the water vapor content of a dietllylene glycol-treated natural gas is in error due to the glycol content of the condensate formed on the tester mirror, and that the water vapor content of the gas tested is actually lower than that indicated by the standard' dew point-water vapor content correlation. Extensive experience in testing gases dehydrated by concentrated triethylene glycol-water solutions lias not revesled difficulties of the nature cited above for diethylene glycol. Without dehydration, water vapor often condenses in pipe lines in quantities sufficient to restrict the flow3 and. under low atmospheric temperature conditions, gas hydrates may form and plug gathering. transmission and distribution facilities. Gas may be dehydrated to pipe line specifications by a number of methods. The most widely used methods are (1) adsorption of water vapor on a solid dessicant such as activated bauxite, alumina or silica gel,' (2) by absorption of water vapor by either diethylene or triethylene glycol-water solutions of high glycol concentration,11,13 and (3) by simultaneous expansion-refrigeration of very high pressure gas in which gas hydrates are purposely formed and then quickly decomposed.'"" Of these three fundamental methods, the adsorption and absorption processes provide the bulk of the dehydrated gas moving to market at the present time. The expansion-refrigeration process. a relatively new development, is gaining in favor because of its simplicity but is sharply limited in its application by available differentials between source and gathering system pressures. Where gas sale or purchase contracts contain a maximum water vapor content specification, the water vapor content is usually determined by measuring the dew point of the gas at system pressure. Knowing he dew point temperature and the system pressure, the water vapor content of the gas is determined from a graphical correlation of saturation, or dew point, temperature us the water vapor content of the gas which is customarily expressed as pounds of water vapor per million cubic feet of gas measured at 14.7 psia and 60°F. Dew points are usually measured with the U. S. Bureau of Mines Dew Point Tester. shown in Fig. 1, which is well suited for use at temperatures lower than 120°F and at pressurei; ranging from atmospheric to 3,000 psi. A number of correlations of dew point temperatures vs water vapor content are available,3,5,15 the most recent of which is that by McCarthy et al.4 Where natural gas is dehydrated by absorhing contact with concentrated diethylene glycol-water solutions. considerable difficulty is experienced in observing water dew points due to condensation of liquid hydrocarbon and glycol films on the mirrored surface of the dew point tester. Riesenfeld and Frazierl2 report that the dew point method for determining the water vapor content of a dietllylene glycol-treated natural gas is in error due to the glycol content of the condensate formed on the tester mirror, and that the water vapor content of the gas tested is actually lower than that indicated by the standard' dew point-water vapor content correlation. Extensive experience in testing gases dehydrated by concentrated triethylene glycol-water solutions lias not revesled difficulties of the nature cited above for diethylene glycol.
