The indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in the past has created a serious fire hazard in the bush of the northern New South Wales coalfields. Spontaneous or bushfire-induced combustion in large neglected dumps of this material has increased in recent years causing a rise in air pollution. Surface methods of coal waste disposal are still being practised, and in many cases new material is being added to old dumps, many of which are burning. CSI RO has conducted research on methods of preventing and controlling fires in coal waste and recommends practical methods of overcoming these problems. Some laboratory and on-site investigations are described and the hazards of improperly constructed dumps are considered. The available techniques of fire prevention and control are discussed in relation to Australian conditions. Proposals for the safe and economical disposal of coal waste are outlined.

The depletion of easily mined high-grade ore bodies resulted in the industry having to exploit lower grade, complex resources (Albanese and McGagh, 2011; Darling, 2011; Randolph, 2011). The trend is now towards mining and processing of low-grade and complex ores (Darling, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variable geological and mineralogical characteristics, and complex mineralogy and texture can result in large variations in metallurgical response and also cause challenges in processing. (Carson, 1995; Lorenzen and Barnard, 2011; Yingling, 1990). Variability and the complex nature of ores are fundamental sources of risk that often cause the greatest economic impact (Dusci et al., 2007; Williams and Richardson, 2004). Hence it is important to effectively characterise these types of ore bodies and assess their processing performance (ie recovery, grade). To enable this, there is a need for the following: (i) characterisation of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical variability in the ore body; (ii) effective selection of drill core with characteristics that represent the range of ores in the entire ore body. Underground rock mechanics was initiated as a formal discipline in Australia by early studies for underground structures for the Snowy Mountains Scheme in the 1950s. These techniques were quickly embraced by underground mining and there has been steady development to the present time. The paper reviews the status of current techniques for rock mechanics studies and discusses some important issues such as ground support, mine filling and caving. It concludes that a considerable degree of engineering judgement is still required for the practical application of rock mechanics to underground mine design.

Mount Isa Mines Limited has been mining silver-lead-zinc ore at Isa Mine for 60 years. Mining methods have evolved continuously, and current production rates of 4.7 Mt/yr are obtained from a combination of sublevel open stopping, cut and fill, and benching methods. In the near future, orebodies mineable by open stoping will be gradually depleted, and the relatively new benching method will be further refmed to replace cut and fill methods wherever possible.

The South Australian mining regulatory framework has adopted a performance based approach to the management of risk. This approach has been in place in South Australia for more than 10 years and is increasingly being implemented in mining jurisdictions in Australia and around the world. Performance based regulation focuses on setting appropriate environmental outcomes to be achieved based on an assessment of the potential impacts associated with the development, operation and closure of mining projects. Measurable compliance criteria, including completion criteria, are set to demonstrate achievement of the outcomes. It is the responsibility of the proponent to propose designs and strategies that will achieve the regulated environmental outcomes and to demonstrate the implementation of their designs and strategies will achieve the outcomes into the future. Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) are significant elements of many major mines and each is unique with site specific factors such a materials to be stored, design, size, location, climate, sensitive receptors, operating history of the facility (i.e. changes to design), site culture and company capability amongst a range of other factors. Consequently a fit-for purpose approach is a key principle of best practice regulation of tailings management as it takes the site specific factors into account in setting appropriate outcomes for mitigating the identified impacts associated with a proposed development. Achievement of those outcomes through fit-for purpose, well designed management strategies would ensure safe, stable and economic storage of tailings in a manner that complies with all legislative requirements and presents negligible public health and safety risks. Tailings storage must also have acceptably low social and environmental impacts, both on and off site, during operation and indefinitely post closure. Achievement of environmental outcomes during operations and at mine completion can then be demonstrated to the regulator and community through public reporting of compliance with measurement criteria which establish the appropriate level of impact for each individual operation. A number of new mining proposals including tailings storage facilities (TSF) have recently been assessed and approved in South Australia. The location, size, design, sensitive receptors, public interest and therefore risk profiles of these TSF’s have varied substantially between these new mining proposals. These considerations were reflected in the assessment of the TSFs and the resulting mining lease conditions of approval including the environmental outcomes to be achieved over the life of the facilities. The continuously growing demand for rare earth elements (REEs), in combination with the crisis of 2009 and the price spike of 2011, has initiated a treasure hunt for rare earth deposits all over the world in recent years. Since then, commodity prices have declined and are now quite stable, yet the world is still dependent on China’s dominance of the market and its export policies. Exploration is unremitting and numerous resources of potential interest have already been revealed in many countries; however, proceeding to mining operations is not that simple, especially when it comes to the exploitation of rare earth deposits. Evaluating the feasibility of a mining project is always a unique, sensitive and rather complex process that depends on multiple criteria.This paper focuses on clarifying the present and future global situation in the development of respective deposits and on identifying rare earth-specific criteria that influence the overall feasibility assessments of any potential (especially underground) mining projects. Environmental impacts, legislation issues and the presence of radioactive pollutants are some of the notable boundary conditions that govern rare earth mining operations and need to be taken into consideration. Furthermore, the balance problem between the supply and demand of the different REEs can determine decisively whether a deposit of specific REEs is economically exploitable. For this reason, evaluations are made regarding the future strategies to be enacted in order for the rest of the world to detach itself from this situation. Flash flotation plays an integral role in many of the gold and sulfide mineral concentrators around the world, and yet despite this widespread use, very little information on this unit process is available in the published literature. For operations to maximise the performance of their flash flotation circuits, understanding how these cells operate, the nature of the particles they target and how to predict whether a flash flotation cell should be used on a specific ore type is of vital importance. This paper provides a summary of the key findings of a large flash flotation research project based in the operating environment of a refractory gold concentrator. The influence of key flotation performance criteria including gas dispersion, residence time and particle segregation within the cell will be discussed and recommendations for process improvements will be made throughout. The nature of the particles within the flash cell will be examined, as will the impact on the type of particles that are passed to downstream processes when the flash flotation cell is taken off-line. One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. Chemical admixtures are not commonly included in the variety of backfill mixes used in the mining industry. This may be attributed to several reasons including, but not limited to: the perceived high added cost, 2. the lack of awareness about their proper use, and 3. the lack of knowledge about their features and benefits. In the construction industry today, however, chemical admixtures are used in the majority of the concrete produced, enabling concrete to become a more cost-effective building material. They also enable construction crews to meet demands for year-round construction, quicker completion of construction projects, and improved concrete properties. The high demand for chemical admixtures in the construction industry has led to numerous innovations in admixture technology in recent years. Some of these chemical admixtures have been found to enhance the production, transport, placement, and in situ properties of backfill mixes. Others have been found to reduce the cost of such mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, their physical properties. In this paper, a few of such innovative admixture technologies are discussed. The benefits, imparted by these technologies to backfill mixes as well as performance data on their use in several backfill applications at various mines, are presented.

The manufacture of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is not only energy-intensive but also releases a significant volume of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. In addition, OPC in concrete often causes premature deterioration that affects the durability of concrete structures. This paper explores an alternative to OPC concrete called geopolymer concrete.The present research utilises low calcium (class F) fly ash as the source material to produce geopolymer concrete. Several factors that affect the mix design process such as mix proportion, curing time, and curing temperature have been studied. In addition, the long-term properties such as drying shrinkage, creep, and exposure to sulfate attack are also being investigated.The test data presented in this paper reveal that geopolymer concrete possesses high compressive strength, undergoes very little drying shrinkage and moderately low creep, and shows excellent resistance to sulfate attack. The result is extremely promising and demonstrates the sustainability of geopolymer concrete as a construction material for a sustainable future.

In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

Open pit operators are facing a number of challenges in the area of blasting and blasting processes, such as wall control, quality of fragmentation, explosives consumption and vibration. Remaining financially viable is one of the most significant objectives for mining professionals as they work through the blasting challenges within the mining chain of processes. This objective is such a significant challenge, primarily due to the high consumption of materials and the direct consequences on the downstream processes in the mining work flow, including loading, hauling, crushing, milling and mineral concentration. This paper reviews and discusses a technique to achieve this objective, namely air-decking. The performance in a number of mines around the world is reviewed focusing on the economic contributions of air-deck blasting. Various scenarios are investigated and simulated, covering both conventional and air-deck blasting, using JKSimblast software. The scenarios explore a range of issues and found that optimum results could be achieved with a minimum amount of explosives. The results obtained from the simulations were verified with blasts at Rixs Creek Coal Mine, Australia. Based on the verification results the simulations were then modified to more accurately model the actual conditions and parameters on site and to ensure that the models derived meet the production and control requirements at the mine site. Ultimately, overall analysis and comparisons were applied to the outcomes of the conventional and air-decking blasts revealing a reduction in material consumption of around 25 per cent with consequential savings and up to a 30 per cent reduction in ground vibration.CITATION:Abdalla, M A, Laing, T and Hagan, P, 2012. A custom-made set-up that measures bubble coalescence time and the thin film balance (TFB) technique were used to explore the role of residual xanthate (potassium amyl xanthate, PAX) and salt (NaCl) on the adsorption of two frothers (methyl isobutyl carbinol-MIBC, and di-propylene glycolDPG) at the air-water interface. This paper is primarily focused on the comparison of these two techniques in studying the interaction between the flotation reagents and salt emphasizing their capabilities and limits. The results from the coalescence rig showed that the presence of PAX improved the stability of bubbles in both frother solutions and led to a bubble coalescence inhibition at 50–500 ppm DPG. These measures were compared with the results from the TFB. Findings from the TFB were overall in good agreement with the bubble coalescence time, but a higher stability level was observed in thin films under the same condition. The effect of salt on the frother and PAX mixture was also explored, and the results showed an adverse impact of the salt on the interaction of frother and PAX with both techniques. However, variations were found between them in some cases. The TFB is much more sensitive to the presence of dissolved gas and oil droplets.

The need to recover metals from low grade deposits, old tailings, etc., combined with improvements in equipment design and the development of new extractants, has resulted in solvent extraction (SX) metal recovery reaching new importance (Webster & Ferron, 1993). The basic principle of solvent extraction is the use of an equilibrium system in which a metal ion is transferred from an aqueous phase into an organic phase, (Equation 1), (Ritcey, 1984). M + E ME . (1) The organic extractant (E) is usually specific for a certain metal ion (M) and forms a metal complex in the organic phase, leaving the impurities behind in the aqueous phase. To recover the metal, the equilibrium is reversed and the metal ion is transferred back from the organic to another aqueous phase in a process called stripping. The metal is then recovered from the aqueous strip solution, usually by electrowinning.

A recent survey of mineral processors undertaken as part of the International Mineral Processing Council (IMPC) Education Commission identified mineralogy as one of the key skills required for mineral processors (the other key areas being comminution, flotation, physical separation, sampling and extractive metallurgy). Past experience in a number of operations has shown what can be achieved when the data outputs from mineralogical tools are coupled with people with the right skills who can transform the data into actionable information. This paper reviews what has been done successfully in plant operations over a period of more than four decades and gives examples of a range of applications with both long and short-term objectives. The examples demonstrate the usefulness of mineralogical data – both basic and complex – in optimising mineral processing operations, whether the data are applied in a simple analysis or in more complex modelling. Similarly, the examples show the range of options available for operations to access the mineralogy information they need – through in-house experts and equipment based in centralised technology centres, through on-site equipment and experts or through external laboratories and consultants.The examples from industry highlight the huge potential benefit of including mineralogy as an integral part of operational best practice and raise the question of why more operations do not utilise what should be readily available data. Successful application of mineralogical data requires skilled people to generate relevant data of the required quality, together with skilled people to interpret the data (this may be the same person). And, as in any project, corporate recognition of the value of this approach to best practice is required to ensure continuing support. With fewer university courses providing courses in process mineralogy to undergraduate mineral processing engineers and chemical engineers, there is an increasing lack of knowledge about what mineralogical information is needed, how to get the required data and, equally importantly, how to turn the data into useful information.CITATION:Evans, C L and Wightman, E M, 2018. Due to increased production of steel in India, the thrust is now on iron ore producers not only to enhance productivity from existing mines, but to look also into alternative resources, like lean grade iron ores such as banded haematite quartz (BHQ)/banded haematite jasper (BHJ), which are available in abundance but not yet utilised for want of suitable process technology. In this context, BHJ ore from the Bellary-Hospet sector was collected and subjected to detailed physical, chemical and mineralogical characterisation and beneficiation studies. The as-received sample was found to occur physically as alternating layers of haematite and jasper. The chemical analysis of the sample was 41.20 per cent Fe, 39.10 per cent SiO2 and 0.86 per cent Al2O3. Based on the mineralogical observation, haematite was found to be the lone ore mineral and jasper was the major gangue mineral. The microscopic observations revealed that the ore minerals liberate at a top size of 0.150 mm. Guided by the characterisation results, indicative tests were conducted using gravity and magnetic separation equipment, namely, Floatex«, gravity slime table and wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The results indicate that it is possible to upgrade the sample by both gravity and magnetic separation techniques. However, the WHIMS results indicate that jasper grains report to the concentrate at higher gauss intensities. Therefore, based on the encouraging gravity separation results and the availability of new design spirals for treating fine particles, the applicability of gravity spirals for beneficiating BHJ in the liberation size range of -0.150 mm was studied. The sample was ground to a top size of 0.150 mm and was subjected to preconcentration using wash waterless spirals. Tests were conducted at different feed rates, pulp densities and splitter positions. The results indicate that it is possible to upgrade the sample from a feed grade of 41.20 per cent Fe to a preconcentrate ranging from 46 per cent to 62 per cent Fe with a yield ranging from 19 per cent to 55 per cent. The obtained preconcentrate was then subjected to a cleaning stage by using a combination of wash water and wash waterless spirals. The test results indicate that it is possible to obtain a final concentrate assaying 65.75 per cent Fe and 4.75 per cent SiO2 with a yield of 25.9 per cent and an iron recovery of 41.31 per cent. It was concluded that further test work is necessary to increase the recovery and improve the product specification.

The benefits of fine size separation in magnetite concentration are detailed focusing on published research from various iron ore producers. Basic principles of fine sizing and advancements in screening technology are addressed. A chronological review of research is used to show the evolution of fine sizing applications in the industry, starting with studies that demonstrated the benefit of using fine screens to produce consistent lower silica concentrates, followed by improvements in fine sizing equipment that have made effi cient screen classification in ball mill circuits practical. Case studies are used to demonstrate how positive sizing with screens can be used to significantly shift concentrate ‘grind/grade’ relationships.

The Hauraki Goldfield consists of a large number of volcanic-associated epithermal gold deposits within the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), North Island , New Zealand; it is the most accessible and most studied of the Southwest Pacific gold regions. The deposits occur generally as steeply dipping quartz veins and breccia sheets in faults and fractures.From a tectonic perspective, the CVZ is generally considered a Neogene convergent volcanic arc constructed under an extensional tectonic regime; the common tectonic setting for epithermal mineralisation. The gold deposits are mostly hosted in subaerial andesitic arc-type volcanic rocks. Temporally, however, mineralisation is associated with rhyolitic rocks of a bimodal volcanic suite that may represent a back-arc environment. Rifting and calderas may be important components of the latter regime, but this is not yet clear; the general structural framework controlling the location of CVZ gold deposits remains poorly understood. In all electrolytic zinc plants cadmium is removed as an impurity prior to the zinc electrowinning stage of the process. Cadmium metal is the favoured form of this by-product and most plants use an electrolytic route for its production. The formation of dendrites in cadmium electrowinning processes is the major limitation to deposition rates. There is an economic incentive, therefore, to better understand the factors affecting their growth. A technique that has been used by others to examine fundamental aspects of dendrite growth has been applied to industrial strength electrolytes. It involves potentiostatic deposition in a cell containing the electrolyte of interest. The variation in the current with time at a given overpotential allows the determination of the dendritic growth induction time. A method was developed (the Locus method) from the investigation of a set of such potentiostatic curves, obtained over a range of applied overpotentials, that appears to give a measure of electrolyte quality with respect to dendritic growth in galvanostatic deposition. The Locus technique predicts that zinc at industrial concentrations in cadmium electrolytes should have a significant effect on morphology and that deterioration of morphology will occur as the zinc concentration in the electrolyte is increased. This effect is consistent with literature prediction and was shown to relate to a reduction of the diffusion limiting current density. Magnafloc R333 is used as an additive at Pasminco Metals-EZ to control the morphology of cadmium deposits and the Locus method was successful in predicting its dendrite inhibiting properties. A possible mechanism is discussed. This work has opened avenues for future research with respect to a technique that may have an industrial application in electrolyte characterisation and has pointed to a direction in which better understanding of galvanostatic dendritic growth may be found.
