A modern mine winding installation is an integrated system and its design requires a multidisciplinary approach including expertise in the-materials handling, mining, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical and control engineering fields. The paper-sets out the elements of typical mine wind- ing systems-and describes some of the more important decisions which must be made during the planning and design process, It is no longer.adequate to. base the choice of a system on the pre- ferences and experiences of individuals. The first difficulty encount.ered in preparing this paper was to find a definition of the word "special" as applied to steel. The first thought is "obviously any grade not mild steel" but this is an over-simplification, because the term "mild steel" covers a series of carbon ranges, each found from experience to be especially suited to the production of a particular rolled section.Even if the Australian structural mild steels are excluded it is found that no part of the plant here is independent of special steel.The face-man on Iron Monarch makes his bench safe by barring down with a 0.6% carbon steel bar. He bores a hole into the ironstone with a 0.75-0.8% carbon steel drill, driven by a jackhammer which is built of a variety of special steels. After it is shot down, the stone is lifted by an electric shovel, very few of whose steel components fall into the general category of structural grades of mild steel.Further special steels are met with in the truck into which the stone is loaded, the hauling electric locomotive, and the rails on which these .run. Even the permanent way uses more than one grade, e.g., the crossings experiencing heavy service have their frogs built with austenitic manganese steel inserts.Special steels play their part in the overhead crane which tips these trucks, and in the crushers into which they discharge, and so they can be followed right through the production line, and they are still there at the seaward end of the ship loading boom at the head of the WhyalIa ore jetty.

Mukuk gold mine in South Korea produces a pyrite concentrate containing gold associated with arsenopyrite as a gangue mineral. The effects of Portland cement as a depressant on the flotability of arsenopyrite were studied to improve the separation of arsenopyrite from pyrite concentrate containing gold. A series of the fundamental flotation tests were performed using Portland cement as a function of pH and concentration of the collector. Flotation recovery of pyrite and arsenopyrite in the fundamental tests with amyl xanthate showed that arsenopyrite was depressed by the addition of a moderate amount of Portland cement, but pyrite was not depressed by it. In the flotation tests of the artificial mixture samples with arsenopyrite and pyrite, following pH were adjusted to be 10.5 by Portland cement, different amount of amyl xanthate was added. The results from these studies showed that flotation recovery of pyrite was 100 per cent under the condition of some addition of amyl xanthate, but arsenopyrite was not floating at all. Portland cement shows remarkable depression of galena, but its effect on the flotability of chalcopyrite is not as clear. In the pulp under Portland cement addition, chalcopyrite can be easily activated by the addition of sodium bisulphite, whereas galena is depressed more effectively. From the batch flotation tests with the pyrite concentrate, the galena concentrate and the Cu-Pb bulk concentrate from the mines, it was confirmed that the results of the batch flotation tests agree with the results of the fundamental flotation tests. The effects of depression by Portland cement on pyrrhotite, marmatite and stibnite are also discussed briefly.

Recent advances in global positioning systems (GPS), machine guidance technology and telemetry allow an unprecedented level of control of surface mining operations. GPS technology can now locate the bucket of a shovel or the blade of a dozer within 50 mm. Some of the outcomes possible are: precise selective mining û even when the ore is visually indistinguishable from waste; tracking grade and tonnage of every ore parcel through the mine; real time productivity monitoring; detailed post accident safety analysis; and tracking the movements of every piece of equipment. This paper will consider the contribution that GPS based machine control systems can make to ensuring that surface mining projects deliver the outcomes promised in the feasibility studies. Case studies of installations are presented.

Every estimate of ore reserves necessarily contains an assumption in regard to the specific gravity of the ore. This assumed figure may be based on experimental data, on textbook data, or on a reconciliation of past tonnage estimates and production figures. Not infrequently it is simply a guess - shrewd or otherwise.Errors in the density factor are not likely to be serious in gold-quartz mines-or, at least, not so serious as in base metal mines. It is to the closer determination of ore density in the latter that this paper is devoted. Moreover, the remarks apply to ores which show no appreciable pore space.Not many ore bodies are sufficiently homogeneous to allow of a truly representative factor being obtained by the simple testing of a few specimens of ore, or by the weighing, after breaking, of a carefully measured block. The empirical figure derived from a comparison of past ore reserves and actual production can never truly describe conditions other than those now past; no real link with ore as yet unmined is provided. The dilution of heavy ore by waste is not exposed by this method, but is effectively cloaked. Anyerrors in past estimations of ore reserves are transmitted, by way of the density factor, as a source of error in all future estimates.ObjectIons may be raised to the practice of weighing measured blocks of ore in the case of any but a very homogeneous ore body. Even then, the exact composition of the block weighed, and an indication of whether its moisture content is representative of the whole, are difficult to determine.

Electrochemical investigations of the flotation of sulphide minerals are re- viewed. Flotation with thiol collectors is interpreted in terms of a "mixed poten- tial" model in which the process leading to hydrophobicity is the anodic oxidation of the collector at the mineral surface and this is driven by the cathodic reduc- tion of oxygen. Electrochemical studies have identified the products of anodic oxidation as chemisorbed collector, metal collector compounds, and dithiolates; the products formed in each situation depend on the collector used, the mineral under study, and the pretreatment of the mineral surface. Investigations on galena, pyrite, and chalcocite are discussed. Electrochemical and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies have been used to determine the products of surface oxi- dation of sulphide minerals in order to elucidate the mechanism of collectorless flotation. The mixed potential mechanism allows consideration to be made of the ways in which flotation of sulphides with thiols can be inhibited. Examples of depressant action are presented. The relevance of electrochemical investi- gations to practical flotation is Discussed.

æMine to MillÆ improvement involves optimising the chain of rock breakage processes from the in situ rock in the mine to the output of the concentrator. A growing number of paper studies and case histories from metalliferous mines (AusIMM, 1998; JKMRC, 1998; Clark and Scott, 2002) demonstrate that generating more breakage in the pit and the primary crusher can lead to benefits to milling that result in significant improvements to the economic performance of a mining project. However, unless the ævalueÆ of doing this (benefit over cost?) can be appropriately quantified, the approach cannot be effectively managed and the increases in blasting and monitoring costs cannot be justified.Mining operations have traditionally been organised into the separate departments of geology, mining and processing based on the specialist skills required and the different professional disciplines involved. Process optimisation across these boundaries has commonly been frustrated by management requirements to minimise the costs incurred by each department without adequate reference to the ævalueÆ being created. Companies have tended to discard positions that provide a technical over-view of the value chain, reducing the number of people with the opportunity to influence practices across these process boundaries.This paper discusses these issues and identifies measures required to quantify and manage the ævalueÆ provided by æMine to MillÆ improvement generated by the intense blasting of ore.

During 2002, design and development of the worldÆs largest flotation cell was completed. The cell is the mineral industryÆs first 257 m3 flotation cell, and represents a major development in the design of larger flotation cells, with a 50 per cent increase in cell volume over the widely installed 160 m3 WEMCO« SmartCellTM flotation machine. It is anticipated, in the next few years, world-class copper sulfide concentrators will incorporate 257 m3 flotation cells in their rougher-scavenger flotation circuits. The prototype 257 m3 cell, No 250 SmartCellTM flotation machine is installed in Minera Los PelambresÆ existing rougher flotation circuit. The machine is located in front of the first cell in Row 1 and is followed by nine No 130 SmartCellTM flotation cells. The unit has been in operation since April 2004, and has proven itself in this duty. A key to the successful development of the equipment has been the emphasis placed on fundamental hydrodynamic scale-up criteria. Hydrodynamic factors include superficial gas velocity, water (pulp) circulation through the draft tube, and pulp mixing (distribution) characteristics. This paper will review the scale-up criteria of the No 250 flotation cell, and a case study will be presented on the in-plant testing of the equipment. The case study will document the metallurgical and hydrodynamic performance of the machine. It will also illustrate the economic benefits derived by incorporating larger flotation cells in a modern copper sulfide concentrator.

Australis Mining N.L. operates a continuous mode carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold plant, processing sand and slime tailings from previous gold mining operations in the Norseman area. Plant design is that of conventional countercurrent contact between pregnant pulp and activated carbon. Gold desorption is achieved by the Zadra process using near boiling tempera- tures and atmospheric pressure. Process water is drawn from nearby Lake Cowan (saline). The plant operates at, or above, design specification of 400 dry tonnes per day. This paper describes the plant design and operating processes utilised in optimising throughput and gold recovery. TNTDnPTTnmTnM Favourable world gold prices and substantial reserves of sand and slime tailings prompted Australis Mining N.L. to construct a gold extraction plant during 1981. The projected plant throughput was set so as to complete treatment of available tailings over a three year period. Metal- lurgical tests indicated that, with a regrind facility satisfactory gold recovery could be achieved using a countercurrent CIP process. Reflecting the entry of Australis Mining N.L. into its first large scale treatment operation, the plant design emphasised simplicity but effectiveness of Operation.

Detailed studies of mineral paragenesis, isotope and trace-element geochemistry, and physical mineralogy at Mount Morgan are compatible with deductions by Geopeko Ltd geologists concerning field relationships in the mine area. Considered together, field and laboratory data suggest that the Mount Morgan deposit originated from a shallow, intrusive, acid volcanic dome similar to those which produced the Kuroko-type deposits in Japan. At Mount Morgan, however, interaction with sea water was much less, the sulphides were concentrated rather than forming a group of deposits, and only the throat of a breccia vent is pre- served, so that only the lowermost parts of Kuroko-type deposits can be compared with the Mount Morgan mine. A final difference lies in the presence at Mount Morgan of a quartz diorite adjacent to the ore. Mineralogical data are compatible with post-ore intrusion, possibly up an earlier volcanic fissure.

THE MORWELL BROWN COAL DEPOSITSTHIS deposits of brown coal in the neighbourhood of Morwell, are of tertiary age, and are represented on several horizons, but, owing to lack of evidence, the exact age cannot be fixed definitely. It is chiefly by reference to the basalt flows of the Older Volcanic series that the brown coal beds have been classified as of Pre-Volcanic and of Post-Volcanic age. The Pre-Volcanic brown coals are less widely distributed, and the seams generally are thin, though near Thorpdale a thickness of 40 tt. has been recorded, and from 10 ft. to 12 ft. in the vicinity of Narracan. Both of these localities lie to the south-west of Yallourn, and it has not been proven as yet whether these older coals and accompanying basaltic flows pass under the Morwell beds.The brown coal deposits have accumulated in an area where extensive faulting in early tertiary times has taken place with oscillations of elevation and depression of the land surface. In the vicinity of Yallourn, Paheozoic strata (probably Silurian) are exposed on either bank of the Latrobe River about a mile above the powerhouse weir, where the river flows through steep banks rising a couple of hundred feet on either side. The Silurian strata are highly inclined, and consist mostly of slates and Illudstones. Resting unconformably on the upturned edges of the Silurian is a conglomerate bed of Mesozoic age, above which occur beds clipping to the south-east of felspathic sandstones, with alternating mudstones at times carbonaceous, and containing thin seams of black coal.The brown coal seams and associated lignitic Clays, sands, gravels, etc, rest on the Mesozoic strata (as proved in the vicinity of the power-house and by boring north of the Latrobe River, near the old open cut), but do not appear on the surface of the Mesozoic, where these beds attain an altitude of more than 50 ft. above the present level of the Latrobe River.Half a mile upstream from the power-house a layer of basalt of the Older Volcanic series, almost resting upon the Silurian strata, is...

On 20 December 1983 at 8.40am blast- hole 57 of Blast RN177 prematurely detonated follwed by a violent deflagration of blast- hole 59 at 10.40am. The blastholes were 380mm diameter drilled in black pyritic Mt McRae shale. The blastholes were loaded with ANFO and primed. Blasthole 57 was stemmed and blasthole 59 was not. A poss- ible mechanism which could lead to such a detonation is described. preliminary tests showed the top 5m of a bench had the highest temperature which could not be influenced by a range of treat -ments. Small scale laboratory tests show- ed that zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium carbonate (Mg2CO3) inhibited the reaction. A series of tests using AN with and without inhibitors loaded into the collars of blast -holes drilled in the top 6m of the bench and unstemmed is described. An analysis of the time to reaction of the holes loaded with AN against temperature shows that the decomposition of the AN in contact with the black pyritic shale is probably a sulphuric acid catalysed react- ion. All the inhibitors tested can neut- ralise the sulphuric acid in the shale. 10% ZnO appears to be an effective inhibitor of the reaction providing the AN/ZnO (90/10) is kept out of contact with surface material whose temperature can be as high as 60¦C in summer. It is concluded that ANFO/ZnO (90/ 10) should be now tested in stemmed holes.

THERE is available a considerable amount of literature concerning the practice, and, to a smaller extent, the theory of ventilation as it applies to coal mines. Publications considering the subject of ventilation of metal mines from a practical viewpoint are much less numerous, whilst the treatment of the theoretical aspect of the question (except in so far as is common to coal mining) appears to have been almost neglected. This may be due to one of two causes (a) That in many metal mines (especially those which have not attained a great depth), on account of the greater number of connections with the surface, as compared with coal mines, natural ventilation has sufficed.(b) That in metal mines where the foregoing is not the case the solution of the ventilation problem from theoretical considerations has been regarded as involving so many complications that any attempt at the determination of a set of concrete ventilation figures applying to and throughout the mine would be futile. Whilst it is freely admitted that the difficulties inherent in the application of theory to the ventilation of metal mines are numerous, it must also be admitted that few attempts have been made to overcome them. The ultimate aim, of course, would be the collection of sufficient data to enable the probable behaviour of the air-currents throughout the whole of the workings of any mine to be accurately predicted under any particular set of circumstances. A total of 12 alkalic porphyry centres of Late Ordovician age have been discovered in two mineral districts within NSW. The alkalic porphyry deposits are hosted within shoshonitic volcanic centres that formed where a major cross-arc basement structure (the Lachlan Transverse Zone) cut the Ordovician Macquarie Arc. The Macquarie Arc was amalgamated with the back-arc basin sediments of the Wagga Marginal Basin and with the proto-Pacific margin of Gondwanaland to form the Lachlan Fold Belt after the cessation of arc magmatism in the Late Ordovician. Within the Ordovician volcanic belts of NSW, the alkalic porphyries are the most significant mineral deposits economically. The combined resource of the Cadia district porphyries (729 Mt @ 0.79 g/t Au and 0.30 per cent Cu) makes Cadia the worldÆs seventh largest known porphyry gold system and the largest known gold resource in an alkalic porphyry system (574 t Au). Hydrothermal alteration in the alkalic porphyries comprises a complex sequence of potassic, calc-potassic, sodic, calc-sodic, propylitic and late-stage, typically fault-controlled phyllic assemblages. Hematite dusting is common in many of these alteration assemblages, giving the intrusions and the altered volcano-sedimentary host sequences a distinctive pink-orange colouration. Intensely developed hydrothermal alteration assemblages are localised to within a few hundred metres of the composite intrusions that sourced the mineralising fluids, making these deposits difficult exploration targets. Sulfides are typically zoned, with several of the deposits having bornite-rich cores, chalcopyrite-dominant annuluses and pyritic outer haloes. Gold is well correlated with bornite in most of the deposits, and with chalcopyrite at Cadia Hill.

The Mount Lyell Company's concentrating mill is situated about a quarter of a mile westward of the portal of the North Lyell tunnel, which serves the North Lyell, Royal Tharsis and Crown Lyell mines, being on the 1100-ft. level of the first named. The Comstock mine is connected with the tram system at this level by five and a half miles of steam tramway, two-foot gauge being standard throughout.The plant is well placed with regard to all essential services and has an excellent water-supply from a series of three dams on the West Queen river.MILLING ORESThe mill feed is a mixture of the outputs from the foUr mines mentioned, each of which has its characteristic ore, but, generally speaking, about half of the ore consists of siliceous schists and the other half of hard grey quartzite. The schisty ores are easy to crush, but, on grinding, while the schist slimes readily, the quartz granules are hard, resulting in the handling of heavy loads on the secondary classifiers. The quartzite ores are both hard to crush and difficultto grind.The principal sulphide materials are bornite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite, chalcopyrite being the main copper-bearing mineral.The crystallization is coarse in the schisty ores, but it has been shown that even the 200 mesh (Tyler) material contains included sulphide particles. At the present time the sizing of the final tailing averages 80% through 200 mesh.

The successful processing of arsenopyritic ores is difficult and will be facilitated by a better understanding of the mineralogy of gold within arsenopyrite and the type of arsenopyrite in which gold is taken up. Solid solution gold in arsenopyrite is now well documented, and is a significant cause of refractory behaviour in gold processing. Investigations of the crystal structure and stoichiometry of arsenopyrite by X-ray diffraction, electron microprobe analysis and convergent beam electron microscopy have been carried out in order to understand how the gold is incorporated into the structure. Variations in stoichiometry, particularly the As:S ratio, of arsenopyrite leads to variations in structural parameters. These variations result in slight changes in thermal behaviour. The distribution of invisible gold in an arsenopyrite grain is generally non-uniform and synthesised samples contain up to 2 wt per cent gold. A transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique called ALCHEMI is being used to identify the substitution site. The process of gold agglomeration together with evidence of an ordered breakdown of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite has been documented with the use of TEM. An arsenopyrite grain containing invisible gold was heated with an electron beam resulting in recrystallisation of arsenopyrite to pyrrhotite with arsenic being expelled. The gold is mostly insoluble in the pyrrhotite lattice and therefore exsolves out and combines with other gold atoms to form droplets at the boundary of the pyrrhotite.

Mine to mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian mining industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in Northern Queensland, Australia, has espoused the mine-to-mill concept and is actively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROM stockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken between Ernest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives to optimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance of individual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimise fragmentation or the downstream processes. These include such specialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, and POWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As important are the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers, measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and a high speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design -only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as the understanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting in reduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution.
