"For its end of life, Kemess Mine processed its difficult-to-treat hypogene ore from the east pit, which is a lower grade copper and higher pyrite content gold ore. Metallurgical testwork showed that improvement was possible with finer grinding. In July 2010, small grinding media were introduced into the regrind mill resulting to a nearly 50% decrease of the power draw with a finer grind, an increase of 1.1% in the final copper grade, an increase of 1.2% in copper and 2.9% in gold recoveries at the cleaners. The overall recoveries of copper and gold increased by 0.6% and 1.3% respectively.INTRODUCTION Kemess Mine was located at 430 km North West of Prince George in North Central British Colombia. Its production started in May 1998 by Royal Oak Mines and was acquired by Northgate Exploration in 2000. Kemess reached its end of life production with its last of production on March 9th, 2011. The concentrator nominal capacity was 56,000 TPD consisting of a primary gyratory crusher feeding two identical conventional SAB circuits totalizing 35,840 kW available for grinding. Rougher flotation consists of four parallel rows of eight 130 m³ tank cells to produce a concentrate of 2% Cu and 6 gr/t Au which was pumped to a 5 m x 10.8 m regrind ball mill. The regrind installed power was 4,480 kW to generate a final grind of 80% passing 40 microns. This product fed the two stage cleaner flotation circuit, first stage being two parallel rows conventional 17 m³ Denver cells and second stage, two 3.3 m x 11.0 m flotation columns in series, designed and constructed by Kemess, to produce a 22% copper concentrate grade. The cleaner flotation middlings were returned back to the regrind mill (Froehling, Mohns, Roman & Grady, 2005; Froehling, Mohns, Rajwani & Fullam, 2007). The large copper-gold porphyry deposit was composed of 15% of oxidized supergene and leach cap ore and 85% of hypogene ore having three major alteration zones, mainly characterized by their sulphur/sulphide content. Chalcopyrite is the main copper mineral species with minor bornite. Gold was mainly present as free gold or electrum. The first alteration zone consisted of a phyllic alteration characterized by moderate and intense sericite alteration which had the highest mill throughput and twice the mine grade when in contact with the supergene horizon. The second zone consisted of a potassic alteration characterized by more competent groundmass and moderate to intense quartz stockwork which had a slightly lower mill throughput. Finally, a third alteration found beneath and on the east side of the deposit having almost no quartz stockwork and hardened groundmass, sulphide content is two to four times more. This zone had the lower mill throughput with significant drop in the mine average gold and copper grade. Through its mine life, the average life of mine copper head grade was 0.21% Cu and 0.64 gr/t Au. Head grades began to decrease from 2008 to be substantially lower in 2011 as shown in Table 1."

"INTRODUCTIONMagnetic mill linings have been developed from an invention by Mr. Bertil Brandt, the originator of the Skega rubber lining. The OREBED magnetic mill lining is a concept in which rubber covered strontium ferrite permanent magnets are arranged on the inside wall of a mill shell so that they attract magnetically susceptible material be it ore, media or tramp, to form a protective layer over the magnets and to serve as an operating surface with indefinite life.Noranda Mines Ltd. through its associate Norcast Division of Noranda Metal Industries formed a joint venture with the inventors to market magnetic mill linings in North America. For the past twelve months trials have been undertaken in conjunction with Orebed Inc. to test and develop these linings for grinding mill applications at the Horne Concentrator. Two independent milling circuits are currently being operated, one treating a siliceous gold ore and the other a copper slag.This paper presents the results of the magnetic lining test programme to date."

"Two analysis tools which have been applied to problems in industrial flotation processes are the application of kinetics and detailed mineralogical or liberation data, both on a size-by-size basis. This paper describes practical examples of the application of kineticsto examination of the entrainment recovery mechanism, the retardation of valuable minerals at the commencement of flotation sections and the resolution of problems related to valuable species with reduced rate constants at the end of sections. Examples of the usefulness of size-by-size liberation data for monthly composite samples of products from a concentrator are also described.IntroductionMuch of the published industrial flotation data on the behaviour of minerals in various size fractions have been obtained from specially conducted surveys with a duration of several hours. Such data are very valuable and provide a record of the behaviour of the entire flotation plant or sections during the interval of the survey. Some examples from the literature can be cited Cameron et al. (1971), Lynch et al. (1981), Frew (1982). Less attention has been given to the value of complementary sized data derived from compositing shift or daily inventory samples over an interval of one or several weeks with repetition of the procedure at the completion of each interval. Mineralogical point count data of the size fractions of such samples and data interpretation are rare in the literature.Kinetic data on the behaviour of valuable and gangue minerals in various size fractions have been reported often for flotation banks. In the experience 0 f the writer, there has been a tendency among operating metallurgists to ascribe problems in the flotation process to rate constant values for gangue minerals which were believed to be unsatisfactorily high. Less attention has been paid to the value for the rate constant for the valuable mineral over the length of a particular bank.Examples of the types of data which were mentioned previously have been obtained from the lead-zinc concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The various types of data have been collected to evaluate their worth in order to provide relevant information for both research and operational aspects of the plant."

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. "In most mineral processing operations the term audit is usually reserved for the exercise of checking financial records and/ or safety practices. While these activities are time consuming, no one disputes their necessity or value. If we subject these areas to such careful scrutiny, why is it that we don't normally apply the same principles to critically examine process operation. After all, the operating efficiency of the plant impacts directly on the measures of profitability.A mineral processing plant is a complex system that has a number of distinct, but mutually dependent elements: process equipment, instrumentation, operating policies, maintenance policies, control strategies and people. To ensure maximum economic performance, in the dynamic environment that characterizes a concentrator, requires a periodic review of each of these areas. However, to be useful, the study must be based on sound metallurgical principles and be conducted in a highly focused manner. Experience teaches us that the exercise is very revealing and potentially very rewarding.This paper will discuss the process audit process and illustrate its potential value through illustration taken from plant studies.IntroductionThe last twenty years have seen tremendous technological and organizational changes sweep the minerals industry. Process control systems, on-stream analyzers, and gold recovery techniques barely conceived twenty years ago are now incorporated in virtually all new installations in an effort to maximize operating efficiencies. In conjunction with these developments, changes in the way plants are managed, down-sizing of technical staff, reduction in the size of operating crews, and the flattening out of the management structure have significantly reduced operating costs. "Abstract - The early Paleozoic accretionary tectonic regime that was established along the Laurentian margin of the Newfoundland Appalachians provided a favorable setting for shear-hosted gold mineralization along a major terrane suture, the Baie Verte-Brompton Line. The Stog’er Tight prospect is one of several mesothermal-style gold occurrences hosted by shear zones within accreted ophiolites and oceanic arc terranes on the Baie Verte Peninsula. It is an epigenetic, stratabound deposit that is confined to shallow-level gabbro sills within the volcanic cover sequence of the allochthonous Point Rousse ophiolite complex. Gold mineralization at Stog’er Tight is associated with hydrothermal mineral assemblages represented by chlorite-calcite, sericite-ankerite, red albitepyrite (±Au) and chlorite-magnetite alteration zones. Gold occurs with pyrite within the intensely altered gabbro, along the margins of syn- to late-shear, quartz-rich, replacement veins.The Stog’er Tight gabbro served as a rigid body conducive to shear deformation and fluid penetration, whereas, its high Fe-Ti oxide content induced fluid oxidation and gold-pyrite precipitation. Hydrothermal alteration involved progressive CO2, S, Na, and LILE metasomatism, along with significant enrichments in the REE, HFSE, and Th in the high-grade ore zone. Temperatures of vein formation and alteration are constrained by oxygen isotope thermometry to be between 250°C and 480°C. Isotopic compositions of vein quartz from the Stog’er Tight prospect are uniform (??O = +12.5 ± 1‰) and fall within the range cited for many shear-hosted, auriferous quartz veins.A U-Pb zircon igneous age of 483 +3/-2 Ma for the Stog’er Tight gabbro is consistent with its stratigraphic correlation with other Ordovician ophiolitic and volcanic arc/back-arc assemblages in Newfoundland. The U-Pb age of a rare variety of hydrothermal zircon recovered from the high-grade ore zone directly constrains the timing of gold mineralization to 420 ±5 Ma, in accord with a major orogenic episode of Silurian age that produced many of the magmatic and metamorphic rock suites in north-central Newfoundland. Our results are consistent with a post-peak metamorphic, late-magmatic model for gold mineralization that occurred during the waning stages of Silurian orogenesis, driven by emplacement of I-type granitoid intrusions into the crust."

Conversion of hydraulic equipment to fire resistant fluids has been hampered by less than satisfactory component performance and in some cases, catastrophic equipment failure. Concern over identifying possible causes to these problems led to a joint research project between the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited and the University of Saskatchewan. This paper summarizes some of the results and conclusions derived from this joint project. In this study, the research was limited to evaluating the effects of potash contamination on the performance of hydraulic equipment. Two separate types of tests were conducted in order to provide a basis upon which trends could be established. This study concluded that the presence of potash dust in the hydraulic fluid can induce severe wear over relatively short periods of time. It was also deduced that a contaminant free fluid combined with proper fluid maintenance could extend the performance of hydraulic components using fire resistant fluids even under very severe operating conditions, such as elevated pressures and temperatures. Recommendations as to how to achieve this goal and the practicality of doing so are presented.

Remote and isolated, located in a frigid, hostile environment, the Black Angel mine in Greenland had to create a warm social environment which would help attract and retain a stable work force of miners and support staff. The high cost of personnel turnover plagues many mines and, when the mine is inside the Arctic Circle, accessible by helicopters which are highly vulnerable to unpredictable weather conditions during the long, dark winters, the potential costs of personnel turnover become critical factors in the success or failure of the mining venture. Manpower planning should start from the date the engineers begin the technical design of the new mine. The plan should include provisions not only to ensure an adequate, skilled work force, but also to ensure a stable work force of people who are happy enough in the mining environment to want to remain, take their vacation and return to work at the mine. The skilled work force was assured with training courses of four months, designed to produce highly specialized underground workers from unskilled Danes and Greenlanders supported by trained Swedish and other Scandinavian miners. The stable social unit was assured by plans the primary attribute of which had to be flexibility. The accommodation changed from shared accommodation with communal washroom facilities to single accommodation with private washroom facilities. A recreational director was hired to help the workers make use of elaborate recreational facilities. A closed-circuit TV and radio system was installed to operate as a private broadcasting system using taped programs originally broadcast on European TV networks or developed by the mine personnel themselves. The liquor rules were changed and the mine manager became a licensed innkeeper responsible for the orderly operation of the Black Angel Bar in accordance with the Danish laws governing the services of a public bar. The result is a relatively stable work force. Some 35% of the people have more than two years' service with the company, Greenex A/S, and some 62% complete 10 months of service.

On October 16, 1978, the Harnback open cut of Rheinische Braunkohlenwerke, the largest open cut ever planned, was officially put into operation. It will outperform all of the large open cuts known at present, both in its dimensions and in its annual output of overburden and coal. Present plans are to commence coal mining in 1983, although target production will only be achieved in 1995when the annual output will be 50 million tons of coal. Considering an overburden: coal ratio of 6: 1, this will involve the removal of approximately 300 million bank cubic metres of overburden. For overburden removal and coal mining, this open cut will use bucket-wheel excavators exclusively. It is planned to employ eight excavators with a daily output of 240,000 bank cubic metres each (Fig. 1). The transport of the overburden and coal to the dump and the power station, respectively, will be effected by 30Q0-mm-wide conveyors, running at a speed of 6 m/sec. The overburden will be dumped by spreaders having a boom length of 100 m, capable of dumping 240,000 bank cubic metres per day (Fig. 2). Such giants, of course, can only be used for extreme conditions . Their employment indicates that huge quantities of material can be handled economically for long periods. However, the use of bucket-wheel excavators is economic when daily outputs of 5,000 bank cubic metres are involved, in particular if direct backcasting of the overburden is not possible.

"This paper will describe how cultivator shanks are made in one company and how the manufacturing was studied with a view to increasing product consistency and reducing manufacturing cost. The product: which is used extensively in the agriculture industry, was analyzed to determine which geometric parameters optimized its design and whether there was justification for the great variety of styles and shapes that are available in the market. Finally, an extensive series of field trials were undertaken which showed that it is advantageous to the manufacturer to be better aware of the loads and forces that his product is subjected to by another industry.IntroductionStelco maintains a Research Group for its Western Region operations headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. Because of the small staff, a location that is isolated with respect to its Burlington, Ontario centre and a diverse set of processes and products, a university relationship has developed which may be different from that which would be developed at a larger integrated Steel Works. This paper outlines the type of cooperative studies carried out by Stelco Inc. in Edmonton and the University of Alberta. .To meet the research needs covering a wide variety of steelmaking processes and steel products produced in Edmonton would require more staff and equipment than the sales volume in the West justifies. The gap is filled by cooperation with university personnel. This cooperation has provided these benefits to Stelco Inc.:• access to specialized test equipment and a trained staff to operate it; and• assistance from experts in the areas of product testing and problem solving.Moreover, the close proximity of the university to the plant allows frequent meetings and ensures that practical solutions are developed and implemented. A good example of the ongoing university I industry relationship developed is the joint work on improving cultivator shanks."

"Although Canada has achieved one of the highest living standards in the world, people and organizations have, over the past decade, begun to question the cost and means of this achievement. Concern has been expressed about the degree of environmental disturbance arising from industrial activities which have greatly contributed to our increased living standards. These industries include hardrock mining, pit and quarry operations, hydro-electric schemes, various agricultural enterprises and urban land developments.In the construction and operation of the above industries many environmental problems arise because the natural vegetative land cover is destroyed or drastically disturbed. Disturbance may occur to such a degree that revegetation is di ffi cult, often it appears impossible. Portions of the environment around such industries remain aesthetically unacceptable and appear to offer little or no potential for future resource use in wildlife, recreation or agriculture.The general public cannot dissociate itself from the activities of the aforementioned industries. It has, over many years, accepted the benefits and conveniences arising from those activities. Despite this, the increasing level of public concern imposes upon industry a need to alleviate or repair past, present and future environmental disturbance. Therefore it is incumbent upon industry to modify present technology or develop new techniques which would allow the disturbed environment to be easily and rapidly repaired."

"This report presents the results of a laboratory study undertaken to evaluate ground granulated blast-furnace slag from Algoma Steel Corporation, as a replacement for Portland cement in cemented mine backfill. The evaluation was based on the results of compressive strength tests performed on cylinders cast from mixtures made with a granulated blast-furnace slag and tailings from four different mines in the Sudbury basin. Various percent¬ages of slags and various binder to tailings ratios were used.Tests results show that, in terms of compressive strength, the slag performs as well or better than Portland cement as the binding agent in cemented mine backfill. Lime was found to be a poten¬tially good activator for ground granulated slag in mine backfill applications.A field test was conducted at one of the mines, consisting of placing a mixture of 95.5% ground granulated slag and 0.5% lime into a stope, and inspecting the floor slab as it hardened. The slag performed as expected, considering the backfill mixture proportions used and the preparation of the test site."

In a radio frequency and optoelectoronic device packaging, Gold-Tin (Au-20 wt% Sn eutectic) solder is used widely due to the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, high strength, and negligible creep characteristic under repetitive thermal cycling. With the recent lead-free movement, Gold-Tin solder is recognized as an alternative material for high temperature Lead-Tin solder. Generally, Gold-Tin solder is supplied in the forms such as ribbons, pellets, and ring frames. However, these forms must be set-up accurately on the joint area to press chips in bonding, therefore, it is difficult for these forms to satisfy the recent requirements for the down sizing in the connection areas. On the other hand, Au-20 wt% Sn solder paste can be applied flexibly to various supplying methods, such as printing, dispensing system and pin transcript. These methods also make it possible to reduce the production cost. However, in the case of using the solder paste, the void issue is one of the most undesirable problems. The void causes the degradation of the characteristics such as the bond strength, electrical characteristic and thermal conductivity. We have been intensifying the development of the void free paste, and have achieved void reduction by optimizing the powder size, the flux composition and the reflow condition.

"Located in the northwestern portion of the Abitibi greenstone belt, Les Mines Selbaie is a copper-zinc (silver and gold) producer. Felsic tuffs host three are zones. Composed of sulphide veins and breccias, they are not exhalative massive sulphide deposits, except, probably, for the massive pyrite (fragments and lenses) localized close to the top of the volcanic sequence.The total of all (mineable and mined) ore in the three zones presently outlined on the property, is of the order of 29.9 x 106 tonnes with average grade of 0.63 g/t Au, 37.02 g/t Ag, 1.21% Cu, 1.91% Zn.The ore reserve calculations and the daily production procedures are computerized to various degrees. The data handling process is highly computerized.Various geophysical methods are, and have in the past, been successfully used on the property. The ""mise-à-la-masse"" surveys were used to perform the geological interpretation of an underground deposit (A-2 zone). Presently the PULSE-EM surveys are performed in all surface and underground exploration drill holes."

"The analysis of meso- and micro-scale textural attributes has been undertaken on ore samples from the Ernest Henry iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposit in NW QLD. Quantified textural data including grain size, shape and mineral association have been extracted from classified images of core with the aim to better predict potential mineral processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and flotation. Data have been extracted from images of intact core at meso- and micro-scales using high resolution continuous images collected using automated core-logger technology, SEM-based and optical microscopy platforms.The results of this study will show examples of quantified size, shape and mineral association data from meso- and micro-scale classified images. Analysis of the data shows that there are domains of variable grain size and mineral association that can potentially be related to crushing and liberation behaviour. The trends that are observed at the drill-core (meso-) scale are consistent with those at the micro-scale. The results from the micro-scale analysis show that the domains defined at the core-scale have clearly different chalcopyrite sizes and shapes as well as variable bulk mineralogy.INTRODUCTIONInnovations in technology have allowed automated extraction of information about mineral shape, grain size and mineral association, i.e., texture, from meso- and micro-scale images of intact rocks. The overall aim of this research is to investigate trends in quantified textural data that can potentially give an early view of processing parameters such as predicted grind size and liberation behaviour."

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operations in Labrador and Quebec, in Canada, is among the largest openpit mining complexes on a world wide basis. Since the 1981-82 recession, IOC has embarked on a comprehensive cost reduction and productivity improvement program in order to survive in the world iron ore market.This paper will outline the approach used in prioritizing the cost reduction items.IntroductionMuch of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Most producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectively. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec.In the past decade the Iron Ore Company of Canada has been one of the largest producers of iron ore products in the world. Its pellets and concentrates as well as natural ores were sold in North America, Europe and the Far East. In 1981-82, sales, particularly in North America, went into a serious decline. For almost 30 years, the gospel IOC preached to employees was ""production, production!"" There were many innovations, and millions of dollars were spent on the biggest and best equipment, on research and development, on training and developing employees."

"The SIDMIN program aims at filling the mineral processor’s need to know the deportment of ‘minerals of interest’ not just ‘elements of interest’ that pass through the processing plants. Generally, chemistry is used as a tool of routine monitoring on site. Mineralogy, which is relatively much slower, is used more as a tool of research and post mortem investigations and these services are usually provided by a distant facility. The SIDMIN program enables site management to receive chemical and quantitative mineralogical reports on their critical samples daily, simultaneously and affordably.The author developed the SIDMIN program at ZCCM Nchanga Division where it continues to be a powerful tool for monitoring the efficiency of operations. Outlines are given of procedures for quick sample preparation and quantification of significant minerals in process samples. A specimen report is presented, which shows the format of reporting the contributions of individual minerals to metal losses at critical stages of the circuit. It is shown that SIDMIN provides timely information to management, about trends and abrupt changes in the quality of ore, and its processing, in a way never achievable by chemical analyses alone. This greatly helps in resolving the age-old problem of ‘bad ore’ or ‘bad operations’ on a day-by-day basis. For example increase in copper mica in the feed indicates excessive ore dilution during mining. Increased loss of free sulphides was traced to insufficient reagent conditioning time at the Concentrator. "Comparative tests of the conventional Turam survey configuration and an alternative configuration called the Tx-parallel configuration were conducted at the McClean uranium deposit in northern Saskatchewan. Both configurations detected the known conductors at the site but the alternative configuration demonstrated its particular effectiveness in the reconnaissance role. This effectiveness results from the fact that the length of Tx-parallel traversesis controlled only by the length ofthe transmitter and not by its power. In addition, the field strength along a Tx-parallel traverse is uniform unless the traverse approaches the end of the transmitter. This freedom from a strong gradient of the primary field along a Tx-parallel traverse eliminates the gradient-induced anomaly shifts which are common in conventional Turam operations. The locations of each of the McClean conductors, that were obtained from the Tx-parallel profiles, werein better agreement with the locations known from drilling than were the locations obtained from the conventional profiles. However, the conventional profiles gave better estimates of the conductance of the targets.The results obtained over the McClean conductors indicate that current gathering has a strong influence on Tx-parallel results with consequent unpredictable influence on depth and conductance estimates. However, the depth estimates obtained from the Tx-parallel data appear to be in good agreement with the known depth of the McClean south conductor. The Txparallel results provide shallow estimates of the depth of the McClean north conductor which suggest that the fracture zone above the graphitic conductor is a significant conductor as was also suggested by earlier VLF surveys.Comparison with the wide range of published geophysical test surveys for the McClean site showed that apart from the work required to lay the transmitter, the Tx-parallel mode of operation of a Turam exploration system is operationally very similar to a moving source Slingram type of survey. At the McClean test site, it provided the same depth of exploration as a conventionally deployed fixed loop transmitter."
