"The Hardie group of cinnabar claims is in the interior of British Columbia; 25 miles northwest of the city of Kamloops. It is one of a number of mercury; properties scattered along a north trending belt 20 miles long and up to 5; miles wide. In all but one of these properties cinnabar is associated with; dolomite veinlets in zones of carbonate alteration in bedded rocks of Triassic; and Cretaceous (?) age; or in intrusives cutting these bedded rocks. No dolomite alteration or cinnabar mineralization is known in the undoubted Tertiary rocks adjacent to the mercury belt.The mercury showings of the Hardie group lie for the most part in a granitic stock cutting Cretaceous (?) volcanics. The rock in this intrusive shows marked variations in texture and has been described in earlier reports as granite and granodiorice, granite porphyry, and trachyte or dacite porphyry. At Hardie mountain the cinnabar mineralization, unlike that of the other properties, is associated with a fine-grained, almost chalcedoni c, quartz; carbonates, though present, are of minor importance. Some of the most interesting showings are found in an adit in the southeastern part of the property where cinnabar mineralization shows a very distinct structural but not a genetic relationship to a brown porphyry dyke 2 to 8 feet wide cutting a phase of the stock that may best be described as aplitic"

Sub-Level stoping was used in this country at least as early as 1912, at the Magpie mine in Michipicoten. The fundamental principles of the system are the same wherever it is used, but modifications have been adopted in the Michigan iron mines and in several Canadian mines. It is a system whereby a suitable body of ore may be developed quickly and worked cheaply, with a low initial expense, and by miners of quite ordinary ability. The basic method, described in the following pages, may be modified to meet conditions where one or more factors are not in accord with normal sub-level stoping requirements. In suitable ground, sub-level stoping is probably the most satisfactory method yet devised for underground hard-rock mining. It is so simple, straightforward, and safe that no special training of a crew is necessary. Any miner capable of drifting and raising can carry on the work necessary for sub-level stoping after the shaft has been sunk. The method is suitable, however, only for reasonably wide ore-bodies, the minimum width of ore to which it can be economically applied being somewhere in the neighbour-hood of thirty feet. The development programme is simple. Assuming, for purposes of illuslustration, an ideal ore-body, two thousand feet long, dipping nearly vertical, and varying in width from forty to a hundred feet, this programme would be as follows. The shaft should be sunk on the footwall side about sixty feet outside of the ore-body and near its centre. Levels are then established at suitable intervals, usually 125 feet. On each level, a cross-cut is run to the ore-body, and there a main-haulage drift is driven in either direction to the end of the ore. Cross-cuts are then run at 25-foot intervals, so that ore-chutes can be spaced about 25 feet centre to centre each way. It is not necessary that these cross-cuts be extended to the walls of the ore-body, if the position of the walls is known; they are extended just far enough to make room for the correct location of the chutes.

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. "The sillimanite group minerals, kyanite, sillimanite and andalusite are identified as alumino-silicate minerals with the common chemical composition AIP3.Si02' so that each possesses similar physical properties. Kyanite is the most abundant mineral and mainly occurs in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia; sillimanite occurs in Ontario and Manitoba; and andalusite in Nova Scotia. The main use for the sillimanite-group minerals is in refractory applications for the production of refractory bricks and shapes. In refractory applications, the main performance criterion is the relative percentage of mullite formed within the material during firing. This phase gives a greater degree of resistance to creep deformation and slag attack, and improves the ability of the refractory to withstand high temperatures under load. The beneficiation of refractory silicate minerals has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, and the former Mines Branch. Eighteen kyanite, two sillimanite, and three andalusite evaluation studies were conducted between 1933 and 1987. A review of some of the more important studies is presented, which includes information concerning mineralogy, beneficiation methods and flotation data."

The impact of mining development on the environment can be minimized through comp careful construction and accurate monitoring. Key to meeting these objectives is t information at all stages of design, development, operation and decommissioning. "It is generally acknowledged that Canadian and foreign-based mining companies are spending relatively fewer dollars in Canada and more dollars abroad than was the case not many years ago. It is common to see the Canadian tax system being fingered as one of the causes in this shift in direction. However, if one takes the time to peel away the surface of our tax system, and to probe a little deeper into its substance, it will be found that the Canadian taxation of mining is generally quite competitive. IntroductionCross-border shopping in the mining industry? - Absolutely! Economics 100 teaches that dollars are votes in the capitalist system, and mining companies are going to cast their limited number of votes where they can achieve the highest return at the least risk. The Canadian consumer knows that taxes are a major factor in cross-border shopping, and mining company executives know that the same tenet holds true in their industry. Unfortunately, mining operations are subject to such a bewildering array of tax rules that making an intelligent decision is not always an easy matter.Statutory Tax RatesConsider, for example, the ""statutory"" tax rates shown in Table 1. (Statutory tax rate in this table refers to the simple sum of federal and provincial tax rates on profits as specified in the tax legislation.) Looking only at the total statutory tax rates (such as 66070 for Manitoba) , one might quickly observe that the Canadian mining industry is subject to a truly onerous tax regime, especially as compared to the United States where statutory tax rates can be in the 34% range."

"Pulp-froth interface position is a key variable in column operation. In plant practice, it is commonly estimated through a system of three pressure-transducers which allows the calculation of the pulp height. An alternate method based on the measurement of the conductivity profile across the interface has been proposed and successfully tested. Both methods however, present some practical problems related to the assumptions made in the calculation of the pulp height in the former case, and to the response time and the precision of the reading in the latter case.In this paper, the use of the neural network technique for improving the estimation of the pulp-froth interface in flotation columns is discussed. The technique is used with both conductivity-based and three pressure-transducer methods. Results obtained in a 2"" laboratory column and a 12"" pilot scale column are presented. A major obstacle in applying this approach in practise is the training of the artificial neural network. This problem is analyzed here for the conductivity-based method and some solutions are proposed."

The Gibraltar Mine and Mill facility were commissioned in 1972 by Gibraltar Mines Ltd utilizing a flowsheet consisting of two stages of crushing followed by a rod mill / ball mill grinding circuit. During operations a number of opportunities were evaluated to expand the mill capacity; however, the economics of the day did not allow any of these projects to proceed. The mine continued to operate until late 1998 when it was shutdown and put on care and maintenance due to low commodity prices. Taseko Mines acquired Gibraltar in 1999 and in 2004, with the improvement in the metal markets, made the decision to restart operations. During the restart planning a number of opportunities for mill improvements and upgrades were identified and, after operations were successfully restarted, the decision was made to once again review expansion opportunities for Gibraltar. Taseko evaluated various expansion alternatives eventually deciding to install a SAG Mill, convert the existing rod mills to ball mills and distribute the SAG discharge to the resultant six 6 parallel ball mills. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the SAG mill grinding circuit.

This paper provides an introduction to wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) and its successful application to the beneficiation of rare earth element (REE) enriched eudialyte. The analysis includes an in-depth reporting of the deportment of key elements as well as a statistical interpretation of the relative importance of operational parameters including magnetic field intensity, flow velocity, and matrix loading density. Conclusions are drawn on the relative success of the technology, potential areas for process improvement, and the research direction that continues to be investigated. Three original equipment manufacturer (OEM) technologies were subjected to a series of screening and characterization tests to identify the optimal operating parameter set to magnetically beneficiate eudialyte from Norra Kärr, Sweden. Upon the completion of the characterization test it was apparent that the Metso HGMS technology was superior with respect to REE recovery and gangue rejection for the Norra Kärr composite. The Metso HGMS was then subjected to a series of verification tests to confirm the repeatability and reproducibility of the system.

"With stricter limits globally being imposed on cyanide discharge levels in plant tailings, having a reliable and well designed cyanide detoxification circuit is critical for any operation. The INCO SO2/Air method is most commonly used for cyanide detoxification where sulfur dioxide and oxygen combine to oxidize cyanide to the much less toxic cyanate. This paper discusses the steps involved with the development, from laboratory through to design, of a robust cyanide detoxification circuit. The goal is to produce a cyanide detox circuit that reliably meets discharge target with the lowest operating and capital cost.Design begins in the laboratory where continuous tests simulate full scale operation of a detoxification circuit. Detailed design relies on several design parameters, based on theory and experience, to ensure the reactor can satisfy requirements of the cyanide destruction reaction. Selection of the correct reagents and their supply to the reactor is important to an operable process with minimal operator workload. The operability of the system relies on correct process control strategies to maintain optimal reagent addition and chemical conditions in the reactor. These design factors are critical to providing a robust plant that will consistently meet cyanide discharge levels, ensuring uninterrupted production and plant profitability."

At present, approximately 80 % of the worlds mine production of copper is achieved by smelting and electrorefining. The principle aim of copper electrorefining is to satisfy the large demand for extremely pure copper. It is remarkable that high quality copper cathodes with the required purity (99.99+% Cu, ASTM B115-10) and structural characteristics (i.e. deposit density and morphological texture) are produced from impure copper anodes dissolved in electrolytes containing a variety of impurities. This is accomplished with the proper control of operating parameters such as: current density; temperature; copper and sulfuric acid concentration; agitation; substrate preparation; and the application of electrolyte additives. The basic elements of the electrolysis of copper have not changed significantly over the past 150 years since the early developments of James Elkington. Importantly, our fundamental understanding of the underlying electrochemistry has advanced considerably. This is especially true regarding our knowledge of the mechanistic role of additives during the electrocrystallization of copper. This is a very complex subject and modern electrochemical techniques and the development of surface characterization and imaging instruments has helped immensely in our ultimate understanding of how additives control the deposit structure and morphology. The purpose of this paper is to review the historical development and application of electrolyte additives in copper electrorefining and to examine our current knowledge regarding their use. INTRODUCTION The first transatlantic telegraph cable was completed in August 1858. Regrettably, this cable failed shortly after the initial connections. After several more failed attempts, improvements in materials and copper quality resulted in successful communication between Europe and America on July 28, 1866. In many ways this hallmark event demonstrated the need for high purity copper. The first copper refinery in the world was commissioned in May 1869 in Pembrey, South Wales by partners Josiah Mason and James Balleney Elkington. (Historical Note). The 1865 and 1868 British patents issued to James Balleney Elkington were the foundation for the first commercial production of high purity electrolytic copper (Elkington, 1865, 1869, 1870). This important achievement was made possible primarily by the invention of the dynamo which was based on the fundamental operating principles advanced by Michael Faraday. A symbiotic relationship between copper refining and the dynamo was henceforth established. The dynamo provided electric current for electrolytic refining of copper and the electrorefining tankhouse provided pure copper which was required for the generation and transmission of electricity.

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Condition-based maintenance is replacing preventive maintenance in many industrial operations as a result of gains in productivity. Preventive maintenance is strictly time-based which means that as long as the prescribed time is sufficiently short, failures are prevented. The trade-offs between shorter cycles and increased downtime is a fine balancing act. Condition-based maintenance is gaining momentum as the more cost-effective and green solution to finding the optimal maintenance cycle and improving overall productivity. In the mining industry, various parameters of heavy equipment are monitored continuously to provide feedback for maintenance events. However, strain, shock, and vibration, key factors which lead to yielding and fatigue of metal parts, are not generally monitored by built-in systems, mainly due to the complexity of sensor installation and computational intensity of data processing. Scanimetrics has developed a stand-alone, add-on wireless system for measuring strain, shock, and vibration in heavy equipment and components, the data from which can be directly used to trigger maintenance events. The present system is being deployed in tar sands mining equipment. The system consists of a portable display and control unit, a software platform consisting of data management, sensor instrumentation and data analysis, and wireless strain sensor units, which can be easily installed on equipment. Data from the sensors can be gathered throughout the mine site, processed instantly, and used to generate condition-based maintenance events, improving overall uptime of the equipment and overall productivity of the mining operation.

"In March 2003 the CIM Council adopted and approved the document “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” as developed by the Special Committee of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal). The document is referred to as the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines. The document evolved from a specific recommendation by The Mining Standards Task Force (MSTF) of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission in its Final Report (January 1999) that the CIM form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on approaches to valuation of Mineral Properties. The CIMVal Standards and Guidelines are organized into two parts: •,Standards which are general rules in the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The use of the Standards is mandatory if the Valuation Report is stated to follow CIMVal (although not mandatory in the sense of having regulatory authority). Definitions are given at the beginning of the Standards. •,Guidelines which elaborate on the Standards and, while not mandatory, provide guidance and best practices which are highly recommended to be followed in the Valuation of Mineral Properties.CIMVal specifies requirements for the Qualified Valuator who has the responsibility for choosing the appropriate approaches and methods for the valuation of mineral properties. With regard to the specifics of the application and practice of valuation approaches and methods, CIMVal directs the Qualified Valuator to the large body of published papers, published valuations, presentations and court judgments to guide his or her choice. This is also the approach taken by VALMIN (Australia) and SAMVAL (South Africa). To facilitate the dissemination of industry practice, the CIMVal Committee organized a “Valuation Day” at the CIM Annual General Meeting in Toronto (Mining Millennium 2000), on March 8, 2000. Industry experts presented papers on valuation of Mineral Properties which were subsequently published in a proceedings volume and individually ad technical papers in the CIM Bulletin. The Management and Economics Society of CIM has continued to identify and publish papers on valuation in the CIM Bulletin and Magazine. The present document gathers in one place the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines, the papers from the 2000 Valuation Day, and a number of subsequent papers that illustrate industry practice for the valuation of mineral properties."

The continued demand for mineral products, coupled with the depletion of high-grade ore resources, has led to the mining of lower grade ores, which often require fine grinding to achieve mineral liberation. Regrinding of low-grade ores results in the production of fine gangue mineral solids and produces vast quantities of fluid fine tailings which are difficult to separate from water, particularly if they are composed of clay minerals. Organic synthetic polymers and inorganic salts have been widely applied in flocculation of colloidal suspensions in the treatment of mining tailings. However, there are growing concerns regarding their impact on the environment and human health. Recently, extracellular biopolymer flocculants or bioflocculants have attracted much attention as alternative reagents. In this study, much effort has been devoted to considering the effectiveness of protein and polysaccharide-based biopolymers for the dewatering of clay slurries. The interaction between kaolinite and illite clays and biopolymers was investigated via settling tests at pH 7 and 10. Zeta potential measurements were also conducted as a complementary technique. Results showed that protamine and lysozyme protein- based biopolymers were generally the more effective bioflocculants. Pectin, a polysaccharide-based biopolymer, showed a dispersing effect and has the potential to be used as a dispersant and/or depressant for clay minerals in froth flotation. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of high-grade ore resources, the need for mining of low-grade ores has increased over the past few decades (Bourgès-Gastaud, Stoltz, Dolez, Blond, & Touze-Foltz, 2014; Chen, Walshe, Fru, Ciborowski, & Weisener, 2013; C. Wang, Harbottle, Liu, & Xu, 2014). Low-grade ores often require fine grinding and contain clay minerals, leading to the generation of fluid fine tailings (FFT). It is a challenging process to separate suspended clay particles from water (Craciun, Manaila, & Stelescu, 2013; Dompierre, Lindsay, Cruz-Hernández, & Halferdahl, 2016; Kasperski & Mikula, 2011; Mercier et al., 2012). Clay minerals form stable dispersions in water due to their anisotropic nature, non-spherical morphology and colloidal size (Lagaly & Ziesmer, 2003; Olphen, 1977). The difficulty in separating clay minerals from water has led to the accumulation of vast quantities of FFT in oil sands, phosphate, copper and nickel operations, representing a huge liability for mining companies (Chen et al., 2013; Mercier et al., 2012)

The conducting of risk reviews is an essential activity in ensuring safe operating conditions, both during project design phases and for existing facilities. The following paper presents a structured approach to the conducting of risk reviews for existing operations, including descriptions of supporting documentation and guidelines for on-site review activities. The conducting of regular site risk reviews and safety audits is crucial in ensuring the continued safe operation of existing facilities, particularly in the copper industry where numerous processes and unit operations can present catastrophic risks, both in terms of loss of life and financial liability. The structured approach presented aims to provide a logical and comprehensive analysis of risks to align safety-related facilities and procedures with current industry best practice and ensure consistency across multiple client operations. INTRODUCTION The production of copper, whether by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical process routes, carries significant inherent safety risks. Production volumes are relatively large, often requiring complex processing routes, multiple production trains and a variety of supporting ancillary facilities. Furthermore, considering the relatively large size of ore reserves, copper production plants can have operational lives well beyond the typical design duration of 20 years. In this context, the conducting of regular risk reviews is essential in ensuring safe operating conditions and aligning facilities with current industry best practices. Risk reviews and safety audits can take various forms and have various areas of focus. The methodologies and approaches described below relate specifically to catastrophic risks, defined broadly as risks that carry the potential for multiple fatalities and significant financial losses. Focus is given to existing facilities and does not consider the risk-related activities such as hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies conducted during plant design. The structured approach presented aims to provide a guide for effective site- based audits and a logical analysis of risks identified. RISK CLASSIFICATION Table 1 provides a typical summary of the classification of risk types and the associated consequence categories and descriptions. It illustrates the descriptions of a catastrophic risk in terms of the broad categories of Health & Safety, Environment, Financial, Image & Reputation and Legal & Compliance. In terms of the Financial category, numeric costs ranges are often prescribed depending on the financial characteristics of the specific operation and the associated parent company.

"This paper provides a foundation for studying the growth of fractures in presence of other discontinuities and different anisotropies of low permeable hydrocarbon formations and helps to improve the design strategies for multistage fracturing.The multistage fracturing technology has recently been used to exploit low permeable hydrocarbon reservoirs. However, the mechanism of hydraulic fractures interaction and the impact of local heterogeneities on ultimate trajectory of the growing hydraulic fractures are not yet understood in depth. A fully coupled poroelastic Finite Element based model is developed to investigate the mixed mode propagation behaviour of growing hydraulic fractures. This model takes advantage of an explicit representation of the fracture which enables us to take the effects of rock and fluid related parameters into account. Moreover, impact of fracture geometry and leak-off phenomenon is investigated. The refined mesh around the crack provides the added advantage of more detailed stress distribution, pore pressure change and back stress in the vicinity of the fracture and in particular at the fracture tip. The potential deviation propensity of the fractures is evaluated based on the fundamental rule that fractures propagate perpendicular to the direction of the minimum horizontal stress.This study shows that pressurization of transverse hydraulic fractures results in the reorientation of local principal stresses, particularly in vicinity of fracture tips. Variation of flow patterns clearly influences the evolution of shear stress around the fracture tips which will potentially lead to mixed-mode I and II fracturing and consequently, fracture deviation. The presence of local heterogeneities such as preexisting fissures and/or fractures is a main source of such pore pressure induced stress redistribution and reorientation and potential deviation of hydraulic fractures.Most existing models ignore or simplify the effect of pore pressure/stress coupling as well as the fracture geometry and fluid flow within the fracture. Also, the fluid leak-off from the hydraulic fracture into the formation, which is a controlling factor in fracture growth, is often considered using analytical models. Taking advantage of a fully coupled porelastic model along with an explicitly discretized fracture, this study provides a more realistic insight into the complex fracture propagation processes of multistage fracturing operations particularly in presence of reservoir geo-mechanical complexities."

"The neutral roasting of As bearing copper concentrates is confirmed well established and promising option for the treatment of this type of complex concentrate. The AS elimination by volatilization allows subsequent treatment of the calcines produced in a conventional pyrometallurgical process, by blending this product with standard concentrates.Several tests were performed using the fluidized bed pilot plant at the University of Concepción with different types of concentrates. Calcines, fines from two hot cyclones and flue dust from the ESP were collected. It is a general expectancy that in most of the construction and renovation project, the contractor is going to hand over the as-built documents to the owner or the facility management team at the completion of the project. The main challenge for the handover process is to ensure the completeness of the captured building information and the accuracy of it in terms of how well it represents the reality. Building information models (BIMs) can be used as an information repository to store and deliver as-built information. However, due to changes made in the construction and renovation phases and errors made in the design and modeling phases, discrepancies can exist between BIMs created in the design phase (asdesigned BIMs) and actual building conditions. Laser scanning technology is able to efficiently capture accurate geometric information, which provides an opportunity to identify and quantify discrepancies and update as-designed BIMs into as-built BIMs. This paper presents a case study, within which the asdesigned BIM of a newly renovated research lab was updated into an as-built BIM using laser scanned data captured in the renovation phase. This paper introduces the challenges associated with the updating process for the as-designed BIM. In order to address these challenges, this paper introduces a framework that supports the update of an as-designed BIM by incorporating point clouds captured by the progressive laser scans.
