Radiometric surveys of the beach and nearshore zone of the Dutch Frisian Islands have identified sands enriched in heavy minerals. The areas of heavy mineral concentration have been mapped in detail using a state of the art towed gamma-ray detector, which gives improved sensitivity through the use of new detector materials and improved data processing techniques. The detector provides continuous measurement of sea floor radioactivity (and of a number of other parameters) and can be used simultaneously with other survey techniques, such as echo sounding, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. It enables a rapid, and cost effective, assessment of the surface distribution of heavy minerals to be made. The heavy mineral suite includes magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, rutile and zircon. These minerals contain 1-3 orders of magnitude more U and Th, in terms of their activity concentrations, than the accompanying light minerals (mainly quartz). Since the heavy mineral composition of the sands appears to be relatively constant along the Dutch Frisian Island chain, the U and Th concentrations can be used to provide a quick estimate of the heavy mineral content. The sea floor radiometric measurements allow sediment sampling for more detailed analysis to be highly targetted. The zones of heavy mineral enrichment are generally sub-parallel to the coast and are usually confined to water depths of 5-10 m. There is a close correlation with sand bars on the shoreface, the highest radioactivity typically occurring just seaward of the crest of these features. As well as being used for heavy mineral exploration, similar radiometric methods can be applied to mineral processing. Gamma-ray detection systems can be used to provide rapid analysis in the process stream enabling on-line grade control and optimisation of processing, from excavation of mineral sands to the final products.

This has happened not only in the oil or hydrocarbons industries, but also in relation to the exploration or exploitation of other minerals, metallic and non-metallic. This has forced several countries to complement or create legal rules that make possible its own development and the International Law, through the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, to regulate this activity in the space of its own, the calling area. Chile, as country with a long experience in mining and great advances in large deposits exploitation, possesses a special juridical frame that regulates this economic activity according if it is the geographical or territorial area in which is realizes, and it has been complemented lately with the international normative.

Manganese nodules lay in vast areas of the deep sea floor. Ideal harvesting conditions for a manganese nodule field are dense nodule abundances of nodules between 20 and 60 mm diameter and a metal content as high as possible. With regard to the development of collector technology, the properties of the deep sea soil, in which the nodules are embedded and to which the nodules stick, are of major interest. The forces for loosening the nodules have to be provided by the collector. For this purpose water jets and/or mechanical devices can be employed. For the choice of the best collecting procedure, various criteria, such as collecting rate, energy consumption and the environmental impact on the eco system of the deep sea floor, have to be considered and weighted as to their importance. Nowadays, the concept of a mining system with a flexible transport hose and a self propelled collecting machine is increasingly accepted among the expert community. With regard to the trafficability of the deep sea soil with a self propelled mining machine, the mechanic properties of the soil and the morphology of the deep sea floor are of special importance. The manganese nodule fields, which are interesting with regard to their recoverability, are mostly in the areas of tectonic fracture zones, at which the morphology of the sea floor is formed by vulcanic activities. In these areas, deep sea mountains, pits and other obstacles exist that have to be driven around if not trafficable.

India?s interest in the resources of the deep seabed particularly the manganese nodules in the Indian Ocean can be traced back to the Indian Ocean Expedition of 1960 ? 65. The collection of Manganese Nodule samples from the Indian Ocean in January 1981 aroused considerable interest within the scientific community. Following several surveying expeditions, the Central Indian Ocean was identified as the most promising area for exploitation. India was accorded ?Pioneer Investor? status and further research and development programs were launched to establish the techno-economic viability of deep seabed mining. India has also shown considerable progress in the field of development and testing of methods for processing the nodules. The Department of Ocean Development manages the program.

Recent exploration demonstrates that hydrothermal systems related to upper mantle ultramafic outcrops are common in the modern ocean. Most sites are located on slow spreading ridges with a low magmatic budget. Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide (VMS) deposits, associated with basalt, along the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are volcanically controlled near the topographic highs at the center of the segments. Three preferential settings are identified for ultramafic sulfide mineralization: 1) Off axis, on rift valley walls, near the amagmatic ends of the segments; 2) Non-transform offsets and 3) Ultramafic dome structures at the ridge transform fault intersection. The upper surface of these domes is often interpreted as a detachment fault. Three processes are considered for driving hydrothermal cells in ultramafic rocks: 1) regional heat flow at the ridge axis 2) Cooling of a deep gabbroic intrusion and 3) exothermic heat produced during serpentinisation. Along the Mid Atlantic Ridge, four types of ultramafic hydrothermal mineralization are observed: 1) High temperature (>350°C) sulfide mineralization related to low pH fluids, (ex. The Logachev field at 14°45? N and the Rainbow field at 36°14 N); 2) Medium temperature carbonate chimneys (<100°C) related to high pH fluids (ex. The Lost City site at 30°N); 3) Low temperature diffuse venting associated with extremely high methane discharge and pervasive alteration and silicification of both volcanic and ultramafic rocks (ex : The Saldanha field at 36°34 N); 4) Stockwork mineralization and quartz veins with sulfides related to gabbroic intrusions within ultramafic rocks (15°N). When compared to mineralization in a basaltic environment, sulfide deposits are enriched in copper, zinc and specific elements related to an ultramafic rock source such as Ni and Co. They are also significantly enriched in gold which, unlike in basaltic environments, has a bimodal occurrence both in low temperature Zn-rich assemblages and in high temperature Cu-rich mineral assemblages. The Cu-Zn-Co-Au deposits along the Mid Atlantic Ridge seem to be more common than on land where few similar VMS deposits are known. We consider that ultramafic VMS deposits on slow spreading ridges constitute a specific marine type of mineralization that is less easily than back arc deposits, incorporated into the continent during obduction processes.

Mineral exploration problems in the S.W. Pacific are not unique to that region, but a combination of favourable circumstances render it an ideal area to attempt to solve such problems. The land area of the S.W. Pacific island nations is only a fraction of the total sea area they can claim under current International Law. Hence, they have a great need to explore and evaluate their offshore areas. For the past ten years the focus of this work has been CCOP/SOPAC which has individually and jointly with other groups initiated and maintained far reaching marine mineral exploration programmes. In association with CCOP/SOPAC the writer has obtained and analysed approximately 650 sediment samples from the S.W. Pacific region for seventeen elements. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to the data set. The aim has been to identify chemically anomalous sediments reflecting either sea floor mineralisation and/or mineralisation on adjacent land areas.

Recommendations have been drafted following an international multidisciplinary panel discussion organized at UNESCO/IOC by the Académie des Sciences d?Outre-Mer on 15 December 2010 conveyed, according to its mandate, to the French government and to an international pool of scientists and stakeholders. These take into consideration the relevant Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982, the Rio ?Earth Summit? Convention of Biological Diversity of 5 June 1992 as well as the activities and recommendations implemented for the world?s oceans and seas, in particular by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the recent reports and scientific works (including those implemented by the ISA Kaplan, Ifremer, COI-Unesco). The recommendations integrate, for one of the ecosystems, the conclusions of the project of the conclusions of an IOC-UNESCO / Government of Flanders project (2004-2010) implemented by Dr. V. Cold Ocean Placers: Polar storms, interstadial littorals and crustal adjustments. Polar storms with consistent strong winds in the Southern, Antarctic Ocean are responsible for placer deposits on both the east and west coasts of Australia, on the west coast of New Zealand, as well as on the coasts of South America and Africa. Arctic winds, confined by both land and ice, generate similar placers in Labrador and Greenland as well as on the coasts of Scotland, Norway, Hudson&apos;s Bay, Nome, Goodnews Bay, Kamchatka and the north coast of Siberia. Tasman and Labrador seas have several parallels to Newfoundland, including north-south polar waterways, young spreading ocean floors, and youthful coastal escarpments with glaciated coasts. Black sand beds in beach deposits on the modern and Pleistocene transgression strandlines, skewed to the distal ends of beaches, and set into either bedrock or sediment fill, are the locus of the light-heavy mineral placers with titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements; chromium; iron; and tin. Gold and platinum group elements are the ultra heavy minerals at one end of the spectrum and tend occur in proximal placers generated, either directly from bedrock sources, or as minor by-products in distal light-heavy mineral placers. Diamonds are unusual in that the value is only in the larger stones, despite the formation of beach sand and aeolian placers in the littoral zone, and the sites of concentration are in very high energy bedrock traps, on terraces that are mined to depths of 100 metres below sealevel.

"We report here on current topics of our project, based on the results of recent cruises and laboratory analysis, about the diversity of compositions and configurations of the hydrogenetic ferromanganese deposits in several Northwestern Pacific Seamounts. This recent research has discovered important aspects of these deposits regarding the mode of variation with water depth, topography and substrate geology, possible bacterial mediation, temporal variation with age in mineralogy, and major and minor element chemistry. All cruises and analysis have been supported by the facilities and staff of the Japan Agency of Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Japan Oil, Gas, and Metal resources Corporation (JOGMEC), Geological Survey of Japan, and Kochi Core Center (KCC) using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), a monitored rock drilling system, dredges, and manned-submersibles in the NW Pacific seamounts,The results indicate that most of the rock outcrops on the slopes, shoulders, and much of flat tops are covered with maximum 10-cm thick crusts, but the thickness, metal content, and microstructural properties are not always uniform over the seamounts, but variable in space and time. The micro-stratigraphic description of whole-rock samples indicates a history of deposition and sedimentation, which control the diversity in bulk composition and abundance caused by the variable incorporation of iron-manganese precipitates into the deposits during variable environmental conditions. We conclude that hydrogenetic precipitation of iron-manganese oxide has taken place for more than 20 million years at a growth rate about 4-6 mm/my, in water depths below 1000m. The results indicate a fairly continuous and constant metal deposition since the middle Miocene age or older to the present. Our case study of geological sciences at a model seamount within the Japanese EEZ suggests that scientific knowledge is useful and essential in exploring mineral deposits, economic estimation, and designing systems, if supported by well-combined geological and oceanographic and biological research. The distribution map of ferromanganese deposits and geological map will be published soon in 2017 to be issued by the Geological Survey of Japan."

KIOST has developed the pilot mining robot, named MineRo ?? from early-2011 to mid- 2012. The robot consists of two unit-modules having an identical mechanical structure and hydraulic system. One unit-module has two track systems, two pick-up devices, two crushers, one lifting pump and one thruster. The pick-up device is fitted on the frame of the track device. All actuators are driven hydraulically, which are manipulated by valves and the controllers. Each unit-module is equipped with one dual HPU of 250kW / 4,000V. PWM-16 (INNOVA AS) as hydraulic valve controller is adopted, which outputs PWM signals of 16 channels and can be used under pressure in oil-filled box. To measure angular velocity or displacement of hydraulic actuator, turbine-type flow-meters are adopted. The flow-meter has RF (Radio Frequency) type pulse detector, which extends the flow range by eliminating drag on the rotor. Two track motors, two crusher motors, lifting pump, one thruster can be controlled their velocities through feedback of the measured flow-rates. As well as the flow-rates, the states of the hydraulic system such as hydraulic pressures, temperatures, leakages are measured through a self-developed flow-pressure canister. In that canister, multi-channel amplifier boards are installed, through which the vast amount of data is acquired and transmitted to the main controller using serial communication.

Hydrothermal circulation that produces sulfide deposits in the marine environment can also produce sulfide deposits in lakes. The major differences in terms of process are (1) in lakes the hydrothermal fluid is meteoric water of low salinity whereas in the marine setting it is saline and (2) the rocks that are leached of metals to produce the deposits are continental crust in one case and oceanic crust in the other. We have examined sulfides that are presently forming in two lakes ? Lake Tanganyika in east Africa and Lake Oyunuma in Hokkaido, Japan. Tanganyika is the second largest lake in the world and the second deepest rift lake, after Lake Baikal in southeastern Siberia. Two hydrothermal fields are known in its northern basin at Pemba and Cape Banza (Tiercelin et al., 1993). At Pemba, CO2 and CH4-rich, low temperature (53-88°C) hydrothermal fluids are forming decimeter-tall chimneys at 2-46 m water depth. Our microscopic and x-ray diffraction study of samples from the Pemba site reveal marcasite and pyrite to be the most common sulfides. Minor minerals include barite, hematite, bornite and chalcopyrite. Quartz and feldspar are also identified and were probably incorporated from the surrounding lake sediments. At Cape Banza, aragonite chimneys, up to 70 cm high, are venting fluids at 66-103°C.

An unusual combination of ten new, deep (-100 m) coreholes and an extensive high-resolution seismic reflection network enables us to produce a detailed study of the phosphorite resources in the Tertiary strata of the Georgia continental shelf. These strata are mixtures of a terrigenous facies, notably quartz and clay along with minor amounts of other aluminosilicate minerals, and of a marine facies, notably phosphorite and carbonate. Phosphatic sediments occur throughout the cores, however the richest phosphorite beds are in the middle Miocene (Serravallian) sediment, where they constitute up to 70 percent of the sediment mass. Major zones of phosphate enrichment occur chiefly at major unconformity boundaries (tops of Oligocene, lower and middle Miocene, upper Miocene, and lower and upper Pliocene) and at prominent intrastratal reflectors representing minor unconformities within units. Phosphorite co-occurs with the clay minerals, especially palygorskite, but correlates inversely with carbonate and detrital quartz, indicating a low-energy depositional environment. The clay minerals present in these strata, which have an environmental consequence on recovery of the phosphorite, are varying concentrations of smectite, kaolinite, mica, palygorskite, and sepiolite. Phosphatic resources have been determined within only the Miocene strata. Sediment volume for this unit to the 100 m isobath on the continental shelf has been established using the high-resolution seismic reflection network that has been calibrated using the deep coreholes. Phosphorite grains larger than 0.1 mm average about 40% of the sediment. In turn, most of the remainder of the sediment in this size range is quartz, which is separable from phosphate grains using conventional flotation techniques. Our estimate is that 300 Gt of phosphorite lie within the Miocene strata of the Georgia continental shelf.

A thorough appreciation of the origin, formation, preservation and geometry of marine sand and gravel deposits is central in demonstrating that their extraction by dredging does not affect coastal processes or marine life. Geological evaluation underpins wave, tidal and sediment transport modeling and assists in predicting the nature and extent of seabed change during and after dredging. Marine sand and gravel deposits in the English Channel, southern North Sea and parts of the Irish Sea are of predominantly periglacial fluvial origin and record long histories of valley and floodplain cut and fill associated with Quaternary climatic and sea level oscillations. In the Bristol Channel, the influence of marine transgression and tidal dominance in sorting proglacial outwash deposits is evident in the distribution of sandbanks, scoured channels and gravel lags of this region. These deposits are relict and are unrelated to coastal sediment dynamics. Their extraction leaves seabed depressions which monitoring shows remain unfilled. The resultant offshore bathymetric changes and sediment removal in over 10 m water depth are not transmitted to the coastal zone as beach drawdown, wave height increases or sediment starvation. Applications for new aggregate dredging permissions in UK waters must be accompanied by an EIA and need to make a convincing case that the dredging will not affect rare or declining species and communities of marine life. Seabed recovery rates post dredging are now investigated and understood with reference to geological setting and the uniqueness of the sediment/biological character (biotope). Investigation of the continental shelf by the Industry and others reveals the large extent of gravel-dominated biotopes relative to commercially viable deposits.

The Logatchev hydrothermal field is situated on the east inner flank of the rift valley of the MAR at 14°45?N and is hosted by serpentinized peridotites and minor gabbronorites while basalts are subordinate. Hydrothermal precipitates recovered from the Logatchev field during a recent R/V Meteor cruise include massive chalcopyrite chimneys, massive pyrite crusts, silicified breccias, abundant secondary Cu-sulfides, red jaspers, abundant Fe-Mn-oxyhydroxides as well as atacamite and Mn-oxides (Kuhn et al., 2004). Previous results of hydrothermal fluid studies in the Logatchev field are somewhat at odds with theoretical models of ultramafic-seawater reaction. Butterfield et al. (2003) suggested that the Fe component of orthopyroxene plays the more important role compared to olivine in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems. This consideration is supported by the recovery of large amounts of Opx-rich gabbronorites and orthopyroxenites in the Logatchev field (Kuhn et al., 2004). A possible tool to constrain the contribution of the different rock types (ultramafics, mafics, MORB) to a seafloor hydrothermal system is the systematic analysis of 187/188Os ratios of the host rocks as educts and the sulfides as products. For instance, abyssal peridotites mainly display low 187/188Os ratios (<0.127); in contrast MORB and gabbronorites have radiogenic ratios of >0.13 (Snow and Reisberg, 1995), orthopyroxenite has ratios of about 0.174 (Büchl et al., 2002) and seawater has an ever higher 187/188Os of about 1 (Sharma et al., 1997). Therefore, massive sulfides predominantly leached from ultramafic rocks should have Os isotopic ratios plotting on a mixing line between the ultramafic rocks and seawater (in a 187/188Os vs. 1/Os diagram), whereas those derived from MORB, gabbronorites and/or orthopyroxenites will be plotting on different mixing lines.

The continental shelves occupy a vast area of Russia and contain complexes of commercial placer minerals. Of prime importance are Cenozoic placers of valuable minerals including gold, cassiterite, diamonds, chromite, platinoids, and minerals of titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, biogenic amber and fossil ivory (1). Commercial placer minerals are associated with shelf placer formation zones (SPFZ). These zones are located at junctions of marginal orogens and shelf troughs in morphostructures where upwarping, subsidence, and sign-variable neotectonic movements are not significant. The SPFZs are characterized by ancient buried leveling planes with mantles of waste, series of wave-cut aggradation terraces on land and beneath the sea, and drowned and buried stream valleys. The occurrence of mineral placers in the SPFZs was caused by endogenic mineralization and exogenic placer hosted formation. Concentrations of commercial biogenic minerals are associated with areas of burial of biogenic material (release of resins by plants and theriofauna thanatocoenoses) and with their transition zones. Since the Oligocene, alternations in marine transgression-regression have dominated the shelf areas. This has resulted in the formation of polygenic placers. Climatic conditions are of great importance: warm and humid climate in the Paleogene-Neogene changed to colder climates in the late Pliocene (polar type sedimentation; formation of permafrost strata and sea glaciation). These events are responsible for the regularity in placer formation during the Cenozoic in which the early Cenozoic (Eocene-Oligocene-Miocene) and late Cenozoic (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene and late Pleistocene-Holocene) epochs are prominent.

In a commercial effort to characterize deep seabed manganese deposits in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the northeastern tropical Pacific, Ocean Mineral s Company carried out 16 expeditions to the region between -1978 and 1981. During these cruises OMCO collected substantial data. Activities included acoustic profiling, video and photographic imaging of the seabed, and sampling of the deposits with dredges, box cores and free-fall grab samplers. In 1990 the samples, photographs, technical reports and computer data bases which resulted from this work were archived at the Marine Minerals Technology Center at the University of Hawaii. This preliminary examination of the collection focuses on the biological observations made from almost 10,000 photographs of the seabed and the manganese nodule size distributions and compositional data from the free-fall grab recoveries. Regional trends are evident in all three data types. The biological examinations of the seabed photographs show significant geographical trends, with greater abundances of organisms being noted in the northeastern extreme of the region, decreasing toward the southwest (11.4 to 2.7 observations per 100 m2; 460 to 190 g per 100 m2). The nodule size distributions suggest that the ratio of the nodule burial rates to growth rates systematically decreases over the same range (0.65 to 0.36 nodules buried per 1 cm of growth). The present three-year long phase of the SOPAC/Japan Deep Sea Co-operative Mineral Resources Programme [Programme], commenced in 2000. The Programme has been funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ), since 1985. Field survey activities and associated data analysis and interpretation, for the Programme, has largely been carried out by the Deep Ocean Resources Development Co., Ltd. (DORD). The Government of Japan has, since 1982, recognised DORD as one of its ? Pioneer Investigators? for manganese nodules in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone . Although the objective of this paper is to present the results of the drilling cruise that was conducted from December 2001 to January 2002, within the North Fiji Basin, in Fiji?s EEZ, it will also seek to provide a broad overview of the results of the cruise conducted within the Cook Islands in May to June 2000, as well as present preliminary results of the cruise conducted in the Marshall Islands in June to July 2002.

The Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) was authorized by an act of the United States Congress in 1996. The act established several marine minerals research centers in the U.S., including one at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska MMTC is funded through the Minerals Management Service of the Department of the Interior and concentrates its research in the Arctic seas region. Recent research projects at the MMTC include, among others, application of a geographic information system (GIS) to the gold placer deposits offshore Nome, Alaska, development of a marine gold placer reserve definition model using a neural network, and development of an expert system model for submarine tailings disposal (STD) planning and decision-making. Although geostatistics remains the most prevalent method used today for ore grade estimation, researchers have made numerous improvements over the years for accurately predicting grades of ore using other estimation techniques. One such technique, the neural network, has recently emerged as an alternative to geostatistics for grade estimation purposes. A neural network is a non-linear, model-free estimator that is well-suited for noisy and/or sparse data environments. Neural networks perform best with non-linear spatial data, contrary to the stationary assumption of ordinary Kriging techniques. In the marine placer ore reserve definition model, the neural network technique was used to estimate placer gold reserves offshore Nome. This study demonstrated the utility of neural network modeling over other traditional ore reserve estimation methods, especially for high cut-off grades. Some of the relevant issues of neural network modeling were also addressed in the study. In testing, the neural network produced results that were close to those from geostatistical techniques including Kriging, polygonal, and inverse distance methods.

The Chilean part of the archipelago of Tierra del Fuego, situated south of latitude 62o S, is within that country?s Región de Magallanes y Antártica, and separated from the remainder of Chile by the Magellan Strait. In recent geological history several phases of Quaternary age glaciers originating in the Andean and Dawinian Cordilleras eroded assumed primary gold deposits and entrained their related alluvial deposits. Piedmont glaciation extended to the east and south over m0st of the land and beyond the present-day coastline into extensive areas exposed during the resulting lowered relative sea level. During interglacials particulate gold incorporated unevenly in the widespread drift, till and moraines was fluvially released and concentrated into streams and flood gravels. Coastal erosion enriched various beaches with gold. From 1868 onwards Tierra del Fuego hosted a major gold rush whereby early, labour intensive, beach mining eventually developed into inland dredging. But continued mining activity was interrupted and then terminated by several external factors. Most miners, always seeking ?greener pastures?, joined the rush to the new discoveries in the Klondike (1896) and Nome, Alaska (1899). In 1904 the international boundary, established in 1881, became the subject of a major dispute not settled until 1984, The Panama canal?s opening in 1914 turned Tierra del Fuego, previously on the Pacific-Atlantic shipping route, into a remote backwater. World War II brought opposing foreign naval forces to the actual islands where most gold had been taken from the beaches. It also crippled the dredging industry which lost its coal supply and never recovered. Nevertheless, some small scale mining continues to this day.

"The future of the marine mining industry is tied to the resource potential of the seafloor. Everything from economic feasibility, policy decisions and environmental impact assessments to extraction techniques and mining tool design rely on an understanding of the size, composition, and distribution of the deposits. Development and regulatory decisions must ultimately be tied to not only the grade and tonnage estimates of individual deposits or groups of deposits, but also an understanding of the uncertainty of these estimates. Here, we will discuss how seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposit grades and tonnages are evaluated, and the sources of the uncertainties associated with these values.TONNAGE UNCERTAINTYFirst-order tonnage (size) estimates for SMS deposits are primarily determined from calculating the volumes of material that occurs as positive bathymetric features on the seafloor. The extent of sulfide mineralization on the seafloor can be determined either from visual surveys (camera-tow, remotely-operated vehicle (ROV), or human-occupied submersible surveys) or from volume calculations of bathymetric features identified from digital elevation models of the seafloor, or a combination of both methods. For bathymetric models to be used to identify deposits in the absence of visual groundtruthing, data resolution of 1 m or less is generally required to confidently identify a feature as being hydrothermal in origin (as opposed to a volcanic or tectonic feature), and therefore near-bottom multibeam data acquisition (e.g., using autonomous underwater vehicle (AUVs) or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) is required (Fig. 1). Specific characteristics of bathymetric features, such as shape, slope angles and surface roughness can be used to identify features of hydrothermal origin (Fig. 1). However, so far, bathymetric features mapped at a resolution of ~1 m cannot be relied upon to unambiguously distinguish a sulfide mound, and the additional use of multiple AUVmounted sensors, such as magnetometers, which can be used to detect hydrothermal upflow zones, or self-potential sensors, which detect electrical fields related to the oxidation of sulfide minerals, can increase the confidence that a bathymetric feature is indeed a sulfide body, without the need for expensive and time-consuming visual surveys (c.f. Petersen et al., this volume)."
