Environmental considerations are a key driver within the marine mining consenting process across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. The risks can be mitigated by the common application of existing seabed biological expertise in baseline assessment and monitoring. The key ingredients of a fit-for-purpose, cost-effective seabed ecological assessment include early consideration of ecological issues within the project life-cycle through undertaking detailed desk-top studies as-wellas the multiple-use of data that have been acquired as a consequence of prospecting processes, with such data including remote acoustic data, seabed imagery and sediment samples. These data can be used to inform the design of robust benthic baseline surveys which provide adequate information on the ecological character of the environment in question and habitats and species of conservation importance - decreasing project risk and increasing the likelihood of securing consent.

Mineral zonation studies were conducted on hydrothermal vents of two hot spot volcanoes. One study site is located within the Axial Caldera of the axial hot spot volcano of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The young high-temperature hydrothermal vent field consisting of two polymetallic sulfide chimneys, five meters high, located at 130°01.5'W, 45°56.5'N, along a fault complex at the base of the southwestern wall of Axial Caldera was sampled during four ALVIN dives in 1983. Temperatures of up to 270°C were measured within the orifice of one of the chimneys, which was then broken off and recovered with the submersible. Both black and white "smoke" was observed to be emanating from the one chimney sampled. The high-temperature chimney extends directly from a field of broken lobate lavas which are located at a water depth of 1,550 meters, about 200 meters east of the caldera wall. The chimney makes one of the shallowest active high-temperature vents studied to date. The vent is surrounded by clumps of vestimentiferan worms and is located within an elongate field of red-colored iron smectite blankets and chimneys. The low-temperature field forms a ribbon 150 meters wide, extending for about 1,300 meters at the base of the wall. Chemical analyses of the hydrothermal deposits ranging from the polymetallic sulfides of the chimney to the outer zones of the low-temperature field show a range of elemental assemblages consistent with temperature zonation around the vent. The needs of the on-going basic maintenance operations and proposed enhancement and hurricane protection projects in the City of Virginia Beach exceed the capability land-slide sources of sand. Through the past several years our studies have concentrated on locating and defining suitable quantities of sand appropriate for use on the area's beaches and assessing some of the consequences of dredging in shallow offshore areas. By providing information concerning the geological setting of sand resources, the local wave climate, and benthic infauna, the overall research project has strengthened the knowledge and understanding of several facets of Virginia's inner continental shelf. We have identified three distinct settings for deposits of beach-quality sand, two of which (filled channels and surficial shoals) are distinguishable in relatively unprocessed sub-bottom profiles and cores. The third, a sand facies within a larger stratum, is discernable only with a suite of cores. Sandbridge Shoal, about 5 km offshore of the resort and residential community of Sandbridge appears to contain a substantial quantity of sand that could be exploited with comparatively few problems. It already is designated as the source of material for use in a shoreline protection protect for a federal facility. Fluvial(?) fill of a late Pleistocene channel lust offshore of the main, commercial, resort area may offer a proximal alternative to existing and proposed resources. Ongoing work to describe the local wave climate and the possible impacts of anthropogenic alterations of the bottom topography on wave transformation and studies of the biological community as it might be affected by dredging will help fill-out our series of studies. Prior to utilization of the resource additional work is needed to provide better definition of the limits and magnitude of the sand bodies. Finally decisions concerning the use of specific resources will have to include physical, biological, economic, technical, and social considerations.

Despite the very large offshore Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) area of Greenland (in excess of 2 mill. km2) virtually no work has been carried out on marine minerals on the ocean floor. Apart from a single reconnaissance survey by a mining company, major activities have been those of oil companies exploring the West Greenland shelf in the early seventies. The West Greenland shelf and its extensions is the most obvious area for year-around accessability when looking for marine mineral deposits. So far, only one onshore placer deposit has been found - ilmenite deposit near Thule, NW Greenland, whereas a gold placer in South Greenland presently is being evaluated.

"Co-rich ferromanganese crust deposits exist on slopes, summits and platforms of seamounts and guyots throughout the global oceans, where deep-sea currents have kept the seafloor structures more or less free of sediment for millions of years. They form by direct precipitation from cold seawater under more or less oxic conditions and consist of thin layers (2 up to 25 cm thick) covering hard substrate rocks in water depths of 800 to 5000m (Halbach and Marbler, 2009; Hein et al., 2000). Besides Mn these crusts contain interesting concentrations of minor elements (Co, Ni, Ti and Cu) and trace elements (Mo, W, Te, Ga, Pt and REEs), thus they represent significant metal deposits and promise potentially valuable additions to the world’s metal resources.The prospects for mining of this marine type of metal deposits largely depend on the grades and the scale of the potential ore resources. However, only a few percent of existing seamounts and guyots have been mapped and sampled in detail, most of them in the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, a model to estimate the geological resources based on the global seamount catalogue of Wessel (2001; revised: Wessel et al., 2009) and the empirical parameters which control the metal composition and distribution was developed."

Hydrothermal mineralization along slow-spreading oceanic ridges and rift -zones that comprise more than half the global length of the seafloor spreading center system is related to anomalous physical and chemical conditions acting within the geologic settings that characterize early and advanced stages of opening of an ocean basin. Mineralization in the early stage of opening is represented by the Atlantis II Deep of the Red Sea. There, hypersaline hydrothermal solutions discharging as density stratified brines into an axial basin, have formed the largest massive sulfide deposit (70 x 106 metric tons) known at a spreading center. Mineralization at the advanced stage of opening is represented by two types of sites: (1) oceanic crust on the wall of a rift valley; and (2) oceanic crust exposed on the wall of a transform fault zone. The first type of site is the TAG Hydrothermal Field, located on a wall of the rift valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at the top of the basaltic layer of oceanic crust. Evidence is presented for multi-stage, high- and low-temperature hydrothermal activity that produces Cu, Fe, and Zn enrichments within the thin sediment column and stratiform interlayered deposits of manganese oxides, iron oxides, hydroxides and silicates, on the seafloor. "INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts are a kind of marine chemical sediment composed of Fe and Mn oxy-hydroxides as well as small amounts of clastic sediments, which are ubiquitously found on the surface of slopes of seamounts and oceanic plateaus at depths from 900 to 5500 meters below sea level (mbsl). Fe-Mn crusts contain extremely high concentrations of useful minor metals such as Co, Ni, Te, REEs, and thus are expected as submarine mineral resources. Also, Fe-Mn crusts record the change of chemical compositions of seawater during last several tens million years, which allow us to obtain clues to clarify the paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of its deposition. However, occurrence, chemical compositions, microbial community and growth patterns of ferromanganese crusts are yet fully understood. Hence, a comprehensive study on the genesis of ferromanganese crusts, such as growth rates and enrichment processes of elements, is required to better understand their resource potential as well as their applications to paleoceanographic study.Based on the resource potential of ferro-manganese crust, the project entitled “Next- Generation Technology for Ocean Resources Exploration” was launched as one of the governmental projects to develop the exploration technology based on the scientific research on the submarine resources such as hydrothermal deposits (e.g., a poster by Kawada et al.), ferro-manganese crusts. We have made several research cruise to seamounts in the north-western Pacific such as Takuyo-Daigo and Takuyo-Daisan seamounts (Fig. 1) ."

INTRODUCTION Due both to the political history of UNCLOS and the sensitivity of the ocean floor and environment to man made impacts, both the Convention (including also the 1994 Amendment) and subsequent codification (such as the ISA draft code on Exploitation of Mineral Resources in the Area) put a focus on information about, and conveyance of, technology employed by interested deepsea mining companies, to inter alia the Authority and developing countries. In contrast, companies usually are (or by their nature should be) interested in safeguarding their technology and business secrets in order to secure unique selling propositions in a competitive environment. On the background of the meanwhile maturing regulatory régimes on deep sea mining, the presentation will look into some of the key regulatory provisions mirroring these apparently antagonistic interests, how the players involved could deal with them, and how they might in some cases be reconciled. Progress of Presentation The presentation will start by briefly examining some classical methods of protection of technology, such as patents, copyrights, and (not the least) secrecy. It will be found that some of the statutory means of protection due to their territorial character may face problems in being implemented in areas outside national jurisdiction, such as the Area, but that, thinking globally, they nevertheless retain much of their value for the purpose of protection. Depending on available presentation time, a model case may be used to illustrate the above – and also some of the following – findings.

"Germany, like several other countries, has entered a contract with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to explore the prospects of commercial manganese nodule mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). Ensuring a maximally sustainable deep-sea mining operation requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts associated with every step of the mining process from the extraction of the nodules at the seafloor to the refinery on land. Against this background, the project presented here applies a combination of scenario-building and life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and evaluate the sustainability performance of the individual process steps as well as the entire mining operation.Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive methodological framework that allows the identification and quantification of impacts occurring during a products life-cycle, as well as the analysis and evaluation of their contribution to pre-defined impact categories, such as climate change, acidification and toxicity (Rebitzer et al., 2004). Until now, LCAs with a focus on raw material extraction have almost exclusively been applied to terrestrial processes. Noteworthy exceptions are offshore drilling, offshore wind farms and ocean fishing. Hence, the first part of the project is to investigate in how far LCA can be applied to deep-sea settings and if and in what way it could be adapted to be used in a deep-sea mining context."

The Norwegian EEZ contains large areas of interest for SMS exploration along the Mid- Atlantic Ridge, from Jan Mayen to Svalbard. At the same time Norwegian companies engaged in oil and gas activities are in the forefront of subsea development. This makes Norway ideally positioned to take a leading role within marine minerals research and commercialization. In the recent minerals strategy from the Norwegian Government marine minerals was pointed out as one of the strategic areas for the future. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology has established a research program in cooperation with Norwegian industry partners to determine the commercial potential of marine minerals in Norwegian EEZ. This presentation will give an overview of the status of marine minerals research and potential in Norway.

While direct study of high temperature hydrothermal activity and the associated mineral formation as well as study of their scales are possible in the modern ocean, researchers are deprived of such opportunity for past geologic time. Even in cases where hydrothermal deposits that formed in the geological past are preserved they have been covered by sediments or overlain by lava and have become inaccessible after a time for obser-vation and sampling. Rarely are these buried hydrothermal deposits found during deep-sea drilling or coring operations, and their direct study on an ocean scale is impossible at present. Even within hydrothermal fields, without special preliminary detailed surveys, the probability of intersecting hydrothermal edifices that are covered by sediments becomes a rare event.

The United States is dependent on foreign imports for about 80 percent of its ilmenite, about 60 percent of its rutile, and virtually all of its monazite. Nearshore marine sand deposits and beach-complex sediments in the southeastern United States are important domestic sources of ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, zircon, monazite, and a number of other less well known economic heavy-mineral (HM) species. Because global onshore reserves of placer titanium minerals may fall short of demand in as few as 20 years, offshore research in HM placers will become more important. The Atlantic Continental Shelf (ACS) defined by the shoreline and the 200-m isobath varies in width for the modern U.S. coastline from a fraction of a kilometer to about 150 km offshore of Cape Cod, Mass., and includes an area of about 3.91 x 105 km2. It probably contains 3-7 x 1011 m3 of sand and gravel which may locally contain commercially exploitable placer HM deposits.

The recovery of most minerals, which are amenable to gravity concentration, is standardly determined by accurate sampling and assaying. .With respect to particulate - gold ores, sampling and assaying are still the convention, but the accuracy and reproducibility of these operations are much discussed and debated points. Evaluation of gravity concentrators by conventional sampling and assaying techniques is very time consuming, costly and may introduce a large amount of uncertainty into the results due to the particulate nature of placer gold. These problems are not unique to placer gold ores and apply to any low grade ore with particulate values. A gravity concentrator evaluation process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (198Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator's product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems. Beginning in 1984, MIRL conducted radiotracer studies of unit processes, which included jigging, static wedge wire screening, elutriation, and concentration with compound water cyclones.

The topic area for this paper covers the United States portion of the northern Gulf of Mexico, extending from the Rio Grande delta east to the Florida peninsula. Declaration of an Exclusive Economic Zone in 1983 expanded Federal economic jurisdiction on the continental margins from 12 to 200 nautical miles seaward from the coast. The nation-wide area of the EEZ totals 3 million square nautical miles, with approximately 186 thousand square nautical miles in the Gulf of Mexico. In the Gulf, the continental shelf has an area of 81 thousand square nautical miles, extending to a depth of 600 ft. and having widths of 6 to 120 nautical miles. Specific areas on the shelf offer the greatest potential for containing aggregate and other hard mineral resources. The primary geomorphic features along the Gulf coast include: barrier islands, chenier plains, tidal inlets, bays and lagoons, estuaries, and deltaic headlands. These features are composed of terrigenous siliclastic sediments, except for the west Florida coast, south of 29°N latitude, which is dominated by carbonate sediments. On the shelf, the primary features are linear sand shoals and associated sand sheets, relict delta lobes and channels, and banks related to salt diapirs and coral reefs. The composition and distribution of sediments in these coastal and shelf features are determined by numerous geologic factors including: seabed topography; riverine sediment discharge; sediment dispersal patterns due to currents, waves, storms and tides; tectonics and subsidence; and repeated fluctuations in sea level.

Column flotation is a promising technique for processing as-mined, cobalt-rich, ferromanganese crust to separate the valuable crust component from barren substrate-rock, either aboard ship or within the water column. Column flotation testing was carried out in a seawater medium using samples obtained from the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the mid-Pacific Ocean near Johnston Atoll. The collector reagent was a mixture of diesel fuel, fatty acid, and sulfonate previously developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for crust flotation using conventional flotation cells. Results are dependent upon particle size and reagent dosage, especially *as these factors affect froth volume and stability. Column flotation results are compared with previous studies in conventional cells. An overview of how column flotation might be applied in an offshore mining and processing system is given.

The North Fiji Basin (NFB) is a mature intraoceanic back arc basin with an age of ~12 Ma. Recent volcanism and spreading activity are focused along the Central Spreading Ridge (CSR), A ridge segment more than 800 km long, composed of four main segments, the N160°, N15°, north-south (N-S), and southernmost segments from north to south. The dominant volcanic rock in the entire central spreading ridge is normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB), very similar to those emplaced along mid-oceanic ridges. Conversely, influence of an oceanic island basalt (OIB) source increases northward from 18°20'S. Several basalts which show a significant subduction-related component are also observed in the southern part of the NFB. Hydrothermal activity along the spreading centers of the North Fiji Basin was investigated by several previous works, especially by the STARMER project in 1989 and 1991. Both extinct and active hydrothermal vents are found on the N15° and N-S segments. In contrast, only traces of hydrothermal activity have been found on the N160° segment. Although high temperature activity and related massive sulfide deposit on the N15° segment was further investigated by several follow-up studies, no systematic survey for other hydrothermal sites was conducted after their discovery. In 2012 and 2013, KIOST performed two hydrothermal expeditions aboard the R/V Onnuri in the three targeted areas of hydrothermal activity along the CSR of North Fiji Basin. Major interest and investment in southern Africa's west coast diamond deposits have resulted in the development of various tools for sampling and mining in the varied geological conditions encountered. Namco's project progression from sampling to mining is discussed with particular reference to the ROV technology employed for both phases of the operation. The Namrod sampling tool was mobilised in June 1995 and following extensive sampling resulting in resource definition, detailed research, design, and engineering was undertaken to develop the NamSSol mining system in conjunction with SubSea Offshore Ltd., a Dresser Industries company. Mining operations commenced in early 1998. History of the background to the development leading to design criteria, engineering considerations, operational parameters and discussion of field performance are presented. The innovative systems employed by Namco represent significant developments in a rapidly expanding technological field.

Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE). Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, however no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27º51S / 63º56 E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at water depth of about 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. There massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed. These chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground and pathways for fluid circulation, respectively.

Ancient volcanogenic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au massive sulfide ores commonly have associated with them along strike and in the immediate hanging wall a distinctive sediment that is thin, usually cherty and metal enriched, and generally referred to as an "exhalite horizon" or "tuffaceous exhalite". Typical examplks include the 13 Ma tetsusekiei of the Kuroko deposits of Japan (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1983, Econ. Geol.) and the 2700 Ma contact tuffs of Noranda, Canada (Kalogeropoulos and Scott, 1989, Can. J. Earth Sci.) and Key Tuffite of Mattagami, Canada (Liaghat and McLean, 1992, Explor. Min. Geol.). Attempts to use trace element distributions as lithogeochemical guides to ore have been largely unsuccessful. Exhalites have been considered to be the products of seafloor hydrothermal activity that is peripheral to the main ore-producing vents. However, large actively-forming polyrnetallic sulfide deposits at the Explorer mid-ocean basalt spreading ridge (1 850 m depth) in the NE Pacific and the eastern Manus back-arc dacitic spreading center (1650 m depth) in the western Pacific have demonstrated that the exhalite horizons are more likely produced by fallout of particulates from the main hydrothermal plume. In a typical hydrothermal plume, grains of >27 µm represent up to 97% of the mass (although only 2% of the population) of the particulates and are calculated by Stokes equations to fall from the plume to the seafloor within a few krn of their source. The particles are primarily composed of anhydrite, barite, amorphous silica, iron oxyhydroxides and metal sulfides and oxides.
