Information and data necessary for research on improving methods of oil recovery from low-permeability reservoirs and for comparison and evaluation of performance of such reservoirs with those producing from more permeable sands were obtained. Core analyses, well logs, production tests, well stimulation techniques, primary and secondary production records, and data on two water-flood projects were examined for wells producing from the Bartlesville sand, West Avant field, Osage County, Okla. Overall recovery from the study area was generally poor with only 9.0 percent of the pore volume recovered to January 1, 1968. Larger fracture treatments (8,000 to 12,000 gal) could have resulted in an increase in primary oil recovery. Secondary recovery by water-flooding accounted for only 1.9 percent of the pore volume because of the inability to control the large volume of injection fluid that escaped from the flood patterns and the excessive volumes of water produced with the oil. Future waterflood development in other low-permeability reservoirs should include the drilling of new input wells, use of injectivity surveys to locate possible natural fracture systems, or zones of high permeability, and control of injection fluids by altering flood patterns and/or plugging of the more permeable zones.

Within the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) classification of metallnonmetal (MAM) mining, the number of independent contractor' employees has increased significantly in recent years. In 1985 independent contractor employee hours reported to MSHA accounted for 4.5% of all M/NM mining employee hours (excluding office workers); by 1994 that proportion had doubled to 9.0%. As a result, these workers now account for an increasingly significant proportion of fatal and nonfatal mining accidents. According to MSHA's statistics, annually computed fatality incidence rates (the number of fatalities per 200,000 employee hours) for independent contractors working in M/NM mining are consistently higher than those for operator employees. Over the five-year period from 1990 through 1994, 53 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on M/NM mine property (See Table 1). More than one third of these fatalities (36%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage; 21% were machinery accidents; and 11% percent were falling material accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 68% of all independent contractor fatalities occurring on M/NM mine property during these years. Clearly, current efforts to increase the safety of the mining workforce must also address the safety of the independent contractor employee. This report is a preliminary attempt to identify trends in the employment and safety of independent contractor workers by identifying which segments of M/NM mining are experiencing the greatest increases in the number of independent contractor employees and by examining changes in the rates and types of accidents in which these employees are involved. The purpose of this investigation by the Federal Bureau of Mines was to design and construct a fluorescent X-ray spectrograph for dynamic rate studies of selective oxidation in molten metals and to establish basic principles for interpretation of data obtained by this method. An X-ray spectrograph was constructed in which the sample holder is a resistance wound furnace; it was operated up to 800° C. in oxidizing atmospheres. No difficulties were experienced with the cooling or heating systems nor with the protective layer of mica around the X-ray tube window, even though the oxidizing surface of the metal is only 0.5 inch from the X-ray tube window, Means are provided for heating under controlled atmospheres for selected time? temperature cycles.

Coal mines that undergo self-heatings, and specifically mines that sustain both floor heave and self-heatings, would benefit from the use of sealants to minimize air ingress to susceptible areas. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) evaluated three sealant systems for this purpose, bentonite-water mixtures, silicate gel, and guar gum gel. The guar gum-based gel was the only sealant that possessed the desired properties of elasticity, ease of preparation, adaptability to the mine, and a long life. In addition, since the gel consists mostly of water, it could quench or cool nearby heatings. Optimal formulations were determined in laboratory tests, and then tested in the USBM Safety Research Coal Mine. Two for-mulations resulted in stable gels that lasted for at least 12 months in the mine. Semicontinuous preparation of gel using an eductor was evaluated and appears feasible. Although guar gum gel is expensive, selective use to prevent heatings in specific areas would be cost-effective, both in terms of productivity and enhanced mine safety.

This Bureau of Mines report presents the initial development of a two-dimensional method of analysis for inclusions in plates in which the deformed shape of an open hole and the separate structural behavior of inclusion and plate with hole are used to obtain the stresses and strains in the inclusion only. In this report the solution for a circular inclusion is presented because a direct verification of the results with previous solutions was possible. The numerical results were in exact agreement with those obtained with the equations of Sezawa and Donnell. The equations developed are less complex than those of Sezawa and more general, for a circular inclusion, than those of Donnell. Stresses and strains in the inclusion are in terms of the elastic constants of the inclusion and the plate and the biaxial stress field applied far away. The elastic constants can be all different. An important conclusion from this work is that a difference in Poisson's ratios between inclusion and plate may be as important as a difference in Young's moduli between inclusion and plate in producing the inclusion effect. Many problems in mining and rock mechanics can be treated as inclusion problems. The understanding of inclusion behavior on a physical basis should provide the solutions to some of these problems.

"This paper presents an apparatus and procedures to implement a methodology for controlling ambient air quality in a confined working environment, such as an underground mine, an underground storage area, or a tunnel. The air quality control methodology is directed at limiting the quantities of exhaust pollutants emitted by diesel-powered vehicles into the confined space by identifying vehicles that are excessive polluters. The methodology is based on tailpipe and ambient air measurements in the confined space, and the ambient air threshold limit values (TLVs) for the various diesel exhaust pollutants. The methodology consists of two computational methods; a deterioration criteria computational method to identify excessive polluting vehicles, and an engine performance computational method to determine engine performance and to provide information needed to diagnose engine faults. The methodology is designed for implementation in conjunction with a preventive maintenance program.The first part of the paper describes the mine air and tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus and techniques used to obtain data. This is followed by sections discussing the deterioration criteria and the engine performance computational methods. A section discussing some common engine emissions-related faults is also presented lastly, a proposed procedure to implement the methodology including a possible hierarchical structure for mine personnel involved to implement the procedures is presented.INTRODUCTIONDiesel-powered mining vehicles are gaining Popularity in underground coal mines and are almost universally used in underground non-coal mines due to their mobility, flexibility, and higher productivity. However, noxious gases and particulate matter in diesel engine exhaust are a concern because of the potential for being harmful to the health of miners. Diesel exhaust pollutant concentrations out the tailpipe of a mine vehicle change with time due to engine wear, inadequate maintenance, improper adjustments and other factors. This deterioration in pollutant concentrations, if not properly controlled, may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine. To provide assurance that a clean and healthful work environment are maintained, a program is needed to identify and repair diesel engines that contribute to poor air quality. Also, earlier detection of deteriorated engines will make preventive maintenance possible, thereby eliminating further deterioration and possibly complete breakdown. Preventive maintenance also increases engine life and equipment availability in production which in turn will result in decreased operating costs."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch beneficiation tests on a waste granite sludge from New Hampshire to determine the feasibility of recovering a reusable silicon carbide product. The granite sludge responded to attrition scrubbing, desliming, and flotation in either alkaline or acid circuits using fatty acid as a collector. Recovery of over 80 percent of the contained silicon carbide at grades of up to 96 percent SiC was obtained.

In recent years the use of visual aids has expanded the? field of safety education. This is a modern adaptation of a method employed in ancient times, when simple paintings and drawings were the only means of recording current events. In its present application, visual aid employs sound and silent motion pictures, stripfilms, lantern slides, descriptive posters, and color. According to Roberts,3/ "Visual education is a method of imparting information which is based on the psychological principle that one has a better conception of the thing he sees than of the thing he reads about or hears discussed." Dent4/ further defines visual aid as "all the materials used to facilitate the understanding of' the written or spoken word."

"INTRODUCTION The Farmer prospect was examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. As a result, studies of this property were included in a general preliminary investigation of the Etevens County lead-zinc deposits by the Bureau in 1945. The exploratory work was designed chiefly to supplement the surface examination by determining the nature of the mineralization below the zone of oxidization. The results of the small-scale diamond-drilling program undertaken at the property are presented in the following report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization our resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to security and economy. Determine the appropriate spacing and alarm levels for carbon monoxide and smoke sensors used for fire detection in underground coal mine conveyor belt entries. Background Fire represents one of the most severe hazards in underground coal mines. Early-warning fire detection in underground coal mines is essential to successfully implement and execute evacuation and control measures. Both carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors have the ability to provide reliable early-warning capability, provided that they are spaced properly and set at the appropriate alarm levels. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a series of large-scale experiments where a small coal fire was used to ignite a conveyor belt at air velocities of 0.76 to 6.1 m/s. The test configuration was purposely designed to model a worst-case fire scenario for fires that develop within conveyor belt entries in underground coal mines. During the tests, CO and smoke levels were continuously measured to determine alarm times and alarm levels as the fire intensity progressed. The data from these tests indicated that for a given sensor spacing, the time to reach a preset alarm threshold depends upon the belt entry air velocity and cross-sectional area. Analysis of this data resulted in the equations and nomographs for CO and smoke sensor spacing, and alarm levels contained in Bureau of Mines RI 9380, "Fire Detection for Conveyor Belt Entries."

Experiments were conducted to determine the optical scattering properties of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and various combustion aerosols from both flaming and smoldering combustion sources at discrete angles of 151 and 301 in the forward direction and at a light source wave length of 635 nm using a simple light scattering module. In addition to the scattering data, simultaneous measurements were made of the total aerosol mass concentration; light extinction at an average wave length of 546nm; and the response of a common bipolar ion chamber typical of residential smoke detectors modified to allow the aerosols to flow through the chamber. The results of these experiments indicate, for DPM and combustion aerosols, the intensities per unit mass concentration depend not only upon whether the aerosolis DPM or combustion aerosol but also upon the type of combustion aerosol. The results also indicate that the ion chamber responses are greatest for DPM, followed by the response to flaming combustion aerosols (FCA)and lowest for smoldering combustion aerosols (SCA). For light scattering, the greatest intensities are found for SCA, followed by the intensities from FCA, and lowest for DPM. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results to developed sign criteria for early warning fire sensor capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by the products produced from diesel engines. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Single- and two-stage tests were made with 6-inch, coal-cleaning hydrocyclones to determine the effect of hydrocyclone geometry, operating conditions, and feed composition on performance. Most of the testing was conducted in an open-circuit pilot plant that had a maximum capacity of about 9 tons per hour. The coals used in the investigation had top sizes of 1/4 inch and 28 mesh. Considerable latitude was found in the range of geometry variables that could be used without affecting performance adversely, although a certain minimum ratio of overflow to underflow openings had to be maintained for best operation. Two-stage cleaning proved distinctly better than operation with a single hydrocyclone, because clean coal lost in the refuse product of the primary unit can be partly recovered in the secondary. There is an unusually great difference in the specific gravities at which the individual sizes of the feed are separated in the hydrocyclone. This militates against high efficiency because maximum yield occurs when all sizes are cleaned at the same specific gravity. The size composition of the feed and, more particularly, the size composition of the impurity have a greater influence on the efficiency attainable in the hydrocyclone than in most other types of fine-coal cleaners.

An estimated capital investment of $76,499,800 will be required for a plant designed and built to produce 90 million standard cubic feet per day (std.c.f.d.) of synthetic pipeline gas through Lurgi gasification of bituminous char. This investment figure does not include the pretreatment plant, the cost of which is assumed to be reflected in the cost of the char fed to the gasification system. Shift conversion, C02 removal, and methanation are required after gasification in the Lurgi unit to make a gas suitable for pipeline transmission. Health surveillance efforts indicate that the development of lung disease and overexposure to respirable dust in underground coal mires continues to afflict mine worker. Results from the most recent round (1992 - 1996) of the Coal Worker's X-ray Surveillance Programs indicate that approximately 8% of the examined miners who had at least 25 years of mining experience were diagnosed with Coal Worker Pneumoconiosis (CWP) (category 1/0+). During the period between 1995-1999, mine operators and MSHA inspectors collected 9968 and 1365 dust samples respectively, from longwall designated occupation (DO) personnel. Analysis of these samples showed that 1970 (20%) of the mine operator samples and 25.8 (19%) of the MSHA samples5 exceeded the 2 mg/m3 dust standard. The continued development of CWP in coal mine workers and the magnitude of respirable dust over-exposures in longwall mining occupations illustrate the need for improved dust control technology on longwalls. Figure 1 illustrates the major longwall dust sources as determined in the early 1990's.4 This article describes the ongoing research to find ways to minimise shearer dust levels as a function of changes in dust control parameters, and research to determine the impact of high air velocities on shield dust entrainment.

The method of analysis was to test a large model containing potentially significant variables and on the basis of the results obtained, to reduce the model to one containing only the essential significant variables. This stepwise procedure of "scanning" a large proposed model and subsequently condensing the model consisted of two cycles of the same series of computational procedures. Data Preparation A majority of the variables measured were continuous over a specific range of values; for example, the variable "Width Ratio" varied in practice from 0.25 to 1.00. However, "dummy" values were assigned to certain operational variables in order that these varia¬bles would have numerical expression. The following variables were described in this manner. This paper reports determinations of heats of formation (from the oxides and elements) of crystalline cadmium metasilicate and crystalline lead meta-silicate by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry. The results, in conjunction with known entropy values, yield free energies of formation. There are no earlier data of this type for cadmium metasilicate. The results of this investigation for lead metasilicate deviate from the literature values (which are less reliable) in the direction of increased thermodynamic stability. Both cadmium and lead metasilicate are much less thermodynamically stable with respect to their constituent oxides than are the corresponding compounds of the alkaline earth metals.

Coal bumps have presented serious mining problems in the U.S. throughout the 20th Century. Fatalities and injuries have resulted when these destructive events occur at the working face. Persistent bump problems can result in abandonment of large reserves or lead to premature mine closure. Through the years, alternative techniques such as artificial supports, extraction sequencing, destressing, pillar design changes and specific pillar retreat practices have been successfully implemented to mitigate coal mine bumps. Several techniques have evolved for room-and-pillar operations that control the way the roof rock breaks, regulating the manner in which stresses are redistributed in the mined section. Special mine layouts employed in longwall mines have also proved to be successful in safely redistributing or containing excessive loadings. However, with ever increasing production rates, greater overburdens and new mining systems, the need to evolve even more effective bump control designs will continue to challenge the U. S. coal mine industry.

The study of neutrinos?particles infinitesimally smaller than atoms?would be significantly advanced if a deep underground facility were available that would filter out unwanted cosmic radiation. Encouraging progress has been made in satisfying the criteria for such a facility with the selection of the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, by the National Underground Laboratory Committee as the recommended site for a National Underground Science Laboratory (NUSL). The Homestake Mine is America?s oldest and deepest underground mine, and its well-maintained infrastructure to depths of 2438 m below the surface makes the mine an excellent site for such a laboratory. The investigation reported here is an initial study of the stability of the first of the proposed chambers. A cylindrical room with a dome-shaped roof and floor was analyzed in three dimensions using the finite-difference program FLAC3D. The results were compared to recommended support requirements based on Barton?s Tunneling Quality Index, Q. Based on model results and observations from previous mining studies, large rooms with 50-m roof spans can be constructed and will remain stable at 2141 m below the surface in the Poorman Formation when the rock is reinforced with cable bolts. Construction may be possible at lower levels in the Yates Formation if more extensive laboratory strength tests confirm initial results.

This report summarizes the results of several field tests conducted by Collins for the Bureau of Mines under contract SO122076 and contract H0232056. The field projects represent a part of Collins continuing effort on a broad study of coal mine communications. These experiments analyze the propagation characteristics of radio signals in a working coal mine environment. The intent of the program is to provide basic propagation loss characteristics by which we may evaluate various approaches to an integrated mine communications system. The goal of such a system is to satisfy both operational and emergency communications needs in the mine. Field testing was conducted during the last week of November 1972, at a coal mine operated by Inland Steel Company, near Sesser, Ill, and in the Robena No. 1 Mine, Waynesburg, Pa, on 12 March 1974. The tests included uhf propagation losses and noise (200 MHz to 1 GHz) in the Sesser, I11 mine location and vlf propagation loss and noise (1 to 200 kHz) in both of the above locations. The basic experimental parameters were frequency, polarization, antenna type/orientation, and distance. The following reports treat the various aspects of the test programs in detail. Since different antenna configurations were used in the two mines, each report contains its own experimental predictions drawn from its corresponding test activities. A test equipment list and block diagrams of typical experimental setups for the tests of section 2 are contained in appendix A.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of HCI concentration and solution temperature on the solubility and crystal form of the chlorides of Co, Mn, and Ni when sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increasing HCI concentration in solution caused the chlo-rides of Co, Mn, and Ni to crystallize (salt out) because of the common ion effect. The salting-out crystallization was most effective for NiCI2, which had a solubility of 0.7 pct at 20° C and maximum HCI concentration. COCl2 salted out to a minimum solubility of 9.4 pct at 20° C and 22 pct HCI concentration and increased in solubility at greater HCI concentrations because of the formation of chloride complexes. MnCl2 was intermediate in behavior. The effect of temperature on solubility was greatest for CoCl2 and least for NiCI2, 15 and 7 pct change, respectively, over the temperature range of 20° to 60° C. The salted-out chlorides of cobalt and nickel formed the hexahydrates and those of manganese formed the tetrahydrate in saturated metal chlo-ride solutions at 20° C and low concentrations of HCI. Increasing the temperature or the HCI concentration caused a 108s in waters of hydra-tion. At 60° C, the salted-out crystals of NiCl2 formed the tetrahydrate in HCI concentrations up to 18 pct and the dihydrate at higher concentrations, while cobalt and manganese chlorides formed the dihydrates, even in water.
