"Respirable high-silica particles from four coal mines. a clay mine and a tunnelling site were analysed for silicon vs aluminum composition by performing scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDS) at electron accelerating voltages of 20 kiloelectron volts (keV). The same particles were analysed at 5 keV to determine possible differences in surface vs bulk composition. In some cases high-silica particles exhibited a decrease in the ratio of silicon to aluminium K-alpha line intensities with decreasing electron beam accelerating voltage. This behaviour is consistent with aluminosilicate surface contamination or occlusion of a silica particle. Some 20 high-silica particles were analysed from each of 10 samples. Powdered aluminosilicate glass was used as a control for the behaviour of silica with a homogeneous distribution of aluminium in the particle. Significant differences were found between the control and sample means for an Illinois bituminous coal mine dust, two western and one central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. and a clay mine and mill dust sample, but not for an anthracite coal mine dust and two central Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine dust low-temperature ashes. INTRODUCTIONRESPIRABLE dust quartz content commonly is measured on bulk samples by using i.r. spectroscopy or X-ray diffraction. For research purposes, individual particle-by particle SEM-EDS analysis at 20-30 keV electron beam accelerating potential may be used also. Such measurements have not provided an unambiguous association of quartz content with occupational pulmonary disease prevalence in exposed workers (WALTON et al., 1977). Rather, there is evidence that coal rank modifies the relationship between dust exposure and pneumoconiosis development (WAL TON et al., 1977; ROBOCK and BAUER, 1990; ATTFIELD and MORRING, in press). SEM-EDS analysis was performed to measure the silicon fraction, Si/(Si +Ai), at 20 and at 5 keV on high-silica particles to determine if some respirable quartz particles generated by mining exhibit heterogenous composition with depth (WALLACE et al., 1990), which might affect the bioavailability of the quartz surface."

Video technology is becoming an important tool for many designers of industrial training programs. This report describes how trainers at the Minntac Mine, Mt. Iron, MN, have developed videocassettes of safe job procedures (SJP's) for training miners assigned to perform unfamiliar work tasks. All steps necessary for videocassette production, from idea to finished product, as well as the required equipment and prices, are listed and/or briefly explained. Minntac officials believe that the SJP videocassettes have contributed significantly to a reduction in mine accidents.

"The evolution during oxidation of the internal structure of soot and carbon black particles was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and an image analysis system. Increasing ordering to the carbon structure with increasing oxidation is observed. Measures of the increased order are increases in the fractional coverage of a cross section of the particles with a layered structure, a decrease in the mean interlayer spacing, and a decrease in the spread of the interlayer spacing. The changing structure of the carbon black impacts its properties, such as the rate of oxidation.There is considerable interest in the study of the structural changes of carbonaceous materials as a function of oxidation. Davis et al.1 measured the variation of carbon dioxide surface area of various coals as a function of residence time in a flow reactor. HRTEM measurements revealed that crystallite dimensions and interlayer spacings are altered by combustion. Ishiguro et al.2 showed that oxidation alters the structure of diesel soot. The aim of our current research is to develop a better understanding of the microstructural reordering of carbon blacks with implications to their properties. The carbon blacks used in this research have already been studied and their reactivities as a function of oxidation measured.3The methodology used in this work has already been described in detail elsewhere.4 This paper presents an application to quantify the structural changes of carbon black particles as a function of oxidation and graphitization. The technique used is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, chars, etc., possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure. The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic5 or as crumpled sheets6 to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of electron micros¬copy in studying the morphology of such materials has been well established,2,7,8 although only a few attempts toward quantification have been made.The sample observed was carbon black CB330 from De¬gussa. One set of carbon black samples were oxidized in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in air at 575 0C, so that the conversion varied from 0 to 96%. Another set of carbon black samples were graphitized (Graphpac-GB by ALLTECH) and then oxidized in the TGA at 680 °C until 92% burnout was reached. The latter samples are called GB 0% and GB 92%, respectively.For the HRTEM observation a small portion of each sample was ultrasonically dispersed in ethanol. The suspension was deposited dropwise on a copper TEM grid coated with a lacey carbon film. The examination of the samples was carried out on areas that extend over the holes in the supporting film in order to avoid interference from the amorphous carbon background film An oriented gold crystal was used as a calibration standard and subjected to the same techniques as the carbon black samples."

"Since its establishment in 1910 the Bureau of Mines has consistently recommended the rock-dusting of bituminous and lignitic coal mines as a preventive of widespread explosions. As with many other proposed innovations, the response to the bureau's recommendation has been slow; but during the past 10 years many coal mines have done some rock-dusting, even though probably fewer than 50 of the country's approximately 6,000 coal mines are thoroughly rock-dusted. Notwithstanding the inadequacy of the rock-dusting which has been done in most of the mines which have adopted the new system, numerous cases are at hand. indicating the well-founded basis of the bureau's claims regarding the effectiveness of rock-dust in stopping explosions. Very brief descriptions will be given of several cases in which explosions in coal mines of the United States are fairly definitely known to have been stopped by rock-dust during the past 5 or 6 years; in addition, several cases are cited in which explosions were stopped through the agency of rock-dust and moisture.A rock-dusted mine is one in which the floor, roof, and sides of every accessible working place, including haulage ways, airways, manways, and rooms and connections have an application of rock-dust - for instance, limestone - such that the incombustible content of the aggregate dust on those surfaces is over 60 per cent. The dust in these workings should be sampled at regular intervals to determine whether the incombustible matter in the coal-dust is less than the necessary minimum of 60 per cent; another application of rock-dust should be given when the incombustible percentage is less than 60. (As an example of thorough rock-dusting, see Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6578, 1932, which describes how rock-dusting is done in Alabama at a cost of 1.8 cents per ton of coal for a thorough application; Report of Investigations 3060, February, 1931, Rock-Dusting In A Pennsylvania Coal Mine; or Information Circular 6244, 1930, giving data, including costs, on rock-dusting in coal mines in New Mexico.)An explosion may be started by the ignition of gas, even when rock-dust is present; hence it is not correct to say that rock-dust will prevent an explosion of gas; however, if rock-dust has been applied to a working place which has present an explosive mixture of me-thane and air, and if an open light is used or a blown-out shot or an electric arc occurs, although there will very likely be an ignition and possibly an explosion, the rock-dust will certainly prevent ignition of the coal-dust nearby, and unless the general atmosphere has an explosive gas mixture, the rock-dust will stop propagation of the flame throughout the mine. In other words, if an explosion is started by gas or by coal-dust and the mine has been rock-dusted as defined, the rock-dust will prevent widespread extension of the explosion, unless the general atmosphere contains methane and air in explosive proportions.With these definitions clearly in mind, instances are now given where rock-dust has played a prominent part in the stopping of several explosions. No cases have been included where there was any reasonable doubt that rock-dust had taken a definite part in the limiting of the explosions."

In connection with tin strategic minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey under authority of the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., 1st sess.) a study is being made of tin deposits in the United States in an effort to improve the situation with respect to domestic supplies. These studies include sampling and exploration of some of the larger deposits with the objective of establishing emergency reserves, if possible to do so. Two exploration projects have been completed, and the over-all results obtained are set forth in this progress report. RESOURCES Tin was first discovered on this continent in 100 in the Temescal Mountains of what is now southern California. In the ensuing century, occurrences of tin have been reported in no less than 17 States and Alaska. Although most of these are of scientific interest only, tin-bearing veins and placers in California, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Virginia, South Dakota, Wyoming, Texas, New Mexico, and Alaska have been extensively explored, and largo sums of money have been expended in recurring attempts to exploit them.

A goal of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, is the advancement of minerals technology through the development of improved metals and minerals processing. In support of this goal, the Albany Metallurgy Research Center has developed atomic absorption spectrographic methods for the rapid analysis of A1203, CaO, Fe203, MgO, MnO, and Si02 in steelmaking slags. The application of these methods is discussed using an inexpensive pressure dissolution system. The overall coefficient of variation is 5 pct. The accuracy is the same as the reproducibility.

Investigations were conducted to develop spectrochemical methods capable of determining 0.01 to 100 micrograms of metals in 50 milliliters of solution. The use of gallium hydroxide (Ga(OH)3) as a carrier-precipitant to concentrate metallic ions is described. A porous-cup graphite electrode is used to collect the precipitate. A specially designed plunger permits the electrode assembly to serve as the sample-containing electrode in the subsequent spec-trographic analysis. Analytical curves are presented for antimony, arsenic, beryllium, and zinc. Sensitivities of detection are given for 13 elements. The techniques were applied to identify impurities separated from tungsten, to determine trace impurities in solutions containing high concentrations of magnesium, cobalt, or nickel, and to identify trace impurities in hydrofluoric acid. Laboratory glassware was a serious source of contamination when low levels of zinc were determined.

The Little Castle Creek chromite deposit was examined in February and May 1941, respectively, by W. O. Vandenburg and O. H. Metzger, engineers of the Bureau of Mines. The Federal Geological Survey started a magnetometer survey of the area in November 1940 and completed its work during April and May 1941. Field work by the Bureau of Mines was conducted during May and June 1941. The purpose of the Bureau of Mines investigation was to search for a continuation of the chromite mineralization. The property at one time was the largest chromite producer in California.

Provide a low-cost, low-maintenance method for im¬proving mine water quality on abandoned mine land (AML) sites. Approach A model (figure 1) is presented for selecting, designing, and sizing one or several passive mine drainage treatment systems that can be used in remediation of AML. The three principal types of passive mine drainage technologies for the treatment of coal mine drainage are an aerobic system, a compost wetland, and an anoxic limestone drain. The multistep approach presented here provides a simplified method to characterize the type and magnitude of the water quality problem and then to select either a single treatment system or a combination of treatment systems to address the specific site situation. How It Works Step 1. Discharge Characterization. Characterization of the discharge consists of measuring the discharge flow rate and collecting water samples at the point of discharge for chemical analysis. Both the flow rate and chemistry of a discharge can vary seasonally and in response to storm events. It is important to account for this variability by determining flow rates and water chemistry under various conditions. Water should be analyzed for pH, dissolved iron (Fe), alkalinity, and hot acidity (using the H2O2 method).

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. The effect of wind speed upon aerosol penetration into an idealized enclosure was studied The idealized enclosure was a painted plywood box that was 1 2X1 2 XI meters in volume Two fans supplied 1 7 m3 /min of filtered air to this enclosure at a static pressure of 2 8 mm of water The enclosure had a 7 5 cm diameter vent port which was isolated from the air flow around the enclosure To simulate holes in real enclosures, three 16-cm diameter holes were drilled on the front and back sides of the enclosure This simulated enclosure was placed in a tunnel-like structure The air flow from an ultra-light air craft was directed at the front of the enclosure The air speeds were varied between 14 and 36 km/hr as measured by rotating vane anemometer Static pressure in the enclosure was measured with an electronic manometer Two optical particle counters measured the particle number concentration of particles between the 0 35 to 0 5 µm inside and outside of the enclosure Aerosol penetration into the enclosure was computed as the ratio of the aerosol concentration inside the enclosure to the concentration outside of the enclosure The enclosure static pressures measured increase from 2 8 to 3 4 mm of water (P=00001) Aerosol penetration into the enclosure increased linearly with air velocity above 20 km/hr Theoretically estimated penetrations were correlated with observed penetration into the simulated enclosure When simple linear regression was used to model the observed penetration as a function of the estimated penetration, the value of the slope was 0 69±0 12 and the P value for the regression model was less than 0 0001 These results indicate that enclosure static pressure needs to be higher than the wind's velocity pressure in order to minimize aerosol penetration into these enclosures

"Engineering design involves, in addition to numerical calculations, considerable amount of expertise and judgement. The expertise and judgement is required to conceptualize and idealize the problem, select a suitable mathematical model for the problem and to interpret the model results in terms of stipulated design constraints. In recent years, knowledge based systems (KBS) have provided the capability to integrate the qualitative experiential and expert knowledge with ~he quantitative knowledge for improved analysis and design of systems. A possible KBS architecture for mine ventilation system design was discussed by Ramani and Prasad · (1987). The expert system (ES) component of the KBS supports the analysis and interpretation phases of the ventilation design process with an algorithmic program used for the solution of alternate designs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the data and knowledge needs for developing such a system and a formal means of their representation on the computer. A number of ES shells were evaluated to explore possible development and delivery environments for the system. A brief summary of this evaluation is also provided.INTRODUCTIONLuxbacher and Ramani (1979) have discussed the design process of mine ventilation systems and have provided the interrelationships that exist between ventilation, strata control, drainage and material handling systems and mining methods. They have also outlined the importance of correct analysis of the problem, choice of the right solution method and a rigorous interpretation of the solutions. The expertise required for analysis and interpretation phases was identified as the key element in developing effective and efficient ventilation system designs. Such expertise is embedded in the right choice of questions to be asked of the user as well as in directing the user to a wide array of alternative methods that may satisfy the design requirements. With advances in artificial intelligence applications in recent years, particularly expert systems, the integration of expertise into traditional mine planning and design algorithms has been facilitated. These planning and design aids, employing the integration of numeric and symbolic logic and called coupled systems, are powerful tools for engineers to tap the benefits of experts (Kitzmiller and Kowalik, 1985; Fenves, 1985). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the means of representing knowledge for the design of mine ventilation systems through the use of a coupled system. "The investigation discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain fundamental data on crushing and grinding and has been confined, so far, to work on quartz.The results of crushing or grinding have hitherto been judged entirely by the amount of the various-sized particles produced, based. on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns - a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished.There was a distinct need of a ""yardstick"" for the measurement of crushed material. It appeared that no advance in the fundamental investigation of crushing and grinding could be made without a reliable method of surface measurement and that such a measurement would have to be based on some property of the surface of the crushed material.A number of attempts based on various surface actions, such as adsorption and heat of wetting, were made to measure surface on quartz particles, but all gave unsatisfactory results. After some preliminary work it was decided that a dissolution method based on Wenzel's law-- ""the reaction velocity between solids and liquids is proportional to the area. of contact""4 -- would be the most feasible.Early use of the dissolution method had been made for surface measurements5, and lately Dr. Geoffrey Martin and his coworkers in England used the dissolution method to determine surface on quartz. They compared the amount of quartz dissolved from a sample in one hour by a hydrofluoric acid solution, with the amountdissolved from a measured quartz cuboid6,After investigating the solvent power of sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, and hydrofluoric acid for quartz, hydrofluoric acid was selected as the most suitable solvent, and a dissolution method was developed which gives very reliable results.During the dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid, the reaction velocity changes for two reasons: there is a change in concentration of solution, and a change of surface of the solid. The amount of quartz dissolved in a definite period of time is therefore not a true measure of surface. If, however, the reaction velocity or rate of dissolution for various periods of time be plotted, a curve will be obtained which, if extrapolated to the zero time ordinate, will give the rate of dissolution before any change of surface or any change in the solvent has taken place, and which is a true index of surface. This rate of dissolution, expressed in percentage of the original sample at the zero time ordinate, is designated herein as the ""Initial Rate"" or as simply ""I. R."""

"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

"INTRODUCTION The rock-bit interaction during the cutting process in underground mines has been a matter of great concern to mining operators, researchers and manufacturers, particularly after the passage of strict environmental laws. Coal cutting bears directly on airborne coal dust generation and rock cutting generates frictional sparks which may cause face ignitions, jeopardizing the productivity, safety and economy of the industry. It is imperative to investigate into the factors which have influence on bit we.ar. Hurt and Evans (1981) concluded that the point attack bits have greater ignition potential than the conventional wedge shaped bits, and also worn bits were more responsible for ignition than the new bits. The results of a study (Khair et al., 1992) suggested that after 7% weight loss, the bit should be replaced. The polycrystalline compact diamond (PDC) tipped bits are reported to be cost effective in a study done by USBM (Twin Cities Research Center), and it was stated that the PDC tipped drill bits had 80 to 100 times longer life than the ordinary tungsten carbide (WC) tipped bits.This paper presents the results of the experiments which were conducted utilizing a coal cutting simulator at the laboratory of the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, USA. The description of the machine and the experimental set-up have been described elsewhere (Khair et al., 1989; Gehi & Khair, 1994), and therefore, will not be discussed here. The rock types which were used in experimen~ are Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. The operating parameters include (1) drum speed, (2) water spray pressure and (3) bit type. Besides studying the wear characteristics influenced by the above mentioned variables, the effect of these parameters on the required cutting force, specific energy consumption, acoustic emissions rate and rise in temperature of the bit were also studied. A preliminary study was also done to compare we.ar characteristics of the WC bits with those of the poly-crystalline compact diamond tipped bits."

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following questions are frequently asked by coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any, of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when coal is stored? DISCUSSION (a) Loss of Heating Value Studies by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss of heating value of coal in storage commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh gas, and Sheridan (Wyo.) coals. The formation of A1203 dispersoids 0,14 and less in size in dilute iron-aluminum alloys by internal oxidation in wet hydrogen and dispersion strengthening of iron by application of the technique to iron powder were found to be feasible by the Bureau of Mines. In flowing H2-1.5 H20 gas, A1203 dispersoids 0.1w and less in size formed (at 650° to 750° C) in Fe-l and 2 Al sheet material but not in Fe-3 or 4 Al alloys. With higher temperatures and/or higher H2O/H2 volume-ratio gases, A1203 and FeA1204 dispersoids >0.14 in size formed in all the sheet materials- Minus 100-mesh Fe 2 Al powders were internally oxidized under conditions that promoted formation of fine A1203 particles in sheet material, and then the oxidized powders were hydrogen reduced, sintered, extruded, and evaluated. During internal oxidation, fine A1203 dispersoids formed within the powder grains, and coarse FeA1204 particles formed on the powder surfaces and grain boundaries. The FeA1204 content was essentially eliminated during sintering by reacting with the unoxidized aluminum that remained in the center of the larger internally oxidized powders. The tensile strength at 800° C depended upon the aluminum-oxygen weight ratio of these elements in the extrusions and reached a maximum of 17,000 psi. The stress-rupture strengths at 800° C of the better alloys were comparable with those of type 310 stainless steel.

This paper deals with truck haulage methods and costs at one of the many open-cut mines that are replacing rail haulage with heavy-duty trucks. At this mine, ore is trucked to a crushing plant, centrally located within one of the open-cuts.
