A novel method of extinguishing a mine fire in a stowed or gob-filled area by employing liquid carbon dioxide under high pressure eras used recently with success at the President (Prasident) coal mine, Bochum, Germany, as reported by P. Cabolet in Gluckauf (Apr. 24, 1937, p. 393) The use of carbon dioxide gas as a fire-fighting agent in surface plants and in ships is now general practice in the United. States, but when it has been tried for extinguishing fires in mines in large areas more or less confined by stoppings it has not been successful. Examples of the latter method of attempting to fight mine fires are given in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 229, Fifty-Nine Coal-Mine Fires; How They Were Fought and That They Teach, by G. S. Rice, J. VT. Paul, and 14. VT. von Bernewitz (1927). The reason for its nonsuccess may be either that the stoppings are not tight or that the roof and pillars are more or less fissured and enough air passes into the area to sustain a slow fire, whether of spontaneous origin or produced by gas explosion or other source of ignition.

The following methods have been selected from a large number tried while assaying several hundred samples of placer concentrates. It is thought that some of these methods may be useful to those who are required to assay similar products containing large quantities of metallic articles, such as jeweler's sweepings. No great difficulties will be encountered in assaying black sand from beaches or river bars. Such samples require care in grinding and sifting so that no oversize particles of gold or platinum are lost. It is also necessary to have sufficient silica in the flux to form a fluid slag with the excess of iron, magnesium, or chromium which such samples contain. It is much more difficult to assay black sands, or concentrates, produced in large-scale placer-mining operations. These products are usually much harder and more abrasive than the beach black sands. They also contain numerous metallic particles resulting mainly from wear on the mining machinery. These particles consist chiefly of iron or steel but also contain lead, copper, and alloys such as babbitt, solder, brass, ferrosilicon, etc. Fairly large particles of gold are often found. Some samples will contain as much as 10 percent of such metallic particles. It is not feasible to remove the particles of iron with a magnet and discard them, as they invariably contain gold, sometimes a considerable amount. This gold is attached to the iron particles by rust or wedged into cavities. Scraps of sheet iron are often found which have become tightly folded or rolled and contain gold or amalgam within the folds.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation, and the U.S. Geological Survey did a geological appraisal of an east portion of the Bear-Marshall-Scapegoat-Swan (BMSS) RARE II area (No. A1485) to provide mineral resource information for land use planning. The Bureau of Mines' investigation consisted of a library and field search for all mineral properties and occurrences, and included a review of Teton County mining claim records. Those records showed two placer claims, the only mining-related activity known in the area. Six reconnaissance pan samples were taken in the vicinity of the two placer claims, the Lone Star and Spotted Horse, located on Hannan Gulch in 1900 and 1901. One sample contained a trace of gold, but there are no identified resources. However, the study area is in the Rocky Mountain Overthrust Belt, which is productive for oil and gas elsewhere. The entire study area is blanketed by oil and gas leases and is currently being explored.

"INTRODUCTION Loss of life from coal-mine explosions in the United States in 1949 was the lowest in any year since before 1870. Although fatality reports from coal nines before 1910 were incomplete,' the explosion fatalities from single disasters or individual States exceeded the 1949 total in each year as far back as 1870, when the records become fragmentary. Since 1890, the only other year in which fewer than 35 were killed was 1946, with a total of 32. Figure 1 shows the total yearly fatalities from explosions in all coal mines and those in anthracite mines alone since 1870. The fatalities in bituminous coal mines were not completely reported before 1910, but enough reports were issued by major coal-producing States to compile reasonably representative figures back to 1885. Any corrections would be additions to these totals.The reason for the moderate total of 46 explosion fatalities in 1948 and the low total of 8 killed in 1949 is thought to be the serious and careful attention devoted to elimination of coal-mine explosion hazards after the disastrous explosions in 1947. The standards now being observed generally with respect to ventilation, rock-dusting, and inspections for gas are better than those found earlier in even the mines having the best reputations for safety. Exceptions are still numerous, but they are fewer, month by month, because of the pressure of Federal and State inspections and a changing conception of the hazards that should not be permitted underground. The prevailing precautions have not eliminated all ignitions of gas or dust, but they have limited propagation to small explosions and have prevented serious loss of life.The number of ignitions (14) reported for the year was less than the average (24) for the 5 years 1944-48 and only half the average for the fiscal years 1929-44. Another favorable factor is that Bureau of Mines representatives were probably in closer contact with both small and large mines in nearly all coal-mining districts. Inspectors now assigned to individual districts are better able to keep informed on the happenings and the progress of safety in their districts. In 1948, one-fourth of the explosions were in mines that employed fewer than 10 men; this condition was duplicated in 1949."

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on tunnel-driving methods. The practices described are those used at No. 11 mine of the Colony Coal Co., Denver, Colo. No. 11 Mine is situated at Dines, some 14 miles north of Rook Springs, in Sweetwater County, Wyo. It is served by a spur off the Winton branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. The Colony Coal Co.&apos;s mines were opened in 1918, and since that time have been among the largest producers of coal for the railroad and domestic markets in the Rock Springs coal district.

Annual global steel industry investment is partly mirrored in the data for selected market economy countries that appear in table 13 for 1988-90. No reasonably comprehensive 1991 data were available for inclusion in this study, and the partial reporting available was so incomplete that it was impossible to demonstrate whether the level advanced or declined from the 1990 level of nearly $15.5 billion. Moreover, with the radical changes that are now being effected in the steel industries of the states that were the U.S.S.R. and its CMEA partners, it is most regrettable that comprehensive and comparable data, both current and historic, on investment in this area are not available. Updated information on market economy country petroleum industry capital and exploration expenditures by geographic area has been included in table 14, and it is evident that there was a substantial upturn in investment in 1991. The level of almost $74.5 billion was 14.5 % above the 1990 level and included gains in every topical category and geographic area. The source of information for this table has been changed to the Oil and Gas Journal Database from the previously used Chase-Manhattan Bank study of Capital Investments of the World Petroleum Industry, which has been discontinued. Because of this source change, it has been necessary to modify the structure of the table somewhat, but its total scope of coverage is regarded as basically unchanged. It should be noted that the grand total, as well as some of the detail appearing for 1987, corresponds precisely with those in the previous source.

This pamphlet and the enclosed video describe a safe, effective and economical method for removing dust from work clothes. Background Information Dusty work clothes can increase a worker’s exposure to respirable dust. Respirable dust is usually considered to be particles having an aerodynamic diameter of 10 microns or less and able to enter and deposit in the gas-exchange region of the human lung. A former U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a 10-fold increase in worker dust exposure on a number of separate occasions from dusty work clothes.* It was found that once clothes become contaminated, they are a continual dust source until cleaned. The only MSHA approved method to clean work clothes requires a HEPA-filter vacuuming system which is very time consuming and difficult to perform effectively. Therefore, most workers use a single air hose (not MSHA approved) which can elevate dust levels for the worker, co-workers, and the work environment. A substantial amount of engineering technology has been developed that, when applied, can significantly lower respirable dust exposures of workers at mineral processing plants. But even with these improvements, some workers continue to exceed their permissible exposure limit. Elevated exposures increase the potential for developing debilitating or fatal lung diseases. ?e clothes cleaning method described within is an example of a continuing effort to reduce the potential for developing these lung diseases. Rock mass classification systems are extremely useful for site characterization and have been employed by the rock mechanics community for several decades. While empirical in nature, the classification systems provide a viable means to quantify the nature of rock mass, which is necessary for stability analyses. In U.S. coal mines, the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) is the most widely used classification system for several purposes, including sup-port selection, chain pillar design, assessing the stability of extended face cuts, etc. The Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) is an empirical method developed from the CMRR to guide selection of roof bolts as the primary support system in U.S. coal mines. In this paper, the experience of Peabody Energy in applying ARBS to sup-port design is discussed. In general, data from the Peabody mines show that ARBS predictions match well with field conditions. Peabody, however, does not use ARBS as the stand-alone methodology for support selection. Peabody uses a two-pronged approach in which the support requirement is initially estimated from the classification method, and then numerical modeling is used to select the proper reinforcement system. Such an integrated approach is necessary, as ARBS suggests only the “amount of steel” that may be used to support the roof and does not specify which type of roof bolt to use. A case study is used to demonstrate the usefulness of ARBS and Peabody’s integrated approach to support design. Also, the application of ARBS at several Peabody mines showed a very good correlation with support cost. The correlation indicated a direct relation between bolting cost and the ARBS value.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a research program to systematize the art of locating uncharted and lost oil and gas wells that penetrate coal seams; this publication presents a preliminary summary of its findings. Although no method or combination of methods will guarantee finding all uncharted and abandoned wells in a particular area, at least 75 percent of such wells can be located by compiling and applying all available information and using modern metal detectors.

The Bureau of Mines conducted drilling studies in the Pocahontas No. 3, the Pittsburgh, and a western coalbed to establish the gas migration characteristics for each. Gas pressures in the Pittsburgh coalbed were about 260 lb/in2 and in excess of 550 lb/in2 in the Pocahontas No. 3. Caving in drill holes prevented pressure measurements in the western coalbed. The Pittsburgh coalbed contained intersecting "clay veins" which formed gas pressure cells. Although these geological features hamper mining, they can be used to control the flow of methane into a mine working. Methane control techniques are proposed for the Pittsburgh and Pocahontas No. 3 coalbeds.

The Morongo Wilderness Study Area (WSA) is in south central San Bernardino County, California. U.S. Bureau of Mines examined the area during the fall of 1983. No mines, prospects, leases, or mining claims were found in the WSA. There are no known mineral deposits within the study area boundaries. Sand and gravel in the area is suitable for many types of construction uses, but similar and larger deposits outside the WSA are closer to markets. No energy resources have been identified in the WSA.

"In the fall of 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Mines began an inquiry as to the possibility of utilizing airplanes in conjunction with its rescue work, for quickly transporting engineers and oxygen rescue-apparatus to mine disasters.It was realised that this proposed use of airplanes has serious limitations, and if it were feasible, that the Bureau would have to rely on the cooperation of the established aviation fields of the U. S. Air Service for furnishing airplane service. Therefore Van. H. Manning, Director of the Bureau of Mines, under date of October 28, 1919, wrote the Director of Air Service outlining the rescue and first aid organization of the Bureau, the location of headquarters of district engineers, the distribution of safety cars and stations, and other essential details, and asking whether the Air Service could cooperate with the Bureau in the event of serious mine disasters. Major-General Charles T. Menoher, Director of Air Service, responded that the Air Service would be glad to cooperate insofar as possible, and designated those Air Service stations nearest the district engineers' headquarters, which might be best able to assist.The Bureau of Mines has ten mine rescue cars and eight mine safety stations distributed throughout the mining regions of the United States. The cars are each equipped with sets of oxygen mine-rescue breathing-apparatus and first-aid supplies. The car personnel consists of a mining engineer, surgeon, foreman, first-aid miner, clerk and cook. A foreman miner is in charge of each station and at five of the eight stations are mine safety trucks. The work of the cars and stations is two-fold; (1) Assisting in rescue and recovery work at mine disasters, and (2) training miners in mine rescue and first-aid methods, and in investigations looking to prevention of mine accidents. The country is divided into nine safety districts, with nine district engineers in charge."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the presence and extent of methane accumulations in mine roof cavities using a full-scale mine model. Methane was released at a constant rate into the roof of a cavity built onto a 700-ft wind tunnel. Two box-shaped roof cavities were used in the study: one had a volume of 114.7 cu ft; and the other had a volume of 57.3 cu ft. Methane concentration was measured at 28 sampling points in the cavities using 21 different combinations of gas emission rates and air velocities. Brattice hung in the cavity helped reduce methane concentrations without auxiliary ventilation. It was also found that the effective ventilation rate increased by a factor of 40 in the large cavity and by a factor of 20 in the small cavity when air velocity was increased from 100 to 600 fpm.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Information organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7. 1882 (22 Stat. 329), to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Minerals Information activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

Demand for arsenic trioxide increased markedly during 1984 as a result of increased use of arsenical wood preservatives and increased use of arsenicals in agriculture. The increase in agricultural demand was due to a return to production of land with-held from cotton planting under an agriculture program for acreage diversion for some 1983 crops. Supplies of arsenic trioxide were more than adequate to meet increased demand, and prices either declined from, or remained at, the low 1983 levels. In June, ASARCO Incorporated announced plans to close its Tacoma, WA, smelter by mid-1985. Domestic Data Coverage.-Refined arsenic trioxide was produced by two U.S. companies. The major producer voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines, but to prevent disclosure of proprietary data, the production data have been withheld.
