Modern ash handling systems exist in considerable numbers and a great deal of design and operating experience has been accumulated, It is the endeavor of this paper to point to a number of frequently recurring problems, A general appreciation of these problems will be helpful in both design and operation of systems. The light fly ash and the heavy bottom ash present different problems, and each will therefore be treated separately. Fly ash is collected in the ducting from the furnace to the stack and beneath the mechanical and electrostatic dust collectors. The greatest amount of dust is collected beneath the mechanicals and electrostatics. Hoppers are generally provided as integral parts of the collector. Suitable valves and piping are connected to these hoppers for removal of the dust. The size and shape of these hoppers are important factors in determining frequency of handling and the capacity of the system.

In situ or pre-mining horizontal stresses are arguably the least well understood of the principal inputs into underground coal mining geotechnical engineering design, whether analytical, empirical, or numerical. This is a direct result of both the cost and difficulty of obtaining meaningful stress measurements, the various limitations of the measurement method in terms of sourcing strata types that approximate the assumed conditions of the post-measurement mathematics to convert measured strains into stresses, and a common practice by some geotechnical professionals to preferentially utilise generic values rather than interrogate the available measurement data for cause and effect relationships between horizontal stress magnitudes, directions and a range of associated controls. That numerical modelling simulations attempt to mimic reality but often rely on simplified generic horizontal stress input assumptions is a particular cause for further consideratio The paper attempts to further explore the nature of in situ horizontal stresses using a range of stress measurement results from the Australian coal sector supplemented by several international studies addressing the same basic issue, the result being a number of credible and highly relevant “cause and effect" inter-relationships between the three principal in situ stresses in addition to the influence of rock properties (e. Young's Modulus and Poisson's Ratio), cover depth and the larger-scale structural geological environment. In particular, the paper demonstrates that despite being commonly overlooked as a primary rock/coal material property, Poisson's Ratio and the associated K Effect are intrinsic to understanding 3D in situ stress measurement results and therefore, predicting in situ stress magni- tudes more generally for geotechnical analyses purposes. As a fundamental question, the paper addresses whether it is necessary and of engineering value to characterise in situ horizontal stresses: according to distinct "domains," in the same way that more easily identifiable geotechnical properties such as rock mass ratings, coal seam thickness, ply splits, and cover depth are often treated.

There is one quick way to substantially reduce the operating cost of a great many pining operations. It is to cut the demand charge on the use of electricity and gas. Demand charge is the utility company's charge for the maximum rate of energy usage which is in addition to the charge for the total amount of energy used. Energy demand is reduced by prohibiting simultaneous operation of devices, especially those that consume large amounts of energy, or by deferring the use of such equipment as air conditioners from one demand period to a subsequent period. To achieve that end, a control system can continuously measure the demand and turn off selected loads in accordance with established rules. Because of the complexity of most industrial plants, a computer is the best means of storing, measuring, calculating, and controlling the many variables associated with the many devices involved. A computer system for that use has been developed by the Westinghouse Computer and Instrumentation Division in Orlando, Florida. For most applications, this demand control system can be installed and operated by industrial plant engineering personnel with no special knowledge of computer technology. It can be used with both electrical and gas service. For clarity, let us examine electrical demand first.

The Mesquite gold deposit is a recent discovery of Gold Fields Mining Corporation lying 65 kilo- meters northeast of El Centro in Imperial County, California (Figure 1). The deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the Chocolate Mountains and is a bulk-minable, low grade "disseminated" orebody. Although the host rocks of the deposit are part of a regional high-grade metamorphic terrane, abundant brittle fractures, brecciation, and open-space vein fillings indicate that Mesquite mineralization is epithermal. Faulting which postdates the hydrothermal activity has complicated the original geometry of the orebody. Alluvium effectively hides most surface expression of the mineralization, but open-pit mining is now revealing the details of Mesquite geology.

Pilot-scale tests indicate that effec¬tive concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% minus 400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concen¬tration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity -1.0 tph dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75.0%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

The mining of taconite, to provide feed for a processing plant, requires that the flow of material continue uninterrupted. This means first, that the crude must be of a size acceptable to the primary crusher in order to reduce the delays caused by plugging the crusher with chunks. Secondly, elimination of oversize in the pit will reduce costs of all wear parts used in the mining and processing of taconite. Savings in wear parts is readily recognized in dipper teeth, bases, buckets, truck boxes, and crusher parts, both primary and secondary. During the early days of taconite mining, it was soon recognized at reserve mining company's Babbitt operations that experience in mining other ores was not always (or ?necessarily??) Applicable to excavating taconite. This was especially true in drilling and blasting. Blasting of small tonnages in single or double rows simply filled the pit with scattered chunks and provided very shallow banks for shovel loading. It also created problems for the jet piercers, since all drilling had to be performed in fractured areas. Drilling efficiency suffered and costs were extremely high. Shovel and truck efficiencies were also low and again costs were high. A high percentage of secondary breakage was required. This necessitated the use of numerous man hours to jackhammer holes in chunks, preparatory to loading and blasting. After the chunks were reduced, bull- dozer and grader hours were needed to pile the taconite for acceptable shovel loading.

The employment of continuous rotary vacuum disc filters to filter refuse from the fine coal washing circuits has been increasing as it has become more important to close the water circuits and eliminate sludge holding ponds. This paper will discuss our past experience filtering refuse, effects of solids concentration in the filter feed, use of polymer flocculation aids, effect of flocculation devices, and effects of particle size and ash content on the filtration rate. Detailed tests were performed on existing installations utilizing coal refuse filters to determine optimum flocculant dosage, solids concentration, and disc rotation speed to form a dischargeable cake. Information was also obtained showing effect of flocculant addition on the moisture of the filter cake. Our test work has shown that the continuous filtration dry cake rates for fine coal refuse correlates very well with the data developed and presented by Silverblatt and Dahlstrom1 except that the curves have moved up the scale by use of polymer flocculant additions. These polymers were not available at that writing. Finally, our tests also confirmed the general premise stated by S. K. Mishra2 that controlled additions of polymer flocculants will reduce filter refuse cake moistures somewhat.

PDMI mines five different grades of ore. Shovel operators were experiencing problems differentiating one material type from another. In 1997 PDMI decided to try GPS ore control to aid operators in identifying material boundaries. Computer generated ore control maps and GPS data defining the shovels' position is fed to a computer on board the shovel. A monitor, located near the shovel operator, displays material types, their boundaries, and the shovels' position and movement in relation to the mining face. This information has reduced errors in material identification by 50%.

The basic principal in the ISL process involves the recovery of metal values by moving fluids through rock instead of moving rock. The process combines surface and sub-surface operations, with the economic performance controlled by four major factors; rates of fluid injection and production from wells; the rate of mineral solubilization; the volume of rock swept by the fluid; and the volume of solution processed through the system. This paper discusses various technical and economic parameters affecting these four factors and how they impact project costs.

The genetic characteristics of members of the genus Acidiphilium are poorly understood. As part of our study of the genetics of these bacteria, a search was made for an endogenous bacteriophage. Such a bacteriophage has been discovered. Several properties of the phage have been investigated. The phage has a lambdoid morphology and is somewhat larger than lambda. A variety of factors which affect phage stability have been investigated. The bacteriophage infects several of the strains that have been tested. Study of this bacteriophage should greatly increase our understanding of genetic mechanisms in Acidiphilium.

Three sedimentation ponds had their performance evaluated before and after installation of modifications. Each pond had a floating baffle installed, two had siphon outlets and one had a floating outlet device. Baffles inhibited short circuiting, and the outlet devices retarded flow following a rainfall event, and drained the pond creating a large storage volume to maximize detention time. Total suspended solids and settleable solids tests were run on samples of influent and effluent to evaluate pond performance. Particle size analyses were run on samples containing measurable amounts of solids. Performance improved in each pond, with baffles providing the major improvement. Through the entire surface mining process un- protected soil is exposed to direct rainfall and subject to accelerated erosion. Without controls, receiving streams would be "choked" by the additional sediment load. Several states, including West Virginia, require that sediment control ponds be constructed to trap the sediment before the water enters receiving streams. Even well designed ponds have exhibited difficulty in meeting effluent limitations. In a study supported by EPA, about half the ponds did not meet effluent limitations (1). There is a critical need to reduce sediment losses using presediment pond controls or by improving sediment pond performance. The objectives of this study were to evaluate modifications designed to improve sediment pond performance by; 1) monitoring three ponds prior to modification, 2) install floating baffles and 3) modify the principle spillway and determine the change in pond performance.

Computer simulation models of preparation plant operations and cost analysis have been used to determine the profitability of individual coals. The model's input consists of raw coal size and washability analysis, operating cost data, and raw coal and clean costs. The model's output predicts yields, qualities, costs and profitability for an individual coal.

The Fosfago phosphate rock concentrator is located in the state of Goias, Brazil, 300 km south of Brasilia. The ore is from an enriched carbonatite, which was discovered in 1971 during exploration for pyrochlore niobium ore. The flowsheet was developed in Brazil by personnel from Agrico Chemical Company and Consolidated South America. Engineering was provided by Codemin, a subsidiary of Consolidated, Engineering and construction management was pro- vided by both Agrico and Consolidated personnel who formed the Fosfago team. The concentrator was designed for 500,000 tpy of 37-38% P2Oj dried product. The facilities consist of open pit mining, crushing, stockpiling, and concentration. The product is pipelined seven km to a filtering, flash drying, and railroad loadout station. The plant was successfully started in May 1979.

One of the seemingly eternal problems with which we are frequently faced is that of providing adequate and economical warehousing facilities to store large quantities of bulk product. Seasonal consumption, transportation, marketing, and other factors very often dictate extensive product warehousing requirements for an operation geared for steady, year-around production of a material requiring weather protection during storage. Fertilizers such as potash and urea are examples of such products; the consumption of these materials is extremely heavy in the early spring at which time the materials must be placed in the soil, whereas, for obvious operating efficiencies, production is more or less constant for a given operation throughout the year.

Good morning, it is truly an honor to have been invited to speak before you today Before I begin my update on MSHA's activities, I?d Like t o quickly say a few words about the American mining congress and its mission in Washington, AMC is a national trade association representing most of the producers of the nation's metals, nonmetals and coal, we also represent the manufacturers of mining equipment and supplies and the financial and consulting institutions which service the mining industry. It is the diversity of our representation which gives us our greatest strength in our petitioning efforts, the administration and the members of congress know that an AMC position is the result of the careful consideration of a vastly diverse group of mining concerns. Our president, Al Overton, perhaps has the best description of AMC when he speaks of us as "the mining industry's eyes and ears and its collective voice in Washington."

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. Zeolite ores and protores occur in extensive deposits in the western United States. A recent paper1 describes the general geology and mineralogy of these deposits and their geographical distribution. The zeolites are alkali-and silica-rich varieties of mordenite, erionite, chabazite, phillipsite, ferrierite, and clinoptilolite. The zeolites were formed primarily by the alteration of Tertiary pyroclastics and in some cases by the alteration of Tertiary siliceous flows. The altered pyroclastics are of principal economic significance. The volcanic ash and tuff were deposited in restricted basins where saline lakes developed. The pyroclastic layers often are of uniform thickness and macrotexture for miles from the center of the basin and interfinger with detritals toward the edge of the basin. Thus, in addition to unaltered volcanic glass, the gangue minerals in these deposits include some combination of primary minerals in the pyroclastics, alteration products of the glass other than the zeolite of interest, and detrital minerals. The gangue minerals include quartz, cristobalite, tridymite, opal, orthoclase, micro cline, montmorillonite, hornblende, calcite, gypsum, thenardite, and iron oxides. The presence of one or two other zeolites in the layer in some cases also is considered as gangue. There are no quantitative mineralogical descriptions of these deposits in the literature; this: study was undertaken to obtain this information. As the zeolites occur as single crystals, crystal aggregates, zeolite-glass particles and in cemented aggregates, a method of study was chosen which would give the size distribution of the zeolite in these types of association. For this reason dispersion of the rock was achieved with a minimum of grinding action. This excluded those zeolite ores, silicified by hydrothermal altera¬tion which require grinding. A relative index of the ease of disaggregation of the zeolite ores thus is obtained, but the technique does not give absolute size distributions of the zeolite crystals. Samples were selected for analysis which do not necessarily represent the best ore horizon, but do represent a spectrum of zeolite occurrences from significant deposits. They are mordenite, erionite, and phillipsite from Rome, Oregon, clinoptilolite and chabazite from Reese River, Nevada, chabazite (and var. herschelite) from Bowie, Arizona, erionite from Jersey Valley, Nevada, and erionite from Pine Valley, Navada.

The process of roof drilling and bolting is one of the most dangerous jobs in underground mining. In the United States, roof drilling and bolting results in about 1,000 accidents with injuries each year. Researchers, from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are studying the feasibility of using a drill-monitoring system to estimate the strength of successive layers of rock and assess the integrity of a mine roof. Such a system would allow roof drill operators to be warned when a weak layer is being drilled. Using measurements taken during drilling, a neural network can classify mine roof strata in terms of relative strength. The concept has been proven in principle. This research project was undertaken to increase the safety of underground miners, especially those involved in roof bolting. The system should be applicable to the mobile drills now used in underground mines, and the system would likely find wider application as well.

The Trombetas bauxite deposits were discovered by ALLAN, as from the original work of the geologists Drs. E. E. GREIG and 3.A. STAARGAARD on the axis of the Amazon river, between Manaus and Santarem - (see fig. 1). With research licences obtained in 1965 by the SANTA RITA BAUXITA - a subsidiary of ALAN a group of Brazilian geologists, under the supervision of IGOR MOUSASTICOUSHVILLY, begins researches on the areas of Parintins, Juruti and Mathias with unsatisfactory results. In 1966, photographs obtained from the US Air Force and the Brazilian Oil Company PETROBRAS -, covering an Amazon region between Parintins, Santarem and north of Trombetas river, permitted the identification of a great number of plateaux between the Nhamunda and the Trombetas rivers. Based on this information, a research group has worked intensively from 1966 to 1967 allowing the discovery of the trihydrated bauxite in a quite large area. After five years of intense work and analysis of approximately 56.000 samples, near 500 million of tonnes of bauxite are evaluated on the several plateaux of the, area, thus insuring the commercial exploration of these deposits. Such discovery places Brazil among the detainers of the main bauxite stocks of the world and as a potential exporter.

Floor heave can be a major problem in large open pit mines. Unrestrained floor heave can lead to flooding, equipment destruction, slope instability and subsidence. It is particularly troublesome in coal mines where the floor is frequently relatively flat, and is often underlain by major water Searing units. This paper examines methods of analysis used in computing floor stability, and sets out a simple rational method of evaluating the required level of water pressure control to maintain acceptable floor stability. The approach is illustrated by reference to the stability of the floor of the Morwell open cut lignite project in Southeast Australia, where this approach has been used successfully for over a decade.
