Introduction In difficult times such as these, there is a strong reaction to the current way of doing things. Typical reactions that we have all heard are "There has to be a better way," "We're pricing ourselves out of business," "We have to improve our productivity," and "We have to have more cooperation," between union and management and employees and management. All of these comments have at their roots one common factor - getting the maximum amount for your dollar. The other factor inherent in these statements is productivity. I have not yet met a person in our industry who has not expressed the opinion that we should, and that we can, improve our productivity. Reducing Labor Costs In light of these factors I suspect we have all spent a fair amount of time examining our labor costs. For some of us, labor costs are a high proportion of our total cost of doing business. To alleviate the impact of these costs, we have generally done four things. We have reduced our number of employees, shut down operations for appropriate periods, sought concessions from union employees, and placed freezes on wages, salaries, and other benefits on nonunion employees. These approaches have been made to improve current shortfalls in our cash positions - to tide us over, as it were - or to provide us with a chance for survival. These are short-term measures that help to bring immediate relief, but can pose significant problems (or challenges), for the longer term. For instance, what do we do when times improve? How much do things have to improve before we do anything? By seeking concessions from unions in bad times, what do we do when unions come to us in good times? It is a rather sad and critical fact that we have grown too fat during the good times and too thin during the bad. In the first case, we have failed to optimize our earnings. In the second, we have cut ourselves too far. Consequently, when good or better times have arrived, we have had to bulk up our requirements to meet production commitments. In mining, for example, when times become tough, we tend to reduce our development plans so that when times improve we have to really "sock it to 'em," so that we can maintain productive capacities. We should plan ahead a little more to reduce the amplitude of our cyclical wavelength, so that in good times profits are optimized and in bad time we are better able to take the strain. Of course, forecasting cycles is not a refined art, but if we properly control our work force levels and costs at all times, and therefore optimize our productivity, we would be more able to withstand the problems we face today. Unfortunately, it appears that it takes bad times to bring us to a realistic appraisal of our way of managing our businesses. Labor Practices Not all of the problems now faced are due to low metal prices. Inflation has played a major role in bringing costs to a frightening level. Trade unions alone can not be blamed for high inflation levels over the past several years, popular though that notion is. Contract negotiations, after all, require two parties. Indeed, our current levels of labor cost are due to two factors: • We have felt obliged to keep our employees whole, relative to the cost of living. • We have felt obliged to maintain our competitive position relative to our peers, in order to maintain our ability to attract and retain a skilled, efficient work force. In the first case, our felt obligation has been applied without due recognition of the factor of performance, either in individuals or groups. Average, even mediocre performers, have been amply rewarded for their average work and mediocrity, while the good performers, no doubt receiving more for their good work and effort, have not perhaps appreciated the slight premium for their effectiveness. The rather predictable result of this practice has been that the average and mediocre stay that way (why change?), while some (certainly not all) of the good performers have said "It's not worth it," and slipped into the warm, cosy pool of the average and mediocre. In the second case, that of maintaining competitiveness with other companies' employees, we have compounded an already serious problem of lack of skilled tradesmen by paying higher and higher prices for the existing pool to maintain comparability without improving the flow of more skilled people through sound and sufficient training programs. We have the rather dubious pleasure of paying more and more for the same problems. Compensation is either mutually agreed, as with unions, or it is unilaterally applied, as with nonunion employees. Generally, there is more flexibility available to the employer when dealing with nonunionized groups than there is with unionized groups. Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

"This study adopts and analyzed a shield tunneling case in Taiwan, with a diameter from 5.25m to 6.70m and the smallest radius of curvature 100m, which was constructed in gravel formations as well as a vibration sensitive area. In this case study, a vibration monitoring plan, comprising the sensors inside the shield machine and on the surface, was proposed and performed to provide the vibration data during the construction. In this project, the major vibration reduction considerations were increasing the open ratio of the cutter head (to reduce the cutting function) and reducing the rotational speed of the cutter head. The results of the construction suggest the appropriateness of the above considerations. The findings could provide suggestions to the other similar shield tunneling cases. INTRODUCTION Underground vibrations during shield tunneling are typically isolated and absorbed by the soil. However, a portion of these vibrations may disseminate to the surface. These vibrations are considered micro-vibrations, which generally do not pose a threat to surface structures, and are thus seldom the focus of research. The present project was located in the Hsinchu Science Park where shield excavation bypassed numerous high technology manufacturing plants (e.g., wafer manufacturing plants). The vibrations generated by shield tunneling may affect the vibration-sensitive manufacturing equipment and instruments in these plants, and induce problems in manufacturing processes. Therefore, research to comprehensively understand the characteristics and potential influence of such vibrations is essential. To clarify the characteristics and potential influences of vibrations generated during shield tunneling, the vibration level in the excavation of the Taoyuan International Airport Access (TIAA) Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Project was examined, as it possesses similar excavation conditions to the present project. The parameters collected from relevant tests were provided as a reference to the firms along the excavation route of the present project to explain the effects of vibrations, and to relevant units for shield machine selection and project execution. No yield problems resulting from shield machine induced vibrations were reported by the firms, and the vibration levels measured in the present project were comparatively lower than those in the TIAA MRT Project. Because the related literature is scarce, this study aims to analyze the collected measurement data and provide suggestions on shield machine selection or designs. Such that we can more properly evaluate and control the impact of shield tunneling induced vibrations in similar projects."

Newmont has delineated a 600,000+ ounce gold reserve in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. This is a desert range underlain by Proterozoic(?) Tumco Formation (gneiss) intruded by Jurassic granitic plutons, and cut by low angle shears of the late Cretaceous Chocolate Mountain Thrust event. Gold, associated with pyrite, quartz veinlets, and propylitic alteration, is emplaced along low angle shears. The mineralizing system, enriched in tungsten, copper, zinc and arsenic, was active during Eocene time. Gold reserves are found in eleven areas as moderate to high tenor deposits that may be mined by open pit and underground techniques. Eastmaque Gold Mines Ltd. is developing the deposit.

A novel special magnetic separator was developed based on the special properties of precious metal-bearing alloy in highgrade nickel matte. The recovery of Au, Pt, and Pd was 77.79%, 84.79%, and 81.79% respectively at optimum operation conditions of magnetic separator feed of 2.5t/h, pulp density of 45%, and flush water of 1.5t/h, and the recovery significantly improved comparing with normal magnetic separator. Magnetic field simulation of the special magnetic separator indicates that magnetic intensity of 0.6 T can be generated on the surface of magnetic drum, which can strengthen the recovery of heavy alloy that contains precious metals. The alternate strong and weak magnetic field can also make magnetic particles rolling on the surface of drum, which will reduce the generation of magnetic agglomeration to a large extent and decrease the content of impurities in magnetic concentrate.

In most open pit gold mines ore waste selection is based on estimates made from blasthole samples. These estimates frequently are biased. While it is true that high grades and "outliers" can induce a bias they may not be the only reason for the persistent bias seen at many mines. This paper focuses on a source of the conditional bias. In this paper it is shown that the poor blasthole sampling can cause a conditional bias in the estimates.

Filters and absorbents purify, clarify, and clean many types of liquids by removing solid particles. In addition, absorbents provide a convenient way to handle liquids and to clean up liquid wastes or spills. Filtration or absorptive processes are accomplished either in a mechanical way, as in absorption and filtration, or in a chemical way, as in adsorption. In filtration, minerals and rocks used as filter mediums are extensively utilized in applications requiring the filtration of high volumes of liquids. End use applications include liquid food products, waste waters, petroleum and chemicals, and drugs and pharmaceuticals. Upon closer examination of all of the materials used as filters and absorbents, industrial minerals and rocks represent only a small proportion of the total amount, as shown in [Fig. 1] (Rees, 1991). Given all the industries that use these minerals, most of the volume is concentrated in a few major end-use markets. Within these major end-use markets, a handful of minerals account for most of the total volume and value. The focus for this chapter will be to discuss the industrial minerals and rocks used as filters and absorbents in the most important markets. The selection of the minerals and markets to review is solely based on the total volume of material used and in special cases, those where the value of the market and material is high. The major materials include diatomite, perlite, sand, gravel, and such specialty clays as montmorillonite and attapulgite. These materials are mainly used for the filtration of food, chemical, and petroleum products. In addition, they are used as absorbents for pet litter and oil and grease spills, and as carriers for pesticides and fertilizers.

In relating geology and mineral resources to the nongeologist engaged in planning and zoning, a major hurdle to overcome is often the concept of natural resources. Statements listing such "resources" generally include and often may he limited to such items as "open space", "buildings of historical value", "forest and wilderness areas", and "sites of natural beauty" but seldom mention minerals even where they are of significant economic importance to the area. Unfortunately, mention of mineral resources is often limited to statements calling for tight controls on mining to prevent "ravaging of the land". While, the concept of sequential use involving mining is sometimes acknowledged, it is frequently done in such a manner that this approach is discouraged. In the conflict for land between urban development, recreational open space and mineral extraction, far too often the mineral industry will be the loser. In Missouri, there have long been continuing requests for geologic and resource data for planning purposes from city and county government and from Federal agencies for inclusion in the various river basin studies and Soil Conservation Service projects. These reports vary in detail from concise statements of the geology of an area to rather lengthy reports on mineral and water resources, bed rock and engineering geology characteristics. In most cases, these reports as written were directed to a geologically-oriented reader. Our initial approach to presenting geologic data to the land-use planner was in the area of engineering geology with attempts to show the limitations that bedrock and soil conditions can place on development. In recent years, diminishing supplies of high grade ores and increasing consumption of mineral and metal products have demanded high efficiencies in extraction processes. The rising cost of energy has influenced plant operating policies. Rather than merely processing as much ore as possible, other process factors are being considered in process analysis, with energy consumed per ton of product produced taking on increased importance. Alternate processes and more efficient plant design may satisfy part of the demand placed on the mineral processing industries. However it is expected that the improvement of existing operatives will be responsible for most of the gains in efficiency in the short term. Even slight improvements in process efficiency lead to significant cost saving. Grinding, for example, is an inherently energy-intensive process. Grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high and it is essential that circuits run as efficiently as possible. In flotation plants, low-grade ores demand optimum recovery of valuables to maintain overall metallurgical efficiency. The use of modern data, treatment methods and systems analysis provide the means to achieve many goals, previously beyond reach. The design of more efficient plants and the evaluation and. improvement of existing plant operations constitute the general area of process analysis. Process analysis can be used to identify the capacity available in a process unit in some cases. In other cases, the goal may be to investigate alternative equipment configurations for an existing plant for possible improvement in efficiency. This goal is virtually impossible to achieve using plant data alone. A simulator of the process units involved can provide an excellent basis for performing the required process analysis.

The safe and economical storage of tailings generated by modern day mining operations is possibly the single largest challenge faced by miners today. By nature, tailings are a waste product that have little to no economic value. Yet, their physical and chemical contents can pose incredible environmental hazards if not stored correctly. The variety of factors that are met when designing Tailing Storage Facilities (TSFs), means that in most cases, a low-cost solution is sought to accomplish storage, meet environmental regulations, and adhere to industry best practices. TSFs can be large dam face structures or smaller structures like retention/evaporation lined ponds. Water management is potentially the single largest factor that miners and designers must contend with when constructing a TSF. Water is a necessary component in the process of extracting ore but can be difficult and expensive to remove once it is mixed with solid tailings particles. As a result, the most common disposal of these water containing tailings, called a slurry, is to simply discharge into an embanked TSF (Vick, 1990). These structures, just like any other water retaining dam, can breach releasing contents downstream. Despite modern advancements in TSF design, there have been numerous dam failures that have resulted in tragic loss of life and ecological devastation. Most notably in the last decade, the Brumadinho and Mariana Dam disasters in Brazil killed 278 people in downstream communities when TSF dams failed in 2019 and 2015, respectively (Rotta at el., 2020). Similarly, in 2014, the Mount Polley tailings spill in British Columbia was the second largest tailings spill on record and caused extensive damage to adjacent watershed ecosystems when the TSF embankment was breached (Byrne at el., 2018). While there were indeed numerous unique and underlying factors present in each of these structural failures, a shared element in the devastation was the large-scale release of unstable liquefied tailings

The South African Mining, Extraction, Research, Development and Innovation (SAMERDI) strategy was launched in 2019 with the goal of modernizing the mining industry. It comprises three major research initiatives: improvement in the efficiency of extraction and health and safety in current mining operations, development of fully mechanized systems to mine narrow tabular ore bodies in hard rock, and development of extraction systems to break rock without using explosives. The crosscutting Advanced Orebody Knowledge (AOK) program seeks to develop and implement drilling and geophysical technologies that can characterize the rock mass ahead of mining and identify potentially hazardous geological features. This knowledge will be integrated with information derived from seismic monitoring. Mining methods, layouts and rock support systems will be adjusted accordingly to mitigate the risk of rockbursts. Boreholes are routinely drilled ahead of mine workings using diamond-impregnated bits. The drill core is logged to identify lithology and geological structures (especially dykes and faults that may be seismogenic), sample the ore body for grade control, and detect areas that may contain water and/or flammable gas. Methods and technology to improve the efficiency of drilling and maximize the information obtained from the drilling process, borehole core, and the borehole itself are being investigated. A range of geophysical technologies are being developed to map the rock mass from the skin of the excavation to a distance of several tens of meters. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is used to map the geometry of the excavation, including prominent joint, vein and fracture sets and the presence and performance of rock support elements and systems. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is used to penetrate deeper into the rock mass and image joints, fractures bedding planes that influence the stability of the hanging and side walls. Image processing techniques known as ‘seismic attributes’ are being applied to the radargrams to improve interpretation. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and various active and passive seismic techniques (e.g. Tunnel Seismic Profiling (TSP), ambient noise tomography) achieve even greater penetration into the rock mass. Finally, machine learning is used to improve the processing and interpretation of seismic and radar data.

Fujiwara Quarry had been operated by the "Glory-hole Benchcut" mining system. But because it became difficult to meet the expanding demand by this system, "Central- shaft MCP" mining system was introduced in 1979. This MCP is equipped with a hydraulic walking system manufactured for the first time in Japan. Nowadays "Central-shaft" mining is the common method at limestone quarry in Japan. In this method crushing facilities are usually installed at the bottom of the shaft. But at this quarry, MCP was adopted and installed on the quarry surface. Many MCPs are operated in foreign countries, but in Japan few examples exist. Normally, Japanese limestone deposits lie in high mountains, which is obviously inconvenient for MCP to walk in and around the quarry. This difficulty, however, was overcome at this quarry, and MCP has been operated satisfactorily and efficiently for about 2 years after it was installed. In order to overcome the difficulty, in "Cen¬tral-shaft MCP" mining system, two mining methods are employed, the one is "SLICE-DOWN" mining method, and the other is "BLOCK-CUT" mining method.

"A three dimensional nonlinear finite element model was constructed to simulate and analyze the behavior of large diameter segmentally lined shafts when subjected to seismic waves. To reduce computation time, a less complex shell model was also constructed. Transient excitation was applied to the supported nodes of both models, at the base of the shaft, with a time-function representing the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The models are developed at the end of an original phased construction-stage analysis of the shaft. Displacements, forces and moments are monitored and compared during the analyses steps. During the initial 15 seconds of the earthquake, the top and bottom of the shaft show similar displacements. The maximum horizontal displacement within the shaft is approximately 3.5 inches in the solid model and the shell model results conform to this by a factor of 50%. Keywords: Segmentally Lined Shaft, Soil Structure Interaction, Seismic Analysis, Finite Element Modeling, Ground Modification INTRODUCTION TO SEGMENTALLY LINED SHAFTS Large diameter segmentally lined shafts (SLS) are underground systems, constructed sequentially using precast concrete segments to form a ring which provides both temporary earth support during excavation and permanent structural support. The segments are connected via alignment pins, bolts, packer material and other structural components that ensure the continuity of the SLS. In this analysis, the construction process uses a top-down sequence wherein each soil layer is excavated, damp-proofing is installed and concrete segments are assembled to form each ring. This process is repeated until design depths are achieved completing the shaft. It is known that cylindrical structures sustain lateral (earth) pressure mainly through the mechanism of hoop-stress. As Timoshenko’s ring theory goes, a cylinder shell structure is prone to buckling under external pressure [1]. In typical designs of small diameter shafts and tunnel linings with small diameter to wall thickness ratios, nonlinear buckling analysis (i.e., nonlinear geometric analysis) is not considered, since the buckling capacities for those structures are much higher than typical pressures encountered at their design depths. However, in shafts with large diameter to wall thickness ratios, buckling could become a critical issue. In any given mode, as buckling occurs in a ring, some sections of the structure move inward while alternating sections protrude. Although the presence of the surrounding soil could mitigate the buckling by resisting the movement (Soil structure interaction) seismic loads can cause ground movements and lateral pressures, exceeding the capacity of the structure. It is therefore essential to design the load bearing capacities of the shaft to minimize the possibility of any catastrophic failure due to earthquakes. This study explores the structural response of the SLS when subjected to seismic loads."

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. I. INTRODUCTION During the course of our activities in assisting mining companies, we have had access to the monitoring results for personnel from a large number of uranium mines. The results differ greatly from one mine to another. One of our objectives has been to discover the origin of these differences. It is evident that they are largely due to variations in the geological context, to mining methods, and to the organization of the work ; but we also found that the rigor with which measures are implemented to prevent the personnel from being exposed to radiations is also a cause. In order to advise mining operators effectively, we have asked ourselves the following question Given the dosimetric results of a mining site, how can it be known - if occupational exposure has been reduced to the lowest possible level (dose optimization principle recommended by the ICRP) ; - if the exposures were justified, which would not necessarily be the case following a questionable choice of the mining method, for instance, or a lack of efficiency in the maintenance and repairs of ventilation apparatus or even an excess of radiation protection. It is necessary to establish some criteria, while taking into consideration the specific conditions for each mine, in order to determine whether a mining company is adequately implementing radiation protection procedures. This need led us to attempt a modelization of the occupational exposures of uranium miners ; the preliminary phase is presented here. Although voluntarily still very basic, this model makes it possible to demonstrate the role of certain dynamic or passive variables. Moreover, the model presents the concept of specific irradiation of a mining site equal to the collective dose received per ton of uranium metal supplied to the uranium mill. The specific irradiation can therefore be used to indicate the effectiveness of radiation protection procedures at a given mining site. This model can be used for - previsional exposure studies based on the use of data gathered at each site, making it possible to compare various work methods and to determine prevention means ; - qualification of "radiation protection" procedures at a mining site ; - detection of unjustified exposures ; - research of ways to reduce inevitable exposures. 2. DETRIMENT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH A GIVEN EXPOSURE DISTRIBUTION Respecting exposure limits ensures that delayed stochastic effects are the only health risks to workers. If the hypothesis of linearity in the dose-effect relationship is applied, the detriment to a group of workers is proportional to the sum of exposure for all the workers, or the collective exposure usually expressed as man x rem. On this point the linearity of effects hypothesis makes it possible to consider that two different standard deviation distributions having the same mean value are equivalent. It would be possible, then, to reduce the standard deviation by changing the distribution of workers at the various working places without changing the mean exposure value. In other words, without taking into consideration the practical implications, individual limits can be respected by rotating the personnel or by reducing the individual working period which would be compensated by increasing the number of workers. The collective dose would remain the same, which would justify the use of the concept of collective exposure. 3. "RADIATION PROTECTION" QUALITY INDEX AT VARIOUS MINING SITES Each mining site is responsible for its own collective dose, but it is also responsible for producing a certain amount of uranium metal in the ore sent to the uranium mill. These two quantities must be brought together in order to establish the "radiation protection" quality index of a mining site. This quality index, called-specific irradiation (Ir) is expressed in rem.ton -1 for external irradiation, in mJoule.ton-1 for inhaled [a]-energy, and in Ci.ton -1 for inhaled radon *. The specific irradiation represents the health hazard which must be associated to the extraction of one ton of uranium metal. Figures la and lb present a system of coordinates for which the axis of the abscisses is graduated in tons of U metal and the axis of the ordinates is graduated in units of collective exposures. In the EEC, the regulation is based on the measurement of the amounts of radon 222 inhaled.

Lateral density changes in the subsurface cause a change in the vertical pull of gravity at the surface. By very accurate measurement of gravity and the practical application of common sense, a microgravity survey can sometimes detect natural or man-made voids, bedrock profiles, and geologic structures of engineering interest. This paper will give some practical guidelines for the application of microgravity surveying. Emphasis in many papers (Blizkovsky, 1979, Fajklewicz, 1983) has been on the anomaly size: herein emphasis will be placed on detectability and signal-to-noise ratios. First, some easy to use curves for anomaly valuation are adapted from Arzi (1974). Secondly, the predictable noise sources are discussed. Thirdly, representative models of abandoned underground workings are evaluated for microgravity surveying given the probable noise in the survey results.

The DC Graphite Melter has been shown to be capable of processing radioactive waste materials. The process is characterized by its high temperature capability and operation in a closed system. From an environmental perspective, the control of emissions coupled with destruction for hazardous organic materials is mandatory. These same characteristics may be applicable to the minerals processing industry. Under normal operation, the system reaches temperatures for nominal operation of 1600°C, with an arc temperature in the order of 5000°C. The system temperature is determined by the melt temperature of the material being processed. In testing of a 750 lb/hour unit, temperatures of 2200°C were reached. Current focus is on finding waste treatment and metals recovery opportunities in the metals processing industry for his innovative technology.

Alternative material handling methods are allowing material handling operations to be performed with increased cost savings. This allows for higher production levels with better returns. RAHCO International Inc.'s Continuous Mining Excavator (CME) has recently received a lot of attention due in part to its operating efficiency, flexibility, and associated low operating costs. The CME is designed to perform three primary functions. These include material excavation, sizing and loading operations. In many applications, a drilling and blasting process can be eliminated. The CME was developed originally in 1985 for open pit coal mining. See figure I. Since this time, it has been proven an effective system for excavating many other types of materials including friable and sticky materials. It has also been shown to suitably handle hard rock in certain site conditions.

Of the variables affecting the electrical properties of coal measure rocks, water content is by far the most important, This paper describes specially developed apparatus and methods of measuring electrical conductivity and permittivity at constant humidity conditions. Electrical properties variations were measured for Applachian and Illinois, U.S.A. coal 2 basin samples in the frequency range 2 X 10 to 2 X 10 Hz. Coal measure rock electrical behavior, when correlated with mechanical behavior, is potentially useful in a number of mining applications.
