Bacterial leaching of copper and uranium is practiced in environments containing available sulfur and iron and having a strong acidic reaction. However, many mineral deposits do not have these conditions; the chalcocite and native copper ores in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are examples. Bacterial and fungal populations were observed in samples taken from the White Pine Copper Company tailing pond and mine, and isolates were prepared of the dominant species. The isolates were then screened for solubilization of copper from tailing, ore, and concentrate during incuba¬tion in a carbon and nitrogen supplying medium. Certain Penicillium fungi solubilized significant amounts of copper under neutral to slightly acidic conditions. Leaching apparently was accomplished by release into the medium of metabolites which chelated with the copper.- The process was found to be highly dependent upon the medium and the concentration of copper in the source material. The paper describes sampling and screening techniques, presents the results of experimentation to standardize procedures and maximize the yield of copper, and discusses the nature of the leaching process. This preliminary research reveals a biological process which may find use in mineral extractions but whether it can be applied economically remains to be determined.

INTRODUCTION In a very real sense, Butte, Montana is where the copper came from that won two world wars. The price for that unrestricted mining and smelting of copper came due in 1983 when Butte was declared a Superfund site. One of the most complex remnants of this mining history is the Parrot Tailings site. The Parrot Smelter operated from 1881 to 1910 moving Upper Silver Bow Creek to the south and depositing approximately 370,000 cubic yards of waste material adjacent to Upper Silver Bow Creek. Additional mixed waste from other processing sites deposited below the Parrot Tailings at the Northside Tailings, Diggings East and Blacktail Creek Berm total approximately 224,000 cubic yards of contaminated material. As part of the Superfund remedy, EPA proposed leaving all these wastes in place. This proposal prompted a detailed criticism by several geoscientists familiar with the site. The EPA’s 2006 Record of Decision (ROD) did in fact leave these wastes in place which set the stage for a series of studies which continue to refine how best to protect extensive completed Superfund Remediation downstream of Upper Silver Bow Creek. HISTORY OF THE PARROTT MINE AND TAILINGS Placer gold was discovered in Silver Bow Creek, the headwaters of the Clark Fork River only a few miles from the Continental Divide in 1864. This discovery lead to a stampede of placer and lode claims. One of the first lode claims located was the “Parrot” lode, located in the fall of 1864. Progress for developing a mine at the Parrott was slow and it wasn’t until 1876 that one of the original locators encountered a rich vein of chalcocite. Butte had its first copper mine! The Parrott mine was patented in 1879 and by 1881 the Parrot, having lost a “t”, concentrator and smelter were built. The smelter and concentrator were an immediate success with a considerable market for processing the District’s rich copper ore. In 1885 the employees of the Parrot Smelter bought the Butte Reduction Works, another smelter. In 1885 dams were built on Silver Bow Creek to contain various tailings and related processing byproducts (Figure 1).

Under specific geological environment, the full extraction of a coal seam is not possible either because of its extraordinary thickness or the presence of surface structures and bodies of water or because of the conditions prevailing in upper seams. Not uncommonly, therefore, for working such seams, pillars of coal are left for the permanent support of the overburden, and voids around the pillars are filled with sand to strengthen the pillars and prevent their deterioration with time. However, the paucity of river sand has focussed attention on the need for alternate strategies including trials with partial filling of the voids. This study has sought to examine in the laboratory the effects of partial and complete filling on the ultimate load bearing capacity and post-failure behaviour of small, tall pillars using artificial material.

A distribution-free approach is developed for estimating a bivariate distribution function for an ore deposit in terms of the experimental grade correlogram and experimental "weight functions" of the deposit. These weight functions are calculated as part of the approximation used in the mononodal cutoff concept. Use of this method obviates the need to transform to an isofactorial bivariate model. The method is illustrated for two examples, where the bivariate distributions are supposedly known : (a) the bivariate normal distribution and (b) the bivariate lognormal distribution. It is shown that the estimate of the underlying bivariate distribution is optimal when working at the mononodal cutoff, as can be anticipated theoretically. The approximation decreases in quality on either side of the mononodal cutoff, but still remains acceptable as a first estimate of the actual bivariate distribution.

Lack of understanding the major process parameters and inadequate scale-up factors have led to the belief that fundamental knowledge is not important for successful flotation plant operations. Flotation of simple and easy to process ores may not require a strong fundamental knowledge base for day to day operations. However, as low grade complex ores are mined and process control is integrated into flotation schemes, it is imperative for a plant operator to acquire a strong background in the basics of the flotation process at hand and/or have access to such a knowledge base at short notice. In order to meet the challenges of unexpected changes in the feed, reagent quality, water chemistry, physical, mechanical and hydrodynamic conditions, the flotation plant superintendent/chief metallurgist must have a strong background in the flotation fundamentals.

A technique that has been used for inspection and appraisal of rock tunnels is described. It enables a rapid and complete record to be made of those factors necessary for the engineering assessment of the rock conditions surrounding a tunnel. Full understanding of the regional geology, and a careful recording of data concerning the principal geological and construction factors is essential basic data for a tunneling project, whether the tunnel is under construction or is already in service. A methodical recording of data concerning general geology, shears, fracture orientations, spacing, persistence, rock classification, water condition, shear frequency, excavation method, blasting procedure, and rock stabilization and support methods, combined with a photographic record, can be completed by experienced engineers and geologists at the rate of over 1000 feet of tunnel per shift.

One of the primary functions of the Geotechnical Services-Materials section of the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is locating, sampling, and evaluating potential aggregate deposits throughout the State. This information is essential in designing, estimating, and bidding highway construction projects. The nature of materials used for aggregate varies greatly within Arizona. The northeastern or plateau section is famous for its scenic sedimentary formations that are, how- ever, too soft to make suitable aggregate. Volcanic materials are widely used in place of more conventional geologic units. In contrast, the southwestern, or Basin-and-Range section, contains a relative abundance of good aggregate, especially a diversity of gravels. The paper will review the off ice, field, and laboratory methods used by the ADOT Materials Section in satisfying its needs for aggregate information in Arizona.

Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System project final design began in 1973. The Section A of the planned Phase I is scheduled to go into revenue service in late 1982. The subway line structures include earth tunnels, rock tunnels and cut-and-cover structures. Final designs were performed by both the DMJM/KE staff and by outside subconsultants. This paper deals with Section A of the program. (Fig. 1.) The overall program cost for Section A is estimated to be $721 million. The cost for construction and owner furnished equipment is estimated to be $600 million, including contingency and escalation to time of construction. The remaining amounts are for right-of-way, design, construction management and agency (MTA) costs. The Section A line structures, including station lengths, are divided as shown in Table 1. [ ]

Fine coal particles are difficult to separate effectively from liquids or other solids. Ultrasonic energy may be used to enhance the efficiency of the conventional fine-particle separation processes widely used in the coal and mineral industries. Flotation, settling and dewatering tests were conducted using several fine coal samples to study the effects of ultrasonic treatment on these processes. Process variables such as particle size, ultrasonic treatment time and solids concentration were investigated for their impacts on ultrasonic treatment effectiveness. The results obtained from this study showed that ultrasonic treatment is an effective approach for enhancing solid/solid separation in flotation and solid/liquid separation in sedimentation and dewatering of fine coal. SEM microphotographs demonstrate that ultrasonics cleaned particle surfaces, which is, in part, responsible for the observed improvement in fine coal separation processes.

"The contract C931 of the downtown line 3 (DTL3) mass rapid transit system of Singapore includes half a kilometer twin tunnels running between Mattar and Macpherson stations. An EPB TBM of 6.6 m diameter was used to excavate both of these tunnels. The tunnels pass predominantly through a very stiff silty/clayey fine to coarse sand from the Old Alluvium Formation. In this paper, TBM selection procedure, TBM performance evaluation, and some of the tunneling operation challenges with the TBM in the Old Alluvium Formation are discussed. In this regard, soil conditioning trial tests were performed to resolve the clogging issue and low TBM performance. Thorough TBM operational data analysis was performed to detect high soil abrasivity, backfill grout leakage, and foam nozzle clogging. The results of some of the applied modifications are also discussed to show their effects on the TBM performance improvement. Finally, some of the challenging TBM design specifications are also discussed. INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground construction in Singapore has been increased in the last 30 years due to the demand for public transportation systems and the limited space above the ground for the infrastructure development. Downtown Line Stage 3 (DTL3) Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system has 21 km total route length and consists of 16 stations. DTL3 Contract C931 runs between Mattar station and MacPherson station. The construction works in this contract include twin bored tunnels of 6.6 m diameter and 450 m length and a TBM launch shaft of nearly 30 m depth. The tunnels run in urban area below Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway tunnel (KPE), Kallang River Canal, and Circuit Link. Figure 1 shows the alignment of the tunnels in between two subway stations. The tunnels were excavated by an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the Old Alluvium (OA) formation, a challenging geological formation in the sense of its abrasivity and stiffness. The Old Alluvium Formation mostly includes stiff to very stiff clayey and silty sand. The soil is un-weathered cemented to semi-cemented dense, mainly with a low permeability coefficient of 10-7 m/s and high SPT values (almost 100). The soil is classified as “very high abrasive” according to NTNU SAT test classification (SAT value of 15 to 42). The construction of the first tunnel drive was slowed down due to a number of factors related to soil conditioning and TBM operation. In this regard, a thorough analysis of the TBM operational parameters from the excavated sections was performed to identify the problems in time to prevent unwanted construction delays in the subsequent sections. In the following sections, a brief overview of the criteria used for TBM selection is presented at first. Then, the results from the analyses and tests performed to assess soil conditioning, grout leakage, and soil abrasion are presented. The last section discusses some of the tunneling design features that challenged the TBM operation in this project."

Luzenac is a town in the Pyrenees of Southern France -and the home of Talc de Luzenac, RTZ's first talc acquisition. The Luzenac Group is the largest talc producer in the world.

"The design of the tunnels at Bond Street Station includes a final sprayed concrete fireproofing layer. The performance of this layer was verified by a program of testing to Crossrail’s KT24 specification, which proved that a dosage of 1kg/m³ polypropylene fibers and a layer thickness of 50mm would be sufficient to limit spalling in the event of a fire. Application of this thin layer was achieved using a state of the art spraying robot, with the ability to scan the profile and automatically apply a uniform layer of concrete. To provide assurance and calibrate this spraying robot, BFK developed a bespoke survey system for checking SCL thicknesses in the field. This provided an instant independent check of the spraying robot and allowed areas of inadequate thickness to be rectified without risk of cold joints. This paper describes the practical application of the fireproofing layer and how design compliance was ensured. INTRODUCTION Fire is one of the most serious risks to a tunnel. The nature of tunnels — being long enclosed spaces — can increase the intensity of a fire, and make fire-fighting and rescue operations difficult. The damage that can be caused has been demonstrated by a number of historic tunnel fires, such as the Channel Tunnel fires of 1996 and 2008, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel fire in 1999. Without any intervention, the high temperatures in a fire create thermal stresses and a build-up of vapor pressure within the pores of concrete, which eventually exceed the tensile strength and trigger explosive spalling. Spalling exposes the core of the section to severe temperatures, leading to a loss of concrete and steel reinforcement strength or further spalling of successive layers. The concrete used in tunnel linings is particularly susceptible to explosive spalling, due to its low permeability achieved by the addition of microsilica (Bailey 2011). The sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels on Crossrail have been designed to resist the worst anticipated fire in operation, in order to prevent collapse and minimize damage to the structure. The design called for a system of passive fire protection, the efficacy of which was validated by the contractor through a testing regime. It was critical that the application on site reflected the test conditions, which demanded special control of the profile and thickness of the lining. In order to meet these constraints on tolerances and quality, BAM Ferrovial Kier joint venture (BFK) developed a reliable method of working with the Meyco Logica spraying robot, and a bespoke survey system for accurately checking thicknesses in the field. These innovations are the focus of this paper."

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unworked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 501 s saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in production of natural iron concentrate s. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 601 s as agglomerated products and foreign ores began to dominate the U. S. market.

The first Model 480 SALA-HGMS R carousel high gradient magnetic separator was recently manufactured (Figure 1). The carousel's design was based upon the high gradient magnetic separation technology developed and owned by Sala Magnetics Incorporated, Cambridge, Massachusetts. After a short (approximately 300 hours) in-house mechanical and electrical test and break-in period, the carousel was ready for a long term demonstration test. This paper describes the demonstration plant and operational performance of the Model 480 HGMS treating a low grade iron ore tailings. A location convenient to Sala International's main office in Sala, Sweden was desirable because Sala engineers and technicians were to operate the demonstration plant. The Strassa iron ore mine in central Sweden was chosen because it fit most of the criteria that was important for a good demonstration site. The Strassa mine is part of the state owned Svenskt Stal AB. The mine produces about 320,000 tons of iron concentrate per year consisting of 200,000 tons of magnitite concentrate and 120,000 tons of hematite concentrate.

The acid leach-solvent extraction processing of oxide copper ores can be improved when selected cation additives are utilized. Bench scale testing showed improvements in both sulfuric acid leaching and solvent extraction processing. Treatment with the method to be described shows improvement in copper recovery in the acid leaching section as well as reduced acid consumption and reduced iron and aluminum dissolution. Processing the copper bearing leach solution with LIX-64N shows increased loading of the LIX reagent which relates to reduced aqueous and organic flow rates, reduced organic loss and inventory as well as a reduction in the size of mixer-settlers. The use of selected monovalent cations controls fluctuations within the pro- cessing system to accomplish the above named improvements. Additionally, these cations are totally compatible throughout the processing system and are quite inexpensive. Bench scale recycle data will be presented both for the leaching section and the continuous solvent extraction processing section up to (but not including) processing the loaded electrolyte. Material balances as well as major solution component monitoring will also be presented.

Since 1955 Gaspe Mines has produced 144 million tonnes of ore, averaging 0.87% Cu, mined from two open pits and underground workings. In 1994, four exploration drill holes discovered a buried porphyry/skarn Cu-Mo deposit at depths of between 1000 m and 1700 m below the top of Porphyry Mountain. The mineralization and alteration associated with the Porphyry mountain quartz monzonite does not outcrop. A total of 19,500 m of drilling in 12 drill holes has outlined 200 million tonnes grading 0.73% Cu and 0.08% Mo. Mineralization occurs as veins and disseminations of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Drilling and feasibility studies continue.

INTRODUCTION The estimation of ore reserves is a process that begins with the earliest exploration stages on a property and continues throughout any subsequent evaluation and exploitation of the deposit. During exploration and preliminary evaluation, the results of these reserve estimates constitute the basic data for prefeasibility studies and economic analysis. The decision to continue exploration and development or to abandon a prospect is often based upon these studies. During the active life of a mine, reserve computations are continuously revised to assist in development planning, cost and efficiency analyses, quality control, and improvement of extraction and processing methods. Accurate reserve estimates are also required when financing a project, purchasing or selling a property, and for accounting purposes such as depletion and tax calculation. It is important to remember that the reliability of ore reserve estimates varies progressively through time as more and more information becomes available. The lowest order of reliability of estimation of reserves exists at the time of discovery. The maximum level of certainty concerning the ore reserves within a deposit is reached when the deposit is completely mined out. Between these two extremes are variable levels of certainty as to the tonnage and grade of the resource. This is particularly true of that portion of the mineral resource that constitutes the "minable reserve," as this portion is dependent upon economic as well as geological and technological factors. In the following discussion, several of the factors affecting ore reserve computation and some of the commonly used methods of calculation are presented. The first part of the discussion is confined to classical methods of hand calculation utilizing level maps and sections. The second part of the discussion presents an overview of somewhat more sophisticated methods of geostatistics which have been developed within recent Years. Geostatistical methods frequently provide the best ore re- serve estimates for many deposits. However, a digital computer is required for such geostatistically derived estimates due to the number and complexity of the cornputations involved. For many properties the classical nongeostatistical methods are adequate, particularly in the early exploration stages. In fact, it is the author's contention that even at those properties where the geostatistical approach is employed for reserve estimation, the geological and engineering staffs should prepare an estimate by traditional means. This provides an internal audit for the reserves and at the same time requires a continuing close appraisal of geologic problems that influence the presently known geostatistically estimated reserves and production at the mine.

6.1-SOIL MECHANICS WALTER C. SHERMAN, JR. 6.1.1-DEFINITION Soil mechanics is concerned with the behavior of soils in relation to the design, construction and performance of engineering works. In this context, soils include all uncemented materials, such as, gravels, sands, silts and clays, either naturally or artificially deposited, and, under certain conditions, weakly cemented, badly broken or weathered rocks. Many types of mine wastes have physical properties similar to those of soils and thus are amenable to analysis by the principles of soil mechanics. The principles of soil mechanics are used to solve such problems as the stability of various types of structures with respect to failure of the supporting soils, determination of soil pressures and deformations in the design of foundations and retaining structures, analyses of seepage and under seepage, and stability with respect to sliding of excavated and natural slopes and embankments. 6.1.2--SOIL PROPERTIES Soils are classified on the basis of index properties, such as, particle-size distribution and plasticity characteristics. The Unified Soil Classification System1 used to classify soils for engineering purposes is shown in Table 6-1. Other physical properties important from an engineering standpoint include natural water content, density, permeability, shear strength and compressibility. Physical properties are evaluated on the basis of carefully conducted laboratory tests. Procedures for laboratory testing are presented by Lambe. 2 Soils, either of natural or artificial deposition, are complex three-phase materials consisting of solids, water and gas (usually air or water vapor). One of the most important principles in soil mechanics is based on the concept of effective stress in the soil-water system. A stress, a, applied to a saturated soil is taken partly by the soil particles (effective stress, a'), and partly by the water in the voids (neutral stress or pore water pressure, u,) so that a' = a - u,. Only the effective stress affects the mobilization of frictional resistance between soil particles. In partially saturated soils, the pore-water pressure is negative due to capillary effects. The effective stress relation remains valid for small negative pore pressures, but anomolies arise if the soil is significantly unsaturated. In this case, the pore pressure is commonly assumed as equal to the pore air pressure, u,, so that [ u' = u - u..] 6.1.3--SOIL EXPLORATIONS Soil explorations are carried out by borings or test pits. Hvorslev3 has reviewed procedures and boring requirements, such as, type, depth and spacing employed. In general, soil strata are logged and representative exploratory samples are recovered for classification purposes and for determining the subsurface soil profile, which is constructed utilizing also knowledge of the geology of a site. The Sobek humidity cell has been in use with minor modification for more than 30 years to determine bulk primary-mineral reaction rates. As a result, it has become a key tool for predicting the bulk rate of sulphide oxidation, the Carbonate Mole Ratio (CMR) of neutralization-potential (NP) consumption to sulphide oxidation, and the rates of metal leaching. Most humidity cells are operated for less than a year, with the resulting rates extrapolated into the future for years or decades. The validity of these extrapolations was tested by examining longer trends from cells that have operated for three to seven years, as found in the International Kinetic Database (IKD). Additionally, large batches of cells for two minesites in the IKD (45 and 46 cells each) were examined to determine if regular, predictable trends were obtained across ranges of geochemistry at a minesite. The long-term cells show that the rates of sulphide oxidation and acid generation, based on sulphate production, have a 50% chance of stabilizing within one year, with the remainder fluctuating significantly throughout their test periods. Despite the fluctuations, the CMR, which is critical for defining site-specific or rock-unit-specific ABA criteria, remains relatively steady in many cases between 1.0 and 2.0 as expected from principles of aqueous geochemistry. However, if the sulphate-production rate falls below 10-30 mg/kg/wk, the CMR value can increase significantly. At and below these low rates, physical factors like flow rates of surface waters and groundwaters will determine the rate of NP consumption, rather than geochemical factors. Also, if weekly rinse pH falls to acidic values, the CMR will decrease below 1 .O, reflecting the exhaustion of fast- neutralizing minerals. The two batches of multiple cells also confirm these trends across arange of geochemistry. The long-term cells show that copper leaching often stabilizes within a narrow range as long as rinse pH remains relatively constant. Also, there is no strong dependence of leaching on the sulphate rate. However, the rate of copper production often increases sharply if rinse pH falls to acidic values. This suggests the measured copper-production rate in some cases is not a true primary rate, but a lower secondary rate after secondary- mineral precipitation within Sobek cells. As with the long-term cells, the batches of multiple cells show that copper production often increases gradually with decreasing rinse pH, with no clear dependence on sulphate production. However, high rates can also occur at near-neutral pH, so secondary-mineral precipitation of copper is not necessarily common.

Mineral models provide a systematic and comprehensive approach for analyzing and fore- casting the behavior of mineral markets and industries.' They also permit the analysis of a wide range of policy decisions. Obviously such models cannot capture all of the intricate relationships that shape the behavior of a mineral market. However, such models have become extremely useful and in many cases support the decision making approach of judgmental analysts. They tend to narrow the range of likely outcomes and thus reduce the risks and uncertainties of investing, trading, and speculating in minerals. Mineral models provide not only answers to "what-if" questions, they also inform analysts of the benefits and costs associated with mineral investment decisions. More recently they have been applied to specific mineral issues of the possible impact of buffer stock stabilization schemes and of import supply restrictions. Mineral Models Defined Because mineral models are so diverse, we must begin with a fairly broad definition. A mineral model is a formal representation of a mineral market, industry or system where the behavioral relationships included reflect the underlying economic and engineering factors as well as the political and social institutions. Of ten, but not always, a mineral model will consist of some combination of the following components: demand, supply, inventories and prices. Modeling of demand behavior normally begins with an interpretation of basic demand responses to prices and income (i.e., the associated price and income elasticities). Price elasticities vary among different minerals and among their diverse uses. They tend to be lower for minerals without close substitutes than for those where such substitutes exist. In addition, these elasticities vary with time as well as with the actual excess demand or excess supply. Variations like these, coupled with the relative instability of prices for a number of minerals, make explanations of demand behavior difficult. The degree to which demand responds to changes in income depends on the income elasticity of the end products to which the minerals serve as inputs. Those products with a relatively low income elasticity tend to experience proportionally smaller swings in sales than those with higher elasticities.
