Planning the primary development of a mineral deposit usually is done only once during the life of a mine. As a consequence, not optimizing the primary development of a mineral deposit can cause disadvantages over the whole life of a mine and can lead to higher costs. As a contribution to an improved primary development design procedure beyond the already existing work a study of the identification and quantification of the influence of parameters on primary development based on operational data from working mining operations has been completed. Based upon such a quantification of the influence of parameters a sequenced decision model was developed, that enables to develop an initial concept for the design of the accesses from the surface based upon a few critical parameters. Such a model will not replace detailed planning work within a feasibility study, but it is intended to reduce the amount of planning efforts at an early project stage through providing information what are most likely economic solutions, based on simple rules.

The guidelines were prepared based on the standards and regulations adopted by two prominent coal mining countries, the best practices developed by the mining industry, and the applicable standards used in the United States for the fail-safe operation of main fans.

Numerical simulations have been used to investigate roof fall in the past decades. Comparing to the continuum based methods, the discrete element method has been well recognized for its excellent performance in simulating large strain problems and fracturing processes in the rock mass. However, the discrete element method has its limitations. When simulating a large-scale problem, a large number of particles are required, which consumes significant computational resources. In the present study, a 3D numerical model coupled with the finite-difference method (FDM) and the discreteelement method (DEM) was created to simulate the laminated roof failure in an eastern coal mine in the US. In the FDM-DEM coupled model, the laminated roof of the entry is represented by an assembly of bonded particles using PFC3D. The laminated roof is simulated by adding parallel discontinuities. The discontinuities are given certain stiffness and strength in the model. The ribs, floor, and far-field surrounding rock are represented by continuum zones using FLAC3D. The strength of the discontinuities is varied sequentially and the fracturing of the laminated roof was analyzed with respect to entry advance. The results showed that the laminated roof fractures along the discontinuities while an intact roof fractures in a dome shape. Increasing the strength of discontinuity could enlarge the tensile zone inside the laminated roof and hence change the crack distribution. In addition, the crack quantity in the laminated roof behind the advancing face decreases with the increment of discontinuity strength while this trend is not occurring ahead of the advancing face. The simulation demonstrated that coupled method using PFC3D/FLAC3D can reproduce the laminated roof failure in underground coal mines.

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by more than 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures. In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy.

In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural-stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10 to 25.95 percent. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone’s physical-mechanical properties, such as uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity were determined to be more than 70 percent. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81 percent risk of hand-arm vibration. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural-stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

The original Radum aggregate plant, built by Henry Kaiser in 1931, is the oldest of the nearly 200 individual operations established by the Kaiser companies. Since that time it has been producing aggregate products primarily for the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, and for many years, this plant has been listed as the Nation's No. One aggregate producer. Early this year a new $10,000,000 facility went on line replacing the old plant. Construction of the facilities was performed under the direction of Kaiser Engineers construction management teams. The existing plant continued to operate without interruption during the entire construction period.

This paper reports on testwork exploring the dissolution/reprecipitation reaction: ZnS + 2HCl ? ZnCl2 + H2S, as part of a process for the production of pure ZnS. In spheroidal form, this would constitute a premium fonn of zinc refinery roaster feed enabling the production of pure ZnO. The research focused on the influence of proton activity on dissolution of zinc concentrates from Brunswick Mining & Smelting, Red Dog and Tara. The results and thermodynamic data suggest that the three concentrates contained significant amounts of the more reactive mineral wurtzite, although XRD analysis showed mainly the presence of the mineral sphalerite.

Upgrading of low-concentration ores is of growing importance today. The Heavy Medium Cyclone Process, thanks to strong centrifugal forces, effectively separates particles varying only slightly in specific gravity but widely in size. The paper discusses the separation efficiency, the method of assessing that efficiency, and the influence of such factors as medium solids. The operating results of nine heavy medium cyclone plants handling following minerals are reported: barite, wolfram, iron, magnesite, diamond, lead-zinc, fluorspar, rocksalt potash. Highlighted are an improved recovery system for heavy medium and some other developments, such as techniques for separation down to 0.1mm and the application in the field of recycling.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel project, a U.S. EPA/ DOJ CSO Long Term Control Plan Project. The system will provide at least 10.3 million gallons of storage in a 16.5-foot finished ID and 6,660-foot-long rock tunnel. The system will reduce both overflow volume and number of overflow structures on the Cuyahoga River. The project includes deep drop shafts and more than 3,000 linear feet of 48 to 96-inch I.D. sewers installed by trenchless construction methods. This paper will discuss the project background, ground conditions, and other challenges overcome during the design phases.

Preventing the spontaneous combustion of remnant coal, which is indicated by carbon monoxide (CO), is a significant issue for coal mining safety. The N00 longwall mining method with Z-type ventilation is advantageous for the prevention and control of CO; however, research regarding this topic is limited. To investigate the distribution of CO in a goaf and working face, a sealing material and technique for blocking the goaf were introduced after proposing a forming method for a Z-type ventilation system; furthermore, a monitoring method was designed and applied in the field. The results demonstrated that the CO concentration during mining in the upper corner and return airway ranged between 4–6 ppm and 3–7 ppm, respectively. More importantly, no CO was generated in the goaf. The results indicate that the advantages and mechanisms regarding the prevention of spontaneous ignition using the N00 longwall mining method with Z-type ventilation are as follows: (1) The adoption of the downward ventilation technique is not only beneficial for reducing the air pressure difference between both ends of the working face, but also prevents CO accumulation in the upper corner. (2) The basis of a spontaneous combustion disaster is eliminated owing to the absence of coal pillars reserved in the goaf. This study proposes a superior method for mitigating spontaneous combustion disasters related to remnant coal in the goaf in a coal mining field and contributes to the better understanding of the N00 longwall mining method for coal mining safety.

"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

The ore at this new underground operation is a massive sulfide breccia with high copper values. A major highway and electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface orebodv. The mining method being used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner together with a single boom, hydraulic jumbo is used for the mining. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation.

As part of a larger study to identify factors influencing the practical operating life of wire rope used on large draglines in surface coal mining, field trips to operating surface coal mines were made during late 1975. Wire rope performance information was obtained from personnel at thirteen mine sites west of the Appalachians. Seventeen pieces of equipment, utilizing buckets ranging from 30-to 220-cubic-yard capacity, were documented. We have judged that U.S. surface coal mining draglines, 30 yards and larger, can be represented as 120 machines having 60-cubic-yard buckets, moving 1.8 x 10 yards of overburden during 6,650 hours of productive availability per year. Based on our limited field study, we have calculated that downtime resulting from rope-related causes averages 105.6 hours per year for each (typical 60-yard) dragline. The total lost production from this source alone is thereby estimated at about 25 x 10 yards annually. Although study findings did not reveal anything about dragline rope life that wasn't known or practiced by one operator or another, most operators could expect improved rope life by periodic review of their practices and by adopting or adapting one or more life-improvement measures employed at other sites. Since rope productivity was found to vary by about five to one, among the sites studied, we believe considerably improved average performance is possible. As little as ten percent overall improvement would mean increased national productivity exceeding two million yards of solid overburden removal, and associated savings in rope costs alone of some two million dollars annually, not to mention any reduction of labor-related expenses. This report outlines preliminary findings which may prove useful to many operators in extending wire rope life, thereby lowering expenses and increasing surface coal mining productivity. Accurate prediction of truck productivity plays a pivotal role in improving the efficiency and profitability of openpit mining operations. This paper proposes a deep neural network (DNN) model to overcome the challenge of predicting truck productivity in openpit mines. The prediction model was built using eight variables and was optimized by considering different train-test split ratios, numbers of hidden layers and neurons, and activation functions. The proposed model’s performance was evaluated using various metrics and compared with other commonly used machine learning algorithms. The results showed that the proposed model outperformed traditional machine learning models by achieving higher prediction accuracy. Moreover, a single-variable sensitivity analysis showed that haul distance is the most influential variable for predicting truck productivity. This study marks a pioneering effort in employing DNN to predict truck productivity in openpit mining, signifying a notable advancement in the field.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued Program Information Bulletin P09-03 in April 2008, providing formal guidance on using programs that model the redistribution of stress during underground mining of coal. A key part of this guidance is visual observation and mapping of ground conditions. If a correlation between ground conditions and model output can be established, the model is considered to be verified, and can be used to guide mine design in similar ground. A simple scale is recommended for ranking observed roof, rib and floor conditions. This paper discusses optimization and implementation of a ground condition rating scheme in the gateroads of a deep underground longwall coal mine. Roughly 80% of each gateroad length deteriorated in a fairly uniform manner. However, this manner varied between gateroads, as did pillar size. The implementation of a ground condition mapping program, similar to that recommended in PIB P09-03, was successful in characterizing the ground response to mining in gateroads of a longwall coal mine.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key-technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This review paper describes the direct carbon fuel cell and its system, how it works, the developmental status, the characteristics of the carbon particles needed, and the research and development issues for the technology. INTRODUCTION The DCFC has been under development for many years. It was researched as early as 18961), but an intense research and development is necessary to realize its potential. William W Jacques, a US electrical engineer and chemist, described a DCFC in 1896 in US Patent 555511 for a “Method of converting potential energy of carbon into electrical energy”. Jacques used coke electrodes in a molten NaOH electrolyte. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide (SOFC) or hydroxide electrolyte (AFC) technologies can be used as the basis for the DCFC technology. A schematic of the direct carbon fuel cell in the MCFC mode is shown in Figure 1. The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650°C (1200°F). The high operating temperature is needed to achievesufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. When coal in an oil/water slurry is ground to minus-200-mesh in a ball mill, some of the mill energy, normally wasted as heat, can be usefully recovered to help emulsify the oil. If the discharge flows onto a suitable sized trommel screen, water and ash material are rejected through the screen while coal and oil ball together to give a clean coal product. A small (6-lb/hr) continuous plant has demonstrated the feasibility and the limitations of this process for New Mexico coals.

The aim of this study is to present hazard classifications of location, type and causes of accidents in the Turkish coal-extracting industry using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In this study, fatal mine accidents were analyzed by pairwise comparison and weighting, and the most important hazards were identified by determining the effective main and sub-criteria among location, type and causes of accidents. For this purpose, first-, second- and third-level hazards consisting of location, type and causes of accident were determined by using the data of fatal mine accidents in underground and openpit coal mining in Turkey between 2010 and 2020.

For the mining industry in general and gold mining in particular the past few years have been difficult. Economic conditions coupled with growing regulatory restrictions have led to increasingly important reasons for managing assets wisely. From a public company perspective this makes sense because it ultimately provides for an increase in shareholder wealth and that's what we're in business to do. Regardless of whether a company is public or not, assets must be managed effectively to remain a player in today's competitive environment. So, as the CEO of a gold mining company, how do we manage our assets to ensure that we are satisfying our obligations to our customer --the Amax: Gold shareholder? Let me tell you. As I said earlier, the gold industry has been under siege. We have just completed our third year of average prices below $400 per ounce. When you add finding and/ or acquisition costs and development costs to operating costs, there isn't much of a profit margin left. What this environment provides, however, is opportunities for growth. In the gold business, you either grow or you die. Today, most North American gold producers have at most a 10 year mine life. We are all scrambling to add reserves so we don't become extinct. As prices remain low, opportunities for increasing diminishing reserves abound. This is the time for the opportunistic company to take advantages of market conditions and that's precisely what we, at Amax: Gold, have done!
