“Plutonic-related” gold deposits in Interior and SW Alaska (Tintina Gold Belt) vary significantly in size, grade, vein/deposit morphology, depth of emplacement, distance from causative pluton and metal association. Metal associations such as Au-Bi and Au-As-(Sb-Hg) are a good empirical indicator of depth of emplacement and distance from causative pluton and have been used successfully in exploration. Results from a variety of analytical techniques also suggest a phenomenological cause for these metal associations, e.g. gold and bismuth have linked metallogenesis at high temperatures and thus are best correlated at deposits that are deep and/or close to causative intrusions.

Partners In Economic Reform, Inc., established a Polish-American Mine Center in Katowice, Poland, in 1996 to improve working conditions in the minerals industry. The program was based on the experience of mining companies, government, and labor in the United States, and was executed by a Coordinating Committee headed by the Center Director and Polish leaders from industry, State, labor, and academia. The cooperation among all parties has enabled safety and health issues to become part of industry restructuring with impressive initial reductions in coal mine fatalities. Existing work practices and attitudes of labor and management were assessed in coal mines throughout the country. Promotion, Rules, and Job and Task Analysis were identified as the areas requiring the most improvement, and are part of a post-graduate Safety Management program. Demonstration projects included measuring dust levels, using safety glasses, and promoting hazard awareness. Improved labor-management relations increased cooperation allowing for effective transfer of technology. Results can also be applied to improve the working environment of the manufacturing sector also undergoing restructuring.

From 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig.1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig. 2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91%, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from1990 to 1996. This number is not large in magnitude. But a workforce of fewer than 2,000 miners makes for a high fatal-accident rate. The severity of the typical fall-of-ground injury is, in general, very high. About three-fifths of all roof, face and rib fall injuries were designated by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as some kind of lost time accident. MSHA assigns each accident a severity value from one to six. A one represents a fatality, a two, a permanent disability and three, a lost time accident (Fig. 3).

Several economic factors have caused the surface mining industry to require large-capacity shovels and trucks for efficient, high-production, low-cost operations. Some of those factors include technological advancements in equipment, commodity market depressions, increased labor and maintenance costs, contractural obligations and harsh operating conditions. The difficult operating conditions in surface mines, however, pose challenges to the use of high-capacity equipment. They include space limitations, weak over-burden, and weathered soils and rocks. So mining companies face major challenges in selecting appropriate shovels to meet the technical, operating, safety, environmental and economic requirements of their mines.

One would be hard pressed to find another project as complex as this one given its configuration, the variety of issues to address and the required construction techniques. Contract C710 is currently under construction as part of Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail, connecting downtown Seattle with Sea-Tac Airport. The paper describes the construction-to-date of the deep mined station under Beacon Hill using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This deep “binocular” station is being mined through some of the most challenging soft ground conditions in the USA. The excavated volume of the station is approximately 60,000 cy (46,000 m3) and the station comprises a variety of geometries and cross sections ranging from 235 sf (22 m2) up to 1,670 sf (155 m2). This underground complex includes platform, concourse, cross-passage and emergency ventilation tunnels together with station egress and ventilation shafts. Various excavation sequences are in use for the different tunnels including the twin-sidewall drifts for the impressive45 ft (13.7 m) wide by 42 ft ( 12.8 m) high concourse cross adits. This station has two train platforms approximately 165 feet (50m) below the surface. This station, constructed in highly variable glacial deposits including water bearing sands and silts approximately 50 ft below multiple perched water tables in an urban setting, creates a very unique and challenging situation. Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, majority owned by Phelps Dodge produces 200M lbs per year of LME Grade A copper from low cost leaching of secondary sulfides and SXEW processing. Central to the success of Cerro Verde has been the continuous improvement of leaching practices which currently yield over 80% recovery of the contained copper in the ore. This recovery has been achieved by careful attention to operational practices and leaching process fundamentals. This paper details the development of the concept of “Lixiviant Request Rate” where by solution is applied at an optimal rate for the grade, mineralogy, and the point in the leach cycle. Also paramount to the success of Request Rate technology has been the development of irrigation practices such as drip irrigation and irrigation grid design. These developments have ultimately resulted in improved copper production, decreased sulfuric acid and water consumption, decreased pumping cost, and more consistent PLS grades.

Ultra fine grinding is becoming increasingly used in the mining industry over recent years. The development of large-scale units for high volume grinding of low value materials and concentrates has opened up new areas of economical metal extraction. The ability of stirred vertical mills to produce very fine particles with high surface areas, is providing mine operators with novel extraction possibilities within gold concentrate regrind for Biox or leach feed, Activox autoclave feed preparation and lime slaking operations. The paper will review design, operational and maintenance aspects of ANI-Metprotech stirred vertical mills, comparing these to tower mills, horizontal bead mills and attrition mills.

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of green house gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. Extended to the Canadian mining industry, such results would represent a GHG emission reduction of about 0.05 Mt/y. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e., energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory-testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e., use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

An Automated People Mover (APM) transit system is planned for the growing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The APM will improve passenger movements between the terminals, and provide a link to parking facilities, a new rental car facility, and the planned metro Light Rail. The underground works will include shallow twin bored tunnels, taxiway crossings, and underground stations constructed beneath critical airport facilities. Challenging soft ground conditions will require extensive underpinning and ground improvements. Design is underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with project completion in 2015. The owner’s planned delivery method for the APM Project will be Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) with a Guaranteed Maximum Price.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. Gangue-cemented paste backfill (GCPB), is a well-established green mining technology and significantly improves the recovery rate of mineral resources, prevents mine dynamic disasters, reduces surface subsidence, and consumes a considerable amount of solid waste. The addition of an early strength agent as an additive in cement-based materials provides several security, technical, and economic advantages. In this study, the early strength agent on the early age (3, 7 and 28 days) strength of GCPB is evaluated experimentally. The GCPB specimens have an initial sodium sulfate early strength agent concentration of 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4%, and the obtained samples were analyzed by testing for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The test results show that the UCS of the GCPB specimens with sodium sulfate is much higher than that of the blank specimens. When cured for 3 days and 7 days, the strength of GCPB with 2% sodium sulfate increased the most, by 131% and 116% respectively. When cured for 28 days, the strength of GCPB with 1% sodium sulfate increased by 135%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the GCPB with 1% and 2% sodium sulfate had better internal structure compactness, thicker acicular crystals, and more flocs. As a kind of early strength agent, sodium sulfate can react with calcium hydroxide to generate calcium dihydrate sulfate and then react with calcium aluminate; the hydration product (C3A) quickly generates calcium sulfoaluminate hydrate (AFt) needle-shaped crystals, forming an early skeleton and improving the early strength.

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and ground falls, pose critical risks to underground mine safety and productivity. Today, monitoring of such failures is primarily conducted using legacy techniques with low spatial and temporal resolution while exposing workers to hazardous environments. This study assesses the potential of novel simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)-based light detection and ranging (Lidar) data quality for rapid, digital, and eventually autonomous mine-wide underground geotechnical monitoring. We derive a comprehensive suite of quality metrics based on tests in two underground mines for two state-of-the-art mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems. Our results provide evidence that SLAM-based MLS provides data of the quality required to detect geotechnically relevant changes while being significantly more efficient for large mine layouts when compared to traditional static systems. Additionally, we show that SLAM-specific processing can achieve an order of magnitude better relative accuracy relevant for change detection than quality metrics derived from traditionally deployed tests would suggest while reducing SLAM drift error by up to 90%. In collaboration with an operating block cave mine, we confirm these capabilities in field tests on a mine-wide scale and, for the first time, demonstrate methods of rockfall detection using MLS data. While more work is required to investigate optimal collection, processing, and utilization of MLS data, we demonstrate its potential to become an effective and widely applicable data source for rapid, accurate, and comprehensive geotechnical inspections.

Rich Hill, also known as Weaver District No. 2, is among the most productive placer gold locations in Arizona. Located near Congress, AZ (Fig. 1), this district hosted major placer rushes in the 1860s and1930s. Those rushes were followed by an electronic metal detecting rush that started in the 1980s and continues today. Thousands of ounces of gold have been produced by these modern amateur and professional metal detectorists. Many of them see more gold in an afternoon than Nevada mine workers will ever see outside of the mill. Rich Hill discovery Inspired northeastward by Spanish legends, a party of 10 men left Yuma, AZ on April 1, 1863. Included in the group were Pauline Weaver (Fig. 2), Henry Wickenburg and Abraham Peeples. Wickenburg left the group near the Hassayampa River and discovered the Vulture deposit. The rest of the group arrived at the base of Rich Hill in late May. While drying antelope meat on the first day, a few of the men prospected a nearby creek bed and immediately found gold. In a couple of hours they picked up more than 2.8 kg (90 oz) of gold. The next day, four members of the party went searching for their horses and returned with news that a nearby hilltop was literally graveled with nuggets.

Hydrologic assessments of existing and proposed waste rock stockpiles (WRS) are typically required for application of operating and closure permits at mine sites. The results of these assessments can be used to determine the applicability of the state groundwater permit program requirements to the operation and closure of these stockpiles. The objective of this hydrologic assessment was to ascertain whether or not the WRS at the Ajo Mine have a reasonable probability of discharging potential pollutants to the underlying aquifer under the operational mine conditions. The hydrologic assessment was performed based on an evaluation of climatic data, prediction of the net infiltration rate through the WRS and prediction of additional hydrologic factors such as the time required to deplete available moisture storage in WRS. The predicted net infiltration rates ranging from 0.13 inches/year (1.1x10-8 cm/s) to 0.24 inches/year (1.9x10-8 cm/s) are below the threshold value of less than 10-7 cm/s recommended by Hutchison and Ellison (1992) as being characteristic of conditions that produce no or negligible quantities of seepage. In addition, the total time required to deplete available moisture storage within the Ajo Mine WRS and for any potential seepage from the WRS to reach the underlying aquifer is estimated to range from 260 years to 1,950 years. Collectively, the climatological and geotechnical investigations and the hydrologic predictions demonstrate that the WRS at the Ajo Mine hydrologically do not have a reasonable probability of discharging pollutants to the underlying aquifer. As a result of this prediction, the stockpile will not be regulated under the state groundwater permit program and operational and reclamation requirements will be limited to managing surface water runoff.

Introduction Argyle is located in the Kimberley region in northwest Australia (Fig. 1). It is a significant diamond discovery by world standards and is the first major diamond find in Australia. The deposit consists of a pipe and associated alluvial deposits. Before the 1970s, diamonds were known to exist only sporadically in Australia. They have been found occasionally in association with gold deposits in Western Australia. There is a small deposit near Copeton in New South Wales. Some alluvial occurrences have also been found in Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. The first indicator minerals in the Kimberley region of Western Australia were discovered in January 1973. Production from the alluvial deposits at Argyle began in 1983. A $430-million construction program to develop a mine and treatment plant capable of producing 25 million carats per year was completed in December (1 carat = 0.2 grams). Ownership and management Participants in the project are known as the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture. The group consists of CRA Ltd., 56.8%; Ashton Mining Ltd., 38.2%; and the Western Australian Diamond Trust (formerly Northern Mining Corp.), 5%. The project is managed by Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CRA. Marketing is undertaken separately by the Western Australian Diamond Trust and by Argyle Diamond Sales Ltd. (for CRA and Ashton Mining groups). History Ownership of the Exploration Joint Venture has changed over the last 12 years as various parties changed their shareholdings. The original Kalumburu Joint Venture was formed in 1972 with five participants, each holding a 20% interest. By 1983, a number of ownership changes had occurred. The end result is that two original participants have sold out. CRA now holds a 56.8% share and the Ashton Mining Group holds 38.2%. CRA also assumed project management in January 1977. Table 1 demonstrates the long lead times involved in developing a project.

When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

Geotechnical conditions exposed by the phased exploration programs have had a major impact on the selection of excavation and support methods, dewatering requirements, size of openings, vertical alignment, and estimated cost of construction for the Beacon Hill Tunnel and Station section of the “Link” Light Rail. Beacon Hill is comprised of a very complex glacial geology, including numerous slickensided fractures, injected sand dikes, and multiple perched groundwater levels as revealed by a phased boring program and exposed in a test shaft. The Geotechnical Baseline Report (GBR) presents this complex geology along with a “tool box” of alternative additional support systems to accommodate the varying ground conditions during construction of the station excavation. Additional explorations will also be accomplished during construction to further refine the geotechnical interpretations and provide an opportunity to use pro-active ground improvement techniques to optimize the station excavation and support requirements.

The Montana Tunnels Mine was mined out to a depth of 900 feet at the end of 1999. The first signs of instability were recognized in 1996 along the upper slope area of the northwest sector when the pit was mined out to a depth of approximately 500 feet. To extend the life of mining operations, it has been proposed to extend and steepen the northwest highwall to a depth of 1000 feet. Slope stability analyses were carried out using the UDEC software program to assess the stability and deformation of the proposed highwall design. Back analysis of an instability in 1997 along the upper slope section and highwall deformation to date has indicated reasonable agreement with the observed mode of failure and displacement monitoring results. The results of detailed analyses of the proposed highwall design have indicated very limited additional deformation, further development of tension cracks is unlikely and large-scale instability is not expected to occur. A total of 40% of additional mining has been completed and ongoing displacement monitoring to date has confirmed very limited additional movement and no further tension crack development.

Editor's note: information for this feature was taken from the published APCOM proceedings. Computer trends, with special focus on the reasons for computer use, grabbed the lion's share of attention at the 23rd worldwide meeting on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry (APCOM 23). However, technical topics did not provide the meeting's sole focus. The last-minute inability of certain former communist countries to fund the travels of a few scheduled speakers was a reminder that science does not operate in a void. As with all technical progress, the APCOM presentations raised interesting questions regarding interrelated organizational dynamics and political and socioeconomic issues. Consider US Bureau of Mines (USBM) research to design an expert control systems to "duplicate" an experienced, "good" operator during automated underground roof bolting. In his presentation of the project, Takach, Jr. stressed the importance of preserving the ability to switch from automatic to manual drilling control. From a technical standpoint, this allows the expert system to "learn" from a good operator. As important, he said, is that this flexibility decreases the human operator's sense of being replaced by the machine. The question arises: Which will loom larger in union minds, increased operator safety through remote opera¬tion or the potential for total operator replacement? Like any new product, computer technology relies on marketing to aid its acceptance and use. Consider, too, a decision support system, by Schena and Gochin, for mineral resource management in a developing country.
