With the content of gold and platinum in the vast majority of ore deposits typically averaging 6 parts per million and less, the accurate and precise measurement of these metals in samples of ore and mining process streams has proven very difficult to achieve by modem spectroscopic analytical techniques. Largely because no other technique has proven suitable, the basic fire assay process has become the accepted international standard for these metals. Fire assay, however, suffers a number of disadvan­tages in the modem, competitive, high technology, and increas­ingly environmentally aware world. It is a labour intensive technique that is difficult to automate, and requires high levels of skill to ensure accuracy and consistency of results. Potentially hazardous chemical reagents are employed, of which, lead, in particular, can be a serious source of contamination to both personnel and the environment if not effectively controlled. Other dangerous elements, such as mercury and arsenic, liberated in high energy furnace operations, are further sources of possible health and pollution hazards. n contrast, the energy dispersive K X-ray fluorescence (K­XRF) technique devised by K X Technology Ltd overcomes many of the technical constraints of conventional low energy X­ray analysis, and has the potential to revolutionise assay opera­tions in precious metal mining. The technology is simply automated, requires basic operator skills, uses no chemicals, consumes less than 20kW, and is capable of detecting gold and platinum to an accuracy of O .1 parts per million by mass. The new third generation design of AZTEC laboratory instrument, released in 1994, is the result of significant technical development. Capable of analysing over 1200 samples per day, and developed primarily for grade control sampling, its applica­tions have spread to gold ore accounting from on-line conveyor belt sampling; screening of exploration samples; measurement of gold in carbon granules for Carbon-in-Pulp process control; and for conducting rapid checks to support key managemen decisions. The economic, rapid, and non destructive analysis ofup to 80g of ore for large numbers of samples, reduces sampling and sub-sampling errors, and provides improved grade estimates for ore bodies. When interfaced to a LIMS, laboratory automation and cost-savings can be further enhanced. The AZTEC design is also being modified for the analysis of platinum. The GOLDSTREAM on-line analysis system is an important new application of K-XRF to the continuous monitoring of process streams in gold ( or platinum) plants and mills. Integrat­ing the technologies of K-XRF to measure total gold, and dissolved gold spectroscopy to measure gold in solution, the insoluble fraction of gold can be deduced, and the effectiveness of the extraction process determined. Slurries are sampled automatically from selected points of the plant and pumped to the system for analysis. The information produced forms the basis for plant control and optimisation.

Controlled release systems delivering the required concentration of an effective bactericide over an extended time period have been developed by The BFGoodrich Company's ProMac® Systems group. The ProMac system is site-specific and includes a four-step approach to controlling acid mine drainage (AMD): (1) Diagnosing the problem, (2) Prescribing the treatment, (3) Supervising the application of controlled release bactericides, and (4) Honitoring the success of applied treatment. The success of the ProMac system is evidenced by improved water quality, healthy vegetation, a reduction in levels of acidophilic thiobacillus, and a corresponding increase in population of beneficial microorganisms.

Metal ions, such as chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) are found as trace impurities in mineral dust. Since metal ion mediated free radical generation has been implicated in many disease processes, we carried out a detailed investigation of the metabolism of these metal ions by biological redox systems and the possible oxygenated radical generation therefrom. We found that highly reactive Cr(5+) species are generated in the reduction of Cr(6+) by NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase. The reduced metal ion species react with hydrogen peroxide, to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in a continuous cycle. The enzymatic catalysis processes also involves the reduction of molecular oxygen to the superoxide [(0-1 2)] radical. Thus only a trace amount of metal ions chemisorbed on mineral dusts, such as quartz, can catalyze the generation of the highly toxic oxygenated radical species from cellular hydrogen peroxide, suggesting a new biochemical mechanism for mineral dust induced chronic lung injury.

High CO2 fluxes associated with reclaimed coal mine spoils pose an environmental hazard where such sites are used for building. CO2 concentrations in excess of 25% have been reported in homes constructed on or down gradient of such spoils. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a mitigation trench used at one mine site on CO2 fluxes across the trench using chamber?based trace gas measurement. LI8100 automated CO2 flux system was used to measure CO2 fluxes from 32 sample points located across a deep mitigation trench on June 8 and 9. The maximum recorded fluxes were 7.29 and 8.18 µmol/m2/s, with averages of 4.15 and 5.50 µmol/m2/s, up and down-dip respectively. These preliminary results show CO2 flux is higher up-hill than down-hill at 95% significant level. This work shows that flux measurement can be used to investigate CO2 migration on reclaimed mine land. Further work is necessary to allow geostatistical modeling of the spatial variability of CO2 fluxes over reclaimed coal mine spoils. Knowledge gained would assist mining practitioners and regulators in reclamation planning for envisaged post-mining land uses.

A significant portion of the, coal mined by U. S. Steel is beneficiated to upgrade the quality of the resultant coke to meet blast-furnace requirements. Primarily because of degradation from modern mechanized mining methods, a considerable quantity of the coal to be beneficiated is in the 1/4-inch by 100-mesh size range. In the cleaning plants, this coal is usually cleaned on concentrating tables and then mechanically dewatered in solid-bowl centrifuges to 9 to 14 percent water. At some plants, to further decrease the amount of water shipped with coal, and to improve the coking characteristics of the coal at its destination, mechanical dewatering is followed by thermal drying. At U. S. Steel's-Alpheus preparation plant at Gary, West Virginia, approximately 50 percent of the total coal produced is in this fine size range, and two fluidized-bed dryers are used for the thermal drying step. The two fluidized-bed dryers are 14 feet in diameter and were designed by the Dorr-Oliver Company. Although the original design called for a rate of drying equivalent to 37 tons, of moisture per hour, presently they are removing twice that amount. This paper describes, the major problems encountered' in operating these dryers at the present, high capacities and how they were overcome.

The subject area known as upper Dry Valley is located 15 miles due east of Soda Springs in Sections 14 and 23, Township 9 South, Range 44 East, Caribou County, Idaho. The railroad extending from Soda Springs to its terminus at El Paso's Maybe Canyon mine is 8z miles to the north in lower Dry Valley. Initial data derived from trench work in 1962 revealed a variety of econom¬ically significant alterations of the phosphatic beds related to the rather unique geomorphic development in the northern part of phosphate lease 1-012989. It was apparent that such conditions, while valid for near-surface beds in a strike direction, would be misleading if projected to the proposed depth limits of strip mining. Consequently, a subsurface mapping program was initiated in 1963 to determine: (1) the depth and horizontal extent of weathering and related phe¬nomena, (2) the depth, thickness, and quality of ore beds and intervening strata, and (3) structural geology as a guide for mining procedures. Successful use of a scintillometer in 1956 to detect the subcrop position of phosphate beds in the Smokey Canyon area of southeastern Idaho led to the conclusion that gamma radiation surveys of drill holes could be a useful aid in subsurface mapping. The objectives of this paper are: (1) briefly to describe geologic features characteristic of the phosphate lease area and (2) to demonstrate the practical application and theory behind gamma radiation logging as an effective tool in the economic evaluation of a phosphate lease.

A current program of research on the explosibility of coal dust/methane mixtures is described. During the study an explosion test chamber based on a novel design has been developed. This 20 litre open chamber uses a rotating drum concept for dust dispersion and infra-red sensors for dust concentration measurement. The chamber design allows different initiators to be tested while varying methane gas and coal dust concentrations. A new approach to the determination of coal dust concentration is included with a description of a dielectric dust probe. The measurement technique is based on the change in dielectric constant as the proportion of coal dust in air between probe capacitor plates increases or decreases. Characterization of coal dust samples is of vital importance. The particle size distribution, coal proximate analysis and elemental analysis were studied. Coal dust was sourced from airborne collected samples, settled dust from mine sources and seam channel samples crushed and sized. Explosibility test results indicate that a very low concentration of coal dust can form an explosible mixture when dispersed in methane concentration of just below five percent. With low temperature initiators, the coal dust lean limit concentration rises rapidly as the methane concentration is reduced. An accurate knowledge of the potential explosion hazards of coal dust and coal dust/methane mixture is necessary to establish safe operating conditions in underground mines. The research results outlined extend knowledge in this area.

Computer simulation models of working mines can be a great benefit to mining engineers. Such models have been used in mine planning (how many trucks-shovels to have, when to add new equipment, etc.) and mine design (should a dispatch system be purchased, where is the optimum location, for mine equipment, etc.). A simulation model can be thought of as a dynamic representation of the mine. It can be easily changed to reflect a variety of situations. A major problem for the engineer is how to present the results of the simulation study. This has now been overcome by means of animation to present the results of the simulation. The main simulation languages in use for discrete system simulation are SLAM, SIMAN and GPSS/H. Each has animation with SLAMSYSTEM for SLAM, CINEMA for SIMAN and PROOF for GPSS/H. Animation with SLAM and CINEMA have been on the market for several years whereas PROOF is a relative newcomer and has features not found in other animation software. This discussion will be confined to PROOF. Some of the comments will apply to all simulation and animation software.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT While Holmes & Narver is better known in other fields, the company has been active in many phases of underground excavation for over twenty years. In the 1950's, H&N participated in design and construction of nearly twenty miles of waste disposal tunnels in Southern California. As Architect-Engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission, we had design and management responsibility for many miles of tunnels and for thousands of feet of exploration and big hole drilling, from coast to coast in the States, and for gas well completions and exploration drilling for the Navy and the National Science Foundation from Pt. Barrow to Byrd Station in Antarctica. In my ten years with the company, we contributed to the development of big hole drilling techniques at a number of sites and analyzed the capability of boring machines for many of the tunnel projects. Introduction A well-designed mining plan is one that minimizes cost and mining induced problems and maximizes recovery of the coal reserve. To minimize the negative effects on surface structures caused by ground subsidence due to underground mining activities, two kinds of practices are commonly employed by mine operators. One is the support technique, which leaves an area of coal unmined or partially mined beneath the structure to be supported. The other is the protection technique, which protects the structure when it is subsiding with the ground by taking advantage of the ground subsidence process (Luo et al., 1992). In designing the supporting technique, the only currently available method in the US is the one stated in the Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985). However, the size of the support area designed by this method will be excessively large and result in a wasteful use of coal reserves when the overburden depth is more than 350 ft. A more scientific method is proposed in this paper for designing the support area. This method is based on a large amount of subsidence data collected throughout a number of major US coal fields and the authors' experience with monitoring and protecting surface structures that have been undermined by longwall panels. It considers the critical deformation indices that a structure can tolerate, and depth and height of underground extraction. A support area designed by this new method will not only assure the safety of the structure to be supported but will also maximize the extraction of the coal reserve. Design of support area using the Pennsylvania rules The Pennsylvania Underground Coal Mining Rules (1985) state that no underground mining activity should be permitted beneath structures where the overburden depth is less than 100 ft. An exception to these rules is provided for mine related openings that provide access to the surface for such as entries, shafts, boreholes and site-specific variances for entry development. If the overburden depth is greater than 100 ft, the mine operators should utilize either of the following: •Extraction techniques that provide for planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner, or •Support techniques designed to prevent subsidence damages to features identified as: •Public buildings and non-commercial structures [ ] customarily used by the public, including churches, schools and hospitals • Dwellings, cemeteries, municipal public service operations and municipal utilities in place on April 27,1966 •Impoundments and other water bodies with a storage capacity of 20 acre-ft or more • Aquifers, perennial streams and water bodies that serve as a significant source for a public water supply system, and •Coal refuse disposal areas. The support techniques require that a support area be left beneath the surface structure or feature to be protected (Fig.1). The support area should consist of coal pillars, with their size and pattern being such that their bearing strength is maximized. The total coal extraction within the support area should be limited to a maximum of 50%. The support area should be rectangular in shape and determined by projecting a line at a 15° angle from the surface to the coal seam with an offset distance of 15 ft from all sides of the structure. "INTRODUCTION Crossrail is a subsidiary company of Transport for London created for the construction of a new transverse train line 118 km long between Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East, including 21 km underground below London. Crossrail C305 Eastern Running Tunnels project is the biggest contract within Crossrail Project and involved boring 11.8 km of twin tunnels through London’s city center. Crossrail C305 Project interfaced with different contracts along its alignment and therefore logistics and solutions had to be developed to minimize disruptions or interferences with other contractors and the neighborhood. The paper describes this innovative approach. C305 CONTRACT APPROACH C305 contract was split into three drives, to be excavated by four EPB TBMs 7.1m diameter, as shown in Figure 1. •,Drive Y: 8.2km long between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon Station in the city center •,Drive Z: 2.7km long between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Junction •,Drive G: 0.9km long between Limmo Peninsula and Victoria Dock Portal in the East. Crossrail C305 Project scope of works included the excavation of TBM tunnels and shafts at Limmo Peninsula and Stepney Green (including 17m span turnout caverns), along with the requirement to traverse station and shaft structures of other Crossrail contracts. Limmo Peninsula Site was a strategic element as it was the only access point on the tunnel alignment with sufficient available area at the surface for tunnelling logistics and also connected to the Lea River, tributary of the River Thames which facilitated marine operations for segment supply and muck removal. These were the reasons for operating Drive Y & Drive G TBMs from that location. Drive Z TBMs were originally planned to be launched from Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane, supplying the TBMs during Drive Z excavation from Limmo Peninsula site through the excavated section of Drive Y between Limmo and Stepney Green. During the early stages of the project, a value engineering proposal with a new tunneling strategy was agreed wherein the Pudding Mill Lane contractor would provide space for TBM assembly and operation in their portal, allowing for reversing Drive Z excavation and launching the two TBMs from Pudding Mill Lane. This optimization reduced some of the shaft requirements at Stepney Green which were contingent upon critical enabling works and provided program certainty and cost savings for the full Crossrail Project. It allowed for the reuse of both the Drive Z TBMs for Drive G excavation from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal thereby saving on the procurement of two TBMs, in addition to easier logistics for both Drives Y&Z, therefore de-risking the TBM excavation process and the C305 Project program completion."

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. Refuge alternatives typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires that the PRVs vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: a modified PVC check valve, an off-the-shelf brass/cast iron butterfly check valve, and a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel pre-fabricated RA and has been adapted for use in built-in-place (BIP) RAs located at one mine. PRVs used in tent style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with 30 CFR regulations. BACKGROUND The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (Miner Act) (1) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the Department of Labor to act on the results of such research as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in H2O), or at a pressure as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (2)."

INTRODUCTION Anticipated increase of nuclear fuel production in the future coincides with growing concern about the occupational health risk of miners from inhaled radon decay products. As a consequence it has been suggested to even lower presently permitted exposure levels (NIOSH, 1980) and implement more stringent control on measurement programmes. Compliance with these regulations requires large investments in new or modified ventilation systems as well as in increased expenditure for staff and instrumentation for health physics operational monitoring. Since both costs are directly related to the overall ore production costs, this can have far reaching implications with regards to the economic feasibility of certain mining operations and consequently reduce estimates of low-cost minable ore reserves. In addition there is increasing evidence that the radon problem is not limited to the nuclear fuel cycle only, but can also represent a significant hazard to non-uranium miners. A key component in the cost-effective implementation of legislative control measures is the monitoring system employed. The choice of system is decisive for the total costs of installation and maintenance, manpower requirements and accuracy of nuclide determination. In the following operational specifications are defined for monitors in mining and milling environments. Different types of available instrumentation are discussed with regard to their suitability for practical radiation protection in underground mines, open cut mines and mills. ATMOSPHERIC CHARACTERISTICS Underground mines Radon in the air of underground mining operations is exhaled from surrounding rock surfaces, crushed material and, to a lesser extent, from water seepage. Whilst in uranium mines radon releasing ore bodies are generally localized in distinct areas, radon sources in non-uranium mines can be very dispersed throughout the system of mine tunnels. The ventilation scheme used influences the absolute atmospheric level of radon as well as the equilibrium conditions between radon and its decay products (factor F). In uranium mines mechanical forced-air ventilation is normally the only way to achieve and maintain legally required nuclide levels. This causes the F-factor to be rather low, e.g. in French CFA-mines F is of the order of 0.2 (Francois, Pradel, Zettwoog, 1975). At the same time the fraction of unattached radon decay products (fp) can increase due to the high air velocities employed. However, it is possible to find non-uranium mines with either natural draught ventilation only or assisted on demand by forced air ventilation during special operations or climatic conditions. Thereby the F-factor is more dependent on seasonal changes of temperature differences between outdoors and mine atmosphere and work routines. As a result F can cover a wide range from 0.02 to 0.95 (Steinhäusler, 1976). The use of filters or electro-precipitators in mine ventilation systems can modify the atmospheric characteristics twofold as it generally decreases the content of radon decay products, but at the same time increases the content of the unattached fraction fp . Average concentration levels of radon decay products are mostly lower in mechanically ventilated non-uranium mines than in equally ventilated uranium mines and are below 0.3 Working Level (UNSCEAR, 1977). However, some working places in non-uranium mines, specially with only natural draught ventilation can occassionally approach maximum permissible levels as defined for uranium mines (Strong, Laidlaw, O&apos;Riordan, 1975; Snihs, 1976; Sciocchetti, Scacco, Clemente, 1981). Open pit- and surface mines Radionuclide levels of radon decay products in the atmosphere of these mines are mostly too low to represent a significant inhalation hazard for miners, ranging typically from 0.03 to 0.1 Working Level (Steinhäusler, 1976). However, personnel using airpurifying respirators or working in cabins ventilated with filtered air can be exposed to a radon atmosphere with low value for the F-factor (F [<] 0.1) and high fp-value up to 80 % (Leach and Lokan, 1979). Mills Atmospheric radon concentration in crushing, grinding, drying and packing sections depends on the radium 226 content of the ore, ore storage methods and ventilation system employed. Providing adequate ventilation ([>] 2 air changes per hour) and control of dust production radon and its decay products represent only a minor problem (Saconney, 1979). MONITORING OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE Objectives Operational monitoring of the working places provides information on: - confirmation of appropriate control of the routine mining methods employed - indication of abnormal conditions. INTRODUCTION Radcont is a program designed by the author of this paper for the industry to use as an instrument for radiation contamination evaluation and ventilation planning system. Radiation in mines are associated with the mining of gold and gold bearing minerals, as uranium and thorium is incorporated in the mining of these minerals. Radiation contamination in South African mines is not a new concept as it was investigated by the Chamber of Mines in the early 1960&apos;s and found not to be hazardous at the time. Since some of our mines export scrap metal to customers abroad, it came to light (1991) that some of the scrap metal was radioactive. The authority that oversees the nuclear aspects in South Africa is the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS). They investigated these matters and found that the mines needed further information regarding radioactive material and the handling of these contaminated materials. As the various mines were licensed (with various conditions incorporated) thereafter, the mines had to do their own investigations as to what extent their properties (Surface and underground) were radioactively contaminated. Some mines were found to be highly contaminated over the years of operation and controlling conditions were installed and measures installed to reduce the contamination levels. One of the conditions when issuing a licence by the Council for Nuclear Safety (CNS), is that a screening survey be carried out to determine the radiation exposure levels and corrective action to be taken if necessary. These surveys must be done by a person trained in the required procedures for such a survey. The person must also measure the risk correctly and assess the results properly. In such a survey, the internal and external exposure levels must be determined to assess the total exposure of persons working in those conditions and take appropriate action if necessary. When doing such a survey, hundreds and more likely, thou- sands of data points are recorded. In order to assess the data recorded, various integrated and difficult calculations need to be made, and takes up enormous amounts of time. (This excludes the interpretation of the results ) The following explanation of the program shows the different parts of such a survey assessment calculations to be done. The paper details the program layout and the different sub- sections within the primary program. It must be stated that the program, as with any other program, is as accurate as the data inserted into the data base. The program and details thereof are given under the following headings: 1. TOTAL EFFECTIVE DOSAGE WITH REGARDS TO: • GME required gravimetric results obtained (mg/m3) • Thick layer or total contamination measured (Bq/m2) • Dry condition surveys with dust loads taken as a Standard l0mg/m3 • Wet conditions survey with dust loads taken as l mg/m3 • Airborne long lived alpha and beta activities as determined by analysis in Bg/m3 • LTD (Thermoluminescent Dosimeter). Results as obtained from the SABS (South African Buro of Standards) are recorded in this section for each month of the year for each individual worker. An average dose is then determined at the end of the year. • Bucket measurements as recorded. • Smear samples (Loose contamination). As determined by Electra or by analysis • Occupational factors for Metallurgical and Engineering occupations in and around the Metallurgical facilities of your mine. • All underground dosage determination and calculations. (Radon and Thoron) 2. INFORMATION REQUIRED WHEN PROGRAM IS INITIALISED: As the program is started, it opens up on the contents page. Here there are various options to choose from, but one is cautioned as a beginner in operating the program, not to perform any tasks before carefully reading these instructions. Firstly, one must go to the &apos;Information required" pushbutton. Press this button. The information required page is shown where the cursor can be moved to the block where one can enter the specific mines name. To enter a mines name, put the cursor in the block provided and just insert the mines name with the normal keyboard keys and press the enter button on the computer keyboard. To enter the other information required such as Alpha and Beta instrument efficiency, ALI (Annual limit of intake) and probe area, one can either press the &apos;Data required" button for a dialog box information or enter it manually by just putting the cursor in the block provided and entering as did above. In order to insert all the required information for the pro- gram to calculate the information required, one must proceed further by entering the area names surveyed in the spaces provided. There are 20 spaces to enter 20 different areas surveyed. One must further also provide the amount of days worked in each area (i.8. 250) in the block provided. The de- fault is 250 days. Although production generally satisfies demand for rare earths, new markets may make undeveloped resources, particularly those rich in yttrium, more interesting. A Precambrian carbonalite orebody at Mountain Pass, California, has been the world&apos;s largest rare earth producer. Minor rare earth production comes from titanium placer mining in Florida and uranium mining in Canada. Prior to operations at Mountain Pass, North American production was mostly from placer deposits that constitute large, low-grade rare earth resources. Newly discovered North American rare metal resources in peralkaline igneous rocks are potential yttrium producers. Most of these resources are in a continent-wide belt of anorogenic magmatic rocks approximately coeval with mineralization at Mountain Pass. Other untapped rare each resources in North America are generally light rare earth-dominated and small or of low grade.

A discussion of fillers would not be complete without allotting adequate time to that unique and different mineral material, diatomaceous silica. Historical references to its use challenge the aesthetic aspect of man&apos;s curiosity; whereas modern scientific tools have provided a dimension of measurement that has motivated many of its more recent applications. A brief review of what is already known is in order. The diatom is a unicellular, plant-like, microscopic organism, related to the algae1. Its natural function appears to be that of a food for other marine or lacustrine organisms, The diatom&apos;s "claim to fame" from an industrial viewpoint is dependent on the fact that it secretes an opaline siliceous skeleton that must survive, chemically and structurally, the geologic processes that caused its formation in the first place; its subsequent demise, burial, consolidation, and alteration; and finally, its ultimate exploitation by man--in somewhat that order. In addition to its siliceous nature, the skeletal structure of the diatom possesses a variety of shapes, patterns, and sizes that have not only been the intrigue of microscopists for decades, but have served to set diatomite apart as an industrial mineral; and have reserved for it applications that cannot be satisfied by any other material. Its chemical inertness, its intricate structure, and its intrinsic hardness-coupled with fineness and friability-- are generally known and have accounted for its application in a wide range of filtration and filler uses. The increasing use of the electron microscope has considerably expanded our knowledge of heretofore unseen secondary and tertiary structure of submicron dimension in the diatom valve. The development of electro-sensing methods of particle size measurement which seem to supersede sedimentation and microscopic techniques has portrayed size distribution in a more realistic light. Interest in the surface chemistry of these silica structures has further strengthened our understanding for certain uses. Thus, new tools and ideas have made possible the introduction of diatomite into such sophisticated technologies as that of chromatographic supports, its improved utility in paint applications for the control of gloss and sheen, and its usefulness in the entirely new concept of "Dry Acid Concentrates." Each of these applications has been discussed elsewhere before people particularly interested in analytical chemistry, in paint, and in liquid handling, respectively, where the diatom has been a means to an end. The emphasis here, before the mining fraternity, however is on diatomite as a raw material with reference to the uses mentioned above. It is therefore toward an awareness and understanding of diatomite properties pertinent to these newer filler applications that this paper is directed.

Fullers earth has been mined since about 1920 in southwest Georgia and the adjoining area of Florida. In 1935, the mineral was named "attapulgite" after the source of a sample near the town of Attapulgus, Decatur County, Georgia. Mining and processing of the clay was described in a 1930 publication1 at a time when petroleum refiners were the major users. In the years since then, the uses and users of attapulgite have multiplied, and both mining methods and processing methods have been changed to optimize the clay for the new uses. A comprehensive review of the properties and applications of attapulgite 2 has been published. Only a brief review will be given here to explain the properties being sought and to show how these properties are optimized by mining and processing practices.

"The Jurassic coal fields which lay in west China are the major energy base and contain half of coal resources in China. Due to the gather and degeneration rules, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal is distinguished with permo-carboniferous coal, which needs to be studied deeply. Programmed heating experiments of five Jurassic coal samples and three permo-carboniferous coal samples from different primal coal fields in West China were conducted to identify the characteristic parameters in the low temperature stage of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. The experiments were carried out under non-isothermal heating conditions up to 180? at the heating rate of 0.33?/min in an air atmosphere. The result showed that oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity of all coal samples increased with the rising of the temperature, which of the Jurassic coal was higher than that of Permian-carboniferous coal. The C2H4 gas of Jurassic coal generated earlier, more than that of Permian-carboniferous coal in the process of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. It indicated that the Jurassic coal was easier to be oxidized and spontaneous combustion and the index parameters of spontaneous combustion were different between the Jurassic coal and permo-carboniferous coal.INTRODUCTION Coal was the foundation of industry development, and occupied 70% of primary energy production and consumption structure in China. According to the data of the 3rd coalfield prediction, 39.6% of the total coal resources were located in northwest Jurassic coal field in China [1], where the quality of coal was excellent. The study of northwest Jurassic coal already dated from the 80s of the 20th century, about coal rock composition, coal metamorphism [2], coal-derived hydrocarbons, coal structure [3], etc. The results of these studies showed that the composition and properties of Jurassic coal was obviously different from Permian-carboniferous coal, as well as the characteristic of spontaneous combustion [4]. As a result, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal particularly needed to be studied. Now more and more methods could be conducted to test the characteristics of coal spontaneous combustion, for example, thermal analysis technology [5-7], programmed heating experiment [8-10] and coal spontaneous combustion experiment [11,12]. In these methods, programmed heating experiment could be conducted to determine the oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity quickly."

Long distance slurry pipeline systems for steam coal, iron concentrates, copper concentrates, and limestone, first used nearly 60 years ago, are now transporting nearly three billion ton-miles annually. At this time a phosphate concentrate pipeline is nearing start-up and systems for transporting coking coal, lead/zinc concentrates, and fly ash are planned. The solids pipeline concept was first patented in the early 1900&apos;s and put into practice in the 1950&apos;s. Table 1 summarizes the major elements of several presently operating commercial systems. Increased control system sophistication has been accompanied by significant drops in control equipment size and cost, as illustrated by recent cases of pipeline operation with progressively more advanced level of control: 1) The Consolidation Coal (Ohio) and Savage River (Tasmania) iron concentrate pipelines started in 1957 and 1967, respectively, used simple hard-wired control logic. 2) The Black Mesa (Arizona) coal slurry pipeline commissioned in 1971 added a hard- wired programmable logic controller for some of the start-up and shutdown routines. 3) Two years after its start-up in 1974 the Pinto Valley (Arizona) copper concentrate pipeline was tied into the concentrator digital computer system for data logging. 4) The Samarco (Minas Gerais, Brazil) iron concentrate pipeline which came on-line in mid-1977 was the first slurry system to use a dedicated supervisory computer for its control. Communication to remote areas was via micro- wave and buried cable.
